Weight gain and intrinsic rate of population increase (rm) of Rhopalosiphum padi were measured on wheat plants given soil drenches of benomyl at various concentrations. Reduced weight gain occurred with concentrations as low as 3.125 ppm. Mortality of aphids significantly exceeded control mortality at 25 ppm, and no aphids survived concentrations above 50 ppm. Development time was extended at 12.5 ppm and above. Reductions in fecundity and rm became statistically significant by 25 ppm. Topical application of benomyl at 100 ppm or above increased aphid mortality, which reached 97% at 400 ppm. Weight gain of aphids was also reduced by topical application at 100 ppm. A factorial experiment showed absence of interaction between the effects on aphid weight of soil drench application to plants and topical application to aphids.  相似文献

The intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) is a common measurement in entomology to describe and evaluate the growth and adaptation of a population of arthropods to certain environmental conditions. Following the method of Birch, the rm is the solution of an exponential equation, which depends on the whole life cycle of each female and her survival time. A simplification of this equation was provided by Wyatt and White, which allows the study to be shortened as it does not depend on any survival times and only a part of the life cycle of the females. Therefore, this method has become quite popular among entomologists. As the rm is a population parameter, it lacks any variance and thus a valid statistical comparison of rms for different populations is not straightforward. Hence, many approaches include statistical misconceptions. We discuss those approaches, apply them to real data and demonstrate some drawbacks of them. Furthermore, we present an easy to implement and consistent method for the comparison of rms.  相似文献

Laboratory bioassays were conducted to evaluate the effects of spirodiclofen on life history and life-table parameters of two-spotted spider mite (Tetranychus urticae Koch) females treated at pre-ovipositional period with a series of acaricide concentrations starting with the concentration discriminative for eggs and immatures i.e. the lowest concentration that causes 100% mortality of those stages. After a 24 h exposure, the proportion of females that survived treatments was 0.71 (6 mg/l), 0.51 (12 mg/l), 0.41 (24 mg/l), 0.30 (48 mg/l) and 0.25 (96 mg/l). At the end of the trial, the survival rate of females treated with the lowest concentration was significantly lower than the survival rate of untreated females but it remained above that of females treated with higher concentrations. Total fecundity/fertility significantly decreased as concentrations of spirodiclofen increased. Viable eggs were laid by females treated with 6, 12 and 24 mg/l, and total fertility was reduced by 42, 84 and 97%, respectively. Compared with control, the gross fecundity/fertility of the treated females was significantly reduced throughout the trial, except in females treated with 6 mg/l. All concentrations caused a significant reduction in the net fecundity/fertility throughout the trial. The females treated with 12 mg/l had significantly reduced net reproductive rate (R 0 = 6.45), compared to females treated with 6 mg/l (R 0 = 23.35) and to untreated females (R 0 = 28.92); there was no significant difference between the last two treatments. The intrinsic rate of increase (r m ) and finite rate of increase (λ) were significantly reduced in treated females (r m = 0.141, λ = 1.156 and r m = 0.214, λ = 1.232; 12 and 6 mg/l, respectively), compared to control (r m = 0.251, λ = 1.276). The reduction was significantly greater in females treated with the highest concentration. As a result of the lowered r m , the doubling time in treated females was significantly extended. Sublethal effects of spirodiclofen and its impact on T. urticae management are discussed.  相似文献

