Short-term fluctuations in the reproductive condition of thelimpet Cellana capensis are described. Gravimetric and histologicalanalyses of gonadal development were carried out on samplescollected at 4 day intervals over a 3 month period from theMkambati Nature Reserve, Transkei. The results indicate a distinctlack of reproductive synchrony within the population, whichapplied not only to gametogenic development per se but alsoto spawning activity. Some of the spawning events identifiedduring the study period were more marked than others, thesemay reflect a greater degree of synchronization in activity.Results presented suggest that C. capensis is probably a ‘partial’rather than a ‘complete’ spawner. The presence of a ‘tertiary’ apertural ‘notch’has been recorded in some species of Gemmula (subfamily Turrinae)and in Aforia circinata (Turriculinae). Studies of a large seriesof the new species Gemmula lordhoweensis confirms the presenceof the notch in adult females. Surveys were conducted along the northeast coast of the USA.between Portsmouth, NH, and the Chesapeake Bay in 1988 and 1990,to determine the population distribution of Aureococcus anophagefferens,the chrysophyte responsible for massive and destructive ‘browntides’ in Long Island and Narragansett Bay beginning in1985. A species-specific immunofluorescent technique was usedto screen water samples, with positive identification possibleat cell concentrations as low as 10–20 cells ml–1.Both years.A.anophagefferens was detected at numerous stationsin and around Long Island and Barnegat Bay, NJ, typically athigh cell concentrations. To the north and south of thus ‘center’,nearly half of the remaining stations were positive for A.anophagefferens,but the cells were always at very low cell concentrations. Manyof the positive identifications in areas distant from Long Islandwere in waters with no known history of harmful brown tides.The species was present in both open coastal and estuanne locations,in salinities between 18 and 32 practical salinity units (PSU).The observed population distributions apparently still reflectthe massive 1985 outbreak when this species first bloomed, giventhe number of positive locations and high abundance of A.anophagefferensin the immediate vicinity of Long Island. However, the frequentoccurrence of this species in waters far from this population‘center’ is disturbing. Aureococcus anophagefferensis more widely distributed than was previously thought. Numerousareas thus have the potential for destructive brown tides suchas those associated with the sudden appearance of the speciesin 1985.  相似文献

A detailed morphological study of three prairie grass cultivars(Bromus willdenowii Kunth) was conducted under ‘vegetative’and ‘reproductive’ growth conditions (short andlong photoperiods) and at different temperatures. Perennialryegrass (Lolium perenne L.) and Westerwolds ryegrass (Loliummuhiflorum Lam.) were compared during vegetative growth. Prairie grass had higher leaf appearance rates (leaves per tillerper day) and lower site filling (tillers per tiller per leafappearance interval) than the ryegrass species. Tillering rates(tillers per tiller per day) were also lower, except under vegetativeconditions at 4C. Low tiller number in prairie grass was notdue to lack of tiller sites but a result of poor filling ofthese sites. Lower site filling occurred because of increaseddelays in appearance of the youngest axillary tiller and lackof axillary tillers emerging from basal tiller buds. In prairiegrass, no tillers came from coleoptile buds while only occasionallydid prophyll buds develop tillers. Low tiller number in prairiegrass was compensated for by greater tiller weight. Prairiegrass had more live leaves per tiller, greater area per leafand a high leaf area per plant. Considerable variation between cultivars was found in prairiegrass. The cultivar ‘Bellegarde’ had high leaf appearance,large leaves and rapid reproductive development, but had lowlevels of site filling, tillering rate, final tiller numberand herbage quality during reproductive growth. ‘Primabel’tended to have the opposite levels for these parameters, while‘Grasslands Matua’ was intermediate and possiblyprovided the best balance of all plant parameters. prairie grass, Bromus willdenowii Kunth, perennial ryegrass, Lolium perenne L., Westerwolds ryegrass, Lolium multiflorum Lam., temperature, photoperiod, leaf appearance, leaf area, tillering, site filling, tillering sites, yield  相似文献

