The population ecology of the beetle Speonomus hydrophilus , occurring both in caves (reduced fluctuations in many abiotic parameters) and under the deepest layer of soil in mountains (MSS, more exposed to climatic variations), was studied in four habitats in the French central Pyrenees We have assessed some of the characteristics of the environment where these populations occur c g physical data (altitude and exposure), geologic data (nature of the parent-rock) and abiotic parameters (temperature with its seasonal fluctuations) and we investigated the relative importance of environmental structure and ecological characteristics on the temporal organization of S hydrophilus and the troglobitic fauna which cohabits The climatic study shows the existence of an annual thermal cycle which is regular and well marked for the MSS habitats but slightly out of phase with the surface cycle These periodic variations however slight may be stressful for troglobitic species In the MSS populations, the phenology of the entire community is reflected in the pattern seen in Speonomus The analysis of faunal profiles shows that samples follow the same seasonal succession during the annual cycle A potential seasonal rhythm of emergence may reflect a seasonal rhythm of vitellogenesis which produces a rhythm of egg-laying  相似文献

A synthesis of ecological data available for subterranean fishes throughout the world is presented, and comparatively analyzed in an evolutionary context. Methods of ecological research are described, and their potential and limitations for the study of hypogean fishes are discussed. Ecology of troglobitic (exclusively subterranean) fishes is discussed with focus on distribution areas, population densities and sizes, use of habitat and movements, life cycle and feeding. When data are available, these species are compared with their epigean relatives. Putative ecological autapomorphies of troglobitic fishes, including habitat change, adaptations to cope with food scarcity, and precocial lifestyles, are interpreted in ecological and evolutionary contexts. Species interactions among subterranean species, including cases of syntopy and predation are briefly analyzed. Non-troglobitic hypogean fishes, with their ecological importance and evolutionary role, are also addressed. Problems of classification of subterranean fishes according to the Schiner-Racovitza system (troglobites, troglophiles and trogloxenes) are discussed, and a scenario of evolution of subterranean populations is presented.  相似文献

The mesovoid shallow substratum (MSS) of two areas in the Moncayo Massif (Zaragoza, Spain) was sampled for a year with subterranean pitfall traps installed at one meter depth in stony debris. Throughout this period, a large contingent of imagoes of Dima assoi Pérez Arcas 1872 (Elateridae) was found; this is a species whose genus is disjunctively distributed at high altitudes, in the Himalayas and Europe. It frequently appeared in the four subterranean traps located in one of the two areas (a bare scree), as well as in some surface pitfall traps, but less frequently in the other area (a beech forest). This fact contrasts with the knowledge about this species, given its nocturnal nature and its sublapidicolous behavior, but seems to agree with its morphological features. Nevertheless, apart from anecdotal information, almost all other aspects of the biology of this species remain unknown. In this work we provide both biotic and abiotic data about the subterranean habitat where this species has been found. The implications of these findings are discussed in relation to its biology and to the significance of its possible exaptations to the subterranean environment as a result of adaptation to montane habitats.  相似文献

Many ant species construct subterranean nests. The presence of their nests may explain soil respiration “hot spots”, an important factor in the high CO2 efflux from tropical forests. However, no studies have directly measured CO2 efflux from ant nests. We established 61 experimental plots containing 13 subterranean ant species to evaluate the CO2 efflux from subterranean ant nests in a tropical seasonal forest, Thailand. We examined differences in nest CO2 efflux among ant species. We determined the effects of environmental factors on nest CO2 efflux and calculated an index of nest structure. The mean CO2 efflux from nests was significantly higher than those from the surrounding soil in the wet and dry seasons. The CO2 efflux was species‐specific, showing significant differences among the 13 ant species. The soil moisture content significantly affected nest CO2 efflux, but there was no clear relationship between nest CO2 efflux and nest soil temperature. The diameter of the nest entrance hole affected CO2 efflux. However, there was no significant difference in CO2 efflux rates between single‐hole and multiple‐hole nests. Our results suggest that in a tropical forest ecosystem the increase in CO2 efflux from subterranean ant nests is caused by species‐specific activity of ants, the nest soil environment, and nest structure.  相似文献

