The reproductive potential of the peach-potato aphid (origin Gross-Lüsewitz) was studied at temperatures between 15° and 30° in constant temperature chambers. They were cultivated on Swede (Brassica napus spp. rapifera) which stood in Knop's nutrient under gauze cloches in petri dishes. The production of juvenile larvae and the mortality of the mothers was measured daily. The total of all larvae (including those which were dropped) and the total of larvae on the leaf were separately enumerated. The larvae on the leaf were designated as viable larvae. A population analysis using Birch's method showed a maximum value for the growth factor k (difference between birth and mortality rates) of 23° for the total of all larvae, and of 20° for the viable larvae (Fig. 6). The daily relative growth-ratio was at the same temperatures respectively 1.36 and 1.34 (Table IV). Optimum development of M. persicae on swedes occurs thus between 20° and 23°. The percentages of viable larvae which add to the net production of total larvae are 53, 61, 30, and 24 (Table III) at temperatures of 15, 20, 25, and 30° respectively. The average length of a generation was 18.5 days at 15° and less than 13 days at 28 to 30° (Fig. 5). The multiplication rate per generation was 38 at 15°, 48 at 20°, but only 5.5 at 30° (Fig. 4). The time of development from first-stage larva to adult was 12.5 days at 15°, 5 days at 28° and 6 days at 30° (Table VII). The upper limit, where a weak multiplication was still possible, was at 30°. It is concluded that in regions where such limiting temperatures occur during some part of the day, the temperature can be the major regulating factor of the insect populations.

Summary Clothed men at rest were exposed to two conditioning indoor environments (British, coolmoist; American, warm dry) for 45 minutes, and then to a cold environment (36°F) at moderate and high relative humidity (50% and 85%). The following measurements were taken: Temperature—skin, rectum and clothing gradients; nude body weight change and metabolism; subjective data. An attempt was made to measure clothing humidity gradients. The results showed that warm conditioning kept the clothing and skin at a higher temperature for a matter of 1 1/2 hours or more during cold exposure. The physiological value of such conditioning may be less marked under field conditions. No physiological objective or subjective differences of practical importance were found between the effects of still air at 36°F at moderate or high humidity, except for the finding of a slightly warmer skin of the chest at the high humidity. These results agree fairly well with those of other workers for nude men. From the date obtained there is no clear evidence that sorption heat of wool is an important factor in keeping the body warm at resting conditions. Under field conditions, sorption heat might be of still less value. There is no basis for the supposition that moist air is either a better thermal conductor or a more efficient heat convector than dry air. The physiological difference between dry cold and damp cold is not due to properties of humid air, but to the associated weather or climatic differences (solar radiation, cloud cover, wind, barometric pressure, etc.) and, to some extent, to the mode of living indoors. Data from physical models and from physiological experiments in climatic chambers cannot be directly transposed into the realities of weather and climate out of doors. With statistical design and analysis by J. Summary The temperature dependence of the oxygen isotope fractionation factor during respiration has been examined for two different microorganisms, namelyTorulopsis utilis andEscherichia coli K12 representing a yeast and a bacterium, respectively. The investigation covered a temperature range of 18° C, that is from 16° C to 34° C forT. utilis and from 19° C to 37° C forE. coli K12. Within this temperature range the fractionation factor ofT. utilis increases by 0.18; an insignificant change ( 10° C = 0.063;r = 0.067), whereas withE. coli K 12 an increase of 1.12; has been observed ( 10° C = 0.6;r = 0.55).  相似文献

Summary Alpha-globin genes were analyzed by the direct method of DNA mapping using - and -globin specific probes in a Thai family in which the proposita was an unusually mild °-thalessemia homozygote. °-Thalessemia was found to be segregating in the family, inherited from the proposita's father by one of her younger sisters. However, °-thatlessemia was not detected by this DNA mapping in the proposita. The mild homozygous °-thalessemia in this family may result from interactions of a non-deletion -thalassemia, a gene responsible for high proteolytic activity permitting more balanced globin-chain levels, or from an unusually active hemoglobin F production in the proposita.  相似文献

