Summary A general model of arthropod predator-prey systems incorporating age structure in the predator is employed to study the role of functional and numerical responses on stability and the paradox of enrichment. The destabilizing effect of age structure leads to both qualitatively and quantitatively new results for an environment which has an infinite prey carrying capacity, including a lower bound to prey density for a stable equilibrium, a feature not present in models without age structure. When applied to an environment with finite prey carrying capacity, the effect of age structure is to reinforce the arguments implicit to the paradox of enrichment originally developed for traditional models lacking age structure.  相似文献

Energy-based plant-herbivore models produce the "paradox of enrichment," a destabilizing influence of enrichment on population dynamics. Because many plants change their carbon : nutrient stoichiometry in response to the light : nutrient supply ratio, enrichment with light can cause a mismatch between the elemental compositions of plants and their herbivores. Herbivore growth rates may then decrease with increased light supply, which is termed the "paradox of energy enrichment." I present a stoichiometric phytoplankton-grazer model that accounts for the dynamical vertical light gradient and explore how algal and grazer densities, mineral nutrient concentration, algal nutrient stoichiometry, and system stability respond to enrichment with light (through changes in irradiance, background turbidity, and water column depth) versus enrichment with nutrients. Parameterized for Daphnia, the model produces several "unusual" phenomena: multiple equilibria (with grazers extinct in spite of high algal biomass at one equilibrium), inconsistent light enrichment effects on stability (light enrichment first destabilizes and then stabilizes), and the paradox of energy enrichment. These phenomena are restricted to the low end of realistic nutrient supplies except in very shallow systems, where high sedimentation rates effectively deplete the water column of nutrients. At higher nutrient supplies, light enrichment produces the classical paradox of enrichment, leading first to an increase in grazers at a stable equilibrium and then to algae-grazer oscillations.  相似文献

In this paper, we consider an interaction of prey and predator species where prey species have the ability of group defence. Thresholds, equilibria and stabilities are determined for the system of ordinary differential equations. Taking carrying capacity as a bifurcation parameter, it is shown that a Hopf bifurcation can occur implying that if the carrying capacity is made sufficiently large by enrichment of the environment, the model predicts the eventual extinction of the predator providing strong support for the so-called ‘paradox of enrichment’.  相似文献

Periphyton is a key component of the Everglades ecosystems. It is a major primary producer, providing food and habitat for a variety of organisms, contributing material to the surface soil, and regulating water chemistry. Periphyton is sensitive to the phosphorus (P) supply and P enrichment has caused dramatic changes in the native Everglades periphyton assemblages. Periphyton also affects P availability by removing P from the water column and depositing a refractory portion into sediment. A quantitative understanding of the response of periphyton assemblages to P supply and its effects on P cycling could provide critical supports to decision making in the conservation and restoration of the Everglades. We constructed a model to examine the interaction between periphyton and P dynamics. The model contains two differential equations: P uptake and periphyton growth are assumed to follow the Monod equation and are limited by a modified logistic equation. Equilibrium and stability analyses suggest that P loading is the driving force and determines the system behavior. The position and number of steady states and the stability also depend upon the rate of sloughing, through which periphyton deposits refractory P into sediment. Multiple equilibria may exist, with two stable equilibria separated by an unstable equilibrium. Due to nonlinear interplay of periphyton and P in this model, catastrophe and hysteresis are likely to occur.  相似文献

1. This study involves an examination of two- and three-trophic-level food chains at two temperatures (18 and 25 °C) in order to determine how the addition of a carnivore to a predator–prey system can alter the dynamics of populations and how this effect may be temperature mediated. The system consisted of phytoplankton, Daphnia pulex and the flatworm Mesostoma ehrenbergii .
2. Although the plant–herbivore system is inherently unstable at 25 °C, the addition of the carnivore led to a further destabilization of the Daphnia –algal dynamics at the higher temperature. No destabilization effect of the carnivore was noted at 18 °C. At the lower temperature, all populations persisted and the carnivore induced changes only in the age structure of the Daphnia populations rather than in overall biomass.
3. The differential effects of the carnivore at two temperatures can be attributed to shifts in the life history, physiological rates and the reproductive strategy employed by Mesostoma .
4. Previous theoretical work has predicted that the addition of a third trophic level to an unstable predator–prey system should stabilize dynamics. Our results indicate that the effect of a carnivore on plant–herbivore dynamics can be significantly affected by ambient temperature.  相似文献

