Maternal allocation of antioxidants to egg yolk has been shown to affect early embryonic development and nestling survival. In environments with high levels of anthropogenic pollution, antioxidants (such as carotenoids) are important to protect the body from elevated oxidative stress. Thus, female allocation of antioxidants to yolk may be traded off against self-maintenance. Here we investigate maternal reproductive investment with respect to yolk carotenoid content and composition in relation to subsequent female condition and carotenoid status in urban and rural great tits Parus major. We found no differences between the urban and rural populations in total yolk carotenoids, egg mass, clutch size, hatching success, or female carotenoid status. Interestingly, however, rural eggs contained more zeaxanthin, a more potent antioxidant than lutein, which suggests that rural embryos have better antioxidant protection than urban embryos. Whether rural females actively transfer more zeaxanthin to the yolk or whether it passively reflects differences in dietary access or uptake needs to be further investigated. This highlights the importance of carotenoid identity and composition in future studies of carotenoid physiology, ecology, and signaling.  相似文献

Drought and waterlogging are important abiotic stresses negatively affecting plant growth and development. They are transiently recurring in rainfed lowlands and in water-saving system practicing intermittent irrigation. This study aimed to determine the contribution of plastic development and associated physiological responses of roots to shoot dry matter production under transient soil moisture stresses. To minimize effect of genetic confounding, a selected line (CSSL47) drawn from 54 chromosome segment substitution lines (CSSL) of Nipponbare (japonica type) carrying an overlapping chromosome segments of Kasalath (indica type), was used and compared with the recurrent parent Nipponbare. Under transient droughted-to-waterlogged (D–W) conditions, CSSL47 showed greater shoot dry matter production than Nipponbare. This was due largely to its greater root system development through high induction of aerenchyma formation. Consequently, aerenchyma development effectively facilitated the internal diffusion of oxygen (O2) to the root tips under sudden waterlogged condition supporting rapid recovery of stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. Likewise, CSSL47 showed greater shoot dry matter production than Nipponbare under transient waterlogged-to-droughted (W–D) conditions. This was due to CSSL47’s greater root system development through more initiation of L type lateral roots that effectively maintained soil water uptake. This in turn sustained higher stomatal conductance, transpiration, and photosynthesis. Results implied that utilization of CSSLs could precisely reveal that root plastic development in response to transient soil moisture stresses contributed to the maintenance of shoot dry matter production.  相似文献

Adult females from the S3 and the S4 generations of lines which had undergone previous selection for persistence and non-persistence of antibody production to sheep red blood cells, were placed in the following situations: (1) one-third remained in the same cages they were placed in at the time of caging, (2) one-third were moved to other but essentially identical single cages, and (3) one-third were paired in neutral but essentially identical cages with females from the other line. Characteristics measured were: “fear”, head shaking, social rank, comb size, body weight, antibody titers, plasma corticosterone levels, and the number and size of heterophils and lymphocytes. Although differences between lines were not significant for most of the characteristics measured, the pullets from the persistent line exhibited significantly less “fear”, had smaller lymphocytes and lost less body weight when moved than those from the non-persistent line. Temporal comparisons among pre-movement, one-day post-movement and seven-day post-movement times revealed significant differences for plasma corticosterone levels, antibody titers, number and size of lymphocytes, and size of heterophils. Significant differences were noted among movement treatments for changes in body weight and for number of air sac lesions to an E. coli challenge. It appeared that the physical and social effects were cumulative for most of the traits in both lines.  相似文献