On photoautotrophically grown, suspension-cultured cells of Chenopodium rubrum L. the electrical potential difference V mand the electrical resistance across plasmalemma and tonoplast have been measured using one or two intracellular micro-electrodes. In a mineral test-medium of 5.8 mM ionic strength V mvalues between 100 and 250 mV, 40% thereof between 170 and 200 mV, and a mean value (±S.E.M.) of 180.6±3.4 mV have been recorded. The average membrane input resistance R mwas 269±36 M, corresponding to an average membrane resistivity r mof 3.0 m2. V mand r mare sensitive to light, temperature, and addition of cyanide, suggesting the presence of an electrogenic hyperpolarizing ion pump, and are ascribed essentially to the plasmalemma. A hexose-specific saturable electrogenic membrane channel is identified through a decrease of V mand r mupon addition of hexoses. The hexoseconcentration-dependent depolarization V msaturates at 92 mV and returns half-saturating concentrations (apparent k mvalues) of 0.16 mM galactose, 0.28 mM glucose, and 0.48 mM fructose. The magnitude of V mand r mwell agrees with pertinent data from mesophyll cells in situ (where only V mdata are available) and from photoautotrophic lower plant cells. However, V mis markedly higher than reported for heterotrophically grown suspension cells of different higher plants (with which r mdata have not been reported so far). The performance of three aphid species, Aphis fubae, Acyrthosiphon pisum and Megoura viciae, was quantified on 22 taxonomically-selected host plant species from the genus Vicia (vetches), using intrinsic rate of increase (rm) k standard errors. A. pisum proved to be the most successful aphid species, both in terms of highest potential population increase and widest host range; M. viciae was least successful, with most restricted host range and low rm values on all but the closest relatives of Vicia faba. A wide range of antibiotic resistance was found within the genus, and host resistance to the three aphid species was found to be broadly related to classification patterns based on taxonomy and life-form. Analysis of the components of rm revealed that nymphal survival rates were the most significant factor limiting host colonisation, not pre-reproductive period which is the most important factor in cultivars of V. faba. The consequences of aphid polyphagy on performance are discussed.  相似文献

An approach commonly employed to assess the potential role of the enzyme polygalacturonase (PG, EC 3.2.1.15) in tomato fruit cell-wall pectin metabolism includes correlating levels of extractable PG with changes in specific characteristics of cell wall pectins, most notably solubility and molecular weight. Since information on these features of pectins is generally derived from analyses of subfractions of isolated cell wall, assurance of inactivation of the various isoforms of wall-associated PG is imperative. In the present study, cell wall prepared from ripe tomato (Lycopersicon esculentum Mill. cv. Rutgers) fruit was examined for the presence of active PG and for the ability of phenolic solvents to inactivate the enzyme. Using pectin solubility and Mr (relative molecular mass) changes as criteria for the presence of wall-associated PG activity, pectins from phenol-treated and nonphenol-treated (enzymically active) cell wall from ripe fruit incubated in 50 mM Na-acetate, 50 mM cyclohexanetrans-1,2-diamine tetraacetic acid (CDTA), pH 6.5 (outside the catalytic range of PG), were of similar Mr and exhibited no change in size with incubation time. Wall prepared without exposure to the phenolic protein-denaturants exhibited extensive pectin solubilization and depolymerization when incubated in 50 mM Na-acetate, 50 mM CDTA at pH 4.5, indicating the presence of active PG. Based on the changes in the Mr of pectins solubilized in 50 mM Na-acetate, 50 mM CDTA, pH 4.5, active PG was also detected in wall exposed during isolation to phenolacetic acid-water (PAW, 2:1:1, w/v/v), a solvent commonly employed as an enzyme denaturant. Although the depolymerization of pectins in PAW-treated wall was extensive, oligouronides constituted minor reaction products. Interestingly, PAW-treated wall did not exhibit PG-mediated pectin release when incubated under conditions (30 mM Na-acetate, 150 mM NaCl, pH 4.5) in which nonphenol-treated cell wall exhibited high autolytic activity. In an alternative protocol designed to inactivate PG, cell wall was exposed to Tris-buffered phenol (BP). In contrast to pectins released from PAW-treated wall, pectins solubilized from BP-treated wall at pH 4.5 were indistinguishable in Mr from those recovered from BP-treated wall at pH 6.5 Even when incubated at pH 4.5 at 34°C, conditions under which pectins from PAW-treated wall underwent more rapid and extensive depolymerization, pectins from BP-treated wall exhibited no change in Mr, providing evidence that active PG was not present in these wall preparations. The implications of this study in interpreting the solubility and Mr of pectin in cell wall from ripening fruit are discussed.  相似文献

Summary Hennemann (1983) provided empirical support for McNab's (1980) hypothesis that a higher specific metabolic rate (SMR) in mammals translates into a higher intrinsic rate of increase (r m ). However, the few marine mammals in Hennemann's data base were excluded from any detailed analyses because their high rates of metabolism but only average or low values of r m (p. 106) were thought to reflect trade-offs between maintenance and production necessary to compensate for heat loss in aquatic environments (Hennemann 1983, also see McNab 1980).To investigate further the relationships among r m , body size, and specific metabolic rate in marine mammals (pinnepeds, sirenians, and cetaceans), r m was estimated for 37 populations using published life-history data and Cole's (1954) equation (Hennemann 1983). Estimates of r m in relation to body size in marine mammals were generally within the 95% confidence limits calculated for terrestrial mammals using Hennemann's data. Contrary to Hennemann's (1983) observations, eight of these populations had an r m which was higher in relation to body size than predicted by the average terrestrial mammalian relationship. Furthermore, for marine mammal populations where suitable data were available, r m was correlated with specific metabolic rate (r=0.85, P0.035) and all the estimates were again within the 95% confidence limits established from data for terrestrial mammals (Hennemann 1983). It is premature, therefore, to reject the hypothesis that marine mammals do not differ significantly from terrestrial mammals in their allocation of energy for maintanance and reproduction.  相似文献

