The lateral projection area (LPA) hypothesis was investigated by presenting female guppies, Poecilia reticulata with a series of paired males in three experiments. One trait was held constant in each experiment (dorsal fin size in expt I, body size in expt II, and total LPA in expt III) while body: dorsal fin ratio varied. Females spent more time near dummies of greater body and dorsal fin size in experiments I and II. The preference functions based on the first two sets of stimuli showed a similar pattern: the greater the LPA difference between paired dummies, the stronger the preference for the larger of the two. However, in the third experiment, neither fin size, body size, nor any particular dorsal fin + body size combination was preferred. These findings support the LPA hypothesis suggesting that increased LPA is more stimulating to sexually receptive females, and that females consequently prefer larger males. Preference for increased male dorsal fin size/LPA in both P. latipinna and P. mexicana as demonstrated in previous studies, and the more distantly related P. reticulata (shown here) is consistent with common ancestry of the sensory/neural systems in females of all three species and perhaps the entire Poeciliid family.  相似文献

In one field and two laboratory experiments, wild, wild-captured and partly laboratory-raised 16 to 18-day old great tit nestlings were subjected to repeated presentations of auditory stimuli of varying biological significance. The frequency of occurrence of the stimuli in the study area was censused. — All nestlings showed strong aversive reactions to the ‘seeet’ alarm-call of the species. It is concluded that a selective responsiveness to this call develops independently of previous exposure to it. A functional interpretation of this reaction is derived from its presumed adaptive value. Three hypothetical interpretations are suggested to explain its emergence in the individual nestling; The ‘seeet’-call elicits aversive reactions because of, 1) its novelty, 2) its intensity in terms of relative concentration of energy over its frequency range and 3) its contrasting acoustic structure compared to the nestlings' begging-call which has become strongly associated with approach behavior.  相似文献

The growth response of an ornamentalRhododendron hybrid to the inoculation withPhialocephala fortinii was studied in two pot experiments in order to decide about the effectiveness of the inoculation of young rhododendron microplants. Two different substrates were used in both experiments, either sterilized or non-sterilized: a horticultural substrate and a soil collected from a field site with dominant ericoid vegetation. Two fungal isolates were used for an inoculation:P. fortinii strain P (UAMH 8433) andP. fortinii strain F, a dark septate endophyte (DSE) previously isolated from naturally-infected roots ofVaccinium myrtillus. BothPhialocephala strains successfully colonized the roots of the host plants forming typical DSE (=pseudomycorrhizal) colonization pattern including the formation of intracellular microsclerotia. However, pseudomycorrhizal colonization did not affect the growth parameters of the host rhododendrons. The results from both experiments indicate a neutral effect of the inoculation with DSE fungi on the growth ofRhododendron cv. Belle-Heller.  相似文献

In L. pardalinum, narrow bands of quinacrine fluorescence are distributed throughout the chromosomes. These vary in intensity from dull to bright, and their constant pattern allows all chromosomes to be recognized. Bright bands occur at some centromeres, and near all three nucleolar constrictions. In L. longiflorum, similar Q-bands occur along chromosomes, but they are less distinctive and their pattern does not closely match that of L. pardalinum. Also, L. longiflorum does not have bright regions at or near primary and secondary constrictions. Most Q-bands do not coincide with dark Giemsa C-bands, except for the bright nucleolar and centromeric regions in L. pardalinum. All C-banded heterochromatin stains identically after SSC pretreatment, dark with Giemsa and bright with quinacrine.— The many Q-bands of varying intensity, wide distribution and constant pattern, unrelated to C-bands, may be analogous to mammalian Q-bands. Such universality is expected if Q-bands area fundamental component of chromosome architecture.  相似文献

