This study examines species-specific distributions of preimaginal black flies (Diptera: Simuliidae) over two large spatial
scales (within and across ecoregions) and two seasons (spring and summer). The study area in the western two-thirds of South
Carolina, United States, was divided into three ecoregions (Mountains, Piedmont, Sandhills). The mean correct classification
of species distributions among stream sites was 81.3%. Predictability of species distributions varied with spatial scale,
location, and time. Species occurrence was not independent of ecoregion; distributions of 12 of the 13 species examined at
this scale were predictable on the basis of changes in water column (temperature, percentage dissolved oxygen) and channel
characters (velocity, streambed-particle size). However, with the exception of the Mountains during the summer, predicting
species distributions within ecoregions was far less successful than predicting distributions across these regions; predictability
was particularly poor in the Sandhills. Seasonal effects on predictability were most pronounced in the Mountains. As stream
sites became more homogeneous, predictive capability declined. Species-level identifications, aided by cytogenetic techniques,
were of paramount importance in recognizing the association between species distributions and stream conditions, emphasizing
that considerable ecological information is lost when species are not considered. This study emphasizes the critical role
of taxonomic resolution, linked with spatial and temporal scale of observation, in elucidating patterns of species assemblages.
It also demonstrates that predictability of species distributions at a fixed scale can vary with geographic location and time.

The characterization of the stoichiometric and site-affinity distributions for the reaction of hemoglobin with O(2) and CO is presented as an example of a multivalent receptor system which exhibits positive site-site interactions. The distributions of stoichiometric constants, T(i)(K(i))'s, are obtained assuming that the distribution of site constants, N(k), is known. The importance of these distributions is that they can be directly related to quantities measured experimentally and that they represent affinity distributions for each ligation step. In hemoglobin, positive site-site interactions generate both stoichiometric and site-affinity distributions with complex and previously unrecognized multimodal patterns that are very different from the theoretical distributions obtained in the absence of interactions. These distributions are related to the generation of heterogeneity during the ligand binding process. Experimental binding data show that these complex distributions can be related to the physiological functions of uptake, transport, and release of gaseous ligands by hemoglobin. 相似文献

A method to test the Markov nature of ion channel gating is proposed. It makes use of singly and doubly conditional distributions. The application of this method to recordings from single BK channels provides evidence that at least two states of the underlying kinetic scheme are left at a constant rate. Moreover, the probabilities, when leaving a state, of reaching another given state are shown to be constant for all the states of the system.

The stochastic nature of high-throughput screening (HTS) data indicates that information may be gleaned by applying statistical methods to HTS data. A foundation of parametric statistics is the study and elucidation of population distributions, which can be modeled using modern spreadsheet software. The methods and results described here use fundamental concepts of statistical population distributions analyzed using a spreadsheet to provide tools in a developing armamentarium for extracting information from HTS data. Specific examples using two HTS kinase assays are analyzed. The analyses use normal and gamma distributions, which combine to form mixture distributions. HTS data were found to be described well using such mixture distributions, and deconvolution of the mixtures to the constituent gamma and normal parts provided insight into how the assays performed. In particular, the proportion of hits confirmed was predicted from the original HTS data and used to assess screening assay performance. The analyses also provide a method for determining how hit thresholds--values used to separate active from inactive compounds--affect the proportion of compounds verified as active and how the threshold can be chosen to optimize the selection process. 相似文献

