F. hepatica pyruvate kinase and phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) carboxykinase were found to have properties of regulatory enzymes in the dissimilation of PEP and the control of metabolic flow. Mn2+ and K+ were required for pyruvate kinase activity. In the presence of fructose-1, 6-diphosphate (FDP), Mg2+ could substitute for Mn2+. FDP caused a 4-fold increase in the Mn2+ activated pyruvate kinase activity. This was accompanied by a 12-fold decrease in apparent Km(PEP) and a 3-fold decrease in apparent Km (ADP). ATP markedly inhibited F. hepatica pyruvate kinase, but this inhibition was relieved by FDP. Estimates of metabolic levels indicated that the pyruvate kinase is saturated with PEP and ADP in vivo, but will be highly sensitive to fluctuations in the physiological concentrations of FDP and ATP. NADH doubled the activity of the PEP carboxykinase reaction and decreased the apparent Km (PEP) for this enzyme 3-fold. While the maximal activity of the PEP carboxykinase reaction was substantially higher than the pyruvate kinase reaction, the steady state concentration of PEP suggests that the PEP carboxykinase will not be saturated with this substrate.  相似文献

The actions of tamoxifen, a selective estrogen receptor modulator used in chemotherapy and chemo-prevention of breast cancer, on glycolysis and gluconeogenesis were investigated in the isolated perfused rat liver. Tamoxifen inhibited gluconeogenesis from both lactate and fructose at very low concentrations (e.g., 5 μM). The opposite, i.e., stimulation, was found for glycolysis from both endogenous glycogen and fructose. Oxygen uptake was unaffected, inhibited or stimulated, depending on the conditions. Stimulation occurred in both microsomes and mitochondria. Tamoxifen did not affect the most important key-enzymes of gluconeogenesis, namely, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase, pyruvate carboxylase, fructose 1,6-bisphosphatase and glucose 6-phosphatase. Confirming previous observations, however, tamoxifen inhibited very strongly NADH- and succinate-oxidase of freeze–thawing disrupted mitochondria. Tamoxifen promoted the release of both lactate dehydrogenase (mainly cytosolic) and fumarase (mainly mitochondrial) into the perfusate. Tamoxifen (200 μM) clearly diminished the ATP content and increased the ADP content of livers in the presence of lactate with a diminution of the ATP/ADP ratio from 1.67 to 0.79. The main causes for gluconeogenesis inhibition are probably: (a) inhibition of energy metabolism; (b) deviation of intermediates (malate and glucose 6-phosphate) for the production of NADPH required in hydroxylation and demethylation reactions; (c) deviation of glucosyl units toward glucuronidation reactions; (d) secondary inhibitory action of nitric oxide, whose production is stimulated by tamoxifen; (e) impairment of the cellular structure, especially the membrane structure. Stimulation of glycolysis is probably a compensatory phenomenon for the diminished mitochondrial ATP production. The multiple actions of tamoxifen at relatively low concentrations can represent a continuous burden to the overall hepatic functions during long treatment periods.  相似文献

Background

Plasma glucose levels are tightly regulated within a narrow physiologic range. Insulin-mediated glucose uptake by tissues must be balanced by the appearance of glucose from nutritional sources, glycogen stores, or gluconeogenesis. In this regard, a common pathway regulating both glucose clearance and appearance has not been described. The metabolism of glucose to produce ATP is generally considered to be the primary stimulus for insulin release from beta-cells. Similarly, gluconeogenesis from phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) is believed to be the primarily pathway via the cytosolic isoform of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase (PEPCK-C). These models cannot adequately explain the regulation of insulin secretion or gluconeogenesis.

Scope of review

A metabolic sensing pathway involving mitochondrial GTP (mtGTP) and PEP synthesis by the mitochondrial isoform of PEPCK (PEPCK-M) is associated with glucose-stimulated insulin secretion from pancreatic beta-cells. Here we examine whether there is evidence for a similar mtGTP-dependent pathway involved in gluconeogenesis. In both islets and the liver, mtGTP is produced at the substrate level by the enzyme succinyl CoA synthetase (SCS-GTP) with a rate proportional to the TCA cycle. In the beta-cell PEPCK-M then hydrolyzes mtGTP in the production of PEP that, unlike mtGTP, can escape the mitochondria to generate a signal for insulin release. Similarly, PEPCK-M and mtGTP might also provide a significant source of PEP in gluconeogenic tissues for the production of glucose. This review will focus on the possibility that PEPCK-M, as a sensor for TCA cycle flux, is a key mechanism to regulate both insulin secretion and gluconeogenesis suggesting conservation of this biochemical mechanism in regulating multiple aspects of glucose homeostasis. Moreover, we propose that this mechanism may be important for regulating insulin secretion and gluconeogenesis compared to canonical nutrient sensing pathways.

