The enhancement of internodal elongation in floating or deepwater rice (Oryza sativa L. cv. Habiganj Aman II) by treatment with ethylene or gibberellic acid (GA3) at high relative humidity (RH) is inhibited by abscisic acid (ABA). Here, we examined the interactive effects of ethylene, gibberellin (GA) and ABA at low RH on internodal elongation of deepwater rice stem segments. Although ethylene alone hardly promoted internodal elongation of stem sections at 30% RH, it enhanced the internodal elongation induced by GA3. Application of ABA alone to stem segments had no effect on internodal elongation. However, in the presence of ethylene and GA3 at 30% RH, ABA further promoted internodal elongation. This promotive effect of ABA was not found in the internodes of stem segments treated either with ethylene or with GA3 at 30% RH or in the internodes of stem segments treated with ethylene and/or GA3 at 100% RH.  相似文献

Internodal elongation in floating rice (Oryza sativa) is known to be enhanced by treatment with ethylene or gibberellic acid (GA3) at high relative humidity (RH). However, ethylene-induced internodal elongation is inhibited at low RH, while GA3-induced internodal elongation is hardly affected by humidity. We examined the effects of ethylene and GA3 on the rate of transpiration in stem segments incubated at 30% or 100% RH. Ethylene promoted the transpiration of stem segments at 30% RH, but not at 100% RH, while GA3 had little effect on transpiration at either 30% or 100% RH. We propose that the absence of ethylene-induced internodal elongation at low RH is due, at least in part, to ethylene-induced transpiration.  相似文献

We examined the effect of ethylene on the growth of rice seedlings (Oryza sativa L.) at various degrees of humidity. Ethylene significantly suppressed the growth of shoots when applied to seedlings grown under 30% relative humidity (RH), but promoted the growth of shoots when applied to seedlings grown under 100% RH. The application of gibberellic acid (GA3) promoted the elongation of shoots in seedlings grown under 30% and 100% RH. Ethylene inhibited the shoot elongation induced by GA3 at 30% RH, but enhanced the elongation induced by GA3 at 100% RH. These results indicate that ethylene can either promote or suppress the growth of rice shoots depending on ambient humidity, and that these actions of ethylene may be mediated through modulating the responsiveness of shoots to gibberellin.  相似文献

Internodal elongation in floating rice ( Oryza sativa L. cv. Habiganj Aman II) is known to be enhanced by treatment with ethylene or gibberellic acid (GA3) at high relative humidity (RH). However, ethylene-induced internodal elongation is inhibited at low RH. while GA3-induced internodal elongation is hardly affected by humidity. We examined the possible involvement of osmoregulation in the stimulation by GA3 of the elongation of internodes at low RH. Submergence and treatment with ethylene or GA33 at 100% RH increased the osmotic potential in internodes of excised stem segments, while GA3 at 20% RH maintained the osmotic potential at a low level. In internodes of stem segments that had been treated with GA3 at 20% RH, the activity of invertase and the level of soluble sugars were almost 2- and 1.5-fold higher, respectively, than those in internodes that had been treated with GA3 at 100% RH. These results indicate that one of the possible mechanisms by which GA3 promotes elongation of internodes at low RH involves the osmoregulation that is achieved by promotion of the synthesis of invertase.  相似文献

Ethylene Binding and Action in Rice Seedlings   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The existence of at least two saturable, high affinity bindingsites for ethylene is demonstrated in rice seedlings. We investigated the effect of partial submergence on internode elongation in a Bangladesh variety of floating or deep water rice (Oryza sativa L., cv. Habiganj Aman II). In plants which were at least 21 days old, 7 days of submergence led to a 3- to 5-fold increase in internodal length. During submergence, the ethylene concentration in the internodes increased from about 0.02 to 1 microliters per liter. Treatment of nonsubmerged plants with ethylene also stimulated internode elongation. When ethylene synthesis in partially submerged plants was blocked with aminooxyacetic acid and aminoethoxyvinylglycine, internode elongation was inhibited. This growth inhibition was reversed when ethylene biosynthesis was restored with 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC). Radio-labeling studies showed that ethylene in floating rice was synthesized from methionine via ACC. Internodal tissue from submerged plants had a much higher capacity to form ethylene than did internodal tissue from nonsubmerged plants. This increase in ethylene synthesis appeared to be due to enhanced ACC formation rather than to increased conversion of ACC to ethylene. Our results indicate that ethylene produced during submergence is required for the stimulation of growth in submerged floating rice plants.  相似文献