Assemblages of macroalgal species present in the upper reaches of estuaries were compared using published species lists for the North Atlantic, covering a north-south gradient in Europe from Iceland to northern Spain, and in North America between the St. Lawrence and Virginia. Patterns were sought using cluster analysis and ordination. Three groupings of estuaries were noted: Icelandic, mainland European and American. There was a slight trend of increase in the ratio of red to brown algae with decreasing latitude in Europe, though not as marked as for open coastal algae. This might be associated with the effect of temperature on salinity tolerance. Despite this biogeographic trend, some of the commonest species appear to be widely spread through estuaries, possibly including southern Atlantic and Pacific locations. Polymorphism in adult colour pattern of Nezara viridula is determined on the genetic basis. The basic colour patterns of adult are classified into four types, i. e. G, O, R and F. No appreciable differences between these types were observed in respect to various physiological traits of nymphs and adults, except that type G seems to be superior in reproductive ability but to be inferior in ability of surviving winters at least to types R and F. Inter-generation changes in percentage frequency of G type were examined from 1959 to 1967 covering more than 30 generations. Percentage frequencies of G types prior to the severe winter of 1962–3 fluctuated greatly around a mean of 87.9%, while they did to a lesser extent than before with a mean of 85.0% after the winter. Unexpected high percentages of G type were recorded frequently in summer generations, viz. 1st and 2nd. On the other hand, the relative frequencies of G and O types decreased after hibernation in contrast to the increases in those of F and R. This sort of changes in genetic composition related to the winter of 1962–3 was observed in several populations segregated from each other. This seasonal alternation of selective activity in the environments is considered to be responsible for retention of the polymorphism. Alternative possible causes, i. e. difference in habitat preference, non-random mating and selective predation by predators among polymorphs, may safely be rejected as irrelevant to the mechanism in maintaining polymorphism. The polymorphism of this insect seems to be in a transient state rather than balanced one contributing little to population regulation, but the persistence of N. viridula in the periphery range may be assisted by retention of the polymorphism. 相似文献

An accurate protein crystallographic structure determination requires a knowledge of the solvent contribution to the diffraction pattern. As resolutions improve, research groups are reporting coordinates of large numbers of water molecules. We examine the accuracy of these coordinates by presenting radial distributions of water—water distances from refinements at different stages and interpreting them in terms of preferred hydrogen-bonding distances and problems in solvent electron density map interpretation. Marked differences between the distributions suggest that wide variations exist in the water molecule selection and refinement criteria employed by different research groups which mask possible real differences in solvent structure. 相似文献

Trawl samples of demersal fish populations within the Gulf of Nicoya, Costa Rica were conducted during February and July, 1979 and April, 1980 in an attempt to define basic abundance, diversity and distributional patterns. Seventeen day and three night samples produced 6 441 fishes of 107 species during the February cruise. Twenty day and two night samples produced 9 220 individuals of 131 species during the July cruise. Twenty day samples produced 14 151 individuals representing 125 species taken during the April cruise. A total of 214 species were collected during this study.The Gulf may be divided into three zones on the basis of the physical characteristics of the stations (water temperature, dissolved oxygen, salinity, depth and distance from the mouth of the Gulf). Few changes in the position of these zones occurred during the study period indicating a relatively stable estuarine configuration from a biological perspective.The Gulf of Nicoya area is under the influence of a wet and a dry season. No significant seasonal changes in the number, biomass, percent occurrence, diversity of partitioning by size class of fishes were observed.Two major types of fish distributional patterns were observed. Several species were ubiquitous and were found throughout the Gulf in varying abundances. Other species were restricted to either the upper or lower Gulf. Dominant groups in the upper Gulf include the sciaenids, sea catfishes (Ariidae) and flatfishes (Soleidae, Cynoglossidae andSyacium ovale). These fishes tend to inhabit the warmer, shallower, less saline waters of the upper Gulf. Flounders (bothidae), gobies (Bollmannia spp.), morays and congers (Hildebrandia nitens, Priodonophus equatorialis andMuraenesox coniceps) and several other species dominated the deeper, cooler, more saline lower Gulf. 相似文献

Summary Chinese hamster ovary (CHO) cells maintained in continuous culture for 3 to 5 months may undergo subtle changes in drug sensitivity response, growth kinetics, plating efficiencies, et cetera. Our studies done independently in two different laboratories, using flow cytometry, indicate that the DNA histogram patterns change at about 11 wk, from populations with an approximate diploid DNA content to populations also composed of triploid and tetraploid cells. Chromosome counts also change from distributions of 21 to 22 to populations of cells having 21 to 22, 34, to 35 and 44 to 46 chromosomes. These alterations occur earlier (at 8 to 9 wk) in cell populations previously treated with anticancer drugs. The research was supported by NIH Grant DHEW 5 RO1 CA 15397 and funds from Upjohn Co. Many image processing methods applied to magnetic resonance (MR) images directly or indirectly rely on prior knowledge of the statistical data distribution that characterizes the MR data. Also, data distributions are key in many parameter estimation problems and strongly relate to the accuracy and precision with which parameters can be estimated. This review paper provides an overview of the various distributions that occur when dealing with MR data, considering both single-coil and multiple-coil acquisition systems. The paper also summarizes how knowledge of the MR data distributions can be used to construct optimal parameter estimators and answers the question as to what precision may be achieved ultimately from a particular MR image. 相似文献

