During the Neogene of South America, Anhingidae was represented by several species, mainly with greater sizes than the extant members. In the present contribution, body mass and locomotor habits of Anhinga minuta, the smallest known darter, were inferred. Body mass was estimated using two methods, one with measures of a tibiotarsus (the holotype) and the other, with measurements of a humerus; locomotor habits were inferred through muscular reconstructions and wing parameters (wing span, wing area and wing loading). Estimates of wing span and wing area were based on the length of humerus, assuming a condition of isometry with respect to Anhinga anhinga; wing loading was obtained through a relation formula between wing area and body mass. The results obtained indicate a body mass of about 729 g, a wing span of 0.958 m, a wing area of 0.117 m2 and a corresponding wing loading of 61 N/m2. These values and also the proximal insertion of the musculus pectoralis are consistent with those of a soaring bird but with more frequent flapping than extant anhingids. Furthermore, the inferred musculature for tibiotarsus indicates abilities for swimming, climbing and moving through the vegetation as in extant representatives.  相似文献

Colors of living organisms are produced by selective light absorption from pigments and/or by light scattering from highly ordered nanostructures (i.e., structural color). While the physical bases of metallic colors of arthropods and fish are fairly well‐known, those of birds are not. Here we examine structurally based silver color and its production in feathers of the waterbird species Anhinga. This achromatic color is distinguished from grey by high specular reflectance, from white by low diffuse reflectance, and from both by high gloss. Light and electron microscopy revealed three modifications of feathers likely leading to silver color. First, proximal barbules were highly elongated and contained glossy black color at their base and white color at their pennulum. Second, this glossy black portion contained a single outer layer of keratin weakly bounded by melanosomes. Finally, the white portion contained a disordered amorphous matrix of keratin and air. Optical analyzes suggest that these structures produce, respectively, glossy black color through thin‐film interference and white color through incoherent light scattering. Silver color likely results from the combined reflectance of these adjacent structures. This represents a distinct mechanism for attaining silver colors that may have been partially derived through selection for display, thermoregulation or decreased hydrophobicity. J. Diving birds have to overcome buoyancy, especially when diving in shallow water. Darters and anhingas (Anhingidae) are specialist shallow-water divers, with adaptations for reducing their buoyancy. Compared to closely-related cormorants (Phalacrocoracidae), darters have fully wettable plumage, smaller air sacs and denser bones. A previous study of darter diving behaviour reported no relationship between dive duration and water depth, contrary to optimal dive models. In this study I provide more extensive observations of African darters Anhinga melanogaster rufa diving in water<5 m deep at two sites. Dive duration increases with water depth at both sites, but the relationship is weak. Dives were longer than dives by cormorants in water of similar depth (max 108 s in water 2.5 m deep), with dives of up to 68 s observed in water<0.5 m deep. Initial dives in a bout were shorter than expected, possibly because their plumage was not fully saturated. Dive efficiency (dive:rest ratio) was 5–6, greater than cormorants (2.7±0.4 for 18 species) and other families of diving birds (average 0.2–4.3). Post-dive recovery periods increased with dive duration, but only slowly, resulting in a strong increase in efficiency with dive duration. All dives are likely to fall within the theoretical anaerobic dive limit. Foraging bouts were short (17.8±4.3 min) compared to cormorants, with birds spending 80±5% of time underwater. Darters take advantage of their low buoyancy to forage efficiently in shallow water, and their slow, stealthy dives are qualitatively different from those of other diving birds. However, they are forced to limit the duration of foraging bouts by increased thermoregulatory costs associated with wettable plumage.  相似文献

