The bushcricket Pantecphylus cerambycinus has two types of stridulatory mechanisms and acoustical signals. The elytro-elytral mechanism typical for tettigonioid bushcrickets is used to produce a narrow-band calling song (peak frequency 15 kHz). An abdomino-alary mechanism is used for disturbance stridulation. Its stridulatory file is situated on the hind edge of the abdominal tergites and consists of 50-70 parallel ridges, covering the whole width of the tergite. The broad-band sound (peak frequency 10 kHz) is produced by the contact between the file and ribs situated on the upper side of the hindwings which are folded in such a way that their upper side is directed toward the tergites. Defensive stridulation in bushcrickets is reviewed here, and its function and evolution discussed in the context of predator avoidance strategies. © 1996 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In a sexual context, it is expected that females base their choice of mate on the behaviours that males perform during courtship, as such behaviours are associated with the male's mate quality. Stridulation is one form of female communication in arthropods, for example, spiders. In spiders, stridulation during sexual interactions is relatively common in some groups but mainly restricted to males. In the pholcid spider Holocnemus pluchei (Pholcidae), both sexes have stridulatory organs. The aims of the present work were to: (a) determine possible differences in the frequency of occurrence of stridulation between females during inter‐sexual interactions, (b) establish female consistency in stridulation along repeated interactions and (c) analyse if female stridulation is associated with certain male behaviours during pre‐copulatory courtship and with male size. Female H. pluchei showed highly repeatable differences in their frequency of stridulation across consecutive encounters with males (ICC = 0.64). However, only a modest level of repeatability was detected in total time females spent stridulating across trials (ICC = 0.19). Females’ mean stridulatory behaviour did not change across ten consecutive trials spread across 20 days, and their behaviour was apparently unaffected by male persistence of copulatory attempted and/or size. These results imply that the frequency of female stridulatory behaviour is a trait that is highly characteristic of each individual. Finally, our work opens the door to determine whether behavioural consistency manifests in other ecological contexts and their functional implications.  相似文献

The effects of the parasitic phorid fly, Pseudacteon tricuspis Borgmeier, on the competitive interactions between the red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, and a native North American ant, Forelius pruinosus (Roger), were investigated in the laboratory. P. tricuspis is a highly host-specific endoparasitoid of S. invicta workers that is currently being reared and released as a biological control agent of S. invicta in the US. We tested the effect of P. tricuspis on the colony growth rate of S. invicta when S. invicta was forced to compete with F. pruinosus for a protein resource (freeze-killed crickets) in laboratory competition arenas. In addition to colony growth rate, we quantified the effect of the phorid flies on the foraging rate of S. invicta. Though S. invicta significantly reduced its foraging rate in the presence of the phorid flies, we did not detect an effect of the flies on colony growth rate. Possible explanations for these results include behavioral compensation by S. invicta for the presence of the flies. We present these laboratory results in light of a literature search indicating that laboratory tests of biological control agent efficacy are good predictors of field efficacy. We conclude that P. tricuspis alone is unlikely to suppress S. invicta populations in the field by reducing their competitive ability.  相似文献

During stridulation in the gomphocerine grasshopper Omocestus viridulus the leg movements, sound pattern and either summed auditory nerve activity or single interneuron activity were recorded. Simultaneous laser interferometric and vibrometric measurements of the displacement and velocity of the tympanic membrane were performed at the pyriform vesicle (d-receptor group). Slow displacements of the tympanic membrane occur in phase with the ventilatory and stridulatory rhythm and reach 10 mpeak-peak and 1–3 mpeak-peak in amplitude, respectively. Additionally, the tympanic membrane oscillates maximally in the range 5–10 kHz. These high-frequency oscillations are due to sound production and motor activity and correspond in amplitude to oscillations evoked by sound pressures of 90-dB SPL. They activate the auditory receptors during most of the stridulatory cycle even during mute stridulation. Only at the lower reversal point of the leg movement are membrane vibrations and receptor activity at a minimum. As a consequence the response of receptors and interneurons to auditory stimuli are generally impaired and an auditory response of receptors and interneurons can be elicited only during a short period at the lower reversal point. Although in this phase of the stridulatory cycle auditory sensitivity is present, males do not show phonotactic responses towards female songs during ongoing own stridulation.  相似文献

