Two Latin square design experiments investigated the relationship between hydrogen sulphide concentration in the rumen headspace gas of dairy cows and the early stages of protein degradation in the rumen. In Expt 1, three protein sources differing in rumen N (nitrogen) degradability (maize gluten feed (MGF); sunflower meal (SFM); and soyabean meal (SBM)) were used, whereas in Expt 2 four different batches of the same feed (MGF) differing in colour (CIE L*, a*, b* (CIELAB) scale) were used. After allowing the concentration of hydrogen sulphide in rumen gas to decline close to zero, a fixed amount of protein sources was offered to cows and the concentrations of hydrogen sulphide were recorded in rumen headspace gas at 30-min intervals. In Expt 1, the concentration of hydrogen sulphide showed considerable variation between protein sources, with MGF having the highest concentration followed by SFM and SBM resulting in very low concentrations. The N wash losses (zero time measurements with nylon bags) ranked the feeds in the same way, from MGF (highest; 61%) to SBM (lowest; 26%). There were marked differences in the degradation of cystine and methionine between protein sources, although the degradation of cystine was always higher than for methionine. MGF (Expt 2) led to increased concentrations of hydrogen sulphide, with peak concentrations achieved between 1 and 2 h after feeding. The concentrations of hydrogen sulphide were higher for MGF1, intermediate for MGF2 and lower for MGF3 and MGF4, agreeing with colour scale. Differences in the early stages of dietary sulphur degradation corresponded with differences in hydrogen sulphide concentrations in rumen gas. The results suggest that hydrogen sulphide concentrations in the rumen headspace gas could be useful to evaluate nutritional parameters not measured by the in sacco technique, contributing to a better understanding of the response of dairy cows to different protein supplements.  相似文献

There is a lot of evidence that chicory could be a highly palatable and nutritious source of forage for ruminants, well adapted to climate change and dry conditions in summer, thanks to its resistance to drought and high water content. This study aimed to describe the effect of incorporating chicory to ryegrass or to a ryegrass–white clover mixture on feeding behaviour, digestive parameters, nitrogen (N) balance and methane (CH4) emissions in sheep. In total, three swards of ryegrass, white clover and chicory were established and managed in a manner ensuring the forage use at a constant vegetative stage throughout the experiment. In all, four dietary treatments (pure ryegrass; binary mixture: 50% ryegrass–50% chicory; ternary mixture: 50% ryegrass–25% white clover–25% chicory; and pure chicory) were evaluated in a 4×4 replicated Latin square design with eight young castrated Texel sheep. Each experimental period consisted of an 8-day diet adaptation phase, followed by a 6-day measuring phase during which intake dynamics, chewing activity, digestibility, rumen liquid passage rate, fermentation end-products, N balance and CH4 emissions were determined. Data were analysed using a mixed model and orthogonal contrasts were used to detect the potential associative effects between ryegrass and chicory. The daily voluntary dry matter intake was lower for pure ryegrass than for diets containing chicory (P<0.001) and increased quadratically from 1.39 to 1.74 kg/day with increasing proportion of chicory. Huge positive quadratic effects (P<0.001) between ryegrass and chicory were detected on eating time and eating rate just after feeding indicating an increase of the motivation to eat with mixtures, whereas rumination activity decreased linearly with the proportion of chicory (P<0.001). The organic matter digestibility was similar among treatments (around 80%), but a strong positive quadratic P<0.001) effect was observed on liquid passage rate suggesting that chicory allowed fast particle breakdown in the rumen. Animals fed with the ryegrass–white clover–chicory mixture had the higher urinary N losses (P<0.001), whereas retained N per day or per g N intake was greater when the proportion of chicory was at least 50% (P<0.001) being ~40% greater than for the other treatments. The CH4 yield was lower with pure chicory than with the other treatments (P<0.001) for which emissions were similar. In conclusion, mixing ryegrass and chicory in equal proportions produces a synergy on voluntary intake and an improved N use efficiency likely due to complementarity in chemical composition, increased motivation to eat and faster ruminal particle breakdown.  相似文献

