Clinical blood values are reported for 14 blood components in the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) and compared with human clinical ranges. Certain values such as cholesterol, globulins and blood urea nitrogen deviate markedly from published human values. The distribution of serum proteins in fur seals, man and northern elephant seals also are given and compared.  相似文献

The levels of 13 components in the serum and eye fluids of the northern fur seal, Callorhinus ursinus, are compared. The wide variations observed would appear to limit the usefulness of eye fluid values as a substitute for serum values.  相似文献

Thirteen standard hematology values were determined for a healthy and growing population of free-ranging, lactating northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) from Lovushki Island in the Kuril Islands of far-east Russia. Results are presented from 24 females sampled between June and August during the 3-yr period of 2006-08. Hematologic values have been made available for future comparisons with the declining population of northern fur seals on the Pribilof Islands, Alaska, and are compared with published values for other otariid species.  相似文献

Studies on several aspects of the life cycle of hookworms (Uncinaria spp.) in the California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) and northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) were conducted on material collected on San Miguel Island (SMI), California and at The Marine Mammal Center, Sausalito, California in 1997, 1998, and 1999. Examination of Z. californianus intestines for adult hookworms and feces for eggs revealed that longevity of these parasites in pups is about 6-8 mo, and infections are probably not present in older sea lions. Parasitic third-stage larvae (L3) were recovered from the ventral abdominal tissue of Z. californianus, suggesting transmammary transmission. Callorhinus ursinus pups had no hookworm eggs in their feces or adult worms (except for 1 probable contaminant) in their intestines in the fall and early winter, revealing that adult Uncinaria spp. are spontaneously lost at <3 mo of age of the pups. Sand samples from rookeries, used by both Z. californianus and C. ursinus, on SMI were negative for free-living, L3 in summer months but positive in fall and winter months, indicating seasonality occurred.  相似文献

In northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus) up to at least 4 years of age there is virtually 100% prevalence of infestation with the nasal mite Orthohalarachne attenuata. Although clinical observations and gross examination indicate that the condition is not serious, some erosion and inflammation of the nasal turbinates and nasopharynx were seen associated with mites in histological sections.  相似文献

Tooth weight and body length of juvenile male northern fur seals, Callorhinus ursinus , collected on St. Paul Island, Alaska, from 1948 to 1984 were compared. The relationship between these variables was investigated for individual and combined age classes. A density-dependent increase in mean tooth weight occurred during a decline in fur seal abundance. Consistent, though poorly understood, differences in tooth weight were found among males associated with different rookeries (breeding grounds). Storing the teeth for long periods may affect the weights, but such effects, if any, are too small to account for the changes observed.  相似文献

Salmonellae in feral pinnipeds off the Southern California coast   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Rectal swabs were collected from 90 Northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) and 50 California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) pups on San Miguel Island for Salmonella screening. Three serotypes (newport, heidelberg, and oranienburg) were recovered from 33% of the fur seals and 40% of the sea lions.  相似文献

The interaction of complex sounds with the body tissues of Black Sea dolphin (Tursiops truncatus) was studied by the method of instrumental conditioned reflexes with food reinforcement. The thresholds of detecting underwater acoustic signals of different frequencies for dolphin and northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) were measured as a function of pulse duration under conditions of full and partial (head above water) submergence of animals into water. It was found that sound conduction through dolphin tissues was more effective than that in a northern fur seal in a wide frequency range. Presumably, the process of sound propagation in dolphin is accompanied by changes in the amplitude-frequency structure of broad-band sounds. The temporal summation in dolphin hearing was observed at all frequencies under conditions of full and partial submergence, whereas in northern fur seal it was nearly absent at a frequency of 5 kHz under the conditions of head lifting above water.  相似文献

Two methods for estimating the mean date of birth from daily counts of northern fur seal pups ( Callorhinus ursinus ) are presented and applied to data collected on the Pribilof Islands in 1951, 1962, 1963 and 1983. The mean date of birth over the four years was July 9. Reproduction is highly synchronized and consistent from one year to the next. Pupping occurs over a five week period with over 50% of the pups being born during the first two weeks of July.  相似文献

Behavioral thermoregulation represents an important strategy for reducing energetic costs in thermally challenging environments, particularly among terrestrial vertebrates. Because of the cryptic lifestyle of aquatic species, the energetic benefits of such behaviors in marine endotherms have been much more difficult to demonstrate. In this study, I examined the importance of behavioral thermoregulation in the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) pup, a small-bodied endotherm that spends prolonged periods at sea. The thermal neutral zones of three weaned male northern fur seal pups (body mass range = 11.8-12.8 kg) were determined by measuring resting metabolic rate using open-flow respirometry at water temperatures ranging from 2.5° to 25.0°C. Metabolic rate averaged 10.03 ± 2.26 mL O?kg?1 min?1 for pups resting within their thermal neutral zone; lower critical temperature was 8.3° ± 2.5°C , approximately 8°C higher than the coldest sea surface temperatures encountered in northern Pacific waters. To determine whether behavioral strategies could mitigate this potential thermal limitation, I measured metabolic rate during grooming activities and the unique jughandling behavior of fur seals. Both sedentary grooming and active grooming resulted in significant increases in metabolic rate relative to rest (P = 0.001), and percent time spent grooming increased significantly at colder water temperatures (P < 0.001). Jughandling metabolic rate (12.71 ± 2.73 mL O?kg?1 min ?1) was significantly greater than resting rates at water temperatures within the thermal neutral zone (P < 0.05) but less than resting metabolism at colder water temperatures. These data indicate that behavioral strategies may help to mitigate thermal challenges faced by northern fur seal pups while resting at sea.  相似文献