It is known that the level of cGMP is modulated in plant cells in response to a number of stimuli but intracellular events dependent on cGMP metabolism are not clear. Guanylyl cyclases (GCs) are enzymes which are responsible for synthesis of cGMP in eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells. To collect evidence for the participation of cGMP in light signal transduction we isolated enzyme with guanylyl cyclase activity from Pharbitis nil and analysed its level and activity during photoperiodic flower induction. Soluble proteins were isolated from seedlings of a model short-day plant P. nil, partly purified and identified by in vivo and in vitro enzyme assay. In green plants enzyme activity amounted to 484 nmol cGMP/min/mg protein, whereas in etiolated plants it was three times lower (158 nmol cGMP/min/mg protein). Analyse cyclase consists of a single polypeptide of Mr 40 kDa. In order to determine if changes in guanylyl cyclase activity occurred in response to a long, inductive night, we measured enzyme activity in 4-h intervals and observed its increase at 4, 8 and 16 h of darkness. This pattern also fits well with changes in the endogenous cGMP level during a 16 h long flower inductive night. Immunocytochemical analysis confirmed these observations and revealed that changes in the GC level during light/dark conditions appeared. During 16 h long inductive night the strongest signal was observed in cotyledons after 4 and 16 h of the darkness. A high level of fluorescence was generally distributed in mesophyll, however, it was also observed in guard cells. Staining was apparently absent in the veins and cotyledon body. Furthermore, the location inside the cell was analysed. The protein was immunolocalized preferentially in the cytosol, chloroplasts and peroxysomes. Taken together, these data demonstrate in Pharbitis nil the presence of an enzyme which is able to convert GTP to cGMP. Because its level and activity are affected by light we believe that GC/cGMP play a substantial role in light/dark dependent process in plants, such as photoperiodic flower induction.  相似文献

Various learning tasks have been described in Drosophila melanogaster, flies being either tested in groups or at the individual level. Le Bourg and Buecher (Anim Learn Behav 33:330–341, 2002) have designed a task at the individual level: photopositive flies crossing a T-maze learn to prefer the dark exit when the lighted one is associated with the presence of aversive stimuli (humidity and quinine). Previous studies have reported various results (e.g. no effect of age) and the present article further characterizes this task by studying the possible effects of: (1) the intensity of the stimuli (quantity of water or concentration of quinine), (2) various delays between two learning sessions on the learning score at the second session, (3) the rutabaga learning mutation on the learning score. More concentrated quinine solutions increased learning scores but the quantity of water had no effect. Learning scores at the second session were higher with shorter delays between the two learning sessions and retrograde amnesia could decrease this memory score. rutabaga mutants showed learning deficits as in experiments testing groups of flies. This learning task could particularly be used to verify whether learning mutants isolated after experiments testing flies in groups display similar deficits when tested at the individual level.  相似文献

Prey species may reduce the likelihood of injury or death by engaging in defensive behavior but often incur costs related to decreased foraging success or efficiency. To lessen these costs, prey may adjust the intensity or type of antipredator behavior according to the nature of the perceived threat. We evaluated the potential for threat‐sensitive responses by Allegheny Mountain dusky salamanders (Desmognathus ochrophaeus) exposed to chemical stimuli associated with predation by asking three questions: (1) Do individual D. ochrophaeus respond to chemical cues in a threat‐sensitive manner? (2) Do salamanders exhibit the same pattern of behavioral response while foraging? and (3) Is foraging efficiency reduced when focal individuals are exposed to stimuli from predators or predation events? In our first experiment, we evaluated salamander chemosensory movements (nose‐taps), locomotor activity (steps), and edge behavior in response to chemical stimuli from disturbed and injured conspecifics as well as predatory Gyrinophilus porphyriticus and found that individual D. ochrophaeus show a significant graded increase in nose‐taps when exposed to cues from conspecifics and a reduction in activity when exposed to the predator. In our second experiment, we again observed salamander responses to the same chemical stimuli but in this instance added five Drosophila prey to the test dishes. We found that salamanders exhibited a similar pattern of response to the chemical stimuli in the presence of prey, showing a graded increase in nose‐taps to cues from conspecifics and a reduction in activity when exposed to the predator. However, foraging efficiency (i.e. the proportion of successful strikes) did not vary significantly among treatments. Our data show that individual D. ochrophaeus detect and differentially respond to chemical stimuli associated with predation, but do not significantly reduce foraging efficiency. Overall, the type and relative intensity of these responses is largely unaffected by the presence of potential prey.  相似文献