Victory or triumph display is a post‐contest signal, performed only by winners and not by losers. While much is unknown about its function, there is mounting evidence that victory displays are widespread among animals. However, evidence remains anecdotal in crabs. Sesarmid crabs belonging to the genera Parasesarma and Perisesarma are known to have characteristic stridulatory structures on their chelipeds. In Perisesarma eumolpe, a mangrove crab, stridulation has been anecdotally purported as a triumph display. We examined whether stridulation in P. eumolpe is a victory display and the factors affecting it by staging 17 contest trials among males and investigating the factors influencing stridulations and fight outcome in 55 fights. Using generalised linear mixed‐effects models, we find that stridulations were generally performed by winners and after fights, especially when the fights were intense. In addition, stridulation was only observed in the context of a contest, never before or outside of it. Stridulation in P. eumolpe is likely a victory display, and, unlike other forms of victory display described for other species, it appears exclusively used for asserting victory.  相似文献

Calling and courtship stridulatory behavior of Chorthippus albomarginatus was induced by injections of acetylcholine agonists into the protocerebrum. Pharmacologically induced stridulation, in many parameters, was quite similar to the natural behavior. However, the order of the courtship element alternation was different from that of the natural song. In some cases the pharmacologically induced stridulation included only one or two courtship elements. Based on the exclusive stimulation of a particular element of courtship songs and similarity of its movement pattern with the calling song, both patterns of Ch. albomarginatus stridulation appear to be homologous. The results obtained on this species confirm the idea of a hierarchic organization of the central nervous control of stridulation in gomphocerine grasshoppers and indicate participation of certain protocerebrum structures in this control.  相似文献

The use of acoustic signals by males during courtship and mating is well known. Nevertheless, their association with female unwillingness to mate is much less studied. In spiders, stridulation during sexual interactions is relatively common in some groups, but mainly restricted to males. In the pholcid spider Holocnemus pluchei, both sexes have stridulatory organs. The aims of the present work were (1) to establish whether female stridulation occurs during intra‐ and inter‐sexual interactions, (2) to determine whether female reproductive status affects the likelihood that she will stridulate and (3) to determine whether female stridulation is influenced by male sexual behaviour. We found that female stridulation usually occurs both during intrasexual interactions and, most frequently, during intersexual interactions. Females with more previous matings stridulated more frequently. Stridulation intensity was higher in females that did not accept new copulations compared with those that copulated. Female stridulation did not vary in elaborated and non‐elaborated courtship. Thus, females use stridulation to communicate levels of sexual receptivity. It is also possible that females use stridulation to indirectly assess male ability to persist and persuade.  相似文献

In contrast to the widespread extirpation of native fire ants (Solenopsis geminata) across southern US following the invasion by imported red fire ants (S. invicta), some residential areas of Austin form unexpected refuges for native fire ants. Ironically, these urban environments provide refuges for the native fire ants while adjacent natural habitats have been overrun by invasive fire ants. Resistance to invasive fire ants in these urban areas occurs mainly in older residential properties constructed prior to the S. invicta invasion, while more recent construction has allowed establishment by S. invicta. The invasive ability of S. invicta is often attributed to escape from parasitoids and efficient dispersal of polygyne multiple queen colonies. Here we also show the importance of landscape parameters in the invasion process, where low levels of disturbance and continuous plant cover in older residential areas form possible barriers to colonization. Dense leaf cover (high NDVI) was also found to be associated with native ant refuges. Long term residential land ownership may have resulted in lower recent disturbance levels and increased plant cover that support refuges of native fire ants.  相似文献

Altered habitats have been suggested to facilitate red imported fire ant (Solenopsis invicta) colonization and dispersal, possibly compounding effects of habitat alteration on native wildlife. In this study, we compared colonization intensity of wood cover boards by S. invicta among four forest management treatments in South Carolina, USA: an unharvested control (>30 years old); a partially thinned stand; a clearcut with coarse woody debris retained; and a clearcut with coarse woody debris removed. Additionally, we compared dehydration rates and survival of recently metamorphosed salamanders (marbled salamanders, Ambystoma opacum, and mole salamanders, A. talpoideum) among treatments. We found that the number of wood cover boards colonized by S. invicta differed significantly among treatments, being lowest in the unharvested forest treatments and increasing with the degree of habitat alteration. Salamanders that were maintained in experimental field enclosures to study water loss were unexpectedly subjected to high levels of S. invicta predation that differed among forest treatments. All known predation by S. invicta was restricted to salamanders in clearcuts. The amount of vegetative ground cover was inversely related to the likelihood of S. invicta predation of salamanders. Our results show that S. invicta abundance increases with habitat disturbance and that this increased abundance has negative consequences for amphibians that remain in altered habitats. Our findings also suggest that the presence of invasive S. invicta may compromise the utility of cover boards and other techniques commonly used in herpetological studies in the Southeast.  相似文献

