A novel hypothesis uniting Acipenser stellatus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus as sister groups has recently been proposed based on analysis of DNA sequences. In this paper I compare specimens of A. stellatus and P. kaufmanni, and show that they share several putatively derived similarities in the structure of their skulls, including: the presence of large spines on the dermal bones of skull; lateral extrascapular bones that enclose the confluence of the posttemporal, supratemporal, and otic sensory canals; elongate dorsal rostral bones; border rostral bones distinct in shape from dorsal rostral bones; greatly enlarged jugal that lacks a median flange; rostral canal bones that loop posteriorly at the anterior commissure of the rostral sensory canals; and the presence of an elongate, flat, and broad posterior ventral rostral bone. These similarities support a close relationship between A. stellatus and Pseudoscaphirhynchus, but still remain to be critically tested.  相似文献

Extant members of Acipenseridae are generally classified in four genera: Scaphirhynchus, Pseudoscaphirhynchus, Huso and “Acipenser,” which is widely recognized to be paraphyletic. Advances have been made in understanding the systematic relationships among sturgeons based on both morphological and molecular data. Analysis of mitochondrial DNA data suggested that Pseudoscaphirhynchus should be regarded as nested within “Acipenser,” specifically as sister group to the Stellate Sturgeon, A. stellatus. Recent morphological analyses also recovered this relationship, supported by a number of osteological synapomorphies, although these results were based on few and relatively small individuals. Here we describe the anatomy of the skull of A. stellatus based on newly prepared specimens of adult individuals, as well as examination of a large number of preserved individuals representing a broad range of ontogenetic stages. We present new anatomical data from all regions of the skull (dermatocranium, neurocranium, viscerocranium) and offer interpretations of these and other characters. In particular, we describe the allometry in the snout of A. stellatus, which undergoes substantial elongation relative to other sturgeons. Aspects of the skull of A. stellatus are compared to other members of the family, specifically the course of the occipital sensory canal and the morphology and distribution of cranial spines.  相似文献

The presence of a synsacrum formed by the fusion of vertebrae that come into closed contact with the ilium and ischium is a feature that characterizes the clade Xenarthra. Nevertheless, the proper identity of each vertebral element that forms it is a matter of discussion. In this article, we provide ontogenetic information about skeletal ossification of the xenarthran synsacrum and define the position of the sacrocaudal limit within it. We analyzed the synsacrum of 25 specimens of nonadult and 101 adult armadillos and anteaters: Dasypus hybridus, D. novemcinctus, Chaetophractus vellerosus, C. villosus, Tamandua tetradactyla, and Myrmecophaga tridactyla. Two sets of vertebrae were identified: an anterior set, often attached to the iliac bones, in which transverse processes are originated mainly from an expansion of the base of the neural arches, and secondarily from a lateroventral ossification center. A posterior set is characterized by a series of vertebrae along which extra lateral ossifications (described here for the first time) are developed and form exclusively the transverse processes. Among armadillos, the sacrocaudal limit is set between the last vertebrae attached to the iliac bones and the first vertebrae that form the dorsal border of the sacroischial fenestra. In addition, anterior free caudals also showed extra lateral ossifications forming exclusively the transverse processes, supporting the notion that more posterior synsacrals are in fact caudal vertebrae that were incorporated to the synsacrum. In pilosans, the sacrocaudal limit is set between the first vertebrae that come into contact with the ischial bones and the immediately anterior one. However, the pattern of homologies is obscured by the low resolution in the ontogenetic sequence when compared to that of armadillos. J. Hongeo gen. nov. is proposed following examinations of several individuals, including adult males, of the type species Raja koreana, previously described from a single adult female specimen from the southern coast of the Korean Peninsula. A number of external (including claspers, squamation, and ampullary and lateral line canal systems) and skeletal characters are newly described. The phylogenetic position of R. koreana among 26 nominal rajid supraspecific taxa plus 2 unnamed supraspecific taxa of Rajidae and 3 outgroups was estimated. According to a strict consensus tree of 20 equally parsimonious trees of 139 steps (CI = 0.626; RI = 0.850; RC = 0.532; HI = 0.374), Hongeo gen. nov. is defined by the two derived character states: rostral cartilage continuous with neurocranium and stout proximally, but very slender and uncalcified distally; and anterior fontanelle broad, extending forward onto the basal part of rostral cartilage slightly beyond the leading edge of nasal capsules. The new genus also differs from all other supraspecific taxa of Rajidae in the following combination of characters: dorsal surface of tail with a row of distinct thorns along midline in both sexes; most thorns directed anteriorly; a pair of longitudinally elongated black blotches having undulated contours on middle of dorsal surface of disc; three groups of outer buccal ampullae and tubules; three groups of nasal ampullae and tubules; hyoidean ampullae and tubules on ventral surface posteriorly extending past cloaca; rostral shaft narrow with filamentous cartilage at base; scapulocoracoid comparatively short and high with dorsoventrally elliptical anterior fenestra and expanded postventral fenestra; external margin of mesopterygium of pectoral fin slightly undulated, not sinuous, and not fused with pectoral radials; and clasper component eperon and pent present.  相似文献

