Assessment of the risk of perforation of the mandibular canal by implant drill using density and thickness parameters Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate whether the resistance of the bone surrounding the mandibular canal had sufficient density and thickness to avoid perforation by drills when preparing the bed of the implant. Background: Damage to the inferior alveolar nerve (IAN) is more common than expected. This injury may lead to serious complications ranging from mild paresthesia to total anaesthesia of the lower jaw. Materials and methods: The CT images of 99 patients, whose ages ranged between 20 and 79 years, and who applied for an implant application to the posterior aspect of the mandible were included in this study. Results: The overall average bone thickness in the premolar and molar regions was 0.8717 ± 0.1818 and 0.8556 ± 0.1756 mm, respectively, whereas the bone density in the premolar and molar regions was 649.18 ± 241.42 and 584.44 ± 222.73 Hounsfield Units (HU), respectively (p < 0.001). Conclusion: It was determined that the average density and thickness of the bone that surrounds the mandibular canal was not sufficient to resist the implant drill. It can be concluded that the risk of injury to the IAN may be minimised by accurately determining the bone mass on the canal prior to the implant procedure, and avoiding excessive force when approaching the canal.  相似文献

Background To determine systolic and diastolic function using transthoracic echocardiography in the baboon (Papio hamadryas). Methods Transthoracic echocardiography was performed in eight non‐pregnant female and six pregnant baboons according to American Society of Echocardiography recommendations. Results Haemodynamic measurements were obtained from fourteen baboons. Compared to non‐pregnant baboons, pregnant baboons demonstrated: (mean ± SD, pregnant vs. healthy) increased cardiac output (1615 ± 121 ml/minutes vs. 1317 ± 134 ml/minutes P = 0.001) due to an increased heart rate [120 ± 11 beats per minute (BPM) vs. 105 ± 6 BPM P = 0.018]. The inter‐observer and intra‐observer variability (mean difference ± SD) for the left ventricular outflow tract diameter was 0.05 ± 0.07 cm and 0.01 ± 0.03 cm respectively. There was minimal impact to the animal’s daily activities. Conclusions Transthoracic echocardiography was applicable and reproducible for the assessment of haemodynamics in baboons thus enabling translation of animal results to human studies.  相似文献

Skeletal growth is explored between Early Neolithic (EN) (8000 to 6800 BP) and Late Neolithic (LN) (6000 to 5200 BP) foragers from the Cis‐Baikal region of Eastern Siberia. Previous studies suggest that increased systemic stress and smaller adult body size characterize the EN compared to LN. On this basis, greater evidence for stunting and wasting is expected in the EN compared to LN. Skeletal growth parameters assessed here include femoral and tibial lengths, estimated stature and body mass, femoral midshaft cortical thickness, total bone thickness, and medullary width. Forward selection was used to fit polynomial lines to each skeletal growth parameter relative to dental age in the pooled samples, and standardized residuals were compared between groups using t tests. Standardized residuals of body mass and femoral length were significantly lower in the EN compared to LN sample, particularly from late infancy through early adolescence. However, no significant differences in the standardized residuals for cortical thickness, medullary width, total bone thickness, tibial length, or stature were found between the groups. Age ranges for stunting in femoral length and wasting in body mass are consistent with environmental perturbations experienced at the cessation of breast feeding and general resource insecurity in the EN compared to LN sample. Differences in relative femoral but not tibial length may be associated with age‐specific variation in growth‐acceleration for the distal and proximal limb segments. Similarity in cortical bone growth between the two samples may reflect the combined influences of systemic and mechanical factors on this parameter. Bone quality, a contributor to bone strength, is determined by structural and mechanical properties, which may be analyzed by gross and/or microscopic methods. Variables that contribute to bone quality, such as porosity, can provide insight into the health and lifestyles of people in prehistory. This study tests the ability of microcomputed tomography (µCT) to capture and characterize cortical canal systems in archaeological bone. Seven variables and 71 femora are analyzed to explore bone dynamics in prehistoric foragers from Lake Baikal, Siberia. The results indicate that canal number and canal separation differ significantly (P < 0.05) between age‐at‐death categories, but only for the pooled and male samples. When merged into a new variable by means of principal components analysis, canal diameter and canal surface to canal volume are also able to discriminate amongst age‐at‐death categories, as well as between the sexes. However, the overall lack of significant differences between the sexes and amongst age‐at‐death categories indicates that Baikal forager bone quality (i.e., canal architecture) did not change drastically throughout the lifespan. Interestingly, principal component one identified an untested variable that contributes to canal microstructure variability, and a sexual division of labor may promote divergent trends in canal degree of anisotropy between the sexes. Overall, µCT provides an alternate method for exploring bone quality in archaeological remains, complementing existing methods such as thin‐sectioning and gross morphological analyses. The effect of age and gender on major, minor, and trace element contents in the intact rib bone of 80 relatively healthy 15–55-year-old women and men was investigated. Contents or upper limit of contents of 16 chemical elements in the rib bone were determined by inductively coupled plasma atomic emission spectrometry (ICP-AES). Mean values (M?±?SΕΜ) for the mass fraction of Ba, Ca, Cu, Fe, K, Li, Mg, Na, P, S, Sr, and Zn (milligram per kilogram of dry bone) were as follows: 2.54?±?0.16, 171,400?±?4,050, 1.35?±?0.22, 140?±?11, 1,874?±?71, 0.049?±?0.011, 2,139?±?38, 5,378?±?88, 75,140?±?1,660, 1,881?±?51, 291?±?20, and 92.8?±?1.5, respectively. The upper limits of contents of Al, B, Mn, and V were <7.20, <0.65, <0.36, and <0.03, respectively. Statistically significant tendency for the Ca, Mg, and P content to decrease with age was found in the human rib bone, regardless of gender. The mass fraction of Fe in the male rib bone increases with age. It was shown that higher Ca, Mg, Na, P, and Sr mass fractions as well as lower Fe content were typical of female ribs as compared to those in male ribs.  相似文献

