The South American curculionid Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel) is an important pest of pastures in New Zealand. Population census data were gathered for L. bonariensis in northern New Zealand pastures during 1980-1983 in the absence of parasitism and again in 1991-1996 after the introduction and establishment of the braconid parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae Loan as a biological control agent. M. hyperodae achieved high rates of parasitism, with 75-90% of overwintering L. bonariensis parasitized within 3 yr of the parasitoid establishing at a site. Multistratum analysis of variance (ANOVA), with allowance for variation in host plant resource (numbers of Neotyphodium-free grass tillers), indicated reduction in the abundance of L. bonariensis life stages in the early part of life cycle. Although providing evidence for suppression of L. bonariensis, these analyses indicated the regulatory role of M. hyperodae was weak because L. bonariensis populations continued to exhibit marked intergenerational variability in abundance. Analyses of life tables indicated larval + pupal survival contributed most to intergenerational changes in abundance, irrespective of presence or absence of M. hyperodae. However, the density dependence of the stage survivals was modified in the presence of the parasitoid, with loss of density-dependent mortality in overwintering adults and increased density dependence in population natality. Regression analyses indicated dual contribution of parasitism and host plant resource to regulation of population natality and population trend in L. bonariensis. We conclude that M. hyperodae is a useful adjunct to host plant resistance in reducing the economic status of L. bonariensis populations in northern New Zealand pastures.  相似文献

To minimize the risk that introduced entomophagous biological control agents may pose to native and beneficial insect species, identification of likely nontarget hosts is required before release is considered. A novel technique, in which the parasitoid acts as a vector of a bacterium pathogenic to potential hosts, has been used as an indicator of parasitoid ovipositional activity even when subsequent development of the parasitoid egg within the 'host' does not occur. In this study the application of this technique was examined in relation to container type using the facultative bacterium Serratia marcescens in association with the parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae. Two permissive host weevil species, Listronotus bonariensis and Irenimus aequalis , were exposed for 72 h to M. hyperodae treated with either distilled water or S. marcescens suspension in either Petri dishes or cages. Weevil septicaemia was significantly higher when exposed to S. marcescens -treated parasitoids than water-treated parasitoids (P < 0.001), with no difference in mortality between weevil species. Septicaemia was significantly higher in the Petri dishes than in cages (P < 0.001). This was attributed to improved survival of S. marcescens in the Petri dishes compared with cages. Total parasitoid activity (combined septicaemia and parasitism) for I. aequalis was higher in Petri dishes than in cages and far exceeded field parasitism. Petri dishes provide an environment for constant interaction between parasitoid and target host and thereby provide a conservative indication of parasitoid host range. However, cages may be more suitable to conduct host range studies because the ability to manipulate the environment. Potential refinements to the parasitoid-bacteria technique include methodology that enhances viability of the bacterium under cage conditions.  相似文献

We studied conspecific host discrimination and oviposition behavior of Diaschasmimorpha longicaudata (Ashmead), in third instar Anastrepha ludens (Loew) under laboratory conditions. The complete process of oviposition in D. longicaudata required an average of 29±11.7 s (Mean±SE), during which time the female remained completely immobile. This contrasts with attempts to oviposit for lesser durations (2-4 s), during which the female constantly moved her antennae and abdomen. In order to determine the host discrimination ability of this species (i.e., the capacity to distinguish between parasitized and non-parasitized hosts), third-instar A. ludens non-parasitized or parasitized 24 h earlier, were exposed simultaneously to individual female wasps with or without previous oviposition experience. An identical test was performed using larvae parasitized 48 h earlier. Both types of females showed a similar behavioral pattern of oviposition, but with significant differences in the number of eggs laid in parasitized and non-parasitized larvae. Experienced females showed reduced incidence of oviposition in parasitized larvae as well as a greater number of probes that did not lead to parasitism (rejection), although this difference was only significant in the 24-h test. This suggests that the host discrimination capacity of this parasitoid is innate and that previous oviposition experience increases the discrimination ability of females.  相似文献