The collection and documentation of the experimental evidence of chaos in biological populations have always been elusive. We were puzzled by the observation that the most frequently computed demographic parameter for laboratory insect populations, the population intrinsic rate of increase (r m), seems too small to induce chaotic dynamics. For example, when it is directly utilized as an approximation to the parameter (a) of the one-parameter discrete logistic model, the parameter seems well out of the chaotic range. In a recent reanalysis of our early laboratory demographic data of 1800 Russian wheat aphids (RWA), we discovered that a proper measure unit conversion should be performed to make the link between r m and the discrete logistic model. We think that this conversion issue may have been ignored historically in biological literature since we are not aware of any uses of the r m in the discussion of chaos. It should be noted that r m is different from the r in discrete logistic model (e.g., May in Nature 261:459–467, 1976). Since extensive demographic data purported to estimate r m have been accumulated in literature on population growth, the finding revealed with our RWA experiment data can easily be verified with the published data in literature. We near-arbitrarily surveyed 10 studies (containing 37 datasets of r m) published in the literature and archived in JSTOR or BioOne databases to test the conversion, and the results confirmed our finding. The finding should significantly expand the evidence base of chaos in laboratory populations of insects and possibly microorganisms, too.  相似文献

Summary Controlled environment experiments on small epidemics of powdery mildew in mixtures of barley and wheat indicated that there was a relationship between the density of susceptible host units in the mixture and the rate of increase of disease within the stand best described by the equation: -r m =r s +clog e m; where r m and r s are epidemic rates in a mixture and a susceptible monoculture of the same overall stand density, m is the proportion of host plants in the mixture, and c is a constant. By the use of appropriate controls, it was shown that most of the reduction in epidemic rates in mixtures was attributable to the reduction in density of susceptible host units. Interception of air-borne inoculum by immune plants played a relatively minor role, although extrapolation of the results suggests that this factor might become significant if there was a sufficiently high proportion of immune to susceptible plants present.  相似文献

Under the condition of physiological pH environment (pH = 7.40), the interactions of safranin T (ST) with herring sperm DNA were studied by means of spectral methods using acridine orange (AO) as a fluorescence probe. The spectroscopic characteristics of DNA–AO in the case of ST (along with the increase of concentration) were observed in an aqueous medium. The binding constants for ST stranded DNA and competitive bindings of ST interacting with DNA–AO systems were examined by fluorescence spectra, and the binding mechanism of ST with DNA was researched via viscosity measurements. All the testimony manifested that bonding modes between ST and DNA were evidenced to be intercalative binding and electrostatic binding, and the combining constant of ST with DNA was obtained. Fertility life table parameters were assessed for five populations (strains) of two Trichogramma species, T. embryophagum Hartig and T. principium Sugonyaev & Sorokina, collected from eggs of the carob moth Ectomyelois ceratoniae (Zeller) in Iranian pomegranate orchards. Four combinations of two constant temperatures (25°C, 30°C) and two relative humidity levels (50% RH, 70% RH) were used. The overall intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm) was significantly decreased with decreased relative humidity but was uninfluenced by temperature. The highest and lowest rm values were observed in T. embryophagum from Qum (0.34 ± 0.004) and T. embryophagum from Varamin (0.13 ± 0.01), respectively. Two‐way interaction analyses revealed that the strains had significantly different responses in their rm values at different temperatures and relative humidities. In general, rm values were significantly higher at 25°C and 70% RH than at 30°C and 50% RH. The Qum strain of T. embryophagum was the most promising candidate to be considered as a biocontrol agent against E. ceratoniae due to its high reproductive rate (0.27 ± 0.01) at conditions (30°C and 50% RH) similar to the actual climatic conditions in Iranian pomegranate orchards during the major part of the growing season.  相似文献

