Abstract. Insect life stages are known imperfectly in many cases, and classifications are based often on only one or a few semaphoronts of a species. This is unfortunate as information in alternative life stages often is useful for scientific study. Although recent examples of DNA in taxonomy have emphasized the identification of indistinguishable species, such sequence data facilitate the association of life history stages and hold considerable promise in phylogenetic analysis, evolutionary studies, diagnostics, etc. These concepts are discussed here and an example is provided from diving beetles (Dytiscidae: Coleoptera). Three unknown larval specimens of an apparent species of Laccophilinae collected in Namibia were associated with the species Philodytes umbrinus (Motschulsky) using DNA sequence data. An 806-bp portion of the gene cytochrome oxidase I was sequenced from the unknown larvae. Several identified adult specimens of species of Laccophilinae from Namibia were also sequenced, including two P. umbrinus specimens and specimens from four Laccophilus Leach species. Additional species of Laccophilus from other areas of the world also were sequenced, as were specimens of Agabetes acuductus (Harris), Australphilus saltus Watts, Neptosternus boukali Hendrich & Balke and a species of Laccodytes Régimbart. Parsimony analysis resulted in two most parsimonious trees with the unknown larva unambiguously resolved in a group with both adult specimens of P. umbrinus (bootstrap value = 100%). The average pairwise p-distance between the unknown larva and adult P. umbrinus specimens averaged 0.09% (0–0.14%), compared with an average divergence between other conspecifics in the analysis of 0.24% (0–0.82%) and an overall average divergence between species of 13.49% (1.90–19.86%). Based on this, the unknown larvae were assigned to P. umbrinus. The larvae are diagnosed and described and their relationship with other Laccophilinae is discussed.  相似文献

ABSTRACT. An undescribed species of aseptate gregarine, for which the name Pterospora schizosoma is proposed, occurs in the coelom of the maldanid polychaete Axiothella rubrocincta (Johnson). The body of the mature gamont is divided into two cylindrical trunks, which are joined anteriorly. Posteriorly, each trunk bifurcates twice, thereby producing four terminal branches. The length of the entire organism varies from 230–600 μm. The organism actively pumps endoplasm from one trunk to the other, and the nucleus (average = 56.2 × 25.9 μm) moves with the flowing endoplasm. In all four of the previously described species, the gamont's main trunks arise from a substantial body mass whereas in P. schizosoma the trunks make up most of the body mass. Pterospora schizosoma's oocysts possess a distinct outer and inner capsule, which contains eight tightly appressed sporozoites.  相似文献

The genus Skidmorella Johnson, previously known only from the South Pacific islands, is discovered in Japan. The type species, Skidmorella magnifica Johnson, is confirmed from Japan as the first record of the species other than the type locality. In addition, two new species, Skidmorella amamiana sp. nov. and Skidmorella quadrisulucia sp. nov., are described from the Ryukyus, Japan. Phylogenetic relationships of the genus Skidmorella and its allies are discussed on the basis of their morphological characters.  相似文献

The new sand goby species Pomatoschistus nanus (Teleostei: Gobiidae) is described from the northern coast of the Levantine Sea (eastern Mediterranean Sea) based on both morphological and DNA barcoding data. The new species is the smallest fish in the Mediterranean Sea and may be distinguished from congeners by the following features: predorsal area, first dorsal‐fin base and breast naked; δ‐pore missing; anterior point of the suborbital row b not reaching level of posterior point of suborbital row d; slightly emarginated caudal fin and nape coloration pattern. DNA barcode data clearly discriminate Pomatoschistus spp. in the neighbour‐joining tree with an average of 17·7% interspecific K2P distance. The most closely related taxon to P. nanus sp. nov. is Pomatoschistus bathi and the most distantly related is Pomatoschistus tortonesei with 11·9 and 21·9% K2P distances respectively. Morphometric and genetic data are also provided for Pomatoschistus bathi.  相似文献

