The subspecies of saddle-back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) are known to be chromatically and morphologically diverse but little is known of the genetic basis for the observed morphological variation. The morphology of first generation subspecific hybrids can be compared to that of the parental subspecies to provide information on the extent and nature of genetic differences in morphology between subspecies. We compare two groups of saddle-back tamarin hybrids (S. f. illigeri × S. f. lagonotus and S. f. illigeri × S. f. leucogenys) to pure-bred members of their parental subspecies. These crosses were examined for heterosis, caused by allele frequency differences between the subspecies in combination with directional dominance. Thirty-nine craniofacial measurements were derived from three-dimensional coordinates of landmarks on 355 adult tamarin skulls. These measurements were corrected for sex differences and differences due to environment (wild-derived vs. laboratory-born) prior to analysis of hybridity. Sex differences were minimal for these traits. Environment had a more significant effect on craniofacial morphology. Laboratory environments produce larger faces but smaller orbits, anterior cranial vaults, and cranial bases. Significant heterosis was found for many individual traits and for the first principal component representing size and size-related shape measurements in the S. f. illigeri × S. f. lagonotus cross. The smaller samples involved in the S. f. illigeri× S. f. leucogenys cross led to a much lower number of statistically significant results, although most traits did display heterosis. Heterosis for craniofacial size was nearly statistically significant. These results suggest that there are large differences in allele frequencies among these subspecies of saddle-back tamarin for genes affecting craniofacial morphology. Based on these data we suggest that these subspecies are likely to be independent, largely isolated, evolutionary units. © 1993 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

The systematics of the Saguinus oedipus group within the bare-face tamarins remains open to question. Hershkovitz (Living New World Monkeys (Platyrrhini), Vol. 1. Chicago: University of Chicago Press, 1977) places the cotton-top and rufus-naped tamarins as subspecies of Saguinus oedipus (S. o. oedipus and S. o. geoffroyi, respectively). In contrast, several other authors have argued that these two taxa should be considered separate species (S. oedipus and S. geoffroyi). Phylogenetic relationships within the group are also disputed. Resolving these different interpretations has been difficult in part because no study of this group has included an objective measure of expected levels of specific vs. subspecific variation. We used facial measurements from 179 adult crania to address the systematics of this group and included a related species that is known to include multiple subspecies. Our sample included three taxa from the S. oedipus group of the bare-face tamarins (S. oedipus, S. geoffroyi, and S. leucopus) and six subspecies from the related hairy-face tamarin species S. fuscicollis. Comparisons to S. leucopus provided a relative measure of species-level differences. Analyses that included S. fuscicollis provided a measure of subspecific variation. There was no evidence of facial sexual dimorphism in any of these taxa. A variety of multivariate statistical analyses including discriminant function and cluster analysis suggest that S. oedipus and S. geoffroyi differ morphologically at a level consistent with species-level distinctions. The extent of differences between these taxa is large. The differences in their facial morphology was on the order of differences between S. oedipus or S. geoffroyi and S. leucopus rather than the extent of variation among S. fuscicollis subspecies. Furthermore, a comparison of collecting localities revealed that the variation we observed among S. oedipus and S. geoffroyi was not clinal but presented a large morphological discontinuity at the boundary between taxa. Our analyses also suggested that S. leucopus is more similar to S. oedipus than is either to S. geoffroyi. Finally, it may be that there are some distinct species within the S. fuscicollis group. However, this hypothesis, along with other phylogenetic relationships suggested by this study, will require more data and further study. © 1992 Wiley-Liss, Inc.  相似文献

In the South American primate, Saguinus fuscicollis, complexscent marks consisting mainly of the secretions of specializedcircumgenital skin glands and some urine communicate the identityof the species, subspecies and individual, its gender, hormonalcondition and social status. The volatile constituents of thesemarks are squalene and a series of butyric acids, comprising96% (by weight) of the mark, and also a large number of as yetunidentified highly volatile compounds. Monitoring of the relativeconcentrations of squalene and the butyrate esters in the scentmarks of male Saguinus f. fuscicollis and Saguinus f. illigeridemonstrates that the two subspecies show consistent differencesin their concentration profiles. The profiles of individualpurebred males closely resemble those of the appropriate subspecieswhile those of hybrids do not. Moreover, the concentration profilesof individual purebred males and hybrids are remarkably constantover long periods of time. Behavioral studies suggest that specificratios of these compounds may be involved in encoding subspeciesspecificity. However, synergists from the highly volatile compoundsappear to be necessary for complete encoding of the message.  相似文献

