Serological surveys of rubella antibody were carried out using the hemagglutination-inhibition test, with a view to studying the distribution of seroimmune individuals according to age and intermingling with other populations. Specimens were collected from different age groups including infants, children and adults, among the inhabitants of Montreal from 1963 to 1968. From the results obtained it was possible to establish the pattern of rubella antibody development in this urban community. Surveys were also conducted among the inhabitants of Les Iles de la Madeleine, a Canadian island in the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and among the population of Easter Island, an isolated island in the South Pacific remote from any large land mass.It was seen that, among the inhabitants of Montreal, presumably maternally acquired rubella antibody was present in 95% or more of the infants, the same percentage of seroimmune individuals as was found among the adult women 25 to 30 years of age. Passively acquired rubella antibodies decreased rapidly, attaining their lowest levels among children 1 to 2 years old. Rubella infection occurred in young children and its incidence rose steeply from school age to adolescence, leaving 7 to 9% of the adults without antibody. The highest geometric mean antibody titres were found among children 4 to 10 years of age.The same pattern of rubella antibody development was found among the population of Les Iles de la Madeleine, except that in adults the percentages of seropositives reached practically 100%. Antibody titres decreased with advancing age and became lower than those found among children.Detection of rubella antibody in serum samples derived from the inhabitants of Easter Island indicated that this population had experienced rubella infection not long before the Canadian Medical Expedition of 1964-1965. This status is determined from the high proportion of seroimmune individuals in each age group and the uniformly high antibody titre.Island populations appear to represent the ideal subjects for estimating the duration of the immunity conferred by any attenuated rubella vaccine that will eventually be licensed.  相似文献

Age composition and the rate of growth of kaluga Acipenser dauricus from the estuary of the Amur and the Amur lagoon have been analyzed. Differences in the distribution of juvenile and mature individuals of kaluga in the river estuary and the lagoon were revealed. Males are dominant among mature individuals aged 18–26 years, and females are dominanat at an age 27–43 years. Females and males of the same age do not differ in length and body weight. A decrease in the rate of linear and gravimetric growth of mature individuals at the modern stage (2005–2008) compared to the period of 1965–1982 was revealed. Juvenile individuals of kaluga from the near-estuarine part of the Amur and its lagoon are inferior in the rate of growth to fish of the same age caught in the river channel, 500 km to the south.  相似文献

Timing of spring migration and breeding and their interaction with climate change has been widely studied in recent years, but the possible changes in timing of autumn migration have gained less attention. This work focuses on autumn migration and provides the first multi‐species individual‐based study of how hatching date affects the autumn migration date and migration age by using nestling ring data and re‐trappings of the same individuals during the autumn migration at the Hanko Bird Observatory, Finland. We studied three potentially multibrooded passerines (great tit, blue tit and coal tit) and two single‐brooded birds of prey (goshawk, sparrowhawk), all partially migratory short‐distance migrants. Individuals from late broods migrated at a younger age in all tit species and also in hawks the late hatched individuals tended to migrate at a younger age than the early‐hatched individuals. Late‐hatched individuals migrated later than early‐hatched individuals in blue and coal tits, where the latest hatchers represented second brood individuals. Based on our results, the time from hatching to autumn migration is not constant even among individuals of the same population. Our study indicates that climate warming induced advancement of avian breeding may cause changes in the timing of autumn migration through the frequency of second broods.  相似文献

Miniature pigs are useful model animals for humans because they have similar anatomy and digestive physiology to humans and are easy to breed and handle. In this study, whole blood microarray analyses were conducted to evaluate variations of correlation among individuals and ages using specific pathogen-free (SPF) Clawn miniature pigs. Whole blood RNA is easy to handle compared to isolated white blood cell RNA and can be used for health and disease monitoring and animal control. In addition, whole blood is a heterogeneous mixture of subpopulation cells. Once a great change occurs in composition and expressing condition of subpopulations, their associated change will be reflected on whole blood RNA. From 12 to 30 weeks of age, fractions of lymphocytes, monocytes, neutrophils, eosinophils, and basophils in white blood cells showed insignificant differences with age as a result of ANOVA analysis. This study attempted to identify characteristics of age-related gene expression by taking into account the change in the number of expressed genes by age and similarities of gene expression intensity between individuals. As a result, the number of expressed genes was less in fetal stage and infancy period but increased with age, reaching a steady state of gene expression after 20 weeks of age. Variation in gene expression intensity within the same age was great in fetal stage and infancy period, but converged with age. The variation between 20 and 30 weeks of age was comparable to that among 30 weeks individuals. These results indicate that uniformity of laboratory animals is expected for miniature pigs after 20 weeks of age. Furthermore, a possibility was shown that whole blood RNA analysis is applicable to evaluation of physiological state.  相似文献