We analyze a general time-discrete mathematical model of single species population dynamics with the intraspecific density effect and the harvesting/thinning effect. We harvest a portion of the population at a moment in each year. We investigate the condition under which the harvesting/thinning causes an eventual increase of its population at the equilibrium, and show that such a paradoxical increase could occur for the discrete single species population dynamics with a large family of density effect functions. Some typical models are analyzed in detail according to the possibility of the paradox emergence. Our result implies that the contest competition would never cause the paradox, while the scramble competition would be likely to cause it.  相似文献

The Bicoid morphogen is amongst the earliest triggers of differential spatial pattern of gene expression and subsequent cell fate determination in the embryonic development of Drosophila. This maternally deposited morphogen is thought to diffuse in the embryo, establishing a concentration gradient which is sensed by downstream genes. In most model based analyses of this process, the translation of the bicoid mRNA is thought to take place at a fixed rate from the anterior pole of the embryo and a supply of the resulting protein at a constant rate is assumed. Is this process of morphogen generation a passive one as assumed in the modelling literature so far, or would available data support an alternate hypothesis that the stability of the mRNA is regulated by active processes? We introduce a model in which the stability of the maternal mRNA is regulated by being held constant for a length of time, followed by rapid degradation. With this more realistic model of the source, we have analysed three computational models of spatial morphogen propagation along the anterior-posterior axis: (a) passive diffusion modelled as a deterministic differential equation, (b) diffusion enhanced by a cytoplasmic flow term; and (c) diffusion modelled by stochastic simulation of the corresponding chemical reactions. Parameter estimation on these models by matching to publicly available data on spatio-temporal Bicoid profiles suggests strong support for regulated stability over either a constant supply rate or one where the maternal mRNA is permitted to degrade in a passive manner.  相似文献

We consider a modified Holling-type II predator–prey model, based on the premise that the search rate of predators is dependent on the prey density, rather than constant. A complete analysis of the global behavior of the model is presented, and shows that the model exhibits a dichotomy similar to the classical Holling-type II model: either the coexistence steady state is globally stable; or it is unstable, and then a unique, globally stable limit cycle exists. We discuss the similarities, but also important differences between our model and the Holling-type II model. The main differences are that: 1. The paradox of enrichment which always occurs in the Holling-type II model, does not always occur here, and 2. Even when the paradox of enrichment occurs, predators can adapt by lowering their search rate, and effectively stabilize the system.

The paradox of enrichment in an adaptive world   总被引:1,自引:0,他引:1
Paradoxically, enrichment can destabilize a predator-prey food web. While adaptive dynamics can greatly influence the stability of interaction systems, few theoretical studies have examined the effect of the adaptive dynamics of interaction-related traits on the possibility of resolution of the paradox of enrichment. We consider the evolution of attack and defence traits of a predator and two prey species in a one predator-two prey system in which the predator practises optimal diet use. The results showed that optimal foraging alone cannot eliminate a pattern of destabilization with enrichment, but trait evolution of the predator or prey can change the pattern to one of stabilization, implying a possible resolution of the paradox of enrichment. Furthermore, trait evolution in all species can broaden the parameter range of stabilization. Importantly, rapid evolution can stabilize this system, but weaken its stability in the face of enrichment.  相似文献

Enrichment is an increasingly serious trend in natural ecosystems. A theoretical model of a predator–prey system with a natural assumption of satiation in predation predicts that enrichment causes the populations to fluctuate to stochastic extinction. However, this ''paradox of enrichment'' does not always occur in experimental and natural communities. Here we present a theoretical model that describes a novel mechanism for resolving the paradox in the case of a predator with optimal selective feeding. Specifically, a less profitable but edible (thus `unpalatable'') prey species sharply reduces the amplitude of population oscillations and firmly prevents the minimum abundances of species from falling below certain values. The presence of such an unpalatable prey thus guarantees the robustness of the system against enrichment.  相似文献