Sixteen female piglets (58 d of age, 16.8 ± 0.8 kg body weight [BW]) were assigned to two groups (n = 8) and received until day 100 of age (50.3 ± 1.2 kg BW) ad libitum either a diet with a standard (diet C) or low (diet L) total phosphorus (P) content (5.38 and 4.23 g/kg, respectively). Diet C was supplemented with mineral P (1.15 g/kg) and did not contain microbial phytase. Diet L did not contain any inorganic P but 750 FTU/kg of microbial phytase. Despite these treatments, both diets were composed with the same ingredients. Body mineralisation of each gilt was assessed by determining the bone mineral content (BMC), area bone mineral density (BMD) by the dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) at days 58, 72, 86 and 100 of age. Feeding diet L caused a higher P digestibility (p = 0.008) measured from days 72 to 86 of age and at 100 days of age a higher BMC and BMD (p ≤ 0.01). Furthermore, the gilts of group L deposited more minerals in the body than control pigs (by 2.4 g/d, p = 0.008). It was found that BMD and BMC were positively correlated with body lean mass and digestible P intake. The results indicated that, even for very young pigs, the addition of microbial phytase instead of inorganic P increases the amount of digestible P covering the requirements of piglets for proper bone mineralisation. Furthermore, it was proved that the DXA method can be successfully applied to measure body fat and lean mass contents as well as bone mineralisation of growing pigs using the same animals.  相似文献

The aim of this study was to estimate the heritability and describe the correlates of bone marrow lesions in knee subchondral bone. A sibpair design was used. T2- and T1-weighted MRI scans were performed on the right knee to assess bone marrow lesions at lateral tibia and femora and medial tibia and femora, as well as chondral defects. A radiograph was taken on the same knee and scored for individual features of osteoarthritis (radiographic osteoarthritis; ROA) and alignment. Other variables measured included height, weight, knee pain, and lower-limb muscle strength. Heritability was estimated with the program SOLAR (Sequential Oligogenetic Linkage Analysis Routines). A total of 115 siblings (60 females and 55 males) from 48 families, representing 95 sib pairs, took part. The adjusted heritability estimates were 53 ± 28% (mean ± SEM; p = 0.03) and 65 ± 32% (p = 0.03) for severity of bone marrow lesions at lateral and medial compartments, respectively. The estimates were reduced by 8 to 9% after adjustment for chondral defects and ROA (but not alignment). The adjusted heritability estimate was 99% for prevalent bone marrow lesions at both lateral and medial compartments. Both lateral and medial bone marrow lesions were significantly correlated with age, chondral defects, and ROA of the knee (all p < 0.05). Medial bone marrow lesions were also more common in males and were correlated with body mass index (BMI). Thus, bone marrow lesions have a significant genetic component. They commonly coexist with chondral defects and ROA but only share common genetic mechanisms to a limited degree. They are also more common with increasing age, male sex, and increasing BMI.  相似文献

