Fitness consequences of ovicide in a parasitoid wasp   总被引:2,自引:0,他引:2  
Ovicide, superparasitism and host rejection are alternative reproductive tactics facing female parasitoid wasps encountering an already-parasitized host. Superparasitism is simply the addition of an egg or a clutch of eggs by the secondary parasitoid, but under ovicide the primary clutch is removed or destroyed. Host rejection occurs if the wasp leaves without laying a clutch. The ectoparasitoid Laelius pedatus (Say) (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) performs ovicide in this situation. Clutch manipulation experiments show that secondary clutches suffer high mortality in competition with primary clutches, which increases with increasing time delay between clutches. Primary clutches however suffer little in competition with secondary clutches, even if there is minimal time delay between clutches. These data suggest that the offspring of ovicidal females are substantially fitter than the offspring of superparasitizing females. Handling time and clutch size do not differ significantly between first (sole) parasitoids and second (ovicidal) parasitoids. The same is true for offspring survival and development time. However, offspring of second females are slightly smaller. This suggests that parasitized and unparasitized hosts are resources of similar quality when ovicide is performed. These data strongly support the predictions of evolutionary models of ovicide. They may also give some insight into the taxonomic distribution of ovicide in parasitoids.  相似文献

Although studies on laboratory species and natural populations of vertebrates have shown reproduction to impair later performance, little is known of the age-specific associations between reproduction and survival, and how such findings apply to the ageing of large, long-lived species. Herein we develop a framework to examine population-level patterns of reproduction and survival across lifespan in long-lived organisms, and decompose those changes into individual-level effects, and the effects of age-specific trade-offs between fitness components. We apply this to an extensive longitudinal dataset on female semi-captive Asian timber elephants (Elephas maximus) and report the first evidence of age-specific fitness declines that are driven by age-specific associations between fitness components in a long-lived mammal. Associations between reproduction and survival are positive in early life, but negative in later life with up to 71% of later-life survival declines associated with investing in the production of offspring within this population of this critically endangered species.  相似文献

In barnacle geese Branta leucopsis, pair-bond members generallyremain together every day, each year, often for life. Geesethat maintain long-lasting pair bonds during their lifetimeproduce more offspring than those with shorter pair durations.This result was shown while statistically controlling for thebirds' life span and the proportion of life spent without apartner, two variables that also influence lifetime reproductivesuccess. Natal and breeding dispersal have a major impact on gene flowand population structure. We examined the consequences of nataldispersal on the reproductive success (proportion of pairs rearingchicks) of colonial-breeding Thick-billed murres (Uria lomvia).Reproductive success increased with distance dispersed for thefirst and second breeding attempt. The increase in breedingsuccess leveled off at natal dispersal distances above 7 m.Our results were consistent with the idea that the relationshipbetween dispersal and reproductive success is caused by siteavailability and mate choice as birds willing to disperse fartherhad a greater choice of potential sites and mates. This hypothesiswas supported by the fact that birds dispersing farther weremore likely to pair with an experienced breeder, which increasesthe likelihood of breeding success for young breeders. Explanationsfor increasing breeding success with increased dispersal basedon inbreeding effects were unlikely because most breeding failureswere caused by egg loss rather than infertility or nestlingdeath. However, we could not explain why >50% of birds returnwithin 3 m of the natal site, despite having an up to 50% lowerreproductive success than birds dispersing 7 m or more.  相似文献