Fifty-two bacteria were isolated from seawater collected in Kandalaksha Bay, White Sea, Russia, and classified by 16S rDNA sequencing. Most of the strains belonged to ubiquitous microorganisms. Pseudomonas was the most abundant genus (21 strains), including species of P. fluorescens, P. putida and P. syringae. Serratia was also common (10 strains) with species S. plymuthica and S. proteamaculans. Sphingobacterium, Flavobacterium and Pantoea were less represented (5, 3 and 2 strains, respectively). The only typical bacterium of marine Arctic regions was Shewanella baltica. The strains were tested for their optimal growth temperature in the range 0–45°C. The majority appeared to be psychrotolerant (42%) or mesophilic-psychrotolerant (40%). In addition, one strain (Bacillus pumilus) showed a rather narrow mesophilic profile. No true psychrophilic bacteria were found. Most of the strains showed a classical curve with fast growth decrease above the optimum; some others displayed uncommon flat curves with scarce differences between maximum and minimum of growth in a wide range of temperatures. Moreover, few strains presented an unusual profile being, in relation to the optimum, more tolerant to high rather than low temperatures. Preferences of the Kandalaksha Bay strains are generally different from those reported in literature for the same species: optima were at lower temperatures and, sometimes, ranges were broader showing increased eurythermism. This could indicate adaptation to the wide temperature variations recorded in this peculiar environment.  相似文献

Data are presented for the fat and water contents of 410 specimens of 11 species of trans-Saharan migrants collected on the northwest coast of Egypt in autumn. Mean fat contents vary from 37% of lean dry weight in Hirundo rustica to 110% in Sylvia communis. There is also much variation in the range of fat contents within individual species, Muscicapa striata and Lanius collurio being exceptionally closely grouped and P. phoenicurus widely dispersed. The results for each species are discussed in relation to their migratory circumstances. On the basis that the birds concerned would have started to cross the eastern Mediterranean with at least 11/2 times as much fat as they contained on landing in Egypt, comparisons are made with data for spring migrants in western Africa and with American trans-Gulf migrants. Water contents, discussed as % of lean dry weight, show considerable variation within each species:the coefficient correlating this percentage with % fat is around 0.50 except in Lanius (0.98) and Oriolus (0.92). On investigating the relationship between wing-length and lean dry weight, we did not find a strong correlation in any of the species and caution in accepting conclusions to the contrary is indicated.  相似文献

Previous phylogenetic studies of the grape downy mildew pathogen, Plasmopara viticola, revealed five cryptic species in eastern North America that differed in their host range and geographic distribution. Preliminary comparative studies also documented differences in temperature responses during infection between certain cryptic species, indicating the biological relevance of knowing which cryptic species of the pathogen are present in a given region. However, limited information is available regarding the presence, prevalence and dynamics of cryptic species of P. viticola in the southeastern United States. Here, 301 P. viticola isolates obtained from cultivated grape species in five distinct grape‐growing regions of Georgia and Florida were subjected to cleaved amplified polymorphic sequence analysis and multilocus sequencing (internal transcribed spacer region of the rDNA, actin and β‐tubulin) to identify cryptic species and infer phylogenetic relationships. Three cryptic species, P. viticola clade aestivalis (Pva), clade vinifera (Pvv) and clade vulpina (Pvu), were identified in Georgia, whereas two, Pva and Pvv, were found in Florida; all three cryptic species are reported here for the first time in Georgia, whereas Pva is reported for the first time in Florida. Pva was the most prevalent cryptic species (72.1% of isolates) and was distributed widely from the North Georgia Mountains to Mid‐Florida, whereas Pvv (27.2%) and Pvu (0.7%) were found only in the Coastal Plain region of the two states. Interestingly, Pvu was obtained from French American hybrid Blanc du Bois and could be subcultured on Vitis vinifera Chardonnay, suggesting a broader host range than only the wild species Vitis vulpina reported previously.  相似文献

