Many populations of native Acacia raddiana trees in ephemeral riverbeds in the Negev desert are suffering from high mortality. Road-building techniques that cut off water to trees in downstream populations and the pumping of aquifers for agriculture have been mooted as causes of this mortality. We studied the water relations of nine isolated populations of these trees using a pressure chamber and stable carbon isotopes in order to determine whether current water stress could be the cause of this mortality. High mortality populations had more negative water potentials, lower relative water contents, and lower cell water volumes at full turgor than low mortality populations. Thus, mortality is correlated with current inter-population differences in water stress. However, there was no difference in water potentials between trees upstream and downstream of roads. Furthermore, greater water stress in trees after a dry winter than in the previous summer indicates that these trees are largely drawing on surface floods for water. Thus, road-building practices and aquifer pumping are unlikely causes of current water stress. Hence, water stress is linked to mortality in these trees, although our results indicate that irregular water stress (perhaps in drought years only) is probably the cause of this mortality.  相似文献

Tropical tree species vary widely in their pattern of spatial dispersion. We focus on how seed predation may modify seed deposition patterns and affect the abundance and dispersion of adult trees in a tropical forest in India. Using plots across a range of seed densities, we examined whether seed predation levels by terrestrial rodents varied across six large-seeded, bird-dispersed tree species. Since inter-specific variation in density-dependent seed mortality may have downstream effects on recruitment and adult tree stages, we determined recruitment patterns close to and away from parent trees, along with adult tree abundance and dispersion patterns. Four species (Canarium resiniferum, Dysoxylum binectariferum, Horsfieldia kingii, and Prunus ceylanica) showed high predation levels (78.5-98.7%) and increased mortality with increasing seed density, while two species, Chisocheton cumingianus and Polyalthia simiarum, showed significantly lower seed predation levels and weak density-dependent mortality. The latter two species also had the highest recruitment near parent trees, with most abundant and aggregated adults. The four species that had high seed mortality had low recruitment under parent trees, were rare, and had more spaced adult tree dispersion. Biotic dispersal may be vital for species that suffer density-dependent mortality factors under parent trees. In tropical forests where large vertebrate seed dispersers but not seed predators are hunted, differences in seed vulnerability to rodent seed predation and density-dependent mortality can affect forest structure and composition.  相似文献

African Acacias are often major contributors to the progressive increase in the woody component of savannas, a phenomenon commonly referred to as bush encroachment. They produce large quantities of seed and may have large soil‐stored seed banks. In Hluhluwe–Umfolozi Park, the number of adult Acacia nilotica trees per hectare far exceed that of A. karroo adults. The relative dominance is reversed in the juvenile stage with A. karroo outnumbering A. nilotica threefold outside closed woodlands. Acacia karroo trees were smaller than A. nilotica trees on average, but produced more seeds for a given basal diameter size class. Acacia karroo showed less bruchid infestation than A. nilotica at all stages of pod development. Unlike A. nilotica, a proportion of A. karroo seeds was able to germinate after bruchid attack. We detected no difference between the two species in the soil‐stored seed bank or in the viability of seeds found in the seed bank.  相似文献

Abstract Experimental studies of the emergence of shrubs and trees in grassy woodlands on the New England Tablelands, New South Wales, Australia, showed that emergence of seedlings was determined by seed supply, seed predators and seed burial. The survival of these seedlings was then observed in an experiment to test the effects of previous land use, grazing by stock and grazing by other vertebrates. The fate of four eucalypts and six shrub species was followed over 5 years. Across all species more than 50% mortality occurred in the first 6 months prior to the imposition of grazing treatments. These deaths were attributed to the combined effects of insect defoliation, cold, and low soil moisture. Average mortality over all treatments showed two distinct trends: eucalypts and one unpalatable shrub (Leptospermum) had greater than 1% survival over 5 years, whereas Acacia, Cassinia, Indigophera, Lomatia and Xanthorrhoea either had very low or no survival after 5 years. The effect of livestock grazing on seedling numbers was rarely detected because of patchy emergence and mortality due to other causes. However, proportional hazard regression models showed that there was often an increased hazard associated with grazing or grazed landscapes. Overall, those species with high hazard coefficients associated with stock are rare in the landscape, whereas those with lesser risk are more common. Recruitment is likely to be an extremely rare event because the highest proportion of germinable seed sown that survived to a juvenile stage was 0.42% and the mean across all species was 0.12%. No natural recruitment of shrub species was observed over 5 years of observation, suggesting that recruitment is episodic and disturbance driven. Enhancing natural ‘regeneration’ of woody plants under these circumstances may be more challenging than simply fencing off remnants.  相似文献

