Pertya triloba (Asteraceae) is a perennial herb growing in the understory of deciduous broad-leaved forests in central Japan. Its capitulum consists of a single floret that differs from those of most other Asteraceae species. A bagging experiment clearly showed that breeding of P. triloba required cross-pollination. By using female fertility as a measure of pollination success, the effect of an attractive floral display on the threshold plant size for flowering in P. triloba was surveyed. The number of florets per plant in a P. triloba population was artificially adjusted between one and 30. In both control plants and experimental plants with adjusted floret number, the seed set increased with an increase in the number of florets per plant and became constant (60%) when the floret number per plant was more than 10. Thus, the number of florets per plant has an important role in attracting pollinators, and more than 10 florets per plant must be the effective floral display size. In the P. triloba population, 98.5% of the flowering plants had 10 or more flowers. The effective floral display size might be determined through the mutual relationship between plants and pollinators. The number of florets per plant increased with an increase in the plant leaf area. Therefore, the threshold plant size for flowering might be determined by the productivity needed to support an attractive floral display.  相似文献

Aims Foliar herbivory and water stress may affect floral traits attractive to pollinators. Plant genotypes may differ in their responses to the interplay between these factors, and evolution of phenotypic plasticity could be expected, particularly in heterogeneous environments. We aimed at evaluating the effects of simulated herbivory and experimental drought on floral traits attractive to pollinators in genetic families of the annual tarweed Madia sativa, which inhabits heterogeneous environments in terms of water availability, herbivore abundance and pollinator abundance.Methods In a greenhouse experiment with 15 inbred lines from a M. sativa population located in central Chile (Mediterranean-type climate), we measured the effects of apical bud damage and reduced water availability on: number of ray florets per flower head, length of ray florets, flower head diameter, number of open flower heads per plant, flowering plant height and flowering time.Important findings Apical damage and water shortage reduced phenotypic expression of floral traits attractive to pollinators via additive and non-additive effects. Plants in low water showed decreased height and had fewer and shorter ray florets, and fewer and smaller flower heads. Damaged plants showed delayed flowering, were less tall, and showed shorter ray florets and smaller flower heads. The number of ray florets was reduced by damage only in the low water treatment. Plant height, flowering time and number of flower heads showed among-family variation. These traits also showed genetic variation for plasticity to water availability. Ray floret length, flower head size and time to flowering showed genetic variation for plastic responses to apical damage. Plasticity in flowering time may allow M. sativa to adjust to the increased aridity foreseen for its habitat. Because genetic variation for plastic responses was detected, conditions are given for evolutionary responses to selective forces acting on plastic traits. We suggest that the evolution of adaptive floral plasticity in M. sativa in this ecological scenario (heterogeneous environments) would result from selective forces that include not only pollinators but also resource availability and herbivore damage.  相似文献

Abstract: The loss of the two inner (adaxial) microsporangia (MS) on the anthers is a shared, derived character for three species of the genus Microseris (Asteraceae). In a hybrid between M. douglasii (4 MS) and M. bigelovii (2 MS), one major gene and four modifier loci are responsible for the difference in MS number. The homozygous recessive (2 MS) genotype of the major gene is necessary but not sufficient for the reduction. In addition, at least five M. bigelovii (2 MS) alleles of the three major modifiers are needed for a stable 2‐MS phenotype in all florets of a plant. One, two or three M. bigelovii alleles of the modifiers cause the random reduction or loss of some of the adaxial MS. When the major gene and two modifiers specify 2 MS and only one modifier is homozygous for the M. douglasii (4 MS) alleles, sister plants can have any phenotype from pure 2 MS to pure 4 MS. Here, we examine the phenotypic expression of these genotypes raised under the normal winter annual conditions and under long‐day conditions. In all cases, the phenotypes vary among sister plants, but the range of variation (most notably under long‐day conditions) depends on the specific modifier gene contributing the M. douglasii alleles. The phenotypic variance in one of the genotypes was decreased by a factor of ten in the depauperate heads produced in the long‐day experiment. This effect is mediated by a dependence of the MS phenotype on the position of the floret relative to the edge of the flowering head (capitulum) and directly by the size of the capitulum. Genotypes specifying phenotypes with more or less precisely two or four MS in all florets show hardly any dependence on environmental or developmental factors. The significance of these observations lies in the non‐linear, “canalized” relationship between phenotypic expression and gene dosage, which shows how a qualitative morphological change dependent on a single major gene mutation can pass through a potentially maladaptive intermediate stage.  相似文献