Two laboratory experiments were carried out on sets of winter(inactive) pairs of Pomacea canaliculata (Lamarck), one to studythe influence of water temperature (either 18°C or 25°C,corresponding to late winter and summer temperatures in Mendoza, respectively)and day length (either 10 h light/day or 14 h light/day, correspondingto the shortest and the longest day of the year in Mendoza,respectively), and the other to determine the effects of foodavailability (ad libitum feeding vs. restriction to 25% of thead libitum requirements) on the frequency of copulation andspawning, on spawn measurements (number and volume of eggs,and spawn volume), and on an index of the reproductive effort.Animals in all experimental groups were observed during 4 weeks,after seven days of acclimation to the experimental aquaria(under low water temperature and short photoperiod). Low watertemperatures induced a lesser and later activation of copulationand spawning than that induced by warm temperatures. Day lengthwas without effect on both behaviours. Both the frequency ofspawning and the reproductive effort index decreased under restrictedfeeding, without altering the spawn measurements. The latencyperiods for both copulatory and spawning behaviours were similarin both ad libitum and restrictedly fed groups. We concludethat water temperature may be the critical factor that causesthe seasonal onset of copulatory and spawning behaviour in theseapple-snails. However, food availability may also be a determiningfactor, mainly to trigger spawning activity. These results suggestthat the factors that control the seasonal onset of the sexualactivities in Pomacea canaliculata are similar to those thatcontrol the seasonal arrest, thereby establishing the annualpattern of reproduction in this species. Females of the sac-spawning euphausiid Nyctiphanes simplex Hansenwere incubated under shipboard laboratory conditions to observethe embryonic and larval development time and hatching mechanism.Females ready to spawn have a pale pink ovary that extends fromthe back of the stomach to the first abdominal segment, fillingmost of the haemocoel. This species usually behaves as a totalspawner (produces one batch of oöcytes per cycle of theovary) leaving an ‘empty’ space in the cephalothoraxwhere the spent ovary is located. After spawning, the youngoöcytes mature and turn pale pink. The eggs do not havea measurable perivitelline space (PVS) in any of the embryonicstages (6.6 x magnification). The embryos hatch as nauplius(80–91 h after spawning, 16°C ± 1°C). Theyfurther develop into pseudometanauplii (PMN, 90–105 hafter spawning) and metanauplii (MN, 92–140 h after spawning)inside the ovigerous sac. The nauplius breaks the thin and fragilechorion by increasing the volume of the body and by using thefirst and second antennae. We call this an ‘expansion’hatching mechanism, the fifth distinct hatching mechanism observedso far among euphausiids. N. simplex larvae escape from theovigerous sac late in the MN stage (5 days after spawning),just a few hours before molting into calyptopis 1 (C1) (0.5–4h). This delayed release extends protection by the female, likelydecreasing the risk of predation or early cannibalism. Additionally,this may save energy by not swimming independently increasingthe time of not return if the calyptopis does not find favorablefeeding conditions. Females are not ready to spawn again untilat least two days after the previous batch of embryos leavesthe ovigerous sac. The interbrood period (IBP) observed rangedbetween 7 and 15 days at 16–18°C. This IBP is aboutone-fourth to half than was previously assumed for this speciessuggesting a significant underestimation of the fecundity ofthis species. N. simplex hatching success usually was 100%,except for a few females with all of their embryos dying duringembryonic development. Other females either molted before releasingthe embryos, or the oöcytes were spawned unfertilized (0%hatching success), particularly during winter conditions. Efficienthatching and late free-swimming strategy may partially explainwhy this species is the most abundant neritic euphausiid inthe southern part of the California Current System (CCS) andin the Gulf of California.  相似文献

Marked changes in the activity of the ‘de novo’and ‘salvage’ pathways of pyrimidine biosynthesisduring growth of Vinca rosea cells in a batch suspension culturewere observed. The activity of these pathways was investigated by determiningthe contribution of 14C of [2-14Cluracil, 12-14Cluridine. and[6-14Clorotate to the cell constituents and by measuring theactivity of the several enzymes of these pathways. During the lag phase of the culture, ‘uracil-’ and‘uridine-salvage’ pathways made the predominantcontribution to nucleotide biosynthesis, but, following theinitiation of cell division, the ‘de novo’ pathwayfor nucleotide biosynthesis operated appreciably. These results suggest that nucleotide synthesis during cellgrowth in a suspension culture can be divided into two stages:a ‘turnover stage’, during the lag phase of cellgrowth, and a ‘true biosynthetic stage’, which isinitiated in the cell division phase.  相似文献