Previous studies on the locomotor activity of troglobitic (exclusively subterranean) species have shown that circadian rhythmicity may be reduced in populations evolving in the absence of zeitgebers such as daily cycles of light and temperature; therefore, circadian activity rhythms, although not infradian nor ultradian rhythms, seem to have been selected by external, ecological factors. We studied the locomotor activity of a highly specialized Heptapteridae catfish (undescribed genus and species) from Chapada Diamantina, NE Brazil, compared to another specialized Brazilian troglobitic heptapterid, Taunayia sp. Locomotor activity was continuously measured in the laboratory with an infra-red photocell system. Seven specimens of the new genus were tested, each one during 14 consecutive days according to the following schedule: three days in DD → seven days in LD (12:12 h) → four days in DD. Data were submitted both to fast Fourier transform periodogram followed by Siegel's test of significance and Lombs - Scargle periodogram techniques in order to identify spectral composition of the time series. In general, results were similar to those obtained for Taunayia sp.: (a) for most specimens, absence of significant circadian components in locomotor activity under DD; (b) for all specimens, significant circadian components under LD, with higher levels of activity during the dark phase, as expected for species belonging to nocturnal epigean taxa; (c) for most specimens, no residual oscillations recorded when free-running conditions were reinstalled. Circadian locomotor activity detected under LD may thus be interpreted as a direct, masking effect of the LD cycle. This suggests a pattern for highly specialized troglobitic species, isolated for a long time in the subterranean habitat, with a progressive reduction of circadian time-keeping mechanisms. Our studies also demonstrate the potential of subterranean organisms for investigation of the origin, evolution, functioning and genetics of circadian rhthmicity.  相似文献

The synthesis of evolutionary biology and community ecology aims to understand how genetic variation within one species can shape community properties and how the ecological properties of a community can drive the evolution of a species. A rarely explored aspect is whether the interaction of genetic variation and community properties depends on the species'' ecological role. Here we investigated the interactions among environmental factors, species diversity, and the within-species genetic diversity of species with different ecological roles. Using high-throughput DNA sequencing, we genotyped a canopy-dominant tree species, Parashorea chinensis, and an understory-abundant species, Pittosporopsis kerrii, from fifteen plots in Xishuangbanna tropical seasonal rainforest and estimated their adaptive, neutral and total genetic diversity; we also surveyed species diversity and assayed key soil nutrients. Structural equation modelling revealed that soil nitrogen availability created an opposing effect in species diversity and adaptive genetic diversity of the canopy-dominant Pa. chinensis. The increased adaptive genetic diversity of Pa. chinensis led to greater species diversity by promoting co-existence. Increased species diversity reduced the adaptive genetic diversity of the dominant understory species, Pi. kerrii, which was promoted by the adaptive genetic diversity of the canopy-dominant Pa. chinensis. However, such relationships were absent when neutral genetic diversity or total genetic diversity were used in the model. Our results demonstrated the important ecological interaction between adaptive genetic diversity and species diversity, but the pattern of the interaction depends on the identity of the species. Our results highlight the significant ecological role of dominant species in competitive interactions and regulation of community structure.  相似文献

We studied the locomotor rhythmicity in heptapterine catfishes, genus Taunayia, under free-running conditions (DD) and LD cycles (12:12). Taunayia sp., anophthalmic and depigmented undescribed species from a cave in northeastern Brazil, is the fourth Brazilian troglobitic catfish studied with focus on circadian rhythms. Weak free-running rhythmicity, with absence of significant circadian components, was observed for this species when compared to the epigean, eyed relatives. On the other hand, the studied troglobitic catfishes in general presented significant circadian rhythms under LD cycles, with activity peaks in the night phase probably corresponding to nocturnal activity pattern inherited from their epigean ancestors. However, no residual oscillations were observed after transition from LD to DD. This indicates masking of activity by light-dark cycles. Regression of circadian rhythmicity in the stable, permanently dark subterranean habitat was also observed for other cave fishes. Such regression corroborates the notion that circadian rhythmicity is mainly selected in the epigean environment by ecological factors, namely daily cycles of light and/or temperature.  相似文献

We performed the first combined‐data phylogenetic analysis of ictalurids including most living and fossil species. We sampled 56 extant species and 16 fossil species representing outgroups, the seven living genera, and the extinct genus ?Astephus long thought to be an ictalurid. In total, 209 morphological characters were curated and illustrated in MorphoBank from published and original work, and standardized using reductive coding. Molecular sequences harvested from GenBank for one nuclear and four mitochondrial genes were combined with the morphological data for total evidence analysis. Parsimony analysis recovers a crown clade Ictaluridae composed of seven living genera and numerous extinct species. The oldest ictalurid fossils are the Late Eocene members of Ameiurus and Ictalurus. The fossil clade ?Astephus placed outside of Ictaluridae and not as its sister taxon. Previous morphological phylogenetic studies of Ictaluridae hypothesized convergent evolution of troglobitic features among the subterranean species. In contrast, we found morphological evidence to support a single clade of the four troglobitic species, the sister taxon of all ictalurids. This result holds whether fossils are included or not. Some previously published clock‐based age estimates closely approximate our minimum ages of clades.  相似文献