SYNOPSIS. Acetate added to autotrophic Euglena cultures changed the period length of the circadian rhythm of phototaxis. Phase shifts were induced by acetate pulses. Since transition from one metabolic state to another (autotrophic/mixotrophic) caused a phase shift or a period change, such effects possibly result from switching metabolic pathways. As suggested (Brinkmann, K., 1966. Planta 70 , 344–89), differences in the temperature responses of the rhythm in mixotrophic and autotrophic cells might also be caused by participation of different metabolic pathways with different Q10 values, e.g. dark reactions vs photochemical reactions. However the Q10 of a given dark reaction, e.g. protein synthesis, can differ in the 2 states. Therefore temperature experiments alone do not suffice for deciding whether the pathways include photochemical reactions, dark reactions, or both.  相似文献

Previous studies that have looked at the aversive properties of simple, predator-related, eye-like patterns presented in an artificial context, have yielded conflicting results. The aim of the present series of experiments was to investigate whether such stimuli had potential for use as bird scarers. The starling (Sturnus vulgaris) was the subject species. The experimental procedure was designed to provide a relevant and objective, interval scale of aversiveness based upon the ability of eye patterns to deter hungry birds from a feeding area. Each subject was deprived of food for 5 h and then tested in an apparatus which exposed an eye pattern over a food trough immediately after the bird alighted on that trough. 10 measures of the starlings' feeding behaviour were monitored over a 1-h trial. It was predicted that five of these variables would be positively and five negatively correlated with an increase in the fear evoking properties of the stimulus. The 10 measures were analysed using principal component analysis and the first component in every experiment had the signs of the latent vectors of the variables exactly in the predicted pattern and therefore appeared to be an ‘aversiveness index’. The scores from this first component were then used in a Latin square ANOVA to distinguish subject, test order and stimulus effects. The main findings from the eight experiments are as follows. Simple eye-like patterns can indeed deter hungry starlings from feeding in their vicinity. The presence of a pair of eyes painted on a white card caused an 88% reduction in time spent on the nearby food trough and a 65% reduction in actual feeding time. The presence of ‘pupils’ in the patterns is essential for simple circles alone are not significantly more aversive than the control card. Once a pattern has the ‘pupil/iris’ distinction then a circular outline becomes important although the shape of the ‘pupil’ appears relatively unimportant. Eyes with coloured irises are more effective than black and white patterns but the degree of contrast between the ‘pupil’ and ‘iris’ appears irrelevant. Increasing the number of simultaneously presented eyes from one to three is correlated with an increasing trend in aversiveness which is destroyed if the same stimuli are presented within the context of a simple head outline. Changing the orientation of a pair of eyes from horizontal to vertical only slightly reduces their aversiveness. The size of the patterns appears to be unimportant within the range tested. The aversive properties of eyespots and of broadcast starling distress calls are positively additive. The effectiveness of a stimulus combining all the important features mentioned is as aversive as is a realistic model of the head of an owl.  相似文献