32 West African dwarf goats were exposed in respiration chambers to temperature treatments of 20, 25, 30, 35, 35, 35, 30, 25, 20°C. Each treatment lasted three days. 16 goats were kept in individual pens (I); the others in two group pens of eight animals each (G). During each treatment, heat production and activity were recorded continuously over 48 hours. In addition, feed and water intake, rectal temperature, skin temperature and respiratory rate were measured during each treatment.Compared to 20°C, at 35°C rectal temperature increased from 39.0°C to 39.9°C, respiratory rate from 30 to 260 times. min–1 and skin temperature from 37.1°C to 39.5°C. Hay intake decreased by 40%; concentrates (30 g. kg–0.75. d–1) were always completely consumed. Heat production was higher for the G animals at 20°C and higher for the I animals at 35°C. These differences in heat production between the two groups were reflected in differences in rectal and skin temperature and in respiratory rate but only very slightly in differences in hay intake.Tissue insulation was 0.014 K. m2. W–1 at 30°C and 35°C and 0.022 K. m2. W–1 at 20°C.It is concluded that the reactions of these dwarf goats to high ambient temperatures are not different in principle from those of other domestic ruminants and that they do not exhibit a specific suitability or unsuitability for ambient temperatures as prevailing in West Africa.  相似文献

Skin temperature from three recording sites (web dorsum and two digital sites) on one hand were compared over a 30-minute period during which room temperature was raised from 66 degrees to 80 degrees F causing skin temperatures to range from 78.5 degrees to 92.3 degrees F. The web dorsum remained significantly warmer than either digital site at the lowest skin temperatures; no significant inter-site differences were seen as skin temperature gradually increased. These findings imply that none of the three sites is more advantageous than the others when recording hand temperature values around or above 85 degrees F. However, at the lower levels of skin temperature, there is a "floor" below which the web dorsum is no longer a sensitive indicator. More generally, basic data of this type provide a necessary but often absent foundation for routine practice of clinical biofeedback.  相似文献

Summary An alkalophilic bacterium producing high amounts of the cell-associated -mannosidase and extracellular -mannanase was isolated from soil. The isolate (AM-001) that grew well in alkaline pH media was identified as a strain of Bacillus sp. The optimal cultivation temperature for enzyme production was 31° C for -mannosidase and 37° C for -mannanase with the optimum production medium composed of 1% konjac powder, 0.2% yeast extract, 2% Polypepton, 0.1% K2HPO4, 0.02% MgSO4 · 7H2O and 0.5% Na2CO3. Optimum pH and temperature for -mannosidase were 7.0 and 55° C, and for -mannanase were 9.0 and 65° C.  相似文献

Summary The effect of temperature on the nuclear envelope structure and the transport of total RNA and ribosomal subunits from nucleus to cytoplasm was examined inTetrahymena cells propagated at two different temperatures. Freeze-etch electron microscopy of cells grown at 23 and 18°C detects the emergence of smooth areas on the fracture faces of the nuclear membranes upon lowering the temperature below 15 and 12°C, respectively. Coincident with these freeze-etch changes, a discontinuous decrease is observed in the nucleocytoplasmic RNA-transport; this is probably not due to a cease in RNA-synthesis. Below the thermotropic discontinuity observed in the transport of total RNA in 18°-cells the nucleocytoplasmic transport of the small and large ribosomal subunits is equally retarded. Recent temperature studies on the endoplasmic reticulum membranes ofTetrahymena suggest that the freeze-etch changes in the nuclear membranes are induced by a thermotropic clustering of the membrane lipids. We conclude that this lipid clustering induces the permanent protein constituents in the nuclear envelope pore complexes to change from a relatively open into a relatively closed state thus causing the observed decrease in RNA-transport.  相似文献

Summary Bacteria with specific temperature sensitive lethal mutations in the gene for the subunit of RNA polymerase synthesize both the and subunits at a several fold higher rate at 42°C than wildtype cells relative to total protein. Synthesis of the and subunits proceeds at essentially the wild-type rates under these conditions. In contrast, a mutant with a temperature sensitive lethal mutation in the subunit gene synthesizes and at 42°C at slightly lower rates than wild-type, while and synthesis is not significantly altered. In all of the mutants at 42°C, newly synthesized subunits are stable, while the , and subunits are rapidly degraded. The apparent uncoupling of from subunit synthesis seen in the mutants at 42°C might suggest that the synthesis of these subunits is at least in part controlled by different mechanisms.  相似文献

