Circadian rhythm of feeding, oviposition, and emergence of boll weevil adults were determined at five different photophases (24, 14, 12, 10, and 0 hours) and a constant 27℃ temperature, 65% RH in the laboratory. Squares from Petri dishes, where they were exposed to boll weevil females, were removed and examined for feeding and oviposition punctures every 4 hours during daylight (0700-1900 h) and every 12 h at night (1900-0700 h) over eight consecutive days. Cohorts of randomly selected egg-punctured squares were sampled from ovipositing females at 0700, 1100, 1500, and 1900 during 24 hours and under different photophase treatments, and maintained in Petri dishes at 27 + I℃, 65% RH. Dishes were observed twice daily (1900 and 0700 h) for adults emerging at day or night. Circadian rhythm of oviposition was not affected by the length of the photophase. The boll weevil has round-the-clock circadian rhythm of oviposition, with a daytime preference. We observed that 82.4%-86.0% of the boll weevil eggs were deposited between 0700 and 1900 h, and 14.0%-17.6% between 1900 and 0700 h during a 24-h period. Feeding of boll weevil females in photoperiods 24:0 h (complete light) and 0:24 h (complete darkness) did not significantly change between 0700-1900 h versus 1900-0700 h, while the d .ally cycle of light and darkness in other photoperiods significantly increased the feeding punctures from 0700-1900 compared with 1900-0700 h. The circadian rhythm of emergence depended significantly on the time of oviposition and the length of the photophase. Investigation of boll weevil circadian rhythm provides a better understanding of boll weevil ecology and reveals potential weak links for improving control technologies targeting their reproductive strategies.  相似文献

The experiments aim to investigate the mechanism of photoperiodic time measurement during photoperiodic ovarian response of subtropical yellow-throated sparrow. Groups of the photosensitive female birds were exposed to various night-interruption cycles for a period of 35 days. These light-dark cycles consisted of a basic photophase of 6h and 1h photointerruption of the 18h dark phase in 24h cycle at different points. A control group was also placed under 7L/17D. Ovarian response was observed in the night-interruption cycles in which the photointerruption of dark phase was made 12h after the onset of basic photophase. The results are consistent with the Bünning hypothesis and indicate that an endogenous circadian rhythm is involved in photoperiodic time measurement during initiation of ovarian growth in this species.  相似文献

The present study was reported to examine whether the circannual pupation rhythm in Anthrenus verbasci is derived from a circadian rhythm through a process of frequency demultiplication. This frequency demultiplication hypothesis requires that the period of the circannual rhythm is proportional to the period of the entrained circadian rhythm. When larvae were reared under constant photoperiods of T = 20h, 22h, 24h and 26h at 20°C, the larval duration differed among the photoperiodic conditions, although there was no positive correlation between the period of T cycle and larval duration. The differences among photoperiods may have been caused by the duration of the photophase. Therefore, the results did not support the frequency demultiplication hypothesis.  相似文献

Analysis of changes in the plasma levels of GTH II over a 24-h day/night cycle revealed statistically significant circadian or ultradian variation or both in its circulating level during the gonadally active months of the reproductive cycle. The 24-h average and amplitude of circadian or ultradian rhythm in GTH II increased with the advancement of ovarian development and maturation. In April, a single peak in GTH II level was noticed in the night at 20.6 h. In contrast, in May, June and July a biphasic pattern (ultradian rhythm) was noticed with two characteristic peaks, one in the photophase and the other in the scotophase. In addition, in May a statistically significant circadian rhythm in plasma GTH II was validated with a peak located at 20.1 h. These rhythms seem to have physiological significance. The ultradian rhythm with two peaks during the reproductively active phase appears to provide a suitable physiological milieu for the temporally different yet synchronous population of oocytes for the secretion of steroids. Thus, the observed temporal organization in GTH II may have physiological consequences leading to accomplishment of reproductive process at appropriate time of the year.  相似文献

