Evolutionary theory predicts that mothers of different condition should adjust the birth sex ratio of their offspring in relation to future reproductive benefits. Published studies addressing variation in mammalian sex ratios have produced surprisingly contradictory results. Explaining the source of such variation has been a challenge for sex-ratio theory, not least because no mechanism for sex-ratio adjustment is known. I conducted a meta-analysis of previous mammalian sex-ratio studies to determine if there are any overall patterns in sex-ratio variation. The contradictory nature of previous results was confirmed. However, studies that investigated indices of condition around conception show almost unanimous support for the prediction that mothers in good condition bias their litters towards sons. Recent research on the role of glucose in reproductive functioning have shown that excess glucose favours the development of male blastocysts, providing a potential mechanism for sex-ratio variation in relation to maternal condition around conception. Furthermore, many of the conflicting results from studies on sex-ratio adjustment would be explained if glucose levels in utero during early cell division contributed to the determination of offspring sex ratios.  相似文献

Evolutionary theory predicts that dioecious species should produce a balanced primary sex ratio maintained by frequency-dependent selection. Organisms with environmental sex determination, however, are vulnerable to maladaptive sex ratios, because environmental conditions vary spatio-temporally. For reptiles with temperature-dependent sex determination, nest-site choice is a behavioural maternal effect that could respond to sex-ratio selection, as mothers could adjust offspring sex ratios by choosing nest sites that will have particular thermal properties. This theoretical prediction has generated decades of empirical research, yet convincing evidence that sex-ratio selection is influencing nesting behaviours remains absent. Here, we provide the first experimental evidence from nature that sex-ratio selection, rather than only viability selection, is probably an important component of nest-site choice in a reptile with temperature-dependent sex determination. We compare painted turtle (Chrysemys picta) neonates from maternally selected nest sites with those from randomly selected nest sites, observing no substantive difference in hatching success or survival, but finding a profound difference in offspring sex ratio in the direction expected based on historical records. Additionally, we leverage long-term data to reconstruct our sex ratio results had the experiment been repeated in multiple years. As predicted by theory, our results suggest that sex-ratio selection has shaped nesting behaviour in ways likely to enhance maternal fitness.  相似文献

The local-resource-competition hypothesis predicts that where philopatric offspring compete for resources with their mothers, offspring sex ratios will be biased in favour of the dispersing sex. This should produce variation in sex ratios between populations in relation to differences in the availability of resources for philopatric offspring. However, previous tests of local resource competition in mammals have used indirect measures of resource availability and have focused on sex-ratio variation between species or individuals rather than between local populations. Here, we show that the availability of den sites predicts the offspring sex ratio in populations of the common brushtail possum. Female possums defend access to dens, and daughters, but not sons, occupy dens within their mother's range. However, the abundances of possums in our study areas were determined principally by food availability. Consequently, in food-rich areas with a high population density, the per-capita availability of dens was low, and the cost of having a daughter should have been high. This cost was positively correlated with male bias in the sex ratio at birth. Low per capita availability of dens was correlated with male bias in the sex ratio at birth.  相似文献

