Summary In the dance language of the western honeybee,Apis mellifera, airborne near field sound signals and a sense of hearing are used to communicate the locations of food sources. In the Asian honeybeeApis dorsata similar acoustical signals have been found recently, whereasApis florea does not emit dance sounds to transfer information about the location of food sources. The aim of the present study was to investigate the sense of hearing in these two species. Operant conditioning experiments reveal that both species are able to detect such near field sounds. The results support the hypothesis of acoustical communication inApis dorsata. The auditory sense ofApis florea, which does not use acoustical signals in the dance language, is discussed as a preadaptation for the evolution of an acoustical dance communication in ancestral honeybees.  相似文献

This study examined the spatio‐temporal reproductive patterns, population structure, maturity and growth of Acanthopagrus hybrid complexes, which comprise mainly black bream Acanthopagrus butcheri and the hybrids they form with yellowfin bream Acanthopagrus australis, in two Australian estuaries (Coila and Brou Lakes, NSW). There were no differences between pure A. butcheri and hybrids in terms of their population structure, growth and maturity, suggesting that these two breeds have similar life histories and may therefore be managed as single, naturally cohesive units. Sexual variation in size structure was only observed for the complex in Coila Lake. Although there was significant variation in age structure between estuaries, both complexes exhibited dominance of only a few year classes indicating episodic recruitment and high fishing mortality. Acanthopagrus eggs occurred in higher numbers within upstream creek habitats compared to lake habitats, thereby highlighting the need to protect these spawning habitats. Although maturity in the complexes was not influenced by gender or estuary, differences in growth were detected between the genders and estuaries.  相似文献

The factors responsible for reproductive isolation between two sibling species of fiddler crabs (Uca pugilator and U. panacea) were studied under both laboratory and field conditions. ♂♂ showed species differences in their visual and acoustical displays. These differences were exaggerated in the overlap zone, where U. pugilator showed character displacement of its acoustic signals. ♀♀ of U. pugilator confined with ♂♂ of U. panacea produced fewer clutches of young. Occasionally, forced matings took place in the laboratory, resulting in hybrids suffering greater mortality through development. The data indicate that both premating (behavioral) as well as postmating (higher larval mortality) barriers act to prevent interbreeding.  相似文献

Copulation calls in primates are usually identified as sexually selected signals that promote the reproductive success of the caller. In this study, we investigated the acoustic structure of copulation calls in bonobos (Pan paniscus), a great ape known for its heightened socio‐sexuality. Throughout their cycles, females engage in sexual relations with both males and other females and produce copulation calls with both partners. We found that calls produced during sexual interactions with male and female partners could not be reliably distinguished in terms of their acoustic structure, despite major differences in mating behaviour and social context. Call structure was equally unaffected by the size of a female’s sexual swelling and by the rank of her mating partner. Rank of the partner did affect call delivery although only with male, but not female partners. The only strong effect on call structure was because of caller identity, suggesting that these signals primarily function to broadcast individual identity during sexual interactions. This primarily social use of an evolved reproductive signal is consistent with a broader trend seen in this species, namely a transition of sexual behaviour to social functions.  相似文献

Feeding behaviors of Japanese monkeys (Macaca fuscata) were compared between a warm temperate habitat (Yakushima Island: 30°N, 131°E) and a cool temperate habitat (Kinkazan Island: 38°N, 141°E). The composition of diet and the activity budget in the two habitats were very different. Time spent feeding on Kinkazan Island was 1.7 times that on Yakushima Island. Two factors seem to be responsible for these: (1) the energy required for thermoregulation of monkeys on Kinkazan Island is greater than that on Yakushima Island; and (2) the food quality, which affects the intake speed of available energy, is lower on Kinkazan Island. However, monkeys in both habitats increased their moving time and decreased their feeding time when they fed on foods of relatively high quality. Such foraging strategies are predicted by optimal foraging models. Time spent social grooming on Yakushima Island was 1.9 times that on Kinkazan Island, although there were slight seasonal changes in both areas. The difference in time spent social grooming might be explained by the overall difference in feeding time and day length between the two habitats.  相似文献