Although the avian family Anhingidae is unequivocally monophyletic, the number and relationships of the component species within the single genus (Anhinga) have long remained unclear. Here, we use extensive mitochondrial and nuclear DNA sequence data (8,878 bp) to show that four species should be recognized. Our fully resolved and well‐supported tree shows that the American Anhinga (Anhinga anhinga) is sister to the three Old World species, with the Oriental (A. melanogaster) and African (A. rufa) Darters sister within the Old World clade, which also includes the Australian Darter (A. novaehollandiae). We estimate that the divergence between the New World and Old World branches occurred 19–22 mya, with the Australian Darter separating from its Old World congeners 14–16 mya and the Oriental and African species splitting ~10 mya. The genus is yet another example of osteological conservatism in the Suliformes, which is comparable to that shown by the cormorants and shags. Nevertheless, the relationships we infer are congruent with recent plumage studies and are biogeographically plausible. We suggest that further investigation of the variation within the African and Australian Darters would be of interest.  相似文献

Spheres of a nut-like morphology–a "kernel" formed from spherules contained in a "shell" of globular sub-units–were a unique feature of the cover on the eggshells of six species of the order Podicipitiformes: Red-necked grebe (Podiceps grisegend) , Great crested grebe (Podiceps cristatus) , Little grebe (Tachybaptus ruficollis) , Black-necked grebe (Podiceps nigrkollis) , Slavonian grebe (Podiceps auritus) and Pied-billed grebe (Podilymbus podiceps). The spheres did not give a pattern with X-ray diffraction; the innermost ones were embedded in the dense crystalline layer on the outer surface of the calcitic portion of the shell. Electron-probe microanalysis revealed that the cover of spheres contained principally oxygen, calcium, phosphorus and sulphur and infra-red analysis demonstrated the presence of phosphate. The outer surface of the stratum of spheres was bounded by a thin, fissured layer of amorphous material.
These observations raise questions about the ionic environment obtaining in the shell gland towards the end of shell formation and the adaptive significance of the cover on the eggshells of members of the Podicipitiformes.  相似文献

Basal metabolic rate (MR), body temperature (T(b)) and wet thermal conductance (C(wet)) of three tropical species of fruit-doves were investigated at ambient temperatures (T(a)) of 11-33 degrees C in activity (alpha) and rest (rho) phases to investigate the possible effect of obligate frugivory on the physiology of columbids. The basal metabolic rates of Ptilinopus melanospila (black-naped fruit-dove, 94 g), Drepanoptila holosericea (cloven-feathered dove, 198 g) and Ducula pinon (Pinon's imperial pigeon, 748 g) are 20-38% lower than predicted for all birds, including granivorous columbid species from temperate and tropical regions. The MR was minimal at a T(a) value of approximately 30 degrees C (=lower critical temperature, T(lc)) for all three species, indicating that these rainforest birds are not able to withstand high ambient temperatures as well as arid-adapted members of the pigeon family. Minimal wet-thermal conductance was, on average, higher than expected, indicating poor insulation in these tropical birds. Body temperatures were as expected; however, below T(lc) the body temperatures decreased to levels of 35-36 degrees C (T(a)=12 degrees C).  相似文献

To maximize fitness, many animals must trade off their need to forage efficiently against their need to avoid predators. We studied such a trade-off in four species of tits (Paridae) in a forest near Oxford, UK. During winter, tits form flocks which increase feeding efficiency and reduce predation risk. These flocks feed extensively on beech (Fagus sylvatica) seeds, the abundance of which may be critical for winter survival. Because these seeds drop to the ground, where birds are exposed to sparrowhawk (Accipiter nisus) attack, tits need to trade off their need to find seeds against the proximity to protective cover, provided by dense clusters of hawthorn (Crataegus spp.). The quality of the beech crop differs markedly between trees and years. During a year of abundant beechmast, most tits searched for seeds close to protective cover. This 'safety-first' strategy precluded visits to superabundant food patches if they were too far from protective cover. Among beech trees near to cover, tits tended to prefer those with high seed density. Tits benefited from foraging under trees with high seed density because this correlated significantly with seed mass per square metre and because mean search times decreased with increasing seed density. Finally, we show experimentally that great tits, Parus major, can discriminate between edible (viable) and inedible (empty) seeds.  相似文献