1. Although caves are generally perceived as isolated habitats, at the local scale, they are often interconnected via a network of fissures in the bedrock. Accordingly, caves in close proximity are expected to host the same, or very similar, animal communities. 2. We explored the extent to which subterranean arthropod communities are homogenous at a local spatial scale of less than 1 km2, along with which cave-specific environmental features result in a departure from the expected homogeneous pattern. We approached this question by studying richness and turnover in terrestrial invertebrate communities of 27 caves in a small karst massif in the Western Italian Alps. 3. Specialised subterranean species were homogeneously distributed among caves and were not influenced by seasonality. The only factor driving their distribution was the distance from the cave entrance, with deeper caves yielding a greater diversity of species. 4. Significant spatio-temporal turnover in species not specialised to subterranean life was observed. In summer, there was a significant homogenisation of the community and a more even distribution of species among sites; in winter, these species were missing or found exclusively at greater depths, where environmental conditions were more stable. Furthermore, caves at lower elevations yielded, on average, a greater diversity and abundance of these species. 5. This study demonstrated that the theoretical expectation of no turnover in community composition in caves in close proximity is not always met. Turnover can be mostly attributed to seasonal patterns and sampling depth; thus, our findings have implications for planning sampling and monitoring activities in caves.  相似文献

The question of whether ecological assemblages are structured by stochastic and deterministic (e.g. interspecific competition) processes is controversial, but it is difficult to design sampling regimes and experiments that can dissect the relative importance of stochastic and deterministic processes in natural assemblages. Using null models, we tested communities of arthropod decomposers in tropical epiphytes for patterns of species co-occurrence, while controlling for habitat gradients, seasonal variations and ecological succession. When environmental conditions were controlled, our analysis showed that the communities were structured stochastically. However, analysing mixed sets of communities that were deliberately created either from two distinct heights or two successional stages revealed that communities were structured deterministically. These results confirm that habitat gradients and dispersal/competition trade-offs are capable of generating non-random patterns within decomposer arthropod communities, but reveal that when such effects are accounted for, species co-occurrence is fundamentally random.

Capsule Daylength, rather than latitude, was found to be an important determinant of variation in clutch size.

Aims To describe the nature of spatial and temporal variation in clutch size, and explore the ecological correlates of these patterns.

Methods We tested the prediction that seasonal declines in clutch size will be greater at higher latitudes. The environmental variables focused on were the influence of daylength, plant productivity, seasonality (i.e. Ashmole's hypothesis) and physiological mechanisms that relate clutch size to ambient temperature. We used data from 1980 to 2003 on spatial variation in clutch size across Britain for single‐brooded species, in which clutch size can be taken as a measure of annual reproductive investment. We included all seven species, from five families, with sufficient data in the British Trust for Ornithology's Nest Record Scheme.

Results There are strong seasonal declines in clutch size but little evidence for latitudinal gradients in clutch size or in latitudinal gradients in the rate of seasonal clutch size decline. Of the environmental variables investigated, daylength had the most marked effect on clutch size; this was positive in diurnal species and negative in the one nocturnal species.

Conclusions Although this study was confined to a relatively small latitudinal range of 8°, we found marked latitudinal gradients in a number of factors thought to drive spatial patterns in clutch size. Moreover, such variation is of sufficient magnitude to generate spatial patterns in other ecological variables in Britain. There is thus no simple explanation for the lack of a latitudinal gradient in clutch size. The results concerning daylength indicate that the time available for foraging is an important determinant of variation in clutch size.  相似文献

Troglobionts are organisms that are specialized for living in a subterranean environment. These organisms reside prevalently in the deepest zones of caves and in shallow subterranean habitats, and complete their entire life cycles therein. Because troglobionts in most caves depend on organic matter resources from the surface, we hypothesized that they would also select the sections of caves nearest the surface, as long as environmental conditions were favorable. Over 1 year, we analyzed, in monthly intervals, the annual distributional dynamics of a subterranean community consisting of 17 troglobiont species, in relation to multiple environmental factors. Cumulative standardized annual species richness and diversity clearly indicated the existence of two ecotones within the cave: between soil and shallow subterranean habitats, inhabited by soil and shallow troglobionts; and between the transition and inner cave zones, where the spatial niches of shallow and deep troglobionts overlap. The mean standardized annual species richness and diversity showed inverse relationships, but both contributed to a better insight into the dynamics of subterranean fauna. Regression analyses revealed that temperatures in the range 7–10°C, high moisture content of substrate, large cross section of the cave, and high pH of substrate were the most important ecological drivers governing the spatiotemporal dynamics of troglobionts. Overall, this study shows general trends in the annual distributional dynamics of troglobionts in shallow caves and reveals that the distribution patterns of troglobionts within subterranean habitats may be more complex than commonly assumed.  相似文献

