A total of 462 schoolgirls aged 7-8 and 17-18 years were examined anthropometrically (45 body measurements and 10 skinfolds) in a cross-sectional study. The data were processed in two age groups: 7-8-year-olds (n = 205) and 17-18-year-olds (n = 257). Relying on average height and weight in the groups, both groups were divided into five body build classes: small, medium, large, pyknomorphous and leptomorphous. In these classes, the differences in all other body measurements were compared, and in both age groups, analogous systematic differences were found in length, width and depth measurements and circumferences. This enabled us to compare proportional changes in body measurements during ten years, using for this ratios of averages of basic measurements and measurement groups in the same body build classes. Statistical analysis by the sign test revealed statistically significant differences between various body build classes in the growth of averages. Girls belonging to the small class differed from the girls of the large class by an essentially greater increase in their measurements. Our results suggest that the growth rate of body measurements of girls with different body build can be studied by the help of body build classification.  相似文献

Endocranial volume (EV) estimation is widely used in physical anthropology for assessing brain size differences between taxa and monitoring the emergence of brain growth patterns in modern humans. However, to date, no reference data are available for modern human EV ontogeny. We measured 94 skulls with known sex and age (ranging from 0 to 7.5 years) from the osteological collection of Strasbourg University (OCSU) by using an accurate digital active contour model algorithm on 3D virtual models, reconstructed by CT. The OCSU data also allow us to propose improved equations for estimating EV in immature individuals from dry skull diameters (length, width, and height). Aside from the EV, the average proportional endocranial volume (PEV), corresponding to the ratio of EV at a given age to the average EV in the corresponding adult population, was also computed. EV nearly doubles during the first year of life, and later continues to expand more slowly, at least until 7 years of age. No sex differences can be demonstrated between the EV distributions of boys and girls in this sample. However, although PEV at birth is identical in girls and boys, it later displays significantly higher values in the girls of our series. PEV obtained at birth is 22%, which is quite different from values established for the brain itself from autopsied individuals, or MRI data. This suggests that assessments of EV and PEV values in fossil specimens should be conducted by using identical measures in comparative samples of extant humans and apes.  相似文献

The aim of the study was to determine cognitive and motor status factors in female children aged 10-14 years and to identify developmental and/or integration functions according to age. The study included a sample of 162 female schoolchildren aged 10-14 years divided into two groups: 84 girls aged 10-12 (X 11.26, SD 0.68) years and 78 girls aged 13-14 (X 13.52, SD 0.63) years. Study results showed a statistically significant between-group difference in the overall system of variables (MANOVA), with the level of significance determined for each individual variable (ANOVA). The older group of subjects showed significantly superior results in comparison with the younger group in the motor tests assessing flexibility, agility, psychomotor speed, explosive strength of throwing type and repetitive strength of the trunk, as well as in the test assessing cognitive functioning. Qualitative differences between the two age groups (prepubertal and pubertal) were determined by use of the matrix of variable inter-correlations factorized by the procedure of principal components that were then transformed to promax solution. The results thus obtained indicated cognitive functioning to take significant part in the motor efficacy of girls aged 10-14 years. In the younger age group (10-12 years), cognitive functioning was related to the motor system that integrates muscle tone regulation and agility/coordination. In the older age group (13-14 years), cognitive functioning was involved in the formation of the first and third factor isolated, i.e. in the factor regulating coordination and intensity of energy mobilization of lower extremities (general motor efficiency) and, to a lesser extent, in third factor regulation the intensity of energy mobilization of upper extremities and trunk strength.  相似文献