The Comparative anatomy of the 11 recognized genera within Torpediniformes is described, systematically categorized, and illustrated in a comprehensive photo‐atlas. Data are compiled into a character matrix and cladistically analyzed using parsimony to test hypotheses about the previously recognized subfamilies, while reconstructing the possible evolutionary history of Torpediniformes. Results are consistent with the previous rank‐based classifications, regardless of the parsimony criteria used to generate the phylogenetic hypothesis, with one notable exception: a monophyletic Narcininae was never recovered. Torpedinoidea (=Hypnos + Torpedo) is supported by the presence of long, slender, flexible jaw cartilages, absence of a large rostral fontanelle, presence of suprascapular antimeres that are each shorter than the scapular process of the scapulocoracoid, antorbital cartilages that articulate on the anterior aspect of the nasal capsules and absence of a frontoparietal fontanelle. Subfamilial names Hypninae and Torpedininae are redundant with the genus names Hypnos and Torpedo and are not adopted here. Narcinoidea (=nontorpedinoid torpediniforms) is supported by unambiguous character transformations to the presence of a divided lower lip, labial cartilages, laterolingually compressed palatoquadrates, bifurcated antorbital cartilages, a rostral fontanelle, ventrally projecting nasal capsules, a dorsal rim of the synarcual mouth posterior to occipital condyle, posteriorly positioned lateral stays, and obtuse anterior margins of lateral stays. Narkidae is supported by unambiguous character transformations to the presence of an uncovered eye that protrudes above dorsal surface, a shared rim between the spiracle and the eye, an anterior nasal turret that projects ventrally, a nasal curtain that covers the upper lip and dentition when the mouth is closed, tab‐like prepelvic processes, a mesopterygium that is shorter than propterygium but longer than metapterygium, a slender median rostral cartilage, and a basibranchial cartilage with an anterior margin that is depressed medially and a posterior margin that tapers. Cytoarchitectonics of the dorsal part of diencephalon and epithalamus was studied in four species of the true sturgeons: the great sturgeon Huso huso L., the Kura sturgeon Acipenser gƅlden-st∂dtii persicus n. Kurensis Belyaeff, the starred sturgeon Ac. stellatus Pall., and the barbel sturgeon Ac. nudiventris Lov. Material was processed using routine Nissl and Bielschowski staining techniques (the latter in Viktorov’s modification). The described areas are the smallest among diencephalic regions. Dorsal thalamus is exceeded by the ventral one both in length and in the number nuclear structures. It includes four nuclear structures, three of which are periventricular: the anterior, posterior dorsal, and central nuclei, while the subhabenular nucleus is a migrated one. Epithalamic area has a pronounced right-left asymmetry that consists both in the external appearance of these structures and in their internal organization. Three types of neurons were revealed in epithalamic structures: granular cells, rounded neurons with poorly expressed processes, and bipolar neurons with clearly seen processes. In the epithalamic area, a sufficiently large nervous structure designated as the central habenular nucleus consisting of relatively large rounded neurons was described. A conclusion is made about a unique organization the studied areas in the true sturgeons, which distinguishes them markedly among both other actinopterygian fish and the higher organized vertebrates.  相似文献