Proliferating cells properly divide into their daughter cells through a process that is mediated by kinetochores, protein–complexes that assemble at the centromere of each sister chromatid. Each kinetochore has to establish a tight bipolar attachment to the spindle apparatus before sister chromatid separation is initiated. The spindle assembly checkpoint (SAC) links the biophysical attachment status of the kinetochores to mitotic progression and ensures that even a single misaligned kinetochore keeps the checkpoint active. The mechanism by which this is achieved is still elusive. Current computational models of the human SAC disregard important biochemical properties by omitting any kind of feedback loop, proper kinetochore signals, and other spatial properties such as the stability of the system and diffusion effects. To allow for more realistic in silico study of the dynamics of the SAC model, a minimal mathematical framework for SAC activation and silencing is introduced. A nonlinear ordinary differential equation model successfully reproduces bifurcation signaling switches with attachment of all 92 kinetochores and activation of APC/C by kinetochore-driven feedback. A partial differential equation model and mathematical linear stability analyses indicate the influence of diffusion and system stability. The conclusion is that quantitative models of the human SAC should account for the positive feedback on APC/C activation driven by the kinetochores which is essential for SAC silencing. Experimental diffusion coefficients for MCC subcomplexes are found to be insufficient for rapid APC/C inhibition. The presented analysis allows for systems-level understanding of mitotic control, and the minimal new model can function as a basis for developing further quantitative–integrative models of the cell division cycle.  相似文献

Allochthonous resources can be found in many foodwebs and can influence both the structure and stability of an ecosystem. In order to better understand the role of how allochthonous resources are transferred as quarry from one predator-prey system to another, we propose a predator-prey-quarry-resource-scavenger (PPQRS) model, which is an extension of an existing model for quarry-resource-scavenger (a predator-prey-subsidy (PPS) model). Instead of taking the allochthonous resource input rate as a constant, as has been done in previous theoretical work, we explicitly incorporated the underlying predator-prey relation responsible for the input of quarry. The most profound differences between PPS and PPQRS system are found when the predator-prey system has limit cycles, resulting in a periodic rather than constant influx of quarry (the allochthonous resource) into the scavenger-resource interactions. This suggests that the way in which allochthonous resources are input into a predator-prey system can have a strong influence over the population dynamics. In order to understand the role of seasonality, we incorporated non-autonomous terms and showed that these terms can either stabilize or destabilize the dynamics, depending on the parameter regime. We also considered the influence of spatial motion (via diffusion) by constructing a continuum partial differential equation (PDE) model over space. We determine when such spatial dynamics essentially give the same information as the ordinary differential equation (ODE) system, versus other cases where there are strong spatial differences (such as spatial pattern formation) in the populations. In situations where increasing the carrying capacity in the ODE model drives the amplitude of the oscillations up, we found that a large carrying capacity in the PDE model results in a very small variation in average population size, showing that spatial diffusion is stabilizing for the PPQRS model.  相似文献

Cells displaying the classic multidrug resistant (MDR) phenotype possess a transmembrane protein (p170 or P-glycoprotein) which can actively extrude cytotoxic agents from the cytoplasm. A mathematical model of this drug efflux pump has been developed. Outward transport is modeled as a facilitated diffusion process. Since energy-dependent efflux of cytotoxic agents requires that ATP also bind to p170, the model includes a dynamic calculation for efflux rate which considers Michaelis-Menten kinetics for both the substrate agent and ATP. The final system consists of one partial differential equation (PDE) for the facilitated diffusion of substrate agents out of the cell a 2×2 ordinary differential equation (ODE) system for the dynamic calculation of the ATP-ADP pool, and a dynamic algebraic calculation of the efflux rate given substrate levels at the interior cell membrane interface and ATP levels in the cell. A stability analysis of the ATP-ADP pool distribution and a simplistic closed form solution of the linearized PDE are included. Numerical simulations are also provided.  相似文献