AIMS/METHODS: We established age- and sex-related reference ranges for serum insulin-like growth factor-I (IGF-I) and insulin-like growth factor binding protein-3 (IGFBP-3) levels in 807 healthy Turkish children (428 boys, 379 girls), and constructed a model for calculation of standard deviation scores of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 according to age, sex and pubertal stage. RESULTS: Serum IGF-I and IGFBP-3 concentrations tended to be higher in girls compared to boys of the same ages, but the differences were statistically significant only in pubertal ages (9-14 years) for IGF-I and only in prepubertal ages for IGFBP-3 (6-8 years) (p < 0.05). Peak IGF-I concentrations were observed earlier in girls than boys (14 vs. 15 years, Tanner stage IV vs. V) starting to decline thereafter. IGFBP-3 levels peaked at age 13 and at Tanner stage IV in both sexes with a subsequent fall. Serum levels of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 increased steadily with age in the prepubertal stage followed by a rapid increase in IGF-I in the early pubertal stages. A relatively steeper increase in IGF-I but not in IGFBP-3 levels was observed at age 10-11 years in girls and at 12-13 years in boys which preceded the reported age of pubertal growth spurt. At late pubertal stages, both IGF-I and IGFBP-3 either did not change or decreased by increasing age. Interrelationships between growth factors and anthropometric measurements have been described, and the physiologic consequences of these have been discussed in detail. CONCLUSIONS: Differences in the pattern of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in the present paper and those reported in other studies emphasize the importance of locally established reference ranges. Establishment of this reference data and a standard deviation score prediction model based on age, sex and puberty will enhance the diagnostic power and utility of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 in evaluating growth disorders in our population.  相似文献

In the estimation of the developmental regularity among children it is important to know the relation between the developmental and the calendar age. It is particularly important in the estimation of the level of development among children with an increased level of guided motor activity. It takes place, for instance, in the case of children practising swimming. In auxology there are many morphological, physiological and motor features which are regarded as the measure of the developmental age. For several years researches have been conducted on the EMN index as the determinant of the biological age. The EMN index shows continuous changes during ontogeny, proves the existence of stages in the developmental age and is also considerably correlated with the calendar age. This is an ecosensitive factor. The EMN index differentiates individuals from another as well as groups isolated with regard to the effect of the environmental factors, for instance, the different levels of motor activity. The aim of this investigation is to estimate the standard of biological maturity (the body height and mass, the EMN index) among children, who went through a guided swimming training. Morphological features are most often used as the measures of development. However, they can become unreliable when they themselves establish the criterion of selection to a sports discipline or when some ranges of values are optimal on some given standards. The EMN index is not burdened with these features. The children who go through training show the higher level of the EMN index values than the children who do not go. The effect of this is the fact that young swimmers are biologically older than their peers. However, the shape of the curve of development of the EMN index in swimmers goes at a different level depending on the seniority of training.  相似文献

The relationship between the CHE2 locus of serum cholinesterase (BChE) and adult human weight was studied in a sample of 225 CHE2 C5+ individuals and 225 CHE2 C5- controls matched for sex, height, age and race. With respect to the intensity of the C5 band staining (scored 1-6), 113 individuals had faint C5 bands (scores 1-3) and 112 intense C5 bands (scores 4-6). The individuals with intense CHE2 C5+ phenotype showed a significantly lower mean adult weight (64.66 +/- 0.73 kg) when compared to their controls (70.59 +/- 0.97 kg) and a significant reduction in weight variance (59.81 and 105.18, respectively). Individuals with faint C5 bands, although showing a negative correlation between weight and C5 band intensity, did not differ from their controls in mean weight.  相似文献

