The protozoan parasites belonging to the genus Plasmodium have a complex life cycle in which the asexual multiplication of parasites in the vertebrate host alternates with an obligate sexual reproduction in the mosquito. Gametocytes (male and female) produced in the vertebrate host are responsible for transmitting parasites to mosquitoes. Although our understanding of the biology and genetics of sexual differentiation in Plasmodium is expanding, the most basic questions concerning molecular mechanisms of sexual differentiation and sex determination still remain unanswered. Recently, insight into the control of this complex process in P. falciparum and P. berghei has come from studying parasite mutants with aberrant capacities for gametocyte production. The present study sought to determine (1) whether estrogen by itself can defeminize the behavior of pigs during the late juvenile-early pubertal period, and (2) whether the progressive late defeminization reported for pigs is a true organizational effect, as opposed to an artifact of the time between castration and testing. Male pigs were castrated at 19-22 days or left intact and females were ovariectomized at 3 months. Additional males castrated at 19-22 days and females ovariectomized at 3 months were implanted with estradiol benzoate (EB) from 3 to 5.5 months. After castration of the previously intact males at the age of 5.5 months, all subjects were tested beginning at 6.5 months for proceptivity (choice of a male versus a female in a T-maze) and receptivity (immobilization to a mounting male) following an injection of EB. EB administered during development significantly defeminized proceptivity and receptivity in both sexes. The decrease in proceptivity was more pronounced in males than in females and was more pronounced than the decrease in receptivity, as if differentiation ends earlier for proceptivity than for receptivity; the decrease in receptivity was more pronounced in females. To see whether the capacity to display female-typical behavior is a function of time since castration, we castrated additional males at 4 months and tested for receptivity 9 days later following an injection of EB, then tested again with the other subjects at 6.5 months. The proceptivity and receptivity scores for males castrated at 4 months fell between those for intact males and males castrated at 3 weeks, and thus these animals were not completely defeminized. They were more receptive at 6.5 months than at 4 months, but the difference was not significant. These results indicate that in pigs estradiol defeminizes both receptive and proceptive behavior and that this defeminization can occur relatively late in development.  相似文献

In many species of passerine songbirds, males learn their song during defined periods of life. Female song in often reduced or absent, as are the brain regions controlling song. Sexual differences in the brain arise because of the action of sex steroids, which trigger the formation of some neural pathways (especially the pathway from the higher vocal center to the robust nucleus) and prevent the atrophy of others in males. These neural changes occur during periods of developmental song learning and can recur during periods of learning in adult birds. The process of learning is correlated with major increases or decreases in the number of neurons in specific neuronal populations, suggesting that the formation or loss of specific neural pathways regulates the ability to learn. Species differences in sexual differentiation and learning allow informative cross-species comparisons of neural structure and behavior. © 1992 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.  相似文献

Components of the Wnt signaling pathway are expressed in a tightly regulated and spatially specific manner during development of the forebrain, and Wnts are key regulators of regional forebrain identity. Wnt signaling from the cortical hem regulates the expansion and cell-type specification of the adjacent neuroepithelium and, in conjunction with Bmp, Fgf, and Shh signaling, controls dorsal-ventral forebrain patterning. Subsequently, Wnt signaling dynamically regulates the behavior of cortical progenitor cells, initially promoting the expansion of radial glia progenitor cells and later inducing neurogenesis by promoting terminal differentiation of intermediate progenitor cells. A role for Wnt signaling in cell-type specification has also been proposed.  相似文献

With a microtubule-based axoneme supporting its plasma membrane-ensheathed projection from the basal body of almost all cell types in the human body, and present in only one copy per cell, the primary cilium can be considered an organelle sui generis. Although it was first observed and recorded in histological studies from the late 19th century, the tiny structure was essentially forgotten for many decades. In the past ten years, however, scientists have turned their eyes once again upon primary cilia and realized that they are very important for the development of almost all organs in the mammalian body, especially those dependent upon the signaling from members Hedgehog family, such as Indian and Sonic hedgehog. In this review, we outline the roles that primary cilia play in forebrain development, not just in the crucial transduction of Sonic hedgehog signaling, but also new results showing that cilia are important for cell cycle progression in proliferating neural precursors. We will focus upon cerebral cortex development but will also discuss the importance of cilia for the embryonic hippocampus, olfactory bulb, and diencephalon.  相似文献

Sexual conflict is predicted to generate more rapid reproductive isolation between larger populations. While there is some empirical support for this, the data are inconsistent and, additionally, there has been criticism of some of the evidence. Here we reanalyse two experimental-evolution datasets using an isolation index widely applied in the speciation literature. We find evidence for reproductive isolation through sexual conflict in Sepsis cynipsea, but not in Drosophila melanogaster, and this occurred to a greater degree in larger populations, which is consistent with previous findings.  相似文献