The paradigm that tropical trees with farther seed dispersal experience lower offspring mortality is currently based on within-species studies documenting higher survival of offspring located farther from conspecific adults and/or closer to light gaps. We determined whether the paradigm also holds among species by comparing spatial patterns of offspring mortality among three sympatric Neotropical rainforest tree species with the same seed dispersers but with different dispersal abilities. First, we assessed spatially non-random mortality for each species by measuring spatial shifts of the population recruitment curve (PRC) with respect to conspecific adults and light gaps across three early life stages: dispersed seeds, young seedlings and old seedlings. Then, we determined whether PRC shifts were greater for the species with short dispersal distances than for the species with greater dispersal distances. We found that the PRC shifted away from conspecific adults consistently across life stages, but we found no consistent PRC shifts towards gaps, suggesting that mortality was related more to the proximity of conspecifics than to absence of light gaps. PRC shifts away from adults were greatest in the species with the lowest dispersal ability, supporting the paradigm. Differential PRC shifts caused the spatial distribution of offspring to become almost independent with respect to adult trees and gaps in all three species, despite large differences in seed dispersal distance among these species. Our results provide direct empirical support for the paradigm that among tropical trees, species with farther seed dispersal are less impacted by spatially non-random mortality than are similar species with shorter dispersal distances. Thus, greater dispersal effectiveness merits extra investments of trees in seed dispersal ability, even at the cost of fecundity.  相似文献

Most Hawaiian forests lack resiliency following disturbance due to the presence of non‐native and invasive plant and animal species. The montane wet forest within Hakalau Forest National Wildlife Refuge on Hawai'i island has a long history of ungulate disturbance but portions of the refuge were fenced and most ungulates excluded by the early 1990s. We examined patterns of regeneration within two 100 ha study sites in this forest following the removal of ungulates and in the absence of invasive woody tree species to determine, in part, if passive restoration techniques can be successful under these conditions. We characterized growth, mortality, and basal area (BA) changes for approximately 7,100 marked individuals of all native tree species present in two surveys over a 17–18‐year period within two hundred 30 m diameter forest plots. Considerable recruitment within plots of new trees of all species significantly changed size class distributions and erased deficits in small‐sized trees observed during the first survey, particularly for the codominant canopy tree, koa (Acacia koa). Overall, growth of established dominant 'ōhi'a trees (Metrosideros polymorpha) and recruitment of mid‐canopy trees contributed to increases in BA while high levels of mortality for large A. koa trees contributed to decreased BA. This resulted in a slight increase in BA between the two surveys (+1.9%). This study demonstrates that fencing and ungulate removal may have rescued the A. koa population by facilitating the first real pulse in recruitment in over a century, and that passive restoration can be a successful management strategy in this forest.  相似文献

Acacia trees (Leguminosae) in the Negev desert of Israel are in substantial danger of extinction as a result of high mortality, caused by anthropogenically induced water stress and very low recruitment, which is highly negatively affected by bruchid beetle infestation. Intensive seed infestation (up to 97%) by bruchids on Acacia species in the Negev desert has been described. We hypothesized that water‐stressed trees would be less able to produce secondary defense compounds in their seeds to decrease seed herbivory and hence suffer higher infestation. Thus, there should be a negative correlation between the beetle's fitness and the tree's physiological state. We further hypothesized the mechanism of the correlation to be maternal effects on beetle quality. Thus, beetles whose mothers were reared on seeds of trees in a poor state should have higher fitness, regardless of the quality of the seeds in which they were reared. We reared F1 generation Caryedon palaestinicus Southgate (Coleoptera: Bruchidae) in seeds of Acacia raddiana Savi (Leguminosae) trees in good and in poor physiological state. We then conducted a reciprocal infestation experiment enabling females to lay on seeds from both sources. We found maternal effects on offspring number but not on body mass. The major effect was the limited survival of maternal beetles on trees in good physiological state. However, contrary to our prediction, C. palaestinicus developing in seeds from Acacia raddiana in good physiological state had significantly higher body mass.  相似文献