The Trivers and Willard model predicts that offspring of dominant mothers will be biased toward males and offspring of subordinate mothers towards females, whereas a local-resource-competition hypothesis predicts the reverse. Available data bearing upon these alternative predictions are inconsistent. It has been suggested that the local-resource-competition hypothesis will predominate when resources are scarce, and the Trivers-Willard hypothesis when resources are abundant. The relationship between maternal dominance and secondary sex ratio for 214 offspring of 61 females was examined using four troops of wild yellow baboons living in Mikumi National Park, where the population was increasing in a resource-rich habitat. For all troops combined, no significant relationship was found between offspring sex ratio and maternal rank. The four troops separately showed inconsistent trends, and in no case did the relationship reach conventional levels of statistical significance. In contrast, the local resource-competition hypothesis was supported by a study of yellow baboons done with one troop and 80 offspring in Amboseli National Park, where a massive population decline had occurred. The contrasting Amboseli and Mikumi results may be due to differences in resource-competition at the two study sites, or to stochastic variation. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory predicts that mothers should adjust their sex-specific reproductive investment in relation to the predicted fitness returns from sons versus daughters. Sex allocation theory has proved to be successful in some invertebrate taxa but data on vertebrates often fail to show the predicted shift in sex ratio or sex-specific resource investment. This is likely to be partly explained by simplistic assumptions of vertebrate life-history and mechanistic constraints, but also because the fundamental assumption of sex-specific fitness return on investment is rarely supported by empirical data. In short-lived species, the time of hatching or parturition can have a strong impact on the age and size at maturity. Thus, if selection favors adult sexual-size dimorphism, females can maximize their fitness by adjusting offspring sex over the reproductive season. We show that in mallee dragons, Ctenophorus fordi, date of hatching is positively related to female reproductive output but has little, if any, effect on male reproductive success, suggesting selection for a seasonal shift in offspring sex ratio. We used a combination of field and laboratory data collected over two years to test if female dragons adjust their sex allocation over the season to ensure an adaptive match between time of hatching and offspring sex. Contrary to our predictions, we found no effect of laying date on sex ratio, nor did we find any evidence for within-female between-clutch sex-ratio adjustment. Furthermore, there was no differential resource investment into male and female offspring within or between clutches and sex ratios did not correlate with female condition or any partner traits. Consequently, despite evidence for selection for a seasonal sex-ratio shift, female mallee dragons do not seem to exercise any control over sex determination. The results are discussed in relation to potential constraints on sex-ratio adjustment, alternative selection pressures, and the evolution of temperature-dependent sex determination.  相似文献

A strong interest shown by females towards infants other than their own is one of the most consistent behavioral traits found in primates, including humans. Species differences exist, however, in the extent mothers allow other group members to interact with their offspring. Socioecological theory predicts that in species characterized by relaxed, egalitarian dominance relations mothers should allow extensive interactions between their infants and other individuals from the first weeks of life, while in species characterized by nepotistic and despotic dominance relations maternal tolerance of infant handling should be low. While this model received some support from a comparison between colobines and some cercopithecines, several other species, including the Barbary macaque, do not appear to fit easily into the framework. In fact, only about half of all well-studied species follow the predicted pattern, suggesting that other factors, associated with the costs and benefits of the behavior, must be invoked to explain the variation in mothering styles and infant handling found in primates.  相似文献

  • 2 This method is applied to sex-ratio data from a larval parasitoid, Aphidius ervi Haliday, and a pupal parasitoid, Coccygomimus turionella L., parasitizing a range of host types.
  • 3 There was no evidence of facultative control of primary sex-ratio in either species. Parasitoid emergence sex-ratios were similar for all host sizes attacked by C. turionella. In contrast, emergence sex-ratios of A.ervi showed a significant male bias in smaller hosts. This shift in emergence sex-ratio was attributable to differential progeny survival.
  • 4 Pre-emergence mortality in both species was a function of host size, with few offspring surviving from small hosts. This suggests that host size may be an important component in the dynamics of host-parasitoid interactions.

Social relationships between mothers and juvenile offspring were examined in captive, socially-living vervet monkeys (Cercopithecus aethiops sabaeus) to assess the effects of offspring age and sex, and the mother's dominance rank on behavioural interactions. The results indicate that both high-and low-ranking mothers approach and groom their daughters more than they approach and groom their sons. The frequency of both aggressive behaviour toward offspring and support of offspring in agonistic encounters with other group members is influenced by the mother's dominance rank, but not by offsprin sex. Compared to sons, daughters (particularly daughters of high-ranking females) approach and groom their mothers more often, and support their mothers more often in intra-group aggression. The results are discussed in terms of several predictions from parental investment theory and the concept of mutualism.  相似文献

