Nacobbodera chitwoodi, n. gen., n. sp., representing Nacobboderinae n. subfam, in the Nacobbidae, is described and illustrated from roots of Douglas fir, Pseudotsuga menziesii near Florence Oregon. This new species, having characters common to Nacobbidae, Heteroderidae, and Meloidogynidae, appears to represent a connecting link between these three families of the Heteroderoidea. Especially, a distinct tail on swollen adult females, vermiform shape of juvenile females, and the shape and sclerotization of the head of the various stages, indicate a Nacobbidae relationship. Certain other characteristics present in this new species are of the Heteroderidae and Meloidogynidae type as follows: Gross shape of adult female in posterior half of body, two ovaries, anterior position of excretory pore as in Meloidogyne females, absence of a bursa, and development of male within a sausage-shaped cuticle as in root-knot and cyst nematodes.  相似文献

We examined the influence of calcium (Ca) and aluminum (Al) nutrition on the foliar physiology of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and balsam fir [Abies balsamea (L.) Mill.] in northern New England, USA. At the Hubbard Brook Experimental Forest (NH, USA), spruce and fir saplings were sampled from control, Al-, and Ca-supplemented plots at a long-established nutrient perturbation (NuPert) study in fall 2008. Measurements included cation concentrations (roots and foliage), dark-adapted chlorophyll fluorescence (F v/F m), soluble sugar concentrations, and ascorbate peroxidase (APX) and glutathione reductase (GR) activity in current-year foliage. Additional untreated saplings were sampled from base-rich Sleepers River (VT) and base-poor Jeffers Brook (NH) for F v/F m and foliar nutrient concentrations. At NuPert, there were significantly greater Ca concentrations and Ca:Al ratios in roots from the Ca end vs. the Al end of the Al-control-Ca addition gradient. There were also trends toward greater foliar Ca and Ca:Al ratios and lower Al concentrations across the treatment gradient at NuPert and for foliage at Sleepers River vs. Jeffers Brook. At NuPert, F v/F m and APX activity increased across the treatment gradient, and red spruce was higher in these measures than balsam fir. These patterns were also observed when Jeffers Brook and Sleepers River were compared. Increased Ca availability appeared to enhance the ability of red spruce and balsam fir to repair oxidative stress damage, including photooxidation. Our findings support work indicating a greater contemporary level of stress for balsam fir relative to red spruce, which is surprising considering the well-documented regional decline of spruce.  相似文献

This paper explores the temporal stability of growth/climate relationships in ring-width chronologies of Norway spruce [ Picea abies (L.) Karst] and silver fir ( Abies alba Mill) in the Lower Bavarian Forest region in southern Germany. These chronologies were compiled, using both historic and living tree-ring data, with the main aim of developing a dendroclimatic reconstruction for the region covering the last 500 years. Moving window correlation analysis shows that prior to the twentieth century, both species co-vary in a similar way (1480–1899 mean r =0.66). There is no significant correlation between the species chronologies since ca. 1930, which partly reflects anomalous growth trends in the fir chronology since ca. 1960. Multiple regression analysis was utilised to assess the ability of both species chronologies to model March–August precipitation. The precipitation signal of the spruce data was found to be both stronger than the fir data (1872–1930 calibration: r 2=0.45 vs 0.25) and more time stable. After ca. 1930, the fir chronology loses it ability to model March–August precipitation until there is no climate signal at all in the fir data in recent decades. The spruce data also express a later weakening in their climate signal in the mid 1970s. We present compelling evidence indicating that the anomalous trends observed in the fir data, since the mid 1960s, appear to be predominantly related to local SO2 emissions from power plants and refineries. It is also likely that this local anthropogenic forcing is the cause of the weakening of the climate signal in the spruce data since the mid 1970s. The conclusions from this study are: (1) The fir tree-ring data cannot be used for traditional dendroclimatic calibration, although prior to the twentieth century the decadal variability in the fir data is very similar to spruce and so these data could be used to extend potential reconstructions in the future; (2) The recent decline and recovery event in the fir data appears to be unique to the twentieth century and is not part of a natural episodic phenomenon; (3) Traditional dendroclimatic calibration of March–August precipitation will be made using solely the spruce ring-width data. However, due to SO2 forcing in recent decades, the calibration period will be shortened to the 1871–1978 period.  相似文献