For methodological or other reasons, a variety of skeletal elements are analyzed and subsequently used as a basis for describing general bone loss and mass. However, bone loss and mass may not be uniform within and among skeletal elements of the same individual because of biomechanical factors. We test the hypothesis that a homogeneity in bone mass exists among skeletal elements of the same individual. Measures indicative of bone mass were calculated from the midshafts of six skeletal elements from the same individuals (N = 41). The extent of intraskeletal variability in bone mass (relative cortical area) was then examined for the entire sample, according to age, sex, and pathological status. Bird species often use flight calls to engage in social behavior, for instance maintain group cohesion and to signal individual identity, kin or social associations, or breeding status of the caller. Additional uses also exist, in particular among migrating songbirds for communication during nocturnal migration. However, our understanding of the information that these vocalizations convey is incomplete, especially in nocturnal scenarios. To examine whether information about signaler traits could be encoded in flight calls we quantified several acoustic characteristics from calls of a nocturnally migrating songbird, the American Redstart. We recorded calls from temporarily captured wild specimens during mist-netting at the Powdermill Avian Research Center in Rector, PA. We measured call similarity among and within individuals, genders, and age groups. Calls from the same individual were significantly more similar to one another than to the calls of other individuals, and calls were significantly more similar among individuals of the same sex than between sexes. Flight calls from hatching-year and after hatching-year individuals were not significantly different. Our results suggest that American Redstart flight calls may carry identifiers of gender and individual identity. To our knowledge, this is the first evidence of individuality or sexual dimorphism in the flight calls of a migratory songbird. Furthermore, our results suggest that flight calls may have more explicit functions beyond simple group contact and cohesion. Nocturnal migration may require coordination among numerous individuals, and the use of flight calls to transmit information among intra- and conspecifics could be advantageous. Applying approaches that account for such individual and gender information may enable more advanced research using acoustic monitoring.  相似文献

Individual growth patterns in red-spotted masu salmon,Oncorhynchus masou rhodurus, were examined by mark and recapture in a mountain stream, central Japan. The growth pattern varied substantially among individuals of the same age cohort in the stream. Mean absolute growth rates of the individuals were neither significantly different between years, study sections along the stream course, or sexes, but showed significant differences between seasons. No correlation was found between the individual growth rate of fish and the area of pools they inhabited. However, there was considerable growth variation among inhabitants of the same pool. Within a pool, larger individuals grew more rapidly than smaller ones, despite there being no significant relationship between individual growth rates and initial body weights in the stream overall. Individual growth differences probably resulted from growth depensation caused by intraspecific competition within individual pools.  相似文献

The life history of an organism can be viewed as the combination of allocations made to maintenance, growth, and reproduction. Allocation to these functions are constrained by trade-offs as increased investment to one function may happen at the expense of another. Moreover, because fecundity and survival probabilities are affected by both the state of an individual and by its surrounding environment, optimal allocation to reproduction and growth may vary with both individual size/age and with the habitat in which it lives. In this study we aim to describe how flower production varies with individual plant age and leaf production among different patches of the perennial herb Corydalis intermedia. We take advantage of the construction of the underground storage organ to estimate the age of individual plants which allows us tacitly to relate flower and leaf production to individual age and successional status of the patch. We sampled all individuals present in nine patches from the same forest and estimated their age, flower production and total leaf area. The age distributions showed that each patch was most often dominated by a few and consecutive age classes. In patches where individuals had the oldest mean age, very few or no juvenile age classes were found suggesting that recruitment had ceased. Based on the age distribution of the patches we propose that the dynamics may best be described as metapopulational with colonization of newly formed open forest gaps and a successionally determined extinction as the patch gradually becomes too shaded for recruitment. Both mean flower production, leaf area and age varied significantly among patches. Flower production increased with both increasing age and leaf area. We found no indication of a trade off between reproduction and vegetative growth since flower production showed a positive relation with leaf production even after removing the effect of age. Number of flowers produced by plants of the same age but growing in different patches did not vary indicating that the difference among patches mainly was due to a difference in age distribution. No individuals produced flowers before they reached an estimated age of three years. Production of flowers followed a power function with increasing age. Our data suggests that C. intermedia plants change their allocation strategy with age investing a relatively large amount of energy in flower production immediately after the immature growth phase when recruitment in their patch may be high. Production of flowers then reaches a plateau around the age of 11 years after which number of flowers produced stays constant. Social insect colonies are characterized by extensive interactions among individuals, exchanges that can also potentially transmit pathogens. The large majority of these social interactions in a honeybee colony result from food transfer among individuals. Since colony hunger is likely to have a significant influence on these interactions, we investigated its effect on the distribution of food within the colony. By pulsing two colonies having different amounts of stored food with a radioactive label, we found that a starved colony sent out a larger number of foragers, brought in more food, and stored more of it than the satiated colony. We also found that the food brought into a starved colony was distributed more uniformly within each age class than that in the satiated colony. The queen and the young individuals received the lowest exposure to the label even though the label entered different regions of the colony at the same rate. The satiation level of the colony did not influence the relative exposures of different age groups to the label but a higher amount of it was stored in the hungry colony. We discuss the significance of these results in terms of the role played by the organizational structure of the honeybee colony on the transmission dynamics of an infectious disease.  相似文献

