This paper describes the survival rates of 763 rhesus monkeys maintained at the Yerkes Regional Primate Research Center (YRPRC). The survival rates were determined by methods used to calculate survival rates of human populations. The monkeys were divided into 3 groups based on their specific life histories. Group I monkeys were wild-born and were housed singly from the time they came into captivity at about 2 years of age. Group II monkeys were born either in the wild or in captivity and were housed in social groups since their acquisition at ages 2 to 8 years. Group III monkeys were born at the YRPRC and housed in social groups. Due to these differences in life histories, direct comparisons among survival curves of the 3 groups are, at best, tenuous, as are comparisons with populations maintained at other facilities. In the present study the highest mortality rate occurred during the first month of life. The maximum life span attained in our group I was 35 years, with only 6.2% of monkeys in this group attaining an age beyond 30 years.  相似文献

This paper offers a comparison of the reproductive biology of the Japanese macaques of Arashiyama, Japan and the free-ranging rhesus macaques of Silver Springs, Florida, U.S.A. The data indicate that rhesus macaques of Silver Springs have a higher reproductive rate than the Japanese macaques of Arashiyama. The reproducive rate of the rhesus monkeys over three birth seasons is 82% and that for the Japanese macaque is 53%. The higher reproductive rate of rhesus monkeys is accomplished through an earlier onset of sexual maturation (4 and 5 years for the rhesus and 5 and 6 years for the Japanese monkeys) and a shorter interbirth interval (14.27±5.54 months for rhesus and 18.00±6.57 months for Japanese monkeys). It is suggested that, because of the relatively harsh winters experienced by Japanese macaques, the slower reproductive rate of the Japanese monkeys has been selected for in order to enable females to lengthen the time in which maternal care is extended to their offspring.  相似文献

Tetanus was a major cause of mortality in the free-ranging population of rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago. From 1977 to 1984 the mean (±1 SD) annual total mortality rate (excluding neonatal deaths within 48 h postpartum, abortions, and stillbirths) was 6.39% ± .94%, and the mean annual tetanus mortality rate was 1.33% ± .45%. Tetanus deaths accounted for 19.5% of the total mortality in the colony. In 1985, all monkeys on the island, except infants and six adult monkeys, were given primary inoculations of tetanus toxoid. The following year, boosters were administered, and yearlings received primary inoculations. One fatal case of tetanus and one recovery from mild disease occurred in uninoculated adult monkeys in 1985, but no additional cases have been observed since. For 1985–1986 the mean annual total mortality rate was 3.69% ± .05%, and the mean annual tetanus mortality rate was .08% ± .08%. Thus, during the 2 years after inoculation against tetanus, the mean annual total mortality rate and the mean annual tetanus mortality rate declined by 42.2% and 94.0%, respectively, when compared to the 8-year period (1977–1984) prior to inoculation. These differences were significant [(χ2 = 12.48; P < .005), (χ2 = 16.94; P < .005)]. The elimination of tetanus infections through mass inoculation of the Cayo Santiago colony is expected to have a profound impact on the demography of the population by increasing the rate of population growth, by decreasing the differential rates of increase of the component social groups, and by changing the age distribution of the population.  相似文献

The sexual behavior of a group of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was studied for 13 consecutive months in an attempt to determine whether or not sexual activity occurred year-round, and the importance of sexual attraction to rhesus monkey social organization.Estrous behavior was seen both inter-menstrually and peri-menstrually, producing a shorter mean estrous cycle length than reported by other workers. New data was gathered on the interrelationships among age, dominance rank, and sexual activity; son-mother and brothersister matings; and sexual favoritism among free-ranging rhesus monkeys.A few females who failed to conceive during the fall breeding season showed cyclic estrous behavior throughout the entire annual cycle. Hypotheses are given as to possible physiological bases for birth season sexual cycles.Several forms of inter-animal bonding, including sexual bonding, are enumerated, and their importance to rhesus monkey social organization discussed.  相似文献