Submergence induces rapid elongation of internodes in floating rice(Oryza sativa L. cv. Habiganj Aman II). The initial signalfor such internodal elongation has been considered to be the reduced partialpressure of oxygen in submerged internodal cavities, which promotes theelongation of internodes through the enhancement of ethylene synthesis. Weexamined the relationship between low oxygen pressure and ethylene production inthe rapid elongation of floating rice internodes using ethylene biosynthesisinhibitors, aminooxyacetic acid (AOA) and CoCl2. When floating ricestem segments were incubated in an atmosphere of low O2, internodalelongation accelerated and ethylene production increased. However, in stemsegments treated with AOA or CoCl2, low O2 stillstimulated the elongation of internodes although the ethylene production by theinternodes was less than by those in control stem segments where internodalelongation was not promoted. These results indicate that low O2 iscapable of causing rapid elongation of internodes of floating rice independentlyof enhanced production of ethylene. In addition to low O2,submergence, ethylene and gibberellic acid each enhanced the production ofethylene by internodal tissues, suggesting that enhanced ethylene production isa common phenomenon accompanied by the acceleration of internodal elongation infloating rice.  相似文献

We have shown previously that ethylene, which accumulates in the air spaces of submerged stem sections of rice (Oryza sativa L. cv “Habiganj Aman II”), is involved in regulating the growth response caused by submergence. The role of gibberellins in the submergence response was studied using tetcyclacis (TCY), a new plant growth retardant, which inhibits gibberellin biosynthesis. Stem sections excised from plants that had been watered with a solution of 1 micromolar TCY for 7 to 10 days did not elongate when submerged in the same solution or when exposed to 1 microliter per liter ethylene in air. Gibberellic acid (GA3) at 0.3 micromolar overcame the effect of TCY and restored the rapid internodal elongation in submerged and ethylene-treated sections to the levels observed in control sections that had not been treated with TCY. The effect of 0.01 to 0.2 micromolar GA3 on internodal elongation was enhanced two- to eight-fold when 1 microliter per liter ethylene was added to the air passing through the chamber in which the sections were incubated. GA3 and ethylene caused a similar increase in cell division and cell elongation in rice internodes. Thus, ethylene may cause internodal elongation in rice by increasing the activity of endogenous GAs. In internodes from which the leaf sheath had been peeled off, growth in response to submergence, ethylene and GA3 was severely inhibited by light.  相似文献

Ethylene and the growth of rice seedlings   总被引:8,自引:2,他引:6       下载免费PDF全文
Etiolated whole rice seedlings enclosed in sealed vials produced ethylene at a rate of 0.9 picomole per hour per seedling. When 2-centimeter-long shoots were subdivided into 5-millimeter-long sections, the sections containing the tip of the shoot evolved 37% of the total ethylene with the remaining 63% being produced along a gradient decreasing to the base of the shoot. The tip of the coleoptile also had the highest level of the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid and of the ethylene-forming enzyme activity. Ethylene is one of the factors controlling coleoptile elongation. Decapitation of the seedling reduced ethylene evolution to one-third its original level and inhibited coleoptile growth. In short-term experiments, the growth rate of decapitated seedlings was restored to almost that of intact seedlings by application of ethylene at a concentration of 10 microliters per liter. Apart from ethylene, O2 also participates in the control of coleoptile growth. When rice seedlings were grown in a gas mixture of N2 and O2, the length of the coleoptiles reached a maximum at a concentration of 2.5% O2. Lower and higher concentrations of O2 reduced coleoptile growth. The effect of exogenous ethylene on coleoptile growth was also O2 dependent.  相似文献