Oxygen uptake rates of undisturbed sediment columns have been used as an integrative measure of the metabolic activities of benthic communities. Since the intensity of metabolic processes of profundal lake is dependent on the production of organic matter in the pelagic zone, oxygen uptake rates reflect the trophic condition of the whole lake. Four small lakes of central Chile, differing strongly in trophic conditions, provided a possibility to compare benthic oxygen uptake rates, under different oxygen conditions (Quiñenco, Grande, Chica and Lleulleu). Our objective was to establish the relationship between the oxygen uptake rates and bottom characteristics of lakes with different trophic conditions. At 8 mg O2 l-1 in the overlying water of the cores studied, the oxygen uptake rates of the sediment were: Quiñenco 51.2–56.0 mg O2 m2 h-1 (eutrophic), Grande 41.2–46.4 mg O2 m2 h-1 (mesotrophic), Chica 23.2–18.1 mg O2 m2 h-1 (mesotrophic) and Lleulleu 11.7–16.0 mg O2 m2 h-1 (oligotrophic). By exposing the sediments to different oxygen levels in the laboratory, it was found that benthic community metabolism decreased with oxygen concentrations. The slope of regression lines, relating oxygen uptake rates to oxygen concentrations, differed for the different sites investigated, closely related with the trophic conditions of the lakes. It was positively correlated with the organic matter content of the sediment of the cores (r 2= 0.78, p<0,05) and the nutrients of the bottom waters (total-P: r 2= 0.73, p<0,05; total-N: r 2= 0.73, p<0,05), and negatively with the redox potential of the sediments (r 2= 0.88, p<0,05).  相似文献

Summary The intrinsic rate of natural increase (r m), conception to weaning time (t cw), age of first reproduction (tmat), and components of fecundity were compared between ecologically similar groups of 42 metatherian (=marsupial) and 42 eutherian mammals. Marsupial t cw s average 50% longer than those of eutherians. Small marsupials (<400 g) mature later, and have lower and r ms than eutherians; large marsupials (>10,000 g) do not mature later but also have lower r ms. At body sizes of 1,000–3,500 g, marsupials and eutherians have similar t mat s and t cw s but marsupials have greater r ms. Marsupials compensate for their longer t cw s by a variety of methods including embryonic diapause, larger litter sizes, and short periods between weaning and maturity. Although the greatest similarities in marsupial and eutherian life histories are at body sizes of 1–5 kg, compensation for long t cw may be seen at any marsupial body size. Other ecological factors not withstanding, marsupial reproduction is neither inherently inferior to that of eutherians nor obviously more advantageous in unpredictable environs.  相似文献

The association between the concentrations of hydroxamic acids, total phenols, and indole alkoloids in winter wheat cultivars with their antibiotic resistance to the grain aphid Sitobion avenae (F.) (Homoptera: Aphididae) was studied. The antibiosis was measured under field conditions using the intrinsic rate of natural increase (rm). The content of the studied allelochemicals was estimated in flag leaf at the anthesis growth stage. Highly significant negative correlations were found between the rm values and the concentrations of hydroxamic acids (r=–0.905) and total phenols (r=–0.946), but not with indole alkaloids (r=–0.380). The contribution of these allelochemicals to the resistance of winter wheat to S. avenae is discussed.
Résumé Les effets combinés de la concentration en substances allélochimiques des feuilles flétries et de la résistance antibiotique aux pucerons des grains ont été étudiés sur 4 cultivars de blé d'hiver, dont 2 modérément résistants: Saga et Grana et 2 sensibles: Emika et Liwilla. L'antibiose a été évaluée dans les conditions de la nature, aux stades d'épiaison et d'anthèse, en utilisant le taux intrinsèque de croissance rm. La quantification des substances allélochimiques a été effectuée par colorimétrie.Des corrélations négatives hautement significatives ont été trouvées entre les valeurs de Rm et la concentration en acides hydroxamiques (r=–0,905 pour 10 dl, P<0,01) et la teneur totale en phénols (r=–0,946, pour 10 dl, P<0,01). La teneur en alcaloïdes indols était elle aussi corrélée négativement, mais pas significativement avec rm (r=–0,380, pour 10 dl, P>0,1). La discussion porte sur la contribution de ces substances allélochimiques à la résistance du blé d'hiver à Sitobion avenae.