Observations of uniquely marked females of the solitary, twig-nesting bee, Osmia bruneri, were conducted under greenhouse conditions to test several predictions of sex-ratio and parental-investment theory. In support of Fisher's (1958) theory, we found that the observed sex-ratio of progeny in this dimorphic species did not differ from that expected on the basis of average male and female weights. Investment patterns also exhibited a seasonal component: female parents produced more female than male offspring early in the nesting season but reversed this pattern later. Interfemale variability was large for all nesting parameters examined. Neither female-parent size nor the rate at which females completed cells was significantly related to several estimates of parent fitness. Parent-offspring heritability for size was also low. We found no evidence to support the hypothesis that progeny sex-ratios are influenced by maternal condition. Variance in progeny sex-ratios was large, but the population sex-ratio probably departs frequently from the equilibrium value. The results marginally support Kolman's (1960) prediction of large variance in progeny sex-ratios in large panmictic populations. We conclude that variability among females in investment patterns and variability in size among progenies are probably maintained by such factors as resource heterogeneity and the shape of the adult survivorship curve.  相似文献

Many organisms produce offspring with sex-ratios that deviate from equal numbers of males and females, and numerous adaptive explanations have been proposed. In some species, offspring sex-ratio varies across the reproductive season, again with several explanations as to why this might be adaptive. However, patterns for birds and mammals are inconsistent, and multiple factors are likely involved. Long-term studies on a variety of species may help untangle the complexity. I analyzed a long-term data set on the variation in offspring sex-ratio of the big brown bat, Eptesicus fuscus, a temperate-zone, insectivorous species. Sex ratio varied seasonally, but only in some years. Births early in the season were significantly female biased in years in which parturition occurred relatively early, but not in years with late parturition. Survival of female pups increased with earlier median birth date for the colony, and early-born females were more likely to survive and reproduce as one-year olds, compared to later-born pups. I argue that, due to the unusual timing of reproductive activities in male and female bats that hibernate, producing female offspring early in the year increases their probability of reproducing as one year olds, but this is not the case for male offspring. Thus, mothers that can give birth early in the year, benefit most by producing a female pup. The relative benefit of producing female or male offspring varies depending on the length of the growing season and thus the time available for female pups to reach sexual maturity. This suggests that not only does sex-ratio vary seasonally and among years, depending on the condition of the mother and the environment, but also likely varies geographically due to differences in season length.  相似文献

Differences in dominance rank among red deer (Cervus elaphus) females (hinds) on Rhum were related to their breeding success as well as to the comparative success of male and female offspring. Males (stags) born to mothers above median rank were more successful than hinds, while hinds born to subordinate mothers were more successful than stags. The ratio of male to female calves produced by dominant mothers was significantly higher than that produced by subordinates. Since dominance rank among hinds is related to their body weight as adults and to their birth weight, these results suggest that the birth sex ratio may be affected by environmental factors operating during a female's early development.  相似文献

Sex allocation theory predicts that parents should bias offspring sex to maximize their fitness in a given context. Quantifying the fitness benefits of offspring sex-ratio biases would be facilitated by a better knowledge of their underlying mechanism(s) and associated costs. The hypothesis that steroid hormones are involved in sex determination has gained in popularity recently. Being influenced by external stimuli and involved in a range of physiological processes, they could be a ubiquitous mediator of environmental conditions influencing sex-ratio with low fitness costs. Previous studies indicated that higher maternal testosterone levels led to the overproduction of sons around conception in both birds and mammals. We conducted a systematic review (including meta-analysis) of these studies and, as predicted, we found a weak positive and significant overall effect of maternal testosterone on the proportion of sons. Neither taxa, nor the type of study (experimental/observational), or the timing of timing testosterone manipulation/measure were significant predictors of offspring sex-ratio, which may be explained by low statistical power in addition to low variability between effect sizes. Our meta-analysis provides evidence for a general positive influence of maternal testosterone around conception on the proportion of sons across birds and mammals, although less confidently so for the latter. It begs for more large-scale experimental studies, especially on mammals, and ideally in the wild. It may also have some important consequences for the poultry industry.  相似文献

Our epidemiological and genetic analyses of sporadic and familial retinoblastoma indicate that an X-chromosome-linked gene is involved in the genesis of a significant fraction of new bilateral cases of the disease. The activity of this gene results in sex-ratio distortion in favor of males among patients with bilateral sporadic disease. Among the offspring of these males, both sex-ratio distortion in favor of males and transmission-ratio distortion in favor of affecteds are observed. We propose that these phenomena are due to the inability of these males to erase the genome imprint established on the half of the genome inherited from their mothers.  相似文献