The social parasitic beetle Puussus favieri(Coleoptera,Carabidae,Paussini)performs different types of stridulations,which sclectively mimic those emitted by dif-ferent ant castes of its host Pheidole pallidula(Hymenoptera,Formicidae,Myrmicinae).However,the significance of this acoustical mimicry for the success of the parasitic strat-egy and the behaviors elicited in the host ants by stridulations was unknown.We reared Paussus favieri in Pheidole pallidula colonies and filmed their interacting behaviors.We analyzed in slow motion the behavior of ants near a stridulating beetle.We analyzed sep-arately trains of pulse(Pa+Pb,produced by repeated rubbings)and single pulse(Pc,produced by a single rubbing)of stridulations,clearly recognizable from the shaking up and down of the beetle hind legs.and associated them with differcent ant responscs.The full repertoire of sounds produced by P:favieri elicited benevolent responses both in workers and soldiers.We found that different signals elicit different(sometimes multiplc)bchaviors in ants,with different frequency in the two ant castes.However,Pc(alone or in conjunction with other types of pulses)appears to be the type of acoustic signal mostly responsible for all recorded behaviors.These results indicate that the acoustic channel plays a pivotal role in the host-parasite interaction.Finding that a parasite uses the acoustical channel so intensively,and in such a complicated way to trigger ant bchaviors,indicates that acoustic signals may be more important in ant societies than commonly recognized.  相似文献

For a free‐ranging forager, the suitability of a patch is dependent on population density, resource supply, resource quality, and the costs of foraging or dispersal. We quantified differences among three foraging habitats and compared this variation to temporal patterns of habitat preference by free‐ranging eastern grey kangaroos, Macropus giganteus. We investigated selection on a fine‐grained spatial scale, and asked whether habitat preference is constrained by density‐dependent mechanisms. Variation in the quantity and quality of resources among habitats was greatest during spring, when biomass and quality were highest, and differences among habitats were most pronounced. However, consistent and discernable differences among habitats were not obtained, indicating that the system fluctuated around an equilibrium state. Using isodar regressions to examine the consumer‐density relationships among habitats, open‐woodland habitat was favoured over the two open‐forest habitats for foraging. Seasonal isodars indicated that density dependence regulated preference between the three foraging habitats during autumn, spring and summer, but not during winter, when variability in resources among habitats was lowest.  相似文献

Individuals that settle in poor habitats may reduce resource investments in various life history traits; for example, resources may be withheld from costly advertisement signals. There may be geographic variation in advertisement levels that correspond with habitat quality; however, this is poorly documented and it is unclear whether such habitat effects have consequences for the function of mate‐choice signals within habitats. We examined song output of male black‐capped chickadees (Poecile atricapillus) during the dawn chorus in two contrasting habitats (mature forest vs. young forest) known to differ in quality. Dominance rank is indicative of phenotypic quality in this species and was assessed during the preceding winter. We measured the song output of males participating in the dawn chorus during the nesting/egg laying period. Males living in young forest had reduced song output; however, a habitat–rank interaction term showed that dominant birds accounted for most of this difference. This suggests that signal reliability might be lost in poor habitats. We generate several hypotheses to explain these findings.  相似文献

Urbanization causes dramatic and rapid changes to natural environments, which can lead the animals inhabiting these habitats to adjust their behavioral responses. For social animals, urbanized environments may alter group social dynamics through modification of the external environment (e.g., resource distribution). This might lead to changes in how individuals associate or engage in group behaviors, which could alter the stability and characteristics of social groups. However, the potential impacts of urban habitat use, and of habitat characteristics in general, on the nature and stability of social associations remain poorly understood. Here, we quantify social networks and dynamics of group foraging behaviors of black‐capped chickadees (N = 82, Poecile atricapillus), at four urban and four rural sites weekly throughout the nonbreeding season using feeders with radio frequency identification of individual birds. Because anthropogenic food sources in urban habitats (e.g., bird feeders) provide abundant and reliable resources, we predicted that social foraging associations may be of less value in urban groups, and thus would be less consistent than in rural groups. Additionally, decreased variability of food resources in urban habitats could lead to more predictable foraging patterns (group size, foraging duration, and the distribution of foraging events) in contrast to rural habitats. Networks were found to be highly consistent through time in both urban and rural habitats. No significant difference was found in the temporal clumping of foraging events between habitats. However, as predicted, the repeatability of the clumping of foraging events in time was significantly higher in urban than rural habitats. Our results suggest that individuals living in urban areas have more consistent foraging behaviors throughout the nonbreeding season, whereas rural individuals adjust their tactics due to less predictable foraging conditions. This first examination of habitat‐related differences in the characteristics and consistency of social networks along an urbanization gradient suggests that anthropic habitat use results in subtle modifications in social foraging patterns. Future studies should examine potential implications of these differences for variation in predation risk, energy intake, and information flow.  相似文献

