The responses of the cortical secondary auditory area (AII) to the non-acoustic stimuli (electrical stimulation of the skin in the vibrissae area and light flash) and their combination with acoustic stimulation (sound click or tone) were studied in experiments on cats anesthetized by kalipsol using extra- and intracellular recording. Of the total number of neurons, 69% of the units generating spike responses to the acoustic stimulation responded to the non-acoustic stimulation too. The responses to the modal-nonspecific stimulation, as a rule, were weak and variable; they were mostly represented by a tonic change in the neuronal discharge frequency. The nonspecific stimulation evoked primary excitatory and inhibitory postsynaptic potentials in 77% and 20% of the examined neurons, respectively. We found that synaptic effects of the nonspecific and specific stimulations interact with each other, ensuring considerable modulation of the latter (mostly a significant facilitation resulting from the EPSP summation and suppression of an inhibitory component of the response to acoustic stimulation). Possible participation of the midbrain reticular formation in the transmission of the modal-nonspecific influences to the cortical neurons is considered; stimulation of this structure evoked responses similar to those evoked by the modal-nonspecific sensory stimuli.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophhysiology, Vol. 26, No. 5, pp. 356–364, September–October, 1994.  相似文献

Extra- and intracellular responses of 128 neurons to paired stimulation of the infraorbital nerve and vibrissae, recorded in the projection zone of the vibrissae in cortical area SI, were studied in adult cats immobilized with tubocurarine. Conditioning stimulation completely suppressed the ability of different neurons to respond for periods of between 10 and 120 msec. The duration of the period of total suppression of test responses was shown to depend on the location of the stimulated vibrissa in the peripheral receptive field of the neurons studied. Excitatory and inhibitory responses of maximal intensity arose in the neurons to stimulation of receptive field centers. The functional role of the decrease in intensity of excitatory responses during stimulation of vibrissae located at different distances from centers of the receptive fields of cortical neurons is discussed.A. Unit activity in cortical areas 24 and 32 was studied during conditioned placing reflex formation in cats. Neuronal responses in the limbic cortex of trained animals correlated with acoustic stimulation, the motor response, and also with the presentation of food reinforcement. In untrained animals 16% of neurons responded to acoustic stimulation. After training the number of neurons responding to sound in area 32 increased to 51.3%. Of the total number of neurons, 34.6% responded by initial excitation and 26.7% by inhibition of spike activity. The latent period of these responses was about 50 msec and their duration up to 200 msec. Similar but weaker responses were observed in area 24. Short-latency activation responses to conditioned and differential stimulation were similar in character. It is suggested that after training processes taking place in the limbic cortex may contribute to better perception of both conditioned and differential acoustic stimuli, irrespective of their functional significance.A. Responses of caudate neurons to two kinds of visual stimuli, namely diffuse light and a more local stimulus (a slit of light), oriented in different directions on a screen, were studied in alert cats during natural fixation of the gaze. The number of neurons which responded to local stimulation was several times greater than the number responding to diffuse light. Besides on-responses to local stimulation, a more distinct phase of inhibition of activity during presentation of the stimulus and off-responses also appeared. The latent periods of responses to both kinds of stimulation were commensurate at 40–90 msec for most neurons. Differences in neuronal responses also were found on a change in orientation of the slit. The results are discussed from the standpoint of participation of the caudate nucleus in visual information analysis.  相似文献

Unit activity was studied in areas 3 and 4 during the conditioned placing reflex in cats. Responses of somatic cortical neurons in this case were shown to develop comparatively late — 80–100 or, more often, 200–450 msec after the conditioned stimulus. In the motor cortex responses preceded movement by 50–550 msec, whereas in the somatosensory cortex they usually began simultaneously with or after the beginning of the movement. Judging from responses of somatic cortical neurons, the placing reflex is realized by the same neuronal mechanism as the corresponding voluntary movement. The differential stimulus and positive conditioned stimulus, after extinction of the conditioned placing reflex, evoked short-latency spike responses lasting 250–350 msec in the same neurons as took part in the reflex itself. In