The feeding behaviour of Hirschmanniella oryzae, H. imamuri, and H. spinicaudata on excised rice roots was very similar to that of other tylenchid nematodes on other hosts. Juveniles and adults of all three species invaded rice roots, causing extensive mechanical damage. Feeding and burrowing activities predisposed roots to secondary infection in unsterile cultures. Surface-sterilized nematodes did not induce necrosis in axenic cultures.  相似文献

The effect of a Paratrichodorus sp. (close to P. tunisiensis) on the growth of wheat (Triticum durum Desf.) was investigated in pots containing different nematode densities and maintained in a growth chamber at 20 C for 40 days. The relation between fresh weight of tops and initial nematode density was according to the equation y = m + (1 - m)zP⁻T. This suggests a tolerance limit of 1.4 nematodes/cm³ of soil under the conditions of the experiment; taking into account the effect of the great nematode mortality, it is estimated to be between 0.15 and 0.35 nematodes/cm³ soil. Models of the growth of the plants and the multiplication of the nematodes (assuming a constant mortality of the nematodes in the absence of roots) which explain the relation between initial and tinal nematodes densities at initial densities greater than 1 nematode/cm³ soil are described in an appendix. Sections of nematode infested roots showed disorganization of root structure clue to abnormal proliferation of lateral roots. Nematode feeding on the root cap and apical meristem caused cessation of root elongation and induced abnormal production of lateral root primordia.  相似文献

Secondary metabolites (SMs) are organic compounds of low molecular mass that represent a vast chemical diversity. In plants, one of their preeminent roles is their repellent activity against predators. The Eurasian red squirrels (Sciurus vulgaris) is one of the most important predators of conifer tree seeds in boreal and alpine forests in Europe. Its population dynamics and space use are strongly affected by the size of Norway spruce (Picea abies) seed-crops, but not by silver fir (Abies alba) seed-crops. Moreover, squirrel heavily feed on spruce seeds but tend to avoid fir seeds, although the latter has a higher seed-energy content per cone. We tested the hypothesis that a higher concentration of some SMs in fir than in spruce seeds and/or cone scales, the protective tissue of seeds, was related with squirrel feeding preferences. We determined terpene concentrations in the cyclohexane extract of seeds and scales by gas-chromatography–electron ionisation mass-spectrometry (GC/EI-MS), and measured the protein precipitation activity of tannin contained in spruce and fir seeds and scales. Of the nearly 300 separated chemical entities, only limonene, α- and β-pinene and myrcene occurred in all samples and their levels accounted for 80% or more of all cyclohexane-extractable materials of fir and for less than 50% of that of spruce. In fir, limonene was by far the most abundant compound, and fir scales had a 13 times higher concentration of α-pinene than spruce scales. Fir seeds had much higher limonene concentrations than fir scales and than seeds or scales of spruce. Tannin concentrations were higher in cone scales than in seeds, with no differences between the two tree species. This study suggests that high concentrations of limonene might reduce the feeding activity of red squirrels on fir seeds, and that the preferred spruce seeds had much lower monoterpene concentrations. Feeding trials using food items treated with different concentrations of limonene will be carried out to confirm this hypothesis.  相似文献

Pratylenchus vulnus (L₃, L₄, adults) are attracted to the roots of growing bean seedlings. The attraction is inhibited by treating the nematodes with solutions of carbofuran or phenamiphos at concentrations below those necessary to inhibit motility and dispersion. Nematicide treatments of plants without treatment of nematodes are ineffectual because nematodes are attracted equally well to treated and untreated seedlings.  相似文献

Data are presented for what we believe to be the first assessment of the elemental foliar status of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) and Fraser fir [Abies fraseri (Pursh.) Poir.] trees in the high elevation forests of the southern Appalachian mountans. Needle samples were collected from September–November 1984. Needles were separated according to flush year for the 1984, 1983 and 1982 growing seasons. Each sample was analyzed without washing for 28 macro- and micronutrients and trace elements. Significant differences in foliar concentrations were observed between flush year for N, P, Ca, Mg, K, Cl, Cu, Ce, Th, Cs, Pb, Fe, La and Rb for Fraser fir (n=41), and P, Ca, K, Cl, Cu, Pb and Rb for red spruce (n=30). Nitrogen concentrations ranged from 11.2–20.2 mg g?1 for Fraser fir, and 8.7–15.9 mg g?1 for red pruce. The mean concentration of Ca observed in red spruce needles (1.4 mg g?1 1984 growing season) fell at the low extreme of reported values for non-necrotic red spruce foliage in the northeastern United States (1.2–11.6 mg g?1). The mean concentration of Ca in Fraser fir foliage (3.4 mg g?1, 1984 growing season) was also lower than reported values for eastern fir, but not to the extent demonstrated for red spruce. Fraser fir needles had higher concentrations of Al than red spruce (310vs 91 mg kg?1, respectively, 1984 growing season), but both values are higher than those reported for spruce or fir from the northeastern United States. Calcium:aluminum ratios in current foliage are the lowest yet reported for the eastern spruce/fir forest type, suggesting that Al toxicity and/or Ca deficiency may be important stresses in these stands. Comparison of Pb concentrations with those of other rare-earth elements known to be associated with dust on needle surfaces (Ce, La, Sc, Sm, and Th) suggested that a substantial portion of the Pb found was due to particulates on the needle surfaces. The significance of these results to the observed forest decline syndrome in high elevation forests of the eastern United States is also discussed.  相似文献