In this study, six candidate female-specific DNA sequences of octaploid Amur sturgeon (Acipenser schrenckii) were identified using comparative genomic approaches with high-throughput sequencing data. Their specificity was confirmed by traditional PCR. Two of these sex-specific sequences were also validated as female-specific in other eight sturgeon species and two hybrid sturgeons. The identified female-specific DNA fragments suggest that the family Acipenseridae has a ZZ/ZW sex-determining system. However, one of the two DNA sequences has been deleted in some sturgeons such as Sterlet sturgeon (Acipenser ruthenus), Beluga (Huso huso) and Kaluga (H. dauricus). The difference of sex-specific sequences among sturgeons indicates that there are different sex-specific regions among species of sturgeon. This study not only provided the sex-specific DNA sequences for management, conservation and studies of sex-determination mechanisms in sturgeons, but also confirmed the capability of the workflow to identify sex-specific DNA sequences in the polyploid species with complex genomes.  相似文献

The skeleton of the jaws and neurocranium of sturgeons (Acipenseridae) are connected only through the hyoid arch. This arrangement allows considerable protrusion and retraction of the jaws and is highly specialized among ray‐finned fishes (Actinopterygii). To better understand the unique morphology and the evolution of the jaw apparatus in Acipenseridae, we investigated the development of the muscles of the mandibular and hyoid arches of the Siberian sturgeon, Acipenser baerii. We used a combination of antibody staining and formalin‐induced fluorescence of tissues imaged with confocal microscopy and subsequent three‐dimensional reconstruction. These data were analyzed to address the identity of previously controversial and newly discovered muscle portions. Our results indicate that the anlagen of the muscles in A. baerii develop similarly to those of other actinopterygians, although they differ by not differentiating into distinct muscles. This is exemplified by the subpartitioning of the m. adductor mandibulae as well as the massive m. protractor hyomandibulae, for which we found a previously undescribed portion in each. The importance of paedomorphosis for the evolution of Acipenseriformes has been discussed before and our results indicate that the muscles of the mandibular and the hyoid may be another example for heterochronic evolution.  相似文献

Dipturus wuhanlingi, a new rajid species, is described from an immature male and female collected from the southern East China Sea and off Haimen, Shantou, in the South China Sea, respectively. The specimens conform to the genus Dipturus in having the combination of the following characters: a long rostral cartilage (length more than 60% of dorsal head length), greatly depressed and laterally expanded mesocondyle, and a total length greater than 55 cm when adult. Dipturus wuhanlingi is distinct from all other Dipturus species in the following combination of characters: a pair of scapular thorns, three or four nuchal thorns, an irregular row of lumbar thorns along the dorsal midline of the disc, a single row of tail thorns in both sexes, pores of ampullae of Lorenzini extending to just anterior to the pelvic girdle, anterior fenestra of scapulocoracoid strongly horizontally elliptical, mesocondyle located at about the middle between the procondyle and metacondyle, and three pairs of obturator foramina on the pelvic girdle.  相似文献

The Antarctic snailfish Paraliparis devriesi (Liparidae) is an epibenthic species, inhabiting depths of 500–650 m in McMurdo Sound. Liparids are the most speciose fish family in the Antarctic Region. We examine the gross morphology and histology of the sense organs and brain of P. devriesi and provide a phyletic perspective by comparing this morphology to that of four scorpaeniforms and of sympatric perciform notothenioids. The brain has numerous derived features, including well-developed olfactory lamellae with thick epithelia, large olfactory nerves and bulbs, and large telencephalic lobes. The retina contains only rods and exhibits a high convergence ratio (82:1). Optic nerves are small and nonpleated. The tectum is small. The corpus of the cerebellum is large, whereas the valvula is vestigial. The rhombencephalon and bulbospinal junction are extended and feature expanded vagal and spinal sensory lobes as well as hypertrophied dorsal horns and funiculi in the rostral spinal cord. The lower lobes of the pectoral fins have taste buds and expanded somatosensory innervation. Although the cephalic lateral line and anterior lateral line nerve are well developed, the trunk lateral line and posterior lateral line nerve are reduced. Near-field mechanoreception by trunk neuromasts may have been compromised by the watery, gelatinous subdermal extracellular matrix employed as a buoyancy mechanism. The expanded somatosensory input to the pectoral fin may compensate for the reduction in the trunk lateral line. The brains of P. devriesi and sympatric notothenioids share well-developed olfactory systems, an enlarged preoptic-hypophyseal axis, and subependymal expansions. Although the functional significance is unknown, the latter two features are correlated with habitation of the deep subzero waters of the Antarctic shelf. J. Erpetoichthys calabaricus has unusual cranio‐vertebral anatomy, with an occipital centrum forming a component part of the compound basiexoccipital bone, and a ‘free‐floating’ occipital neural arch that differs from accessory arches found in some teleosts. The occipital neural arch bears autapomorphic lateral projections that articulate with small rod‐like bones resembling the spatial relationship of parapophyses and ribs, a feature normally restricted to vertebral centra. Based on analyses of cleared and stained specimens, computed tomography and histology, it is hypothesized that the lateral projections and associated rod‐shaped bones are structures that share developmental homologies to the unique ‘dorsal ribs’ of Polypteridae.  相似文献