Interspecific hybridization between closely related mammalian species, including various species of the genus Mus, is commonly associated with abnormal growth of the placenta and hybrid foetuses, a phenomenon known as hybrid placental dysplasia (HPD). The role of HPD in speciation is anticipated but still poorly understood. Here, we studied placental and foetal growth in F1 crosses between four inbred mouse strains derived from two house mouse subspecies, Mus musculus musculus and Mus musculus domesticus. These subspecies are in the early stage of speciation and still hybridize in nature. In accordance with the maternal–foetal genomic conflict hypothesis, we found different parental influences on placental and foetal development, with placental weight most affected by the father's body weight and foetal weight by the mother's body weight. After removing the effects of parents’ body weight, we did not find any significant differences in foetal or placental weights between intra‐subspecific and inter‐subspecific F1 crosses. Nevertheless, we found that the variability in placental weight in inter‐subspecific crosses is linked to the X chromosome, similarly as for HPD in interspecific mouse crosses. Our results suggest that maternal–foetal genomic conflict occurs in the house mouse system, but has not yet diverged sufficiently to cause abnormalities in placental and foetal growth in inter‐subspecific crosses. HPD is thus unlikely to contribute to speciation in the house mouse system. However, we cannot rule out that it might have contributed to other speciation events in the genus Mus, where differences in the levels of polyandry exist between the species.  相似文献

Segregation for self-fertility has been studied in progenies from the crosses of self-sterile (SS) plants with interline hybrids obtained by a diallel scheme of pollinations between seven self-fertile (SF) lines (nos. 2–8) and with F1 (SS plant x SF line) hybrids. All the offspring families from the SS plant x F1 (SS plant x SF line) crosses demonstrated a 1SF1SS segregation. The crosses of SS plants with some interline hybrids gave only self-fertile plants, whereas the crosses with other interline hybrids gave a segregation of 3SF:1SS expected in the case of digenic segregation. The data obtained permitted us to identify three different S loci (S1, S2, S5) and to estimate the genotypes of self-fertile lines for their Sf alleles: lines 5, 6, 7 and 8 are S1f/S1f S2n/S2n S5m/S5m, line 4 is S1n/S1n S2f/S2f S5m/S5m, and lines 2 and 3 are S1n/S1n S2m/S2m S5f/S5f(Sn, Sm designate active alleles of the incompatibility genes). The identification of the particular S gene which is presented by the Sf allele in each line has been made on the basis of our data concerning the linkage of the Sf mutation with isozyme markers of particular rye chromosomes, which is reported in an accompanying paper.  相似文献

Saguinus fuscicollisproduces scent marks which consist mainly of a mixture of urine and the secretions of circumgenital scent glands. The present study investigates the ability of saddle-back tamarins to discriminate between scent material from conspecifics and corresponding material from other species and to differentiate material from two subspecies of Saguinus fuscicollis.When choices between urine samples from conspecifics and from guinea pigs and choices between urine samples from conspecifics and from common marmosets were offered, the tamarins investigated samples from conspecifics more frequently. Similar responses were obtained when choices between scent marks from saddle-back tamarins and from common marmosets and between scent marks from saddle-back and red-chested moustached tamarins were offered. The tamarins also discriminated between scent marks and between extracts of scent marks from Saguinus f. fuscicollisand Saguinus f. illigeri.In these choice tests, subjects of both subspecies tended preferentially to investigate material from Saguinus f. fuscicollis.The results of these studies show that urine and scent marks contain chemical cues on which recognition of conspecifics can be based. Moreover, the scent marks of closely related subspecies also offer cues which could enable the tamarins to discriminate between them.  相似文献

A comparative study of 20 blood genetic systems was performed on three populations of genusSaguinus: S. fuscicollis weddelli, S. midas niger, andS. midas midas. Some markers are useful for the characterization of the two species.ADA 5, ADA6, CA23, CA24, andES2 2 occur only inS. fuscicollis whileADA 4is fixed inS. midas. S. midas midas showed heterozygosity value comparable to those previously obtained for the genusAlouatta. Estimates of genetic distance betweenS. fuscicollis andS. midas species of about 14% are in accordance with those referred to in the literature for interspecific differences. Genetic distances between subspecies ofSaguinus midas were nearly 3%, which is within the range for subspecies.  相似文献