Experimental animals used in studies of feeding behaviour areusually starved prior to observation, although little is knownof the behavioural effects of such pre-experimental treatment.This study investigated the effect of food deprivation on thelocomotor activity of two species of slugs, Deroceras reticulatumand Milax budapestensis. Locomotor activity was measured bythe quantitative assessment of mucus trails. The more surfaceactiveD. reticulatum showed a marked increase in its locomotoractivity when deprived of food, whereas the locomotor activityof M. budapestensis decreased. The effects of exposure of up to 2 h with sulphur dioxide ona range of plant species was observed by measuring changes inthe rate of net photosynthesis under closely controlled environmentalconditions. Ryegrass, Lolium perenne ‘S23’ was thespecies most sensitive to SO2; significant inhibition was detectedat 200 nl l–1. Fumigations at 300 nl l–1 also inhibitedphotosynthesis in field bean (Vicia faba cv. ‘Three FoldWhite’ and ‘Blaze’) and in barley (Hordeumvulgare cv. ‘Sonja’). No effect was detected inwheat (Triticum aestivum cv. ‘Virtue’) at concentrationsup to 600 nl l–1 SO2, or in oil-seed rape (Brassica napuscv. ‘Rafal’) except at 800 nl l–1 SO2). Recoverycommenced immediately after the fumigation was terminated andwas complete within 2 h when inhibition had not exceeded 20%during the SO2 treatment. The effect of body size on the oxygen consumption and metabolicrate of Cerithidea (Cerithideopsilla) cingulata (Gmelin, 1790)andCerithium coralium Kiener, 1841 was studied at a constant temperatureof 25°C. An exponential relationship has been observed inboth animals. Oxygen consumption showed a positive linear correlationwith a ‘b’ value of 0.6518 in C. cingulata and 0.7667in C. coralium. A negative linear correlation was obtained forthe metabolic rate with a (b-1) value of –0.3482 in C.cingulata and –0.2333 in C. coralium.  相似文献

By means of hand pollination experiments and fluorescence microscopythe breeding systems and pollen tube growth were studied inDolichandra cynanchoides and Tabebuia nodosa, two bignoniaceousspecies of the Chaco woodland of NE Argentina. Both speciesabscised all selfed pistils within 4–8 d although selfpollen tubes grew successfully to the ovary and penetrated manyovules. Both species therefore show ‘late-acting self-incompatibility’(LSI) or ‘ovarian sterility’ (OS) type control ofselfing. LSI-OS has been reported in 17 species of the Bignoniaceae,and is also clustered in families such as the Bombacaceae-Sterculiaceae,Fabaceae and Myrtaceae. The implications of such family clusteringare discussed, with regard to current hypotheses for the actionof LSI-OS phenomena. Plant growth was assessed and cellular protein per nuclear DNAamount measured in root meristems and in callus derived fromembryos of a spring (‘Katepwa’) and a winter variety(‘Beaver’) of allohexaploid wheat exposed to lowtemperature treatment. The data obtained were used to test whetherthese genetically distinct varieties of wheat responded differentiallyto cold treatment. Seedlings were grown for 14 d at 20°Cand then transferred to 4°C for 14 d before returning themto 20°C, or else were maintained continuously at 20°C.In winter wheat, root growth at 4°C was significantly greaterover the first 7 d following transfer to 4°C compared withplants retained at 20°C, whereas in spring wheat it wasreduced at 4°C. The pattern of accumulation of cellularprotein for both root meristem cells and in callus cells wasalso generally enhanced at 4°C compared with 20°C inwinter wheat but not in spring wheat. Thus, clear inter-varietaldifferences were established both for dry weight accumulationand cellular protein, and the callus data clearly show thatthe low-temperature-induced accumulation of protein is a cellularphenomenon not necessarily linked to development. The extentto which cold-shock proteins are a component of this low temperature-inducedincrease in cellular protein is discussed. Seed production, germination and plant growth form were studiedin several species of Veronica. The objectives were to comparethe reproductive strategies of annual and perennial speciesof Veronica which varied in their