Scarcity of red spruce (Picea rubens Sarg.) seedlings in declining spruce-fir forests of Camels Hump mountain, Vermont, prompted a study on some contributing factors involved in failure of spruce regeneration. Cones were shorter than those from low elevation red spruce trees from unaffected sites. Seed number in cones collected in declining areas of Camels Hump was low as were seed sizes and weights. Seed germination was at control levels only in good seed years. Capacity of seeds to form seedlings was reduced relative to that of controls, although seedling growth was normal. Coniferous litter contains presumed allelopathic substances leachable by contemporary precipitations that affect seed germination and seedling root development in red spruce, but not in balsam fir. Shield fern contains leachable substances that reduce seed germination and seedling root development in red spruce, but not balsam fir. Roots of red spruce germlings have lower capacity to penetrate through the increased forest duff depths of declining forests than do balsam fir roots. It is anticipated that substantial reproduction of red spruce will not occur in declining montane conifer forests under present conditions.  相似文献

Two new species of plant parasitic nematodes (Tylenchorhynchus quaidi n. sp. and T. tritici n. sp.) from Pakistan are described and illustrated. Tylenchorhynchus quaidi n. sp., from soil around roots of potato (Solanum tuberosum) from an experimental field of NNRC, Karachi, Pakistan, is distinguishable from other species by its peculiar sunken dome-shaped head. Although similar to T. goffarti, it differs by head shape, areolation of lateral field, ratios a (23-28 vs. 29-37) and c (11-14 vs. 13-20), and a vagina that is half sclerotized and half unsclerotized. Tylenchorhynchus tritici n. sp., from soil around roots of wheat (Triticum aestivum) from Campbellpur, Pakistan, is similar to T. ventrosignatus and T. nordiensis. It differs from T. ventrosignatus by a continuous lip region, number of head annules (2-3 vs. 4), coarse body annulation, absence of a wave-like structure near the vulva, and by tail shape and number of tail annules (15-23 vs. 28-32). It differs from T. nordiensis by stylet length (12.4-14.6 vs. 11-13 μm), shape of stylet knobs, number of head annules (2-3 vs. 4), non-areolated lateral field in region of phasmids, and not fusing in posterior third of tail. Morphometrics of Tylenchorhynchus claytoni from soil around stunted maize (Zea mays L.), in Muscatine County, Iowa, and several other populations are given. Detailed morphometric data on T. claytoni based on topotypes collected from type locality and several other populations revealed that this species shows variations in the shape of tail in females, number of tail annules (and sometimes annules extending further back on the terminus, almost being an annulated terminus), position of phasmid, and shape of lip region. The subgenus Bitylenchus is proposed as a new synonym of Tylenchorhynchus and its species referred to the latter genus.  相似文献

Balsam fir (Abies balsamea) and black spruce (Picea mariana) forests are the main conifer forest types in the North American boreal zone. The coexistence of the two species as well as their respective canopy dominance in distinct stands raises questions about the long-term evolution from one forest type to the other in relation to environmental factors including climate and stand disturbance. We tested the hypothesis that repetitive fire events promote the succession of balsam fir forest to black spruce forest and vice versa. Postfire chronosequences of one black spruce (BSP) and one balsam fir (BFI) sites were reconstructed based on the botanical composition and 14C-dated soil macrocharcoals. The results support the hypothesis of a successional dynamics. The BSP site has been affected by fires for the last 7600 years, whereas the BFI site, after having been impacted by several fires during the first half of the Holocene, evolved in a fire-free environment for the last 4400 years. Periods of fire activity facilitated the dominance of black spruce forests. The cessation of fires around 4400 cal. years BP on BFI site marks the beginning of the transition from black spruce to balsam fir stands. This succession is a long process, due to the ability of black spruce to regenerate by layering in the absence of fire. The resulting balsam fir stands are ancient and precarious ecosystems, since fire generally leads to the return of black spruce. The increase in balsam fir to the detriment of black spruce in boreal forests is a response to a decrease in fire frequency.  相似文献