The cell walls in the elongating zone of submerged floating rice internodes show high susceptibility to expansins. When internode sections corresponding to such an elongation zone were incubated for 24 h under osmotic stress conditions produced by treatment with 100 mM polyethylene glycol 4000 (PEG), the cell wall susceptibility to expansins remained at its initial level, while the susceptibility of internode sections incubated under unstressed conditions decreased considerably during the same period. The contents of polysaccharides and phenolic acids as ferulic, diferulic and p-coumaric acids in the cell walls of internode sections increased substantially under unstressed conditions, but the increases were almost completely prevented by osmotic stress. Ferulic acid applied to internode sections under osmotic stress reduced the susceptibility of the cell walls to expansins and increased the levels of ferulic and diferulic acids in the cell walls, with little effect on the accumulation of polysaccharides. In contrast, applied p-coumaric acid increased the level of p-coumaric acid in the cell walls without a change in the levels of ferulic and diferulic acids but did not reduce the susceptibility to expansins. These results suggest that the deposition of ferulic and diferulic acids is a primary determinant in regulating the reduction of the susceptibility of cell walls to expansins in floating rice internodes.  相似文献

Ethylene and GA3 stimulated internodal elongation in the excisedstem sections of floating rice. The combined application ofethylene and GA3 exerted a cooperative effect on internodalelongation, although the effect was variety dependent. Stimulativeeffect of ethylene on internodal growth in intact floating riceplants was virtually absent when the plants were pre-treatedwith Ancymidol, -cyclopropyl--(4-methoxyphenyl)-5-pyrimidinemethanol, an inhibitor of gibberellin biosynthesis. Submergenceof intact plants, which also induced internodal elongation, had no stimulative effect when the plants were pre-treated withAncymidol. Submergence of intact plants increased the endogenousgibberellin level. The internode of young, intact 9 day oldseedlings responded neither to submergence nor ethylene, butwhen seedlings were pre-treated with GA3 they responded to eitherone. Nodal root development was also enhanced by either ethyleneor GA3. Combined application of ethylene and GA3 exerted a co-operativeeffect on nodal root development. Ancymidol-treated plants didnot produce nodal roots even though they were subjected to submergence, whereas nontreated control plants produced nodal roots normally. This study investigated whether and how the interaction between abscisic acid (ABA) and ethylene is involved in the regulation of rice (Oryza sativa L.) spikelet sterility when subjected to water stress during meiosis. Two rice cultivars, HA-3 (drought-resistant) and WY-7 (drought-susceptible), were used and subjected to well-watered and water-stressed (WS) treatments during meiosis (15–2 days before heading). Leaf water potentials of both cultivars markedly decreased during the day as a result of the WS treatment, but panicle water potentials remained constant. The percentage of sterile spikelets in WS plants was increased by 49.7% for WJ-7 but only 12.7% for HA-3. ABA, ethylene, and 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid were all enhanced in spikelets by the water stress, but ethylene was enhanced more than ABA in WY-7 when compared with that in HA-3. Spikelet sterility was significantly reduced when ABA or amino-ethoxyvinylglycine, an inhibitor of ethylene synthesis, was applied to the panicles of WS plants at the early meiosis stage. Application of ethephon, an ethylene-releasing agent, or fluridone, an inhibitor of ABA synthesis, had the opposite effect, and sterility was increased. The results suggest that antagonistic interactions between ABA and ethylene may be involved in mediating the effect of water stress on spikelet fertility. A higher ratio of ABA to ethylene would be a physiologic trait of rice adaptation to water stress.  相似文献

To address the issue of water eutrophication and to use water more effectively, we conducted experiments on rice (Oryza sativa L.) grown in floating culture. From 2009 to 2011, we compared the photosynthesis and root characteristics of the rice, hybrid line Zhuliangyou 02, grown under a conventional tillage and in a floating culture in Huaihua, the home of hybrid rice. Rice in the floating culture showed a higher net photosynthetic rate and stomatal conductance than that under the conventional tillage. The activities of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase and NADP-malic enzyme were 32 and 28% higher, respectively, in rice in the floating culture than under the conventional tillage. Rice in the floating culture also showed significantly greater number of roots, root activity, and antioxidant enzyme activity than that under the conventional tillage. Compared with rice under the conventional tillage, rice in the floating culture had 18 and 24% higher tiller number and effective panicle number, respectively. These results suggested that the floating culture system can promote rice production through enhancing root absorption, increasing effective panicle number, and improving the photosynthetic rate. In addition, rice cultivated in the floating culture could remove excess nutrients from water, which addresses the problems of a lack of arable land and water pollution.  相似文献