Abstract A total of 70 species of gamasid mites (7485 individuals) were collected from the body surface of 38 species of small mammals (3023 individuals) during an investigation of 13 counties of western Yunnan, China, from 1990 to 1996. Most species of gamasid mites have more females (80% 100%) than males (P <0.01). Exceptions are Haemogamasus gongshanensis where males outnumber females (P < 0.01) and Haemolaelaps glasgowi where there are similar numbers of males and females (P > 0.05). No larva was found in most of the mite species. The proportion of individuals at the immature stages (mainly protonymphs and deutonymphs) in most mite species is small (0–12.84%) compared to the adults (P < 0.01). Exceptions are Ornithonyssus bacoti and Haemolaelaps glasgowi where 62.84% and 49.48% respectively are nymphs. The biased sex ratios may reflect the probable different bloodsucking preferences and parthenogenesis of the gamasid mites. The absence of larvae and a low proportion of nymph stages in most mite species probably reflect that the larvae or nymphs of most mite species are non‐feeding or non‐blood sucking and are in their hosts' nests. Another possibility is that some species directly produce protonymphs or even deutonymphs without eggs and larvae which makes it difficult to find the larval stage.  相似文献

Sugar feeding is known to enhance lifespan in many parasitoid species. Several species of phorid flies in the genus Pseudacteon (Diptera: Phoridae) have been introduced in the Southern U.S.A. for the biological control of imported fire ants of Solenopsis species (Hymenoptera: Formicidae). Pseudacteon species are short‐lived flies and little is known about their nutritional ecology. Results from previous studies in our laboratory show that one of the introduced species, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, is capable of feeding on sugar sources with a significant increase in lifespan. However, in Pseudacteon phorid flies, the degree to which sugar feeding can enhance the lifespan of other species is not clear, nor is it known whether there is a relationship between body size and longevity. In the present study, the effect of sugar feeding on the survival of three phorid fly species of different body sizes, Pseudacteon cultellatus Borgmeier, Pseudacteon curvatus Borgmeier and Pseudacteon obtusus Borgmeier, is investigated. For all three species, flies continuously provided with 40% or 20% sucrose solution live longer than individuals provided water only or 40% sucrose solution only on the first day of adult life. However, the degree to which sugar feeding enhanced longevity varies by species and is highest for P. obtusus. The data also indicate that longevity in Pseudacteon phorid flies is related to body size: the largest species (P. obtusus) lives significantly longer than the smaller species (P. cultellatus and P. curvatus). These results suggest that adults of all three Pseudacteon species are capable of feeding on sucrose solution and that sugar feeding can enhance their longevity. The significance of these results is discussed in relation to the field performance of Pseudacteon phorid flies as biological control agents of imported fire ants.  相似文献

Two new thick‐tail scorpions in the genus Parabuthus Pocock, 1890 are described from the gravel plains of the Central Namib Desert, Namibia: Parabuthus glabrimanus sp. nov. ; Parabuthus setiventer sp. nov. The two new species occupy discrete distributional ranges, allopatric with the closely related species Parabuthus gracilis Lamoral, 1979 and Parabuthus nanus Lamoral, 1979. The distributions of the four species are mapped and a key provided for their identification. Revised diagnoses are provided for P. gracilis and P. nanus. The two new species are added to a previously published morphological character matrix for Parabuthus species and their phylogenetic positions determined in a reanalysis of Parabuthus phylogeny. Parabuthus setiventer sp. nov. is found to be the sister species of P. nanus, whereas P. glabrimanus sp. nov. is sister to a monophyletic group comprising P. gracilis, P. nanus, and P. setiventer sp. nov. The discovery of two new scorpion species endemic to the Central Namib gravel plains contributes to a growing body of evidence that this barren and desolate region is a hotspot of arachnid species richness and endemism. © 2010 The Linnean Society of London, Zoological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2010, 159 , 673–710.  相似文献