habitats and aggressivenessas weeds. ‘Reproductive effort’ was fairly similar for bothannuals and perennials, falling within the commonly observedrange for annual species. Seed number per capsule and the 100-seedweight were unaffected by the growth conditions but plant growthform was substantially modified in V. agrestis. The small-seeded Veronica species required light for germinationand the winter annual V. hederifolia germinated much more vigorouslyafter a low temperature treatment. The growth form, vigour andextent of adventitious root production and rapid seed germinationof V. persica must be significant factors in the spread andestablishment of this species. Simulated swards of each of two selection lines of Lolium perennecv. S23 with ‘fast’ and ‘slow’ ratesof ‘mature tissue’ respiration were establishedin growth rooms at 20/15 °C day/night temperatures and studiedover four successive regrowth periods of 46, 30, 26 and 53 daysduration. The ‘slow’ line outyielded the ‘fast’,both in harvestable shoot (above a 5 cm cut) and in root andstubble. Its advantage increased over successive regrowth periodsto 23 per cent (total biomass). Gas analysis measurements onthe entire communities (including roots), during the final regrowthperiod, showed that the ‘slow’ line had a 22–34per cent lower rate of dark respiration per unit dry weight.This enabled it to maintain its greater mass of tissue for thesame cost in terms of CO2 efflux per unit ground area. Halfthe extra dry weight produced by the ‘slow’ line,relative to the ‘fast’, could be attributed to itsmore economic use of carbon. The rest could be traced to a 25per cent greater tiller number which enabled the ‘slow’line to expand leaf area faster (though not at a greater rateper tiller), intercept more light and fix more carbon, earlyin the regrowth period. Seasonal changes in total carbohydrates, glycogen, free sugars,proteins, TNPS and lipids, were studied in different body components(foot, gonad-digestive gland complex and viscera) of Morulagranulata from January to December 1982. All biochemical constituentsshowed a progressive increase during May–October and adecrease during November–April; some exhibited a secondaryJanuary peak. These changes were correlated to the reproductivecycle and feeding of the animal. Utilisation of lipids was greaterduring the reproductive season indicating a ‘lipid-oriented’ metabolism. Seasonal changes in the water content offoot, gonad-digestive complexand viscera were also reported.The results are discussed in relation to other observationson gastropods and other molluscs. Cymbulia peroni produces forward propulsion only on the upstrokeof its ‘wingbeat’ the downstroke opposing slightnegative buoyancy. The species' torpedo-shaped pseudoconchaprovides stability as well as buoyancy. Corolla ovata producespropulsive power on the downstroke of its ’wings‘and shows periods of active upward swimming alternating withpassive downward gliding/parachuting. Both cymbuliid speciesare gelatinous slow movers, close to neutral buoyancy, and areincapable of effective diurnal vertical migration. Two cavoliniidspecies were also studied; Cilo pyramida and Cuvierina columnella.Both were dense and sank quickly if they ceased active swimming.Both had postural responses to slow sinking, but vigorous activitywas required to hover in the water column. Clio could not climbrapidly enough to carry out effective diurnal vertical migration,but was capable of fast horizontal swimming during which thetriangular shell appeared to act as a hydrofoil. The smallerCuvierina could not swim quickly in a horizontal direction,but was capable of swimming vertically at rates sufficient tomaintain station with moving isolumes and may therefore carryout significant diurnal vertical migrations. This review compares new developmental models on flowering andother vascular plants with evolutionary hypotheses formulatedby Agnes Arber (1879–1960) and like-minded botanists.Special emphasis is laid on philosophical basics such as perspectivism,pluralism about evolutionary modelling, continuum way of thinking,and fuzzy logic. Arber's perspective is best labelled as F uzzyA rberian M orphology (FAM Approach). Its proponents (‘FAMmers’)treat structural categories (e.g. ‘roots’, ‘shoots’,‘stems’, ‘leaves’, ‘stipules’)in vascular plants as concepts with fuzzy borderlines allowingintermediates (including transitional forms, developmental mosaics).The FAM Approach complements Cla ssical Plant M orphology (ClaMApproach), which is the traditional approach in botany. ClaMproponents (‘ClaMmers’) postulate that the structuralcategories