Spermatozoa morphology and fine structure were studied in the grey mullet, Mugil cephalus using light, scanning and transmission electron microscopy. Light microscopy observations indicate a semi‐cystic type of spermatogenesis in the testis. The electron microscopy micrograph showed that the spermatozoon of M. cephalus is uniflagellated (total length 5.78 ± 1.26 μm), differentiated into an ovoid‐shaped head without acrosome (1.80 ± 0.35 μm in length and 1.91 ± 0.30 μm in diameter), with a short midpiece and a long cylindrical flagellar tail (length 3.60 ± 0.50 μm). The midpiece is characterized by the presence of four to five vacuoles, a cytoplasmic canal, two centriole and two spherical mitochondria having a flat type of cristae. Chromatin granules of the nucleus form an electron‐dense homogeneous mass. The flagellum consists of nine peripheral microtubules and a central pair (9 + 2) surrounded by the plasma membrane with side fins. The results confirm that spermatozoa of M. cephalus are perciform or teleostean type II. Information generated from the present study will be useful in taxonomic classification, cryopreservation and breeding work.  相似文献

Changes with age in bone cortex of the rat were investigated by establishing histological parameters which could be quantitated to estimate age at death. Decalcified cross sections of mandible, femur and tibia were prepared from rats two to 120 days old, and measurements were made of: (1) number of osteons, (2) average number of lamellae per osteon, (3) average Haversian canal diameter, and (4) number of non-Haversian (primary) canals. Multiple regression techniques were used to estimate age at death from several combinations of these variables. With age, the number of osteons per unit area of bone and the number of lamellae per osteon increased, but Haversian canal diameter and the number of primary canals decreased. Multiple regression analyses indicated that age at death could be estimated to ± 3 days of the true value in 95% of the cases. Nomographs based on histological measurements of each bone were prepared which can provide accurate estimates of age between two and 120 days in the Sprague-Dawley female rat. It was concluded that microstructure of bone cortex can not only be quantitated to provide accurate estimates of age but it may also constitute a sensitive measure of the metabolic state of the organism. The techniques utilized should prove useful in anthropology as well in studies of bone aging.  相似文献

Abstract

The two typical Mediterranean pines of Greece (Pinus halepensis Mill. and P. brutia Ten.) show a distinct, natural geographical distribution. However, in sites where they grow in sympatry (mainly due to extended reforestations), their morphological discrimination is not always easy. In the present study, three new morphometric indicators are introduced (at decreasing rank of reliability): (a) seed coat mass fraction, expressed as a percentage of the total seed mass (SM) (overall mean values 27.9 ± 0.5 (n = 160), and 58.0 ± 0.3 (n = 320) from 18 and 16 populations of Aleppo and East Mediterranean pine, respectively), (b) mean SM (16.70 ± 0.26 mg, n = 651, and 42.79 ± 0.61 mg, n = 425 from 18 and 16 populations of each of the two species, respectively) and (c) cone length/width ratio (2.20 ± 0.01, n = 651, and 1.77 ± 0.01, n = 606 from the same 18 and 16 populations, respectively). These three parameters are easily calculated, and constitute a reliable tool for the discrimination of the two pine species on the basis of their reproductive units (cones and seeds), provided that a minimal number of randomly collected samples is used for each indicator: 20 seeds for the measurement of seed coat mass fraction, about 1000 seeds for the estimation of mean SM, and 20 cones for the calculation of the cone length/width ratio. The functional implications of these adaptive traits are discussed.  相似文献