"AimsThe growth of plant species in tropical dry forest (TDF) is expected to be largely governed by the availability of soil moisture. In this study we attempt to identify mechanisms by which seedlings of dry tropical trees cope with water stress by adjusting their leaf characteristics to water availability and micro environments, and address following questions: How are leaf traits and relative growth rate (RGR) of the dominant seedling species of TDF affected by seasonal changes in soil moisture content (SMC)? What is the relationship of functional traits with each other? Can leaf traits singly or in combination predict the growth rate of seedling species of TDF? The study was conducted in situ on four sites (viz., Hathinala, Gaighat, Harnakachar and Ranitali, listed in order of decreasing SMC) within the tropical dry deciduous forest in northern India. Methods Five leaf traits viz., specific leaf area (SLA), leaf dry matter content (LDMC), concentrations of leaf nitrogen (leaf N), phosphorus (leaf P) and chlorophyll (Chl) and two physiological processes, viz., stomatal conductance (Gs net) and photosynthetic rate (A net), and RGR, of four dominant tree seedling species of a TDF (viz., Buchanania lanzan, Diospyros melanoxylon, Shorea robusta and Terminalia tomentosa) on four sites were analysed for species, site and season effects over a 2-year period. Step-wise multiple regression was performed to predict RGR from mean values of SMC, leaf traits and physiological processes. Principal component analysis (PCA) was performed to observe the extent of intra- vs. inter-specific variability in the leaf traits and physiological rates.Important findings All the traits and physiological rates were interrelated and showed significant positive relationship with RGR except for the correlation of LDMC with RGR which was not significant. Further, relationships of SMC with all leaf traits, physiological rates and RGR were significant, except for that between SMC and SLA for B. lanzan and D. melanoxylon. The slope of seedling trait:SMC relationship, a measure of phenotypic plasticity in response to soil moisture gradient, varied among species. Among the four species, T. tomentosa was the most plastic and S. robusta the least. In conclusion, leaf traits and physiological processes were strongly related to soil water availability on the one hand and seedling growth on the other. Gs net is the most important variable which accounted for the greatest amount of variability (62%) in RGR, emphasizing the role of stomatal conductance in shaping growth patterns across spatial and temporal gradients of soil water availability. Gs net and SMC together explained 64% variability in RGR, indicating that other traits/factors, not studied by us are also important in modulating the growth of tropical tree seedlings.  相似文献

Summary Growth from hatching to the onset of lay (sexual maturity) was studied in White Plymouth Rock pullets from lines selected for high (HN) and low (LN) 56-day body weight, their reciprocal F1 crosses, an F2 cross, and two dwarf populations originating from the HN and LN parental lines. The highest R2s for describing growth for all populations except HN were obtained when body weight was expressed relative to body weight at sexual maturity. Modes of inheritance differed depending on whether patterns of growth were expressed in a chronological time frame or on a physiological basis. Heterosis observed for age at sexual maturity and for body weight after the age when selection was made was not in evidence when ages and weights were expressed as a proportion of those at sexual maturity. This research was supported, in part, by BARD Project No. US-675-83C  相似文献

The egg laying pattern of the spotted stalk borer on sorghum and maize, Chilo partellus (Swinhoe) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) was studied during the first three nights of oviposition under laboratory conditions. More than 50% of both eggs and egg batches are laid during the first night of oviposition. Batch size decreases with time, whereas mean egg weight remains constant.Larger females lay both larger eggs and egg batches than smaller ones. They are also more fecund but it is only the second night of oviposition that contributes significantly to this difference. The reproductive effort decreases much with time. Allocation of reproductive reserves to early eggs seems more important than having eggs evenly distributed over time. Larger females use proportionally more resources to the production of late eggs. Large eggs are likely to contain more yolk which could be of importance for the ballooning behaviour of newly hatched larvae.