Major conclusions

PEPCK-M, initially believed to be absent in islets, carries a substantial metabolic flux in beta-cells. This flux is intimately involved with the coupling of glucose-stimulated insulin secretion. PEPCK-M activity may have been similarly underestimated in glucose producing tissues and could potentially be an unappreciated but important source of gluconeogenesis.

General significance

The generation of PEP via PEPCK-M may occur via a metabolic sensing pathway important for regulating both insulin secretion and gluconeogenesis. This article is part of a Special Issue entitled Frontiers of Mitochondrial Research.  相似文献

The inhibition of triosephosphate isomerase (TPI) in glycolysis by the pyruvate kinase (PK) substrate phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) results in a newly discovered feedback loop that counters oxidative stress in cancer and actively respiring cells. The mechanism underlying this inhibition is illuminated by the co-crystal structure of TPI with bound PEP at 1.6 Å resolution, and by mutational studies guided by the crystallographic results. PEP is bound to the catalytic pocket of TPI and occludes substrate, which accounts for the observation that PEP competitively inhibits the interconversion of glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate and dihydroxyacetone phosphate. Replacing an isoleucine residue located in the catalytic pocket of TPI with valine or threonine altered binding of substrates and PEP, reducing TPI activity in vitro and in vivo. Confirming a TPI-mediated activation of the pentose phosphate pathway (PPP), transgenic yeast cells expressing these TPI mutations accumulate greater levels of PPP intermediates and have altered stress resistance, mimicking the activation of the PK–TPI feedback loop. These results support a model in which glycolytic regulation requires direct catalytic inhibition of TPI by the pyruvate kinase substrate PEP, mediating a protective metabolic self-reconfiguration of central metabolism under conditions of oxidative stress.  相似文献

Bacterial AAA+ ATPase ClpB cooperates with DnaK during reactivation of aggregated proteins. The ClpB-mediated disaggregation is linked to translocation of polypeptides through the channel in the oligomeric ClpB. Two isoforms of ClpB are produced in vivo: the full-length ClpB95 and ClpB80, which does not contain the substrate-interacting N-terminal domain. The biological role of the truncated isoform ClpB80 is unknown. We found that resolubilization of aggregated proteins in Escherichia coli after heat shock and reactivation of aggregated proteins in vitro and in vivo occurred at higher rates in the presence of ClpB95 with ClpB80 than with ClpB95 or ClpB80 alone. Combined amounts of ClpB95 and ClpB80 bound to aggregated substrates were similar to the amounts of either ClpB95 or ClpB80 bound to the substrates in the absence of another isoform. The ATP hydrolysis rate of ClpB95 with ClpB80, which is linked to the rate of substrate translocation, was not higher than the rates measured for the isolated ClpB95 or ClpB80. We postulate that a reaction step that takes place after substrate binding to ClpB and precedes substrate translocation is rate-limiting during aggregate reactivation, and its efficiency is enhanced in the presence of both ClpB isoforms. Moreover, we found that ClpB95 and ClpB80 form hetero-oligomers, which are similar in size to the homo-oligomers of ClpB95 or ClpB80. Thus, the mechanism of functional cooperation of the two isoforms of ClpB may be linked to their heteroassociation. Our results suggest that the functionality of other AAA+ ATPases may be also optimized by interaction and synergistic cooperation of their isoforms.  相似文献