Abstract: Peloneustes philarchus is the most abundant pliosaurid from the Peterborough Member of the Oxford Clay Formation (Callovian) of the UK. It is a valid taxon possessing a unique character combination, including a single autapomorphy: the interdentary symphysis is raised dorsally on a narrow platform. Twenty‐one specimens can be positively referred to P. philarchus. However, other specimens previously referred to Peloneustes, from the Peterborough Member near Peterborough, and the lower Oxfordian strata of Marquise, northern France, represent distinct, unnamed taxa. The skull of P. philarchus is described in detail, including new information from an uncrushed, three‐dimensionally preserved specimen and a specimen with a well‐preserved palate. Well‐preserved material clearly indicates that P. philarchus lacked nasals, but possessed a lacrimal. A previously unrecognised ‘palpebral’ forms part of the dorsal orbit margin adjacent to the prefrontal. The number of maxillary (30–31) and dentary (36–44) alveoli, the number of dentary alveoli adjacent to the mandibular symphysis (13–15), the number of foramina on the frontal and jugal, the breadth of the parasphenoid, breadth of the anterior (narial) process of the palatine and the presence of a lappet of the angular that extends onto the posterodorsal surface of the retroarticular process vary among individuals but are not considered sufficient to justify the recognition of new taxa. The presence of an open palpebral–prefrontal suture, the size of the ventral midline tubercle of the basioccipital and the presence of an anterior interpterygoid vacuity seem to vary with body size.  相似文献

Lateral cortex is the most laterally placed of the four cortical areas in snakes. Earlier studies suggest that it is composed of several subdivisions but provide no information on their organization. This paper first investigates the structure of lateral cortex in boa constrictors (Constrictor constrictor), garter snakes (Thamnophis sirtalis), and banded water snakes (Natrix sipedon) using Nissl and Golgi preparations; and secondly examines the relation of main olfactory bulb projections to the subdivisions of lateral cortex using Fink-Heimer and electron microscopic preparations. Lateral cortex is divided on cytoarchitectonic grounds into two major parts called rostral and caudal lateral cortex. Each part is further divided into dorsal and ventral subdivisions so that lateral cortex has a total of four subdivisions: dorsal rostral lateral cortex (drL), ventral rostral lateral cortex (vrL), dorsal caudal lateral cortex (dcL) and ventral caudal lateral cortex (vcL). Systematic analyses of Golgi preparations indicate that the rostral and caudal parts each contain distinct populations of neurons. Rostral lateral cortex contains bowl cells whose dendrites arborize widely in the outer cortical layer (layer 1). The axons of some bowl cells can be traced medially into dorsal cortex, dorsomedial cortex and medial cortex. Caudal lateral cortex contains pyramidal cells whose somata occur in layers 2 and 3 and whose dendrites extend radially up to the pial surface. In addition, three populations of neurons occur in both rostral and caudal lateral cortex. Stellate cells occur in all three layers and have dendrites which arborize in all directions. Double pyramidal cells occur primarily in layer 2 and have dendrites which form two conical fields whose long axes are oriented radially. Horizontal cells occur in layer 3 and have dendrites oriented concentric with the ependyma. Fink-Heimer preparations of snakes which underwent lesions of the main olfactory bulb show that the primary olfactory projections to cortex are bilateral and restricted precisely to rostral lateral cortex. Electron microscopic degeneration experiments indicate that the olfactory bulb fibers end as terminals which have clear, spherical vesicles and asymmetric active zones. The majority are presynaptic to dendritic spines in outer layer 1. These studies establish that lateral cortex in snakes is heterogeneous and contains two major parts, each containing two subdivisions. The rostral and caudal parts have characteristic neuronal populations. Primary olfactory input is restricted to rostral lateral cortex and seems to terminate heavily on the distal dendrites of bowl cells. Axons of some of these cells leave lateral cortex, so that the rostral lateral cortex forms a direct route by which olfactory information reaches other cortical areas. The functional role of caudal lateral cortex is not clear.  相似文献