Egg production, growth and development rates of Oithona similiswere measured in the laboratory as a function of food concentrationand composition. On an optimum diet, development is isochronaland growth is near exponential. The maximum juvenile growthrate at 15C (0.2 day–1) is similar to juvenile growthin calanoid copepods. The maximum weight-specific egg productionrate (0.1 day–1), on the other hand, is substantiallyless than in free-spawning calanoids, but similar to that inegg-carrying calanoids. In the Kattegat, Oithona spp. egg productionis strongly limited by food during summer and controlled bytemperature during winter. The seasonal signal in fecundityand population biomass is much weaker than in the co-occurringfree-spawning calanoid genera, where fecundity and populationbiomass undergo dramatic seasonal viaration. 1Present address: Instituto Nacional de Investigacin y DesarrolloPesquero, INIDEP, CC 175, Playa Grande, Mar del Plata, Argentina  相似文献

We investigated the effects of seasonal changes in soil moisture on the morphological and growth traits of fine roots (<2?mm in diameter) in a mature Turkey-oak stand (Quercus cerris L.) in the Southern Apennines of Italy. Root samples (diameter:?<0.5, 0.5?C1.0, 1.0?C1.5, and 1.5?C2.0?mm) were collected with the Auger method. Mean annual fine-root mass and length on site was 443?g?m?2 (oak fine roots 321?g?m?2; other species 122?g?m?2) and 3.18?km?m?2 (oak fine roots 1.14?km?m?2; other species 2.04?km?m?2), respectively. Mean specific root length was 8.3?m?g?1. All fine-root traits displayed a complex pattern that was significantly related to season. In the four diameter classes, both fine-root biomass and length peaked in summer when soil water content was the lowest and air temperature the highest of the season. Moreover, both fine-root biomass and length were inversely related with soil moisture (p?<?0.001). The finest roots (<0.5?mm in diameter) constituted an important fraction of total fine-root length (79?%), but only 21?% of biomass. Only in this root class, consequent to change in mean diameter, specific root length peaked when soil water content was lowest showing an inverse relationship (p?<?0.001). Furthermore, fine-root production and turnover decreased with increasing root diameter. These results suggest that changes in root length per unit mass, and pulses in root growth to exploit transient periods of low soil water content may enable trees to increase nutrient and water uptake under seasonal drought conditions.  相似文献

Egg production in passerines and other birds requires rapid synthesis of proteins and lipids. We hypothesized that these biosynthetic demands would necessitate hypertrophy of the liver, which produces the yolk precursors vitellogenin and very low-density lipoprotein (VLDL), and of the metabolic machinery that supports the liver's biosynthetic activity (e.g., heart, kidneys, lungs, and digestive organs). To test this hypothesis, free-living female European starlings (Sturnus vulgaris) were collected through two breeding seasons. Change in liver mass in relation to breeding stage differed between years, as did the relationship between liver mass and plasma vitellogenin levels. In the first year, dry lean glycogen-free liver mass showed little seasonal variation and was not correlated with vitellogenin levels among egg-laying females. In the second year, liver mass was 4%-44% greater during egg laying than at other stages of breeding and was positively related to vitellogenin levels. In both years, the mass of the liver was not related to plasma VLDL levels. Thus, we did not find consistent relationships between liver mass and its biosynthetic output. In contrast to our hypotheses, the masses of the heart and digestive organs were lower during egg laying than they were before breeding. Meeting the biosynthetic demands of egg production does not appear to require hypertrophy of the liver or supporting metabolic machinery.  相似文献