Many statistics are available to compare distributions. Some are limited to nominal data while others, such as skew, Kullback-Leibler, Kolmogorov-Smirnov and the Gini coefficient, are useful for providing information about ordered distributions. While many of these tests are useful for determining properties of data in histograms, there has not been a test until now that allows for the detection of differences between distributions, describes the difference and is sensitive to the location of the departures. Such a test could be critical for comparing pre-and post-event distributions, such as a change in the distribution of biomass due to fire, for example, or for comparing data from different locations, such as soil size distributions, and even for evaluating economic disparity or examining differences in age demographics. We present a new statistic, a departure index, which allows a test distribution to be compared with any reference distribution. The resulting index contains information about the location, magnitude and direction of departure from the reference distribution to the test distribution. The departure index in turn provides a standardized response range that allows for a comparison of results from different analyses. A case study of actual fire data demonstrates the sensitivity and range of the test. 相似文献

Two sets of sufficient conditions are given for convergence to stationary distributions, for some general models of two species competing in a randomly varying environment. The models are nonlinear stochastic difference equations which define Markov chains. One set of sufficient conditions involves strong continuity and -irreducibility of the transition probability for the chain. The second set has a much weaker irreducibility condition, but is only applicable to monotonic models. The results are applied to a stochastic two-species Ricker model, and to Chesson's lottery model with vacant space, to illustrate how the assumptions can be checked in specific models. 相似文献

Salvelinus leucomaenis (white-spotted charr) and S. malma (Dolly Varden) are distributed throughout Hokkaido Island, Japan, but sites where they occur in sympatry are rare. In general, S. malma inhabit upstream reaches and S. leucomaenis extend downstream to the ocean. Factors influencing their distribution were analyzed at four spatial scales ranging from the whole island to individual stream pools. At the island scale, S. leucomaenis were found in the warmer south-west region and at lower altitudes elsewhere, whereas S. malma were found in the colder north-east and at higher altitudes. At a regional scale, the downstream limit of S. malma and upstream limit of S. leucomaenis shifted to lower altitude from south-west to north-east across the island, coincident with the decrease in temperature. Further analysis showed that transition points from S. leucomaenis or sympatry to S. malma in individual watersheds were closely related to an index of cumulative mean monthly temperatures exceeding 5°C. However, at the scale of a single watershed, the transition occurred at different altitudes, gradients, and temperatures in two tributaries, apparently because stream discharge, habitat, and disturbances from floods interacted with these abiotic factors to limit distribution. The two charr species developed interspecific dominance hierarchies in individual pools, and there was strong complementary density compensation among stream pools that could be explained by interspecific competition but not by differences in habitat. However, patterns at watershed and regional scales suggested that interspecific competition interacts with temperature in complex ways. We conclude that the importance of various abiotic and biotic factors in shaping Hokkaido charr distributions depends on the scale at which they are viewed. 相似文献

A generalised model of the life cycle of a house dust mite, which can be tailored to any particular species of domestic mite,
is presented. The model takes into account the effects of hygrothermal conditions on each life cycle phase. It is used in
a computer simulation program, called POPMITE, which, by incorporating a population age structure, is able to predict population
dynamics. The POPMITE simulation is adapted to the Dermatophagoides pteronyssinus (Acari: Pyroglyphidae) (DP) mite using published data on the egg development period, total development period, adult longevity,
mortality during egg development, mortality during juvenile development, and fecundity of individual DP mites held at a range
of constant hygrothermal conditions. An example is given which illustrates how the model functions under constant hygrothermal
conditions. A preliminary validation of POPMITE is made by a comparison of the POPMITE predictions with published measurements
of population growth of DP mites held at a range constant hygrothermal conditions for 21 days. The POPMITE simulation is used
to provide predictions of population growth or decline for a wide range of constant relative humidity and temperature combinations
for 30 and 60 days. The adaptation of the model to correctly take account of fluctuating hygrothermal conditions is discussed. 相似文献