比较了绢毛相思和大叶相思的叶特性,旱季的田间光合速率和供水短缺对光合速率、气孔传导率和蒸腾速率的影响。绢毛相思的比叶重、单位叶面积的叶绿素含量和叶绿素a/b均较大叶相思高,但叶片含水量略低。绢毛相思的中午时叶片水势为-0.6±0.05MPa,而大叶相思则为-1.18±0.07MPa。绢毛相思叶片水势降低时,叶片鲜重的变化较大叶相思大。旱季10月,两种相思的日平均光合速率相近似,但绢毛相思有较高的气孔传导率和蒸腾速率。干旱处理引起大叶相思叶片水势降低较绢毛相思大。当绢毛相思叶片水势从-0.76MPa降至-1.35MPa,日平均光合速率降低49.4%;而大叶相思,叶片水势从-1.22MPa降低至-2.2MPa,日平均光合速率降低55.0%。大叶相思叶片水势降低的幅度比较大,光合速率降低亦大。  相似文献

Schinus molle (Peruvian pepper tree) was introduced to South Africa more than 150 years ago and was widely planted, mainly along roads. Only in the last two decades has the species become naturalized and invasive in some parts of its new range, notably in semi‐arid savannas. Research is being undertaken to predict its potential for further invasion in South Africa. We studied production, dispersal and predation of seeds, seed banks, and seedling establishment in relation to land uses at three sites, namely ungrazed savanna once used as a military training ground; a savanna grazed by native game; and an ungrazed mine dump. We found that seed production and seed rain density of S. molle varied greatly between study sites, but was high at all sites (384 864–1 233 690 seeds per tree per year; 3877–9477 seeds per square metre per year). We found seeds dispersed to distances of up to 320 m from female trees, and most seeds were deposited within 50 m of putative source trees. Annual seed rain density below canopies of Acacia tortillis, the dominant native tree at all sites, was significantly lower in grazed savanna. The quality of seed rain was much reduced by endophagous predators. Seed survival in the soil was low, with no survival recorded beyond 1 year. Propagule pressure to drive the rate of recruitment: densities of seedlings and sapling densities were higher in ungrazed savanna and the ungrazed mine dump than in grazed savanna, as reflected by large numbers of young individuals, but adult : seedling ratios did not differ between savanna sites. Frequent and abundant seed production, together with effective dispersal of viable S. molle seed by birds to suitable establishment sites below trees of other species to overcome predation effects, facilitates invasion. Disturbance enhances invasion, probably by reducing competition from native plants.  相似文献

Analysis of aerial photographs indicates that woody plant biomass has rapidly increased in Hluhluwe Game Reserve over the last 40 years. Open Acacia nilotica savanna is being replaced by broadleaf species, especially Euclea spp. We were interested in whether this secondary successional shift was due to high numbers of seedlings establishing and growing to maturity under acacias (facilitation) or due to the release of already established, but suppressed individuals (gullivers) of the resprouting broadleaf species. We examined the recruitment patterns and size-class distributions (height, basal diameter) of important species in this savanna.Densities of euclea seedlings (<0.6 cm basal diameter) under Acacia nilotica were low (median of 0 and mean of 0.06 m2) below adult canopies and effectively zero in adjacent interspaces. No differences in numbers of other broadleaf species were found between open sites and under Acacia nilotica sites. Few large eucleas or other broadleaf species occurred under Acacia nilotica. Few Acacia nilotica recruits were found either under adults or in the open whereas Acacia karroo recruits were more common.The overall size class distribution for eucleas was dominated by individuals in the intermediate size class, suggesting that recruitment is not the dominant demographic process. We propose that the escape of intermediate sized eucleas from the fire trap has caused the increase in woody plants.Analysis of a time sequence of aerial photographs shows that invasion occurred rapidly between 1954 and 1975. A common feature for sites where woody plant invasion has taken place, was the presence of barriers to fire (especially roads). We suggest that the recent and rapid increase in woody vegetation is due to a decrease in the frequency of intense fires, rather than the recent absence of megaherbivores which allowed Acacia nilotica establishment. Few intense fires allow suppressed tree or shrub individuals, ('gullivers'), to escape the grass/fire layer and thereby become tall and fire-resistant. This release may explain the rapid rate of invasion by inherently slow growing broad-leaf species.  相似文献