A laboratory study of aspects of parasitoid host acceptance, suitability and physiological regulation in natural and novel host species was carried out to investigate the degree of variability encountered with different hosts and to determine the value of such observations in host range determination. The parasitoid Microctonus aethiopoides Loan was exposed to a natural host, Sitona discoideus Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and three novel hosts, the New Zealand native Nicaeana cervina Broun, the introduced weed biological control agent Rhinocyllus conicus (Froehlich), and a congeneric pest species, Sitona lepidus Gyllenhal (all Coleoptera: Curculionidae). Per cent parasitism of these species was 54%, 43%, 39% and 0%, respectively. The results indicated that for both S. discoideus and R. conicus more males than females were parasitized (69% cf. 45%, and 49% cf. 32% respectively) but host size was not a significant factor. Overall, superparasitism was recorded in about 29% of parasitized weevils and there was evidence that host discrimination to avoid superparasitism occurred in the natural host. Conversely, superparasitism occurred more frequently than would be expected in N. cervina (42%) coupled with higher survival of larvae in superparasitized hosts in this species. The frequency distribution of attack of R. conicus by M. aethiopoides was not different from random. Parasitoid development was more rapid in the natural host, S. discoideus, and parasitoid size was positively correlated with host size. There was a strong positive relationship between parasitoid larval survival and the presence of teratocytes in all hosts. Host fecundity and fertility were reduced by parasitism for most species, and in some cases, by exposure to parasitoids in the absence of detectable parasitism. It was concluded that laboratory observations can provide useful information on the compatibility between host and parasitoid which can complement traditional host range tests to predict field host range.  相似文献

The Argentine stem weevil (Listronotus bonariensis) was an economically important pest in New Zealand pastures until the release of the parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae. This contribution uses historical data to investigate the regulation of the pest populations prior to, and somewhat during, the establishment of this parasitoid in dryland Canterbury, New Zealand. Thus, a significant goal of this study is to provide an L. bonariensis population dynamics baseline for any future work that aims to analyse the full effects of M. hyperodae on the weevil, now that equilibrium with the weevil host has been reached.The population dynamics of L. bonariensis, based on a life-table approach, were investigated using data collected regularly for eight years from populations in Canterbury, New Zealand. The key factor affecting end-of-season L. bonariensis density was found to be variation in second generation fourth instar prepupal and pupal mortality. This may have been caused by arrested development and ongoing mortality resulting from the onset of cooler autumnal conditions.A compensatory response was found in recruitment to the second summer weevil generation, whereby the realised fecundity of the emergent first summer generation of weevils was found to be negatively related to the density of adult weevils per ryegrass tiller. This is the first time that this has been found via long-term population analysis of L. bonariensis, although indications of this have been found elsewhere in caging, pot and small plot experiments.In this study, the effect of the parasitoid biocontrol agent Microctonus hyperodae on L. bonariensis population dynamics was unclear, as the analysis covered a period when the parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae was introduced and still establishing. It does, however, raise important questions for future analysis in terms of the interaction between parasitism and unrealised fecundity.The results in this contribution also highlighted regional differences. Overwintering mortality of adult weevils in Canterbury was constant between years, whilst earlier studies in the North Island Waikato region indicated this mortality was density dependent. In addition, the availability of tillers in endophyte-free ryegrass pastures in Canterbury had no influence on egg and early-instar larval survival, which contrasts with the finding from endophytic Waikato pastures.  相似文献

A laboratory study was performed to examine the importance of the parasitoid egg in host discrimination by Cephalonomia stephanoderis Betrem (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae), an ectoparasitoid of the coVee berry borer, Hypothenemus hampei (Coleoptera: Scolytidae). C. stephanoderis was able to distinguish between parasitized and unparasitized hosts, and preferred to oviposit on the latter. This discriminative ability appeared to be innate, not learned. W hen the parasitoid egg was removed artificially the host was accepted for parasitism once more, suggesting that the presence of the egg is the most important factor in host discrimination. However, it was not possible to exclude the eVect of a chemical marker present either on or within the host, and/or associated with the presence of the parasitoid egg.  相似文献