Flowering-time, plant longevity and size of capitulum were studied in a common garden experiment on seven populations of annual Chaetanthera moenchioides derived from a strong latitudinal aridity gradient in the mediterranean climate area of Chile. Populations derived from the drier northern part of the latitudinal gradient showed significantly shorter flowering and fruiting phenology and smaller capitula under uniform growing conditions. Water stress experiments performed in the greenhouse induced further phenological hastening and a reduction in number of ray florets per capitulum. Population differentiation and the reaction norms in C. moenchioides agree with the predictions of genetic-assimilation given that the plastic response of the species under water stress mimics phenotypic differentiation that has evolved along the environmental gradient.  相似文献

Reproductive development in cereals is not easy to investigatebecause their quantitative response to environmental factorsmakes it difficult to synchronize the plants. In this paper,one of our aims was to assess whether Lolium temulentum strainCeres, a qualitative long-day grass, could serve as a modelof reproductive development for cereals. The morphological patternsfrom floral transition to seed set were studied. A flowering scale was established to evaluate developmentalrate during spike morphogenesis. Apex growth was found to increaseaccording to biphasic kinetics; double ridge appearance markedthe beginning of an exponential phase. Developmental progression and apical growth rate were both increasedby giving repeated long days. In contrast, the final numberof lateral spikelets (20–25) could not be manipulatedafter the beginning of long-day treatment. When plants were kept in continuous light from the beginningof induction, double ridges appeared on the fifth 24 h cycle.Spikelet initiation began in the upper mid-part of the spike,and then extended acro- and basipetally. The phase of spikeletinitiation lasted 6 d, with l?5 to 1?9 spikelets being produceddaily. Within each spikelet, florets were initiated at an averagerate of l?3 primordia per day and developed acropetally. Thefirst signs of apical site degeneration were observed in themost developed upper spikelets just before heading. Ear emergenceoccurred between the 20th and 25th cycles of continuous light;anthesis was observed 6 or 7 d later. The proportion of floretssetting grain averaged about 40%. Grains were produced mainlyin the lower spikelets while the upper mid-part of the inflorescenceshowed a much lower fertility rate. Complex developmental gradients described in this paper suggestthat L. temulentum could serve as a model of reproductive developmentin cereals, with the added advantage of flowering in responseto a single long-day. The association between mating systems and dispersal in plants has been studied mostly in cleistogamous species where, generally, seeds produced by cleistogamous (selfed) flowers are less dispersed than seeds produced by chasmogamous (potentially outcrossed) flowers. In heterocarpic Asteraceae, non-dispersing fruits (achenes) are produced at the periphery of the capitulum (outer florets) whereas dispersing achenes are produced by inner florets in the same capitulum. Since all the florets are protandrous, the outer floret developing first are in female phasis when anthesis of inner florets takes place. Thus, outer florets can be potentially selfed by the inner florets of the same capitulum whereas the latter must be pollinated by flowers of other capitula. Therefore outer florets should be more inbred than inner florets. To test this hypothesis, we measured the natural outcrossing rate in outer and inner florets using allozymes in three populations of the heterocarpic Crepis sancta. The results showed that the outcrossing rate was highest for non-dispersed achenes. Moreover, among the outcrossed achenes within a capitulum it was observed that the number of paternal parents of non-dispersing achenes was higher than for dispersing achenes. The pattern observed was therefore the opposite to the pattern of cleistogamous plants and contradicts the putative pollination mechanism we proposed for Asteraceae. The results agree with the predictions of sib competition theory which considers that outcrossing may minimize competitive interactions among relatives (sibs) falling near the mother plant. Higher outcrossing rate in outer florets could also occur because pollinators are more attracted to these florets.  相似文献