Individuals of a population may vary along a pace‐of‐life syndrome from highly fecund, short‐lived, bold, dispersive “fast” types at one end of the spectrum to less fecund, long‐lived, shy, plastic “slow” types at the other end. Risk‐taking behavior might mediate the underlying life history trade‐off, but empirical evidence supporting this hypothesis is still ambiguous. Using experimentally created populations of common voles (Microtus arvalis)—a species with distinct seasonal life history trajectories—we aimed to test whether individual differences in boldness behavior covary with risk taking, space use, and fitness. We quantified risk taking, space use (via automated tracking), survival, and reproductive success (via genetic parentage analysis) in 8 to 14 experimental, mixed‐sex populations of 113 common voles of known boldness type in large grassland enclosures over a significant part of their adult life span and two reproductive events. Populations were assorted to contain extreme boldness types (bold or shy) of both sexes. Bolder individuals took more risks than shyer ones, which did not affect survival. Bolder males but not females produced more offspring than shy conspecifics. Daily home range and core area sizes, based on 95% and 50% Kernel density estimates (20 ± 10 per individual, n = 54 individuals), were highly repeatable over time. Individual space use unfolded differently for sex‐boldness type combinations over the course of the experiment. While day ranges decreased for shy females, they increased for bold females and all males. Space use trajectories may, hence, indicate differences in coping styles when confronted with a novel social and physical environment. Thus, interindividual differences in boldness predict risk taking under near‐natural conditions and have consequences for fitness in males, which have a higher reproductive potential than females. Given extreme inter‐ and intra‐annual fluctuations in population density in the study species and its short life span, density‐dependent fluctuating selection operating differently on the sexes might maintain (co)variation in boldness, risk taking, and pace‐of‐life.  相似文献

Explaining variation in individual fitness is a key goal in evolutionary biology. Recently, telomeres, repeating DNA sequences capping chromosome ends, have gained attention as a biomarker for body state, physiological costs, and senescence. Existing research has provided mixed evidence for whether telomere length correlates with fitness, including survival and reproductive output. Moreover, few studies have examined how the rate of change in telomere length correlates with fitness in wild populations. Here, we intensively monitored an insular population of house sparrows, and collected longitudinal telomere and life history data (16 years, 1225 individuals). We tested whether telomere length and its rate of change predict fitness measures, namely survival, lifespan and annual and lifetime reproductive effort and success. Telomere length positively predicted short-term survival, independent of age, but did not predict lifespan, suggesting either a diminishing telomere length—survival correlation with age or other extrinsic factors of mortality. The positive association of telomere length with survival translated into reproductive benefits, as birds with longer telomeres produced more genetic recruits, hatchlings and reared more fledglings over their lifetime. In contrast, there was no association between telomere dynamics and annual reproductive output, suggesting telomere dynamics might not reflect the costs of reproduction in this population, potentially masked by variation in individual quality. The rate of change of telomere length did not correlate with neither lifespan nor lifetime reproductive success. Our results provide further evidence that telomere length correlates with fitness, and contribute to our understanding of the selection on, and evolution of, telomere dynamics.  相似文献

配对相容性(mate compatibility)常用于解释动物为何具有不同的配偶选择倾向及繁殖成功率, 涉及两性间基因、性状等的相互作用, 具体表现为配偶之间的基因、形态、行为相容性, 且直接或间接影响动物的繁殖。其中, 行为相容性受到越来越广泛的关注与研究, 主要原因是其对动物个性差异的维持与进化、物种适应环境变化的能力等均有深远影响, 但国内尚缺乏相关研究。本文主要基于以往的代表性研究结果, 对配对相容性的研究历史、定义、内容及其对动物繁殖的影响进行了简单总结和梳理, 并着重阐述了配偶行为相容性的研究进展、在进化与保护生物学等领域的研究潜力, 体现了其在动物濒危机制、种群数量恢复与维持等方面的重要意义, 有助于通过对旗舰种、伞护种的保护带动对区域内整个生态系统功能和生物多样性的保护。同时, 我们对动物配偶行为相容性未来的研究方向进行了展望, 提出工具技术革新、多学科融合以及更合理全面的实验设计可推动该领域研究在我国的发展和应用。  相似文献

Age at first (α) and last (ω) breeding are important life‐history traits; however, the direction and strength of selection detected on traits may vary depending on the fitness measure used. We provide the first estimates of lifetime breeding success (LBS) and λind (the population growth rate of an individual) of European badgers Meles meles, by genotyping 915 individuals, sampled over 18 years, for 22 microsatellites. Males are slightly larger than females, and the opportunity for selection was slightly greater for males, as predicted. λind and LBS both performed well in predicting the number of grand‐offspring, and both detected selection for a late ω, until the age of eight. Differential selection (Sα) for an early α, however, was only detected using LBS, not with λind. In declining populations (λind < 1) selection favours reproduction later in life, whereas early reproduction is selected in increasing populations (λind > 1). As 41% of badgers were assigned only one offspring (λind < 1), whereas 40% were assigned more than two (λind > 1), this cancelled out Sα measured by λind.  相似文献