The study examined the effects of harvest time of red and white clover silage on eating and ruminating activity and particle size distribution in feed boli, rumen content and faeces in cows. The clover crops were harvested at two stages of growth and ensiled in bales. Red clover crops had 36% and 45% NDF in dry matter (DM) at early (ER) and late (LR) harvest, respectively, and the white clover crops had 19% and 29% NDF in DM at the early (EW) and late (LW) harvest, respectively. The silages were fed restrictively (80% of ad libitum intake) twice daily to four rumen cannulated non-lactating Jersey cows (588 ± 52 kg) in a 4 × 4 Latin square design. Jaw movements (JM) were recorded for 96 h continuously. Swallowed boli, rumen mat, rumen fluid and faeces samples were collected, washed in nylon bags (0.01 mm pore size) and freeze-dried before dry sieving through 4.750, 2.360, 1.000, 0.500, 0.212 and 0.106 mm into seven fractions. The length (PL) and width (PW) values of rumen and faeces particles within each fraction were measured by use of image analysis. The eating activity (min/kg DM intake; P < 0.05) was higher in LR compared with the other treatments. The eating activity (min/kg NDF intake; P < 0.05) was affected by clover type with highest values for white clover silage. The mean ruminating time (min/kg DM), daily ruminating cycles (P < 0.001) and JM during ruminating (P < 0.05) were affected by treatment with increasing values at later harvest time. The proportion of washed particle DM of total DM in boli (P < 0.001), rumen mat (P < 0.001), rumen fluid (P < 0.01) and faeces was (P < 0.001) highest by feeding LR. There were identified two peaks (modes 1 and 2) on the probability density distribution (PDF) of PW values of rumen mat and faeces, but only one peak (mode 1) for PL values. There was no difference in the mean and mode 1 PW and PL value in rumen mat between the four treatments. The mean PL, mode PL, mode 2 PW and mean PW in faeces were highest for LR (P < 0.05). The mean particle size in boli measured by sieving was higher at white clover compared with red clover treatments (P < 0.001) and the highest value in faeces was found in LR (P < 0.01). The two peaks on PDF for width values of rumen mat and faeces particles are most likely related to the leaves and the stems/petioles. In conclusion, the mean total chewing activity per kg DM was lowest for the white clover silage and increased for both silages due to later harvest time. The mean particle size in boli was smallest for LR, whereas the mean PL and PW in faeces were highest for the LR.  相似文献

Biohydrogenation of C18 fatty acids in the rumen of cows, from polyunsaturated and monounsaturated to saturated fatty acids, is lower on clover than on grass-based diets, which might result in increased levels of polyunsaturated fatty acids in the milk from clover-based diets affecting its nutritional properties. The effect of forage type on ruminal hydrogenation was investigated by in vitro incubation of feed samples in rumen fluid. Silages of red clover, white clover and perennial ryegrass harvested in spring growth and in third regrowth were used, resulting in six silages. Fatty acid content was analysed after 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and 24 h of incubation to study the rate of hydrogenation of unsaturated C18 fatty acids. A dynamic mechanistic model was constructed and used to estimate the rate constants (k, h) of the hydrogenation assuming mass action-driven fluxes between the following pools of C18 fatty acids: C18:3 (linolenic acid), C18:2 (linoleic acid), C18:1 (mainly vaccenic acid) and C18:0 (stearic acid) as the end point. For kC18:1,C18:2 the estimated rate constants were 0.0685 (red clover), 0.0706 (white clover) and 0.0868 (ryegrass), and for kC18:1,C18:3 it was 0.0805 (red clover), 0.0765 (white clover) and 0.1022 (ryegrass). Type of forage had a significant effect on kC18:1,C18:2 (P < 0.05) and a tendency to effect kC18:1,C18:3 (P < 0.10), whereas growth had no effect on kC18:1,C18:2 or kC18:1,C18:3 (P > 0.10). Neither forage nor growth significantly affected kC18:0,C18:1, which was estimated to be 0.0504. Similar, but slightly higher, results were observed when calculating the rate of disappearance for linolenic and linoleic acid. This effect persists regardless of the harvest time and may be because of the presence of plant secondary metabolites that are able to inhibit lipolysis, which is required before hydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids can begin.  相似文献