Kohlschutter–Tonz syndrome (KTS) is a rare autosomal-recessive disorder of childhood onset, and it is characterized by global developmental delay, spasticity, epilepsy, and amelogenesis imperfecta. In 12 KTS-affected individuals from a Druze village in northern Israel, homozygosity mapping localized the gene linked to the disease to a 586,513 bp region (with a LOD score of 6.4) in chromosomal region 16p13.3. Sequencing of genes (from genomic DNA of an affected individual) in the linked region revealed chr16: 4,848,632 G>A, which corresponds to ROGDI c.469C>T (p.Arg157). The nonsense mutation was homozygous in all affected individuals, heterozygous in 10 of 100 unaffected individuals from the same Druze community, and absent from Druze controls from elsewhere. Wild-type ROGDI localizes to the nuclear envelope; ROGDI was not detectable in cells of affected individuals. All affected individuals suffered seizures, were unable to speak, and had amelogenesis imperfecta. However, age of onset and the severity of mental and motor handicaps and that of convulsions varied among affected individuals homozygous for the same nonsense allele.  相似文献

Two processes are generally mixed when considering ungulate sexual segregation: the social segregation which appears to be a rule in polygamous ungulate species and the spatial segregation which is facultative. Early in life, there is evidence that males and females exhibit different levels of activity and patterns of interaction which could lead to behavioural incompatibility. It is proposed that juvenile females, differently motivated than males to interact socially, may soon avoid the pseudo-sexual and agonistic male behavioural components. as body and behavioural dimorphism increase with age, the behavioural incompatibility would be intensified. Since adults often interact agonistically with or avoid them, juveniles will attend to interact with same-sex peers of similar status. Because social experiences are occurring since early stages of development, i.e., during sensitive periods, a social auto-segregation by sex/age classes is expected. Then population would be structured in coherent socio-spatial sets of compatible individuals, sharing similar constraints and properties. Around the birth period, females become asocial promoting a temporal social segregation. Costs linked to gestation and lactation may make females more dependent on water and rich food resources. Female with offspring are also likely to select areas where the risks of predation are reduced, sometimes at detriment to energy intake, while other animals exhibit opportunistic feeding behaviour, resulting in seasonally ecological segregation. Body growth channels a lot of energy for males which are expected to use the best feeding areas. However, indirect competition for the same resources may result in a spatial segregation between the sexes. Sex- and age-specific activity budgets are suspected to favour social and spatial segregations. The social segregation among males and females use exclusive ranges. Whether spatial segregation results in ecological segregation would however depend on habitat heterogeneity, population density, local ecological conditions and the biological cycle periods. It is suggested that spatial segregation will occur not only between the sexes but also among males. If populations are structured in coherent socio-spatial units, spatial segregation among individuals of age and sex classes may result from indirect interactions between sets of individuals (of same age and sex class), that may be translated as an indirect competition between individuals. Studies on ethogenesis are considered as fundamental as they allow to know on what basis social and spatial segregations are set up. In particular, studies on behavioural development could highlight how social segregation between adults may result from a process that originates much earlier in the life of animals. By considering the role of behaviour, we defend the idea that social and spatial segregations may be logically distinguished.  相似文献