Insect parasitoids use host kairomone to detect their hosts. However, in parasitoid species that attack adult hosts, the mobility of adult insect may mean that the host can move away for kairomone sources. The effect of Listronotus oregonensis LeConte (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) adult sex, feces and movement on host selection behavior by Microctonus’’ hyperodae Loan (Hymenoptera: Braconidae; Euphorinae) females was evaluated in the laboratory. We hypothesized that, in addition of using host kairomones, parasitoids of adult stage should use host movement for host selection. The sex of L. oregonensis did not affect the host selection behavior of M. hyperodae. However, host feces decreased the number of weevil antennations done by M. hyperodae. Microctonus hyperodae stopped less frequently near immobile L. oregonensis than near walking ones and these latter were frequently pursued by M. hyperodae. Host movement was the stimulus that elicited oviposition by M. hyperodae. The adaptive implications of these results are discussed.  相似文献

Field enclosure and laboratory cage experiments designed to measure the impact of the parasitoid Microctonus hyperodae Loan on the Argentine stem weevil, Listronotus bonariensis (Kuschel) have shown that under high parasitoid pressure, there is significant weevil mortality without obvious parasitism. Parasitoid-exposed, but unparasitized portions of caged populations died at rates significantly higher than both the parasitized weevils from the same population and the unexposed controls. Unexpectedly, parasitized weevils had the lowest mortality rates (prior to larval parasitoid emergence). It was of ecological significance that this mortality effect was detected under field conditions using several years of empirically-collected population dynamics data. Under both field and laboratory conditions this mortality was found to occur within shorter time intervals than that required for full parasitoid larval development; thus it could not be attributed to the mortality that occurs after the emergence of prepupal parasitoids. The mechanism for this mortality remains undetermined, although it could possibly be linked to pseudoparasitism.  相似文献

Intraspecific host discrimination is widespread in solitary parasitoids whose adult females forage for and evaluate host suitability, whereas interspecific discrimination is less common. In some parasitoid species, mostly Diptera and Coleoptera, the larva performs the last step of host searching. It has been suggested that host discrimination will rarely occur in such host-seeking larvae because their low mobility results in a low host encounter rate. We determined the extent to which the larvae of Aleochara bilineata Gyllenhal (Coleoptera: Staphylinidae), a solitary parasitoid of aggregated Diptera pupae: (1) discriminated between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by conspecifics; (2) used semiochemical cues to discriminate; (3) were influenced by life expectancy, presence of conspecifics and host availability in their host acceptance decision; and the extent to which (4) A. bilineata and A. bipustulata L., a species exploiting the same hosts and occurring sympatrically, showed interspecific host discrimination. A. bilineata larvae were able to discriminate between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by conspecifics in a choice experiment. Such behavior has never previously been described for a coleopteran parasitoid or for a parasitoid species whose larvae perform host searching. Host discrimination in this species was not based on the presence of visual or tactile cues (e.g., entrance holes) but rather on chemical cues. The life expectancy of A. bilineata larvae was significantly shorter in the presence than in absence of hosts, and older larvae had lower parasitism success than young larvae in a 24-h experiment. However, the host acceptance decision of A. bilineata larvae was not influenced by larval age or the presence of conspecifics when the ratio of hosts per larva was greater than or equal to 1. When hosts were scarce, the degree of superparasitism increased significantly with the number of foraging conspecifics and the age of the larvae. Both species of Aleochara showed intra- and interspecific host discrimination in a choice experiment. In contrast to A. bipustulata, A. bilineata larvae more frequently parasitized hosts parasitized by A. bipustulata than those parasitized by conspecifics. Laboratory experiments were conducted to examine the effect of ryegrass infection by the endophytic fungusAcremonium loliiLatch, Christensen and Samuels onMicroctonus hyperodaeLoan, a parasitoid ofListronotus bonariensis(Kuschel). Progression of parasitoids through the larval instar stages was shown to depend on adequate nutrition of the weevil host. Compared to confinement on endophyte-free ryegrass, parasitized weevils held on nonpreferred diets comprising leaf segments from endophyte-infected ryegrass and switchgrass contained parasitoid larvae with retarded development. Similarly, development of parasitoid larvae was retarded in hosts feeding on artificial diet containing diterpenes and alkaloids ofA. loliiorigin. Several diterpenes incorporated into the diet reduced survival of the parasitoid larvae. Attack rate of parasitoids was reduced when the quality of potential host weevils was compromised by confinement on nonpreferredA. lolii-infected ryegrass or without food for 14 days.  相似文献