A novel strain of Bacillus stearothermophilus was isolated from samples of a potato-processing industry. Compared to known -amylases from other B. stearothermophilus strains, the isolate was found to produce a highly thermostable -amylase. The half-time of inactivation of this -amylase was 5.1 h at 80°C and 2.4 h at 90°C. The temperature optimum for activity of the -amylase was 70°C; the pH optimum for activity was relatively low, in the range 5.5–6.0. -Amylase synthesis was regulated by induction and repression mechanisms. An inverse relationship was found between growth rate and -amylase production. Low starch concentrations and low growth temperatures were favourable for enzyme production by the organism. At the optimal temperature for growth, 65°C, the -amylase was a growth-associated enzyme. The optimal temperature for -amylase production, however, was 40°C, with -amylase increasing from 3.9 units (U)/ml to 143 U/ml when lowering the growth temperature from 65°C to 40°C. Maximal -amylase production in a batch fermentor run at 65°C was 102 U/ml, which was 26-fold higher than in erlenmeyer flasks at 65°C. The dissolved O2 concentration was found to be a critical factor in production of the -amylase.  相似文献

When imbibed at their optimum germination temperature of25°C, achenes of Tagetes minutaL.germinate over a period of 48 h. At a temperature of36°C, the achenes become thermoinhibited and do notgerminate. This elevated temperature does not harm the achenes, however, and assoon as the temperature is reduced below 35°C,germination occurs, but is spread over a reduced period of only 24h. The polypeptide patterns of germinating and thermoinhibitedachenes were compared, to test whether thermoinhibition is the result ofdifferential gene expression or repression. Ten polypeptides which weredifferentially expressed in thermoinhibited achenes were observed. Thesepolypeptides were all extremely specific to thermoinhibited achenes anddeclinedrapidly when the incubation temperature was decreased, in a manner whichcorrelated with the increase in germinability of the achenes. The tightlyregulated nature of the expression of these polypeptides suggests thatthermoinhibition in T. minuta may be under positivecontrol. These proteins may therefore result in the prevention of radicleemergence at unfavourable temperatures.  相似文献

Summary Monhystera denticulata Timm, a free-living nematode present in the aufwuchs assemblages of several marine macrophytes located in North Sea Harbor, Southampton, New York, was isolated from Zostera marina and established in laboratory culture in order to study the influences of temperature and salinity on its life history. Under experimental conditions, M. denticulata has a generation time (Measured as the time elapsing between the first egg depositions of consecutive generations) of 10–12 days at 25° C and 26 S, which represent optimal growth conditions in the laboratory. The organism has a generation time of 20 days at 25° C and 13, 17 days at 25° C and 39, 18 days at 15° C and 26, 36 days at 15° C and 13 and 34 days at 15° C and 39. As conditions vary from the optimum of 25° C and 26 S, a decrease in temperature of 10° C and an increase or decrease in salinity of 13 results in a doubling of the generation time. At 5° C the generation time is about 180–197 days.Assuming optimum conditions and average generation time, about 15 generations of M. denticulata could occur in North Sea Harbor during the year. The number of generations occurring in reality is probably less, however, due to the fact that the females deposit their eggs over a period of several days. This work was supported by National Science Foundation Grant GB-19245.Contribution No. 04 from the Institute of Oceanography, City University of New York.  相似文献

Thirty-two West African dwarf goats were exposed to temperature treatments: 20, 25, 30, 35, 35, 35, 30, 25, 20°C each lasting three days.Sixteen goats were kept in individual pens (I), the others in two group pens (G). Heat production (HP) and activity were recorded during 48 hours in each temperature treatment.Mean HP and ME intake were similar for G and I animals, but I animals had lower values than G animals at low chamber temperatures and higher values than G animals at high temperatures. Upper critical temperature was between 25°C and 30°C under an increasing T and between 30 and 35°C under a decreasing T. Adaptation of heat production and ME intake to a change in temperature of 5°C required at least six and possibly more than nine days.Diurnal variation in HP was large, up to 44% between extremes. This was largely due to variation in activity.  相似文献