Almost all species of the orchid genus Ophrys are pollinated by sexual deception. The orchids mimic the sex pheromone of receptive female insects, mainly hymenopterans, in order to attract males seeking to copulate. Most Ophrys species have achromatic flowers, but some exhibit a coloured perianth and a bright, conspicuous labellum pattern. We recently showed that the pink perianth of Ophrys heldreichii flowers increases detectability by its pollinator, males of the long-horned bee Eucera berlandi. Here we tested the hypothesis that the bright, complex labellum pattern mimics the female of the pollinator to increase attractiveness toward males. In a dual-choice test we offered E. berlandi males an O. heldreichii flower and a flower from O. dictynnae, which also exhibits a pinkish perianth but no conspicuous labellum pattern. Both flowers were housed in UV-transmitting acrylic glass boxes to exclude olfactory signals. Males significantly preferred O. heldreichii to O. dictynnae flowers. In a second experiment, we replaced the perianth of both flowers with identical artificial perianths made from pink card, so that only the labellum differed between the two flower stimuli. Males then chose between both stimuli at random, suggesting that the presence of a labellum pattern does not affect their choice. Spectral measurements revealed higher colour contrast with the background of the perianth of O. heldreichii compared to O. dictynnae, but no difference in green receptor-specific contrast or brightness. Our results show that male choice is guided by the chromatic contrast of the perianth during the initial flower approach but is not affected by the presence of a labellum pattern. Instead, we hypothesise that the labellum pattern is involved in aversive learning during post-copulatory behaviour and used by the orchid as a strategy to increase outcrossing.  相似文献

1. The underlying basis of alternative male reproductive strategies is either genetic or environmental. Several non‐pollinating fig wasp lineages have dimorphic males, typically with winged males that disperse from natal figs to mate and flightless males that seek mating opportunities in natal figs. 2. Walkerella sp. from Ficus benjamina has dark and pale wingless males. Observations and experiments in Xishuangbanna, Southern China found that (i) the sex ratio of Walkerella sp. did not vary with foundress number or brood size. (ii) The frequency of dark males increased with brood size and foundress number and they were absent from figs with a single foundress. This produced a higher proportion of dark males at higher densities. (iii) Males of both morphs fought, but injuries to dark males were more frequent. (iv) Dark males were more likely to disperse away from their natal figs and (v) they were more resistant to dehydration. 3. Responses to selection are constrained by the genetic options available. Consequently, selection pressures acting on different lineages can produce similar outcomes that are achieved in different ways. Walkerella species lack winged males, but dark males display some of their features, dispersing from natal figs and displaying appropriate physiological and behavioural adaptations. However, dark males also displayed increased levels of damage from fighting – a feature unlikely to be shared with the winged males of other species.  相似文献

Actively foraging lizards use the lingual-vomeronasal system to identify prey by chemical cues, but insectivorous ambush foragers do not. The major clade Iguania includes numerous herbivores and omnivores; among them, two iguanid and one agamine species identify plant and animal foods by tongue flicking, and data suggest that the leiolepidine Uromastyx acanthinurus may as well. We conducted experiments on chemosensory response to food by the herbivorous U. aegyptius. When chemical stimuli were presented on cotton balls in experiment 1, the lizards exhibited greater responsiveness (tongue-flick attack scores) to chemical stimuli from crickets and a preferred plant food (dandelion flowers) than from deionized water. When chemical stimuli were on ceramic tiles in experiment 2, the lizards exhibited greater total tongue flicks to cricket stimuli than to any other stimuli, and to dandelion than to deionized water. Lizards bit more frequently in response to cricket and dandelion cues than to stimuli from a nonpreferred plant (carrot) and deionized water. Tongue-flick attack scores were greater in response to cricket and dandelion stimuli than to carrot or water stimuli. These findings are consistent with the hypothesis that herbivores, even those having ambush-foraging ancestors, use chemical cues to identify potential foods. The data support the hypothesis that chemosensory responses correspond to diet. Because most lizards are generalist predators, studies of herbivorous species can provide important information on possible evolutionary adjustment of chemosensory response to dietary shifts. Comparative electroretinographic studies of the d-wave evoked with long duration photo stimuli in dark- and light-adapted fish species (three marine and three freshwater) were performed. At the end of prolonged photo-stimulation in scotopic conditions a negative d-wave appears in electroretinograms of dogfish shark, eel and goldfish diminishing and eventually changing with intensity of photo-stimulation, while in rudd it only increases. Dark-adapted electroretinograms of two percids (perch and painted comber) exhibit a positive d-wave that approaches the b-wave amplitude under bright photopic conditions. Judging from the d-wave, only the rod pathway is active in dark-adapted dogfish shark, eel, and goldfish. Under the light adaptation, cone pathways are active in eel and goldfish, whereas the positive response to the end of light stimuli in dogfish shark could be explained by independent ON and OFF pathways from outer to inner retina via bipolar cells. In the case of two percids, dark adaptation has no influence on cone pathways. The d-wave of rudd behaves like cone-driven d-waves but in opposite sign. The data thus show that the d-wave form, amplitude and sign depend on interconnection of ON and OFF pathways as determined by the state of adaptation and/or type of photoreceptor.  相似文献