Summary Host discrimination, i.e. the ability to distinguish unparasitized hosts from parasitized ones, and to reject the latter for egg laying is present in many parasitic wasp species. This property is classically considered as an example of contest competition, and is supposed to have a number of functions. However, different species do not react to each other's marks and lay eggs in hosts parasitized by the other species. Apparently the marks used for recognition are specific.Multiparasitization is the best strategy when hosts are scarce and the egg supplies of the parasitoids are not limited. Interspecific host discrimination is not an ESS.Superparasitization within one species would have selective advantage if the number of unparasitized hosts is small and the wasp has a reasonable chance to lay her egg in a host that is not parasitized by herself, and if the chance for her offspring to survive the competitive battle with the first parasitoid larva is not too small. This is shown to be the case.However, marks are not individual and wasps cannot distinguish hosts parasitized by themselves from those parasitized by others. The hypothesis is tested that the egg laying strategy (i.e. the decision to superparasitize) of wasps is dependent on the number of conspecifics that is searching simultaneously for hosts, since this determines the chance that a parasitized host encountered by a wasp is parasitized by herself.It is shown that host discrimination cannot be regarded as a case of contest competition. Other aspects of superparasitization, related to interference and population regulation, sex allocation and encapsulation are briefly discussed.  相似文献

Intraspecific host discrimination is frequently found in solitary parasitoids, but interspecific host discrimination, where female parasitoids recognize hosts already parasitized by females of other species, is rare. This particular behaviour appears to be adaptive only under specific circumstances. In this paper, we quantified intraspecific host discrimination in Anaphes n. sp. (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), an endoparasitoid of the eggs of Listronotus oregonensis (LeConte) (Coleoptera: Curculionidae) and interspecific host discrimination toward eggs parasitized by Anaphes sordidatus (Girault), a sympatric species competing for the same resource in similar habitats. To examine host discrimination, choice experiments were used where the females had to choose between different categories of eggs (unparasitized, parasitized by Anaphes n. sp. or A. sordidatus). Superparasitism and multiparasitism were avoided in experiments where the female had a choice between unparasitized hosts and hosts parasitized by the same female, by a conspecific or by a female A. sordidatus. When all hosts available were parasitized, conspecific superparasitism occurred more often than self-superparasitism or multiparasitism. These results indicated that females Anaphes n. sp. were capable of self-, conspecific and interspecific discrimination. Self-discrimination followed recognition of an external marking while interspecific discrimination occurred mostly after insertion of the ovipositor. Interspecific discrimination could result from the recent speciation of these species and could be associated with a genotypic discrimination. This behavior appears to be adaptive because of the competition for common hosts between the two parasitoid species.  相似文献

Abstract:  Interspecific competition between Diadegma semiclausum and Cotesia plutellae was investigated at 25°C in the laboratory, by exposing the third instar larvae of the diamondback moth, Plutella xylostella to both species together, either species alone or by exposing the host larvae already parasitized by one species, at different intervals, to the other. When host larvae were exposed simultaneously to two species in one arena, parasitism rates of the host by each species were not reduced by the presence of the other species; joint parasitism rate by two species was not significantly higher than that by either parasitoid alone. Both parasitoids could lay eggs into the host larvae which had previously been parasitized by the other species, leading to the occurrence of multiparasitized hosts. When host larvae were parasitized first by D. semiclausum and then being followed within 1–2 h by exposing to C. plutellae , or vice versa, ensuing parasitoid cocoons from the multiparasitized host larvae were nearly all C. plutellae . When host larvae were parasitized initially by C. plutellae and then being followed by D. semiclausum two or more days later, all parasitoids ensued from the multiparasitized hosts were C. plutellae . In contrast, when host larvae were parasitized initially by D. semiclausum and then being followed by C. plutellae two or more days later, most host larvae could not survive to prepupae and most of the ensuing parasitoid adults from the surviving hosts were D. semiclausum . Dissections of host larvae at various time intervals after parasitization by the two parasitoids showed that development of both parasitoids in multiparasitized hosts were somewhat arrested, and that the first instar larvae of C. plutellae could initiate a physical attack on the larvae of D. semiclausum and remove the latter.  相似文献