Two experiments were conducted with 30 dairy cows each, to study the preference for fresh (Experiment 1) and ensiled (Experiment 2) ryegrass, white and red clover. Both experiments consisted of three choice diets with white or red clover or both, offered with ryegrass, and two diets with ryegrass mixed with white or red clover (40% clover). Cows consumed diets with 37.7% fresh white and 45.9% red clover, and no preference was observed when the cows were offered all three forages. By contrast, cows preferred white and red clover silage (73.0 and 69.2%, respectively) over ryegrass silage (of lower nutritive quality). When offered three forages, cows preferred white (59.8%) over red clover (17.5%) and ryegrass (22.7%). Choice diets resulted in diets similar (fresh forages) or higher in nutrient content and digestibility (silages). Treatments did not affect feed intake and performance. Choices compared to mixed diets with red clover silage were preferable regarding the fatty acid composition of the milk fat. Obviously, only large differences in nutrient and energy concentration facilitate preferences for clovers over ryegrass, which could, depending on clover type, be beneficial in terms of the milk's fatty acid composition.  相似文献

Perennial ryegrass and perennial ryegrass/white clover permanent dairy pastures are compared with respect to productivity, environmental impact and financial costs in nitrate vulnerable zones (NVZ) in the UK. With appropriate management, and utilisation of recommended perennial ryegrass and white clover cultivars, white clover is likely to stabilise at around 20% of total dry matter production in a mixed pasture. Plant dry matter production and milk production from a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture are likely to be similar to that from a perennial ryegrass pasture receiving 200 kg N ha−1 annum−1 and around 70% of that obtained with perennial ryegrass supplied with 350–400 kg N ha−1 annum−1. Nitrate, phosphorus and methane losses from the system and decreases in biodiversity relative to a grazed indigenous sward are likely to be similar for a perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture and a perennial ryegrass pasture receiving 200 kg N ha−1 annum−1: nitrate leachate from both systems is likely to comply with European legislation. Greenhouse gas emissions resulting from nitrogen (N) fertiliser production would be avoided with the perennial ryegrass/white clover pasture. Within NVZ stocking rate restrictions, white clover can provide the N required by a pasture at a lower financial cost than that incurred by the application of N fertiliser.  相似文献

About 68–86% of the cysteine synthase activity in leaf tissue of white clover (Trifolium repens) and peas (Pisum sativum cultivar Massey Gem) was associated with chloroplasts. The enzymes from white clover and peas were purified ca 66 and 12-fold respectively. For clover, the Km values determined by calorimetric and S2? ion electrode methods were: S2? 0.51 and 0.13 mM; O-acetylserine (OAS), 3.5 and 2.O mM respectively. The analogous values for the pea enzyme were: S2?, 0.24 and 0.06 mM; OAS, 3.1 and 0.24 mM. Both enzymes were inhibited by cystathionine and cysteine. Pretreatment with cysteine inactivated the enzyme, but addition of pyridoxal phosphate caused partial reactivation. Isolated pea chloroplasts (70–75 % intact) catalysed OAS-dependent assimilation of sulphide at a mean rate of 88 μmol/mg Chl/hr. About 85 % of the OAS-dependent sulphide assimilated was recovered as cysteine. The rates were unaffected by light and 2 μM DCMU. Sonicating the chloroplasts enhanced the rate by 1.3–2 fold. Cysteine synthase activity was associated with the chloroplast stroma. Similar results were obtained for clover chloroplasts except that both the intactness and the rates were lower.  相似文献