Variation in group size is characteristic of most social species. The extent to which individuals sort among group sizes based on age may yield insight into why groups vary in size and the age‐specific costs and benefits of different social environments. We investigated the age composition of Cliff Swallow (Petrochelidon pyrrhonota) colonies of different sizes over 18 yr at a long‐term study site in western Nebraska, USA. Using years elapsed since banding as a relative measure of age for over 194,000 birds, we found that the proportion of age‐class‐1 swallows (birds banded as nestlings or juveniles or adults in the year of banding) of both sexes increased in larger colonies and at colony sites becoming active later in the summer. Age composition was unrelated to how often a particular colony site was used. The effect of colony size most likely reflected the fact that older birds return to the same colony site in successive years even when the colony size there decreases, and that yearlings and immigrants benefit more from larger colonies than do older, more experienced individuals. The date effect probably resulted in part from later spring arrival by younger and/or immigrant swallows. At fumigated sites where ectoparasitic swallow bugs (Oeciacus vicarius) had been removed, age composition did not vary with either colony size or colony initiation date. The patterns reported here appear to be driven partially by the presence of ectoparasites and suggest that the hematophagous bugs influence variation in Cliff Swallow group composition. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that variation in colony size reflects, in part, age‐based sorting of individuals among groups.  相似文献

Background

The inverse association between education and mortality has grown stronger the last decades in many countries. During the same period, gains in life expectancy have been concentrated to older ages; still, old-age mortality is seldom the focus of attention when analyzing trends in the education-mortality gradient. It is further unknown if increased educational inequalities in mortality are preceded by increased inequalities in morbidity of which hospitalization may be a proxy.

Methods

Using administrative population registers from 1971 and onwards, education-specific annual changes in the risk of death and hospital admission were estimated with complimentary log-log models. These risk changes were supplemented by estimations of the ages at which 25, 50, and 75% of the population had been hospitalized or died (after age 60).

Results

The mortality decline among older people increasingly benefitted the well-educated over the less well-educated. This inequality increase was larger for the younger old, and among men. Educational inequalities in the age of a first hospital admission generally followed the development of growing gaps, but at a slower pace than mortality and inequalities did not increase among the oldest individuals.

Conclusions

Education continues to be a significant predictor of health and longevity into old age. That the increase in educational inequalities is greater for mortality than for hospital admissions (our proxy of overall morbidity) may reflect that well-educated individuals gradually have obtained more possibilities or resources to survive a disease than less well-educated individuals have the last four decades.  相似文献

This study deals with maturation and aging of the vertebrae in Japanese macaques (Macaca fuscata fuscata) of known chronological age. The samples used were 103 skeletons of captive raised Japanese macaques varying in age from 6-23 years. Epiphyseal union between the vertebral body and the epiphyseal disk (epiphyseal ring, annular epiphysis) and degenerative changes of the vertebrae were macroscopically examined. It was revealed that vertebral epiphyseal union develops comparatively rapidly in the sacral and cervical vertebrae, moderately in the lumbar vertebrae, and slowly in the thoracic vertebrae. It was found that, as a central tendency, the vertebral epiphyseal union begins at about 6 years of age, progresses lineally in proportion to age, and completes at about 23 years of age. However, considerable variation in developmental states of union was observed among individuals of the same age. Concerning vertebral degenerative changes, few were observed among the present samples. Compared with the other primates with regard to the timing of vertebral maturation, shortening of duration of maturation was found among humans. Human vertebrae may have become an early-maturing organ in order to sustain the increased loading that is accompanied by the adoption of habitual erect posture and bipedal locomotion.  相似文献

1. Senescence reflects age-dependent changes in residual reproductive value. Annual survival rates of the barn swallow Hirundo rustica L. increased from 1- to 2-year-old individuals, but decreased among 5 years old or older individuals. Estimates of age-dependent reproductive value showed a similar pattern.
2. Longitudinal data from two long-term population studies were used to test whether a number of different measures of performance (condition-dependent morphological traits, migratory performance, reproductive success, intensity of parasitism) changed among individuals when reaching old age.
3. The length of the outermost tail feathers (a secondary sexual character) decreased among old individuals, while two measures of individual developmental instability increased with age. Migratory performance decreased in old barn swallows as reflected by a delay in spring arrival at the breeding grounds. Reproductive performance measured as seasonal reproductive success decreased with age. The intensity of infestations with an haematophagous mite and a mallophagous ectoparasite increased among old barn swallows.
4. These results suggest that the condition-dependent secondary sexual character, developmental stability, and measures of migratory and reproductive performance deteriorated, and the frequency of parasitism increased among old individuals. Ageing was thus associated with a general deterioration of performance.  相似文献