these types of internal inhibition, responses of the neurons were thus initially excitatory in character. Participation of the neurons in the conditioned placing reflex and its extinction, disinhibition, and differentiation, is the result of a change in the time course of excitatory processes and is evidently connected with differential changes in the efficiency of the various synaptic inputs of the neuron.A. Unit responses in the second somatosensory cortical projection area (SII) to clicks and electric shocks applied to the contralateral limb were investigated in chronic experiments on cats. In response to specific stimulation for the cortical region studied the discharge frequency of 75% of neurons increased, spontaneous activity of 18% was reduced in frequency or the discharges ceased altogether, and 25% of cells did not respond. In response to "nonspecific" stimulation (clicks) 30% of neurons were activated; the discharge of 25% of cells was inhibited and 45% did not respond. The results of investigation of intersensory convergence of stimuli from different sensory systems showed that a high proportion (55%) of SII neurons give bimodal responses. Another 18% of neurons give a specific response to both adequate and inadequate stimulation. It is suggested that the presence of polysensory convergence of SII neurons and of short pathways for the conduction of sensory information, and also the ability of neurons to acquire polysensory properties during stimulus presentation are evidence of the important role of this cortical region in conditioning.A. The responses of 129 bulbospinal (BS) neurons were investigated an anesthetized cats during the expiration reflex evoked by mechanical stimulation of the vocal folds or electrostimulation of the superior laryngeal nerve. It was found that in addition to expiratory and inspiratory neurons, a large number of nonrespiratory BS cells localized bilaterially, primarily in the giant-cell tegmental fields, are activated. It is shown that expulsive expiration during this reflex is to a considerable extent provided by activation of non-respiratory BS neurons participating also in the transmission of descending influences from high-threshold afferents of other modalities.A. The functional properties of fibers transmitting auditory impulses to somatosensory areas SI and SII were studied in anesthetized and waking animals by the evoked potentials method. The thresholds of evoked potentials in areas SI and SII are 15–35 dB higher than those of evoked potentials in the auditory projection areas. Tonotopical localization is absent in somatic areas. Experiments on anesthetized animals showed that the spread of impulses relating to acoustic stimuli of different frequencies into areas SI and SII is effected through area AI and its connections with the above zones. Another pathway probably also participates in the conduction of impulses from clicks. Analysis of the time constants of the first positive potential suggested that the interneuronal organization of auditory projections to area AI is less complex than that of projections to the somatosensory areas. Comparison of amplitudes of evoked potentials of different projection zones in area SI showed that the projection of the head receives more auditory impulses than the projection zone of the forelimbs, confirming the morphological data published previously.  相似文献

Responses of 375 primary somatosensory cortical neurons located in the projection area of the vibrissae to electrical stimulation of the infraorbital nerve and also to adequate stimulation of the vibrissae were investigated in unanesthetized cats immobilized with tubocurarine. Stimulation of the nerve and vibrissae most frequently evoked synaptic responses in the neurons, in the form of a short EPSP followed by an IPSP or, less frequently, as a primary IPSP; during extracellular recordings corresponding changes were observed in spike activity. In response to stimulation of the vibrissae, initial inhibition was found more often than to stimulation of the nerve (in 45 and 16% of neurons respectively). The difference between the minimal values of latent periods of IPSP and EPSP evoked by stimulation of the infraorbital nerve was 0.8 msec in different neurons, and the difference between the mean values 1.4 msec. Directional sensitivity of the cortical neurons was demonstrated (to a change in the direction of deflection of the vibrissae). Neurons located close together could differ in the character of their directional sensitivity during stimulation of the same vibrissae. It is concluded that short-latency inhibition arising in the primary projection area of the cat somatosensory cortex is predominantly afferent and not recurrent. The probable mechanisms of directional sensitivity of the neurons studied are discussed.A. A. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSSR, Kiev. Responses of 141 neurons of the caudate nucleus to acoustic stimuli — tones (500 and 2000 Hz) and clicks of different frequency (0.2 and 0.8/sec) and intensity (75, 80, 95 dB) — were recorded extracellularly in chronic experiments on cats. The responses recorded showed great variability with respect to character (phasic, tonic), structure (one or two phases of excitation), latent periods (from 7.5 to 300.0 msec), and burst discharge frequency (from 90 to 800 spikes/sec). Analysis of averaged poststimulus histograms and graphs of the dynamics of the responses showed that responses of 74% of neurons were much better expressed if less frequent stimuli were used: The regularity of the responses and the number of spikes in each response increased. Responses of neurons also increased and acquired a more distinct temporal structure if the intensity of the clicks increased. The character of responses to clicks and tones differed qualitatively in 17% of neurons studied: Phasic excitation arose in response to clicks, tonic changes in spike activity to tones. The particular features of responses of caudate neurons to acoustic stimulation with different parameters are discussed.A. A. On-responses of primary visual cortical neurons to local photic stimulation of the receptive field center by stimuli of scotopic and mesopic ranges of intensity were investigated in dark-adapted curarized cats. Only phasic excitation (type I) was observed in 16% of cells studied, phasic and prolonged excitation with phasic inhibition between them (type II) was observed in 68%, and prolonged inhibition (type III) alone in 16% of cells. The thresholds of phasic excitation in the neuronal responses lay between 0.7 and 2200 trolands (td) and coincided with thresholds of activation of the cone system, whereas thresholds of prolonged excitation lay within the range 0.02–9 td and coincided with thresholds of rod inputs. Inhibitory effects were manifested as phasic inhibition observed on peristimulus histograms, disturbances of the monotony of the responses versus stimulus intensity curve, and also as prolonged inhibition in on-responses. All inhibitory effects were observed in the mesopic range of intensities (0.7–2200 td) and were connected with functioning of the cones.Institute of Higher Nervous Activity and Neurophysiology, Academy of Sciences of the USSR, Moscow. The evoked potential (EP) and the pulse activity of single auditory cortex neurons were recorded simultaneously in response to a click and to a tone for cats under nembutal and nembutal — chloralose anesthesia. Both extra- and intracellular taps were employed. The experiments showed that the reaction of auditory cortex neurons in response to a click lasts from 200 to 300 msec. It consists of pulse discharges from several groups of neurons. Out of 174 neurons observed 8 responded within 4 to 7 msec after a click (before the EP). One hundred and nine neurons reacted in the range from 7 to 25 msec which coincided with the initial electropositivity of the EP; 11 neurons were in the range from 40 to 100 msec and 4 were between 180 and 270 msec. Such a sequence of involvement of different neuron groups in the reaction is probably accounted for to a large extent by the time dispersion of the afferent volley. With an intracellular tap slow alterations of membrane potential were observed in the form of an EPSP with pulses together with subsequent hyperpolarization lasting 50 to 70 msec and slowly increasing depolarization that reached a maximum after 170 to 200 msec.A. Activity in 62 caudate nucleus neurons produced during presentation of visual stimuli was recorded during experiments on awake cats. Response of a sensory pattern, associated with a photic stimulus falling within a certain section of the visual field was observed in 52% of the neurons tested as against only 11% manifesting motor response related to eye movement guided towards a target. About a quarter of the cells responded to biologically significant stimuli, producing a nonspecific response, i.e., not specifically related to the nature of the visual stimuli presented. Several different response patterns could be recorded from a single unit. A hypothesis that more than one parallel pathway for afferent visual inferences on the caudate nucleus may exist is presented on the basis of findings from this research.A. A. The responses by neurons in various layers of the pigeon's optic tectum to visual stimuli of different sizes moving at various speeds in receptive fields (RF's) were recorded by means of microelectrodes. Analysis of the relationship between the characteristics of the RF's and the location of neurons in the optic tectum showed that with increase in the depth of the layer the structure of the RF's became more complex, their size increased, the effect of peripheral inhibition decreased, and the properties of directional selectivity were displayed more clearly. A wide convergence of signals of different modalities on the efferent neurons of the optic tectum, and their rapid habituation to repeated application of stimuli, were observed.M. V. The characteristics of extra- and intracellular responses of neurons in the AI region were studied in experiments