The combined effects of soil water deficit and above and below ground interspecific plant competition on the growth, water-use efficiency (WUE), and measured carbon isotopic composition (δ13C) values of white clover and ryegrass were studied. White clover and ryegrass were grown in specially designed crates 1) individually; 2) in shoot competition; or 3) in shoot + root competition and either well-watered or at a moderate or severe soil water deficit. The effects of shoot + root competition on shoot dry matter growth were substantial and benefited both white clover and ryegrass when well-watered or at a moderate soil water deficit, while severely reducing white clover shoot dry matter growth at severe soil water deficit. Plant competition did not affect the WUE of white clover or ryegrass. As soil water deficit increased, the WUE of white clover did not change whereas the WUE of ryegrass increased and was greater than that of white clover. This was attributed to the lower leaf water conductance of ryegrass which conserved water and maintained growth longer compared to white clover. A stronger correlation existed between soil water deficit and measured δ13C values for ryegrass at each plant competition level (P<0.001) than existed for white clover (individual: P<0.01; shoot + root: P<0.001; shoot: P<0.10). Unlike white clover, the relationship between measured δ13C values and shoot dry matter growth indicated that C assimilation for ryegrass was dependent on type of plant competition. That WUE remained constant for white clover while measured δ13C values increased as soil water deficit increased, suggests that the role below ground respiration rate played in determining δ13C values increased. The WUE of white clover appears to be independent of the nature of the competition between plants and the soil water deficit level at which it is grown, whereas for ryegrass, the addition of root competition to shoot competition should lead to increases in its WUE. To achieve a better understanding of the nutritional value of grazed forages to ruminants, it is necessary to improve our knowledge of the accessibility and nature of nutrients available to micro-organisms in the rumen. The objectives of this experiment were to compare release of cell contents and comminution of particles during ingestive mastication in dairy cows fed four temperate species or varieties of fresh forages, and to analyse the respective effects of chewing behaviour and mechanical properties of plant tissue on release of cell contents. Six Holstein dairy cows were fed indoors with four species/varieties of fresh forages being white clover (WC) (Trifolium repens L., cv Alice), tetraploid perennial ryegrass (tPR) (Lolium perenne L., cv Chéops), diploid perennial ryegrass (dPR) (Lolium perenne L., cv Ohio) and tall fescue (TF) (Festuca arundinacea Schreb., cv Barcel). The design was two 4 × 4 Latin squares with 4 periods of 1 day each and two replications of two treatments on two cows each period. One Latin square was completed in May and the other in June. Ingestive boli were collected directly at the cardia of the cows during the morning meal after manually emptying the rumen. The intake rate averaged 62.5 g DM/min, and chewing behaviour parameters were unaffected by herbage. The average proportions of intracellular constituents (ICs) released during ingestive mastication were 265, 203 and 364 g/kg of ICs ingested for neutral detergent soluble (NDS), intracellular N and water-soluble carbohydrates (WSC), respectively. For most ICs considered, the proportions released during mastication were higher for white clover and fescue compared with ryegrasses. The proportions of intracellular N released were higher for tetraploid compared with diploid ryegrass. The median size of the bolus particles was unaffected by the herbage species or variety. In contrast, the median size of the particles in the boli was strongly affected by individual cow (P<0.01), whereas the proportions of ICs released showed no such effect. It appeared that those cows with the lowest reduction in particle sizes by ingestive chewing were those with a smaller molar surface area. None of the parameters measured (i.e., release of ICs, median size of particles in the boli and chewing behaviour) could be related to the shear properties of the herbage. Results illustrate the complexity of the interaction between the structure of the plant tissue and the physical damage of the particles during chewing.  相似文献