在室内25℃下,以菜蛾3龄初幼虫作寄主,研究了菜蛾盘绒茧蜂Cotesia plutellae和半闭弯尾姬蜂Diadegma semiclausum的种间竞争。当寄主供2种蜂同时产卵寄生时,2种蜂各自的寄生率与其单独寄生时无显著差异,合计寄生率比一种蜂单独存在时有所提高,但差异不显著。2种蜂均能产卵寄生已被另一种蜂寄生了的寄主幼虫。当寄主被2种蜂寄生的间隔时间很短(少于10 h)时,所育出的蜂绝大部分(80%以上)为绒茧蜂;当寄主先被绒茧蜂寄生,并饲养2天以上再供弯尾姬蜂寄生时,所育出的全为绒茧蜂;当寄主先被弯尾姬蜂寄生,并饲养2天以上再供绒茧蜂寄生时,寄主幼虫绝大部分不能存活,只有少部分能育出寄生蜂,且多为弯尾姬蜂。当2种蜂的幼虫存在于同一寄主体内时,2种蜂的发育均受到另一种蜂的抑制;绒茧蜂1龄幼虫具有物理攻击能力,能将弯尾姬蜂卵或幼虫致死。这些结果表明,菜蛾盘绒茧蜂与半闭弯尾姬蜂在同一寄主中发育时,前者具有明显的竞争优势。  相似文献

High titers of juvenile hormone (JH) maintain developmental arrest in Manduca sexta larvae parasitized by Cotesia congregata. Parasitized hosts exhibit up to 9.5 times greater amounts of total hemolymph JH (from 0.6±0.09 to 2.51±0.43 ng/ml) compared to non-parasitized controls. Elevated titers are observed throughout the fifth instar, even beyond egression of the parasitoids on day 5. GC–MS analysis revealed that in hemolymph of unparasitized control larvae, JH I is the major homolog and levels of JH III are negligible; in parasitized individuals the amounts of JH I, II, and III rise, and JH III predominates. Neck ligation ensured separation of M. sexta’s corpora allata from the posterior section, which contained most of the parasitoids in the infected insects. When the posterior region was sampled, JHs were not detected in the non-parasitzed larvae, but in those parasitized, JH III was found (1.98±0.29 ng/ml, 24 h post-ligation). JH III was the only homolog produced and secreted by the parasitoid in in vitro culture. This is the first report stating that a parasitoid secretes JH III and may contribute, at least in part, to the circulating titer in the host hemocoel, concurrently promoting host production of JH I and II.  相似文献

Trichogramma evanescens West. (Hymenoptera: Trichogrammatidae) and Copidosoma desantisi Annecke & Mynhardt (Hymenoptera: Encyrtidae) are potential parasitoids of the potato tuber moth (PTM), Phthorimaea operculella (Zeller) (Lepidoptera: Gelechiidae) in Egypt. Discrimination of a parasitized host from an unparasitized host would prevent wasting of time, eggs and reduce competition with conspecifics or heterospecifics. Therefore, we evaluated interspecific host discrimination, multiparasitism and intrinsic competition between the two wasp species. In a choice test, females of T. evanescens showed high interspecific host discrimination only when they were offered 2-day-old C. desantisi parasitized and unparasitized PTM eggs. In contrast, C. desantisi showed high host discrimination and preferred unparasitized eggs to PTM eggs harboring 2-h- or 2-day-old T. evanescens’ eggs. We also evaluated the effect of different introduction sequences on the efficacy of the two wasps. Dissection data indicated that the two parasitoids had a negative impact on each other. There was a significant reduction in the total number of deposited eggs as well as total number of parasitized hosts by each parasitoid. Regarding the rearing experiment, the total number of T. evanescens-induced black eggs or C. desantisi formed mummies in combined treatments was significantly lower than in single parasitoid treatments (control). Moreover, C. desantisi was inferior and did not develop from any multiparasitized host regardless of oviposition order. It was suggested that combined release of the two wasps would not elevate rate of parasitism over that of single parasitoid treatments and competition between them would reduce their efficacy.  相似文献