This cross-sectional study investigates the relationship between parity, bone mineral density, and spontaneous osteopenia/osteoporosis in a large skeletal population of female rhesus macaques (Macaca mulatta) from the free-ranging colony of Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico. The sample consists of 119 mature female monkeys aged 4.0-22.2 years at time of death. The data consist of measurements of bone mineral content (BMC) and bone mineral density (BMD), obtained from dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) of the last lumbar vertebra. After controlling for age, there is a significant increase in BMD of the spine with increasing parity (P = 0.0006), up to a parity of 7 offspring. Thus, high parity initially has a positive effect on BMD in female rhesus monkeys, but this positive effect disappears with parities that are greater than 7 offspring. After controlling for parity, however, age has a negative (P = 0.015) effect on BMD, beginning several years after the attainment of peak BMD (age 9.5 years). Thus, it appears that parity initially mitigates the effects of aging, but the positive effect of parity on BMD is eventually overwhelmed by the aging process. Mean BMC and BMD values are higher in parous females compared to nulliparous females in the same age range. Similarly, females with low parity have significantly lower mean BMD values than do age-matched high-parity controls, and the frequency of osteopenia and osteoporosis is greater in low-parity females. Forty-three percent (43%) of the osteopenic/osteoporotic females in the sample are members of the low-parity group, even though it composes only 13% (16/119) of the entire sample. This study demonstrates that the free-ranging female rhesus monkeys from Cayo Santiago are a good nonhuman primate model for the study of bone mineral density, parity, osteopenia, and osteoporosis.  相似文献

1981-1985年,在海南岛南湾半岛开展了对野生猕猴种群繁殖的研究。猕猴的发情交配期为11月至次年3月,产仔期为4-8月,怀孕期约177天。3年中,有70%的性成熟母猴每年产1胎,其它的产2胎或1胎。在连续两年中产仔间隔294-441天,平均362±16天,自1978年以来,年均繁殖率为53.8-100%,平均77.8±13.85%。雄性成熟年龄为3-4岁;约38%的雌性在3.5岁时开始怀孕,4岁产仔。低等级的雌性生育较少,雄性猴离群,无任何雄性终身在群内称王,这些都可避免种群衰退,利于种群生长和发展的极好生物学对策。  相似文献

A management procedure was developed for a harem breeding colony of rhesus monkeys to reduce trauma-related injuries and deaths resulting from the periodic removal of pregnant monkeys for research and their subsequent return to the population. Lower morbidity and mortality rates, a reduced mean conception interval, and a higher mean conception rate occurred when monkeys were maintained in permanent harems to which returning females were reintroduced compared to new social groups formed from aggregates of unfamiliar animals.  相似文献

During five years of birth season fieldwork, we observed two births and three peri-birth instances of behavior of free-ranging rhesus living in Kathmandu, Nepal. These constitute the first two recorded free-ranging rhesus births, and we compare them to the behavior which has been observed in captivity and expected in the wild. The free-ranging parturition behavior was characterized by a general lack of contact with other troop members and by overall inconspicuousness. In the first birth we observed, the troop moved about 70 m up the hill, leaving the laboring female behind on an open hillside. Two males, a female and a juvenile returned and rested about 20 m from the delivering female. During the second delivery, the female stayed with the troop and seemed to participate normally in most troop interactions, although she avoided physical contact with other troop members. We propose that this near-normal behavior may help to assure successful parturition by allowing the female the needed social isolation and inconspicuousness without any loss of troop protection. It may also partly explain why births have not been observed during previous studies. Observations of rhesus parturition behavior reported from studies of captive monkeys and reports from other free-ranging primate studies are compared with our data.  相似文献

The male infant rhesus monkey (Macaca mulatta) undergoes a period of testicular activation similar to that seen in the human infant. Plasma testosterone (T) concentrations rise after birth, reaching levels of about 500 ng/dl at 1-3 mo of age and then fall to approximately 50 ng/dl at 60 mo. The plasma T metabolic clearance rates (MCRT) and production rates (PRT) were measured in two rhesus infants at 1 and 6 mo of age to determine the mechanism of the observed increase in plasma T. While there was little change in the MCRT between 1 and 6 mo, PRT was much higher at 1 mo than at 60 mo of age. These observations are consistent with the hypothesis that the increased plasma testosterone levels in infant rhesus monkeys reflect an increased production of testosterone rather than an altered metabolic disposition of the hormone.  相似文献