Most often, farmers consider red clover an unattractive forage because of its low ensilability. Nevertheless, several in vivo and in vitro experiments also showed advantages of red clover silages such as decreased rumen biohydrogenation of polyunsaturated fatty acids. This has been attributed to a possible protective role of protein-bound phenols, with polyphenol oxidase playing a key role in their formation. This enzyme is active in red clover, but not in other green forages, such as, for example, perennial ryegrass. Therefore, the aim was to study the lipid metabolism within red clover/ryegrass mixtures in lab scale silages and during in vitro rumen batch incubations. Ensilability of red clover increased with higher proportions of ryegrass in the silage mixture. However, the lipid-protecting mechanism of red clover does not seem to occur in the co-ensiled ryegrass as lipolysis of polar lipids linearly increased with increasing proportions of ryegrass (86.0%, 91.6%, 89.9%, 93.1% and 95.6% in 60-day-old silages with 100/0, 75/25, 50/50, 25/75 and 0/100 red clover/ryegrass, respectively). Rumen lipolysis and biohydrogenation of C18:3n-3 and C18:2n-6 were negatively related to red clover proportions in the silage mixtures. The lipid-protective mechanism in red clover silages is confirmed, but it seems not to be transferred to lipids in co-ensiled forages.  相似文献

Plant cell suspension cultures from Catharanthus roseus were investigated for their capability to dissimilate methionine or its analogs in order to reutilize the sulphane group for cysteine biosynthesis. Three steps have been described as prerequisites of this process: (a) oxidative degradation by the amino-acid oxidase of methionine giving rise to methanethiol production; (b) demethylation by methyltransferases leading to homocysteine and S-methylmethionine (c) replacement of the homocysteine sulphane sulphur by alkylthiol yielding methionine and free hydrogen sulphide. A reversal of the cystathionine pathway as a source of cysteine was ruled out because the cells lack cystathionine γ-lyase. The absence of this enzyme is compensated by the S-alkyl exchange of homocysteine with methylmercaptan. Hydrogen sulphide thus liberated is used for de novo synthesis of cysteine. The complete pathway can be catalyzed by the constitutive set of enzymes present in the higher plant.  相似文献

The aim of this meta-analysis was to compare feed intake, milk production, milk composition and organic matter (OM) digestibility in dairy cows fed different grass and legume species. Data from the literature was collected and different data sets were made to compare families (grasses v. legumes, Data set 1), different legume species and grass family (Data set 2), and different grass and legume species (Data set 3+4). The first three data sets included diets where single species or family were fed as the sole forage, whereas the approach in the last data set differed by taking the proportion of single species in the forage part into account allowing diets consisting of both grasses and legumes to be included. The grass species included were perennial ryegrass, annual ryegrass, orchardgrass, timothy, meadow fescue, tall fescue and festulolium, and the legume species included were white clover, red clover, lucerne and birdsfoot trefoil. Overall, dry matter intake (DMI) and milk production were 1.3 and 1.6 kg/day higher, respectively, whereas milk protein and milk fat concentration were 0.5 and 1.4 g/kg lower, respectively, for legume-based diets compared with grass-based diets. When comparing individual legume species with grasses, only red clover resulted in a lower milk protein concentration than grasses. Cows fed white clover and birdsfoot trefoil yielded more milk than cows fed red clover and lucerne, probably caused by a higher OM digestibility of white clover and activity of condensed tannins in birdsfoot trefoil. None of the included grass species differed in DMI, milk production, milk composition or OM digestibility, indicating that different grass species have the same value for milk production, if OM digestibility is comparable. However, the comparison of different grass species relied on few observations, indicating that knowledge regarding feed intake and milk production potential of different grass species is scarce in the literature. In conclusion, different species within family similar in OM digestibility resulted in comparable DMI and milk production, but legumes increased both DMI and milk yield compared with grasses.  相似文献