The relationship between monthly climate predictors and radial growth of Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmanni Parry) and subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa (Hook.) Nutt) were explored using both a standard dendroclimatological approach and a multiple adaptive regressions splines (MARS) framework. Consistent with previous research, the radial growth of fir and spruce was related to temperature variables over the time period of the instrumental record. We identify important temporal instability in the statistical relationships between climate variables and the radial growth of both subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce. Using a 30-year running window, only four of the climate variables related to the radial growth of either spruce or fir did not show a switch in the sign of the correlation. A multiple adaptive regressions spline method was then used to gain insight into thresholds that may relate to radial growth–climate instabilities. Using MARS, we were able to identify knots and non-monotonic relationships between radial growth and climate predictors that may be indicators of ecological thresholds. This combination of dendroclimatic methods provides valuable insight into the complex nonlinear responses that both subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce have been growing under in the past centuries.  相似文献

On a few occasions, soybeans with broken root tips were included in tests to evaluate resistance to Heterodera glycines. Although females developed on these plants, the numbers tended to be lower than on similarly treated intact roots. To test the possibility that removal of the root meristem affected nematode development, a culture system using pruned soybeans was devised that permitted access to the roots without disturbing the plants. Treatments included removal of 2 mm of root tip at various times ranging from 24 hours before to 10 days after inoculation, or roots left intact. In each experiment, all roots were inoculated at the same time with equal numbers of freshly hatched second-stage juveniles of Heterodera glycines. No differences in nematode development were detected in plants with root tips removed after inoculation compared to the control. When tips were removed at or before inoculation, fewer juveniles entered roots and relatively fewer nematodes developed. Penetration levels and development correlated with root tip removal such that progressively fewer nematodes entered roots and relatively greater numbers of nematodes remained undeveloped as the time interval between root tip removal and inoculation was increased.  相似文献

In ectomycorrhizae, the relative abilities of mycobiont and host plant to take up and store inorganic nutrients are not easily determined due to the intimate physical relationship of the two components forming the association. Since compartmental analysis of solute elution can estimate cellular compartment pool sizes and unidirectional fluxes across membranes, we have used this method to study ectomycorrhizal coniferous roots. Rubidium-86, used as a tracer for potassium, was loaded into and eluted from intact roots of nonmycorrhizal and mycorrhizal (with the fungus Hebeloma crustuliniformme [Bull.: St. Amans Quél] Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco), western hemlock (Tsuga heterophylla [Raf.] Sarg.) and Sitka spruce (Picea sitchensis [Bong.] Carr.) seedlings.

Mycorrhizas significantly increased 86Rb uptake rates while decreasing the amount of 86Rb released to the external solution. Using compartmental analysis, the flux data suggest that the primary mycorrhizal effects were to increase inward potassium fluxes across the fungal tonoplast and to decrease potassium efflux across the fungal tonoplast, as compared with nonmycorrhizal seedling roots. The result was greater potassium storage, presumably in the fungal vacuole. The three coniferous species responded differently to fungal infection with respect to potassium fluxes. Both cytoplasmic and vacuolar fluxes for mycorrhizal hemlock were 2-fold greater than for spruce and 3-fold greater than for Douglas fir. These results demonstrate the usefulness of compartmental analysis for study of ion fluxes in intact mycorrhizal root systems and suggest that the fungal tonoplast may be the site for regulation of potassium fluxes in these coniferous roots.

Elimination of Paratylenchus neoamblvcephalus from soil by fumigation with 1,2-dibromoethane stimulated the growth of Myrobalan seedlings grown in it. Addition of a suspension of P. neoamblycephalus to Myrobalan seedlings inhibited their growth as compared to noninoculated controls. When nematodes were removed from the suspension by settling, and the supernatant liquid was used as inoculum, no stunting occurred. Roots of Myrobalan seedlings inoculated with surface-sterilized P. neoamblycephalus were smaller, darker, and had fewer feeder roots than those of noninoculated controls. Nematodes were observed feeding ectoparasitically, but with heads embedded in roots as deep as the cortex. They were associated with small lesions and dead lateral roots. Clusters of nematodes were common at ruptures in the epidermis, and where lateral roots emerged. Limitation of Myrobalan growth by P. neoamblvcephalus was greater at 20 and 27 C than at 30 C, and was not affected by pH over the range 4.5 to 6.5. Rose, apricot, peach, and all selections and hybrids of Prunus cerasffera tested were hosts for P. neoamblrcephalus. The nematode could not be cultured on various herbaceous plants nor on Myrobalan callus tissue.  相似文献