Saxifraga cuneifolia L. (sect. Gymnopera, Saxifragaceae) is a plant distributed in the main mountain ranges of southern Europe, from the eastern Pyrenees to the eastern Carpathian. Currently, two subspecies are recognized based on morphological characteristics: S. cuneifolia subsp. cuneifolia grows in the Maritime Alps and North Apennines and S. cuneifolia subsp. robusta is located in the remaining area of distribution. A more delicate form and a smaller number of flowers in S. cuneifolia subsp. cuneifolia are the morphological characteristics that differentiate this subspecies from the widespread S. cuneifolia subsp. robusta. To explore the genetic diversity and the subspecific geographic patterns of S. cuneifolia s. l. we conducted a molecular study of nuclear and plastid sequences. Samples of S. cuneifolia s. l. have been analysed throughout the distribution area of this species. Our results, based on nuclear (ITS) and plastid (rbcL, trnL–F, and psbA–trnH) markers, showed a genetic characterization of both subspecies presenting discriminant haplotypes and ribotypes that confirm the current subspecific systematics.  相似文献

After crossing experiments between twoChironomus subspecies the HLE hybrid dysgenesis syndrome occurs non-reciprocally in the F1 hybrids if the males of each of the fourCh. th. thummi strains (HL, So, G, Kr) are crossed to females ofCh. th. piger, strain E. In hybrid egg masses, differences in the strength of the abnormal trait reduced egg hatch were found between the differentpiger E ×thummi interstrain crosses. From the results it is concluded that eachthummi strain has a specific hybrid dysgenesis potential which determines the severity of the HLE syndrome in the hybrids. The HLE syndrome occurs also in the hybrids of crosses of differentCh. th. thummi strains. In these hybrids the syndrome is only obtained if the male parent descends from a strain which has a higher HLE hybrid dysgenesis potential than that strain from which the female parent is derived. These results demonstrate that the HLE syndrome is not restricted to the hybrids of thethummi × piger subspecies cross. In theCh. th. thummi interstrain crosses the hybrids of that cross direction are normal, which is reciprocal to the cross direction affected by the HLE syndrome. This is in contrast to thethummi × piger subspecies crosses, where the hybrids of one cross direction always show the HLE syndrome and the hybrids of the reciprocal cross direction the Rud syndrome. Thus, the present study also demonstrates that the HLE and Rud hybrid dysgenesis syndrome inChironomus are independent from one another.  相似文献

Efforts to breed Callitrichidae in captivity have resulted in high fertility accompanied by high infant mortality. This paper investigates the relationship between reproductive characteristics and survivorship in the Oak Ridge and Associated Universities (ORAU) callitrichid colony. Records of 2,834 individuals were analyzed using Cox Proportional Hazards regression to investigate factors affecting infant survivorship. Species and birth cohort were found to have a significant (P less than 0.05) effect on survivorship. Litter size also was an important factor in determining survivorship. Individuals born into singlet and twin litters had significantly (P less than 0.001) higher survivorship than triplets. Factors which affect survivorship perinatally (0-1 months of age), prior to breeding age and subsequent to the first month of life were then investigated. Litter size was a significant (P less than 0.05) factor in determining survivorship perinatally, with twins having significantly higher survivorship than both singlets and triplets. After the first month of life, litter size no longer showed a significant effect on survivorship. Records of 145 dams were analyzed using the same procedures to investigate reproductive characteristics associated with survivorship. Age at first litter showed a significant (P less than 0.01) positive relationship with dam survivorship. These results suggest various factors affect survivorship at specific temporal points during development, and also suggest selection for survivorship perinatally to be strongly associated with litter size, possibly through sibling competition and maternal effects.  相似文献

Saddle-back tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) have been differentiated into subspecies based on coat color and facial morphology. Morphology of first-generation genetic hybrids can provide an understanding of population differences and evolution that may otherwise be difficult to obtain. This study compares postcranial morphology in two hybrids of saddle-back tamarins (S. f. illigeri x S. f. lagonotus and S. f. illigeri x S. f. leucogenys) to the purebred subspecies. We examine whether postcranial morphology differs between the purebred subspecies and their hybrids, and whether hybrids exhibit heterosis indicative of genetic differences between the parental subspecies. Fifty postcranial dimensions, or traits, were measured on 287 S. fuscicollis skeletons. Measurements were corrected for sex differences and environmental differences (wild-derived or laboratory-born). Females were larger than males for most postcranial dimensions, especially in the pelvis. Significant environmental differences were found throughout the postcranial skeleton, with wild-derived animals generally larger than animals born in the laboratory. Significant heterosis was found for six postcranial traits in the S. f. illigeri x S. f. leucogenys cross, and heterosis was found for 15 postcranial traits in the S. f. illigeri x S. f. lagonotus cross. These results suggest that subspecies differences in skeletal morphology are generally due to genetic rather than environmental differences. The subspecies appear to represent geographic isolates that differ in gene frequencies and directional dominance for skeletal traits.  相似文献

