In the article by Bandyopadhyay et al. entitled “Spermidinyl-CoA-based HAT inhibitors block DNA repair and provide cancer-specific chemo- and radiosensitization,” which appeared in the September 1, 2009 issue of Cell Cycle (pp.2779-88), the first sentence in part (D) of the legend to Figure 3 appeared incorrectly as “(D) Inhibition of g-H2A.X acetylation by 1a: Top row – SDS-PAGE/Western of g-H2A.X in H358 cells treated with 10 µM CPT (1 hour) followed by incubation for an additional hour in the presence (right) or absence (left) of 50 µM 1a (60 µg/lane).” The correct sentence reads as follows: “(D) Inhibition of g-H2A.X acetylation by 1a: Top row – SDS-PAGE/Western of g-H2A.X in H358 cells treated with 5nM CPT (18 hours) in the presence (right lane) or absence (left lane) of 50 µM 1a (60 µg/lane).”  相似文献

A new term, “trophon”, has been introduced for the feeding and sexually propagating unit in the stolonate ctenostomes; the “stolon” and the “trophon” represent “sukzooids”, because they are homologous only to parts of the autozooids in the uniserially arranged ctenostomes. – The ontogeny of the muscles, especially the parietal muscles, has been studied in 17 species of ctenostomatous bryozoans belonging to different sub-groups of this order; the main effort was directed toward the details of the differentiations in living animals (14 of the investigated species). In various species of the Ctenostomata two separate sets of parietal muscles develop – probably as a consequence of the elongation of the cystid; the functional parietal muscles in the trophons of the stolonial forms are homologous to the secondary parietal muscles found in several uniserial ctenostomes. Contrary to the supposition by Soule (1954) in the different families of the serially arranged forms the muscles appear in different sequences during the development of the zooid and partly have different ontogenetical fates. Neither the “Carnosa” nor the “Paludicellea” (s. 1.) nor the “Stolonifera” can be maintained as taxa with the argument of a similar ontogeny of the muscles. A detailed comparison regarding the fate of the parietal muscles (and the polypide anlage) showed similarities between certain of the uniserial to either some of the stolonial, the sheet like, or the cystid-fusing forms suggesting a separate evolutionary origin of the advanced forms in those groups of the serially growing forms. – A new family, Pottsiellidae fam. nov., has been introduced and defined.  相似文献

The goals of the subproject “molluscs” within the inter‐disciplinary research project “Indicator systems for the characterisation and prediction of ecological changes in floodplain systems” were: – develop further existing mollusc‐based indicator systems of site quality and to test their transferability, – characterise grassland sites within the recent floodplains of three study areas along the Elbe River, – analyse the relationships between indicator species‐/groups and abiotic parameters, – compile and use selected species traits in the analytical process. The results clearly show several characteristic species groups related to the hydrology of the sites (i.e. inundation and desiccation regime) and on to the degree of agricultural use. These dependencies can be interpreted by the simultaneous analysis of the species traits. “Models” are proposed, that are applicable to nature protection measures at the landscape scale. Between 1946 and 1960, a new phenomenon emerged in the field of bacteriology. “Bacterial sex,” as it was called, revolutionized the study of genetics, largely by making available a whole new class of cheap, fast-growing, and easily manipulated organisms. But what was “bacterial sex?” How could single-celled organisms have “sex” or even be sexually differentiated? The technical language used in the scientific press – the public and inalienable face of 20th century science – to describe this apparently neuter organism was explicit: the cells “copulated,” had “intimate contract,” “conjugal unions,” and engaged in “ménage ã trois” relationships. And yet, to describe bacteria as sexually reproducing organisms, the definition of sex itself had to change. Despite manifold contradictions and the availability of alternative language, the notion of sexually active (even promiscuous) single-celled organisms has persisted, even into contemporary textbooks on cell biology and genetics. In this paper I examine the ways in which bacteria were brought into the genetic fold, sexualized, and given gender; I also consider the issues underlying the durability of “bacterial sex.”  相似文献

A hostile desert – or still more? The Bunter During the time span of the Bunter a continental, semiarid to arid climate with high temperatures prevailed in the “Germanic Basin”. The sediments deposited are often “coloured” – mostly red – because of the oxidizing conditions. They mostly represent braided river systems and large flood plains. In the Upper Bunter a connection to the Tethys sea existed. The evaporation of salt water led to the formation of thick layers of hydrogenetic rocks in the Early Upper Bunter. Palynomorphs and the famous fossil communities found are providing evidence of life and climate during the Bunter period.  相似文献

The presented article highlights the process of biofuel production with a special focus on bioethanol. After a short introduction to the “problems” of biofuels – the “first generation” biofuels (in regards to their competition to feed and food production) and the “second generation” biofuels (in regards to the required more complex process technology) − the different steps in the process from natural resources towards the final product are presented and the underlying biotechnological challenges discussed: the pre-treatment of the natural resources followed by the biotechnological processes of hydrolysis and fermentation. Topics such as enzyme screening for efficient or even multi-step hydrolysis as well as microbial strain selection under process conditions and the optimization of the anaerobic fermentative conversion of the saccharides to bioethanol are discussed. Optimizing the production of bioethanol to be competitive with petrochemical fuels is the main challenge for the underlying process development.  相似文献