Vitellocytes have two important functions in cestode embryogenesis: (1) formation of hard egg-shell (e.g. Pseudophyllidea) or a delicate capsule (e.g. Cyclophyllidea), and (2) supplying nutritive reserves for the developing embryos. During evolution any of these two functions can be reduced or intensified in different taxa depending on the type of their embryonic development, degree of ovoviviparity and life cycles. Within the Cestoda, there are three monozoic taxa with only one set of genital organs: Amphilinidea, Gyrocotylidea and Caryophyllidea. In these monozoic taxa and some polyzoic groups with well developed vitellaria (e.g. Pseudophyllidea, Trypanorhyncha) a single oocyte [=germocyte] and a large number of vitellocytes (up to 30) are enclosed within a thick, hardened egg-shell, forming a type of eggs typical for the basic pattern of Neodermata. Only one type of egg-shell enclosures, the so-called 'heterogeneous shell-globule vesicle' is common for the above mentioned cestode taxa. Each membrane-bounded vesicle of mature vitellocytes contains numerous electron-dense shell globules embedded in a translucent matrix. In free-living Neoophora and Monogenea there are two types of vesicles with dense granules; the second is considered to be proteinaceous reserve material. Within the Cestoda, the numbers of vitellocytes per germocyte are reduced in those taxa forming eggs of the 'Cyclophyllidean-type' (e.g. Cyclophyllidea, Tetraphyllidea, Pseudophyllidea). This is particularly evident in Cyclophyllidea; for example, in vitellocytes of Hymenolepis diminuta (Hymenolepididae) there are numerous vitelline granules of homogeneously electron-dense material; in Catenotaenia pusilla (Catenotaeniidae) there are three large, homogenous vitelline vesicles, while in Inermicapsifer madagascariensis (Anoplocephalidae) there is only one large vitelline vesicle, containing homogeneously electron-dense material, which occupies most of the vitelline cell volume. In this respect the Tetraphyllidea and Proteocephalidea, in forming eggs that lack a hard egg-shell, hold an intermediate position. A comparison of interrelationships which exist among types of vitellocytes, vitellogenesis, types of embryonic development, ovoviviparity and life cycles indicates parallelisms and analogies in adaptation to the parasitic way of life in different groups of cestodes. Knowledge on cestode vitellogenesis may also have an important applied aspect. Vitellocytes, due to their high metabolic rate, represent a very sensitive target for analysing effect of anthelminthic drugs upon the egg formation (ovicidal effects); rapid degeneration of vitellocytes is usually accompanied by a cessation of egg production.  相似文献

Abstract. 1. Egg weights decrease over the oviposition period in all of the five satyrid butterflies that have been studied, viz Parage aegeria L., Lasiommata petropolitana F., L.maera L., L.megera L. and Lopingaachine Scop. However, within each species, no correlation was found between variation in egg weight and egg mortality in 30% relative humidity or the ability of newly hatched larvae to survive without food for 1–4 days. 2. Although egg weights of Papilio machaon L. were similar to the highest satyrid egg weights, newly hatched larvae of P.machaon showed significantly higher mortality after 1 day of starvation when compared to all of the satyrid larvae. This indicates that the capability of newly hatched larvae to endure starvation is not necessarily correlated with egg weight, and consequently that this character trait of satyrid larvae has been selected for (i.e. should be regarded as an adaptation). It is noteworthy that this ability of satyrid larvae to endure starvation is coupled with the habit of many satyrid butterflies not to deposit their eggs directly on the larval host plants. 3. In 30% relative humidity, egg mortality of L.achine was 100% and that of P.aegeria 29.2%, whereas that of the three Lasiommata spp. was significantly lower. At 100% relative humidity egg mortality in L.achine dropped to 8%. Since egg weights are higher in L.achine than in the other four satyrids this indicates that egg resistance to desiccation is not necessarily correlated with egg size (as might be expected due to the area to volume ratio which is negatively correlated with egg size). Thus the resistance to desiccation which is found in the three Lasiommata spp. should be regarded as an adaptation to the habit of these three butterflies to deposit their eggs in relatively dry microhabitats. This resistance to desiccation is not found in eggs of the two forest-dwelling satyrids P.aegeria and L.achine which lay their eggs in microhabitats where the relative humidity is high.  相似文献

Recently, increasing evidence suggested that miRNAs contribute to the regulation of adipose deposition and fat metabolism [1-7]. Meanwhile, several studies have consistently indicated that miRNAs are involved in metabolic functions of the liver, including glucose and lipid metabolism [8-12].  相似文献