Underwater differential frequency hearing thresholds in the Black Sea bottle-nosed dolphin (Tursiops truncatus p.) and the northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) were measured depending on signal frequency and sound conduction pathways. The measurements were performed by the method of instrumental conditioned reflexes with food reinforcement under conditions of full and partial (with heads out of water at sound conduction through body tissues) submergence of animals into water. It was shown that in a frequency range of 5-100 kHz, underwater differential frequency hearing thresholds of the bottle-nosed dolphin changed from 0.46-0.60% to 0.21-0.34% and depended little on sound conduction pathways. The minimum underwater differential frequency hearing thresholds of the northern fur seal corresponded to the frequencies of maximum hearing sensitivity, changed from 1.7% to 1-2.3% in a frequency range of 1-20 kHz, sharply increased at the edges of the frequency hearing perception range, and depended little (in a range of 5-40 kHz) on sound conduction pathways. Thus, underwater sounds propagating through the body tissues of dolphin and fur seal reach the inner ear.  相似文献

Understanding animal movement and resource selection provides important information about the ecology of the animal, but an animal's movement and behavior are not typically constant in time. We present a velocity-based approach for modeling animal movement in space and time that allows for temporal heterogeneity in an animal's response to the environment, allows for temporal irregularity in telemetry data, and accounts for the uncertainty in the location information. Population-level inference on movement patterns and resource selection can then be made through cluster analysis of the parameters related to movement and behavior. We illustrate this approach through a study of northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) movement in the Bering Sea, Alaska, USA. Results show sex differentiation, with female northern fur seals exhibiting stronger response to environmental variables.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to assess the maximum net productivity level for the northern fur seal ( Callorhinus ursinus ) population of St. Paul Island, Alaska. Definitive determination of this level is not possible due to uncertainty in life table parameters and density-dependent changes in those parameters. To account for such uncertainty, repetitive numerical simulations were used to generate frequency distributions of estimates for the maximum net productivity level and related population parameters. This approach systematically varied simulation input parameters, ran a separate simulation with each input parameter combination, and validated the simulations on the basis of comparison with historical observations. Results from validated simulations were compiled in frequency distributions to provide a measure of confidence for MNPL estimates. The distributions confirm that this population is probably well below its maximum net productivity level. Because they reflect the uncertainty in our understanding of northern fur seal population dynamics, these distributions are a more realistic basis for management than single point estimates.  相似文献

Weather conditions recorded from 1956 to 1986 on St. Paul Island, Alaska, were probed to establish their influence upon the northern fur seal's life cycle ( Callorhinus ursinus ). Air temperatures, wind speeds, and relative humidity levels were seasonally decomposed and compared with the timing of pupping and migration. Most pups are born in early July when air temperatures and relative humidity approach their highest annual levels and wind speeds are at their lowest. Weather conditions favor growth and survival of pups from July to September but are unfavorable in June. A rapid deterioration in weather through October and November corresponds with the fall migration of pups and lactating females. The data suggest the pivotal event in the fur seal's life cycle is the timing of birth and survival of nursing pups. As such, the ultimate determinant of the precisely timed fur seal life cycle appears to be climatic seasonality during the breeding season.  相似文献

We describe a method to determine the species of pinniped from faeces collected from sympatric Steller sea lion (Eumetopias jubatus) and northern fur seal (Callorhinus ursinus) rookeries using newly developed species-specific primers that amplify a 667-669-base pair segment from the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) cytochrome B (cytB) gene region. The primers yielded the correct species in 100% of tissue samples from 10 known animals and 100% of faecal samples from 13 known animals. Species could be identified unequivocally for 87.7% of faecal samples from 122 unknown individuals. The ability to differentiate between scats of sympatrically breeding Steller sea lions and northern fur seals will contribute to the range-wide knowledge of the foraging strategies of both species as well as allow researchers to examine the niche partitioning and potential resource competition between the two predators.  相似文献

Growth curves are described for males, pregnant females, and non-pregnant females using morphometric measurements collected from over 18000 northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ) shot at sea between California and the Bering Sea from 1958 to 1974. Seals of all ages experience seasonal increases and decreases in body mass and length. Seasonal fluctuations of body length may be an artefact of mass displacement caused by seasonal changes in mass. Rapid growth and gain in mass occur during a brief one to three month period as the population migrates northward through the coastal waters of northern British Columbia and Alaska on their way to the Pribilof Islands. Body mass of females and immature males is gradually lost while fasting on land and wintering along the coasts of Washington, Oregon, and California. Pregnant females are both heavier and longer than non-pregnant females of the same age. Body mass in pregnant females levels off with age in contrast with the increasing mass of non-pregnant females. Growth of northern fur seals does not appear to stop at an upper asymptote, but continues throughout their life spans.  相似文献