By means of a comparative analysis of 12 morphological and behavioural characters, the timaliine genus Trichastoma and its relatives in the tribe Pellorneini are revised to reflect new understanding of inter- and intrageneric relationships (cf. Mann et al. 1978). Trichastoma as constituted by Deignan (1964) is here subdivided into three unambiguously monophyletic genera, the Malayan Trichastoma and Malacocincla , and the African Illadopsis.
Evidence is presented indicating that the reconstituted Trichastoma should be considered the stem genus for the tribe. Reviewing the distribution of morphological and behavioural characters, the general implication is that the African forms share a recent common ancestor with those from Asia. Distributional data support the contention that the group originated in the Malayan region and colonized westward through southern Asia and Arabia to Africa (probably in early Quaternary) when humid and warm conditions fostered a continuous Afro-Asian corridor of tropical wooded habitats. The postulated greater age of the pellorneine assemblage in Malaysia, along with the region's insular geography, has fostered a larger species radiation than that in continental Africa. Recent desiccation of Arabia and central and northwestern India probably caused widespread regional extinction of linking forms and has isolated the Pellorneini into two humid forest refuges in equatorial Africa and eastern Asia.  相似文献

A phylogenetic analysis of the interrelationships of the barbets (Capitonidae) and the toucans (Aves: Ramphastidae, Superfamily Ramphastoidea) is presented. Thirty-two morphological characters from the literature and independent osteological observations were analysed. Character polarity was determined by outgroup comparison to the Picidae, Indicatoridae, Galbulidae, Bucconidae and Coraciiformes. Four alternative phylogenetic hypotheses were compared: (1) the overall most parsimonious morphological phylogeny, (2) the most parsimonious morphological phylogeny in which the capitonids and ramphastids were hypothesized as monophyletic sister groups, and (3) and (4) the most parsimonious hypotheses for the evolution of the morphological characters within two proposed DNA-DNA hybridization phylogenies of the ramphastoids. The analysis focused on the higher level relationships of ramphastids and capitonids and interrelationships among capitonid genera. Two cladistic analyses were performed using 26 phylogenetically informative characters, and the PAUP and CONTREE computer alogorithms. The most parsimonious morphological phylogeny required fewer character changes and had a lower consistency index than any of the alternative hypotheses but congruence between the most parsimonious phylogeny and the second, revised DNA-DNA hybridization hypothesis was very high. Based on these results the monophyly of the Capitonidae is rejected. The ramphastids and the Neotropical capitonids form a well corroborated clade within the pantropical ramphastoid radiation. Neither the African, Asian nor New World capitonids is monophyletic. The genus Trachyphonus is the sister group to all other capitonids and ramphastids. The sister group to the ramphastids is the genus Semnornis. The interrelationships of the Old World capitonids excluding Trachyphonus are not completely resolved by these morphological data but one of the alternative phylogenetic resolutions is presented as a preliminary hypothesis. The clades in this resolved phylogeny are diagnosed and the palaeontology and biogeography of the ramphastoids arc-reviewed in light of this new evidence. A phylogenetic classification is proposed in which the Capitonidae is rejected and the capitonids and ramphastids are placed in seven subfamilies of the Ramphastidae.  相似文献

Summary Gas conductance of the shell, rates of O2 consumption, CO2 production and air cell gas tensions were measured in pre-internal pipping, 19 day-old chicken eggs that were selected for a wide range in shell conductance. Regional conductance was measured in eggs with partially waxed shells.Surface-specific shell conductance was not uniform over the egg; it was over 3-fold higher at the poles than at the equator. Conductance was about 59% higher over the air cell than over the chorioallantoic part of the egg. Surface-specific perfusion was 12% higher in the air cell. Therefore the in the air cell was higher, and the lower, than values calculated for the whole egg. The mean difference in between the air cell and the chorioallantoic part of the egg was 14.8 Torr, and that of , was 7.0 Torr. These differences were somewhat dependent on total conductance. Respiratory gas exchange ratio ( ) was higher in the air cell (R=0.82) and lower in the chorioallantoic region (R=0.67) than for the whole egg (R=0.70). Air cell R increased slightly in eggs of higher total conductance.Mismatching of regional shell conductance and chorioallantoic perfusion contributes to a functional venous shunt that is partly responsible for nonequilibrium between the air cell and the blood in the chorioallantoic veins.Symbols and abbreviations D gas diffusity - F A fractional surface area - F G fractional conductance - G conductance - G diff diffusion conductance - G perf perfusion conductance - PA average gas pressure (O2 or CO2) - Pac gas pressure in air cell - PE gas pressure in respiratory chamber - Pca gas pressure over chorioallantois - perfusion  相似文献