The population structure analysis by means of the osteometric dimensions of metacarpal bones in the population groups of the northern Adriatic island of Krk, Croatia was performed. The sample consisted of randomly sampled adult islanders (94 males and 79 females) aged from 18 to 85 years from six villages of the island of Krk. "Biological distances" were estimated by the Mahalanobis D2 analysis for bone length (L), total diaphysis width (T) and medullary canal width (M) dimensions of the second left metacarpal bone. Analysis of the osteometric dimensions of metacarpal bones as a measure of biological distance between population groups of the island of Krk indicated bio-cultural and socio-cultural events, rather than geographical distances, to be the primary determinants of anthropogenetic structure of today's population groups of the island.  相似文献

Pulsatile luteinizing-hormone releasing hormone (LHRH) secretion was measured from the mediobasal-suprachiasmatic-preoptic (MBH-SCN-POA) region of the hypothalamus from fetal baboons (Papio anubis) at midgestation (day 100; term = day 184). The entire MBH-SCN-POA (48 ± 5 mg) was obtained between 1100 and 1200 hours and was immediately placed in icecold phosphate buffer (pH 7.4). The MBH-SCN-POA units were halved at the midline and superfused in parallel at 37.5°C for 5 hours. Then 500 μl of superfusate was collected at 10-minute intervals, and LHRH concentration was measured by radioimmunoassay using the Chen-Ramirez antibody. In fetuses of untreated baboons (N = 3), LHRH pulse amplitude (mean ± SE) was 16.0 ± 4.2 pg, with a period of 30 ± 1 minute; the average 10-minute output of LHRH was 9.4 ± 2.0 pg. In fetal baboons in which the hormonal milieu in the mother was modulated by androstenedione treatment of midpregnancy (N = 3), average LHRH pulse amplitude was 1.7 ± 0.3 pg, with a period of 33.5 ± 4.9 minutes; the average 10-minute output of LHRH was 1.2 ± 0.2 pg. Collectively, these data suggest that as early as midgestation, fetal baboons secrete LHRH in vitro in a pulsatile fashion and with a periodicity of 30–35 minutes. In addition, the decrease in LHRH pulse amplitude and the average 10-minute LHRH output (P < .01, P < .05) in tissue from fetal baboons of mothers in which the normal pattern of steroidogenesis is altered suggest that the output of LHRH systems in the fetus is sensitive to changes in the maternal hormonal milieu.  相似文献

Objective: Cholecystokinin (CCK) is known to inhibit food intake and is an important signal for controlling meal volume, indicating a possible role in weight regulation. Our objective was to investigate genetic influences on plasma CCK in baboons. Research Methods and Procedures: Subjects were 376 baboons (males = 113, females = 263) from the Southwest National Primate Research Center, housed at the Southwest Foundation for Biomedical Research, San Antonio, Texas. Anthropometric and biochemical parameters were analyzed. Genetic effects on plasma CCK were estimated by the maximum likelihood‐based variance components method implemented in the software program SOLAR (Sequential Oligogenic Linkage Analysis Routines). Results: Male baboons (32.7 ± 6 kg) were much heavier than females (20.2 ± 4 kg). Similarly, mean (± standard deviation) plasma CCK values were also higher in male baboons (13.8 ± 6 pM) than female baboons (12.5 ± 4 pM). Significant heritabilities were observed for plasma CCK (0.14 ± 0.1, p < 0.05), body weight (h2 = 0.62 ± 0.15, p < 10?8), and glucose (h2 = 0.68 ± 0.17, p < 10?7). A genome‐wide scan of plasma CCK detected a strong signal for a quantitative trait locus (QTL) on chromosome 17p12–13 [logarithm of the odds (LOD) = 3.1] near marker D17S804. Suggestive evidence of a second QTL was observed on chromosome 4q34–35 (LOD = 2.3) near marker D4S2374. Discussion: A substantial contribution of additive genetic effects to the variation in plasma levels of CCK was demonstrated in baboons. The identification of a QTL for plasma CCK on chromosome 17p is significant, as several obesity‐related traits such as BMI, leptin, adiponectin, and acylation stimulating protein have already been mapped to this region.  相似文献