以采集自云南和贵州的21份灯盏花种质资源为材料,观测了它们的群体表型性状特征,并分析了这些表型性状的遗传多样性.结果表明:灯盏花种质资源的表型质量性状在居群内外均有丰富变异,不同质量性状的频率不同,并以多叶型的植株、绿色的茎、疏的茎毛、倒披针型的基生叶、全缘叶、锐尖的叶尖、花色淡紫和黄色的管状花冠口等为代表性表型性状.居群内各数量性状间以单株基生叶数和单株分枝数变异系数较高(均超过50%),而花序直径变异系数最低(18.14%);居群间各表型性状以株高和单序管状花数变异系数较高(52.98%和41.98%),而单株基生叶数和基生叶长变异系数较低(<20%).地理类群间表型分化系数为26.58%,地理类群内表型分化系数为73.42%.灯盏花性状表型多样性指数以株高最高(2.243),以单株分枝数和单株基生叶数较低(1.723和1.874),总体平均表型多样性指数为2.028;不同地理类群的表型多样性指数为1.589~1.890,并以楚雄地区最高,曲靖地区最低.研究发现,灯盏花种质资源具有丰富的质量和数量性状变异,多数性状的地理类群内变异大于地理类群间,且表型多样性指数相对较高,对其地理类群内变异的保护和利用对灯盏花育种具有重要的意义.  相似文献

The winter annual species Anthemis arvensis L. (Asteraceae) was grown for 3.5 months in the field under ambient or ambient plus supplemental UV-B radiation, simulating a 15% ozone depletion over Patras (38.3° N, 29.1° E). Enhanced UV-B radiation had no effect on the methanol extractable UV-B absorbing capacity of leaves, phenological and morphometric parameters of anthesis (flowering time, anthesis duration, head life span, number of heads per plant, number of tubular and ligulate florets per head, area per ligulate floret). Concerning the optical properties of heads, enhanced UV-B radiation had no significant effect on the extractable absorbance of both floret types nor on the spectral reflectance of the tubular florets. However, under UV-B supplementation the white ligulate florets exhibited a slight, statistically significant decrease of reflectance in the visible region of the spectrum. This may be due to structural changes of the floret surface, since microscopic examination under SEM revealed the papillae of the adaxial epidermal cells to be swollen. The above ground dry mass measured at plant harvest was not affected but a significant increase in root biomass (and accordingly in root/shoot ratio) was observed. We conclude that Anthemis arvensis is resistant against UV-B radiation damage. The possible consequences of UV-B induced structural changes on floret epidermis are discussed.  相似文献

Immature plants ofLavandula angustifolia x L. latifolia (cv. Twickle Purple) were sprayed with Atrinal and P293 when the growing shoots bore four to six expanded leaves. Atrinal increased the number of inflorescences per plant by stimulating otherwise dormant axillary buds on the shoots of the current season. The number of nonflowering shoots arising on older wood was also increased. The number of florets and the fresh weight per inflorescence were reduced, but the number of florets per plant was increased overall. Oil content per plant was doubled without altering oil composition or floret structure. Flower stalks were shortened below and between the floral nodes. Atrinal sprays achieved a machine-harvestable canopy in 3-year-old plants. Untreated plants required a full year longer to develop similar canopies. P293 and manual disbudding were not as effective as Atrinal. It is suggested that such spray treatments have a useful potential in reducing the time required for the development of the mature canopy form, and so obtaining earlier financial returns on establishment costs.  相似文献