【目的】探究典型盐生药用植物野生乌拉尔甘草在不同盐渍化生境下土壤细菌群落多样性、组成和功能特征,有助于建立土壤盐分与甘草生长发育、药材品质形成相关的微生物组之间的联系,对栽培甘草药材品质提高具有重要意义。【方法】从野生乌拉尔甘草的6个主分布区采集原生境土壤,采用高通量测序技术比较非盐渍(un-salinization, US)、轻度盐渍(light salinization, LS)、中度盐渍(moderate salinization, MS)以及重度盐渍(heavy salinization, HS)生境中土壤细菌群落多样性、组成及功能的差异,并挖掘不同生境中优势细菌。【结果】野生乌拉尔甘草原生境土壤细菌群落丰富度和多样性在轻度盐渍(LS)组和中度盐渍(MS)组中明显高于非盐渍(US)组、重度盐渍(HS)组,且重度盐渍(HS)组最低。主成分分析(principal component analysis, PCA)表明不同盐渍程度组间的野生乌拉尔甘草土壤细菌群落组成和功能具有显著差异(P<0.05);冗余分析(redundancy analysis, RDA)表明,土壤盐分(total salt, TS)既是影响原生境土壤细菌群落组成也是影响群落功能的重要因子。属水平,非盐渍(US)组和轻度盐渍(LS)组中的显著优势细菌相同,均为植物有益菌,包括类诺卡氏菌属(Nocardioides)、链霉菌属(Streptomyces)、栖大理石菌属(Marmoricola);重度盐渍(MS)组中显著优势属既包括有益菌未鉴定_酸杆菌属(unidentified_Acidobacteria),也包括嗜盐菌盐单胞菌属(Halomonas)、海杆菌属(Marinobacter);重度盐渍(HS)组中显著优势细菌以嗜盐菌或耐盐菌为主,包括盐单胞菌属(Halomonas)、海杆菌属(Marinobacter)、楚帕氏菌属(Truepera)、别样矿生菌属(Aliifodinibius)、盐坑微菌属(Salinimicrobium)和需盐杆菌属(Salegentibacter)。PICRUSt功能预测分析强调非盐渍(US)组、轻度盐渍(LS)组和中度盐渍(MS)组中的土壤细菌群落与植物互作方面的潜力,表明非盐渍、轻度盐渍和中度盐渍生境中的有益菌对野生乌拉尔甘草生长发育、品质形成具有重要影响。PICRUSt功能预测同时也强调了重度盐渍(HS)组在自我修复适应高盐环境以及参与野生乌拉尔甘草耐盐性提高方面具有潜能,表明重度盐渍生境中的嗜盐菌和耐盐菌对乌拉尔甘草抗盐能力具有重要作用。中度盐渍生境兼具以上二者优势菌群的特征,是值得关注的类型。【结论】野生乌拉尔甘草土壤细菌群落多样性和丰富度在轻度盐渍和中度盐渍生境中明显高于非盐渍和重度盐渍生境;细菌群落的组成和功能在非盐渍和轻度盐渍生境中具有相似性,并与重度盐渍生境存在显著差异,中度盐渍生境兼具以上二者的特征。  相似文献

Courtship behaviors of insect populations can vary across the range of a species. Populations exhibiting divergent courtship behavior may indicate genetic divergence or cryptic species. Courtship acoustic signals produced by male wing fanning and genetic structure (using amplified fragment length polymorphisms) were examined for seven allopatric populations of the Cotesia flavipes (Hymenoptera: Braconidae) species complex, using four C. sesamiae (Cameron) and three C. flavipes Cameron populations. Members of this species complex parasitize lepidopteran pests in gramineous crops including sugarcane, maize, and rice . Significant variation was detected in courtship acoustic signals and genetic structure among populations of both species. For C. sesamiae, courtship acoustic signals varied more between populations of two biotypes that were collected near an area of sympatry. The two biotypes of C. sesamiae were also genetically divergent. For C. flavipes, significant differences in acoustic signals and genetic structure occurred among allopatric populations; these differences support the recent designation of one population as a new species. Courtship acoustics play a role in reproductive isolation in this species complex, and are likely used in conjunction with chemical signals. Ecological factors such as host range and host plant use may also influence the divergence of both courtship acoustic signals and genetic structure among populations in the C. flavipes complex.  相似文献

Instantaneous growth rates of 0‐group European flounder, Platichthys flesus, obtained from two 9‐day enclosure experiments were used to assess the relative quality of three eelgrass and three bare sand habitats in the Bay of Aarhus, Denmark. Measurements of temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, sediment structure and biomass of benthic macrofauna were made during the experiments. Gut content analysis was performed after retrieval of the fish. Growth rates of flounder at two bare sand sites were higher or equal to growth rates at the three eelgrass sites, and at a muddy bare sand site in both experiments. The variation in gut fullness of flounder between vegetated and bare sand sites followed the pattern observed in growth rates, but diverged from the spatial variation in prey abundance, which indicates that there were differences in the feeding efficiency between sites. Overall, habitat complexity, i.e. the presence or absence of vegetation seems to be the most important factor determining the growth rates and, by corollary, habitat quality for juvenile European flounder in the Bay of Aarhus.  相似文献