Thiosulfate sulfurtransferase (TST) is an important 'enzyme of protection,' that accelerates the detoxification of cyanide, converting it into thiocyanate. The TST physiological rhythm was investigated at wks 2, 4, and 8 of post-natal development (PND) in the mouse. The results revealed a statistically significant gender-related difference, with the highest activity in females, at all the documented PND stages. In the second week of PND (pre-weaning time), the circadian rhythm of the enzyme activity was associated with ultradian components. The prominent circadian rhythm (τ=24 h) peaked at the beginning of the light span, more precisely ∼3 HALO (Hours After Light Onset). A week after weaning (wk 4 of PND), an impairment of the rhythm, with the peak shifted toward the second half of photophase, was recorded. Four to 6 wks later, about wk 8 of PND, the circadian rhythm pattern was stabilized, with its peak then located at the beginning of the dark span (13 HALO). The obtained results showed a 12 h phase-shift of the circadian TST peak time during PND, suggesting that the rhythm stabilization is age-dependent.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. The larviposition of adult apterous Myzus persicae previously entrained to LD 18:6 showed a marked rhythm both under LD 12:12 (on plants reared in LD 18:6) and under LL (on plants reared in LL). No rhythm was detectable in larviposition by adults reared in LL. Larviposition peaked towards the end of the photophase in LD 12:12. Fresh-weight gain also showed a circadian rhythm with the greatest weight increases during the photophase. Re-entrainment from LD 12:12 to DL 12:12 was not complete after 10 days. It is concluded that the changes in the light cycle did not affect the aphids through the plant.  相似文献

The effects of varying photophase and altitude of origin on the phase angle difference (Ψ) of the circadian rhythm of oviposition during entrainment to light‐dark (LD) cycles and the aftereffects of such photophases on the period of the free‐running rhythm (τ) in constant darkness (DD) were evaluated in two Himalayan strains of Drosophila ananassae, the high‐altitude (HA) strain from Badrinath (5,123 m above sea level=ASL) and the low‐altitude (LA) strain from Firozpur (179 m ASL). The Ψ (i.e., the hours from lights‐on of the LD cycle to oviposition median) of both strains was determined in LD cycles in which the photophase at 100 lux varied from 6 to 18 h/24 h. The HA strain was entrained by all LD cycles except the one with 6 h photophase in which it was weakly rhythmic, but the LA strain was entrained by only three LD cycles with photophases of 10, 12, and 14 h, but photophases of 6, 8, 16, and 18 h rendered it arrhythmic. Lights‐off transition of LD cycles was the phase‐determining signal for both strains as oviposition medians of the HA strain occurred~6 h prior to lights‐off, while those of the LA strain occurred~1 h after lights‐off. The Ψ of the HA strain increased from~2 h in 8 h photophase to~11 h in 18 h photophase, while that of the LA strain increased from~11 h in 10 h photophase to~15 h in 14 h photophase. The aftereffects of photophase of the prior entraining LD cycles on τ in DD were determined by transferring flies from LD cycles to DD. The τ of the HA strain increased from~19 to~25 h when transferred to DD from LD 8:16 and LD 18:6 cycles, respectively, whereas the τ of the LA strain increased from~26 to~28 h when transferred to DD from LD 10:14 and LD 14:10 cycles, respectively. Thus, these results demonstrate that the photophases of entraining LD cycles and the altitude of origin affected several parameters of entrainment and the period of the free‐running rhythm of these strains.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. In Holomelina lamae Freeman daily eclosion of adults is gated, with males emerging before females. By advancing the onset of photophase and by delaying the onset of scotophase, it was demonstrated that lights-on acts as the main phase-setting cue for calling. Few females call on the day they eclose. Calling is initiated c. 9 h after the onset of photophase in 2-day-old females, and shifts to earlier times in older females. The duration of calling also increases with age. That calling is controlled by an endogenous circadian clock is indicated by its persistence in continuous light (LL) and dark (DD). In LL calling is dampened rapidly, but a single scotophase re-entrains the rhythm. Decreases in temperature advance the onset of calling and the mean hour of calling, while increases in temperature delay both. However, the magnitudes of such phase-shifts depended upon hour of the photoperiod. Moreover, cooling and heating appears to exert both transient and long-term effects on the calling rhythm. An 8 h period at a reduced temperature in LL induces calling in females whose calling is dampened, and entrains the calling rhythm. Females maintained in DD from second instar larvae to the adult stage exhibit a circadian calling rhythm set by eclosion.  相似文献

