Nematology on a world basis has experienced phenomenal growth during the last 25 years. Major influences responsible for this growth are discussed. Education of nematologists has been most evident in only a few developed nations. Some developing countries are now beginning to train nationals as nematologists. Research programs in developed countries are more intensive than in developing nations, largely because of available resources and priorities given to solving nematological problems. Developed nations have been able to take advantage of technological advances almost immediately, whereas in developing nations the lack of resources and constraints imposed by certain social or political conditions has made this difficult. Indications are that emphasis in training nematologists in developed countries may have reached a plateau, while in developing nations provisions for training and research are on the increase.  相似文献

ABSTRACT Student Chapters of The Wildlife Society serve the parent organization as a source of new members while promoting professional development among aspiring wildlife biologists. However, little is known about the operation of the Student Chapters across North America. I conducted an online survey between March and May 2006 to learn about variation among chapters and to define successful chapters with a quantifiable, objective parameter (e.g., the active members or budgets). I sent chapter advisors and student officers the online survey via e-mail. Of 92 Student Chapters known to the parent Society in 2005, 66 active and one inactive chapters responded. Activities, sizes, and budgets varied greatly among chapters. Additionally, perceived values of membership by survey participants matched the parent Society's goals. No clear definition of a successful chapter (e.g., those with the most money or members) emerged, but chapters faced some evident problems including apathy from students and advisors as well as a lack of support from the parent Society. Based upon the survey, I recommend Student Chapters have strong projects and activities as well as consider collaborating with other professional organizations. I recommend the parent Society continue to expand student programs and incorporate students into the Society.  相似文献

British biology is multiply divided between 115 national societies and 900 local ones, as well as divisions between amateurs and professionals, pure and applied, universities and research institutes. It is in fact composed of four strands, three of them (natural history, scientific biology and preservation/conservation) having arisen independently, and all having given rise to the fourth (international) strand. Natural history declined at the end of the nineteenth century with the growth of professional biology, government funding, and new techniques imported from abroad; it has recovered spectacularly since the 1939–45 war. Scientific biology grew mainly from continental science, and came of age as a professional discipline around 1900. Concern for conservation has risen as human pressures on the environment have increased.
The question asked is whether this serendipitous structure is the most efficient one, in a time when the conditions which gave rise to much of it have changed: personal motivation, the role of scientific meetings, ease of travel, accessibility of libraries, sources of funding, etc. The trends have always been to split, and virtually all attempts at co-ordination have failed. This process leads to long-term inefficiency, and for scientific, political and personal advantage, the future will almost inevitably require some foci for biologists beyond narrow subject societies. The Linnean Society is peculiarly fitted to become an active focus, perhaps catalysing an amalgamation or federal sybiosis along the lines of the Royal Society of Chemistry.  相似文献

Scientific progress runs on the intellect, curiosity, and passion of its practitioners fueled by the research dollars of its sponsors. The concern over research funding in biology in general and genetics in particular led us to survey the membership of the Genetics Society of America for information about the federal support of genetics at the level of individual principal investigators. The results paint a mosaic of circumstances—some good, others not so good—that describes some of our present challenges with sufficient detail to suggest useful steps that could address the challenges.  相似文献

Since 1999, SPVS has been involved in three projects that combine two fundamental goals over the course of 40 years: the conservation of one of Brazil's most important remnants of Atlantic Forest and the implementation of projects for carbon sequestration. In addition, there is an interest in replicating these projects in order to restore other degraded areas, protect the Brazilian biomes, and help to diminish deforestation and forest fire, therefore reducing carbon emissions. The acquisition of 19,000 ha of degraded areas of high biological importance in southern Brazil was the first step towards the implementation of the projects. These areas are owned by SPVS, a Brazilian NGO, and are being restored, conserved and transformed into Private Natural Reserves, in partnership with the NGO – The Nature Conservancy, and financed by the companies – American Electric Power, General Motors and Chevron Texaco. The process of forest restoration involves several stages: soil studies, surveying the region's native plants, planning for restoration by means of a Geographical Information System, production of seedlings, application of different techniques for planting (such as manual or mechanised planting with seedlings and stakes), and biomass and biodiversity monitoring. To guarantee the survival of the seedlings on the planted areas, during the first three years, there is a continuous and systematic maintenance programme including weeding of undergrowth, crowing and organic fertilisation. The three projects already planted around 500,000 seedlings of native species until September 2004, and aim to plant a further 300,000 until 2008.  相似文献

摘要 目的:探究孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄的超声诊断参数分析,并就超声诊断参数对孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄的影响因素开展分析。方法:选择2020年7月至2021年7月于我院就诊后被确诊为孕中晚期主动脉弓狭窄的40例胎儿为狭窄组,另取同期体格检查正常的40例胎儿为对照组,以胎儿出生后超声心动图检测或尸检结果为金标准,比较两组胎儿超声指标Z-分数(AI Z-score)、升主动脉Z-分数(AO Z-score)、主动脉峡部/升主动脉(AI/AO)差异,分别绘制AI Z-score、AO Z-score以及AI/AO对孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄的诊断ROC曲线,并计算其曲线下面积(AUC),最后采用Logistic回归分析的方式计算孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄影响因素。结果:(1)窄缩组胎儿的超声参数AI Z-score、AO Z-score以及AI/AO均明显低于对照组(P<0.05);(2)AI/AO为孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄的危险因素(P<0.05);(3)AI Z-score、AO Z-score、AI/AO以及联合检测对胎儿主动脉弓狭窄的诊断AUC分别为0.801(95% CI=0.691-0.910,P<0.001)、0.835(95% CI=0.739-0.932,P<0.001)、0.843(95% CI=0.757-0.929,P<0.001)、0.920(95% CI=0.865-0.975,P<0.001),截断值分别为-1.64、-1.47和0.535,诊断灵敏度和特异度分别为72.50%和72.50%、77.50%和77.50%、75.00%和80.00%、85.00%和82.50%。结论:超声诊断对孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄具有较好的诊断价值,其指标AI Z-score、AO Z-score、AI/AO能够量化分析孕中晚期胎儿主动脉弓狭窄风险,可以考虑将其应用于临床中。  相似文献