Nineteenth-century British entomologist William Kirby is best known for his generic division of bees based on tongues and his vigorous defence of natural theology. Focusing on these aspects of Kirby’s work has lead many current scholars to characterise Kirby as an “essentialist.” As a result of this characterisation, many important aspects of his work, Monographia Apum Angliæ (1802) have been over-looked or misunderstood. Kirby’s religious devotion, for example, have lead some scholars to assume Kirby used the term “type” for connecting an ontological assumption about essences with a creationist assumption about species fixity, which I argue conceals a variety of ways Kirby employed the term. Also, Kirby frequently cautioned against organising a classification system exclusively by what he called “analytic reasoning,” a style of reasoning 20th century scholars often associate with Aristotelian logic of division. I argue that Kirby’s critique of analytic reasoning brought the virtues of his own methodological agenda into sharp relief. Kirby used familiar metaphors in the natural history literature – Ariadne’s thread, the Eleusinian mysteries, and Bacon’s bee and spider metaphors – to emphasise the virtues of building tradition and cooperation in the goals and methodological practices of 19th century British naturalists.  相似文献

This study argues the thesis that a set of guidelines ‐ firmly rooted in a particular interpretation of African moral theory, specifically, Ubuntu – will do a better job than current medical ethics frameworks, in addressing ethical challenges around misattributed parentage within the clinical context. Incidental information such as information with significant personal/health implications raises unique challenges for medical professionals. For example, withholding information of misattributed paternity accidentally discovered in clinical interactions may be seen by a patient as a violation of his/her right‐to‐know. Contrarily, disclosure where a patient has not requested information – or where establishing paternity is not the purpose of clinical visit/interaction – may be taken by the patient as a violation of his/her right ‘not‐to‐know’. Resolving these challenges remain a herculean task. African moral theory contains an under‐emphasized value for addressing such ethical challenges around misattributed parentage in the field of transplant. I seek to contribute this knowledge; and enhance clinician‐patient relationship. This study builds off three completed systematic reviews, which aimed to answer the following questions: “what are the ethical challenges regarding information health professionals face within the clinical contest?” and “what core aspects (or common themes) of Ubuntu can be identified in existing literature describing the same?” In this present study, I applied the definition of Ubuntu which captures the core aspects of the theory in ethical literature on the same, to address ethical issues around unsought information of misattributed parentage in the field of transplant.  相似文献

Background – This paper is a concrete example of the problems raised by the need of constructing the time-qualified reference limits (chronodesms) for blood pressure (BP), in order to clinically estimate the hemodynamic parameter in its intrinsic nychtohemeral variability. Methods – Assuming that the noninvasive ambulatory BP monitoring (ABPM) is the eligible technique for this need, it must be realized that the BP chronodems may be of two types, depending on the sample being used for their calculation. The first type may be regarded as “ a priori ” because of the fact that they are derived by a sample of normotensive subjects who are unavoidably recruited via “ causal ” sphygmomanometric measurements and reclassified as normotensive by comparing their ABPM to the fixed reference limits (monodesms) given by WHO (monodiagnosis). Therefore, the “ a priori ” BP chonodesms are by principle derived by subjects who could not be correctly classified as normotensive, their ABPM being not tested versus the time-varying physiological limits. The second type may regarded as “ a posteriori ” in virtue of the fact that they may be constructed on a sample which contemplates the previous subjects who result to be true normotensive via the reassessment of their ABPM versus the “ a priori ” BP chronodesms (chronodiagnosis). The “ a posteriori ” chronodesms may be regarded as biometrically reliable, whether the sample for their construction is additionally constituted by those subjects of the local population who have been erroneously monodiagnosed as hypertensive, while they result to be true normotensive via the chronodiagnostic comparison of their ABPM versus the “ a priori ” BP chronodesms. Results – The biometric reliability of the “ a posteriori ” BP chronodems is demonstrated by the fact that their upper limits are statistically significantly less pronounced due to the fact that they are provided by a sample which has been depured by the falsely monodiagnosed normotensives. Conclusions – The “ a posteriori ” BP upper chronodesms are the time-qualified reference limits which should be used in clinical practice for the chronodiagnosis of hypertension.  相似文献

Could exogenous genes from another biosphere have aided the evolution of life on Earth's surface over the last half-billion years? That possibility was considered by Thomas Gold in 1992, when he hypothesized that a “deep hot biosphere” (DHB) resides independently well below its cooler surface counterpart. And he suggested that “… in the long term … there may occasionally be beneficial exchanges of genetic material between microbial life at depth and the surface life.” Thus, the question: what evidence is there to support Gold's notion that exogenous genes from the DHB – let us call them “bioplutons” – ever bestowed benefits on the evolution of surface life? In pursuit of this question I drafted a null hypothesis: “Nothing beyond our own biosphere, as we know it today, renders any kind of genetic benefits to biological evolution.” After objectively analyzing the evidence and arguments pro and con I failed to reject the null hypothesis, given what we know today, especially the fact that no genetic imprint from the DHB has been identified in eukaryotic genomes. But my conclusion is regarded as tentative, because the fundamentals of Gold's argument, collectively referred to herein as “bioplutonism,” might be confirmed eventually with successful probes into the DHB, and with the sampling of its alleged genetic material.  相似文献