Prior to 1985 tetanus was a major cause of mortality in the free-ranging colony of rhesus monkeys on Cayo Santiago, accounting for almost a quarter of annual deaths. In 1985 and 1986 all animals (except infants) received primary and booster doses, respectively, of tetanus toxoid. In subsequent years primary immunizations were given to all yearlings, and boosters were administered to all 2-year-old animals during the annual capture of the colony. The main objectives of the tetanus immunization program were to reduce the pain and suffering caused by tetanus infections and to decrease mortality in the colony. Other objectives were to evaluate the efficacy of the two-dose tetanus toxoid immunization protocol and to determine whether additional boosters might be required to provide adequate long-term protection against tetanus infections. The immediate effect of the mass immunization program was the elimination of clinical tetanus infections in the population and a 42.2% reduction in the overall mortality rate. Since the immunization program began, no cases of tetanus have been observed in the colony, except in two unimmunized infants, and it has not been necessary to give tertiary injections of tetanus toxoid to maintain protection against infection. A sample collected in 2004 of the original cohort of monkeys immunized in 1985 and 1986 showed that 93.3% (14/15) had protective tetanus antibody titers (>0.01 IU/ml) at the ages of 20-23 years, which is close to the life expectancy of the Cayo Santiago rhesus macaques. Two intramuscular doses of tetanus toxoid provided long-term, if not lifelong, protection against tetanus for rhesus monkeys living in a tropical clime where tetanus is enzootic and the risk of infection is great.  相似文献

The knee joints of aged (greater than or equal to 15 years) rhesus macaques raised and maintained in individual cages were compared with those of formerly free-ranging monkeys using radiographs and measures of passive joint flexion and extension. Free-ranging monkeys had a significantly higher prevalence (p less than 0.01) and severity (p less than 0.0003) of degenerative joint diseases (osteoarthritis and/or pseudogout) based on radiographic findings and significantly (p less than 0.02) more restricted passive knee joint extension than caged animals of the same age.  相似文献

A serological survey of simian virus 40 (SV 40) was conducted by an immune adherence hemagglutination (IAHA) test in breeding monkeys. Of a total of 356 monkeys tested, 168 (47.2%) were seropositive. All 168 seropositive monkeys were detected from 224 monkeys which were bred or kept in Japan for a long time. In contrast, none of the 132 monkeys which were newly imported from Southeast Asia was seropositive. If a comparison was made in the same breeding place, the positive rate of 80.4% (111/138) of Japanese monkeys was significantly (P less than 0.01) higher than the 59.5% (25/42) among rhesus monkeys. The positive rate and the IAHA titers were higher in older age group (greater than 5 years) but similar in male and female. These results indicated that SV 40 was highly prevalent among breeding monkeys in Japan.  相似文献

A rank reversal between two groups of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) was observed.The group which became dominant through the reversal had been transplanted from another free-ranging colony eight months before. The actions of peripheral adult males of this group were important in effecting the reversal. Support of the peripheral males by the rest of the group was crucial in effecting the reversal.The development of the reversal indicates that social tradition and individual relationships between monkeys are important in maintaining and establishing intergroup rank.  相似文献

The transcapillary escape rate and plasma clearance of fibrinogen were studied in six rhesus monkeys infected with Plasmodium coatneyi as well as in six control monkeys using 131I-fibrinogen as a tracer. The mean transcapillary escape rate of fibrinogen in the infected group was significantly higher than that of the control group. Both plasma volume and plasma fibrinogen concentration were also elevated in the infected group, these resulting in a significantly higher intravascular fibrinogen mass, plasma clearance rate, and outflux of fibrinogen from the intravascular to the extravascular compartments. Both effective capillary pore area/unit path length available for restricted diffusion and the specific permeability coefficient of plasma fibrinogen in the infected monkeys were also found to be significantly higher than those of the control group. These findings indicated that there was an increased leakage of plasma fibrinogen from the circulation into the extravascular space which was due either to increased capillary surface area and/or to an increased capillary permeability in rhesus monkeys infected with P. coatneyi.  相似文献