The vast majority of species are excluded from human-dominatedlandscapes, but some species persist and appear to thrive, despitefacing challenges they would not encounter in less disturbedhabitat. Corticosteroid (cort) secretion may play a significantrole in enabling an animal to cope with urban breeding habitatbecause it helps mediate physiological and behavioral responsesto environmental challenges. Here we present tests of 3 hypothesesrelating to cort secretion in urban animals: 1) environmentalchallenges vary between urban and rural habitat, as reflectedin differing levels of cort secretion in animals breeding inthese habitat types, 2) there are fitness correlates associatedwith variation in cort levels within populations, and 3) parasiteload is one of the mechanistic links between variation in cortlevels and reproductive success. Male white-crowned sparrows(Zonotrichia leucophrys) in urban habitat had significantlyhigher baseline corticosterone levels than males in rural habitat,whereas female Z. leucophrys' hormone levels did not differbetween the 2 habitat types. To assess the fitness correlatesof variation in hormone levels, we monitored seasonal reproductivesuccess in one urban population and found that baseline corticosteronelevels were predictive of female, but not male, reproductivesuccess: females with higher corticosterone fledged fewer offspring.Data do not suggest a direct relationship between corticosteronelevels and fitness and instead indicate an indirect relationshipbetween hormone secretion, territory quality, body condition,and reproductive success. Females with blood parasites had lowerheterophil:lymphocyte ratios, lower body condition scores, fewermates, and fledged fewer offspring than females without parasites.In contrast, parasites did not negatively affect reproductivesuccess in males but were associated with reduced body condition.Corticosterone levels did not differ between birds with andwithout parasites. In tests of all 3 of our hypotheses, we foundsex-specific effects, highlighting the importance of consideringsex in investigation of physiological responses to disturbance.  相似文献

We isolated and characterized 10 polymorphic microsatellite loci from the azure damselfly Coenagrion puella (Zygoptera; Coenagrionidae) as part of a study assessing reproductive success and genetic structure in an isolated population of this species. Levels of genetic diversity were assessed in 50 individuals collected from Queen Elizabeth Country Park, Hampshire, UK. The number of alleles per microsatellite loci ranged from three to 22 and the observed and expected heterozygosities varied between 0.26 and 0.84 and between 0.23 and 0.91, respectively. Two loci showed significant (P < 0.05) heterozygote deficits, likely because of null (non‐amplifying) alleles; one pair of loci was in linkage disequilibrium.  相似文献

Identifying correlations among behaviors is important for understandinghow selection shapes the phenotype. Correlated behaviors canindicate constraints on the evolution of behavioral plasticityor may reflect selection for functional integration among behaviors.Obligate cavity-nesting birds provide an opportunity to examinethese correlations because males must defend limited nest cavitieswhile also competing for mating opportunities and providingparental care. Here, I investigated the role of behavioral correlationsin producing a counterintuitive relationship between nest defenseand reproductive success in western bluebirds (Sialia mexicana)such that males that defended their nests most intensely hadthe lowest reproductive success, measured as the number of withinand extrapair offspring that fledged. By experimentally measuringaggression across contexts, I show that this cost of nest defensewas due to the correlated expression of aggression across thecontexts of nest defense and male–male competition coupledwith a trade-off between male–male aggression and parentalcare. In particular, more aggressive males provisioned theirfemales less during incubation and this led to disrupted incubationpatterns and fewer fledged offspring. However, aggressive malesdid not benefit from avoiding parental investment by gainingextrapair fertilizations, and thus, it is unclear how high levelsof aggression are maintained in this population despite apparentcosts. These results suggest that there are constraints to theevolution of plasticity in aggression and emphasize the importanceof considering the integrated behavioral phenotype to understandhow variation in behavior is linked to fitness.  相似文献