The peripatric or budding species model has remained theoretical until recently. The habitat preference and range pattern of the mountainous Psorodonotus venosus species group, distributed in Anatolia and Caucasus, offered potential to test the predictions of the model. The study aimed to confirm the parameters and to provide evidence for peripatric speciation in a terrestrial group. Fourteen populations representing the total range of the group were studied. Sequences of two mitochondrial fragments including four loci (12S rDNA+tDNAval+16S rDNA and COI) and a nuclear fragment including three loci (ITS1+5.8S rDNA+ITS2) were obtained and used in phylogenetic, time estimation, population genetics and demographic analyses. Additionally, phenotypical data were provided for the group. Phylogenetic analyses supported the monophyly of the PVG and suggested similar intralineage relationships, but did not support the monophyly of each of the species in the group. The molecular chronograms indicated radiation of the group throughout the Pleistocene. Demographic analyses suggested constant population sizes for the populations in the centre of the range but a significant departure from constancy in four peripheral populations. Genetic diversity is significantly reduced in peripheral populations, but not in others. We arrived to following conclusions. The data suggest that P. venosus is the ancestral species and P. rugulosus, P. tendurek and P. hakkari are bud species, as their haplotypes are nested within P. venosus. As expected under the budding speciation model, (i) in contrast to ancestral species, genetic diversity is reduced, and there are signs of departure from constant population size in bud species; (ii) bud species have isolated and restricted ranges, while the ancestral species does not, (iii) the relative ages of ancestral and bud species are the most reliable data to confirm the model, and chronograms of PVG well support this prediction, and (iv) the divergence events in the group co‐occurred with major climatic transformations of the Pleistocene.  相似文献

We investigated the levels and patterns of genetic diversity of Pinus densata Master in Yunnan. Horizontal starch-gel electrophoresis was performed on macrogametophytes collected from nine populations in northwestern Yunnan, China. Compared with other gymnosperm species, P. densata has higher mean values for all measures of genetic diversity. Allozyme polymorphism (0.99 criterion) was 97.0% and 71.4% at the species and population levels, respectively. The average number of alleles per locus was 3.1 and 2.0 at the species and population levels. Mean expected heterozygosity was substantially higher in P. densata than average values investigated for other gymnosperms both at the population (H ep = 0.174±0.031) and at the species (H es = 0.190) levels. Of the total genetic variation, less than 12% was partitioned among populations (G ST = 0.112). Our allozyme survey supports the suggestion that the observed higher diversity in P. densata may be attributed partly to its hybrid origin between two genetically distinct species, P. yunnanensis and P. tabulaeformis. In addition, we suggest that introgression would give rise to the increase in genetic diversity occurring in P. densata.  相似文献

The world’s second stand of P. primjenningsi (Paramecium jenningsi complex, Ciliophora, Protista), heretofore known only from India, has been revealed in Ethiopia (Africa). This finding has enlarged the range of this cryptic species and was a trigger to re-analyse the distribution of all members of the complex (known from ~20 tropical locations). The current survey is an initial one, where, based on haplotype networks, a detailed analysis of the relationship within the P. jenningsi complex has been performed. Although the V4 hypervariable fragment of the SSU rDNA gene is widely used as a first-step barcode marker for microbial HTS analyses, it has provided inconclusive results based on the dataset investigated. However, the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2-5’rDNA and COI mtDNA fragments indicate the possibility of the delimitation of the cryptic species of P. jenningsi (which is crucial from the point of view of metabarcoding surveys). We suppose that future sampling of unexplored, tropical regions will certainly change our knowledge about Paramecium biodiversity and biogeography. This sampling will probably rely on the integration of metabarcodes from environmental DNA studies, with molecular data obtained from identified representatives of particular cryptic species.  相似文献