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the intercorrelation between three genetic assays in 112 subjects. The group was pooled from two originally separate but homogeneous subgroups of 56 persons each. Procedures included assays for hprt mutant frequencies, micronuclei in human lymphocytes, and mutations at the glycophorin A (gpa) loci. We found no statistically significant or biologically important intercorrelations among the three biomarkers. We did, however, observe significant correlations between loge hprt mutant frequency and cloning efficiency (inverse correlation for these 2 variables), age and loge hprt mutant frequency, an inverse relationship between cloning efficiency and age, and an important differential sex effect favoring a greater micronuclei frequency in females than males. No significant correlations between the covariates of interest and glycophorin A variant frequencies NN or NO were observed. Using multivariable linear regression, age was found to account for the majority of the variability in hprt mutant frequency (greater than sex and/or smoking); for micronuclei data, only sex contributed a statistically significant and biologically important proportion to the total variation. We conclude that despite observing no significant intercorrelations between the three assays performed simultaneously from the same individuals in a large population database, a significant correlation between age and hprt mutant frequency and an inverse association between cloning efficiency and hprt do exist; furthermore, we verified the strong differential sex-specific effect on micronucleus frequencies.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to determine cognitive and motor status factors in female and male children aged 10-14, as well as developmental and/or integration functions according to gender. The study included 162 girls and 134 boys aged 10-14, divided into four groups: 84 girls aged 10-12 (mean age 11.26, SD 0.68), 84 boys aged 10-12 (mean age 11.41, SD 0.50), 78 girls aged 13-14 (mean age 13.52, SD 0.63) and 50 boys aged 13-14 (mean age 13.21, SD 0.53). The significance of quantitative differences between boys and girls in the overall system of variables was defined based on the results of canonic discriminant analysis of variance, and within each variable based on the results on univariate analysis of variance (ANOVA). In the younger age group (10-12 years), girls were superior to boys in a test assessing flexibility (Seated straddle stretch), whereas, compared to girls, boys had greater strength of the trunk (Crossed-arm sit-ups), greater explosive strength ofjump and sprint type (Standing broad jump and 20 m dash), and coordination (Obstacle course backwards and Steps laterally). In the older age group (13-14 years) differences in flexibility were even more prominent in favor of girls, whereas the differences in explosive strength increased in favor of boys, especially of the throwing type with better agility (Steps laterally), balance (Board balance) and greater static strength of arms and shoulders (Bent-arm hang). In order to determine qualitative differences between pubertal and prepubertal girls and boys, the matrix of variable inter-correlations was factorized by the procedure of principal components procedure, that were then transformed to promax solution. The results showed that cognitive functioning had a significant role in the motor efficacy of girls and boys aged 10 to 14. In the age group of 10-12 years, in females, cognitive functioning is related to the motor system which integrates the regulation of muscle tone with agility/coordination, whereas in males there is a relation between cognitive abilities and the regulator of speed of upper extremities movement frequency. In the age group of 13-14 years, in females, cognitive functioning is involved in forming the factors for regulation of coordination and the intensity of energy mobilization in lower extremities, and to some degree, in the factor for regulation of intensity of energy mobilization in upper extremities and strength of the trunk, whereas in males the integration of synergetic regulation of movement in terms of balance and agility in terms of speed of direction change is carried out with significant involvement of cognitive abilities.  相似文献

There are numerous studies concerning sexual dimorphism in body proportions, but only a few have investigated growth in the relative length of particular segments of the upper and lower limbs during adolescence. The aim of the study is an assessment of sex differences of longitudinal growth in the relative length of the forearm and knee height among adolescents. Sample involved 121 boys and 111 girls, participants of the Wroclaw Growth Study, examined annually between 8 and 18 years of age. Sexual dimorphism in six ratios: forearm length and knee height relatively to: trunk, height, and limb length were analyzed using a two‐way analysis of variance with repeated measurements. The sex and age relative to an estimate of maturity timing (3 years before, and after age class at peak height velocity [PHV]) were independent variables. All of the ratios showed significant sex differences in interaction with age relative to age at PHV. The relative length of the forearm, in boys, did not change significantly with the years relative to age at PHV, whereas in girls, was the lowest in the two first age classes and afterward significantly increased just 1 year before and during the adolescent growth spurt, remaining unchanged in further age classes. For relative knee height no clear pattern for sex differences was noticed. It is proposed that relatively longer forearms, particularly in relation to the trunk in girls, could have evolved as an adaptation to more efficient infant carrying and protection during breastfeeding.  相似文献