The pheromone-mediated upwind flight of male turnip moths was observed in a flight tunnel at different times of day under conditions of a light-dark (LD) cycle, constant darkness (DD), and a shifted photoperiod. Under both LD and DD conditions, a significantly larger number of males flew to the pheromone during both the scotophase and the subjective scotophase than during the photophase and the subjective photophase for 2 consecutive days. When 1-day-old moths were transferred to a shifted LD cycle with lights turned off 4 h earlier, male behavioral responses to the pheromone advanced in time accordingly by 4 h. This showed that male behavioral responses to the pheromone are under the control of an endogenous oscillator. To further examine the level at which the circadian rhythm of the male behavioral response is regulated, the authors tested the olfactory responses of male antennal receptors to pheromone stimuli by means of electroantennograms (EAG) at different times of day. No significant variation in the sensitivity of the male antennal response to the pheromone was observed in terms of time of day. The results suggest that circadian regulation of the rhythmic behavioral response to pheromones in the male Agrotis occurs at the central nervous system level.  相似文献

The effects of varying photophase and altitude of origin on the phase angle difference (Ψ) of the circadian rhythm of oviposition during entrainment to light-dark (LD) cycles and the aftereffects of such photophases on the period of the free-running rhythm (τ) in constant darkness (DD) were evaluated in two Himalayan strains of Drosophila ananassae, the high-altitude (HA) strain from Badrinath (5,123 m above sea level=ASL) and the low-altitude (LA) strain from Firozpur (179 m ASL). The Ψ (i.e., the hours from lights-on of the LD cycle to oviposition median) of both strains was determined in LD cycles in which the photophase at 100 lux varied from 6 to 18 h/24 h. Lights-off transition of LD cycles was the phase-determining signal for both strains as oviposition medians of the HA strain occurred∼6 h prior to lights-off, while those of the LA strain occurred∼1 h after lights-off. The Ψ of the HA strain increased from∼2 h in 8 h photophase to∼11 h in 18 h photophase, while that of the LA strain increased from∼11 h in 10 h photophase to∼15 h in 14 h photophase. The aftereffects of photophase of the prior entraining LD cycles on τ in DD were determined by transferring flies from LD cycles to DD. The circadian variation of pheromone production in the turnip moth, Agrotis segetum, was characterized by quantifying (Z)-7-dodecenyl acetate (Z7-12:OAc), the most abundant pheromone component produced by female turnip moth, at different times of day. Under 17:7 h light-dark cycle (LD), the peak of Z7-12:OAc production occurred around 4 h into the scotophase, while there was very little pheromone production during the photophase. When females were maintained under constant darkness (DD), the periodicity of pheromone production was sustained for 3 consecutive days. Furthermore, the rhythm in pheromone production could be entrained to a shifted LD. These results demonstrate that the pheromone production in the turnip moth is regulated endogenously by a circadian clock. To understand how the circadian rhythm of pheromone production is generated, circadian variation of pheromone- biosynthesis-activating neuropeptide (PBAN)-like activity in the brain-suboesophageal ganglion complexes (Br-SOG), hemolymph, and ventral nerve cord (VNC) was also examined. Under both LD and DD, only the VNC displayed a circadian variation in the PBAN-like activity, which was significantly higher during the late-photophase than that in the scotophase. In addition, the present study showed that removal of VNC in isolated abdomen did not affect PBAN stimulation of pheromone production, while severing the VNC impaired normal pheromone production. The role of Br-SOG, VNC, and hemolymph in the regulation of the periodicity of pheromone production is discussed.  相似文献

A circadian morphological rhythm of the pineal organ, as judged by changes in the nuclear volume of the photoreceptor cells, was found in sexually mature male Yellow-bellied toads (Bombina variegata) maintained continuously at 26 degrees C and on a 17L/7D illumination cycle. The greatest nuclear volume occurred at the photophase (16.00 h), and the lowest at the end of the scotophase (4.00 h).  相似文献