Pauesia juniperorum has been selected as a potential agent for the biological control of Cinara cupressivora, an important introduced pest of conifers in Africa. As part of the pre-introductory assessment studies, selection of different host age categories for oviposition was studied in choice and no choice experiments. The duration of development and adult size of parasitoid progeny developing in different host age categories were compared. The effects of parasitism on survival and reproduction of five categories of the apterous morph of the host ranging in age from 3-15 days was also studied. The age of hosts had a significant influence on the degree with which different categories were parasitized. Host defensive behaviour, which increased with age, influenced the outcome of attempts by the parasitoid to oviposit. The effect was greater in older hosts, but in young hosts their small size was more important in enabling aphids to escape parasitism. The duration of development decreased while adult size increased with age of hosts. This demonstrated that fitness attributes of P. juniperorum were affected by larval ontogeny with older/larger hosts being more optimal. The ability of the parasitoid to exploit hosts of varying age was suggestive of a high degree of phenotypic plasticity which is potentially of adaptive value. Hosts parasitized before they were 9-days-old became mummies without reproducing. Those that were 9 days or older achieved part of their reproductive capacity before dying. Thus, the impact of P. juniperorum is markedly reduced when attacking older hosts.  相似文献

We investigate the effect of parasitoid phenology on host–parasitoid population cycles. Recent experimental research has shown that parasitized hosts can continue to interact with their unparasitized counterparts through competition. Parasitoid phenology, in particular the timing of emergence from the host, determines the duration of this competition. We construct a discrete-time host–parasitoid model in which within-generation dynamics associated with parasitoid timing is explicitly incorporated. We found that late-emerging parasitoids induce less severe, but more frequent, host outbreaks, independent of the choice of competition model. The competition experienced by the parasitized host reduces the parasitoids’ numerical response to changes in host numbers, preventing the ‘boom-bust’ dynamics associated with more efficient parasitoids. We tested our findings against experimental data for the forest tent caterpillar (Malacosoma disstria Hübner) system, where a large number of consecutive years at a high host density is synonymous with severe forest damage.  相似文献

The solitary parasitoids Aphidius erviHaliday (Hymenoptera: Aphidiidae) and Aphelinus asychisWalker (Hymenoptera: Aphelinidae) attacked but generally did not oviposit in pea aphids parasitized by the other species. Wasps selectively oviposited in unparasitized hosts when given a choice. Host discrimination depended on the recognition of internal cues. Females of A. asychiseither could not recognize or ignored A. ervi'sexternal host marking pheromone. Under most conditions, A. ervisurvived in superparasitized hosts, killing competing A. asychislarvae by physical attack and possibly physiological suppression. The outcome of larval competition was not affected by oviposition sequence or age difference between larvae; A. asychissurvived only when it had substantially completed larval development before the host was superparasitized by A. ervi.It is suggested that competition for host resources incurs a cost, for the winner in terms of reduced size or increased development time and for the loser in terms of lost progeny and searching time. Consequently, heterospecific host discrimination can be functional. Internal, and probably general, cues enable wasps to recognize and avoid oviposition in hosts already parasitized by an unrelated species.  相似文献

对寄生蜂 Opius concolor的学习行为在寄主识别中的作用进行了室内观察。在养虫笼中的寄生蜂与寄主的数量比高时(1∶0.9),无论“有寄生经验”的还是“无寄生经验”的寄生蜂的过寄生(在同一寄主中产≥2粒卵)的数量均高于寄生蜂在寄生蜂与寄主的数量比低的两种情况(1∶5,1∶10)。“有寄生经验”与“无寄生经验”寄生峰在寄生蜂与寄主的数量比高时(1∶0.9),其卵在寄主中的分布均不符合泊松分布。而在寄生蜂与寄主的数量比低时(1∶10),寄生蜂的卵在寄主中的分布均符合泊松分布。寄生蜂在寄生蜂与寄主的数量比居中时(1∶5),“有寄生经验”寄生蜂产的卵不符合油松分布,“无寄生经验”寄生蜂产的卵符合泊松分布。“自我过寄生”试验表明,“有寄生经验”与“无寄生经验”寄生蜂均有“自我过寄生”现象。  相似文献
