This paper provides an empirical account of commercial genetic predisposition testing in mainland China, based on interviews
with company mangers, regulators and clients, and literature research during fieldwork in mainland China from July to September
2006. This research demonstrates that the commercialization of genetic testing and the lack of adequate regulation have created
an environment in which dubious advertising practices and misleading and unprofessional medical advice are commonplace. The
consequences of these ethically problematic activities for the users of predictive tests are, as yet, unknown. The paper concludes
with a bioethical and social science perspective on the social and ethical issues raised by the dissemination and utilization

In Sri Lanka, termination of pregnancy, other than in extreme circumstances, is strictly illegal. Among the public and large
sections of the medical community there is widespread support for some degree of liberalization of the law, particularly where
this relates to serious genetic conditions which can be identified prenatally. Tension emerges out of a publicly maintained
conservatism on issues of abortion on the one hand and a growing disconnection from unregulated practices of termination in
the private sector on the other. Social science approaches have much to contribute when understanding the ‘therapeutic gap’
that opens up and, in particular, the way that local ideas of fate, destiny and how suffering might be ameliorated become

Nine types of live foods viz. L, S and SS morphotypes of Brachionus plicatilis sp. complex, first instar Artemia franciscana, Fabrea salina, Acartia tsuensis, Tigriopus japonicus, Diaphanosoma celebensis, Moina mongolica and a formulated feed of two sizes (400 and 700 μm) were used to observe feeding behaviour and growth of mangrove killifish,
Kryptolebias marmoratus. Behavioural observations were made for one hour on days 0, 1, 5, and 10 after hatching. Focus, unsuccessful and successful
attacks and vomit were noted. With rotifers L, S and SS types and newly hatched Artemia nauplii as food, all the larvae showed maximum feeding success throughout the experimental period. Larvae did not consume
any of the 700 μm artificial diet. Vomiting was noticed on capturing the ciliate Fabrea and 400 μm artificial diets. Rotifers were ingested in greater numbers. SS-type rotifers were consumed in largest number
(209.2/h per individual) on day 10. Significantly greater growth was observed after 10 days rearing with L type rotifer, Artemia nauplii, T. japonicus, A. tsuensis, M. mongolica, D. celebensis, and a mixture of L type rotifer and F. salina (Tukey–Kramer post hoc test, P < 0.05). Feed selectivity experiments on days 0, 1, 5 and 10 revealed that killifish larvae feed preferentially on Artemia nauplii and rotifers from a mixture of Artemia nauplii, rotifers, A. tsuensis, T. japonicus, D. celebensis and M. mongolica. There is accumulating evidence that membrane-bound receptors interact with many intracellular proteins. Multiprotein complexes
associated with ionotropic receptors have been extensively characterized, but the identification of proteins interacting with
G protein-coupled receptors (GPCRs) has so far only been achieved in a piecemeal fashion, focusing on one or two protein species.
We describe a method based on peptide affinity chromatography, two-dimensional electrophoresis, mass spectrometry and immunoblotting
to identify the components of multiprotein complexes interacting directly or indirectly with intracellular domains of GPCRs
or, more generally, any other membrane-bound receptor. Using this global approach, we have characterized multiprotein complexes
that bind to the carboxy-terminal tail of the 5-hydroxytryptamine type 2C receptor and are important for its subcellular localization
in CNS cells (Bécamel et al., EMBO J., 21(10): 2332, 2002).

Melting behaviour of D-sucrose, D-glucose and D-fructose 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
The melting behaviour of d-sucrose, d-glucose and d-fructose was studied. The melting peaks were determined with DSC and the start of decomposition was studied with TG at different rates of heating. In addition, melting points were determined with a melting point apparatus. The samples were identified as d-sucrose, alpha-d-glucopyranose and beta-d-fructopyranose by powder diffraction measurements. There were differences in melting between the different samples of the same sugar and the rate of heating had a remarkable effect on the melting behaviour. For example, T(o), DeltaH(f) and T(i) (initial temperature of decomposition) at a 1 degrees Cmin(-1) rate of heating were 184.5 degrees C, 126.6Jg(-1) and 171.3 degrees C for d-sucrose, 146.5 degrees C, 185.4Jg(-1) and 152.0 degrees C for d-glucose and 112.7 degrees C, 154.1Jg(-1) and 113.9 degrees C for d-fructose. The same parameters at 10 degrees Cmin(-1) rate of heating were 188.9 degrees C, 134.4Jg(-1) and 189.2 degrees C for d-sucrose, 155.2 degrees C, 194.3Jg(-1) and 170.3 degrees C for d-glucose and 125.7 degrees C, 176.7Jg(-1) and 136.8 degrees C d-fructose. At slow rates of heating, there were substantial differences between the different samples of the same sugar. The melting point determination is a sensitive method for the characterization of crystal quality but it cannot be used alone for the identification of sugar samples in all cases. Therefore, the melting point method should be validated for different sugars. 相似文献

