Selection for late-life fecundity and longevity in adult Drosophila melanogaster is well known to modify numerous characteristics of life history and physiology. We report experiments here in which selection applied to behavior affects features in an identical fashion. Selection for feeding rate of larval D. melanogaster modifies caloric intake, as measured by the uptake and incorporation of labeled glucose. Selection for slow larval feeding produced lines of D. melanogaster in which larvae synthesized significantly less lipid prior to pupation and eclosed to have low early-life fecundity and a long life as adults. They also had greater lifetime fecundity, but lower viability of egg to hatched adult. Alternatively, fast-feeding larvae incorporated more lipid before pupation and eclosed with high early-fecundity that declined rapidly throughout their short adult life. Slow-feeding populations also had a significantly enhanced expression of the stress-resistance genes CuZn-SOD, CATALASE, and HSP70. Selection on larval feeding behavior reproduced the antagonistic evolutionary trade-off found under selection for adult life span and mimicked the physiological response in life span as seen in many species when dietary restriction is imposed on adults. Thus, nutrient acquisition during development appears to share a common evolutionary and genetic basis with the allocation processes that determine adult life-history traits and the related phenotypic dietary restriction phenomena.  相似文献

Dietary restriction (DR) is a valuable experimental tool for studying the aging process. Primary advancement of research in this area has relied on rodent models, but attention has recently turned toward Drosophila melanogaster. However, little is known about the baseline effects of DR on wild-type Drosophila and continued experimentation requires such information. The findings described here survey the effects of DR on inbred, wild-type populations of Canton-S fruit flies and demonstrate a robust effect of diet on longevity. Over a circumscribed range of dietary conditions, healthy lifespan varies by as much as 121% for wild-type Drosophila females. Significant differences are also observed for male flies, but the magnitude of the DR effect is less robust. Mortality analyses of the survivorship data reveal that this variation in lifespan can be attributed to a modulation of the rate parameter for the mortality function - a change in the demographic rate of aging. Since the feeding of fruit flies is less easily controlled than that of rodents, this research also addresses the validity of applying a DR model to Drosophila populations. Feeding and body weight data for flies given the various dietary conditions surveyed indicate that Drosophila on higher-calorie diets consume a similar volume of food to those on a low-calorie diet, resulting in different levels of calorie intake. Fertility and activity levels demonstrate that the diets surveyed are comparable, and that increasing the calorie content of laboratory food up to twice the normal concentration is not pathologic for experimental fly populations.  相似文献

Darwin's fecundity advantage model is often cited as the cause of female biased size dimorphism, however, the empirical studies of lifetime selection on male and female body size that would be required to demonstrate this are few. As a component of a study relating sexual size dimorphism to lifetime selection in natural populations of the female size-biased waterstrider Aquarius remigis (Hemiptera: Gerridae), we estimated coefficients for daily fecundity selection, longevity selection, and lifetime fecundity selection acting on female body size and components of body size for two consecutive generations. Daily fecundity was estimated using females confined in field enclosures and reproductive survival was estimated by twice-weekly recaptures. We found that daily fecundity selection favored females with longer total length through direct selection acting on abdomen length. Longevity selection favored females with smaller total length. When daily fecundity and reproductive longevity were combined to estimate lifetime fecundity we found significant balancing selection acting on total length in both years. The relationship between daily fecundity and reproductive longevity also reveals a significant cost of reproduction in one of two years. We relate these selection estimates to previous estimates of sexual selection on male body size and consider the relationship between contemporary selection and sexual size dimorphism.  相似文献

A wild-type strain of Drosophila melanogaster was successfully selected for both fast and slow larval development. The realized heritabilities (h2) ranged from 0.20 to 0.30 for the fast lines and 0.35 to 0.60 for the slow lines. The selection applied is relevant in relation to the evolution of aging. The longevity of adults, either virgin or mated, was not affected by selection for developmental time, indicating that developmental time is not a causal determinant of life span, thus confirming the results of the studies on environmental effects on aging (Zwaan et al. 1991, 1992). However, adult body weights were higher in the slow developmental lines and lower in the fast lines, relative to the control flies. Furthermore, slow females showed relatively high early fecundity and low late fecundity, as compared with control and fast females. Mated longevities and total lifetime progeny productions were not statistically different. Previous results obtained by other authors from selection experiments on age at reproduction either supported the mutation accumulation or the negative pleiotropy theory of aging (Luckinbill et al. 1984; Rose 1984b). The impact of the reported results on the interpretation of these studies is discussed, and it is noted that direct selection on adult longevity is needed to settle this issue.  相似文献