Riparian habitats are particularly prone to invasion of non-indigenous plant species and several species have been shown to rapidly expand their range along river networks, possibly mediated by the occurrence of frequent long-distance seed dispersal events. However, there is still relatively little empirical evidence for long-distance seed dispersal along river networks and most studies to date are inconclusive with regards to the direction (upstream vs. downstream) of seed movement. Using assignment analyses based on dominant AFLP markers, we provide empirical evidence that downstream long-distance seed dispersal has facilitated range expansion of the exotic plant Sisymbrium austriacum along the Meuse River. Of 242 sampled individuals, 13 (5.4%) were allocated to a population other than the one from which it was sampled. Of these, nine (3.7%) individuals were assigned to a known population within the area, the furthest being more than 20 km away from the population from which it was sampled. All putative source populations were located upstream, thus providing strong evidence for downstream migration of propagules. These results support the general view that river systems may serve as efficient transport vectors of plant species and thus may play an important role in increasing the spatial spread and range expansion of exotic plant species.  相似文献

A major target for environmental managers when trying to minimise the road-barrier effect on wildlife is to improve permeability to animal movements. Previous studies have demonstrated that drainage culverts are used by vertebrates, although knowledge of the main influencing factors remains limited. The use of 34 culverts from two roads in southern Portugal, differing in traffic volume, vehicle speeds and configuration, was evaluated by the analysis of terrestrial vertebrate footprint data (408 passage-operative days). Culvert crossings were related to various explanatory variables by means of canonical ordination techniques. We recorded 901 complete crossings, corresponding to an average of 2.2 crossings/culvert/operative day. Thirteen taxa were detected, all in more than one passage. Animal species included reptiles, small mammals, lagomorphs, carnivores and domestic dogs and cats. Our results suggest that fencing might have a funnelling effect, directing larger animals toward culverts. Also, vegetation covering culvert entrances seems to have a positive effect, particularly on genets; longer passages with entrances far from the pavement were, apparently, avoided by smaller animals; a lower number of crossings was detected on passages with detritus pits; the closest passages to urban areas are more often used by domestic species; forest-living species favour passages with low, open land cover nearby; and smaller species, like lagomorphs and small mammals, appear to use more culverts near the pavement, which probably reflects the importance of road verges as refuges for these species. Although not used by all species present in the study area, constructing numerous passages of different sizes without detritus pits and which are distributed along roads might be an important step in mitigating road fragmentation effects on animal populations.  相似文献