An improved method for constructing and selectively silanizing double-barreled,neutral liquid-carrier,ion-selective microelectrodes 总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
We describe an improved, efficient and reliable method for the vapour-phase silanization of multi-barreled, ion-selective
microelectrodes of which the silanized barrel(s) are to be filled with neutral liquid ion-exchanger (LIX). The technique employs
a metal manifold to exclusively and simultaneously deliver dimethyldichlorosilane to only the ion-selective barrels of several
multi-barreled microelectrodes. Compared to previously published methods the technique requires fewer procedural steps, less
handling of individual microelectrodes, improved reproducibility of silanization of the selected microelectrode barrels and
employs standard borosilicate tubing rather than the less-conventional theta-type glass. The electrodes remain stable for
up to 3 weeks after the silanization procedure. The efficacy of a double-barreled electrode containing a proton ionophore
in the ion-selective barrel is demonstrated in situ in the leaf apoplasm of pea (Pisum) and sunflower (Helianthus). Individual leaves were penetrated to depth of ∼150 μm through the abaxial surface. Microelectrode readings remained stable
after multiple impalements without the need for a stabilizing PVC matrix. 相似文献

INAA has been used for the determination of Na, Mg, Al, Cl, K, Sc, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Cu, Zn, As, Se, Br, Rb, Sr, Mo, and W in
grains of rice, wheat, and barley, which were collected from different plant fields in Iraq. Samples and standards were irradiated
in the IRT-5000 reactor, at neutron fluxes of 2 × 1013 cm−2·s−1 and 3.2 × 1011 cm−2·s−1. Interferences of photopeaks with each other were considered, and reaction interferences were calculated and determined experimentally.
Accuracy of our method was assessed by the analysis of IAEA standards Wheat Flour and Bovine liver. A good agreement has been
achieved between the present results and recommended values. The precision and detection limit were determined for all elements

Blood pressure (BP) response to biofeedback-assisted relaxation is not uniform among hypertensive individuals. The purpose of this exploratory study was to determine if selected psychophysiological variables could be used to identify individuals able to lower blood pressure using biofeedback-assisted relaxation. Responders were defined using a preset criterion of 5 mm Hg or greater decrease in mean arterial pressure. A logistic regression model derived from five variables (heart rate, finger temperature, forehead muscle tension, plasma renin response to furosemide, and mean arterial pressure response to furosemide) provided significant predictive power for BP response, exhibiting a sensitivity of 84.6% and a specificity of 80.0%. With future validation, the proposed model may provide useful information to identify patients likely to benefit from biofeedback-assisted relaxation. 相似文献

In the present study, the chemical composition of the essential oils from aerial parts of Centaurea grinensis Reuter (K) collected at ?uta Lova, near Senj (Croatia), and aerial parts (L1) and flowers (L2) of C. apiculata Ledeb. collected near Rebro village, near Breznik town, Znepole Region (Bulgaria), both belonging to subgenus Lopholoma (Cass.) Dobrocz, was evaluated by GC and GC-MS. The main components of K were 4-vinyl guaiacol (21.5%), hexadecanoic acid (16.2%), acetophenone (12.5%). Caryophyllene oxide (15.8%) together with sphathulenol (14.5%) and humulene epoxide II (9.4%) were recognized as the main constituent of both the aerial part (L1) and flowers (L2) of C. apiculata. Furthermore, a complete review on the composition of the essential oils of all the Centaurea taxa belonging to subgenus Lopholoma studied so far has been inserted and cluster analysis (PCA) was carried out. 相似文献