Traits that are correlated with mating success are likely tobe subject to sexual selection. In lekking species, a male'smating success can be estimated as the number of females thathe copulates with. Earlier reviews of sexual selection in lekkingspecies have been inconclusive, suggesting that different traitsmay be important in different species. To obtain a more completeunderstanding of the outcome of sexual selection in this matingsystem, we performed a meta-analysis in which we combined theresults from different studies across a wide variety of taxa.Our aim was to synthesize available information about correlatesof male mating success in lekking species. We found that behavioraltraits such as male display activit aggression rate, and lekattendance were positively correlated with male mating success.Further, territory position was negatively correlated with malemating success, such that males with territories close to thegeometric center of the leks had higher mating success thanother males. The size of "extravagant" traits, such as birdstails and ungulate antlers, and age were positively correlatedwith male mating success. Male morphology (measure of body size)and territory size showed small effects on male mating success.Our results confirm some of the suggestions put forward by earlierreviews but add more rigor to the condusions drawn. Part ofthe variation across studies still remain unaccounted for. Furtherstudies are needed to perform proper meta-analyses that cantake factors like phylogeny and sexual dimorphism into account.  相似文献

The relationships among the members of a population can be visualized using individual networks, where each individual is a node connected to each other by means of links describing the interactions. The centrality of a given node captures its importance within the network. We hypothesize that in mutualistic networks, the centrality of a node should benefit its fitness. We test this idea studying eight individual-based networks originated from the interaction between Erysimum mediohispanicum and its flower visitors. In these networks, each plant was considered a node and was connected to conspecifics sharing flower visitors. Centrality indicates how well connected is a given E. mediohispanicum individual with the rest of the co-occurring conspecifics because of sharing flower visitors. The centrality was estimated by three network metrics: betweenness, closeness and degree. The complex relationship between centrality, phenotype and fitness was explored by structural equation modelling. We found that the centrality of a plant was related to its fitness, with plants occupying central positions having higher fitness than those occupying peripheral positions. The structural equation models (SEMs) indicated that the centrality effect on fitness was not merely an effect of the abundance of visits and the species richness of visitors. Centrality has an effect even when simultaneously accounting for these predictors. The SEMs also indicated that the centrality effect on fitness was because of the specific phenotype of each plant, with attractive plants occupying central positions in networks, in relation to the distribution of conspecific phenotypes. This finding suggests that centrality, owing to its dependence on social interactions, may be an appropriate surrogate for the interacting phenotype of individuals.  相似文献

We investigated the consequences of cannibalism for some correlatesof fitness in the fall armyworm, Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae).The benefits gained by cannibals were ascertained by comparing survival,development rate, and pupal weight of larvae that had the opportunityto cannibalize with those that did not, at two levels of food availability.Larvae in the cannibalism treatments were provided with a conspecificone instar younger than themselves on five dates throughoutlarval development. Cannibalism was frequent; given the opportunityall larvae predated at least one younger conspecific. The frequencyof cannibalism was not affected by the sex of the cannibal orby the availability of alternative food. However, cannibalssuffered a significant reduction in survival at both high andlow food availability. Furthermore, cannibals had a lower pupal weightin the high food treatment and a reduced development rate inthe low food treatment. The only detectable fitness benefitassociated with cannibalism was a positive correlation betweenthe number of victims consumed and development rate under conditionsof low food availability. On balance, cannibalism appears tobe costly; alternative explanations for its occurrence in thisspecies are discussed.  相似文献

1. Reproductive asynchrony, where individuals in a population are short-lived relative to the population-level reproductive period, has been identified recently as a theoretical mechanism of the Allee effect that could operate in diverse plant and insect species. The degree to which this effect impinges on the growth potential of natural populations is not yet well understood. 2. Building on previous models of reproductive timing, we develop a general framework that allows a detailed, quantitative examination of the reproductive potential lost to asynchrony in small natural populations. 3. Our framework includes a range of biologically plausible submodels that allow details of mating biology of different species to be incorporated into the basic reproductive timing model. 4. We tailor the parameter estimation methods of the full model (basic model plus mating biology submodels) to take full advantage of data from detailed field studies of two species of Parnassius butterflies whose mating status may be assessed easily in the field. 5. We demonstrate that for both species, a substantial portion of the female population (6.5-18.6%) is expected to die unmated. These analyses provide the first direct, quantitative evidence of female reproductive failure due to asynchrony in small natural populations, and suggest that reproductive asynchrony exerts a strong and largely unappreciated influence on the population dynamics of these butterflies and other species with similarly asynchronous reproductive phenology.  相似文献