The possible associations between longevity, early fecundity, and stress-resistance traits were explored using artificial selection on longevity in a laboratory population of Drosophila buzzatii . Three replicated lines were selected for increased lifespan (L lines) and compared with the respective unselected controls (C lines) after the 14th generation of selection. Mean longevity exhibited a significant response to selection. The baseline mortality tended to decrease in the L lines and a negative correlated response to longevity selection was found for early fecundity. Egg-to-adult developmental time increased in L lines. Longevity selection increased stress resistance for both high and low temperatures, as measured by heat knockdown resistance and chill-coma recovery. Starvation resistance also tended to be higher in L than in C lines. The results obtained are consistent with the hypothesis of trade-offs between longevity and early fecundity, and also suggest a trade-off association between adult longevity and developmental time. The reaction norm linking rearing temperature and size in Drosophila melanogaster results in progressively larger flies as the temperature is lowered from 30°C to 18°C, but it has remained unclear whether this phenotypic plasticity is part of an adaptive response to temperature. We found that female D. melanogaster reared to adulthood at 18°C versus 25°C showed a 12% increase in dry weight. Measurements of the fecundity of these two types of fly showed that the size change had no effect on lifetime fecundity, regardless of the adult test temperature. Thus the phenotypic plasticity breaks the usual positive correlation between body size and fecundity. However, at a given temperature, early fecundity (defined as productivity for days 5 through 12 after eclosion at 25°C and days 7 through 17 at 18°C) was highest when the rearing and test temperatures were the same. The early fecundity advantage due to rearing at the test temperature was 25% at 18°C and 16% at 25°C, a result consistent with the overall phenotypic response to temperature being adaptive. This conclusion is further supported by the finding that the temperature treatments resulted in a trade-off between early fecundity and longevity, a trade-off that parallels the known genetic correlation. Another parallel is that both the temperature-induced and genetic effects are independent of total fecundity. By contrast, within the temperature treatments, the phenotypic correlation between early fecundity and longevity was positive, illustrating the danger of assuming that phenotypic and genetic correlations are similar, or even of the same sign.  相似文献

采用随机完全区组设计对5年生麻疯树Jatropha curcas种源林进行结实性调查。结果表明,不同种源麻疯树单株产种量有不同程度的差异,云南元阳种源最高,达218.96 g,四川盐边种源最低,仅为48.42 g。不同种源麻疯树种子平均含油率也有所不同,广西隆林种源最高,达42.80%,贵州望谟种源最低,为37.23%。单株产种量与种源地纬度、年均气温显著相关,而与种源地无霜期极显著相关,其中与纬度为负相关,与年均气温、无霜期为正相关,说明纬度较低、气温较高和无霜期较长的种源在福建平和县的单株产种量高。而种子平均含油率与各地理气象因子之间没有显著相关性。根据单株产种量和种子平均含油率聚类分析,分别将9个种源分成优、良、中、差4个不同的类别,综合来看,云南东南部和广西西北部可能是麻疯树的优良种源区,该区域内的5个种源,单株产种量达147.43 g,种子平均含油率达41.07%。  相似文献

The predatory bugsOrius insidiosus andOrius albidipennis are potential candidates for biocontrol of the thrips,Frankliniella occidentalis. Laboratory experiments showed thatO. albidipennis lays significantly more eggs thanO. insidiosus while its life cycle is shorter. Deleterious alleles constantly enter populations via mutation. Their presence reduces mean fitness and may threaten population persistence. It has been suggested that sexual selection may be an efficient way by which deleterious alleles are removed from populations but there is little direct experimental evidence. Because of its potential role in mutational meltdowns, there is particular interest in whether the strength of sexual selection changes with density. For each of eight visible markers in Drosophila melanogaster we have compared the strength of sexual selection at two densities. We find evidence of strong sexual selection against most but not all of these alleles. There is no evidence that sexual selection tends to be stronger (or weaker) at high density relative to low density. In addition, we also measure the effects of these mutations on two key parameters relevant to population productivity--juvenile viability and female fecundity. In most cases, sexual selection is as strong or stronger than these other forms of selection.  相似文献

In outbred sexually reproducing populations, age‐specific mortality rates reach a plateau in late life following the exponential increase in mortality rates that marks aging. Little is known about what happens to physiology when cohorts transition from aging to late life. We measured age‐specific values for starvation resistance, desiccation resistance, time‐in‐motion, and geotaxis in ten Drosophila melanogaster populations: five populations selected for rapid development and five control populations. Adulthood was divided into two stages, the aging phase and the late‐life phase according to demographic data. Consistent with previous studies, we found that populations selected for rapid development entered the late‐life phase at an earlier age than the controls. Age‐specific rates of change for all physiological phenotypes showed differences between the aging phase and the late‐life phase. This result suggests that late life is physiologically distinct from aging. The ages of transitions in physiological characteristics from aging to late life statistically match the age at which the demographic transition from aging to late life occurs, in all cases but one. These experimental results support evolutionary theories of late life that depend on patterns of decline and stabilization in the forces of natural selection.  相似文献