The fitness associated with behavioural strategies is usually estimated in terms of offspring number and size. However, in group-living animals the reproductive value of offspring may also depend on their social rank. We show here that in an allodapine bee Exoneura robusta, dominant mothers can behaviourally influence their daughters'' reproductive rank by controlling insemination of other potential mothers. In E. robusta, group living is near mandatory and reproductive dominance among female nestmates is determined by order of adult emergence. Nests are single, undivided burrows and the dominant female assumes a guarding position closest to the nest entrance. We show that before the egg-laying period, subordinate females who have been absent from the nest are ''screened'' by the reproductive guard upon attempted re-entry. Those who have been in contact with foreign males are less likely to be granted access back into the nest than those who have been in contact with foreign females or with no bees at all. We argue that by controlling insemination patterns of their nestmates, dominant females ensure that their own daughters eclose first and are therefore more likely to assume dominance in the next generation. This presents a situation where dominance is bequeathed to daughters by behavioural means. The ability of mothers to influence social hierarchies in subsequent generations introduces a fitness component additional to the number and size of offspring produced.  相似文献

We investigate an instance of conflict between mates over the sex ratio of their brood. We construct a kin-selection model for the evolution of the sex ratio assuming local resource competition (LRC) among females. We explore two basic scenarios: (a) the case where parents make simultaneous sex-ratio decisions (the simultaneous allocation model); and (b) the case where parental sex-ratio decisions occur one after the other (the sequential allocation model). In the simultaneous investment model, resolution of the conflict between mates depends on the extent to which relative paternal contribution influences the brood sex ratio. In the sequential allocation model, fathers determine primary sex-ratio through fertilization bias; then mothers modify the paternal sex-ratio decision by adjusting the level of investment of some resource that contributes to offspring survival. Under the sequential model, a compromise is always achieved; however this compromise favours one perspective or the other, depending on the extent to which maternal investment influences offspring survival.  相似文献

The Trivers–Willard hypothesis predicts that natural selection should favor unequal parental investment between daughters and sons based upon maternal condition and offspring reproductive potential. Specifically, it predicts that mothers in good condition should increase investment toward sons, while mothers in poor condition should favor daughters. Previous tests of the hypothesis in human populations overwhelmingly focused on economic resources as maternal condition indicators. We test the Trivers–Willard hypothesis using maternal nutrition—energy and vitamin A status representing macro- and micronutrition, respectively—as the indicator for maternal condition, with breastfeeding frequency recalls serving as the indicator for parental investment. Data from exclusively breastfeeding mothers (n=83) in drought-ridden Ariaal agropastoral villages of northern Kenya were used to test the hypothesis that mothers in poor condition will breastfeed daughters more frequently than sons. Poor condition was defined as having a body mass index <18.5 or serum retinol (vitamin A) concentration <1.05 µmol/l. A linear regression model was applied using breastfeeding frequency as the dependent variable and respective maternal condition, infant's sex, and the maternal condition–infant's sex interaction as the predictors, controlling for covariates. Results supported the hypothesis only in the vitamin A model which predicts that low-vitamin-A mothers breastfeed daughters significantly more frequently than sons (11 vs. 6 times/day), while vitamin-A-sufficient mothers breastfeed daughters and sons equivalently (9 times). These results indicate that maternal nutritional status, particularly micronutrient status, can contribute to the investigation of the evolutionary hypothesis of sex-biased parental investment.  相似文献

Together with the avoidance of any negative impact of inbreeding, preservation of genetic variability for life‐history traits that could undergo future selective pressure is a major issue in endangered species management programmes. However, most of these programmes ignore that, apart from the direct action of genes on such traits, parents, as contributors of offspring environment, can influence offspring performance through indirect parental effects (when parental genotype and phenotype exerts environmental influences on offspring phenotype independently of additive genetic effects). Using quantitative genetic models, we estimated the additive genetic variance for juvenile survival in a population of the endangered Cuvier's gazelle kept in captivity since 1975. The dataset analyzed included performance recording for 700 calves and a total pedigree of 740 individuals. Results indicated that in this population juvenile survival harbors significant additive genetic variance. The estimates of heritability obtained were in general moderate (0.115–0.457) and not affected by the inclusion of inbreeding in the models. Maternal genetic contribution to juvenile survival seems to be of major importance in this gazelle's population as well. Indirect genetic and indirect environmental effects assigned to mothers (i.e., maternal genetic and maternal permanent environmental effects) roughly explain a quarter of the total variance estimated for the trait analyzed. These findings have major evolutionary consequences for the species as show that offspring phenotypes can evolve strictly through changes in the environment provided by mothers. They are also relevant for the captive breeding programme of the species. To take into account, the contribution that mothers have on offspring phenotype through indirect genetic effects when designing pairing strategies might serve to identify those females with better ability to recruit, and, additionally, to predict reliable responses to selection in the captive population.  相似文献