The purpose of the present study was to develop and design pectin and polyvinyl pyrrolidone (PVP) blended hydrogel membranes
(PEVP), with different pectin: PVP ratios (1:0.2, 1:0.4, 1:0.6, 1:0.8 and 1:1 w/w), which were prepared by using a conventional solution casting technique. An attempt has been made to characterize the hydrogel
membranes by various instrumental techniques like, FTIR (Fourier transform infrared) spectroscopy, X-ray diffraction (XRD),
Differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), tensile strength test and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). The release patterns
of the drug (salicylic acid) from the hydrogel membrane were done in three different release mediums (pH 1.4, pH 7.4 and distilled
water) and samples were analyzed spectrophotometrically at 294 nm wavelength on a UV Vis spectrophotometer. MTT assay was
done to ensure cytocompatibility of the pectin/PVP hydrogel membranes using B16 melanoma cells. FTIR spectroscopy indicated
the presence of secondary amide (I) absorption bands. The XRD study shows decrease in crystallinity of the hydrogel membranes
with increase in PVP ratio. DSC study shows an increase in T
g of pectin after blending with PVP. It was found that tensile strength increases with increasing PVP ratios in the hydrogel
membranes. The prepared hydrogel membranes were found to be biocompatible with B16 melanoma cells. 相似文献

The transport of l-leucine, l-phenylalanine and l-alanine by the perfused lactating rat mammary gland has been examined using a rapid, paired-tracer dilution technique. The clearances of all three amino acids by the mammary gland consisted of a rising phase followed by a rapid fall-off, respectively, reflecting influx and efflux of the radiotracers. The peak clearance of l-leucine was inhibited by BCH (65%) and d-leucine (58%) but not by l-proline. The inhibition of l-leucine clearance by BCH and d-leucine was not additive. l-leucine inhibited the peak clearance of radiolabelled l-leucine by 78%. BCH also inhibited the peak clearance of l-phenylalanine (66%) and l-alanine (33%) by the perfused mammary gland. Lactating rat mammary tissue was found to express both LAT1 and LAT2 mRNA. The results suggest that system L is situated in the basolateral aspect of the lactating rat mammary epithelium and thus probably plays a central role in neutral amino acid uptake from blood. The finding that l-alanine uptake by the gland was inhibited by BCH suggests that LAT2 may make a significant contribution to neutral amino acid uptake by the mammary epithelium. 相似文献

A rapid cyclic instrumental neutron activation analysis (CINAA) method has been used to determine the selenium content of
27 duplicate diet samples from each of the 27 districts surrounding Pinhel, Portugal. The accuracy and precision of the CINAA
method have been evaluated by analyzing certified reference materials and observed to be within ±5–10% for samples containing
at least 40 ppb of selenium. The detection limit has been found to vary between 26–42 ppb selenium depending on the sample
composition. The average daily dietary intake has been calculated as 37 μg of selenium per day. 相似文献

Data on serum lipids and heart rate reactivity to a standardized mental arithmetic stressor were collected on 54 healthy men and 73 healthy women. Subjects' ages ranged from 18 to 61 years, allowing analysis of data from both young and older subgroups. MANOVA revealed that age was directly associated with elevated lipids in men and women. There was no significant relationship between reactivity and lipids for either older or young men. Conversely, young women showed a significant direct relationship between reactivity and Total Cholesterol and LDL, but this was not present for older women. Implications of these data for the previously reported hypothetical relationship between reactivity and lipids are discussed. N than flag leaf (23 %) under EC. Moreover, CO2 enrichment shortened the photosynthetic duration of flag leaf relative to ear. In this way the ratio of ear to flag leaf

Four models of network structure are combined with models of bioenergetic dynamics to study the role of food web topology
and nonlinear dynamics on species coexistence in complex ecological networks. Network models range from the highly structured
niche model to loosely constrained energetically feasible random networks. Bioenergetic models differ in how they represent
primary production, functional responses, and consumption by generalists. Network structure weakly influenced the ability
of species to coexist. Species persistence is strongly affected by functional responses and generalists’ consumption rates
but weakly affected by models and amounts of primary production. Despite these generalities, specific mechanisms that determine
persistence under one dynamical regime, such as top-down control by consumers, may play an insignificant role under different
dynamical conditions. Future research is needed to strengthen the weak empirical basis for various functional forms and parameter
values that strongly influence whether species can coexist in complex food webs.