The processes underlying parasitoid community structure are little known. Stochastic niche-apportionment models provide one route to underlying assemblage rules in this and other groups. Previous work has applied this approach to parasitoids found on single host species in single populations. However, parasitoid communities are known to extend across multiple hosts and scales. The patterns of relative abundances generated by five niche-apportionment models were compared to those observed in assemblages of two sub-families of the Ichneumonidae, the Diplazontinae and Pimplinae, at landscape and patch scales, Yorkshire, UK. Three of the five models produced patterns that were significantly different to the observed pattern for all taxonomic levels at both spatial scales. The Diplazontinae fit the random fraction (RF) model at the landscape scale in broadleaved woods. This suggests that hierarchical structuring and biotic interactions may play a role in the structuring of Diplazontinae assemblages at this scale. In contrast the Pimplinae fit the RF model only at the patch scale and only at one site. However, the Pimplini tribe (all chiefly parasitoids of Lepidoptera) fit the random assortment (RA) model at both the landscape and the patch scales, whilst the Ephialtini tribe (wide range of hosts) fit no model at either scale. The ecological interpretation of the RA model suggests that the Pimplini tribe is an unsaturated assemblage, where some of the total available resources are unused. Our results show, through the fit of mechanistic niche-apportionment models, that the processes that may structure ichneumonid parasitoid assemblages are not consistent across taxa and spatial scales. 相似文献

The short-term relationships between the spatial distributions of phytoplankton and the environmental conditions of Esthwaite Water, a small eutrophic lake in the English Lake District, UK, were examined using a hydrodynamic model. Spatial distributions of phytoplankton were simulated on two occasions the first, when the population was dominated by dinoflagellates; and the second, when the population was dominated by cyanobacteria.Vertical motility of the dinoflagellate Ceratium hirundinellaand buoyancy of the cyanobacteria Microcystis ssprm.were estimated as functions of irradiance. Water velocity fields were estimated through solving the 3-D Navier–Stokes equations on a finite-volume, unstructured non-orthogonal grid. Simulated circulation patterns of water and phytoplankton were similar to those obtained through field observations. Near-surface drift currents were initiated by wind stress, which then generated return currents along the seasonal thermocline. Aggregations of motile Ceratiumthat existed near the thermocline were pushed upwind by the deep return currents and accumulated at upwelling areas. In contrast, near-surface aggregations of Microcystiswere pushed downwind by the surface currents and accumulated at downwelling areas. Horizontal and vertical phytoplankton distributions resulted from the interaction between the vertical motility of the phytoplankton (dependent upon the light environment) and the velocity vectors at the depths at which the phytoplankton accumulated (dependent upon wind stress and morphometry). We consider a population of cells growing and dividing steadily without mortality, so that the total cell population is increasing, but the proportion of cells in any size class remains constant. The cell division process is non-deterministic in the sense that both the size at which a cell divides, and the proportions into which it divides, are described by probability density functions. We derive expressions for the steady size/birth-size distribution (and the corresponding size/age distribution) in terms of the cell birth-size distribution, in the particular case of one-dimensional growth in plant organs, where the relative growth rate is the same for all cells but may vary with time. This birth-size distribution is shown to be the principal eigenfunction of a Fredholm integral operator. Some special cases of the cell birth-size distribution are then solved using analytical techniques, and in more realistic examples, the eigen-function is found using a simple, generally applicable numerical iteration. 相似文献

The shallow (1.5 m) Pulicat Lagoon in India supports a variety of migratory birds (125 species), especially flamingos and storks. Flamingo populations in this area are dominated by Phoenicopterus roseuis, and they are densely distributed in shallow areas and fringes of the lake where the water level is below 40 cm. Eighteen flamingo groups are distributed around the lagoon with ~750 individuals per group. Flamingo populations are greatest in places where fish, algal, and benthic faunal biomass are highest. Physiological adaptations and morphology of flamingo are important criteria for selecting feeding locations. 相似文献