Temperature dependencies were established for the egg-to-mummy and mummy-to-adult phases, for mummy mortality, and for parasitism of Aphidius ervi Haliday, Aphidius rhopalosiphi De Stefani-Perez, and Praon volucre (Haliday) (Hymenoptera, Aphidiidae), three parasitoids of Sitobion avenae (Fabricius) (Homoptera, Aphididae), at 8°C, 12°C, 16°C, 20°C, and 25°C on winter wheat (cv. Haven). A physiological model described temperature-dependent development over the full temperature range, whereas a linear model was fitted for data above 8°C and used to estimate the lower temperature thresholds and day-degrees (° D) required for development. The thresholds for A. ervi were 2.2°C for egg-mummy development and 6.6°C for mummy-adult development, those for A. rhopalosiphi were 4.5°C and 7.2°C, and those for P. volucre were 3.8°C and 5.5°C. The time to develop into mummies and adults differed significantly between the three species: A. ervi development into mummies required an average of 159 ° D, while development into adults took an average of 73 ° D. The corresponding average times required for A. rhopalosiphi and P. volucre to develop mummies were 124° D and 126° D, while their development into adults required an average of 70° D and 150° D, respectively. Mummy mortality was 25–35% at 8°C and less at the higher temperatures tested, but began to increase again at 25°C, showing a quadratic relationship between mortality and temperature. Parasitization was very low or, in the case of P. volucre, absent up to 12°C and thereafter increased with increasing temperature. The relationship between parasitization, recorded as percent aphids mummified, and temperature was linear at the temperatures tested and depended on species. A. ervisuperparasitized 11.1% aphids at 20°C and 16.6% aphids at 25°C, whereas superparasitism was low in A. rhopalosiphi and absent in P. volucre. From 16°C to 25°C the P. volucre sex ratio increased. For A. ervi and A. rhopalosiphi there was no trend with temperature, but at 20°C and 25°C it was close to even. Field data for 1996 and 1997 allowed for a comparison of actual and expected emergence of overwintering mummies. In both years, parasitoids were predicted to have emerged from overwintering mummies well in advance of the onset of aphid infestation, and more than a month earlier than the first parasitized aphids were found in winter wheat. Observations from trap plants in other crops supported the predictions of the models. Other factors that can affect biological control by cereal aphid parasitoids are discussed.  相似文献

Summary 1. Responses to 12 different combinations of constant levels of temperature and salinity were tested in the colonial athecate hydroidClava multicornis. Criteria measured were: (a) length and width of hydranth bodies, (b) number and length of tentacles and (c) rate of digestion.2. Test colonies were obtained by allowing single hydranths — cut off from an individual primary colony — to regenerate via asexual reproduction into new secondary colonies.3. In the resulting — genetically identical — material, all criteria tested vary as a function of the different environments offered.4. In 16, 24 and 32 S hydranth length reaches maximum values at 12°C, followed by 17° and then 22°C. With increasing salinity, hydranth length declines markedly at 12°C, while there is little or no decline at 17°C and a definite increase from 24 to 32 S at 22°C.5. Hydranth width varies less extensively; in general, it follows similar patterns as does hydranth length.6. Tentacle number per hydranth tends to be positively related to the size of the hydranth body; it decreases with increasing temperature. Salinity levels producing maximum tentacle numbers vary with temperature; maxima are found at 12°C in 16, at 17°C in 24 and at 22°C at 32 S.7. Tentacle length — although a more variable criterion — is affected similarly to tentacle number; it attains, however, relatively higher values at 17°C.8. In regard to the hydranth dimensions measured, combinations of low temperatures/low salinities and of high temperatures/high salinities tend to produce maximum values.9. Rate of digestion is taken here to be identical to the time elapsing between completed food intake and defecation. This time span is reduced with increasing temperature. In all temperature levels, digestion time is shortest in 32 S.10. The results presented above compare well with those obtained earlier under similar conditions onCordylophora caspia.11. It is assumed that the structural modifications of hydranths affect rate and efficiency of exchanges between organism and environment and may thus represent a means of metabolic adjustment.

Four methoxypolyethylene glycols (MPEG, molecular masses 350, 750, 2000 and 5000 Da), each activated by nitrophenyl chloroformate, were used to modify trypsin. Compared with the native trypsin, the MPEG-modified trypsin was more stable against temperature between 30°C and 70°C, longer chain of MPEG moiety corresponding to higher thermal stability. The T for the native and the modified trypsin (0.4 mg ml–1) was increased from 47°C to 66°C. The stabilization effect caused by MPEG modification was the result of decreasing in both the autolysis rate and the thermal denaturation rate. The thermodynamic analysis of the thermal denaturation process showed that the activation free energy (G*) of the native and the modified trypsin at 60°C was increased from 102.9 to 109.3 kJ mol–1; the activation enthalpy (H*) was increased from 57.4 to 86.9 kJ mol–1; the activation entropy (S*) was increased from –136 to –67 J molK–1. A possible explanation for the decreased thermal denaturation rate caused by MPEG modification was also discussed.  相似文献