Short- and long-term effects of elevated CO2 concentration and temperature on whole plant respiratory relationships are examined for wheat grown at four constant temperatures and at two CO2 concentrations. Whole plant CO2 exchange was measured on a 24 h basis and measurement conditions varied both to observe short-term effects and to determine the growth respiration coefficient (rg), dry weight maintenance coefficient (rm), basal (i.e. dark acclimated) respiration coefficient (rg), and 24 h respiration:photosynthesis ratio (R:P). There was no response of rg to short-term variation in CO2 concentration. For plants with adequate N supply, rg was unaffected by the growth-CO2 despite a 10% reduction in the plant's N concentration (%N). However, rm was decreased 13%, and rb was decreased 20% by growth in elevated CO2 concentration relative to ambient. Nevertheless, R:P was not affected by growth in elevated CO2. Whole plant respiration responded to short-term variation of ± 5 °C around the growth temperature with low sensitivity (Q10= 1.8 at 15 °C, 1.3 at 30 °C). The shape of the response of whole plant respiration to growth temperature was different from that of the short term response, being a slanted S-shape declining between 25 and 30 °C. While rm, increased, rg decreased when growth temperature increased between 15 and 20 °C. Above 20 °C rm became temperature insensitive while rg increased with growth temperature. Despite these complex component responses, R:P increased only from 0.40 to 0.43 between 15° and 30 °C growth temperatures. Giving the plants a step increase in temperature caused a transient increase in R:P which recovered to the pre-transient value in 3 days. It is concluded that use of a constant R:P with respect to average temperature and CO2 concentration may be a more simple and accurate way to model the responses of wheat crop respiration to ‘climate change’ than the more complex and mechanistically dubious functional analysis into growth and maintenance components.  相似文献

Effects of sublethal azadirachtin exposure to the biological performance of Tetranychus urticae Koch was studied under laboratory conditions. Bioassay was used to asses the effect of different concentrations of azadirachtin on longevity, fecundity, fertility, and offspring development. Azadirachtin (64 and 128 ppm) affected fecundity and mortality but had no effect on fertility and offspring development. A subsequent life-table study with 80 ppm of azadirachtin found that the compound caused a reduction of 50% in survival to adult stage. The peak of reproduction was reached at 5 days causing a decrease in the mean fecundity to almost eight times than of untreated females. The net reproductive rate (R 0), the intrinsic rate of increase (r m), and the finite rate of increase () of treated females were lower. Treatment showed a negative value of r m, resulting in a declining population. These results suggest that azadirachtin could be incorporated in Integrated Pest Management (IPM) programmes of T. urticae.This revised version was published online in May 2005 with a corrected cover date.  相似文献

The present work examined the key elements featuring in the various methods used to characterize the erythrocyte sodium-lithium countertransport. Effects of medium composition on lithium efflux were investigated in 20 subjects. Mean lithium efflux (mmol Li/l RBC.h) into a 150 mm sodium medium was significantly higher than efflux into a revised sodium-rich medium (149 mm) containing 1 mm Mg (0.335 ± 0.100 vs. 0.298 ± 0.085 respectively; P < 0.03). Mean lithium efflux into sodium-free media where sodium had been entirely replaced by magnesium, was significantly lower than efflux into a choline-based medium containing only 1 mm magnesium (0.088 ± 0.027 vs. 0.109 ± 0.034 respectively; P= 0.03). Sodium-lithium countertransport activity and the transporter's kinetic profile were measured simultaneously in 35 subjects using traditional choline-based and kinetic methodologies. There was a significant correlation between countertransport activity and maximal rate of turnover (V max) (r= 0.62; P < 0.001); V max values were consistently greater than their corresponding countertransport activities (P < 0.001). On subdividing the subject group into tertiles based on the Michaelis-Menten constant (k m ) values (mm), <75, 75 − 150 and >150, the slopes of the regression lines for each group diminished progressively (0.64, 0.49 and 0.23 respectively), correlations within each group remained significant (P < 0.001, P < 0.001 and P < 0.02). No significant correlation was found between k m values and countertransport activity (r= 0.035; P=ns). Increasing the number of points representing sodium concentrations within the range 0–150 mm, improved the confidence in the emerging estimates of V max and k m obtained by linear transformation. Comparison of kinetic data derived using four different analytical methods (two linear transformations, a nonlinear regression and a statistical method), showed no significant differences between the estimates yielded for either V max (P= 0.88, ns) or k m (P= 0.92, ns). This study has highlighted the critical roles of assay conditions and derivation techniques used when measuring sodium-lithium countertransport, emphasizing the need for standardization of the methodology. Carbon use efficiency (CUE, the ratio between the amount of carbon incorporated into dry matter to the amount of carbon fixed in gross photosynthesis) is an important parameter in estimating growth rate from photosynthesis data or models. It previously has been found to be relatively constant among species and under different environmental conditions. Here it is shown that CUE can be expressed as a function of the relative growth rate (rGR) and the growth (gr) and maintenance respiration coefficients (mr): 1/CUE = 1 + gr + mr/rGR. Net daily carbon gain (Cdg), rGR, and CUE were estimated from whole‐plant gas exchange measurements on lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) ranging from 24 to 66 d old. Carbon use efficiency decreased from 0.6 to 0.2 with increasing dry mass, but there was no correlation between CUE and Cdg. The decrease in CUE with increasing dry mass was correlated with a simultaneous decrease in rGR. From the above equation, gr and mr were estimated to be 0.48 mol mol?1 and 0.039 g glucose g–1 dry matter d?1, respectively. Based on the gr estimate, the theoretical upper limit for CUE of these plants was 0.68. The importance of maintenance respiration in the carbon balance of the plants increased with increasing plant size. Maintenance accounted for 25% of total respiration in small plants and 90% in large plants.  相似文献