The pappus of the annual species of Microseris usually consistsof a constant number of five paleaceous, awn-tipped scales.In some populations of Microseris douglasii, plants with variablenumbers of pappus parts, always five or fewer, are frequent.Here we study inbred lines derived from a plant with an averageof slightly less than five pappus parts (strain D40), from aplant with an average near three pappus parts (strain B14),and from F2 plants of a hybrid (D37) between these two strains.The average deviation from five pappus parts is subject to varioussources of non-genetic variation. The peripheral achenes ineach head have more pappus parts than the central ones, andthe overall average number decreases in later-formed capitulaof a plant. Both effects are strongly affected by environmentalfactors. Against this background, we show (polygenic) geneticvariation for the average deviation from five, and additionalheritable differences in the strength of the gradient in pappuspart numbers from the periphery to the centre of the capitulum,while the decrease of pappus part numbers in later-formed capitulais essentially identical in both parental strains, even in itsresponse to environmental factors. Galinsoga parviflora (gallant soldier), Asteraceae, produces two morphologically distinct achenes in a single capitulum: peripheral and central. The morphological, phenological and generative reproduction traits of the progeny derived from peripheral and central achenes that were cultivated in greenhouse conditions were analyzed. Differences between the progeny of various morph types were manifested at different stages of life. The plants of both morph types developed at a similar rate and they entered key phenological phases at the same time except for the flowering stage. The average height of the studied plants was similar on the same days of the experiment. The study showed that plants from peripheral achenes realize the generative reproduction in other pattern than plants from central achenes. The plants from central achenes produce more capitula per plant at the beginning of the fruiting stage, whereas plants from peripheral seeds achieve the highest number of capitula per plant at later stages. Finally, on day 130 of the experiment, the number of capitula per plant of both morphs equalized. At the early fruiting stage, the number of achenes per capitulum of plants from the two morphs did not differ significantly. The number of achenes within one capitulum decreases with plant age in both populations, but the rate of that decline is greater in the progeny of peripheral seeds. The number of peripheral achenes per capitulum in plants from both achene types decreases at a comparable rate. In contrast, the number of central achenes is reduced at a faster rate in plants germinated from peripheral achenes. After day 83, the individuals from peripheral diaspores intensified their reproductive effort; they produced more capitula but with fewer number of achenes than in individuals from central diaspores. On day 130, the number of dispores per plant of the two morphs equalized. The changes of fecundity of peripheral and central progeny with the age of the plant (at different stages of the life cycle of a single plant) contribute to an intensive seed rain throughout the fruiting period. By producing a large number of less fertile capitula with a stable number of peripheral achenes, plants derived from peripheral achenes are able to supply a higher share of peripheral achenes than if they would produce fewer but more fertile capitula. The number and developmental stages of florets were determinedin each spikelet of the spike in the main shoots of spring wheat.Samples were taken frequently from plants grown in a phytotronand in a nitrogen application field-test. Ten stages of development,from floret initiation until anthesis, were recognized and described. Inter-spikelet variation in the total number of initiated floretswas rather small. However, the number of florets at advancedstages of development, as well as the number of grains, washighest in the central spikelets in which florets initiatedfirst. Floret initiation did not proceed beyond spike emergence,whereafter the distal florets and the spikelet apex degenerated.Grain-set was restricted to florets which had developed at leastto the stage of visible anther lobes at spike emergence. The family Asteraceae has a particular inflorescence, the capitulum, consisting of ray florets and disc florets. The ray florets function as petals that attract pollinators. Marked variation in the ray floret morphology is known in a natural population of Aster hispidus var. tubulosus (Asteraceae). We analyzed the variation and found two distinct types in the ray florets, the long tubular ray floret and the ligulate ray floret. In this species, therefore, the variation in floral morphology among capitula, each of which is the basic pollination unit, is caused by the variation in the composition of the two ray floret types among capitula. We evaluated the sources of the observed variation in the floral morphology among capitula within a population using a hierarchical analysis that separated within‐individual (i.e. among capitula within each individual) and between‐individual components of the variation. We found that the main source of the variation lay at the between‐individual level, not at the between‐capitulum level nested within individuals. This finding will provide the basic knowledge that enables future study exploring whether the between‐individual variation in floral morphology caused by the compositional variation of the ray floret types leads to differential pollination success of individual plants in species of Asteraceae.  相似文献