The existence of the pyruvate kinase (PK) in pig liver mitochondria was shown by monitoring photometrically the PK reaction in solubilised mitochondria with either phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) or ADP used as a substrate. In distinction with the cytosolic isoenzyme, the mitochondrial PK showed a sigmoidal dependence on either PEP or ADP concentrations. The occurrence of the mitochondrial PK was confirmed by immunological analysis. Titration with digitonin showed that mPK is restricted to the matrix. PEP addition to mitochondria resulted in reduction of the intramitochondrial NAD(P)+ inhibited by either the non-penetrant thiol reagent mersalyl or by arsenite, an inhibitor of the pyruvate dehydrogenase complex. Citrate/oxaloacetate appearance outside mitochondria also occurred as result of PEP addition to PLM. Taken together these findings support a role for PEP itself in triggering fatty acid synthesis via its mitochondrial metabolism.  相似文献

The number of people suffering from diabetes is hastily increasing and the condition is associated with altered brain glucose homeostasis. Brain glycogen is located in astrocytes and being a carbohydrate reservoir it contributes to glucose homeostasis. Furthermore, glycogen has been indicated to be important for proper neurotransmission under normal conditions. Previous findings from our laboratory suggested that glucose metabolism was reduced in type 2 diabetes, and thus we wanted to investigate more specifically how brain glycogen metabolism contributes to maintain energy status in the type 2 diabetic state. Also, our objective was to elucidate the contribution of glycogen to support neurotransmitter glutamate and GABA homeostasis. A glycogen phosphorylase (GP) inhibitor was administered to Sprague-Dawley (SprD) and Zucker Diabetic Fatty (ZDF) rats in vivo and after one day of treatment [1-13C]glucose was used to monitor metabolism. Brain levels of 13C labeling in glucose, lactate, alanine, glutamate, GABA, glutamine and aspartate were determined. Our results show that inhibition of brain glycogen metabolism reduced the amounts of glutamate in both the control and type 2 diabetes models. The reduction in glutamate was associated with a decrease in the pyruvate carboxylase/pyruvate dehydrogenase ratio in the control but not the type 2 diabetes model. In the type 2 diabetes model GABA levels were increased suggesting that brain glycogen serves a role in maintaining a proper ratio between excitatory and inhibitory neurotransmitters in type 2 diabetes. Both the control and the type 2 diabetic states had a compensatory increase in glucose-derived 13C processed through the TCA cycle following inhibition of glycogen degradation. Finally, it was indicated that the type 2 diabetes model might have an augmented necessity for compensatory upregulation at the glycolytic level.  相似文献

Phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP) generated from pyruvate is required for de novo synthesis of glycerol and glycogen in skeletal muscle. One possible pathway involves synthesis of PEP from the citric acid cycle intermediates via PEP carboxykinase, whereas another could involve reversal of pyruvate kinase (PK). Earlier studies have reported that reverse flux through PK can contribute carbon precursors for glycogen synthesis in muscle, but the physiological importance of this pathway remains uncertain especially in the setting of high plasma glucose. In addition, although PEP is a common intermediate for both glyconeogenesis and glyceroneogenesis, the importance of reverse PK in de novo glycerol synthesis has not been examined. Here we studied the contribution of reverse PK to synthesis of glycogen and the glycerol moiety of acylglycerols in skeletal muscle of animals with high plasma glucose. Rats received a single intraperitoneal bolus of glucose, glycerol, and lactate under a fed or fasted state. Only one of the three substrates was 13C-labeled in each experiment. After 3 h of normal awake activity, the animals were sacrificed, and the contribution from each substrate to glycogen and the glycerol moiety of acylglycerols was evaluated. The fraction of 13C labeling in glycogen and the glycerol moiety exceeded the possible contribution from either plasma glucose or muscle oxaloacetate. The reverse PK served as a common route for both glyconeogenesis and glyceroneogenesis in the skeletal muscle of rats with high plasma glucose. The activity of pyruvate carboxylase was low in muscle, and no PEP carboxykinase activity was detected.  相似文献

