DistylousLinum grandiflorum, L. mucronatum, andL. pubescens have dimorphic pollen grains. In short-styled flowers the exine has monomorphic processes each with a ring of papillae. In long-styled flowers the exine has two types of processes: small processes terminating in a spinule and larger processes with a central spinule surrounded by a ring of spinuels, papillae or buttresses. The distylousLinum species of four different sections, in which morph-specific differences in the wall structure of stigmatic papillae have been reported, also exhibit exine dimorphism. The patterns of these dimorphisms are similar in all four sections in which distyly is present.  相似文献

The fine structure of the secretory papillae of the extrafloralnectaries of cotton (Gossypium hirsutum) is described. The cellscontain a dense cytoplasm with the rough endoplasmic reticulumbeing particularly prominent. The cuticle covering the papillaehas a typical two-layered appearance and is detached from thewall in secretory cells. With maturity, the lateral walls ofthe stalk cell at the base of each papilla become impregnatedwith cuticle-like electron-opaque material. The frequency anddistribution of plasmodesmata have been estimated in all wallsof the papillae. The periclinal walls are traversed by numerousplasmodesmata (about 16 per µ m2 in the distal wall ofthe stalk cell) which, in general, change from a simple to amore complicated structure during nectary development. The resultsare discussed in relation to the role of the ER in nectar secretionand are considered to support the view that pre-nectar followsa symplastic pathway from the phloem to the secretory cells. The young sporocysts had a wrinkled sporocyst wall, numerous papillae on the wall surface and the wall was granular and porous. In the itraconazole-treated culture, the walls of the young sporocysts were also wrinkled, but the characteristic papillae were replaced by larger lumps which were densely packed and coated the entire surface of the sporocyst wall. The mature sporocysts walls were smooth and possessed numerous papillae. In the itraconazole-treated culture, the walls of mature sporocysts walls were also smooth but possessed densely packed larger lumps instead of papillae. At higher magnification, each of the lumps were found to consist of numerous globules. No pores were observed as they were in the normal sporocyst wall.  相似文献

The stigma papillae in Gladiolus are of the “dry” type and are highly vacuolated cells with an organelle-rich peripheral cytoplasm. The cell wall of each papilla is overlain by a distinctive cuticle possessing an irregularly scalloped inner margin. Between the cell wall and cuticle is a layer of amorphous sub-cuticular material. Lipids are detected on the papilla surface. A pollen grain will hydrate and germinate only on a papilla and not on any other (non-papillate) portion of the stigma. The pollen tube penetrates the papilla cuticle, which is forced away from the papilla cell wall by sub-cuticular pollen tube growth. As the cuticle lifts away, the sub-cuticular material disperses. At the base of the papilla, the pollen tube grows onto the adaxial non-papillate surface of the stigma lobe. At this site, the cuticle has been lifted away from the underlying cells by release of a mucilaginous substance from the latter, and the pollen tube grows within this substance beneath the detached cuticle. The cytological features of Gladiolus papillae are compared with other stigma papillae described in the literature. Also, a review of the literature, as well as some of the findings of the present study, suggest that certain prevalent interpretations of dry stigma structure and function may be open to question.  相似文献

The effective pore size of the cell walls of Gladiolus pollentubes (grown in vitro) and stigmatic palpillae has been examinedby the solute-exclusion technique. The estimated pore size in3.5–4.5 nm which is similar to that reported for othercell types, but is smaller than that of wall channels whichhave been demonstrated in stigmatic papillae by freeze-fracturestudies. Within a sample of pollen tubes or stigmatic papillaethere are wide variations in the response to the solute exclusiontests, suggesting variation in the wall structure of individualcells. The organ of Bellonci (oB) in Boreomysis arctica (Krøyer) is described. The fine structure of the organ is found to agree with that of the oB among other investigated peracarideans. The difficulties met by Chaigneau in 1971 when homologizing the organs in B. arctica and in the Isopoda have been eliminated. Into the cavity of the oB, (probably) sensory neurones protrude. The perikarya of the neurones are found in the wall of the oB. On the dendrites there are subterminal dendritic swellings from which dendritic branches and cilia arise. The branching dendrites are characteristic of the oB in B. arctica. Also the cilia branch, thus increasing the amount of sensory membranes in the organ.  相似文献