This study examined fertilization rates, survival and early life‐trait differences of pure farm, wild and first generation (F1) hybrid origin embryos after crossing farm and wild Atlantic salmon Salmo salar. Results show that despite a trend towards higher in vitro fertilization success for wild females, differences in fertilization success in river water are not significantly different among crosses. In a hatchery environment, wild females' progeny (pure wild and hybrids with wild maternal parent) hatched 7–11 days earlier than pure farm crosses and hybrids with farm maternal parents. In addition, pure wild progeny had higher total lengths (LT) at hatch than pure farm crosses and hybrids. Directions in trait differences need to be tested in a river environment, but results clearly show the maternal influence on early stages beyond egg‐size differences. Differences in LT were no longer significant at 70 days post hatch (shortly after the onset of exogenous feeding) showing the need to investigate later developmental stages to better assess somatic growth disparities due to genetic differences. Higher mortality rates of the most likely hybrids (farm female × wild male hybrids) at egg and fry stages and their delayed hatch suggest that these F1 hybrids might be less likely to survive the early larval stages than wild stocks.  相似文献

We assessed prezygotic (probability of spawning) and postzygotic (hatching success) reproductive isolation among the three ecologically and morphologically similar species in the Fundulus notatus species complex. We employed a multi-generation breeding experiment to test the hypotheses that karyotypic differences, body size differences, or geographic isolation among populations will increase pre or postzygotic reproductive barriers. Overall, prezygotic barriers were strong and postzygotic barriers weak in crosses of non-hybrid heterospecifics (F1 hybrid crosses) while prezygotic barriers were weaker and postzygotic barriers stronger in crosses involving hybrid individuals (F2 hybrid crosses and backcrosses). Prezygotic barriers among the two smaller species (Fundulus notatus and F. euryzonus) broke down rapidly; first generation hybrids spawned (F2 hybrid crosses and backcrosses) as frequently as parental forms in intraspecific crosses. There was no increase in postzygotic barriers among species with cytogenetic differences. There were increased prezygotic, but not postzygotic, barriers among geographically isolated populations of one species. While pure males and females were just as likely to spawn with hybrids, some types of hybrid females suffered from increased sterility, but not inviability, over hybrid males. Female sterility was only seen in hybrids with a Fundulus euryzonus parent, while other female hybrids produced viable eggs.  相似文献

Niche separation is likely to play a key role in the formation of mixed-species groups. Saddle-backed tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis) were studied at three sites with different primate communities in northern Bolivia: (1) with red-bellied tamarins,S. labiatus; (2) with emperor tamarins,S. imperator; and (3) without a congeneric species. The degree of association is higher betweenS. labiatus andS. fuscicollis than betweenS. imperator andS. fuscicollis and is related to differences in forest utilization between associating pairs. Niche separation is found to be greater betweenS. labiatus andS. fuscicollis than betweenS. fuscicollis andS. imperator. The mean height and habitat utilization ofS. fuscicollis does not differ greatly across the three sites, nor does the height of tamarins in and out of association. It is concluded that combined with differences in body size and dietary overlap, vertical segregation plays an important role in tamarin polyspecific associations (increasing the potential of both foraging and anti-predatory benefits) and that this is not a consequence of vertical displacement ofS. fuscicollis by its dominant congeners.  相似文献

Chromosome counts on the progeny of crosses between diploid and tetraploid races ofDactylis show that tetraploid hybrids are produced as well as the expected triploids. The relative proportions of 4x and 3x hybrids vary greatly in different crosses, and the data suggest that parental geno-type influences the result. Overall, the frquencies of 3x and 4x hybrids are about equal, with no indication of a difference between the reciprocal 2x×4x and 4x×2x cross-combinations except perhaps in the case of diploids and autotetraploids of the same subspecies. Rare triploid hybrids are found in crosses between diploid subspecies ofDactylis. The mechanisms by which a diploid plant could donate two genomes to its offspring are discussed in relation to theDactylis situation, and the evolutionary significance of 4x hybrids formed in this way is considered.  相似文献