Recent advances in the field of brain energy metabolism strongly suggest that glutamate receptor-mediated neurotransmission is coupled with molecular signals that switch-on glucose utilization pathways to meet the high energetic requirements of neurons. Failure to adequately coordinate energy supply for neurotransmission ultimately results in a positive amplifying loop of receptor over-activation leading to neuronal death, a process known as excitotoxicity. In this review, we revisited current concepts in excitotoxic mechanisms, their involvement in energy substrate utilization, and the signaling pathways that coordinate both processes. In particular, we have focused on the novel role played by the E3 ubiquitin ligase, anaphase-promoting complex/cyclosome (APC/C)-Cdh1, in cell metabolism. Our laboratory identified 6-phosphofructo-2-kinase/fructose-2,6-bisphosphatase-3 (PFKFB3) –a key glycolytic-promoting enzyme– as an APC/C-Cdh1 substrate. Interestingly, APC/C-Cdh1 activity is inhibited by over-activation of glutamate receptors through a Ca2+-mediated mechanism. Furthermore, by inhibiting APC/C-Cdh1 activity, glutamate-receptors activation promotes PFKFB3 stabilization, leading to increased glycolysis and decreased pentose-phosphate pathway activity. This causes a loss in neuronal ability to regenerate glutathione, triggering oxidative stress and delayed excitotoxicity. Further investigation is critical to identify novel molecules responsible for the coupling of energy metabolism with glutamatergic neurotransmission and excitotoxicity, as well as to help developing new therapeutic strategies against neurodegeneration.  相似文献

Glucosephosphate isomerase (EC 5.3.1.9) of Schistosoma mansoni is inhibited competitively by a number of tetrose, pentose, and hexose phosphates with inhibitor constant (Ki) values in the range of 0.5 to 400 μM. The most potent inhibitor is 5-phospho-d-arabinonate which resembles the cis-enediolate transition state intermediate of the reaction. These analogs were also found to be effective inhibitors of the production of lactate from glucose by suitably supplemented worm homogenates. The rank order of potency of inhibition of glycolysis was inversely related to the magnitudes of the Ki values for glucosephosphate isomerase. These Ki values were similar to those previously reported for mammalian glucosephosphate isomerase, suggesting similarities in the steric and electronic characteristics of the active sites of these isofunctional enzymes. This conclusion was further supported by the observed pH dependence of the inhibition by 5-phospho-d-arabinonate. Although glucosephosphate isomerase is not a rate-limiting enzyme of glycolysis, in the conventional sense, its selective inhibition could be of chemotherapeutic importance, in part because of the accumulation in glycolyzing systems of glucose 6-phosphate which is a potent feedback inhibitor of hexokinase.  相似文献

The roles of the pyruvate decarboxylation pathway and TCA metabolic cycle in activation of anaerobic metabolism in ripening Hamlin oranges were investigated. Oranges were harvested weekly from October to February during the 1980–81 and 1981–82 growing season. Juice vesicles from each weekly sample were assayed for pyruvate decarboxylase, alcohol dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase, malate dehydrogenase, citrate synthase, isocitrate dehydrogenase and cytochrome oxidase. Also, juice was assayed for ethanol, acetaldehyde, pyruvate, oxalacetate, malate and citrate. In December when ethanol accumulated rapidly in the fruit, pyruvate decarboxylase and alcohol dehydrogenase increased markedly. During the same month, the pyruvate level declined, suggesting that the increases in enzyme levels activated the conversion of pyruvate to ethanol.  相似文献

The coenzyme specificity of enzymes in the oxidative pentose phosphate pathway of Gluconobacter oxydans was investigated. By investigation of the activities of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) and 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH) in the soluble fraction of G. oxydans, and cloning and expression of genes in Escherichia coli, it was found that both G6PDH and 6PGDH have NAD/NADP dual coenzyme specificities. It was suggested that the pentose phosphate pathway is responsible for NADH regeneration in G. oxydans.  相似文献

The titers of key enzymes of xylose metabolism were measured and correlated with the kinetics of xylitol production by Debaryomyces hansenii under different oxygen transfer rates (OTR) in a batch reactor. An OTR change from 2.72 to 4.22 mmol O2 l−1 min−1 resulted in a decrease in NADPH-dependent xylose reductase (XR) and NAD ± -dependent xylitol dehydrogenase (XDH) activities. For higher values of OTR (12.93 mmol O2 l−1 min−1, the XDH titer increased twofold whereas the XR titer did not show a significant change. At the lowest OTR (2.72 mmol O2 l−1 min−1), xylitol (and ethanol) production rates showed the highest values. However, xylitol specific productivity was twice as high as ethanol specific productivity. The titer of the NADPH-forming enzyme, glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (GPDH), increased from 333 to 412 mU mg−1 when the OTR was increased. However, 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (PGDH) activity remained unchanged and at a lower level, which indicates that this enzyme is responsible for the carbon flux control of the oxidative branch of the pentose phosphate pathway. The activity of the alcohol-forming enzyme was repressed at the higher amount of oxygen, decreasing its activity more than 50%. The changes in ADH suggested that two different metabolic regions under oxygen-limited conditions can be hypothesized for xylose metabolism by D. hansenii. For low OTR values (up to 4.22 mmol O2 l−1 min−1), a fermentative-type activity is displayed. At higher OTR values (above 4.22 mmol O2 l−1 min−1), no significant fermentative activity is reported.  相似文献