Scaling peak VO2 to body mass in young male and female distance runners.   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
This study examined age- and sex-associated variation in peak oxygen consumption (VO2) of young male and female distance runners from an allometric scaling perspective. Subjects were from two separate studies of 9- to 19-yr-old distance runners from the mid-Michigan area, one conducted between 1982 and 1986 (Young Runners Study I, YRS I) and the other in 1999-2000 (Young Runners Study II, YRS II). Data from 27 boys and 27 girls from YRS I and 48 boys and 22 girls from the YRS II were included, and a total of 139 and 108 measurements of body size and peak VO2 in boys and girls, respectively, were available. Subjects were divided into whole year age groups. A 2 x 9 (sex x age group) ANOVA was used to examine differences in peak VO2. Intraindividual ontogenetic allometric scaling was determined in 20 boys and 17 girls measured annually for 3-5 yr. Allometric scaling factors were calculated using linear regression of log-transformed data. Results indicated that 1) absolute peak VO2 increases with age in boys and girls, 2) relative peak VO2 (ml x kg(-1) x min(-1)) remains relatively stable in boys and in girls, 3) relative peak VO2 (ml x kg(-0.75) x min(-1)) increases throughout the age range in boys and increases in girls until age 15 yr, and 4) peak VO2 adjusted for body mass (ml/min) increases with age in boys and girls. The overall mean cross-sectional scaling factor was 1.01 +/- 0.03 (SE) in boys and 0.85 +/- 0.05 (SE) in girls. Significant age x sex interactions and significant scaling factors between sexes identify the progressive divergence of peak VO2 between adolescent male and female distance runners. Mean ontogenetic allometric scaling factors were 0.81 [0.71-0.92, 95% confidence interval (CI)] and 0.61 (0.50-0.72, 95% CI) in boys and girls, respectively (P = 0.002). There was considerable variation in individual scaling factors (0.51-1.31 and 0.28-0.90 in boys and girls, respectively). The results suggest that the interpretation of growth-related changes in peak VO2 of young distance runners is dependent upon the manner of expressing peak VO2 relative to body size and/or the statistical technique employed.  相似文献

The fact that more boys are born than girls (104-107 boys for every 100 girls) has been known since 1662. Factors determining the sex ratio at birth rate are of 2 kinds: factors determining the primary sex ratio, i.e., sex ratio at conception, and factors determining the survival of the embryo in utero. Y-bearing and X-bearing sperm may have different motility or different survival time. The age of the ovum at fertilization and the chemical balance of the female genital tract have an effect on sex ratio at conception. High levels of circulating gonadotropins may imply a lower sex ratio at birth as well as a higher rate of dizygotic twinning. Male conception also appears to be higher early and late in the menstrual cycle. The fact that women exposed to higher coital rates conceive earlier in the menstrual cycle may account for the greater number of boys born during wars. Prenatal male mortality is reportedly highest between gestational months 3-5, lower between months 6-8, and higher again st term. Also, immunological interaction between mother and embryo may account for some sex selective spontaneous abortions. 3 sociodemographic determinants of sex ratio at birth are thought to be maternal age, paternal age, and birth order. Higher prenatal male mortality may be correlated with socioeconomic conditions, since higher socioeconomic status lowers prenatal mortality in general. The effects of parental age, birth order, and parity are less clear. Race is also a factor, since the sex ratio at birth for blacks is lower (102-104) than for whites (106). 14 univariate and 19 multivariate studies of effects of maternal age, paternal age, parity, birth order, race, and socioeconomic status on sex ratio at birth, with sample sizes in the millions from various countries have been analyzed. More boys are born to younger parents, and lower order births have a higher proportion of males than do higher order births. In the multivariate analyses, when the effects of paternal and and birth order are controlled for, the effect of maternal age weakens, and the effect of paternal age appears to be stronger. The effect of birth order remains but is very small, and the effect of race persists independent of any effect of other variables. Maternal age, parity, and birth order are positively correlated with proportion of male stillbirths. The results of the multivariate analyses show all of the effects to be very small, but that maternal age has no effect on sex ratio at birth; paternal age and birth order have a negative effect, and the racial effect persists independent of any other effect. The racial effect is clearly biologically determined at conception because blacks have higher levels of circulating gonadotropin and therefore a higher probability of conceiving girls. Parents in higher socioeconomic classes are more likely to have sons, but the effect is largely due to the excess male mortality during most of the gestational period.  相似文献