The Trivers & Willard hypothesis (TWH) predicts that females with more resources should bias their maternal investment toward offspring of the sex that is most likely to benefit from those additional resources. This paper examines the sex allocation of 61 female mountain gorillas (Gorilla beringei beringei) of the Virunga volcanoes, Rwanda from 1967 to 2004. Like most highly dimorphic, polygynous mammals, mountain gorillas are expected to show greater variance in reproductive success among males than females, so mothers in good condition should bias their investment toward sons. Using dominance rank as the indicator of maternal condition, the TWH was tentatively supported by our results with interbirth intervals (IBI). Dominant mothers had longer IBI following the birth of sons, relative to the longer IBI that subordinate mothers had with daughters. In contrast, maternal condition did not have a significant effect on birth sex ratios. We also found no significant relationships with other variables that might influence birth sex ratios (e.g., maternal age, parity, or group size), and the overall birth sex ratio was not significantly different from a 50:50 split. Collectively, our results suggest that female mountain gorillas do not control the sex ratio of their offspring at birth, but they may adjust their subsequent maternal investment. This conclusion is consistent with recurring questions about whether any adjustments in birth sex ratios occur in primates.  相似文献

Background

In many gregarious mammals, mothers and offspring have developed the abilities to recognise each other using acoustic signals. Such capacity may develop at different rates after birth/parturition, varying between species and between the participants, i.e., mothers and young. Differences in selective pressures between species, and between mothers and offspring, are likely to drive the timing of the onset of mother-young recognition. We tested the ability of Australian sea lion mothers to identify their offspring by vocalisation, and examined the onset of this behaviour in these females. We hypothesise that a rapid onset of recognition may reflect an adaptation to a colonial lifestyle.

Principal Findings

In a playback study maternal responses to own pup and non-filial vocalisations were compared at 12, 24 and every subsequent 24 hours until the females'' first departure post-partum. Mothers showed a clear ability to recognise their pup''s voice by 48 hours of age. At 24 hours mothers called more, at 48 hours they called sooner and at 72 hours they looked sooner in response to their own pup''s vocalisations compared to those of non-filial pups.

Conclusions

We demonstrate that Australian sea lion females can vocally identify offspring within two days of birth and before mothers leave to forage post-partum. We suggest that this rapid onset is a result of selection pressures imposed by a colonial lifestyle and may be seen in other colonial vertebrates. This is the first demonstration of the timing of the onset of maternal vocal recognition in a pinniped species.  相似文献

In species that produce broods of multiple offspring, parents need to partition resources among simultaneously growing neonates that often differ in growth requirements. In birds, multiple ovarian follicles develop inside the female at the same time, resulting in a trade-off of resources among them and potentially limiting maternal ability for sex-specific allocation. We compared resource acquisition among oocytes in relation to their future sex and ovulation order in two populations of house finches with contrasting sex-biased maternal strategies. In a native Arizona population, where mothers do not bias offspring sex in relation to ovulation order, the male and female oocytes did not show sex-specific trade-offs of resources during growth and there was no evidence for spatial or temporal segregation of male and female oocytes in the ovary. In contrast, in a recently established Montana population where mothers strongly bias offspring sex in relation to ovulation order, we found evidence for both intra-sexual trade-offs among male and female oocytes and sex-specific clustering of oocytes in the ovary. We discuss the importance of sex-specific resource competition among offspring for the evolution of sex-ratio adjustment and sex-specific maternal resource allocation.  相似文献