The larvae of the leaf-feeding weevil Oxyops vitiosa, a biological control agent of Melaleuca quinquenervia, are covered with a viscous orange coating that is thought to protect against generalist predators. This coating is gradually lost as the larvae drop to the ground and pupate in subterranean pupal cells. To test the antipredator activity of this species, four immature life stages (early instars, late instars, prepupae, pupae) were exposed to a common generalist predator, the red imported fire ant Solenopsis invicta. Choice tests were conducted by placing an O. vitiosa individual and a control larva of the weevil Neochetina eichhorniae into an arena containing a S. invicta colony and observing subsequent ant behaviors. S. invicta workers contacted O. vitiosa early instars, late instars, and prepupae less frequently than control N. eichhorniae larvae, and upon contact S. invicta was less likely to behave aggressively toward these O. vitiosa life stages than toward N. eichhorniae larvae. However, S. invicta contacted, attacked, and consumed naked (nonencased) O. vitiosa pupae and N. eichhorniae larvae with equal frequency. Encased O. vitiosa pupae buried in sand were not attacked compared to susceptible encased pupae on the sand surface. By shifting from a chemical defense during the larval stages to a physical defense during the pupal stage, O. vitiosa reduces the risk of attack by this generalist predator.  相似文献

In gomphocerine grasshoppers the neuromuscular patterns of stridulatory hindleg movements are produced by metathoracic rhythm generators under the control of cephalic command neurons. Injections of cholinergic agonists into the protocerebrum activate this command system which induces the performance of stridulatory sequences, resembling natural species specific movements. Injections of GABA, glycine and picrotoxin into the central protocerebrum of the species Omocestus viridulus, Chorthippus mollis and Ch. biguttulus revealed a contribution of inhibitory mechanisms to the control of the stridulatory behaviour. The experiments suggest that inhibition interferes with the cephalic command systems at three levels: (1) sustained inhibition through picrotoxin sensitive receptors acting on all command units while grasshoppers are at rest, and during stridulation on all command units except the one activating the pattern generators of the currently performed movements; (2) premature termination of song sequences, experimentally induced by injections of GABA and glycine; and (3) coupling of a timing mechanism that terminates a song sequence or its subunits with a particular movement pattern after specific durations. These results together with those from previous studies on the pharmacological activation of stridulatory behaviour suggest that a balance of inhibitory and excitatory inputs to the command system selects the appropriate song type and controls its performance. The red imported fire ant, Solenopsis invicta Buren, is an invasive pest that has become widespread in the southern United States and Caribbean after introduction from South America in the 1930s. This species, which has diverse detrimental impacts on recipient communities, was recently discovered in Australia and New Zealand and has the potential to colonize numerous other regions. We used a dynamic, ecophysiological model of colony growth to predict the potential global range expansion of this invasive species. Based on minimum and maximum daily temperatures, the model estimates colony alate production and predicts future geographic range limits. Because S. invicta populations are limited by arid conditions as well as cold temperatures, we superimposed precipitation data upon temperature-based predictions, to identify regions that do not receive enough rainfall to support this species across the landscape. Many areas around the globe, including large portions of Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, and numerous island nations, are at risk for S. invicta infestation. Quarantine officials should be vigilant for any accidental introductions of this pest in susceptible regions. Costs of eradication increase dramatically as the area of infestation grows, and large infestations may be impossible to eradicate. Other South American Solenopsis fire ants (e.g., S. richteri Forel) may become invasive if the opportunity arises, and our predictions for S. invicta may approximate the potential range limits for these species as well.  相似文献

Crows (Corvus brachyrhynchos) are more hesitant to continue attacking and take longer to kill and eat stridulating passalid beetles (Odontotaenius disjunctus) than silenced beetles. This is an experimental demonstration of the deterrent capability of disturbance stridulation by an insect that has no active defences against the predator. Stridulation is not necessary for congregation by colony members. Silenced beetles congregate as effectively as controls. There is no evidence that the disturbance stridulation causes predictable responses in other colony members of this presocial beetle.  相似文献