The aim of this work is an analysis of the process of growth and an assessment of the physical fitness of children and youths with short stature. The material contains results of a long-term investigation of the growth of boys and girls with the diagnosis: simple body height deficiency (hypostatura simplex). The investigation was carried out in Swietokrzyskie Province, Poland, in the years 1980-1997. It comprised 471 individuals: 143 girls aged 5-18 years and 328 boys aged 5-19 years. A different degree of the skeleton age is connected with a different dynamic of growth of short-stature girls and boys. Pubescent increase in the rate of growth occurs in individuals with a considerable retardation of the bone age later, particularly among boys. The growth process lasts longer in them, therefore, the final body height is achieved later and it is greater in individuals whose bone age is concordant with the calendar age. The level of physical working capacity of short-stature children does not show any significant difference in comparison with that in individuals with correct body height, and relative values of the indicators of physical fitness, related to body mass, are even higher in short-stature children. Individuals with a greater body height deficiency are characterised by a lower level of physical fitness.  相似文献

The developmental age of a growing person does not necessarily correspond to his or her chronological age. The two sexes differ considerably in their developmental tempo, and there are tempo differences also within the same sex. Early developers appear older, late developers appear younger than their chronological age might suggest. Based on a sample of 8675 German boys and 8689 girls of the same ethnicity, aged between 8 and 17 years sex differences of height, weight and secondary sexual characteristics are analyzed. Girls on average, develop faster than boys. Their peak of highest increments of height occurs at 10.2 years and is positioned early within the events of sexual maturity. The peak of highest increments of height in boys occurs at age 11.2 on average and is positioned relatively early within the sequences of secondary sexual characteristics. Maturing development starts with breast-stage 2 in girls at age 10.9 and penis-stage as well as scrotum-stage 2 in boys at age 11.1 on average. The development of pubic hair follows and menarche in girls at age 12.7, respectively spermarche in boys at age 13.8, marks the border to theoretical fertility. There are remarkable differences in the tempo of sexual development between the different types of body shape. In girls the pyknomorphic types are the early developers. Breast stage 2 for instance occurs at age 10.1 in the stocky and corpulent pyknomorphic girls and at age 13.0 in the tall and slender leptomorphic girls. This is different in boys. Here are much less differences between the types of body shape, but generally it is the leptomorphic type, at whom the stages of his secondary sexual characteristics are developed a little earlier.  相似文献

Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases whose incidence shows constant growth in childhood. The objective of this work was to look into asthma incidence in children in relation to their age group and sex in a retrospective study, at Tuzla Canton area. The study comprised children of both sexes, age 0-14 who fell sick with asthma within the period from January 1st 2003 to December 31st 2007. The overall incidence and the incidence in relation to age group and sex was calculated as the number of children suffering from asthma, within the age group 0-14 years per 1000 children of the same age group in the Tuzla Canton. Asthma was diagnosed in 277 children (66.1% male and 33.9% female). The difference between asthma frequency in boys and girls was significant (chi2 = 56.16; df = 1; p < 0.0001). The average difference in proportion between the boys and girls was 32.2% (95% CI = 24.32-40.08). From this sample group the boys had a 3.8 times greater risk (OR = 3.79; %95 CI = 2.67-5.39) of contracting asthma. The average rate of incidence of asthma for both sexes in the observed period was 0.67/1000 (95% CI; 0.6-0.7; for boys 0.86/1000; for girls 0.47/1000). There was a statistically significantly higher incidence of asthma in boys in relation to girls (t = 6.3836, df = 32; p < 0.0001). The epidemiological data obtained could be useful for early detection and adequate treatment of children with asthma in the mentioned area.  相似文献