Waxy maize was first reported in China in 1909 and is mainly used in food production in Asia. The evidence for strong domestication selection in the Waxy locus of rice and a selective sweep around its genomic region make us to wonder whether there has been similar selection in Waxy in glutinous maize. To address this issue, DNA sequences of Waxy, three flanking genes and an unlinked gene (Adh1) of 30 accessions sampled from Chinese waxy maize accessions, including representative landraces and inbred lines, were determined in this study. Sharp reduction of nucleotide diversity and significant neutrality tests (Tajima’s D and Fu and Li’s F*) were observed in the Waxy locus in Chinese waxy maize but not in nonglutinous maize; comparison with the unlinked gene confirmed that this pattern was different to Waxy. Sequence analysis across a 143 kb genomic segment centered on the Waxy locus revealed patterns consistent with a selective sweep in the upstream region of Waxy. The selective sweep detected based on current limited genomic sequences exceeded over 50 kb, indicating strong selection in this or a bigger region. However, No sweep effect was detected in the repetitive downstream region of Waxy. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that Chinese waxy maize was domesticated from the cultivated flint maize (Zea mays ssp. mays) that was introduced from the new world. At least two independent deletions in exon 7 (30 bp) and 10 (15 bp) were identified in the Chinese accessions respectively. These findings demonstrate a similar pattern of domestication selection in the Waxy genomic region in both glutinous maize and rice, suggesting that this pattern in the rise of glutinous phenotype is likely in other cereal crops.  相似文献

Three functional classes of neurons are described in the visual cortex of the Siberian chipmunk: neurons not selective for direction of movement and orientation, neurons selective for movement in a particular direction, and neurons selective for orientation. Unselective and directionally-selective neurons were activated maximally at speeds of movement of 100–500 deg/sec or more, most orientation-selective neurons at speeds of 10–50 deg/sec. For all three classes of neurons clear correlation was observed between selectivity for velocity of movement and character of responses to presentation of stimuli stationary in the receptive field. With reference to this sign the neurons were divided into two groups: phasic (fast) and tonic (slow). Phasic (fast) neurons predominate in the visual cortex ofEutamias sibiricus.A. N. Acoustic predator recognition has rarely been studied in anurans, in spite of the fact that hearing is widespread in these animals and that it has been demonstrated to play an important role in both arthropods and other vertebrates. Using field playback experiments, we tested the hypothesis that adult common toads (Bufo bufo) are capable of recognizing natural vocalizations of a common predator, the Eurasian otter (Lutra lutra), and show antipredator responses. We found that toads exposed to both natural (two types of otter sounds) and synthetic stimuli [white noise (WN) and otter sound‐based amplitude modulated WN] increased time allocated to locomotion and escape behaviour. These responses were correlated with time elapsed from sunset to the onset of testing and were independent from the type of acoustic signal, toad features and other environmental factors monitored. We conclude that B. bufo has not developed a selective recognition of predator vocalizations, suggesting that low‐frequency or seismic sounds associated with predator movements may provide anurans with better cues about an approaching risk. We propose that the time‐dependent response to acoustic stimuli of common toads represents a case of threat‐sensitivity and demonstrates that it can occur even when the response to the threat is not predator specific.  相似文献