Fertility in first‐generation hybrids of roach, Rutilus rutilus, and silver bream, Blicca bjoerkna, was investigated. Sperm and egg production of hybrids at first sexual maturity were examined. Eggs from female hybrids were artificially fertilized with the sperm of a corresponding hybrid male; a hybrid male from the reciprocal crossbreeding; a parental species male R. rutilus; and a parental species male B. bjoerkna. The results revealed that gametogenesis was normal in female hybrids. However, in male hybrids, a low efficiency of gametogenesis was observed. The semen of male hybrids was extremely dilute, with spermatozoa concentration lower than that in parental species. Nevertheless, these F1 hybrids (males and females) from reciprocal crossbreeding were fertile. F2 and backcross generations were produced, but F2 crosses from the female hybrid and corresponding hybrid male displayed a drastically slower hatching rate. Also higher proportions of deformed embryos were hatched than in other post‐F1‐generation crosses.  相似文献

Crosses were made in all combinations of the six diploid species of the Solarium nigrum complex that occur in North America. Some interspecific pollinations failed to yield viable seed; successful crosses gave rise to moderately to highly sterile F1 hybrids. Results of interspecific crosses suggested phylogenetic relationships that were not completely in accord with those suggested by morphology. Interspecific crosses also gave varied results. All interpopulational crosses within S. interius and S. sarachoides produced fully fertile hybrids. In contrast, hybrids within S. americanum and S. douglasii varied from fully fertile to almost completely sterile. Populations of S. pseudogracile could be divided into two groups which are geographically separated but not morphologically differentiated. Fully fertile hybrids resulted from crosses within a group, whereas crosses between groups gave hybrids with reduced fertility. Four crossing groups were observed within 5. nodiflorum; three of the parental groups are sympatric and are morphologically differentiated. Although hybrid sterility in interspecific crosses is sometimes used to support delimitation of species, the presence of sterility in intraspecific crosses suggests that such an interpretation is unwarranted for the S. nigrum complex. Hybrid sterility, therefore, is not considered to have special taxonomic significance in this complex.  相似文献

 Crossing experiments were conducted to introduce resistance to the root-knot nematodes, Meloidogyne chitwoodi and M. fallax, from various polyploid Central American Solanum spp. into the cultivated potato, S. tuberosum ssp. tuberosum. The most effort was put into producing tetraploid hybrids through inter-EBN (Endosperm Balance Number) crosses. From the crosses of tetraploid S. tuberosum (4 EBN) with tetraploid S. stoloniferum and S. fendleri (both 2 EBN), few seeds were derived that led to viable plants. In vitro culture of immature seeds also yielded several hybrid plants. From crosses of diploid S. tuberosum (2 EBN) with hexaploid S. hougasii (4 EBN) four hybrids were obtained through in vitro culture. Backcrosses were made with selected hybrids and a variable number of seeds was produced depending on the hybrid genotype. The successful introgression of resistance into backcross populations is shown. A scheme is presented for the introgression of traits at a tetraploid level from allotetraploid Solanum species into autotetraploid S. tuberosum through sexual crosses. Saddleback tamarins (Saguinus fuscicollis, S. melanoleucus, and S. tripartitus) occur in the upper Amazon, west of the rios Madeira and Mamoré–Guaporé to the Andes. They currently comprise 13 species and subspecies in Bolivia, Brazil, Colombia, Ecuador, and Peru. Here we report on a previously undescribed subspecies of Saguinus fuscicollis from the interfluvium of the lower rios Madeira and Purus in the central Amazon of Brazil. It is a distinct form with a very pronounced mottling on the back giving the appearance of a saddle, a characteristic shared by the 3 species, and the reason for their collective common name. The lack of a white superciliary chevron and its highly mottled ochraceous-dark brown to black saddle that extends from the scapular region to the base of the tail distinguish the new taxon from Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli. The latter characteristic also distinguishes it from another saddleback tamarin (Saguinus fuscicollis ssp.) that has been reported immediately to the south of its range in the same interfluvium. We compare pelage coloration, external characters and craniometric measurements with its geographically closest relatives, Saguinus fuscicollis weddelli and S. f. avilapiresi, and indicate its probable geographic distribution in a small area between the rios Madeira and Purus, just south of the Rio Amazonas.  相似文献