Chicken egg yolk contains an adenosine deaminase that was investigated after purifying about 500 times. It has a pH optimum at 6.5, aKm of 6.6 times 10(-5) mol/l and an approximate molecular weight of 14000; higher molecular forms could not be detected. It was compared with the adenosine deaminases of chicken liver and blood plasma. From this comparison it is evident that this protein has undergone certain changes during the successive events leading to its final structure (secretion by the liver, transport through blood plasma to the oocytes and development of the egg): a common subunit with an approximate molecular weight of 15000 may be the basis of the physiological diversifications. Substrate specificity of the purified extracts extends to cytidine and guanosine also, although certain observations point to different enzymes being involved. Deoxyadenosine is also deaminated. Cu2+, Zn2+, and Pb2+ are inhibiting and free -SH seems essential for activity.  相似文献

Type traits (TTs) can contribute to breeding animals with good economic traits such as production, longevity, fertility, and profitability. Dairy buffaloes are the second largest source of milk supply in the world, and their TTs should be taken into consideration in future dairy buffalo breeding programmes. However, the relationship between TTs and milk production traits in buffalo remains largely unknown. The study aimed to establish an early selection method for buffaloes with desirable milk performance by TTs. Using 1 908 records from 678 buffaloes, the relationship between TTs and milk production traits was analysed and the optimal growth curves of TTs related to milk production traits were constructed. We examined the correlations between 45 TTs (33 body structural, 12 udder and teat morphological traits) and three milk production traits (milk yield (MY), milk fat percentage (MF), and milk protein percentage (MP)). The results showed that the highest correlation was found between MY and udder circumference (r = 0.438), teat length (r = ?0.380) or heart girth (r = ?0.341). The teat distance and teat circumference exhibited a significant negative correlation with MF and MP. Rump length was the only trait that had a significant positive correlation with milk production traits, suggesting that milk performance could be comprehensively improved by including rump length in the selection procedure. Notably, we found that high milk production traits was obtained from the buffaloes with short teats (<6 cm), small heart girth (<200 cm), large udder circumference (>104 cm), long rump (>39 cm), and small distance between teats. Moreover, an early selection method for buffaloes with excellent milk performance was developed based on the non-linear models. Brody model exhibited the best fitting effect for heart girth and rump length, while the Logistic model displayed the best fitting effect for teat length. Our findings provide theoretical basis for the early selection of buffaloes with desirable milk performance.  相似文献

Adult cat fleas, Ctenocephalides felis felis (Bouché), on cats (Felis catus) were exposed to emissions from an ultrasonic flea collar worn by the cat. No significant differences were found in total numbers of eggs produced per day (mean = 524 control, 614 treatment), in length of larval development time (mean = 7.7 d control, 7.7 d treatment), or in total daily pupal production (mean = 485 control, 445 treatment) between the treatment and the control groups. Tests off the host were conducted to determine whether ultrasonic exposure caused mortality in adult fleas; no significant differences were found in daily mortality between the treated and control fleas during 1 wk of exposure.  相似文献

An apolipoprotein-E (apo-E) cDNA probe, cloned by immunoscreening of a lambda GT11 rat liver cDNA library, was used to further characterize the expression of the apo-E gene in rat liver during development, in relation to plasma insulin and glucagon levels. The apo-E mRNA level was low in fetus liver, then abruptly increased at birth and rose further during the suckling period. It returned to the level at birth in 10-week-old adults. These variations were paralleled with dramatic changes in plasma glucagon, which rose at birth and remained high during suckling. At the same time, the insulin/glucagon molar ratio fell. Administration of N6,O2-dibutyryl cAMP to 5-day-old rats resulted in a significant induction of liver apo-E mRNA. Moreover, liver apo-E mRNA rose in 10-h-fasted suckling rats as compared to controls, while plasma glucagon increased and the insulin/glucagon ratio decreased. Conversely, glucose feeding of suckling rats did not induce any increase in liver apo-E mRNA, the insulin/glucagon ratio was 10-fold higher than in fasted animals. Our results are consistent with liver apo-E gene expression being under the control of plasma glucagon and of the glucagon/insulin balance.  相似文献