The striped marlin (Tetrapturus audax) is found in temperate and tropical waters of the Pacific and Indian Ocean. It is particularly abundant in the southern tip of the Baja California peninsula. Specimens brought to Cabo San Lucas port (22 degrees 53' N y 109 degrees 54' W) by the sport fishery fleet that operates withing a radius of 54 km from 1988 to 1993 were sexes, measured and weighed. A total 1030 individuals were sampled. Dorsal fin spines (389) were collected for age estimation. The spines were sectioned and hyaline-opaque bands counted. The relation of length to spine radius was similar for males and females. The fourth dorsal spine reflected the growth of the fish. The rhythm of growth mark formation is yearly and related to the sea surface temperature. Ten age groups were found and the seventh group was the most abundant, followed by groups "6" and "8". The age structure of the striped marlin was stable in the study period. The observed sizes were 160-280 cm jaw length with 90% of the organisms measuring between 190 and 225 cm. The small individuals recruit to the fishery from June to December.  相似文献

Growth hormone (GH) secretion can presently be investigated by several methods: pharmacological provocative tests, study of 24-h GH secretion, measurement of somatomedin-C (Sm-C)/insulin-like growth factor (IGF) I, and the growth hormone-releasing hormone (GHRH) test. In order to compare the results obtained, these methods were used in 257 children with growth retardation (169 boys, 88 girls). Their height SD was -2.7 +/- 0.2, chronological age 11 3/12 +/- 1 6/12 years, and bone age 8 4/12 +/- 1 4/12 years. Mean growth velocity was 4.5 +/- 1.5 cm/year. One hundred and thirty-eight boys and 80 girls were prepubertal, and 31 boys and 8 girls were pubertal (B2 G2). All children underwent the study of 24-h GH secretion (n = 257) and pharmacological provocative tests (two tests, n = 213; one test n = 44). Sm-C/IGF I was measured in prepubertal children (n = 131), and a GHRH test was carried out (n = 153). In addition, the mean integrated concentration of growth hormone secretion (IC-GH) was assessed in a control group of 23 children and was found to be 5.4 +/- 1.2 ng/ml/min. The IC-GH in the group as a whole was 2.6 ng/ml/min. The mean maximum peak during pharmacological tests varied considerably according to the test used, ranging from 7.8 ng/ml for the arginine test to 17.1 ng/ml for the glucagon and betaxolol test. Forty pairs of twins from 6 to 15 years of age were subjected to two rentgenographies of the right hand. The degree of similarity between the twins of one pair was studied by the value of the absolute and relative increase of sizes of the hand phalanges. Zygotes, sex and age of children were taken into account. The effect of hereditary factors on the growth of hand phalanges in boys is pronounced better than in girls. In the formers the degree of similarity between the twins of one pair is lower than in the latters. In 12-15 years of age such similarity is higher than in 8-11 years old twins.  相似文献

Research from various countries consistently reported an advantage of boys over girls in general knowledge and was also suggestive of some overall trends regarding specific domains of general knowledge that were speculated to stem from biologically differentiated interests. However, results were heterogeneous and, as of yet, had not been evaluated meta-analytically. Moreover, previous research drew on overly homogeneous high-school or undergraduate samples whose representativeness appears problematic; mostly, likely moderators, such as school type, student age or parental education, were also not directly investigated or controlled for. We provide a meta-analytical aggregation of available results regarding sex differences in general knowledge and present new data, investigating the psychometric properties of the General Knowledge Test (GKT), on which previous research primarily relied, and explored sex differences in a large and heterogeneous Austrian high-school student sample (N = 1088). The aggregated sex effect in general knowledge was of medium size in previous research, but differences in specific domains were heterogeneous across countries and only modest at best. Large sex differences in our data could be explained to a large part by school-related moderators (school type, school, student age, parental education) and selection processes. Boys had a remaining advantage over girls that was only small in size and that was consistent with the magnitude of sex differences in general intelligence. Analysis of the GKT yielded no evidence of biologically differentiated interests, but of a specific interest in the humanities among girls. In conclusion, previous research likely overestimated sex differences in general knowledge.  相似文献