of vascular plants are regarded as concepts withclear-cut borderlines and without intermediates. However, duringthe evolution of vascular plants, the root-shoot distinctionand the stem-leaf distinction have become blurred several timesdue to developmental changes, resulting in organs with uniquecombinations of features. This happened, for example, in thebladderworts (Utricularia, Lentibulariaceae). When focusingon the ‘leaf’, the FAM Approach is identical toArber's ‘partial-shoot theory of the leaf’ and Sinha's‘leaf shoot continuum model’. A compound leaf canrepeat the developmental pathway of the whole shoot, at leastto some degree. For example, compound leaves of Chisocheton(Meliaceae)with indeterminate apical growth and three-dimensional branchingmay be seen as developmental mosaics sharing some growth processeswith whole shoots! We focus here on the FAM Approach becausethis perspective is especially promising for developmental geneticistsstudying flowering and other vascular plants. Data are furnished respecting the average output of fruits ofPulicaria vulgaris and the ‘reproductive capacity’is estimated as about 2,300. Germination experiments are describedthat show this to be quasi-simultaneous both in light and indarkness. This is contrasted with the more prolonged germinationof P. dysenterica. The seedling of P. vulgaris has a prominentlydeveloped collet which bears numerous supporting root-hairs.Comparison of the effects of homogeneous and heterogeneous competitionin cultures indicate that this may be an important factor indetermining the predominant occurrence of P. vulgaris in habitatspoor in bases. Viviparous germination is recorded; this hazardand the late maturation of fruits are suggested as possiblefactors determining the ‘continental’ type of distributionof this species. Despite its reproductive potential and effective dispersal P.vulgaris has markedly diminished in frequency and this, it issuggested, may be a consequence of successional repression.  相似文献

The structural development of the stems and basal anchorageroots of Galahad and Hereward winter wheat cultivars (Triticumaestivum L.) were investigated and related to their mechanicalfunction. Stem and root morphology, anatomy and mechanical propertieswere examined from tillering (March) up to maturity (August),together with plant weight distribution. This allowed us tocalculate a ‘factor of safety’ against root andstem failure throughout development. As the plants grew taller the stem and the anchorage ‘coronalroots’ increased in bending strength countering the increasingmechanical demands. The bending strength, in turn, was correlatedwith the amount of lignified material around the stem and rootperimeter. Structural development ceased by ear emergence, whenthe plant was at its tallest, but because the ear weight continuedto rise the ‘self-weight’ moment pushing the plantover continued to increase. This meant that the ‘safetyfactors’ of both cultivars against both root and stemmechanical failure decreased throughout development. In bothcultivars the safety factors against root failure were lowerthan for stem failure, and Galahad had lower factors of safetythan Hereward. All these findings were consistent with resultsof field trials; failure tends to occur late in development,during grain filling, and is localized to the root system, whilstGalahad is more prone to lodging than Hereward. The pattern of mechanical development of winter wheat seemsto be one which would maximize its reproductive success, maintainingits structural integrity especially early in development whileinvesting in a minimum of structural material. Drakeford, D. R., Mukherjee, I. and Reid, D. M. 1985. Some earlyresponses of Helianthus annuus L. to flooding. I. The effectsof flooding on the uptake and leakage of ‘non-electrolytes’by roots.—J. exp. Bot. 36: 1705–1715. The object of this work was to examine some of the early effectsof flooding on roots. A hydroponic system was developed thatgave good control over watering, degree of oxygenation of thebathing medium and allowed measurement of short term changesin the composition of the bathing medium. Excised roots, floodedfor 24 h, were shown to take up less [3H) ß-alaninethan non-flooded roots and also leaked more [3H] ß-alanineinto a distilled water bathing medium. Further, flooded excisedroots lost more protein to the bathing medium, with ‘young’(5–7 d) roots showing greater losses than ‘old’(11–14 d) roots. However, young roots had more proteinin the tissue even after greater loss. Young roots remainedhealthier and lost less fresh weight than old roots.