Synopsis Fishes of the genus Pardachirus (Soleidae) are reviewed. Four species are recognized and their distribution mapped: P. marmoratus (Lacépède) from the Red Sea and Indian Ocean, P. pavoninus (Lapédè) and P. poropterus (Bleeker) from the Indo-Pacific, and P. hedleyi (Ogilby) from estuarine waters of Australia. Achirus rautheri Chabanaud is placed in synonymy with P. hedleyi. The ichthyocrinotoxic effect on teleosts of the secretion from P. pavoninus is described and compared with that of P. marmoratus. The distribution of poison glands in these two species shows more glands present on the eyed side. The number of glands range from 212 to 235 in P. marmoratus and 204 to 237 in P. pavoninus and number of rays on fins associated with the poison glands are about the same for both species. P. marmoratus appears to be more toxic than P. pavoninus.  相似文献

Integrative taxonomy is considered a reliable taxonomic approach of closely related and cryptic species by integrating different sources of taxonomic data (genetic, ecological, and morphological characters). In order to infer the boundaries of seven species of the evacanthine leafhopper genus Bundera Distant, 1908 (Hemiptera: Cicadellidae), an integrated analysis based on morphology, mitochondrial DNA, and hyperspectral reflectance profiling (37 spectral bands from 411–870 nm) was conducted. Despite their morphological similarities, the genetic distances of the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (COI) gene among the tested species are relatively large (5.8–17.3%). The species‐specific divergence of five morphologically similar species (Bundera pellucida and Bundera spp. 1–4) was revealed in mitochondrial DNA data and reflectance profiling. A key to identifying males is provided, and their morphological characters are described. Average reflectance profiles from the dorsal side of specimens were classified based on linear discriminant analysis. Cross‐validation of reflectance‐based classification revealed that the seven species could be distinguished with 91.3% classification accuracy. This study verified the feasibility of using hyperspectral imaging data in insect classification, and our work provides a good example of using integrative taxonomy in studies of closely related and cryptic species. © 2015 The Linnean Society of London  相似文献

Puccinia lagenophorae is a rust fungus originating from Australasia which has spread throughout the world. A phylogenetic analysis of taxa related to this species was performed using rDNA (LSU, ITS) sequence data. The analyses revealed a well-supported cluster including all specimens of P. lagenophorae. By evaluating morphological and sequence data, the species is taxonomically re-defined and a list of synonyms is provided. Puccinia distincta on Bellis perennis, a species recently separated from P. lagenophorae, P. saccardoi, a species on the Goodeniaceae, and P. byliana, a species so far only known from South Africa, are reduced to synonymy in P. lagenophorae, as are several other species. Our analysis indicates that P. lagenophorae is likely not derived from the northern hemisphere species P. obscura, but from a species from Australia host-alternating between Asteraceae (aecial host) and Cyperaceae/Juncaceae (telial host). Another related species, P. stylidii (on Stylidium sp., Stylidiaceae) may have been derived from the same parental species as P. lagenophorae. From ontogenetical and morphological studies, the presence of pycnia could not be confirmed in the life cycle of this species, and the width of the pedicel of teliospores at the point of attachment was found to be highly variable and not a taxonomic character. The number of known host species is approximately 150, including 41 new host plants recorded herein.  相似文献

Several species of the family Petraliellidae were first described from the coast of Queensland, including the type species of Sinupetraliella, S. litoralis. These species are redescribed from type, or topotype specimens, and include Petraliella concinna, which has not been certainly found since its introduction in 1891; lectotype material is designated for P. buski and P. magna. Six other species are described from Queensland, P. crassocirca, P. dentilabris, P. dorsiporosa, Mucropetraliella bennetti, M. serrata and M. tuberosa. The species Mucropetraliella tuberosa is a new addition to the Queensland fauna and is described and illustrated here for the first time since its introduction in 1884. The characters of the family Petraliellidae are briefly discussed and the genera to which the Queensland species are assigned is reviewed. A taxonomic key to the ten Queensland petraliellid species described is also provided.  相似文献