Maize was grown at 2.47, 3.70 and 4.94 plants m-2. Ears were apparently initiated about 2 days later in the densest than in the least dense population, but rate of formation and final number of female floret primordia per row of the ear were similar in the two populations. In the densest population fewer primordia produced fully developed florets than in the least dense population and of those that were produced fewer extruded silks before pollen shedding ceased. Relative growth rates of dry mass and of length of the ear before flowering were unaffected by density, but with the apparent later start of ear growth in the densest population ears were lighter and shorter than in the least dense population. Number of florets per row of the ear at the time of flowering decreased slightly with increase in population. Number of kernels per row decreased with time after flowering, especially in the densest population. At final harvest size and mass per kernel, number of kernels per ear, length and circumference of the rachis, and space per kernel on the rachis all decreased with increase in population. Thinning the intermediate population at various times from shortly before flowering until near final harvest increased mass of grain and shoot, and number of kernels of the remaining plants at final harvest. The extent of the increases decreased progressively the later the thinning. Mass and volume per kernel were increased by thinnings done up to the time of flowering, but were unaffected by thinning from c. 16 days after flowering.  相似文献

The influence of temperature on nectar secretion in non-pollinatedflorets of Trifolium repens was investigated in growth chambersat 10, 14, 18 and 22°C. The effect of temperature on therate of nectar secretion was significant in all clones. Theoptimum temperature for secretion in three clones varied from10°C for a clone of Icelandic origin, to 18°C in a cloneselected from a Danish variety. Similarly, the average nectaryield varied significantly among clones of different geographicalorigin. One clone secreted two to four times more than othersat 10°C. The optimum day temperature for nectar secretionwas higher when the plants were exposed to low night temperature,presumably a result of decreased night respiration. Nectar accumulatedat the floret base until senescence. Evidence for reabsorptionof nectar was obtained in four clones. Sucrose, fructose andglucose were identified as the major sugars in the nectar. Highnight temperatures led to decreased sucrose percentage in favourof glucose and fructose. The frequency of new florets openingper day was not influenced by temperatures between 10 and 22°Cin one clone, whereas low temperatures significantly decreasedthe number of new florets in another. Few or no modified stomatawere observed in the epidermis of the nectary. Background and Aims: Plant aerial development is well known to be affected by daylength in terms of the timing and developmental stage of floraltransition. Arabidopsis thaliana is a ‘long day’plant in which the time to flower is delayed by short days andleaf number is increased. The aim of the work presented herewas to determine the effects of different day lengths on individualleaf area expansion. The effect of flower emergence per se onthe regulation of leaf expansion was also tested in this study. Methods: Care was taken to ensure that day length was the only sourceof micro-meteorological variation. The dynamics of individualleaf expansion were analysed in Ler and Col-0 plants grown underfive day lengths in five independent experiments. Responsesat cellular level were analysed in Ler plants grown under variousday lengths and treatments to alter the onset of flowering. Key Results: When the same leaf position was compared, the final leaf areaand both the relative and absolute rates of leaf expansion weredecreased by short days, whereas the duration of leaf expansionwas increased. Epidermal cell number and cell area were alsoaltered by day-length treatments and some of these responsescould be mimicked by manipulating the date of flowering. Conclusions: Both the dynamics and cellular bases of leaf development arealtered by differences in day length even when visible phenotypesare absent. To some extent, cell area and its response to daylength are controlled by whole plant control mechanisms associatedwith the onset of flowering.  相似文献