Simple predator-prey models with a prey-dependent functional response predict that enrichment (increased carrying capacity) destabilizes community dynamics: this is the 'paradox of enrichment'. However, the energy value of prey is very important in this context. The intraspecific chemical composition of prey species determines its energy value as a food for the potential predator. Theoretical and experimental studies establish that variable chemical composition of prey affects the predator-prey dynamics. Recently, experimental and theoretical approaches have been made to incorporate explicitly the stoichiometric heterogeneity of simple predator-prey systems. Following the results of the previous experimental and theoretical advances, in this article we propose a simple phenomenological formulation of the variation of energy value at increased level of carrying capacity. Results of our study demonstrate that coupling the parameters representing the phenomenological energy value and carrying capacity in a realistic way, may avoid destabilization of community dynamics following enrichment. Additionally, under such coupling the producer-grazer system persists for only an intermediate zone of production--a result consistent with recent studies. We suggest that, while addressing the issue of enrichment in a general predator-prey model, the phenomenological relationship that we propose here might be applicable to avoid Rosenzweig's paradox.  相似文献

The stability of ecosystems: A brief overview of the paradox of enrichment   总被引:1,自引:1,他引:0
In theory, enrichment of resource in a predator-prey model leads to destabilization of the system, thereby collapsing the trophic interaction,a phenomenon referred to as "the paradox of enrichment". After it was first pro posed by Rosenzweig (1971), a number of subsequent studies were carried out on this dilemma over many decades. In this article, we review these theoretical and experimental works and give a brief overview of the proposed solutions to the paradox. The mechanisms that have been discussed are modifications of simple predator -prey models in the presence of prey that is inedible, invulnerable, unpalatable and toxic. Another class of mechanisms includes an incorporation of a ratio-dependent functional form, inducible defence of prey and density-dependent mortality of the predator. Moreover, we find a third set of explanations based on complex population dynamics including chaos in space and time. We conclude that, although any one of the various mechanisms proposed so far might potentially prevent destabilization of the predator-prey dynamics following enrichment, in nature different mechanisms may combine to cause stability, even when a system is enriched. The exact mechanisms, which may differ among systems, need to be disentangled through extensive field studies and laboratory experiments coupled with realistic theoretical models.  相似文献

Destabilization of one predator–one prey systems with an increase in nutrient input has been viewed as a paradox. We report that enrichment can damp population cycles by a food‐web structure that balances inflexible and flexible interaction links (i.e. specialist and generalist predators). We modeled six predator–prey systems involving three or four species in which the predators practice optimal foraging based on prey profitability determined by handling time. In all models, the balance of interaction links simultaneously decreased the amplitude of population oscillations and increased the minimum density with increasing enrichment, leading to a potential theoretical resolution of the paradox of enrichment in non‐equilibrium dynamics. The stabilization mechanism was common to all of the models. Important previous studies on the stability of food webs have also demonstrated that a balance of interaction strengths stabilizes systems, suggesting a general rule of ecosystem stability.  相似文献

Eutrophication, often resulting from human activity, is a serious threat to aquatic communities. Theoretical analysis of this phenomenon, based on conceptual mathematical models, leads to controversial predictions known as Rosenzweig's paradox of enrichment. At the same time, field observations demonstrate that real plankton communities exhibit various mechanisms of self-regulation which can buffer negative effects of enrichment. In this paper, we study potential effects of zooplankton vertical migration on stability of plankton systems functioning. We consider an intrinsically unstable plankton model, which is characterized by an unlimited phytoplankton multiplication and population oscillations of increasing amplitude, and investigate whether vertical migrations of zooplankton can stabilize such a system at low plankton densities. By means of developing two different models accounting for different ecological situations, e.g. deep waters and shallow waters, we show that vertical migrations of zooplankton can result in stabilization of eutrophic plankton systems. Thus, we show that this mechanism, rarely taken into account in models of plankton dynamics, may be important for resolving the paradox of enrichment in plankton communities.  相似文献