The diet of adult female northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ) is examined through the analysis of faecal material collected during the summer breeding season at three breeding locations in the Bering Sea: St. Paul Island (1988, 1990) and St. George Island (1988, 1990) of the Pribilof Islands Group (USA), and Medny Island (1990) of the Commander Islands Group (Russia). Prey consumption varies annually and accordingly with the physical and biological environment surrounding each island. Juvenile walleye pollock ( Theragra chalcogramma ) is the most common prey of northern fur seals from St. Paul Island; the island is surrounded by a broad neritic environment with widely separated frontal zones and is the greatest distance from the continental shelf-edge. Gonatid squid ( Gonatopsis borealis/Berryteuthis magister and Gonatus madokail Gonatus middendorffi ) were the most common prey of northern fur seals from Medny Island; the island is surrounded by a compressed neritic environment and is adjacent to the continental shelf-edge and the oceanic marine environment. A combination of walleye pollock and gonatid squid is consumed by northern fur seals from St. George Island; the island has a surrounding oceanographic environment intermediate between the other two islands.
Variability in predation on walleye pollock is consistent with fishery information concerning the relative abundance and availability of walleye pollock around St. George and St. Paul Islands. The abundance and availability of these prey resources during the summer breeding season are key factors which influence the health and growth of the northern fur seal populations in the Bering Sea.  相似文献

Neutralizing antibodies to Tillamook calicivirus (TCV) were found in sera collected from California sea lions (Zalophus c. californianus Lesson) in 1983 and 1984 and in sera collected from Steller sea lions (Eumetopias jubatus Schreber) in 1976 and 1985. The combined prevalence of antibodies for these two species was 10/228 = 4.38%. Titers ranged from 1:20 (five animals), to 1:40 (four animals), to 1:80 (one animal) by standard microtiter neutralization assay. The seropositive pinnipeds were dispersed widely along the margins of the eastern Pacific rim, from the Bering Sea to the Santa Barbara Channel. Antibodies to TCV were not found in sera collected from northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus L.), Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens Illiger), seals of the family Phocidae, or several cetacean species. Tillamook calicivirus was isolated originally in 1981 from dairy calves in Oregon; the finding of neutralizing antibodies in two widely distributed species of sea lions suggests the possibility of a marine origin for this agent.  相似文献

Aerial and underwater audiograms for two young female northern fur seals ( Callorhinus ursinus ) and one young female California sea lion (Zalophus californianus) were obtained with the same procedure and apparatus. Callorhinus hears over a larger frequency range and is more sensitive to airborne sounds than Zalophus or any other pinniped thus far tested in the frequency range of 500 Hz to 32 kHz. Sensitivity of Callorhinus to waterborne pure tones, ranging from 2 to 28 kHz, is equal or superior to all other pinnipeds tested in this same frequency range. Like Zalophus , the upper frequency limit for underwater hearing (as defined by Masterton et al. 1969) in Callorhinus is about one-half octave lower than the three phocid species thus far tested. Callorhinus' upper frequency limit in air is about 36 kHz and under water it is about 40 kHz. Comparison of air and water audiograms shows Callorhinus is no exception to previous behavioral findings demonstrating that the „pinniped ear” is more suitable for hearing in water than in air. Similar to Zalophus and Phoca vitulina, Callorhinus shows an anomalous hearing loss at 4 kHz in air. The basis for this insensitivity to airborne sounds at 4kHz and not at lower or higher frequencies is presumably caused by specialized middle ear mechanisms matching impedance for waterborne sounds. Critical ratio curves for Callorhinus are similarly shaped to ones obtained for humans but are shifted upwards in frequency. Compared to all other marine mammals thus far evaluated, the critical ratios for Callorhinus are the smallest yet reported.  相似文献

Sera from 155 Pacific walruses (Odobenus rosmarus divergens Illiger), sampled in the Chukchi Sea during the summer of 1983, were tested for serum neutralizing (SN) antibodies to six marine calicivirus serotypes. Serotypes tested included San Miguel sea lion virus (SMSV) types 1, 5, 8, and 10, previously isolated from northern fur seals (Callorhinus ursinus Linné) in the Bering Sea; walrus calicivirus (WCV), previously isolated from walrus feces collected off sea ice in the Chukchi Sea; and Tillamook calicivirus (TCV), a bovine isolate from Oregon of suspected marine origin. No antibodies were found to SMSV-1, SMSV-10, or TCV. Antibodies to SMSV-5 were found in two animals (titers 1:20 and 1:160); antibodies to SMSV-8 were found in four animals (all 1:20); and antibodies to WCV were found in one animal (titer 1:40). Antibodies to WCV have been found in the Pacific walrus previously; however, this represents the first report of antibodies to any of the SMSV serotypes in this marine mammal.  相似文献