Communicating cancer risk and recommending adequate control programs is central for genetic counseling. Individuals affected by hereditary nonpolyposis colorectal cancer (HNPCC) are at about 80% life-time risk of colorectal cancer and for female carriers 40-60% risk of endometrial cancer and 10-15% risk of ovarian cancer. The perceived risk among mutation carriers may, however, deviate from the risk communicated and has been demonstrated to influence adherence to control programs. We investigated the perceived cancer risk among HNPCC mutation carriers (n = 47) and correlated the findings to individual characteristics. A perceived risk of colorectal cancer above 60% was reported by 22/45 individuals, and only one out of five mutation carriers reported a perceived risk > 80%. Female mutation carriers, individuals below age 50, and individuals who received their oncogenetic counseling within 1 year prior to the study reported higher, albeit not significantly, perceived risks of colorectal cancer. Higher perceived risks were also reported by individuals who had lost a parent to HNPCC-related cancer at early age, whereas individuals with a personal history of cancer did not report a higher perceived risk. Regarding gynecological cancer, 6/18 females reported a perceived risk of 40-60% for endometrial cancer, whereas the remaining women both underestimated and overestimated their risk, and none of the women referred to the risk of ovarian cancer. We conclude that despite educational efforts and an increasing amount of data on the cancer risk in HNPCC, a minority of the mutation carriers report a perceived risk at the same level as that communicated during oncogenetic counseling.  相似文献

This study reports on the social interactions of juvenile Japanese monkeys (1–5 years old) living in their natural habitat. Juvenile males preferred to associate and play with males of the same age. Male-male interactions initiated by a subordinate of the same age or by an older frequently involved play. Juvenile females tended to interact with younger individuals, and to avoid older males. Older females (4–5 years old) tended to avoid one another. Sibling pairs had high frequencies of interaction, although the occurrences of particular types of interactions varied from pair to pair. Patterns of social relations among adults are discussed in relation to juvenile behavior.  相似文献

1. Physiological metamorphosis accompanied by an ecological habitat shift is a widespread life-history phenomenon, and both age and size at metamorphosis are highly variable in many organisms. In this study, age and size at metamorphosis (defined as the transition from the last naupliar to the first copepodite stage) were quantified for four species of freshwater copepods to determine the scale on which these two traits vary, if age and size at metamorphosis are equally variable, and if variation at metamorphosis is related to variation in newborn size. 2. Measurements of laboratory-reared and field-caught individuals show that age and size at metamorphosis, together with newborn size, vary among siblings, between families within a population, between populations of one species and between closely related species. 3. In all populations, age at metamorphosis was the most variable trait, a result observed in many other organisms. Most of the variation in age at metamorphosis could be explained by differences between families within a population, while differences among siblings from the same clutch accounted for most of the variation in size at metamorphosis. 4. Although newborn size was variable, differences in this trait could not fully account for variation observed at metamorphosis. Newborn size differed among populations, but most interpopularional differences disappeared by the rime metamorphosis was reached. In particular, size at metamorphosis appears to be tightly constrained in freshwater copepods. 5. Age and size at metamorphosis were not equally variable among species, either. Species-specific metamorphic envelopes (joint distributions of age and size at metamorphosis) result from differences in trait means, variances and covariances, and suggest very different larval growth trajectories among three of the species examined.  相似文献

Animal mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) is believed to have evolved under intense selection for economy of the size of the molecule. Among scallop species mtDNA size may vary by a factor of two and among conspecific individuals by as much as 25%. We have examined the possibility that large mtDNA size differences may be associated with fitness in the deep sea scallop Placopecten magellanicus by comparing shell lengths of individuals with different copy numbers of a large mtDNA repeated sequence. Among juvenile cohorts of same age, shell length is known to be a good index of overall fitness in marine bivalves and it is shown here to be affected by differences in nuclear genotype, expressed as the degree of enzyme heterozygosity. We have observed no correlation between shell length and mtDNA length and interpreted this to mean that variation in the size of animal mtDNA is effectively neutral to the forces of natural selection acting on the individual. This type of mtDNA variation must, therefore, be explained in terms of biases in the molecular mechanisms causing expansion or contraction of the molecule, differential replication rates of mtDNA molecules of different size, and the stochastic assortment of mtDNA size classes among individuals.  相似文献

Reduction of telomere length has been postulated to be a causal factor in cellular aging. Human telomeres terminate in tandemly arranged repeat arrays consisting of the (TTAGGG) motif. The length of these arrays in cells from human mitotic tissues is inversely related to the age of the donor, indicating telomere reduction with age. In addition to telomere length differences between different age cohorts, considerable variation is present among individuals of the same age. To investigate whether this variation can be ascribed to genetic influences, we have measured the size of terminal restriction fragments (TRFs) in HaeIII-digested genomic DNA from 123 human MZ and DZ twin pairs 2-95 years of age. The average rate of telomere shortening was 31 bp/year, which is similar to that observed by others. Statistical analysis in 115 pairs 2-63 years of age indicates a 78% heritability for mean TRF length in this age cohort. The individual differences in mean TRF length in blood, therefore, seem to a large extent to be genetically determined.  相似文献