In this study, we analyzed the toxic effect of Ni during the development of wheat shoots. Typical developmental alterations in carbon metabolism-related parameters reflecting changes associated with the transition of the seedlings from heterotrophic to autotrophic metabolism were observed in the control shoots between the 1st and the 4th days. Adverse effects of 50 and 100 μM Ni became evident starting from the 4th day of growth on the metal-containing media. We found that Ni-induced stimulation of phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) activity coincided with decrease in the ribulose-1,5-bisphosphate carboxylase/oxygenase (Rubisco) level and with declines in net photosynthetic rate (PN) and stomatal conductance (gs). Application of Ni resulted in increased activities of several dehydrogenases: glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH), 6-phosphogluconate dehydrogenase (6PGDH), isocitrate dehydrogenase (NADP-ICDH) and malate dehydrogenase (NADH-MDH). In contrast, the activities of malic enzymes (NADP-ME and NAD-ME) decreased due to Ni stress. Treatment with Ni led to accumulation of glucose and declined concentration of sucrose as well as considerable increases in concentrations of malic and citric acids. Our results indicate that Ni stress redirects the carbon metabolism of developing wheat shoots to provide carbon skeletons for synthesis of amino acids and organic acids as well as to supply reducing power to sustain normal metabolic processes and to support defense mechanisms against oxidative stress.  相似文献

Coordinated recovery of hepatic glucose metabolism is prerequisite for normal liver regeneration. To examine roles of hypoxia inducible factor-1α (HIF-1α) for hepatic glucose homeostasis during the reparative process, we inactivated the gene in hepatocytes in vivo. Following partial hepatectomy (PH), recovery of residual liver weight was initially retarded in the mutant mice by down-regulation of hepatocyte proliferation, but occurred comparably between the mutant and control mice at 72 h after PH. At this time point, the mutant mice showed lowered blood glucose levels with enhanced accumulation of glycogen in the liver. The mutant mice exhibited impairment of hepatic gluconeogenesis as assessed by alanine tolerance test. This appeared to result from reduced expression of PGK-1 and PEPCK since 3-PG, PEP and malate were accumulated to greater extents in the regenerated liver. In conclusion, these findings provide evidence for roles of HIF-1α in the regulation of gluconeogenesis under liver regeneration.  相似文献

Phosphoenolpyruvate carboxylase (PEPC) was purified from leaves of four species of Alternanthera differing in their photosynthetic carbon metabolism: Alternanthera sessilis (C3), A. pungens (C4), A. ficoides and A. tenella (C3-C4 intermediates or C3-C4). The activity and properties of PEPC were examined at limiting (0.05 mM) or saturating (10 mM) bicarbonate concentrations. The Vmax as well as Km values (for Mg2+ or PEP) of PEPC from A. ficoides and A. tenella (C3-C4 intermediates) were in between those of C3 (A. sessilis) and C4 species (A. pungens). Similarly, the sensitivity of PEPC to malate (an inhibitor) or G-6-P (an activator) of A. ficoides and A. tenella (C3-C4) was also of intermediate status between those of C3 and C4 species of A. sessilis and A. pungens, respectively. In all the four species, the maximal activity (Vmax), affinity for PEP (Km), and the sensitivity to malate (KI) or G-6-P (KA) of PEPC were higher at 10 mM bicarbonate than at 0.05 mM bicarbonate. Again, the sensitivity to bicarbonate of PEPC from C3-C4 intermediates was in between those of C3- and C4-species. Thus the characteristics of PEPC of C3-C4 intermediate species of Alternanthera are intermediate between C3- and C4-type, in both their kinetic and regulatory properties. Bicarbonate could be an important modulator of PEPC, particularly in C4 plants. This revised version was published online in August 2006 with corrections to the Cover Date.  相似文献