This study, the first on fish reproduction in the Pendjari River, investigated aspects of the reproductive biology of Schilbe intermedius. A total of 429 females and 239 males were collected from March 2007 to February 2008. Females were larger than males and the sex ratio was 1:1.8 in favour of females. Size at first maturity was estimated to be 14.9 cm and 16.1 cm for males and females, respectively. Absolute fecundity ranged from 1 006 to 83 980 (22 421 ± 16 083) oocytes, and mean relative fecundity was 201 ± 162 oocytes g?1 of total body mass. Frequency distributions of oocyte diameter suggested synchronous development, with total spawning. Spawning lasted from June to November, coinciding with peaks in rainfall and flooding. Larger females began spawning about two months before smaller ones.  相似文献

Bone mass, as assessed by measurements of total subperiosteal diameter and medullary width of the second metacarpal bone on hand-wrist radiographs, was evaluated for 31 Guamanian patients (15 males, 16 females) with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS), 67 patients (39 males, 28 females) with parkinsonism-dementia (PD), and 66 (34 males, 32 females) nonaffected Guamanian controls. Comparisons between the two disease groups and between each disease group and the nonaffected controls were made taking into account the sex, age, and disability status of each participant. At all ages, ALS patients of both sexes had significantly lower percent cortical areas (PCA) than did nonaffected controls. The ALS males also had significantly lower PCA than PD males, although no significant differences were observed between female ALS and PD patients. The PD patients of either sex had a lower PCA when compared to controls, but the differences were not statistically significant. The observed differences in PCA were due solely to increased medullary width, suggesting that the diminished cortical bone thickness resulted from greater bone resorption rather than differential bone growth. Longitudinal studies support the cross-sectional findings of accelerated bone loss among ALS patients. It is not possible to determine from the present data whether the observed differences in PCA of the second metacarpal of the ALS patients are due to atrophy of the first interosseous muscle, to a generalized resorption process inherently associated with the development and progression of ALS, or to factors not accounted for by the present analysis.  相似文献

Calcium and phosphorus concentrations as well as the Ca/P ratio were estimated in intact rib bone samples from healthy humans, 37 women and 45 men, aged 15–55 yr. For Ca and P concentration measurements, instrumental neutron activation analysis was used. The mean values (mean±SD) for the investigated parameters were 19.3±4.5% of dry bone weight, 8.42±2.14% of dry bone weight, and a ratio of 2.33±0.34, respectively. Statistically significant differences for the above parameters were not observed to be related either to age or sex. The mean values for Ca, P, and the Ca/P ratio were within a very wide range of published data and close to their medians. The individual variation for the Ca/P ratio in rib bone from healthy humans was lower than those for Ca and P taken separately. An indication is that the specificity of the Ca/P ratio improves upon that for Ca and P concentrations and may be more reliable in the diagnosis of bone disorders.  相似文献

Freshwater crabs of the family Trichodactylidae are widely distributed in major river basins of the South American continent. The population structure of one species, Dilocarcinus pagei, was analyzed in an artificial reservoir in Southeastern Brazil, recording data on the sex ratio, recruitment, and mortality. A total of 1339 crabs were collected and included 804 males and 535 females (3 ovigerous and 4 with hatchlings); the sex ratio was 1:0.61 (males: females). Two modes of male and female carapace width (CW) were recorded, with means of 14.4 mm (n = 407) and 38.9 mm (n = 394) for males and 17.9 mm CW (n = 269) and 39.2 mm (n = 267) for females. The mean size of males (CW = 26.6 ± 13.8 mm) was significantly larger than that of females (CW = 28.5 ± 12.8 mm). The data indicated that recruitment occurs in summer (January–March), with the reproductive period in spring (October–December), periods with the highest rainfall and temperature values in the region. Reproduction leads to the death of the parents, influencing the sex ratio, which oscillates mainly during the reproductive period.  相似文献