In monospecific stands of Acacia drepanolobium in Laikipia, Kenya, virtually all but the smallest trees are occupied by one of four species of ants. Although trees are a limiting resource, all four ant species are maintained in this system. Three separate lines of evidence confirm a linear dominance hierarchy among these four ants: (1) experimentally staged conflicts, (2) natural transitions among 1773 tagged trees over a 6-month period, and (3) the average sizes of trees occupied by ants of different species. Short-term dynamics during a drying period reveal that many smaller trees (<1 m) occupied by dominant ants were subsequently abandoned, and that abandoned trees had grown more slowly than those that were not abandoned. Height growth increments over 6 months were generally independent of ant occupant, but increased with tree height. Among taller trees (>1 m), changes in ant occupation congruent with the dominance hierarchy (i.e., transitions from more subordinate ant species to more dominant ant species) occurred on trees that grew faster than average. In contrast, the (less frequent) changes in ant occupation ”against” the direction of the dominance hierarchy occurred on trees that grew more slowly than average. Observed correlations between tree vigor and takeover direction suggest that colony growth of dominant ant species is either favored in more productive microhabitats, or that such colonies differentially seek out healthier trees for conquest. Colonies of dominant species may differentially abandon more slowly growing trees during (dry) periods of retrenchment, or suffer higher mortality on these trees. Subordinate ant species appear to move onto these abandoned trees and, to a lesser extent, colonize new recruits in the sapling class. These data reveal that within a simple linear dominance hierarchy, short-term variations exist that may reveal underlying mechanisms associated with coexistence. The impact of elephants on the woody plant community through debarking was investigated in Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves, Kenya. Acacia elatior Brenan , the most abundant tree species in the riverine zone, accounted for 68% (n = 1375) of woody plants. A. tortilis (Forsskal) Hayne dominated plots away from the river. Debarking incidences were significantly higher for A. elatior than for other species indicating selective utilization. The riverine zone by virtue of having more trees of the preferred species, A. elatior, had the highest debarking incidences. Presence of very few saplings along the river is attributed to both elephant trampling and herbivory by other species. An estimated 38.5% and 22.5% of the riverine A. elatior and A. tortilis trees respectively, were bound to die within the next 4–5 years because of severe debarking, ≥75% of bark circumference. Debarking was positively correlated with stem circumference; the medium-sized trees being the worst affected by the elephants' selective debarking behaviour. Intense debarking incidences were recorded during the dry season. Through the elephants' selective debarking, the riverine habitat is bound to open up gradually, leading to considerable habitat change in the near future. Elephant impact on vegetation is less away from the river and increases with their densities.  相似文献

In order to assess the importance of seed dispersal (escape and colonization hypotheses), I used transplant experiments for seeds and seedlings of 5–11 plant species with fleshy fruits in a lowland tropical forest (Tinigua National Park, Colombia). I controlled seed density, distance to parental tree, and habitat type. I monitored seed removal, seedling survival, and seedling growth during the first year of development for an average of 554 seeds and 169 seedlings for each species. I supplemented the experimental results with measurements of natural recruitment. I found little support for the escape hypothesis during the seed and seedling stages. For six species that showed differences in seed removal associated with distance, five showed highest removal away from, than close to parent trees, suggesting predator satiation. Seedling survival during the first year was not consistently associated with low densities and long distances from parent trees. For the majority of species, seedlings did not survive flooding in low basins, and there was growth advantage for most plant species in canopy gaps. These differences imply advantages for seed dispersal to adequate habitats, as predicted by the colonization hypothesis. In contrast to experiments, strong negative distance-dependent effects were evident when analyzing natural recruitment patterns. The ratio between saplings and seedlings was higher away from parent trees for the species with enough recruitment to be analyzed and this suggests that a negative distance-dependent effect may also occur after seedling establishment. This pattern is suspected for several other species, but an analysis with some of the other most common trees showed a variety of negative, neutral, and positive distance dependent effects. This study emphasizes the importance of long-term studies to asses the role of seed dispersal.  相似文献

Question: How do species traits and abiotic factors influence the extent of hydrochorous dispersal into and out of a small floodplain area along a free‐flowing river in The Netherlands? Location: The Kappersbult nature reserve (53°07′28″N, 6°37′14″E), which is a floodplain along the Dutch River Drentsche Aa. Methods: Seeds transported by the river were collected in fine mesh nets for 24 consecutive hours once or twice a week for 1 year, upstream and downstream of the studied floodplain. Data on the captured seeds were related to species traits and abiotic factors and species composition in the floodplain. Results: The floodplain functioned both as a seed source and sink. High levels of river water seemed to promote seed transport to or from the floodplain. Seeds of riverbank species occurred significantly more often in the river water than expected. Net source species had significantly higher seed production, taller stature and higher seed buoyancy, but lower site elevation than net sink species. Seed weight was significantly higher for sink species than for other species. Conclusion: Our study found that inundation, and therefore more natural river water management, is a prerequisite for seed transport to and from a floodplain. The restoration of target floodplain vegetation may be successful for common species that produce many seeds and grow in proximity to the river. Consequently, it is expected that the probability of restoring vegetation types that occur further from the river, such as wet grasslands, by hydrochorous dispersal is low.  相似文献