A nematode isolated from the termite Reticulitermes flavipes (Koller) was identified and described as a new genus and species, Neosteinernema longicurvicauda. Primary distinguishing characters, by contrast to members of the genus Steinernema, were females having prominent phasmids, a curved tail longer than the body width at the anus, a spiral shape in juvenile-bearing females, and juveniles becoming infective-stage juveniles before emerging from the female; males having prominent phasmids, a digitate tail tip, a characteristic shape of the spicules (foot-shaped with a hump on the dorsal side), and 13-14 pairs of genital papillae, with eight pairs preanal; and infective juveniles having prominent phasmids and a filiform curved tail as long as the esophagus. Adult nematodes are found outside the termite cadaver. Diagnosis of the family Steinernematidae was emended to accommodate the new species.  相似文献

The closely related soybean (Glycine max) cultivars Centennial and Pickett 71 were confirmed to be resistant and susceptible, respectively, to the root-knot nematode Meloidogryne incognita. Increases in superoxide dismutase (SOD) activity were detected in roots of both soybean cultivars 48 hours following inoculation. Superoxide dismutase activity increased in roots of the susceptible cultivar overall, but declined after 96 hours in roots of the resistant cultivar. The isoelectric points of SOD isolated from preparasitic and parasitic developmental stages of the nematode appeared to differ. The SOD activity increased dramatically as nematodes matured and enlarged. Plant and nematode SOD were present as ca. 40-kDa cuprozinc dimers. Initial increases in SOD activity in infected tissue appeared to involve nematode regulation of plant gene expression. However, as the nematode enlarged, SOD activity could be detected within the female body only.  相似文献

The influence of plant resistance on the size of individual root-knot nematodes was determined in greenhouse experiments. Five genotypes of alyceclover were inoculated with second-stage juveniles of Meloidogyne incognita race 3 or M. arenaria race 1. Plants were harvested at selected intervals and stained for detection of the nematodes, which were dissected from the roots. Length, width, and sagittal-sectional area of each animal were measured using an image-analysis system, and areas of nematodes in all stages were compared at different times and across alyceclover lines. Nematodes feeding on roots of resistant lines were consistently smaller than those on susceptible plants, with significant differences in growth detected after the final molt. Similar results were observed with both nematode species.  相似文献

Penetration of bean roots by Pratylenchus vulnus was inhibited by continuous exposure of the nematode to carbofuran and phenamiphos and by drenches of higher concentrations of these chemicals. The inhibition was explicable by inhibition of motility, dispersion, and attraction. If incubated in aerated distilled water, nematodes treated with carbofuran and phenamiphos recovered and reproduced as well as untreated nematodes. Foliar treatments were ineffective. Apparently, no basipetal transport of carbofuran and phenamiphos occurs in beans. Both nematicides arrested nematode development by interfering with egg production and transitions between life stages.  相似文献

The relative reflectance spectra for control and treated (surface wiped) current-year foliage of Douglas fir, and Sitka, Colorado, and Blue spruce (Pseudotsuga menziesii [Mirb.] Franco, Picea sitchensis [Bong.] Carr., Picea pungens Engelm., and Picea pungens Engelm. var. hoopsii, respectively) were obtained from 220 to 700 nm. The green color of the control foliage of both Douglas fir and Sitka spruce was unaffected by the treatment whereas the blue-green and blue-white foliage of control Colorado and Blue spruce, respectively, became “green” as a result of the wiping. The relative reflectance curves for all green foliage, including the treated Colorado and Blue spruce, were all very similar with a peak in the green (540-560 nm), minima in the red (660-680 nm) and blue (450-500 nm), and very low reflectivities in the ultraviolet (λ < 400 nm). In contrast, the control foliage for Colorado and Blue spruce both showed a generally higher relative reflectance over most of the visible spectrum (400-700 nm) with a marked increase in the blue region (400-500 nm). At wavelengths below 420 nm, their relative reflectances increased sharply with decreasing wavelength, the reflectance at 220 nm for Blue spruce being over four times that at 540 nm.  相似文献