Intermorph differences in the wall structure and constituents of stigmatic papillae are described for distylous Linum pubescens and L. grandiflorum. In the long-styled morph of both species the wall portion around the apex of the papilla has a thickened cellulose-pectin layer. In the short-styled morph of L. pubescens a cap zone is interposed between the cuticle and apical portion of the papilla wall. The subcuticular cap space contains pectins and lipid particles. Similar particles are also present in deposits on the cuticle surface. Papillae of the short-styled morph in L. grandiflorum lack a cap zone and have only epicuticular lipid deposits. Other distylous Linum species in which the two morphs differ in wall structure of the papillae are L. mucronatum, L. flavum, L. perenne, L. austriacum, and L. maritimum. Studies of stigma dimorphism can help to elucidate evolutionary relations between dimorphic and monomorphic Linum species.  相似文献

Conjugating filaments of Spirogyra were examined with both light and electron microscopes. Initially 2 or more filaments of Spirogyra were attached by mucilagenous material. Papillae appeared first in one filament and then in adjacent positions on the other filament. Subsequent growth of papillae separated the conjugating filaments; wall microtubules disappeared in papillae as they elongated. Golgi activity then increased markedly only in the male filament; mucilage production by these Golgi coincided with contraction of the male gamete from its cell wall and may be responsible for its subsequent migration. The end walls separating papillae dissolved to form the conjugation tube, allowing gamete union. The male protoplast then migrated through the tube and further cytoplasmic condensation formed an elliptical-shaped zygote. During the migration phase, zygote wall formation was initiated and numerous active Golgi apparently contributed material to it. Early zygote maturation was characterized by rapid wall formation and an increase in lipid droplets.  相似文献

The dorsal surface of the tongue of the little tern, Sterna albifrons, has a distinctive anterior region for five-sixths of its length and a terminal posterior region. The anterior region observed by scanning electron microscopy is distinguished along its forward half by a median line from which median papillae protrude. The hind half of the anterior region has a median sulcus without papillae. The deciduous epithelium on both sides of the median line and sulcus bears scattered epithelial protrusions. The posterior lingual region has neither median papillae nor deciduous epithelium. So-called giant conical papillae are located in a transverse row between anterior and posterior regions. Delicate microridges adorn the surfaces of all outer epithelial cells in both regions. Examination of the dorsal lingual epithelium by light and electron microscopy provides histologic and cytologic criteria for distinguishing anterior and posterior regions. Basal cells are nearly alike throughout the dorsal epithelium. Intermediate layer cells of the anterior region contain numerous tonofibrils in electron-dense bundles composed of 10 nm tonofilaments. The outer layer is composed of electron-dense, well-keratinized cells, and electron-lucent epithelial protrusions are present on the exposed surface of the outermost cells. Median papillae are composed of typical keratinized cells, which are nearly filled with keratin filaments. Intermediate layer cells in the posterior region of the tongue are nearly filled with unbundled tonofilaments. There is only a very thin outer keratinized layer in this region.  相似文献

A study was made of the discharge papillae of zoosporangia (ZS), as well as of resistant sporangia and gametangia, of Allomyces (mainly A. × javanicus). It was found that they differ considerably. The discharge papillae of the resistant sporangia apparently arise by a blister-like modification of the inner wall, whereas those of the ZS and the gametangia consist of a pulley-shaped, refractile plug securely placed in a hole in the wall. This plug can be successfully removed from the ZS wall by treatment with sulfuric acid. Solubility and histochemical tests were used to identify the material of the ZS plugs and the results indicate that the material is a pectic substance, most likely protopectin. The plugs of the gametangia presumably have the same composition. A preliminary study was also made of the discharge papillae of representatives of other families of the aquatic Phycomycetes. The results indicate that such pulley-shaped plugs filling a pore in the wall are characteristic only of the ZS and the gametangia of members of the family Blastocladiaceae to which Allomyces belongs.  相似文献