In an attempt to examine possible associations between stages of agespecific mortality and various causes of death, vital records of 159 male and 192 female crab-eating monkeys (Macaca fascicularis), housed as a single group, were analyzed. Survival and hazard rates associated with each of five distinct categories of causes of death were estimated for males and females, using the nonparametric kernel method. The obtained overall survival and hazard functions were similar to those reported previously for rhesus monkeys. Among two stages identified in age-specific mortality, the first stage, characterized by rapidly decreasing hazard rates up to about 1.5–2 years of age, was discriminated by the occurrence of deaths due to unfitness for postnatal life. The second stage lasted up to the age of 10–15 years and was largely characterized by a high incidence of violent deaths. The respective hazard rates in males and females attained peaks during the early reproductive period of life and markedly decreased thereafter. This pattern was interpreted to indicate that second stage mortality is unlikely related to senescence, but rather, seems to depend on extrinsic environmental factors. Thus, when considering overall hazard rates in Macaca fascicularis, the onset of senescence, as a result of the specific aspects of simian reproduction, may be hidden from view, and mortality due to aging may only be appreciable after 10 to 15 years of age. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In 1,506 hours of field observations on free-ranging rhesus monkeys in Kathmandu Valley, Nepal, in 1974 and 1975 18 cases of favorable social interactions between adult males and infants were observed. Eleven of these were brief encounters of play or grooming; seven were more extended cases of male care. One of the latter was a complete adoption of a neonatal orphan by a dominant male. This adoption was possessive and restrictive and it resulted in the death of the infant by starvation within three days. A similar adoption involving the same male occurred in 1976 and it also resulted in the death of the infant. Most of the favorable male-infant interactions occurred during the winter and spring when the infants were 6 to 12 months of age. These favorable social interactions involved eight males in six different troops, out of a total of about 48 males in 12 troops in our study population of approximately 600 monkeys. These observations are discussed in light of current sociobiological theories.  相似文献

The colony of free-ranging rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) on Cayo Santiago, Puerto Rico, was surveyed for leptospiral agglutinins. Only 5 (3%) of 169 monkeys (25% of the population) were seropositive (titers of ? 1:100). An additional 29 animals (17%) had titers ?1:50. The proportions of seropositive males and females were 22% and 18%, respectively, and twice as many adult as immature animals (32% vs. 15%) were positive. In most seropositive monkeys a single serogroup predominated, Icterohaemorrhagiae being recorded in nearly 60% of these animals. In a follow-up survey conducted a year later, 4% of 158 of the original monkeys were seropositive, with titers of from 1:100 to 1:200. None of 22 Rattus rattus captured on Cayo Santiago had agglutinins to pathogenic serovars. Despite contact with rats and ingestion of stagnant water, the serological evidence, the excellent clinical condition, low mortality, and high reproductive rates of the Cayo Santiago macaques indicate that leptospirosis is not a health problem in this free ranging monkey colony.  相似文献

Rhesus monkeys (Macaca mulatta) at the Nanwan peninsula of Hainan Island, China, have been observed in the field for 25 years, and have been studied intensively for eight years, beginning in 1981. There were about 115 monkeys in 5 natural groups when the Nanwan Reserve was founded in 1965. From 1965 to 1984, the number of groups increased from 5 to 19, and the total population increased from 115 to 930 individuals, an annual population increase of 12.7%. From 1984 to 1987, the population continued a slower rate of increase (8.9%) to approximately 1200 monkeys in 20 groups. The home ranges of each monkey group at Nanwan varied from 0.16 to 0.72 km2, with a mean and standard deviation of 0.37 ± 0.18. The size of the home range of the rhesus was affected by the quality of vegetation and rhesus population density. The average birth rate per year was 77.8 ± 13.9%, varying from 53.8% to 100% since 1978. From 1978, the birth rates of two food provisioned groups were higher in alternate years (x? = 91.7%) and lower in intervening years (x? = 68.8%; P = <0.01). A minority (26.5%) of females have given birth at 4 years of age, most at 5 years. The sex ratio of newborns in any one year varied from 0.3 to 3.5 males to females, with a mean and standard error of 1.09 ± 0.37 males to females.  相似文献

In order to control population growth rates, a decision was made to sterilize most of the free-ranging, wild rhesus macaque females of Silver Springs, Florida. Between October 1987 and March 1988, the five females who had been sterilized and released in the fall of 1986 were matched with five intact females in a behavioral study. While there were differences between the behaviors of the sterilized and intact females, the differences can be attributed more to differences in age, rank, and other factors than to the sterilization. Clinical data collected and reported on the monkeys is unremarkable.  相似文献

To evaluate potential heterosis resulting from breeding between rhesus macaques of Chinese and Indian origin in a captive social group, the rates of weight gain of Indian (nonhybrid) rhesus monkeys were compared with those of their hybrid (half Chinese/half Indian) peers. The coefficients for the linear regression of age on weight were estimated for each animal for each exact age between 1 and 4, when that regression is strictly linear, at which he/she lived in the group. The average rates of weight gain of hybrids and nonhybrids were compared using the t statistic. Both male and female hybrids exhibited statistically significantly higher rates of weight gain than their nonhybrid peers before, but not after, age 4. No evidence could be found that either hybrid status or rate of weight gain increases fitness, at least under captive conditions. © 1994 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献