Cryptic species of passerine birds lack notable morphological differentiation and can best be identified by molecular and bioacoustic markers. Here we investigate seven cryptic species of the golden-spectacled warbler (Seicercus burkii complex) with respect to territorial song and cytochrome-b (cyt-b) sequences. Their phylogenetic relations to other Seicercus species and to members of the genus Phylloscopus are inferred by the same methods. Three separate lineages of Seicercus are nested within different branches of the molecular Phylloscopus tree. The S. burkii complex is a monophyletic unit comprising seven species (S. burkii s. str., S. whistleri, S. valentini, S. soror, S. omeiensis, S. tephrocephalus and S. affinis). S. xanthoschistos turned out to be a close relative of Phylloscopus davisoni within the P. reguloides group. Two isolated sister taxa, S. grammiceps and S. castaniceps, also branch together with the P. reguloides group. Within the S. burkii complex the overall haplotype and nucleotide diversity is highest in taxa from the Chinese middle and upper mountain belt (S. valentini, S. omeiensis and S. soror), indicating at least partially restricted gene flow in these species. This is explained by the fragmentation of high-altitude habitats in China while in the Himalayas the vicariant species S. whistleri inhabits a more continuous mountain belt at the same altitude. For the Chinese species from medium and high altitudes, past range expansion is indicated by significantly negative Tajima Ds. According to pairwise genetic distances, most species of the S. burkii complex have diverged 5 myr ago, the most recent split between S. burkii and S. tephrocephalus is dated 2 myr ago. Coalescence times for haplotype lineages of the different species range from 9 up to 12 myr, and between 5 and 6 myr for S. burkii and S. tephrocephalus.

Within Seicercus divergence of song features such as frequency parameters and syntax structures correlate with genetic distances between taxa. The three cyt-b lineages of Seicercus correspond to different clusters in a discriminant analysis by acoustic parameters. Common syntax structures of territorial song in the Phylloscopus/Seicercus assemblage are: (1) an introductory element derived from specific calls and (2) a syntax of trills and repeated element groups or a combination of both. There are clear indications that these song structures have repeatedly emerged, were lost or were altered in different branches of the phylogenetic tree at different times. Absolute differences between taxa in frequency parameters or in an acoustic divergence index increase significantly with growing genetic distances. However, due to multiple parallel evolution phylogenetic information provided by single acoustic traits decreases with increasing numbers of taxa involved in the investigation.  相似文献

Cockatoos are the distinctive family Cacatuidae, a major lineage of the order of parrots (Psittaciformes) and distributed throughout the Australasian region of the world. However, the evolutionary history of cockatoos is not well understood. We investigated the phylogeny of cockatoos based on three mitochondrial and three nuclear DNA genes obtained from 16 of 21 species of Cacatuidae. In addition, five novel mitochondrial genomes were used to estimate time of divergence and our estimates indicate Cacatuidae diverged from Psittacidae approximately 40.7 million years ago (95% CI 51.6-30.3 Ma) during the Eocene. Our data shows Cacatuidae began to diversify approximately 27.9 Ma (95% CI 38.1-18.3 Ma) during the Oligocene. The early to middle Miocene (20-10 Ma) was a significant period in the evolution of modern Australian environments and vegetation, in which a transformation from mainly mesic to xeric habitats (e.g., fire-adapted sclerophyll vegetation and grasslands) occurred. We hypothesize that this environmental transformation was a driving force behind the diversification of cockatoos. A detailed multi-locus molecular phylogeny enabled us to resolve the phylogenetic placements of the Palm Cockatoo (Probosciger aterrimus), Galah (Eolophus roseicapillus), Gang-gang Cockatoo (Callocephalon fimbriatum) and Cockatiel (Nymphicus hollandicus), which have historically been difficult to place within Cacatuidae. When the molecular evidence is analysed in concert with morphology, it is clear that many of the cockatoo species' diagnostic phenotypic traits such as plumage colour, body size, wing shape and bill morphology have evolved in parallel or convergently across lineages.  相似文献