Chlorophthalmus corniger is redescribed on the basis of recently collected specimens. The species is redefined as a species of Chlorophthalmus with the lower jaw terminating in a distinctly projecting horizontal plate with strong, spine‐like processes directed forward from the plate's corners; body silvery grey, with numerous minute black spots and traces of broad darker crossbars; base of anterior dorsal fin spines and distal parts of dorsal fins black; adipose fin tiny with numerous black spots; caudal fin black; 3·5 scales above lateral line; three rows of cheek scales; head very large, 34·3–40·1% standard length (LS); eye large, 29·8–40·8% head length (LH); pectoral fin long, extending to beyond dorsal fin base, 21·7–26·2% LS. Chlorophthalmus bicornis is a junior synonym of C. corniger based on the examination of the type series of both species. It is confined to the northern half of the Indian Ocean, reliably recorded from Somalia and the Gulf of Aden to southern Java, Indonesia, at depths between 200 and 500 m. A lectotype and three paralectotypes were designated for C. corniger. DNA barcodes for Indian species of Chlorophthalmus were generated.  相似文献

The data of long-term ecological studies (1999–2014) are used for assessing the impact of a new Caspian invader Mnemiopsis leidyi A. Agassiz, 1865 on marine and anadromous fish species. The introduction of the ctenophore and its massive development in the Caspian Sea have mainly affected planktophagous fish, especially the most abundant species anchovy sprat (Clupeonella engrauliformis Borodin, 1904) and sturgeons (Family Acipenseridae). Mnemiopsis leidyi is one of the main negative factors preventing the restoration of the populations of Caspian fishes, especially anchovy tyulka. The critical state of the resources of the spawning parts of sturgeon populations (Family Acipenseridae) has been reinforced as a result of the massive development of M. leidyi.  相似文献

The preoptic area/anterior hypothalamus (POA/AH) sits as a boundary region rostral to the classical diencephalic hypothalamus and ventral to the telencephalic septal region. Numerous studies have pointed to the region's importance for sex‐dependent functions. Previous studies suggested that migratory guidance cues within this region might be particularly unique in their diversity. To better understand the early development and differentiation of the POA/AH, cytoarchitectural, birthdate, immunocytochemical, and cell migration studies were conducted in vivo and in vitro using embryonic C57BL/6J mice. A medial preoptic nucleus became discernible using Nissl stain in males and females between embryonic days (E) E15 and E17. Cells containing immunoreactive estrogen receptor‐α were detected in the POA/AH by E13, and increased in number with age in both sexes. From E15 to E17, examination of the radial glial fiber pattern by immunocytochemistry confirmed the presence of dual orientations for migratory guidance ventral to the anterior commissure (medial‐lateral and dorsal‐ventral) and uniform orientation more caudally (medial‐lateral). Video microscopy studies followed the migration of DiI‐labeled cells in coronal 250‐μm brain slices from E15 mice maintained in serum‐free media for 1–3 days. Analyses showed significant migration along a dorsal‐ventral orientation in addition to medial‐lateral. The video analyses showed significantly more medial‐lateral migration in males than females in the caudal POA/AH. In vivo, changes in the distribution of cells labeled by the mitotic indicator bromodeoxyuridine (BrdU) suggested their progressive migration through the POA/AH. BrdU analyses also indicated significant movement from dorsal to ventral regions ventral to the anterior commissure. The significant dorsal‐ventral migration of cells in the POA/AH provides additional support for the notion that the region integrates developmental information from both telencephalic and diencephalic compartments. The sex difference in the orientation of migration of cells in the caudal POA/AH suggests one locus for the influence of gonadal steroids in the embryonic mouse forebrain. © 1999 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