To study early events in the central nervous system (CNS) cholinergic development, cells from rat basal fore brain tissue were placed in culture at an age when neurogenesis in vivo is still active [embryonic day (E) 15]. The rapid mortality of these cells in defined medium, with 50% mortality after 5–10 h, was blocked completely by soluble proteins from the olfactory bulb (a basal forebrain target), extending earlier observations (Lambert, Megerian, Garden, and Klein, 1988). Treated cultures were capable of incorporating thymidine into DNA, and most cells incorporating 3H-thymidine (>90%) also stained positive for neurofilament, confirming neuronal proliferation in the supplemented cultures. A small percentage of 3H-thymidine labelled cells were glial fibrillary acidic protein (GFAP) positive, but growth factors that support astroglial proliferation [epidermal growth factor (EGF), basic fibroblast growth factor (bFGF), and insulin-like growth factor (IGF-1)] were not sufficient for neuronal support. After 5 culture days with supplemented medium, almost 50% of the cells showed choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunofluorescence. The cholinergic neurons typically formed clusters separate from noncholinergic cells. These mature cultures did not develop if young cultures were treated with aphidicolin to block DNA synthesis. The data show that cultures of very young rat basal forebrain cells can be neurogenic, giving rise to abundant cholinergic neurons, and that early cell proliferation is essential for long-term culture survival.  相似文献

The segment polarity geneswingless (wg) andengrailed (en) have been shown to play important roles in pattern formation at different stages ofDrosophila development in the thoracic imaginai discs. We have studied the patterns of expression of these genes in genital discs from wild type larvae, pupae and pharate adults and also from hetero-allelic mutant combinations of these genes. Our results suggest that these genes play vital roles in the normal development and differentiation of genital discs and gonads. In the absence of normalwg oren functions, the flies showed a complete lack of internal accessory reproductive organs and specific defects in the external genitalia. In addition, the testes in such males were small, rounded and with an abnormal cellular organization, although the ovaries in females appeared normal. Temperature shift experiments using the conditional mutant allele ofwg, (wg IL-114 ) indicated a requirement ofwg signaling from second instar onwards for normal development and differentiation of the accessory reproductive organs. Using a heat-shock allele (Hs-wg) we also show that the spatially regulated expression ofwg as a pre-requisite for normal development and differentiation. Based on the expression patterns ofen andhedgehog (hh) we suggest that even in the genital disc development and differentiation the action ofen is mediated throughhh.  相似文献

The disease holoprosencephaly is the basis of the most common structural anomaly of the developing forebrain in humans. Numerous teratogens when administered during early gastrulation, have been associated with this condition. Recent studies have characterized molecules expressed in the prechordal plate which are critical for normal brain formation. Body weight of Large White gilts was greater at birth, weaning, 5 months of age and at slaughter; however, Meishan gilts reached puberty at an earlier age (91 +/- 2 vs 192 +/- 3 days, P less than 0.01), had longer periods of oestrus (60 +/- 2 vs 49 +/- 2 h, P less than 0.01) and experienced more oestrous cycles (7 +/- 0.4 vs 4 +/- 0.4, P less than 0.01) before slaughter. The interoestrous interval was longer (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts (19.8 +/- 0.2 vs 19.1 +/- 0.2 days). At slaughter, uterine length (P less than 0.05), uterine weight, width of uterine horns, endometrial surface area, endometrial weight and percentage of uterine weight represented by endometrium was greater (P less than 0.01) for Large White gilts. However, breed differences were not significant when slaughter weight was included in analyses as a covariate. This indicated that development of the reproductive tract was proportionate to body weight at slaughter for each breed. When body weight at slaughter was included as a covariate, effects of day of the oestrous cycle and pregnancy on uterine width, uterine weight, endometrial surface area and endometrial weight were detected (P less than 0.01) and for uterine length there was a day-by-status interaction (P less than 0.01). Total number of CL (P less than 0.05) and total ovarian weight (P less than 0.05) were also greater for Large White gilts independent of body weight at slaughter. There were more CL in left ovaries for Meishan (8.1 +/- 0.4 vs 6.6 +/- 0.4) and Large White (8.4 +/- 0.4 vs 7.9 +/- 0.5) gilts.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Mating behavior in simultaneously hermaphroditic seabasses hasbeen often cited as an example of cooperation among unrelatedconspecifics. The predominant mating behavior in this groupinvolves egg trading, where individuals reciprocally fertilizeparcels of eggs from a partner. Egg trading has been suggestedas a good example of a tit-for-tat cooperative mating strategy.Although simultaneous hermaphroditic fishes are often held upas strong examples of cooperation in mating behavior, a closerexamination reveals significant sexual selection and sexualconflict between male and female roles among individuals. Inthe 7 species where data exist, there is a significant increasein male reproductive success with individual size, and in allbut 1 species success through male function increases fasterthan reproductive success through female function. Despite thismale-size advantage in simultaneous hermaphrodites, most speciesmaintain their hermaphroditism for their entire life, and theincreased male allocation while engaging in biased forms ofreciprocation appear to increase the evolutionary stabilityof hermaphroditism in these species. Thus, egg-trading behavioris probably more complicated than was initially recognized,with individuals releasing different numbers of eggs in spawns,spawning at different rates as males and females, and partitioningmale effort between pair and alternative mating tactics. Thedepartures from equal reciprocity can probably be best understoodby including aspects of traditional mating-system theory, withindividuals increasing male mating success through a varietyof behavioral tactics.  相似文献