The morphology of the middle ear region including the basicranium and quadrate of tinamous is compared among ratites and flying birds belonging to the Procellariiformes, Sphenisciformes, Pelecaniformes, and Ciconiiforms. The middle ears of tinamous and ratites share a number of important characters including absence of a separate foramen for the glossopharyngeal nerve; eustachian tube, carotid artery, and stapedial artery encased in bone; and a metotic process with vascular canals or notches. Outgroup analysis confirms these characters as synapomorphies. These data support the position that the Tinami and Ratiti form a monophyletic assemblage.  相似文献

The karyotype of the osprey consists of 74 chromosomes. There are no large macrochromosomes and no typical microchromosomes. Autosome No. 2 has a prominent secondary constriction in the long arm. The Z chromosome is similar in size and shape to the largest autosome, the W is a small metacentric. Among the Falconiformes, the osprey karyotype mainly resembles the karyotypes of some accipitrid species. However, certain characteristic features of the karyotype, a unique secondary constriction chromosome and absence of microchromosomes, speak in favour of maintaining the osprey in a family of its own, Pandionidae.  相似文献

Understanding oscine passerine dispersal patterns out of their Australian area of origin is hampered by a paucity of robust phylogenies. We constructed a molecular phylogeny of the oscine family, Oriolidae, which is distributed from Australia through to the Old World. We used the phylogeny to assess direction and timing of dispersal and whether dispersal can be linked with the well‐documented movements of geological terranes in the Indonesian Archipelago. We sampled 29 of 33 species of Oriolidae from fresh tissue and from toe pads from museum specimens, and examined two nuclear introns and two mitochondrial genes. Model‐based phylogenetic analyses yielded strong support for clades that generally mirrored classical systematics. Biogeographical analyses and divergence time estimates demonstrated that the family originated in the Australo‐Papuan region from where it dispersed first to Asia and then onwards to Africa and the Philippines before back‐colonising Asia and the Indonesian archipelago. Thus, contrary to several other avian families in the region, Oriolidae represents a sequential dispersal pattern from Australia to Africa via Asia. However, it is noteworthy that the Pacific islands and archipelagos remain uncolonised and that members inhabiting Wallacea are recent colonisers suggesting that Oriolidae are poorly adapted to island life.  相似文献

A skeletal neomorph – the preglossale – is described from the tip of the tongue in Passer. This medial unpaired skeletal element is a dorsally open trough articulating with the anterior tips of the paraglossalia and supporting the heavy epidermal pad of the seed-cup. The large paired Mm. hypoglossus anterior originate from the posterior half of the preglossale and insert onto the anterior bodies of the paired paraglossalia; they serve to depress the anterior portion of the preglossale. A regular pattern of dermal papillae is present in the seed-cup; these are arranged in about 20 rows of six to 8 papillae per row. Each papilla contains a series of Merkel cells and associated nerve endings (touch receptors). The seed-cup serves to orient and hold the seed in place while it is being husked; the battery of tactile receptors provides information on the position of the seed on the tongue. The preglossale serves to support the seed-cup and to change its shape – the curvature of the dorsal surface – as it is depressed relative to the paraglossalia. The paraglossale and associated features of the seed-cup in Passer would provide a valuable preparation to study a diversity of problems such as developmental interactions between endomesodermal and ecto-mesenchymal skeletal features, the ontogenetical development of Merkel cells, and the sensory physiology of Merkel cells and their associated nerve endings as tactile corpuscles.  相似文献