The anatomy and ultrastructure of stigmas in 37 species of 13genera of Commelinaceae are described. The stigmas are papillate, papillae forming a dense fringe of cells around the mouth ofthe stylar canal in most species. The papillar cell wall iscovered by an unstructured cuticle of variable thickness andis of variable thickness because of small wall ingrowths. Thecuticle and the external surface of the papillar cell wall arevariably disrupted, particularly in the mid and basal regionsof the cell. This was not found in species of the genus Aploleiaor Callisia. The cell cytoplasm possesses all major organellesexcept chloroplasts and each cell is vacuolate. In all species except Aploleia mulitiflora the style comprisesan epidermis, a cortex and a hollow, tripartite canal whichis continuous into the ovary cavity. The three vascular strandsare positioned at the apex of each canal lobe. The canal cellsare elongate and tabular and the wall abutting the canal hasingrowths. The style in Aploleia is solid and the transmittingtissue comprises cells whose walls are electron opaque. Thecytoplasms of both types of cell are similar in content althoughthere is a single, large vacuole in canal cells and many smallvacuoles in transmitting tissue. The morphology, position and histochemistry of stigmatic andstylar exudate was similar in all ‘wet’ stigmas. Most of the exudate originates from the stylar canal althoughsignificant contributions are made by the papillae in stigmasof Coleotrype, Dichorisandra and Thyrsanthemum. There is no apparent relationship between stigma structure andthe presence of self-incompatibility. Stigma papillae, stylar canal, transmitting tissue, Commelinaceae  相似文献

The surface structure of adult Haplorchis pumilio from experimentally infected hamsters was studied in detail using scanning electron microscopy. Almost the entire surface of the worm was covered with scale-like spines regularly arranged in transverse rows. Most spines were pectinate. The size of the spines and the number of the teeth in each individual were largest in the spines around the middle region of the worm. The area surrounding the excretory pore was free of spines displaying a slightly wrinkled appearance. Many ciliated papillae were present on the anterior two-thirds of the body. The papillae on the oral sucker were more abundant than those elsewhere. The body papillae were distributed in a bilaterally symmetrical arrangement, appearing in groups, pairs or singly between the spines.  相似文献

In embryological terms the anal papillae are the product of eversion of the hindgut tissues. The rectum and the anal papillae have the same origin and have a marked structural similarity. The insect hindgut is very labile being able to produce salt transporting or ‘chloride cells’ from any of the tissues of which it is composed. The hindgut consists of four distinct regions: the ileum and part of the anal canal have a mechanical function, the rectum and the posterior anal canal contain transporting cells. Two new cell types, ‘interstitial’ and ‘tertiary’ are reported in the rectum. The structure of the anal papillae changes with increased salinity. Changes in the plasma membranes alter the surface area for transport. Changes in the number of mitochondria are not accompanied by changes in oxygen consumption. If mitochondria are the site of oxidative metabolism then their number docs not control the level of oxygen consumption. In Aedes aegypti the papillary epithelium appears to be a syncytium. Across the lumen of the papillae there are cellular sheets supporting the tracheoles. At the base of the papillae there is a cellular transition zone; circular muscles in this region may be used to occlude the papillae. The control of salt transport may be hormonal.  相似文献

Summary High pressure freezing and freeze substitution methods significantly improve the antigenic preservation of S-locus specific glycoproteins (SLSG). The SLSG, which are implicated in the incompatibility response, are localized over the cell wall and cytoplasm. Labeling in the cytoplasm is mainly associated with dictyosomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum. Quantitative analysis show that in cryofixed papillae the labeling was enhanced by approximately 45% over the cell wall and approximately 90% over the dictyosomes compared to chemically fixed papillae.  相似文献