Passage, comminution and digestion rates of large and small particles were estimated using a rumen evacuation technique and total faecal collection with five lactating dairy cows in a 5 × 5 Latin square experiment. Two grass and two red clover silages harvested at early and late primary growth stages and a 1:1 mixture of late harvest grass and early harvest red clover were the dietary treatments. Cows received 9.0 kg supplementary concentrate per day. Ruminal contents and faeces were divided into large (>1.25 mm) and small (1.25–0.038 mm) particles by wet sieving. Indigestible neutral detergent fibre (iNDF) was determined by 12 days ruminal in situ incubation followed by neutral detergent extraction. Plant species did not affect ruminal particle size distribution, whereas advancing forage maturity decreased the proportion of large particles for both grass and red clover silage diets. Ruminal pool size of iNDF was higher (P<0.001) with red clover compared to grass silage diets. Ruminal passage rates of iNDF and potentially digestible NDF (pdNDF) increased with decreasing particle size (P<0.01). Passage rate of iNDF for small particles was slower (P<0.01) when red clover compared to grass silage diets were fed. Particle comminution rate in the rumen was slower (P<0.001) with red clover compared to grass silage diets and it increased (P<0.01) with advancing forage maturity. The contribution of particle comminution to ruminal mean retention time of iNDF in the ruminal large particle pool was smaller (P<0.01) in red clover compared to grass silage diets and it increased (P<0.05) with the mixed silage compared to the separate silages. Passage rate of pdNDF for both large and small particles was not affected by dietary treatments. Digestion rate of pdNDF for large particles was faster (P<0.001) with red clover compared to grass silage diets. Differences in ruminal passage and digestion rates of the large and small particles, in addition to differences in the passage and digestion rates of red clover compared to grass silage diets, emphasize the need to consider particle size and forage type in metabolic models predicting feed intake and fibre digestibility in ruminants.  相似文献

Male Beulah speckled face lambs (initial live weight (LW) 28.8 ± 0.31 kg) were allocated to three dietary treatments to evaluate the performance of store lambs of a hill breed when offered ensiled lucerne (Medicago sativa), red clover (Trifolium pratense) or ryegrass. Second-cut silage bales (wilted and inoculated) were prepared from 3-year old lucerne and red clover stands and a 1-year old ryegrass sward. All the lambs were group-housed and offered ad libitum ryegrass silage during a 3-week co-variate period. This was followed by a week of dietary changeover period, after which the lambs were housed individually and offered their treatment diet ad libitum. All the lambs received a flat rate supplement of pelleted molassed sugarbeet (250 g fresh weight/day). Individual intakes were determined daily, and weekly measurements of LW and body condition score (CS) were made. Additional measurements were taken by scanning the lambs for depth of Longissimus dorsi (LD) muscle and subcutaneous fat. Over an experimental period of 7 weeks, the lambs offered red clover silage had a higher voluntary silage dry matter (DM) intake, total DM intake and metabolisable energy (ME) intake (P < 0.001) than lambs offered either lucerne or ryegrass silage. This resulted in a faster (P < 0.001) growth rate and increase (P < 0.001) in CS, with no difference between lucerne and ryegrass silages. The feed conversion efficiency (FCE) was 8.0 ± 0.61 kg feed/kg gain for lambs fed red clover silage, compared with 16.6 ± 2.82 and 10.6 ± 1.94 kg feed/kg gain for lucerne and ryegrass silage, respectively. The CP intake was higher (P < 0.001) for lambs fed the lucerne and red clover silages than for the ryegrass silage treatment. The concentration of plasma total protein (TP) was higher (P < 0.05) for lambs offered ryegrass silage versus lucerne and red clover silage. Urea concentrations were highest for lambs fed lucerne silage and lowest for those fed ryegrass silage (P < 0.05). The glucose concentration was higher (P < 0.05) for lambs offered red clover silage, whereas non-esterified fatty acids (NEFA) concentration was higher (P < 0.05) for lambs offered lucerne silage. Substituting ryegrass silage with red clover silage has the potential to improve the performance of finishing store lambs.  相似文献

Summary White clover appears to be much more sensitive, in terms of dry-matter production, to variations of soil moisture than Italian ryegrass. The results show that a variation of 5 in the percentage of water (moist-soil basis) on either side of the field-capacity figure can cause a statistically significant effect in the dry weight of Italian ryegrass in pot culture, although a slightly larger percentage may be necessary for white clover to be affected as standard errors in pot culture with this crop tend to be higher.With an adequate supply of soil phosphorus the greater the amount of readily available water the greater the percentage of P2O5 in Italian ryegrass; with white clover it rises to a maximum then falls off under very wet Statistically significant differences in percentage P2O5 for both crops can be obtained whit those variations in the water supply which caused significant differences in dry weight.  相似文献