To investigate the functional involvement of carotenoid in the insect circadian rhythm, we observed the effect of carotenoid depletion on the hatching patterns of the silkworm under several light conditions. When eggs were transferred from continuous light (LL) to continuous darkness (DD), an overt hatching rhythm was initiated. The first hatching peak, which was observed at 13.2 h after the transfer in the carotenoid-depleted silkworm, was reduced remarkably in both control groups (carotenoid-rich and carotenoid-depleted but with lutein supplementation), though subsequent peaks occurred with similar timing. Under LD 4 : 20, LD 12 : 12 and LD 20 :4, hatching patterns depended on the dietary carotenoid and the light intensity of the photophase. At a low light intensity, carotenoid depletion suppressed hatching as a masking effect just after light-on. Under LD 4 : 20 at a low light illumination, hatchings in the carotenoid-depleted silkworm were observed during scotophase, but few larvae hatched during scotophase in the control groups. Our findings suggest that carotenoid is not indispensable for the photoreception, formation and entrainment of the circadian hatching rhythm, but that a carotenoid-dependent process that is induced by light-off and damps out in an hour-glass mode, suppresses the hatching during darkness without affecting the circadian oscillation. The possibility that this carotenoid-dependent process is involved in the photoperiodic induction in the silkworm was discussed.  相似文献

A circadian rhythm in the activity of nitrate reductase (NR: EC 1.6.6.1) isolated from the marine red algae Gracilaria tenuistipitata is shown to be attributable to the daily oscillation of protein levels. The experiments reported here indicate that light quality has differential effects over NR expression. In extracts of algae grown under white light : dark, red light : dark and blue light : dark cycle, the activity of NR peaks during photophase, as does photosynthesis. Staining with a monoclonal antibody (NR10), raised against NR purified from Porphyra yezoensis, shows that the amount of protein changes by a factor of about 20, with a maximum occurring during photophase when algae are submitted to white and blue light. Red light changes the circadian rhythm of NR protein levels and also inhibits its night degradation. Illumination with blue light is able to restore the NR activity as well as its protein levels only when the light irradiance was the same of the white light. Surprisingly, the red light promoted 40% induction on NR activity under the same conditions.  相似文献

The adult emergence rhythm of Telenomus busseolae, an egg parasitoid of Sesamia nonagrioides, was examined when parasitoids were exposed to different light-dark regimes. Most of the adult parasitoids emerged throughout the whole period of the photoperiodic cycle. Peak male emergence occurred 2–5 hours earlier than that of females. Adult emergence was asynchronous in continuous darkness or light. However, regimes of alternative light and dark phases such as L4:D20, L8:D16, L12:D12, L16:D8 and L20:D4 h generated a population rhythm with a period length of 24 hours. The peak of the emergence activity moves from the scotophase to the middle of the photophase with an increase of the photophase from 4 to 20 h. Rhythmical activity of adults was synchronised within 2 cycles when immature stages of parasitoid grow under continuous light conditions (LL) and then transferred to L12:D12. Moreover, emergence rhythm persisted and continued in a free-run with a period length of less than 24 hours by transferring a rhythmic culture from L12:D12 h to LL or RR (continuous red light) conditions, indicating the existence of a circadian rhythm. The ecological implications of the expression rhythm relate to better survival of the parasitoids.  相似文献

To demonstrate the involvement of circadian rhythm in photoperiodic time measurement, photosensitive female blackheaded buntings were kept under different photoperiodic schedules consisting of 6 h of main photophase coupled with scotophases of various durations. Ovarian mass and circulating plasma estradiol concentration were found to be elevated in cycles of 6L:6D, 6L:36D, 6L:54D and in control 15L:9D groups. But cycles of 6L:18D, 6L:42D and 6L:66D did not stimulate ovarian growth or elevate circulating plasma estradiol concentration. These results are consistent with the Bünning hypothesis according to which a photoperiodic response is elicited as a result of the coincidence of light with the photoinducible phase of an endogenous circadian rhythm. The results thus indicate the involvement of a circadian rhythm of photoinducibility in ovarian growth and estradiol secretion.  相似文献