A rice blast controlling agent, isoprothiolane (diisopropyl 1,3-dithiolan-2-ylidenemalonate), stimulated the reduction of methionine sulfoxide to methionine by the rice plant. In the presence of isoprothiolane, the methionine/(methionine + its sulfoxide) ratio was increased to 129~208% of the control. The ethylene production by the plant was also enhanced by isoprothiolane, probably because methionine is an important precursor of ethylene. The non-parasitic damping-off caused by chilling stress on rice seedlings was effectively prevented with the application of isoprothiolane as well as ethephon, which easily decomposes to ethylene and acids. Therefore, the ethylene level modified by isoprothiolane and ethephon can contribute to their protective activity against the non-parasitic damping-off of rice seedlings. Indeed, a close relationship between the ethylene level and the protective activity against damping-off was obtained with isoprothiolane, but not with ethephon. Endogenous ethylene seems to be more effective in controlling the damping-off than exogenous ethylene from ethephon.  相似文献

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: The relationship between ethylene production and both seed dormancy and germination was investigated using red rice (weedy rice) as a model species. METHODS: Both fully dormant and after-ripened (non-dormant) naked caryopses were incubated with or without inhibitors of ethylene synthesis [aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG)] and perception [silver thiosulfate (STS)], or in the presence of the natural ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC). The kinetics of ethylene emissions were measured with a sensitive laser-photoacoustic system. KEY RESULTS: Dormant red rice caryopses did not produce ethylene. In non-dormant caryopses, ethylene evolution never preceded the first visible stage of germination (pericarp splitting), and ethylene inhibitors completely blocked ethylene production, but not pericarp splitting. Accordingly, endogenous ACC appeared to be lacking before pericarp splitting. However, early seedling growth (radicle or coleoptile attaining the length of 1 mm) followed ethylene evolution and was delayed by the inhibitors. Wounding the dormant caryopses induced them to germinate and produce ethylene, but their germination was slow and pericarp splitting could be speeded up by ethylene. CONCLUSIONS: The findings suggest that, in red rice, endogenous ethylene stimulates the growth of the nascent seedling, but does not affect seed dormancy or germination inception. Correspondingly, this phytohormone does not play a role in the dormancy breakage induced by wounding, but accelerates germination after such breakage has occurred.  相似文献

Ethylene production was measured during vegetative and reproductive development in normal tobacco plants and in transgenic tobacco plants carrying antisense genes for tomato ACC oxidase driven by the 35S CaMV promoter (Hamilton et al., 1990). When expressed in three independently derived transgenic plants, the antisense ethylene gene failed to affect ethylene production in young/mature leaves or in stems but it did inhibit ethylene production in roots by 37–58%. Ethylene production in developing flowers (i.e. from small unopened flower buds up until open flowers at anthesis) was not affected in transgenic plants but ethylene production in fruits was inhibited by 35%. The most dramatic effect on ethylene production in transgenic plants was seen immediately after wounding leaf tissue, in which case the antisense gene inhibited wound ethylene production by 72%. Thus, the antisense gene composed of a 35S CaMV promoter driving a heterologous ACC oxidase sequence had differential effects on ethylene production in tobacco plants.  相似文献

Twelve cultivars of rice (Oryza sativa L.), representing deepwater, short-statured, and semidwarf types, were tested for their response to submergence. The magnitude of the response varied between cultivars; however, all cultivars responded to submergence by rapid growth once internodal elongation had started. Three of these cultivars were tested for elongation capacity at four ages. The deepwater rice was capable of rapid internodal elongation in response to submergence at 4 weeks of age. Growth of the short-statured and semidwarf cultivars was not stimulated by submergence until about 10 weeks of age. In air, the internodes of deepwater rice grew slower than did those of the short-statured and semidwarf cultivars. We also investigated the elongation response of stem sections of all 12 cultivars to an atmosphere containing 3% O2, 6% CO2, 91% N2 (all by volume), and 1 microliter per liter ethylene. We found that the response of each of the non-deepwater cultivars was qualitatively and quantitatively similar to that of the deepwater rice.  相似文献