Ecological studies based on time‐series often investigate community changes centered on species abundance or biomass but rarely expose the consequential functional aspects underlying such changes. Functional diversity measures have proven to be more accurate predictors for ecosystem functioning than traditional taxonomic approaches and hence gained much attention. There are only limited studies available that analyse the functional implications behind decadal changes of entire communities. We studied zoobenthic communities of two habitats, sheltered and exposed, of a coastal system subject to contrasting changes in community composition over the past four decades. Besides eutrophication and climate‐related impacts, the system has been invaded by a non‐native polycheate Marenzelleria spp., adding altered functional properties to the communities. The functional dispersion (FDis) metric was used as a measure for comparing the functional diversity of the contrasting habitats, with special focus on the role of Marenzelleria for the entire communities. We highlight changes in the functional identity of the communities, expressed as community‐weighted means of trait expression (CWM), using multivariate techniques, and investigate the relationship between taxonomic and functional changes. Despite contrasting community developments in the two habitats, with characteristics traditionally suggesting different environmental quality, we found that the FDis in both habitats remained similar and increased with the introduction of Marenzelleria. Although showing maintained functional diversity across time and space, the functional identity (CWM) of communities changed irrespective of taxonomical differences. Examples include inter alia alterations in palatability proxies, feeding position and sediment transportation types, indicating changed functionality of zoobenthos in coastal systems. We show, when focussing on qualitative functional changes of communities, it is important to evaluate the underlying functional identity, and not only rely on measures of the diversity of functions per se, as the quality indication of expressed functional traits can be concealed when using multi‐functionality approaches.  相似文献

Alders (Alnus spp.) are important components of northern ecosystems due to their ability to fix nitrogen (N) in symbiosis with Frankia bacteria. Availability of optimal Frankia may be a contributing factor in limiting the performance and ecological effects of Alnus, but the factors underlying distribution of Alnus-infective Frankia are not well understood. This study examined the genetic structure (nifD–K spacer RFLP haplotypes) of Frankia assemblages symbiotic with two species of Alnus (A. tenuifolia and A. viridis) in four successional habitats in interior Alaska. We used one habitat in which both hosts occurred to observe differences between host species independent of habitat, and we used replicate sites for each habitat and host to assess the consistency of symbiont structure related to both factors. We also measured leaf N content and specific N-fixation rate (SNF) of nodules (15N uptake) to determine whether either covaried with Frankia structure, and whether Frankia genotypes differed in SNF in situ. Frankia structure differed between sympatric hosts and among habitats, particularly for A. tenuifolia, and was largely consistent among replicate sites representing both factors. Leaf N differed between host species and among habitats for both hosts. SNF did not differ among habitats or host species, and little evidence for differences in SNF among Frankia genotypes was found, due largely to high variation in SNF. Consistency of Frankia structure among replicate sites suggests a consistent relationship between both host species and habitat among these sites. 采用高通量(Illumina Miseq)测序技术对栽培和野生2种生境下川麦冬根围的丛枝菌根(AM)真菌多样性和群落结构进行测定,并结合土壤理化因子进行相关性分析,以明确两种生境下川麦冬根围土壤AM真菌多样性和优势群落的分布特点,探讨AM真菌群落分布差异的驱动因子,为AM真菌应用于麦冬生产提供理论依据和技术支持。结果表明:(1)不同生境下川麦冬根围土壤中共鉴定出AM真菌3属10种,其中野生川麦冬根围土壤鉴定出的AM真菌3属7种,分别隶属于无梗囊霉属(Acaulospora)、多孢囊霉属(Diversispora)和球囊霉属(Glomus),而栽培环境下鉴定出AM真菌1属6种,隶属于球囊霉属。2个生境优势属均为球囊霉属。(2)不同生境下川麦冬根围AM真菌之间存在显著差异,野生生境下川麦冬根围土壤AM真菌多样性指数ACE和Shannon均显著高于人工栽培生境,而Simpson指数则相反。(3)相关性分析表明,AM真菌多样性指数及群落组成结构均与土壤理化因子存在相关性,其中全钾(TK)、全磷(TP)、全氮(TN)对AM真菌多样性指数和群落结构组成均存在显著影响。研究认为,不同生境下川麦冬根围AM真菌群落存在显著差异,球囊霉属为川麦冬互利共生的关键属,TK、TP、TN是不同生境川麦冬根围AM真菌群落差异的主要驱动因子。  相似文献