The aim of this work was to assess the potential for bacterial oxidation of hydrogen sulphide as a purification method of sour gas. Using a continuous culture of Chlorobium limicola, high efficiencies of oxidation of both soluble and gaseous sulphide were achieved, with efficiencies for the latter exceeding 95%. Sulphide added as aqueous sodium sulphide was converted to sulphur and sulphate with almost total removal of the initial 100 mg S l−1 within 24 h. Gaseous sulphide was oxidized at an efficiency of 95% (approximately 3 mmol S h−1 (unit biomass Abs)−1) over 1 h runs at a gas flow rate of 60 ml min−1. With a sulphur recovery system to prevent sulphur accumulation, an efficiency of 70% was maintained. Biological removal of sulphide represents a potentially important biotechnological process, with high potential for viable scale up.  相似文献

This study examined the comminution of fresh herbage, subsequent nutrient release, and the characteristics of swallowed boli from three physically and chemically contrasting forages during ingestive mastication by dairy cows. The extent and pattern of nutrient release will determine their availability to rumen microflora, and potentially influence their efficiency of use. The forages evaluated were perennial ryegrass (ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., cv Alto AR37), lucerne (Medicago sativa L., cv Torlesse) and chicory (Cichorium intybus L., cv Choice). Experimental design was a 3×3 cross-over with three forages and three consecutive 1-day measurement periods, conducted twice. Six non-lactating, pregnant, multiparous Holstein-Friesian×Jersey cows (Bos taurus) were used, with the first cross-over applied to three mature (10.1±0.61 years old; BW 631±64 kg) cows, and the second to three young (4.8±0.02 years; BW 505±19 kg) cows. Fresh cut forage was offered to the cows following partial rumen evacuation. Swallowed boli were collected directly at the cardia at the commencement, middle and end of the first feeding bout of the first meal of the day. Forage species did not affect the fresh weight of ingested boli (mean 169 g, P=0.605) but the proportion of saliva in boli varied between forage. Boli of chicory contained the greatest amount of herbage material and least amount of saliva, whereas ryegrass boli were the opposite. Boli fresh weight tended to increase as time in the meal progressed, but the age of the cow was not shown to affect any boli characteristics or nutrient release. Particle size reduction was affected by forage, with 31%, 38% and 35% of chicory, lucerne and ryegrass herbage reduced to <2 mm. There was little evidence of relationship between comminution and any physical or chemical characteristic of the forage, except in ryegrass where extent of comminution was moderately correlated with herbage strength. Proportional release of herbage soluble carbohydrate exceeded that of N during mastication. Differences in loss of N were moderately correlated with the amount of N in the herbage (R2=0.53) but herbage comminution was not strongly correlated with release of either N or carbohydrate. These findings illustrate the complex animal×forage interactions that occur during mastication, and that it is not possible to infer nutrient loss from herbage based on herbage characteristics as the driver for this differ between species.  相似文献

The relationship between numbers of Deroceras reticulatum and the establishment of ryegrass cv. Melle and white clover cv. Milkanova was studied on a mini-plot experiment. Assessments 12 and 33 days after sowing showed that Deroceras reticulatum had a proportionally greater impact on survival and growth of clover than on ryegrass. Slugs had no apparent effect on numbers or growth of three species of broad-leaved weeds (Senecio vulgaris, Cardamine hirsuta and Epilobium sp.) which occurred in the field experiment. In pot experiments where seedlings of ryegrass together with one of three clover cultivars, with or without chickweed (Stellaria media), were exposed to Deroceras reticulatum, seedlings of white clover cv. Aran were less affected by slug grazing than cvs S184 or Milkanova. The presence of different clover cultivars did not significantly influence the impact of slugs on growth of ryegrass or chickweed, nor did the presence or absence of chickweed influence the effect of slugs on ryegrass and clover seedlings. Slugs had less impact on the growth of chickweed than on ryegrass or clover. Thus slug grazing would make clover less able to compete with chickweed as well as the other weeds found in the mini-plot experiment.  相似文献