As in all organogenetic studies, sex differentiation implies three fields of research: the identification of macsomalecular markers specific for stamens or carpels }expression program); the analysis of the signals (such as phytohormones{ inducing them: and finally the knowledge of the regulator genes (sex detsrmination genes).
In dioecious plants, sex determination (male and female genes or combinations of heterochromosomes) occurs at the fertilization stage. These regulators probably act early by means of inducers; their action is perceptible mainly when reproductive organs develop, and the existence of target cells able to respond to the inductive message is obvious. Experimental control of sex expression by phytohormones leads to the repression of the normal organogenetic program (induced by the presence of the sex genes) arrd to the induction of the opposite program (normally incompatible with these genes).
Analogous mechanisms occur in monoecious plants, but here the male program is always expressed before the female one. Experimental control of sex expression suggests that the successive induction of first male and then the female program results from inverse gradients of male and female signals. Sex differentiation studies of monaeciousness are more difficult than studies on dioeciousness since, in all the cells. not only male and female programs co-exist as in dioeciousness, but also male and female sex penes and signals.
The present model has been tested in the dioecious Mercurialisannua (2n = 16) and some other species, and the results that have been established are described.  相似文献

The seasonality, size, age, colour phases and sexual dimorphism of 13 reproductive classes of hogfish Lachnolaimus maximus are described. Analysis of histological sections of gonads ( n = 1662) confirmed earlier conclusions that L. maximus is a monandric, protogynous hermaphrodite. Sex change was initiated at the end of the spawning season and over a broad range of sizes and ages. It occurred after a functional female phase (postmaturation) and proceeded more slowly (months) than previously believed. Eventually all individuals changed sex to a terminal male phase. Females were batch spawners, spawning as often as every day during winter and spring. There was no evidence of precocious sperm crypts in active females, sperm competition or other alternative male sexual strategies. Mating has been reported elsewhere to be haremic. The sexual development of L. maximus appears to be adaptive in terms of Ghiselin's size-advantage model, which links monandric protogyny and polygyny. The slow rate of sex change, however, poses problems when fishing pressure is high because harvest of a single male has the potential to reduce the reproductive output of an entire harem.  相似文献

Spores of a minus strain of Mucor mucedo (Bref.) were treated with 1-methyl-[3-nitro]-1-nitro-soguanidine and mutants were isolated either by testing for zygophore induction with externally supplied trisporic acids (TA) or by mating with wild type plus colonies. Mutants were found defective (Tar?) or temperature-sensitive (Tar-Ts) in their reaction towards trisporic acids, blocked or temperature-sensitive in their mating with plus strain (Mat? or Mat-Ts) or temperature-sensitive in zygospore development (Zyg-Ts). The inability to react against externally supplied trisporic acids was not necessarily coupled with an inability to mate with plus strain (phenotype Tar? Mat+). This indicated that the diffusion and uptake of trisporic acids is not a necessary prerequisite to the sexual interaction of Mucor mating types.  相似文献

The study of pain development has come into its own. Reaping the rewards of years of developmental and molecular biology, it has now become possible to translate fundamental knowledge of signalling pathways and synaptic physiology into a better understanding of infant pain. Research has cast new light on the physiological and pharmacological processes that shape the newborn pain response, which will help us to understand early pain behaviour and to design better treatments. Furthermore, it has shown how developing pain circuitry depends on non-noxious sensory activity in the healthy newborn, and how early injury can permanently alter pain processing.  相似文献

The present work reviews the latest information on the cellular, molecular and physiological aspects of sexual determination and differentiation in teleost fish. The group exhibits a large variety of mechanisms of sexual determination. These may be genetic, or depend on environmental conditions such as temperature, pH, and social factors, all of which can influence the proportion of the sexes. Additionally, sex steroids play an important role in the regulation of sexual differentiation. The patterns of gonadal sexual differentiation are diverse, and species may be hermaphroditic or gonochoristic, some of the latter displaying juvenile hermaphroditism. In recent years, several genes involved in the sexual determination and differentiation pathways in vertebrates, particularly in mammals, have also been characterized in teleosts. Conserved as well as diversified functions have been proposed.  相似文献