Zusammenfassung Junge Graukraniche haben einen weniger guten Jagderfolg bzw. eine geringere Rate bei der Nahrungsaufnahme als Altvögel. Dieses Defizit sollte durch die elterliche Investition bei der Jungenaufzucht kompensiert werden. Untersuchungen zum Zeitbudget und zum Aufwand aus dem Brutgebiet fehlen bisher. Mit Hilfe markierter Jungkraniche (Farbringe, Sender) wurde das Verhalten der Eltern und ihrer Nachkommen erfasst, um die Investitionen in Beziehung zum Reproduktionserfolg zu analysieren. Die Eltern sicherten mit 39,6% fast viermal so häufig wie Altvögel ohne Junge (Übersommerer). Bei Paaren mit zwei Nachkommen waren diese Aufwendungen höher als bei Paaren mit nur einem Jungvogel. Das Weibchen profitierte vom verstärkten Sichern des Männchens (Männchen: durchschnittlich 43,9%, Weibchen 35,3%) und konnte so vermutlich schneller seine Investition in die Gelegeproduktion ausgleichen. Die Revierverteidigung bzw. Feindabwehr übernahmen meist die Männchen. Die Beteiligung des Männchens förderte den Aufzuchterfolg, der auf zwei Junge begrenzt ist. Die Jungen profitierten von den Leistungen ihrer Eltern. Sie konnten mit geringem Sicherungsaufwand (11,9%) Nahrung suchen (67,7%, Eltern 42,8%) und so ihre geringere Aufnahmerate kompensieren. 77,9% der Jungkraniche überlebten vom Zeitpunkt des Markierens im Juni bis zum Abzug ins Überwinterungsgebiet im Oktober/November (84% der Einzeljungen und 75% bei Familien mit zwei Nachkommen).Junge Kraniche müssen einen wesentlichen Teil des Tages Nahrung aufnehmen, um den Energiebedarf für ein schnelles Wachstum sicherzustellen. Bei einer negativen Energiebilanz aufgrund zu vieler Störreize können die Erfolge bei der Jungenaufzucht sinken. Im Rahmen der Landschaftsplanung ist vor allem in Räumen mit einer hohen Siedlungsdichte des Kranichs auf eine stärkere Bebauung (z. B. mit Windkraftanlagen) oder Zerschneidung durch weitere Verkehrswege und Energieleitungen zu verzichten.
Behaviour of Crane (Grus grus) families in their breeding territories in Northeast Germany: parental care and investment
Summary Juveniles and immature birds normally have less foraging ability and a lower food intake rate than adults. This — it has been presumed — is compensated for by parental care and investment during juvenile development. Studies of time budgets and parental investment of Common Cranes were carried out in the years 1995 to 1999 in Northeast Germany. Having first marked young Cranes (colour rings, radio transmitters), we analysed the behaviour of parents and offspring to correlate this with reproductive success. Parents with young (39.6%) were four times more vigilant than non-breeders. The investment of pairs with two young was significantly (p<0.001) higher than in pairs with only one young. Females profited from the high vigilance rate of their males (males mean 43.9%, females 35.3%) and were thus able probably to compensate for their investment in the clutch faster because of higher food intake. Defence of the territory against other cranes and defence against predators were tasks mostly undertaken by males. If the males participated in the rearing of the young, the pair were able to rear two juveniles to fleding.The young profited from parental care. They were able to feed most of the time (67.7%) with lower vigilance costs (11.9%; 27.7% less than parents), and thus possibly compensated for their lower feeding success. Rearing of two young, however, must be the upper limit of possible investment of adults. So far there has been no evidence of families with three grown-up young in a stopover region or on the wintering grounds. The survival of juveniles from the date of ringing in June up to the migration to the wintering sites in mid-November amounts to 77.9%, with 84% for families with one young and 75% for those with two young. Accordingly the reproductive success was higher for pairs with two young (1.32 juv./pair) than with one young (0.84 juv/pair).The long-term survival of the population in a man-made landscape is only possible with an appropriate reproductive success. The offspring of crane families have to feed throughout the major part of the day in order to gain their energy for the high metabolic rate during growth. With a negative energy balance because of too much disturbance, the reproductive success will decrease. Future landscape planning should avoid new traffic structures, buildings (e.g. wind turbines) or power lines at least in areas of high crane density.