Senescence is predicted to be associated with the intensity and timing of reproduction at an earlier age. Here, we examine the phenotypic association between reproduction and post‐reproductive survival in three pre‐industrial human populations that lived in Northern Scandinavia during 1640–1870. In both sexes longevity was independent of the total number of born or adult children, whereas early reproduction was negatively associated with the longevity of females and males. Our results thus do not support the view that reproductive investment as such has a negative impact on longevity, but suggest that survival costs are associated with the scheduling of reproduction. We discuss, however, an alternative point of view suggesting that less intense selection for early reproduction, extended parental care, and social structure allowing kin selection through the effects of close relatives are factors that have selected for the long post‐reproductive life span in humans.  相似文献

The study of the early stages of speciation can benefit from examination of differences between populations of known history that have been separated for a short time, such as a few thousands of generations. We asked whether two lines of Drosophila melanogaster that were isolated more than 40 years ago have evolved differences in life-history characters, or have begun to evolve behavioural or postzygotic isolation. One line, which is resistant to DDT, showed lower egg production and a shorter lifespan than a susceptible line. These differences are not a pleiotropic effect of resistance because they are not attributable to the chromosome that contains the resistance factors. The two lines have begun to become behaviourally isolated. Again, the isolation is not attributable to genes on the chromosome that contains resistance factors. The lines show only prezygotic isolation; there is no evidence of reduced fitness of F1 or F2 hybrids. These lines and others like them, should be excellent subjects for analyses of genetic changes that could lead to speciation.  相似文献

【目的】为了探讨施钾对苜蓿上牛角花齿蓟马Odontothrips loti的产卵选择、生长发育、成虫寿命和繁殖力的影响,明确施钾苜蓿叶片营养物含量与牛角花齿蓟马生命参数的关系。【方法】在不同钾量(40, 60, 80和100 mg/kg)处理下(以不施钾作为对照),观察记录牛角花齿蓟马在紫花苜蓿品种甘农3号Medicago sativa cv. Gannong No. 3叶片上的产卵量,幼期各龄期发育历期和存活率以及二代成虫的寿命和繁殖力,同时测定不同施钾量下苜蓿叶片的可溶性糖、游离氨基酸及钾含量。【结果】随着施钾量的增加,牛角花齿蓟马在苜蓿叶片上的产卵量(粒/复叶)先降低后升高,在60 mg/kg钾处理降幅最大,较对照降低了45.58%;卵孵化率和1-2龄若虫的存活率变化不显著,但3-4龄若虫的存活率和幼期总存活率显著下降,分别在100 mg/kg 和80 mg/kg钾处理下降幅最大,较对照分别下降了54.36%和48.48%。不同施钾量下苜蓿叶片上牛角花齿蓟马卵和1-2龄若虫发育历期无显著变化,3-4龄若虫及幼期总发育历期均延长;牛角花齿蓟马二代成虫的繁殖力均显著下降,成虫寿命显著缩短(40 mg/kg钾处理除外)。施钾后,苜蓿叶片可溶性糖含量、钾含量和糖氮比增大,游离氨基酸含量减少。相关关系分析表明,苜蓿叶片钾含量与牛角花齿蓟马幼期总存活率和成虫繁殖力无显著相关性,而苜蓿叶片可溶性糖含量和糖氮比均与3-4龄若虫存活率和繁殖力极显著负相关,与幼期总存活率呈显著负相关。【结论】施钾苜蓿对牛角花齿蓟马成虫产卵产生显著的排趋性;施钾提高了苜蓿叶片的可溶性糖含量及糖氮比,不利于若虫的生长发育,并使成虫寿命缩短、繁殖力下降,对牛角花齿蓟马产生了显著的抗生作用。  相似文献