Stridulation in solifuges has not been investigated yet. We performed a comparative analysis of the stridulatory organs and sounds produced by juveniles of various developmental stages and adults (both sexes) of Galeodes caspius subfuscus Birula. The stridulatory organ is of similar morphology in all developmental stages. The sound that they produced was a broad frequency hissing, composed of one or two chirps with maximum at 2.4 kHz. The intensity of the sound was found to increase with body size. Otherwise, no differences were observed between stridulation in juvenile, male and female individuals. Therefore, we suggest that the stridulation in solifuges has primarily a defensive role. As solifuges are neither venomous nor unpalatable, they might imitate an accoustically aposematic organism that shares the same habitat and has similar circadian activity, e.g. vipers. It may also have an intraspecific function in reduction of cannibalistic tendencies.  相似文献

An expression library was created and 2304 clones sequenced from a monogyne colony of Solenopsis invicta. The primary intention of the project was to utilize homologous gene identification to facilitate discovery of viruses infecting this ant pest that could potentially be used in pest management. Additional genes were identified from the ant host and associated pathogens that serve as an important resource for studying these organisms. After assembly and removal of mitochondrial and poor quality sequences, 1054 unique sequences were yielded and deposited into the GenBank database under Accession Nos. EH412746 through EH413799. At least nine expressed sequence tags (ESTs) were identified as possessing microsatellite motifs and 15 ESTs exhibited significant homology with microsporidian genes. These sequences most likely originated from Thelohania solenopsae, a well-characterized microsporidian that infects S. invicta. Six ESTs exhibited significant homology with single-stranded RNA viruses (3B4, 3F6, 11F1, 12G12, 14D5, and 24C10). Subsequent analysis of these putative viral ESTs revealed that 3B4 was most likely a ribosomal gene of S. invicta, 11F1 was a single-stranded RNA (ssRNA) virus contaminant introduced into the colony from the cricket food source, 12G12 appeared to be a plant-infecting tenuivirus also introduced into the colony as a field contaminant, and 3F6, 14D5, and 24C10 were all from a unique ssRNA virus found to infect S. invicta. The sequencing project illustrates the utility of this method for discovery of viruses and pathogens that may otherwise go undiscovered.  相似文献

This paper focuses on sound production in the larvae of Geotrupes spiniger (Marsham) (Coleoptera: Geotrupidae). A single stridulatory apparatus was identified and then analysed from a structural point of view. Sound was studied using spectography and results included a quantitative analysis with characterizing physical parameters. Results highlight the need to study stridulation in Geotrupidae more in detail, to improve our understanding of its evolutionary and biological meaning.  相似文献

Four types of stridulatory mechanisms were found in 35 species (7 genera) of New Zealand wetas (Orthoptera : Stenopelmatidae). These include: (1) tergo-femoral; (2) tergo-tergal; (3) mandbbuao-mandibular; and (4) pleuro-coxal. These fell into 12 groups, based upon shape, density and pattern of tergal and femoral pegs, number of terga bearing pegs and presence of mandibular tusks bearing stridulatory tubercles. The plesiomorphic condition, consisting of spinose peg patches on 3 or more abdominal tergites rubbed by bands of pegs on the femur, is found in Hemiandrus spp. Apomorphically-derived tergal files have arisen separately in 3 other genera. In Hemideina, (2 species groups) well-formed files are very similar among species. In Deinacrida, (4 species groups), the trend is toward file reduction into one or 2 massive tergal ridges, and embellished femoral pegs. In the tusked wetas (2 gen., 2 spp.), one species has a crude file of many broken ridges. Stridulatory structures on mandibular tusks of both New Zealand species are unique, although the tusks appear to have their origin in African stenopelmatids. The plesiomorphic condition appears to have been deployed originally for defense stridulation (inter-specific communication). Additional intea-specific stridulatory communication developed in Hemideina and Deinacrida, using the apomorphic file and peg mechanisms. Here, the stridulation is associated with defense, calling, mating and disturbance behaviors.  相似文献

Summary Despite its apparent costs, nest relocation is a common phenomenon among ants. Polyrhachis ammon, a common ant in open habitats of eastern Australia, exhibits a high rate of colony emigration to new nest sites. We conducted a field survey and shading experiments in different seasons and years to determine which factors affect colony emigration in this species. We also compared morphological features characterising workers involved in adult transport to determine if workers performing different tasks belong-ed to discernible temporal castes. Nests that were abandon-ed after four weeks were smaller, although distance from a food source and low-level disturbance did not alter re-location rates. The effects of shading and nest temperature on nest survival varied between seasons, as did rates of nest relocation. Transporter workers could not be distinguished from foragers, but had greater mandibular wear and smaller dry mass than transportees. Our results suggest that cues promoting nest relocation in P. ammon may be the result of a combination of factors with varying temporal importance.  相似文献