Faeces containing Trichostrongylus colubriformis and/or Ostertagia circumcincta eggs were used to provide four contaminations in each of 2 years on plots of browntop, Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, tall fescue, lucerne, chicory, cocksfoot, white clover, and prairie grass and in the second year a mixed sward of ryegrass/white clover. Third stage larvae were recovered from faeces and from four strata of herbage, 0–2.5, 2.5–5, 5–7.5 and >7.5 cm above the soil surface at 2, 4, 6, 8, 11, and 14 weeks after faeces were deposited on the swards. Herbage species had a significant (P &lt; 0.0001) effect on the number of larvae recovered. Greatest numbers of larvae, as indicated by ranking analysis, were recovered from Yorkshire fog, ryegrass, and cocksfoot and lowest numbers from white clover and lucerne. The difference between herbages in numbers of larvae recovered was due to the ‘‘development success’’, the ability of larvae to develop to the infective stage and migrate on to herbage, rather than ‘‘survival’’, the rate of population decline once on the herbage. Faecal degradation was most rapid from white clover and browntop, intermediate from tall fescue, lucerne, prairie grass, cocksfoot, and ryegrass, and slowest from Yorkshire fog swards. The numbers of larvae recovered from herbages were related (r2 = 0.59, P &lt; 0.05) with the faecal mass remaining. A greater proportion of the total larvae recovered from the herbage was recovered from the bottom stratum of Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than from white clover, with the other herbages intermediate, indicating that larvae had greater difficulty migrating up Yorkshire fog and prairie grass than the other herbage species. In most herbage species, despite more larvae being recovered from the lowest stratum, larval density (L3/kg herbage DM) was highest in the top stratum. This study has demonstrated that herbage species can have a significant impact on the population dynamics and vertical migration of T. colubriformis and O. circumcincta larvae.  相似文献

A two-year (2015 and 2016) grazing study was established to compare ewe and lamb performance when grazed on a perennial ryegrass only sward compared to more diverse sward types. In that study four sward types were investigated: a perennial ryegrass (Lolium perenne) only sward receiving 163 kg nitrogen per hectare per year (N/ha/yr) (PRG); a perennial ryegrass and white clover (Trifolium repens) sward receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (PRGWC); a six species sward (two grasses (perennial ryegrass and timothy (Phleum pratense)), two legumes (white and red clover (Trifolium pratense)) and two herbs (ribwort plantain (Plantago lanceolata) and chicory (Cichorium intybus)) receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (6S); and a nine species sward containing cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata), greater birdsfoot trefoil (Lotus pedunculatus) and yarrow (Achillea millefolium) in addition to the six species listed above, receiving 90 kg N/ha/yr (9S). Each sward type was managed as a separate farmlet and stocked with 30 twin-rearing ewes at a stocking rate of 12.5 ewes/ha under rotational grazing management from turnout post-lambing until housing. Lamb live weight was recorded fortnightly and lambs were drafted for slaughter at 45 kg. Ewe live weight and body condition score (BCS) were recorded on five occasions annually. Lamb faecal egg count (FEC) was recorded fortnightly and lambs were treated with anthelmintics when mean lamb FEC per sward type was above 400 eggs per gram. Ewes grazing the 6S and 9S swards had heavier (P < 0.01) live weights and BCS throughout the study than the ewes grazing the PRG sward. Lambs grazing the 6S sward were heavier than lambs grazing all other sward types of 14 weeks old (P < 0.05). Lambs grazing the PRG sward required more days to reach slaughter weight than lambs grazing all other sward types (P < 0.001). Lambs grazing the 6S and 9S swards required fewer anthelmintic treatments than lambs grazing the PRG or PRGWC swards. In conclusion, grazing multispecies swards improved ewe and lamb performance and reduced the requirement for chemical anthelmintics.  相似文献