In perennial ryegrass seed yield is low. Pollination, fertilizationand early stages of seed development are critical periods forthe realization of the yield potential. As intact plants aredifficult to handle, we used detached spikelets to study effectsof temperature and genotype on seed set and seed development. Plants of four cultivars were grown in pots. Just prior to flowering,spikelets were detached from the ears and put on water. Afterpollination, various spikelets of each plant were placed atdifferent temperatures (14/14, 17/12 or 20/15°C). Sevendays after pollination the percentage seed set and the lengthof the developing seeds (caryopses) were assessed. Only floretsin the four basal positions were used. For each cultivar an analysis of variance for unbalanced datawas carried out. There were highly significant difference amonggenotypes for seed set and caryopsis length. There was no evidencefor genotypic variation for tolerance to low temperatures. Neithertemperature nor floret position had an effect on seed set. Plants of wheat (Triticum aestlvum L.) cv. Aotea were grownat high or low nitrogen levels and in a natural photoperiodor continuous light. Starting 17–21 days from the double-ridgestage, eight plants from each treatment were sampled every 3days until anthesis, and the two basal, the sixth, and the terminalspikelets were sectioned longitudinally. A developmental scorewas assigned to each floret and rates of development calculated.Continuous light hastened development but reduced the numberof spikelets per ear, while high nitrogen delayed developmentbut increased spikelet numbers. The number of florets initiatedin each spikelet varied within narrow limits, but grain settingdepended strongly on spikelet position and on treatment. Althoughflorets were initiated in acropetal succession, the rate ofdevelopment tended to increase up to floret 4 but then declinedmarkedly. As a result grain setting was confined to basal floretpositions, although the two basal spikelets developed so slowlythat they contributed relatively little to grain yield. Distalflorets degenerated almost simultaneously at or before ear emergence,but those in intermediate positions continued to develop untilafter fertilization in the lower florets. It is argued thatthe spikelet is an integrated system in which correlative mechanismsplay a part throughout the development of the florets.  相似文献

Long-day flowering of Pharbitis nil, dwarf strain Kidachi, at20?C was greatly influenced by the size of the culture vesseland the number of plants per vessel. The smaller the vessel,the greater the flowering response. The volume of nutrient solutionper plant was not decisive for long-day flowering. For instance,plants cultured singly in 200-ml beakers flowered, but thosecultured in 5,000-ml vessels (33?26?11.5 cm, 48 plants per vessel)did not, even though there was only about 100 ml of nutrientsolution per plant. Long-day flowering was always accompaniedby the suppression of root elongation, but not by a decreasein the dry weight of roots or shoots, or in the rate at whichthe leaf primordia appeared (plastochrone). Aeration of thenutrient solution or culture in vermiculite promoted root elongationeven in small vessels, thereby inhibiting long-day flowering.Thus the suppression of root elongation seems to be necessaryfor long-day flowering. Removal of the roots or cotyledons;however, suppressed long-day flowering even when root elongationwas inhibited by culture in small vessels. When plants werecultured at 24?C, suppression of root elongation (culture ina small vessel) did not induce long-day flowering; but, short-daytreatment induced flowering without suppressing root elongation. Female Larinus latus lay eggs into the capitula of their Onopordum spp. host plants from the onset of capitulum development until the completion of flowering. This tight linkage between insect life-history and plant development optimised larval survival, apart from some initial asynchrony between the readiness of the females to oviposit and the suitability of the very small capitula to physically support eggs. Eggs were laid on bracts and stems of capitula or directly in the florets, when these became available. Both the location of the egg and time of oviposition influenced mortality factors such as egg and larval parasitism, egg desiccation and larval establishment. Overall, survival of eggs laid later in the season into florets was higher, although the adults that emerged were smaller. The change in choice of oviposition site that occurs at the onset of flowering, not only favours survival, but ensures more efficient resource use by the larvae. This occurs because sequential flowering of Onopordum spp. drives a sequential oviposition pattern and spreads the egg load more evenly over the available capitula, reversing a trend earlier in the season to clump eggs that were laid directly on the bracts. Other potential constraints, such as capitulum size, absolute egg density and previous egg-laying do not play a major role in determining the oviposition pattern of L. latus. Larval survival was positively correlated with capitulum size and not strongly influenced by egg density. Competition for resources only appeared to play a role in smaller capitula, and manifested itself in a reduction in the size of emerging adults rather than the death of immatures. In the absence of strong interspecific competition, the oviposition behavior of L. latus has become geared to maximising resource use for larvae (i.e. its own potential competitiveness) rather than minimising interactions with other members of the capitulum endophage guild.  相似文献