Aim Bats communicate by emitting social calls, and these often elicit reactions in conspecifics. Many such vocalizations are species‐specific so that unambiguous signals can be transmitted and interpreted by conspecifics. In species‐rich assemblages, evolutionary pressures might prompt interspecific diversification of call structure so that communication with heterospecifics is avoided. In species‐poor island communities, where no risk of miscommunication occurs, stabilizing selection should prevail and preserve call structure and function. Call structure in island bats might be inherited from colonizers from the mainland and be maintained with little change in the absence of selection from heterospecifics. To test this hypothesis we studied Pipistrellus maderensis, an insular taxon occurring on the Madeira Archipelago, the Canary Islands and the Azores. It is closely related to one of the most widespread European pipistrelles, Pipistrellus kuhlii. Pipistrellus maderensis most probably evolved from a common ancestor shared with P. kuhlii, or from founders of that taxon that colonized the islands. We hypothesized that on Madeira Island, where no risk of ambiguous communication with heterospecifics exists, the structure and function of social calls should have been preserved by stabilizing selection. Echolocation calls, subject to different selection pressures, may instead show more pronounced differences between P. maderensis and P. kuhlii. Location Madeira Island (Portugal, Atlantic Ocean), central and southern Italy. Methods We recorded social and echolocation calls from allopatric populations of the two pipistrelles and explored interspecific differences in time and frequency characteristics. We also conducted playback experiments by broadcasting recordings of social calls from P. kuhlii and P. maderensis (taken respectively in peninsular Italy and on Madeira) and monitoring the bats’ responses. Results Social call structure showed a strong similarity between species, whereas echolocation calls were markedly different and exhibited a mean divergence of over 6 kHz in their frequency of maximum energy. On Madeira, P. maderensis significantly reduced flight activity when we broadcast P. kuhlii signals, as did P. kuhlii in Italy in response to P. maderensis calls. Main conclusions Reliable interpretation of social calls provides benefits to both the signaller and the receiver because signals help to optimize food exploitation at foraging sites. In the absence of closely related species that can emit similar calls, this advantage may have acted as a strong evolutionary pressure, stabilizing social call structure in P. maderensis in insular ecosystems with limited foraging resources.  相似文献

土壤微生物组对于生态系统的可持续性至关重要,青藏高原独特的地理环境孕育了多样的极端环境,其土壤细菌组成差异及其驱动因素尚不清楚。【目的】探究不同极端生境土壤细菌多样性及其影响因素。【方法】对7种典型的青藏高原极端生境土壤DNA进行16SrRNA基因高通量测序,通过生物信息分析,找出不同生境细菌群落组成、功能差异;结合土壤理化因子,进一步分析细菌组成差异的潜在影响因素。【结果】通过高通量测序,从7个不同生境的36个土壤样品中共获得16 323 712高质量reads,26 504个可操作分类单元(operational taxonomic units, OTUs)。在门分类水平上,各生境中注释到的放线菌门(Actinomycetota)与假单胞菌门(Pseudomonadota)相对丰度均最高;在属分类水平上,芽孢杆菌属(Bacillus)、Ambiguous_taxa、土壤红杆菌属(Solirubrobacter)、假节杆菌属(Pseudarthrobacter)等为优势属。另外,不同生境中的细菌α多样性无显著差异,但是β多样性差异显著,并且通过LEfSe分析进一步说明了不同生境细菌群...  相似文献

Coastal lagoons represent habitats with widely heterogeneous environmental conditions, particularly as regards salinity and temperature, which fluctuate in both space and time. These characteristics suggest that physical and ecological factors could contribute to the genetic divergence among populations occurring in coastal lagoon and open-coast environments. This study investigates the genetic structure of Holothuria polii at a micro-geographic scale across the Mar Menor coastal lagoon and nearby marine areas, estimating the mitochondrial DNA variation in two gene fragments, cytochrome oxidase I (COI) and 16S rRNA (16S). Dataset of mitochondrial sequences was also used to test the influence of environmental differences between coastal lagoon and marine waters on population genetic structure. All sampled locations exhibited high levels of haplotype diversity and low values of nucleotide diversity. Both genes showed contrasting signals of genetic differentiation (non-significant differences using COI and slight differences using 16S, which could due to different mutation rates or to differential number of exclusive haplotypes. We detected an excess of recent mutations and exclusive haplotypes, which can be generated as a result of population growth. However, selective processes can be also acting on the gene markers used; highly significant generalized additive models have been obtained considering genetic data from 16S gene and independent variables such as temperature and salinity.  相似文献