As in every field of comparative biology, phylogeny provides an independent reference system in studies on cave life evolution to test current theoretical proposals. Using phylogeny, sound hypotheses on the ancestral states of characters and their subsequent changes can be made by polarizing the characters between related taxa. Hypotheses on evolutionary processes can also be tested by comparing the patterns they imply with independently inferred phylogenetic patterns. The power of the tests relies upon the independence of phylogenetic patterns (built with cladistics using Wagner parsimony) and the theoretical proposals under study. Classical assumptions on the evolution of troglobitic life are analysed with this methodology. The following points are discussed: what is a troglobitic taxon? Are there features characteristic of troglobitic taxa? Is troglobitic life an evolutionary dead end? What circumstances favour troglobitic evolution? Using phylogenetic analysis, the presence or absence of so-called troglomorphic features were inferred in troglobitic taxa. In fact these taxa can be characterized only by their behavioural ecology. Pre-adaptations (exaptations) can also be precisely defined. Cave living does not appear to be an evolutionary dead end. Two patterns subsequent to cave life appearance have been documented: speciation of troglobitic taxa in the subterranean environment, and reversal to an epigean habitat. Troglobitic life thus turns out to be one step in the diversification of clades. Troglobitic life is usually explained as an evolution under the pressure of unfavourable environmental conditions, or the conquest of a new resource, or the result of biological interactions (competition, predation). Phylogenetic analyses show that none of these hypotheses propose clear alternatives on cave life evolution. Moreover most of their a priori statements cannot easily be falsified. As such they have only limited explanatory power.  相似文献

Interior spaces of the forested rocky debris (MSS) represent a transition zone between the surface and deep underground spaces and a place of animal adaptation to underground life. They serve as a refuge for relict fauna as well. The study was conducted in the limestone scree slopes in Sivec National Nature Reserve (?ierna Hora Mts, Western Carpathians, elevation about 500 m a. s. l.) covered by linden-maple forest from September 2008 to November 2009. The effort was to define the vertical and seasonal aspects of invertebrates and temperature regime. Invertebrates were collected by using subterranean traps (plastic cups with 4% formaldehyde, inserted into the depths 5?C95 cm through a plastic tube), which were checked monthly. Almost 26,000 specimens were trapped. Arthropods highly dominated over gastropods and earthworms. Collembola (67.61%) and Acarina (15.55%) were eudominant. Macrofauna was represented mainly by larvae of Holometabola (7.55%) and adult Diptera (5.11%) and Coleoptera (1.13%). All these groups were captured along the total depth gradient. Coleoptera were studied in more details. Among 11 Coleoptera families, Staphylinidae predominated and were captured at all levels. Rather high species diversity was found: 67 spp. excluding common epigeic fauna. Some species supposed to be subterranean, e.g., Bryaxis frivaldszkyi slovenicus, Duvalius bokori valyianus and Omalium validum. Activity of most invertebrate groups decreased significantly with depth (prevalence of surface fauna), but it was not terminated at 1 m under surface; the same was true for beetles, both in activity and diversity. Conspicuous fact is that a mass of subterranean species were traced also close to the surface (35 cm), i.e., probably it is not necessary to put the traps as deep as in this study. Seasonal climate changes affected the activity of invertebrates which was the highest at the end of spring and the lowest during winter, but it was not completely interrupted. Microclimate was characteristic without major temperature fluctuations on the surface. It was stable deeper along with increasing average annual temperature. High diversity and the occurrence of rare faunistic elements as well as specific habitats of MSS are perspective study objects and they merit care; mature design of the next studies considering the effect of season and depth of traps deposition shall do them more effective and less laborious.  相似文献

Sugarcane farmers can utilise a soil conservation technique called green cane trash blanketing, a form of mulching that can increase plant productivity through a number of channels, e.g., via altering soil physical, chemical and biological characteristics, and influence soil arthropod assemblages. Predatory mites (Mesostigmata) are important components of soil communities because they can control populations of other soil-dwelling pest species. Our aim was to characterise mulch-influenced predatory Mesostigmata community assemblages in sugarcane soils in Queensland, Australia. We found that application of a mulch layer significantly increased the abundance of Mesostigmata, and oribatid mites and collembolans, in soils. Furthermore, we observed that the assemblages of Mesostigmata in soil covered by mulch were significantly different to those in bare soil; and the assemblages of Mesostigmata changed over time. The assemblages of Mesostigmata, but not Oribatida or collembolans, were significantly different in soil under mulch depending on whether the mulch was freshly laid, or decomposing. Our results show that the use of mulch, specifically the green cane trash blanket, can increase overall microarthropod abundance including Mesostigmata. This is likely due to increased habitat complexity and changing resource availability.  相似文献