Objective: To assess changes in body composition with weight loss in obese subjects randomized to a laparoscopic adjustable gastric band surgical program or a medical program using a very‐low‐energy diet and orlistat. Research Methods and Procedures: Using body composition measurements by DXA, neutron activation for total body nitrogen, and whole body γ counting for total body potassium, we studied changes in fat mass, fat distribution, fat‐free mass, total bone mineral content, total body protein, and body cell mass at 6 (n = 61 paired) and 24 months (n = 53 paired) after randomization. Results: At 24 months, the surgical group had lost significantly more weight (surgical, 20.3 ± 6.5 kg; medical, 5.9 ± 8.0 kg). There was favorable fat‐free mass to fat mass loss ratios for both groups (surgical, 1:5.5; medical, 1:5.9). Changes in total body nitrogen or potassium were favorable in each group. A small reduction in mean bone mineral content occurred throughout the study but was not associated with extent of weight loss or treatment group. At 6 months, weight loss for both groups was similar (surgical, 14.1 ± 4.5 kg; medical, 13.3 ± 7.3 kg). The medical program subjects lost less fat‐free mass and skeletal muscle and had increased total body protein. The proportion of body fat to limb fat remained remarkably constant throughout the study. Discussion: Weight loss programs used in this study induced fat loss without significant deleterious effects on the components of fat‐free mass.  相似文献

The key signaling networks regulating bone marrow mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) are poorly defined. Lgr4, which belongs to the leucine-rich repeat-containing G protein-coupled receptor (LGR) family, is widely expressed in multiple tissues from early embryogenesis to adulthood. We investigated whether Lgr4 functions in BMSCs and in osteogenesis, adipogenesis, and skeletal myoblasts, using mice with a β-geo gene trap inserted into the Lgr4 gene. Abundant Lgr4 expression was detected in skeletal, adipose and muscular tissue of Lgr4+/– mice at E16.5 by β-gal staining, and Lgr4-deficiency promoted BMSC proliferation (16 ± 4 in wild-type [WT] and 28 ± 2 in Lgr4−/−) using colony forming units-fibroblast assay, while suppressing BMSC migration (from 103 ± 18 in WT to 57 ± 10 in Lgr4−/−) by transwell migration assay and apoptosis ratio (from 0.0720 ± 0.0123 to 0.0189 ± 0.0051) by annexin V staining assay. Deletion of Lgr4 decreased bone mass (BV/TV from 19.16 ± 2.14 in WT mice to 10.36 ± 1.96 in KO) and fat mass through inhibiting BMSC differentiation to osteoblasts or adipocytes. Furthermore, LGR4-regulated osteogenic, adipogenic, and myogenic gene expression. Importantly, our data showed that loss of Lgr4-inhibited fracture healing by suppressing osteoblast differentiation. Moreover, deletion of Lgr4 in BMSCs-delayed fracture healing following stem cell therapy by BMSC transplantation. Together, our results demonstrated that LGR4 is essential for mesoderm-derived tissue development and BMSC differentiation, demonstrating that LGR4 could be a promising drug target for related diseases and a critical protein for stem cell therapy.  相似文献

We report body mass and testicular size in 258 anubis (Papio anubis or P. hamadryas anubis) and 59 hamadryas (P. hamadryas or P. h. hamadryas) baboons, live-trapped in Ethiopia. As predicted by theories of sexual selection by sperm competition, among hamadryas baboons, which are monandrous, fully adult males have absolutely and relatively smaller testes than those of comparable males among anubis baboons, which are polyandrous. Male hamadryas are also ca. 10% smaller in bodily mass as adults. The intertaxonal difference in adults is due entirely to the fact that in male anubis baboons, testicular and bodily mass continue to grow up to full adulthood–the age at which most males emigrate from their natal troop and initiate a confrontational breeding strategy among unrelated animals. By contrast, male hamadryas baboons, which are usually philopatric, attain adult body mass and testicular size as subadults. In both species, juveniles experience rapid testicular growth peaking in rate at ca. 12kg body mass, but testicular descent and growth starts earlier in hamadryas than in anubis baboons. Juvenile hamadryas baboons have relatively larger testes than their anubis equivalents, perhaps because male philopatry allows the mating strategy of male hamadryas baboons to be initiated during juvenile life and therefore permits some sperm competition between juveniles and adults.  相似文献