We conducted two experiments that investigated how the method and location of artificial defoliation influenced growth, reproduction, and allocation in canola, Brassica napus. In one experiment, 0%, 25%, or 50% of leaf area was removed by cutting circular holes at three possible locations: concentrated at either the base of leaves or at their tips, or dispersed throughout leaf blades. Plants fully compensated for such damage; reproduction and allocation were unaffected by either defoliation intensity or wound location. In a second experiment, we again initiated three intensities of defoliation: non-damaged plants served as controls, while others had 25% or 50% of their leaf areas removed. The method of removal in the second experiment consisted of cutting either multiple, similar-sized, circular holes or single, contiguous patches of a leaf blade. At the highest defoliation intensity reproductive output and allocation were significantly less in plants treated with the former method than the latter, even though an equivalent initial amount of leaf area was removed in both treatments. We conclude that simulated herbivory studies must account for not only how much of the plant is damaged, but also the pattern of leaf damage itself, since both factors contribute to a plant’s physiological and ecological responses to grazing.  相似文献

Color polymorphisms in animals may result from plasticity of the developmental system in response to genetic cues in the form of allelic variation at polymorphic loci, environmental cues, or a combination of genetic and environmental cues. An increased understanding of the evolution of color polymorphisms requires better knowledge of when we should expect genetic and environmental cues respectively to influence phenotype determination. Theory posits that the developmental systems of organisms should evolve sensitivity to such cues that most accurately predict coming selective conditions. Pygmy grasshoppers (Orthoptera, Tetrigidae) vary in color pattern within and among populations and show fire melanism, i.e., an increased frequency of black and dark colored phenotypes in high density populations inhabiting fire-ravaged areas. We examined if the population density experienced by individuals during development influenced the phenotypic expression of color pattern in Tetrix subulata. Individuals were experimentally reared either in solitude, at intermediate density or under crowded conditions. We found that color patterns of experimental individuals were independent of rearing density but strongly influenced by maternal color pattern. High population density and crowding may not constitute reliable predictors of the selective regime that characterizes post-fire environments.  相似文献

Colour is one cue that monkeys use for perceptual segregation of targets and to identify food resources. For fruit-eating primates such as Saguinus, an accurate colour perception would be advantageous to help find ripe fruits at distance. The colour vision abilities of black-handed tamarins (Saguinus midas niger) were assessed through a discrimination learning paradigm using Munsell colour chips as stimuli. Pairs of chips were chosen from an early experiment with protan and deutan humans. The monkeys (three males and one female) were tested with stimuli of the same hue, but different brightness values, in order to make sure that discriminations were based on colour rather than brightness cues. The results showed that the female, but not the males, presented an above-chance performance for stimuli resembling hue conditions under which tamarins forage (oranges vs greens). Colour vision in S. m. niger is discussed according to the advantages and disadvantages of dichromatism in daily search for food as well as to aspects regarding polymorphism in New World monkeys.  相似文献

The goal of this study was to investigate the time response of two major carbon (C) reserves, respectively neutral lipids (NL) and total carbohydrate (TC), in the Haptophyte Isochrysis sp. growing in nitrogen (N)‐sufficient or N‐starved conditions and under light:dark (L:D) cycles. Experiments were carried out in a cyclostat culture system that allowed the following of the dynamics of the main cell compounds at both hourly and daily time scales. Under N‐sufficient conditions, the L:D cycles cause the population to be synchronized, with most of the cells dividing at the beginning of the dark period. The C‐specific growth rate was maximal around midday and negative during the dark period due to respiration processes. NL and TC both accumulated during the day and consumed during the night. We showed that NL and TC are highly dynamic compounds, as more than three quarters of NL and TC accumulated during the light period were consumed during the dark period. In contrast to NL, phospholipid and glycolipid to C ratios remained quite stable during the light/dark cycles. The major effect of N starvation on the NL and TC dynamics was to uncouple their diel variations from the L:D cycle, in two different ways depending on their respective role during short‐term acclimation. Whereas the TC per cell ratio increased rapidly to reach a stable value in response to N starvation, NL per cell continued to oscillate, but with a pattern out of phase with the L:D cycle.  相似文献