Water deficit and ethylene evolution by young cotton bolls   总被引:15,自引:7,他引:8       下载免费PDF全文
Guinn G 《Plant physiology》1976,57(3):403-405
Ethylene evolution and abscission of young cotton (Gossypium hirsutum L.) bolls were shown, in earlier papers, to increase when plants were subjected to conditions that decreased photosynthesis and sugar content of bolls (dim light, long warm nights). Moisture stress also increased ethylene evolution by young bolls, but it did not decrease their concentrations of fructose, glucose, or sucrose. When detached bolls were incubated for 16 or 24 hours at high or low humidity, their rate of ethylene evolution increased markedly at low humidity and slightly at high humidity. These results suggest that water deficit stimulates ethylene evolution by young bolls directly through partial desiccation, but do not exclude the possibility of a stimulus from moisture-stressed plants. Although attached and detached bolls both lost only a small percentage of their water content, detached bolls lost more for a given rate of ethylene evolution than bolls on moisture-stressed plants. The increased rate of ethylene evolution by young cotton bolls on plants subjected to a water deficit is probably adequate, in many cases, to cause their abscission.  相似文献

The dual effects of auxin and ethylene on rice seminal root growth were investigated in this study. Low concentrations of exogenous indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) had no effect on rice seminal root growth, whereas higher concentrations (≥0.003 μM) were inhibitory. In contrast, low concentrations of the auxin action inhibitor p-chlorophenoxyisobutyric acid (PCIB), ranging from 0.5 to 50 μM, promoted rice seminal root growth, whereas high concentrations of PCIB (≥500 μM) and the polar auxin transport inhibitor 2,3,5-triiodobenzoic acid (TIBA) inhibited rice seminal root growth. These results suggest that endogenous auxin is required but supraoptimal for rapid growth of rice seminal roots. In addition, although rice seminal root growth was inhibited by the exogenous ethylene-releasing compound ethephon or the ethylene precursor 1-aminocyclopropane-1-carboxylic acid (ACC) as well as exogenous IAA, the 50% inhibition of growth (I50) caused by ethephon or ACC was weakened by certain concentrations of the ethylene action inhibitor Ag+ (0.016-0.4 μM). However, the I50 caused by exogenous IAA was strengthened by Ag+ or the ethylene biosynthetic inhibitor aminoethoxyvinylglycine (AVG) and weakened by certain concentrations of PCIB (0.5-50 μM). Together, the inhibitory mechanisms of auxin and ethylene on rice seminal root growth should be different, and auxin inhibition of rice seminal root growth should not be caused by ethylene. Furthermore, our results indicated that a certain threshold level of ethylene was required to maintain rice seminal root growth, and that ethylene within the threshold may antagonize auxin inhibition of rice seminal root growth.  相似文献

An investigation determined the effects of environmental moisture content or water activity (Aw), exposure humidity, and sterilant concentration on the resistance of microbial spores. Decimal reduction values [expressed as D values at 54.4 C-specified concentration (milligrams per liter) of ethylene oxide] were determined from spore destruction curves of Bacillus subtilis var. niger dried on hygroscopic and nonhygroscopic surfaces. Four groups of spore preparations were preconditioned in one of four Aw environments (<0.1, 0.1, 0.5, 0.95) for 2 weeks or longer and were exposed to 500 mg of ethylene oxide per liter at 54.4 +/- 3 C and 10, 50, and 95% relative humidity in a specially designed thermochemical death rate apparatus. A fifth group did not receive any preconditioning treatment and was exposed immediately after preparation, in the same apparatus at the same temperature, to ethylene oxide concentrations of 200, 400, 600, 800, and 1,200 mg/liter and relative humidities of 15, 30, 50, 60, and 90%. The resistance of the spores on both types of surfaces to ethylene oxide increased proportionately with the Aw of the conditioning environment. The study also showed that moisture in the exposure system was not as critical a variable as the ethylene oxide concentration. The spore destruction rates, irrespective of the carrier types at all concentrations and at different humidities, varied little from one another. The decimal reduction values were reduced as the ethylene oxide concentration increased, and no optimal exposure humidity concentration was observed.  相似文献