with unanesthetized cats. It was established that auditory cortex neurons with similar best frequencies showed different forms of responses to tones of the corresponding frequency. About 40% of the auditory cortex neurons generated on responses to tone presentation. On — off and off responses were found in 27% of the neurons. Cortical neurons (27%) in which stimulation or inhibition of impulse discharge persisted throughout tone action were assigned to the tonic type group of cells. Approximately 6% of neurons in the AI region did not respond to a tone. During intracellular recording about 85% of the neurons responded to the turning on and/or off of a tone by generating an action potential followed by an IPSI. In 96% of the cortical neurons studied the IPSPs were a constant component of the intracellular responses to a tone. It is concluded that the inhibition of the impulse activity of the given neurons is of primarily a postsynaptic origin. Neurons showing one or another form of response differ from one another in the relative intensity and time characteristics of excitatory and inhibitory processes interacting on their postsynaptic membranes. In neurons of the phasic type inhibitory processes are dominant over excitatory, while excitatory processes are predominant in neurons of the tonic type.A. A. Spontaneous and evoked unit activity in response to repeated application of clicks at a frequency of 0.3–2.0 Hz in the caudate nucleus was studied by an extracellular recording technique in chronic experiments on cats. Four types of spontaneous unit activity in the caudate nucleus were distinguished. Altogether 44% of neurons tested responded by changes in spontaneous activity to clicks. Five types of responses of caudate neurons to clicks were discovered: phasic excitation, phasic inhibition, tonic activation, tonic inhibition, and mixed tonic responses; the commonest type was tonic activation. During prolonged stimulation by clicks extinction of the phasic responses was not observed. Complete or partial extinction of tonic responses in the course of frequent repetition of stimulation was observed in 33% of responding neurons. The question of possible convergence of specific and nonspecific influences on caudate neurons is discussed.A. A. Bogomolets Institute of Physiology, Academy of Sciences of the Ukrainian SSR, Kiev. Extra- and intracellular responses of neurons in the primary somatosensory cortex to repetitive mechanical stimulation of the vibrissae at different frequencies were studied in unanesthetized curarized adult cats. Unlike responses to electrical stimulation of the combined afferent input (the infraorbital nerve) spike discharges of neurons in response to vibrissal stimulation can reproduce rather higher frequencies of stimulation and their initial character changes more often in the course of the repetitive series. Most cortical neurons were characterized by limitation of the area of their peripheral receptive fields with an increase in the frequency of adequate repetitive stimulation. A group of cortical neurons was distinguished by its ability to respond to high-frequency stimulation and to generate burst discharges. Comparison of the frequency characteristics of spike responses of these cells and of inhibitory synaptic action in other cortical neurons led to the conclusion that this group of cells thus distinguished may be inhibitory cortical neurons. The role of interaction between excitatory and inhibitory processes arising in cortical neurons during repetitive stimulation of different areas of their receptive fields is discussed.A. A. Activity of single neurons and mass evoked potentials (EP) were recorded from the auditory (area 41) and associative (area 39) cortices in acute experiments on rats anesthetized with urethane, nembutal, or chloralose; pure tones were used as acoustic stimuli. The EP appearing in response to a wide range of sound tones on the surface of the auditory and associative cortices were dissimilar in their latency and shape. For neurons exhibiting stable responses, the frequency-threshold curves (FTC) were plotted.Weak and variable responses of neurons were observed under slight urethane anesthesia. Nembutal anesthesia increased the responsiveness of neurons and the probability of appearing of late components in the responses. Chloralose anesthesia was characterized by extension of frequency range perceived by a neuron, while its sharpness of tuning remained unchanged. Under all types of anesthesia employed, the responses recorded from the associative cortex neurons had longer latencies than those recorded from the auditory cortex neurons. Neurons exhibiting the frequency selectivity were much less numerous in the associative cortex than in the auditory cortex. The former neurons were often characterized by intermittent FTC and they responded to a more extended frequency range. No clear tonotopic organization was found in the associative cortex.Neirofiziologiya/Neurophysiology, Vol. 25, No. 5, pp. 343–349, September–October, 1993.  相似文献