Introduced into several countries worldwide for agroforestry, Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit is a typical ‘conflict species’ that invades several riparian, forested and disturbed habitats in South Africa. The seed beetle Acanthoscelides macrophthalmus (Schaeffer) (Chrysomelidae: Bruchinae) was subsequently deployed as a seed-reducing agent to offset its excessive seed output. However, exploratory egg-exposure trials, in which native Acacia s.l. trees were used as ‘surrogate host plants’, suggested that high egg mortality is reducing the beetle's impact. The aims of this study were to (1) verify this suspicion by comparing the mortality of eggs exposed in L. leucocephala and Acacia nilotica (L.) Willd ex Del. stands and (2) determine whether height of exposure in the canopy (i.e. oviposition site selection) influences the different mortality factors. Although lower than in the exploratory trials, egg mortality was considerable, ranging from 30 to 50% in most instances. While unaffected by height of exposure, the overall egg mortality (i.e. all factors) was significantly lower in seeds exposed on L. leucocephala. Mortality was not only mostly attributed to parasitism (51% of mortality), but also predation (30%) and unknown factors (19%). While unexplained mortality and predation were not influenced by tree species or height of exposure, parasitism increased significantly with height above ground and was significantly lower in seeds exposed on L. leucocephala. Egg mortality is thus one of several factors that appears to be limiting the efficacy of A. macrophthalmus in South Africa.  相似文献

1. Overlapping river and road networks provide a framework for studying the complex interactions between natural and human systems, with river‐road intersections as focal areas of study. Roads can alter the morphology of stream channels, pose barriers to freshwater fauna, provide easy access to streams for humans and non‐native species and accelerate the expansion of urban development. 2. We determined what variables control the structure of diadromous fish and shrimp communities and assessed whether particular road crossings altered community structure in north‐eastern Puerto Rico. We identified 24 sites that represented a range of river and road sizes across two catchments that drain El Yunque National Forest in Puerto Rico. 3. The location of natural barriers and the size of stream pools were the most important variables for predicting six of fifteen fish and shrimp distributions. Predatory fishes were predicted to be limited to areas in the river network below large, steep waterfalls, whereas adult shrimp Atya lanipes (Atyidae) were predicted to be present above these waterfalls. The fish Awaous banana was predicted to be present in pools >11.6 m wide, whereas the shrimp Xiphocaris elongata was predicted to be present in pools <10.4 m wide. The distributions of nine species were predicted poorly, but three of these species were common and three were rare. 4. Although urban and agricultural land covers were among the top three predictors of five species distributions, they were probably good predictors because they were correlated with the natural gradient. Further study is necessary to disentangle natural and anthropogenic gradients. 5. Road crossings, 10 of which were culverts, were not dispersal barriers for fishes or shrimps. On average, species were present both upstream and downstream from road crossings at 68% of sites where they occurred. Absences upstream or downstream from road crossings occurred at 16% of sites each and likely resulted from a failure to detect species. 6. Several existing features of these catchments and taxa may aid in fish and shrimp conservation. The headwaters are protected by management practices of El Yunque National Forest, connectivity within the river network has been maintained, and the diadromous life history of these organisms makes them resilient to pulsed disturbances.  相似文献

Road mortality is thought to be a leading cause of turtle population decline. However, empirical evidence of the direct negative effects of road mortality on turtle population abundance is lacking. The purpose of this study was to provide a strong test of the prediction that roads reduce turtle population abundance. While controlling for potentially confounding variables, we compared relative abundance of painted turtles (Chrysemys picta) in 20 ponds in Eastern Ontario, 10 as close as possible to high traffic roads (Road sites) and 10 as far as possible from any major roads (No Road sites). There was no significant effect of roads on painted turtle relative abundance. Furthermore, our data do not support other predictions of the road mortality hypothesis; we observed neither a higher relative frequency of males to females at Road sites than at No Road sites, nor a lower average body size of turtles at Road than at No Road sites. We speculate that, although roads can cause substantial adult mortality in turtles, other factors, such as release from predation on adults and/or nests close to roads counter the negative effect of road mortality in some populations. We suggest that road mitigation for painted turtles can be limited to locations where turtles are forced to migrate across high traffic roads due, for example, to destruction of local nesting habitat or seasonal drying of ponds. This conclusion should not be extrapolated to other species of turtles, where road mortality could have a larger population-level effect than on painted turtles.  相似文献