The aphid, Aphis gossypii, is a primary pest of citrus, cotton, cucurbits and greenhouse‐grown vegetables in Turkey and throughout Europe. There is some previous empirical data suggesting that host‐adapted genotypes of this aphid exist which may in fact be host‐races. To determine if host races of A. gossypii are indeed present in the eastern Mediterranean region of Turkey, reciprocal host transfer experiments and life table analyses were performed with multiple asexual lineages (= clones) of the aphid collected from different hosts. The collection hosts included citrus, cucumber, eggplant, okra, sweet pepper and cotton. Aphid developmental times on the host from which the aphid was originally collected (= collection or natal host) were shorter (5.2–6.0 days) and had a higher intrinsic rate of population growth (rm = 0.25–0.44) than the 6.6–7.3 days required when the aphid was reared on a non‐original collection host (= non‐collection host or non‐natal host) and had rm = 0.03–0.30. Total immature mortality of the cotton clone, especially in the first nymphal stage, was high (51–100%) with low rm (0–0.03) on cucumber, citrus and sweet pepper. Aphid populations transferred from citrus, eggplant and okra to cotton (rm = 0.29–0.30) did not differ significantly in their performance from that of the cotton population on cotton (rm = 0.34), whereas that from sweet pepper and cucumber populations (rm = 0.22–0.24) were significantly lower. These data have allowed us to separate A. gossypii into two distinct biological groups: (a) a ‘generalist’ population obtained from cucumber, sweet pepper, citrus, eggplant and okra which exhibited statistically better development on cotton; versus (b) a population from cotton which, by comparison on reciprocal hosts, developed poorly on non‐natal hosts except on eggplant. Development of the cotton clone on cucumber and okra was not improved after four successive generations on the non‐natal host. The good development of A. gossypii from eggplant and cotton on these reciprocal hosts suggests that these particular clones were similar, if not identical, host races.  相似文献

We quantified metabolic power consumption as a function of wind speed in the presence and absence of simulated solar radiation in rock squirrels, Spermophilus variegatus, a diurnal rodent inhabiting arid regions of Mexico and the western United States. In the absence of solar radiation, metabolic rate increased 2.2-fold as wind speed increased from 0.25 to 4.0 m·s-1. Whole-body thermal resistance declined 56% as wind speed increased over this range, indicating that body insulation in this species is much more sensitive to wind disruption than in other mammals. In the presence of 950 W·m-2 simulated solar radiation, metabolic rate increased 2.3-fold as wind speed was elevated from 0.25 to 4.0 m·s-1. Solar heat gain, calculated as the reduction in metabolic heat production associated with the addition of solar radiation, increased with wind speed from 1.26 mW·g-1 at 0.25 m·s-1 to 2.92 mW·g-1 at 4.0 m·s-1. This increase is opposite to theoretical expectations.