We tested for the occurrence of oviposition acceptance for different media prepared with cactus tissues of three alternative cactus hosts: Opuntia sulphurea, O. quimilo and Trichocereus terschekii for 4 consecutive days in lines of two Drosophila buzzatii populations and one population of D. koepferae. Our results showed that the former laid significantly more eggs on both Opuntia cacti than on T. terschekii, whereas D. koepferae preferred T. terschekii. In addition, fecundity schedules differed between species: D. buzzatii laid similar numbers of eggs along the four-day sampling period, whereas D. koepferae showed an oviposition peak on the second day of egg collection on T. terschekii. We suggest that the between-species disparities observed in oviposition acceptance and fecundity schedule may be related to the temporal and spatial predictability of Opuntia versus T. terschekii (cardón) as part of the different adaptive strategies that have evolved after the split of D. koepferae and D. buzzatii from their recent common ancestor. Therefore, the willingness to accept hosts would be an important factor in the habitat selection and in the maintenance of species diversity.  相似文献

This paper analyzes the interaction between resistance to free radicals, development under starvation conditions, sex, and its consequences to the lifespan of Drosophila mela-nogaster populations selected for developmental time and longevity. Our data suggest that the interaction between these physiological and environmental parameters is modulated largely by the pre-imaginal developmental time, since the response to selection for longevity extremes depends strongly on the previous selection for developmental time extremes.  相似文献

Biologists who study the timing of development in insects have focused on variation in duration of pre‐adult stages almost without exception. However, development is not complete until adults are not only morphologically mature, but also reproductively mature. Here we describe an experiment in the fruit fly, Drosophila simulans, in which we used artificial selection to create lines with shortened and lengthened duration from eclosion to the age when the first egg was laid. We found significant genetic variation for this trait. The response to selection on age when the first egg was laid was due to variation among females. Delayed adult development was correlated with rapid pre‐adult development and longer life span in females. The approach we use here resolves some difficulties with previous approaches used to study the genetics of senescence, and provides an opportunity to study the hitherto unexamined predictions derived from classic models for the evolution of senescence.  相似文献

The effect of temperature on the rate of development ofAnastatus biproruli (Girault) was determined by rearing individuals on eggs ofBiprorulus bibax Breddin under a range of constant temperatures (17.5–40.0°C). Rate of development changed in a linear fashion from 17.5–35.0°C and the lower developmental threshold was estimated to be 12.8°C. An estimated 331.8 degree days were required for development. Survival of developing parasitoids was optimal (72–90%) between 25–35°C. Longevity of virgin adults ranged from 12–26 days at 22.5–35°C but was only 3.6 days at 37.5°C. Mated females produced a mean of 54.6 progeny during an average lifespan of 36.4 days at 30°C. Progeny were produced only during the first 21 days of adulthood but post-reproductive females still attacked and killed hosts. FemaleA. biproruli overwintered successfully, and were able to parasitise host eggs if direct sunlight was available.A. biproruli also overwintered as immature stages in host eggs. The biology ofA. biproruli is discussed with regard to its importance as a natural enemy ofB. bibax.  相似文献

A number of studies have documented the evolution of female resistance to mate‐harm in response to the alteration of intersexual conflict in the populations. However, the life‐history consequence of such evolution is still a subject of debate. In this study, we subjected replicate populations of Drosophila melanogaster to different levels of sexual conflict (generated by altering the operational sex ratio) for over 45 generations. Our results suggest that females from populations experiencing higher level of intersexual conflict evolved increased resistance to mate‐harm, in terms of both longevity and progeny production. Females from the populations with low conflict were significantly heavier at eclosion and were more susceptible to mate‐harm in terms of progeny production under continuous exposure to the males. However, these females produced more progeny upon single mating and had significantly higher longevity in absence of any male exposure—a potential evidence of trade‐offs between resistance‐related traits and other life‐history traits, such as fecundity and longevity. We also report tentative evidence, suggesting an increased male cost of interacting with more resistant females.  相似文献

温度和湿度的变化对亚洲玉米螟0strinia furnacalis(Guenee)成虫的交配和产卵及寿命都具有极显著的影响。在16℃~32℃和RH20%~100%的温湿范围中,亚洲玉米螟成虫繁殖力在20℃~28℃恒温和RH70%~100%的温湿组合中较大,其中在24℃恒温和28℃~20℃变温与RH90%~100%的组合中为最大,在32℃和RH20%的组合中为最小。单雌抱卵量、产卵量和产出卵率及交配次数均与温度呈抛物线曲线关系,与湿度呈正相关。温、湿度对成虫繁殖力具有极显著的交互作用。成虫寿命与温湿度密切相关,温度越高,成虫寿命越短;而湿度越高,成虫寿命越长。但雄蛾比雌蛾较耐低湿,在16℃~24℃下雄蛾寿命比雌蛾较长。此外,雄蛾较强的交配能力可促进卵的发育和产出。以上结果对玉米螟种群动态消长的分析和预测预报提供了参考依据。  相似文献