In this study, we describe the microstructure and ultrastructure of the epipodial papillae and epipodial tentacles of Haliotis tuberculata using light and electron microscopy. The epipodial papillae vary morphologically; they are subdivided into several subpapillae whose surface is covered by small micropapillae. The epipodial tentacles are large extendable conically elongated structures whose surface is differentiated in two regions: the dorsal region with long corrugated folds, and a ventral region composed of three parts, a basal part with the same structure as the dorsal, a middle part with shorter corrugated folds and an apical part with large micropapillae. Although the thin sections and ultrastructure examination show that the epithelium of both organs is morphologically similar and composed of supporting cells, sensory cells and different types of secretory cells, there is a certain specialization in their secretory product. Although the epithelium of both structures was positive for acidic glycoconjugates, the tentacle epithelium was also positive for neutral sugars. Further specific differences were revealed by lectin histochemistry. Because papillae and tentacles can be extended or retracted depending on environmental conditions, they probably have tactile and olfactory functions.  相似文献

The characters of leaf epidermis (mainly epidermal cells, stomata, trichomes) have been examined in 48 species of Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis of the Fagaceae. The adaxial leaf epidermis was investigated under light microscope. The epidermal cells of this surface are of two types in terms of the outline of their anticlinal wall. One type is characterized by having straight wall, and this type has been observed in most of the species studied, while the other is characterized by having sinuate or sinuolate wall, and this type has been found only in eight species, such as Q. blakei and Q. hui. There exist two types of trichome-bases on this surface: in one type the bases are singlecelled, and this type has been found in most of the species studied, such as Q. oxyodon and Q. augustinii; while in the other the bases consist of a group of cells, and this type has been found only in nine species, such as Q. thorelii and Q. chungii. The abaxial leaf epidermis was investigated under light microscope and scanning electron microscope. The epidermal cells and the trichome-bases on this surface under LM are in morphology essentially similar to those on the adaxial surface. The stomata under LM include three types: cyclocytic, subcyclocytic and anomocytic. The stomatal density is of some diagnostic value to distinguish between closely related species, e.g. the stomatal density in Q. glauca is higher than that in Q. schottkyana. Under SEM the stomata are elliptical or roundish. The most noteworthy feature of the adaxial leaf epidermis is the trichomes. Eight types of trichomes have been observed under SEM: simple-uniseriate, solitary, papillae, stellate, fused-stellate, stipitate-fasciculate, multiradiate and jellyfish-like. The first type, i.e. the simple-uniseriate trichome, is glandular, other six types, i.e. the solitary, papillae, stellate, fused-stellate, stipitate-fasciculate and multiradiate trichomes, are non-glandular, and the last one, i.e. the jellyfish-like trichome, may represent an intermediate type in structure between the glandular and the non-glandular trichomes. Papillae are very common in subgen. Cyclobalanopsis although in the Fagaceae they were previously reported only in a few species of Lithocarpus. The jellyfish-like trichome, observed only in Q. sichouensis, is reported in the Fagaceae for the first time. The evolutionary trends of trichomes are discussed. The trichomes seem to evolve toward the direction of increasing complexity in structure. Papillae are considered as the pedomorphism of trichomes. From papillae the solitary trichomes and then the stellate ones have evolved. The complicated trichome types with more arms may be produced from relatively simple ones with fewer arms by means of varions fusion: several stellate trichomes are fused to form the fused-stellate ones by basal fusion, and by the same way the fused-stellate ones to form the stipitate-fasciculate ones; the multiradiate trichomes are formed by the stellate ones, in which the arms emerge in a variety of seemingly random directions from a typically rounded common base. Based on the above results, it is considered that the trichome features are of important significance for a better understanding of the infrageneric division of Quercus and the phylogenetic relationships between this genus and the other genera in the Fagaceae. The very common presence of papillae in Quercus subgen. Cyclobalanopsis and in a few species of Lithocarpus may indicate that subgen. Cyclobalanopsis is a quite natural group on the one hand, and may have close relationship with Lithocarpus on the other hand. The thin-walled, jellyfish-like trichomes found in Q. sichouensis are in structure similar to the “glandular” peltate trichomes in Trigonobalanus, a genus generally regarded as the most primitive in subfam. Quercoideae, indicating that the affinity between subgen. Cyclobalanopsis and Trigonobalanus may becloser than that between subgen. Quercus and Trigonobalanus.