Mycobacterium leprae, the intracellular etiological agent of leprosy, infects Schwann promoting irreversible physical disabilities and deformities. These cells are responsible for myelination and maintenance of axonal energy metabolism through export of metabolites, such as lactate and pyruvate. In the present work, we observed that infected Schwann cells increase glucose uptake with a concomitant increase in glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PDH) activity, the key enzyme of the oxidative pentose pathway. We also observed a mitochondria shutdown in infected cells and mitochondrial swelling in pure neural leprosy nerves. The classic Warburg effect described in macrophages infected by Mycobacterium avium was not observed in our model, which presented a drastic reduction in lactate generation and release by infected Schwann cells. This effect was followed by a decrease in lactate dehydrogenase isoform M (LDH-M) activity and an increase in cellular protection against hydrogen peroxide insult in a pentose phosphate pathway and GSH-dependent manner. M. leprae infection success was also dependent of the glutathione antioxidant system and its main reducing power source, the pentose pathway, as demonstrated by a 50 and 70% drop in intracellular viability after treatment with the GSH synthesis inhibitor buthionine sulfoximine, and aminonicotinamide (6-ANAM), an inhibitor of G6PDH 6-ANAM, respectively. We concluded that M. leprae could modulate host cell glucose metabolism to increase the cellular reducing power generation, facilitating glutathione regeneration and consequently free-radical control. The impact of this regulation in leprosy neuropathy is discussed.  相似文献

Under various pathophysiological muscle-wasting conditions, such as diabetes and starvation, a family of ubiquitin ligases, including muscle-specific RING-finger protein 1 (MuRF1), are induced to target muscle proteins for degradation via ubiquitination. We have generated transgenic mouse lines over-expressing MuRF1 in a skeletal muscle-specific fashion (MuRF1-TG mice) in an attempt to identify the in vivo targets of MuRF1. MuRF1-TG lines were viable, had normal fertility and normal muscle weights at eight weeks of age. Comparison of quadriceps from MuRF1-TG and wild type mice did not reveal elevated multi-ubiquitination of myosin as observed in human patients with muscle wasting. Instead, MuRF1-TG mice expressed lower levels of pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH), a mitochondrial key enzyme in charge of glycolysis, and of its regulator PDK2. Furthermore, yeast two-hybrid interaction studies demonstrated the interaction of MuRF1 with PDH, PDK2, PDK4, PKM2 (all participating in glycolysis) and with phosphorylase β (PYGM) and glycogenin (both regulating glycogen metabolism). Consistent with the idea that MuRF1 may regulate carbohydrate metabolism, MuRF1-TG mice had twofold elevated insulin blood levels and lower hepatic glycogen contents. To further examine MuRF1's role for systemic carbohydrate regulation, we performed glucose tolerance tests (GTT) in wild type and MuRF1-TG mice. During GTT, MuRF1-TG mice developed striking hyperinsulinaemia and hepatic glycogen stores, that were depleted at basal levels, became rapidly replenished. Taken together, our data demonstrate that MuRF1 expression in skeletal muscle re-directs glycogen synthesis to the liver and stimulates pancreatic insulin secretion, thereby providing a regulatory feedback loop that connects skeletal muscle metabolism with the liver and the pancreas during metabolic stress.  相似文献

Genotypically different host specific pathotypes of Bursaphelenchus xylophilus have been identified. These pathotypes elicit different responses in pines depending on susceptibility, tolerance, or resistance. Continued passage of some of these pathotypes on fungal cultures leads to conversion to nonparasitic populations. These populations metabolize carbon substrates to ethanol by an anaerobic pathway, while operating some level of a phosphoenolpyruvate (PEP)-succinate pathway to excrete succinate-lactate and malate. On the other hand, parasitic populations metabolize glucose to lactate-succinate, mainly by a PEP-succinate pathway, and maintain redox balance through glycerol production. Ethanol and malate are not excreted by parasitic populations.  相似文献