Stable carbon (13C) and nitrogen (15N) isotopes were used to elucidate primary food sources and trophic relationships of organisms in Khung Krabaen Bay and adjacent offshore waters. The three separate sampling sites were mangroves, inner bay and offshore. The 13C values of mangrove leaves were –28.2 to –29.4, seagrass –10.5, macroalgae –14.9 to –18.2, plankton –20.0 to –21.8, benthic detritus –15.1 to –26.3, invertebrates –16.5 to –26.0, and fishes –13.4 to –26.3. The 15N values of mangrove leaves were 4.3 to 5.7, seagrass 4.3, macroalgae 2.2 to 4.4, plankton 5.7 to 6.4 , benthic detritus 5.1 to 5.3, invertebrates 7.2 to 12.2 , and fishes 6.3 to 15.9. The primary producers had distinct 13C values. The 13C values of animals collected from mangroves were more negative than those of animals collected far from shore. The primary carbon sources that support food webs clearly depended on location. The contribution of mangroves to food webs was confined only to mangroves, but a mixture of macroalgae and plankton was a major carbon source for organisms in the inner bay area. Offshore organisms clearly derived their carbon through the planktonic food web. The 15N values of consumers were enriched by 3–4 relative to their diets. The 15N data suggests that some of aquatic animals had capacity to change their feeding habits according to places and availability of foods and as a result, individuals of the same species could be assigned to different trophic levels at different places.  相似文献

Flash Heating on the Early Earth   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
It has been suggested that very large impact events ( 500 km diameter impactors) sterilized the surface of the young Earth by producing enough rock vapor to boil the oceans. Here, we consider surface heating due to smaller impactors, and demonstrate that surface temperatures conducive to organic synthesis resulted. In particular, we focus on the synthesis of thermal peptides. Previously, laboratory experiments have demonstrated that dry heating a mixture of amino acids containing excess Asp, Glu, or Lys to temperatures 170 °C for 2 hours yields polypeptides. It has been argued that such temperature conditions would not have been available on the early Earth. Here we demonstrate, by analogy with the K/T impact, that the requisite temperatures are achieved on sand surfaces during the atmospheric reentry of fine ejecta particles produced by impacts of bolides 10–20 km in diameter, assuming 1 – 100 PAL CO2. Impactors of this size struck the Earth with a frequency of 1 per 104 – 105 y at 4.2 Ga. Smaller bolides produced negligible global surface heating, whereas bolides > 30 km in diameter yielded solid surface temperatures > 1000 K , high enough to pyrolyze amino acids and other organic compounds. Thus, peptide formation would have occurred globally for a relatively narrow range of bolide sizes.  相似文献

Summary Goldfish (Carassius auratus L.) were acclimated to environmental temperatures of 3 °C, 18 °C and 31 °C for a period of three months. Cytochemical techniques were used to study the metabolism and myofibrillar ATPase activities of individual muscle fibres. Fish muscle is composed of three basic fibre types each with distinct contractile and metabolic characteristics. Cold acclimation resulted in a shift to a more aerobic type of metabolism, particularly in the red and pink fibres. In addition, environmental temperature was found to affect the size and relative distribution of the different fibre types in the myotome. The total number of pink and red fibres increased significantly with cold acclimation. Mechanisms of environmentally-induced adaptation of muscle fibre phenotype are discussed. In addition to changes in the metabolism and distribution of muscle-fibre types, biochemical studies have provided evidence for different kinetic forms of Mg2+Ca2+ myofibrillar ATPase at different environmental temperatures. Activities of myofibrillar ATPase assayed at 31 °C were 2–3 times higher in fish acclimated to the higher environmental temperature. Activation enthalpy (H ) of the ATPase was also signficantly reduced in the cold adapted enzyme. Reduction of H in the cold acclimated ATPase is thought to reduce the temperature sensitivity of the activation process thus partly compensating for the reduced cell temperature.  相似文献

The probit technique for analysis of subjective assessments of thermal sensation is described. It enables transition temperatures from any selected thermal sensation to the adjacent thermal sensation (e.g. from neutral to warm) to be identified. A transition temperature is defined as that temperature at which the maximum number of people would change their assessment from one thermal sensation to the next. Thus if a seven-point scale of thermal sensation is used, six transition temperatures are possible. Increments between them will not necessarily be identical, as would be assumed in a linear regression analysis. The method has been applied in three studies: laboratory studies by the Kansas State University, field studies in Port Moresby, and field studies in Melbourne. In the first it is shown that men are more thermally tolerant than women, in the second it is shown that in Port Moresby the preferred temperatures of Melanesians are 2°C higher than those of Caucasians and in the third it is suggested that subjects in Melbourne have a slightly lower preferred temperature than predicted by Fanger (1972).  相似文献
