The subject of this paper is polymorphism maintenance due to stabilizing selection with a moving optimum. It was shown that in case of two-locus additive control of the selected trait, global polymorphism is possible only when the geometric mean fitnesses of double homozygotes averaged over the period are lower than that of the single heterozygotes and of the double heterozygote (with a multiplier [1 – r]p, which depends on recombination rate r and period length p). But local stability of polymorphism cannot be excluded even if geometric mean fitnesses of all double homozygotes are higher than that of all heterozygotes. We proved, that for logarithmically convex fitness functions, cyclical changes of the optimum cannot help in polymorphism maintenance in case of additive control of the selected trait by two equal loci. However, within the same class of fitness functions, nonequal gene action and/or dominance effect for one or both loci may lead to local polymorphism stability with large enough polymorphism attracting domain. The higher the intensity of selection and closer the linkage between selected loci the larger is this domain. Note that even simple cyclical selection could result in two forms of polymorphic limiting behavior: (a) usually expected forced cycle with a period equal to that of environmental changes; and (b) “supercycles,” nondumping auto-oscillations with a period comprising of hundreds of forced oscillation periods.  相似文献

The major histocompatibility complex (MHC) contains the most variable genes in vertebrates, but despite extensive research, the mechanisms maintaining this polymorphism are still unresolved. One hypothesis is that MHC polymorphism is a result of balancing selection operating by overdominance, but convincing evidence for overdominant selection in natural populations has been lacking. We present strong evidence consistent with MHC-specific overdominance in a free-living population of Arctic charr (Salvelinus alpinus) in northernmost Europe. In this population, where just two MHC alleles were observed, MHC heterozygous fish had a lower parasite load, were in better condition (as estimated by a fatness indicator) and had higher survival under stress than either of the homozygotes. Conversely, there was no consistent association between these fitness measures and assumedly neutral microsatellite variability, indicating an MHC-specific effect. Our results provide convincing empirical evidence consistent with the notion that overdominance can be an important evolutionary mechanism contributing to MHC polymorphism in wild animal populations. They also support a recent simulation study indicating that the number of alleles expected to be maintained at an MHC loci can be low, even under strong heterozygote advantage.  相似文献

A natural population of a tropical midge, Chironomus ramosus (Diptera: Chironomidae), was found to be polymorphic for a paracentric inversion (IV: 18C-19D). Based on the characteristic banding pattern of the fourth chromosome in the larval salivary gland polytene nuclei, individuals were classified as either structural homozygotes or heterozygotes. Isofemale lines were obtained and subsequently standard (S/S) and inversion (I/I) homozygotes were characterised by careful progeny testing in the laboratory. While exploring various biotic and abiotic factors that might be responsible for the maintenance of inversion polymorphism, we detected nematode (Family: Mermithidae) infections among the larval population. A detailed study indicated that the inversion polymorphism in the natural population of C. ramosus was apparently being maintained as a result of the selective pressure exerted by the nematode parasite. The corresponding pattern of increase and decrease in genotype frequencies and the relative fitness values indicated a selective advantage of inversion heterozygotes (S/I) over both homozygous types (S/S and I/I). Both empirical and experimental data suggest the strong heterotic nature of adaptation in this C. ramosus population towards nematode infection. This is the first report of its kind where inversion polymorphism has been shown to be associated with nematode parasitism.  相似文献

A two-allele diploid model is described in which the fitnesses of the three genotypes are stationary stochastic processes. It is shown that a stable polymorphism will occur if the geometric mean fitness of the heterozygote exceeds that of both homozygotes. It is possible for the mean fitness of the population to be lower in polymorphic than in the associated monomorphic populations.  相似文献

The importance of adult mating success as a component of fitness influencing inversion polymorphism in two DDT-resistant populations of Drosophila melanogaster was investigated. The polymorphism involved In(3R)P and the Standard (St) gene arrangement. In population 731R the St/St females showed greater mating propensity than In/In females, while in population J2 the In/In females showed a significant positive association between mating propensity and the percentage of St/St males present. Mating preference data showed that St/St males were selectively favored over In/In males in both populations. No differences were observed between St/St and St/In karyotypes in either population. Frequency-dependent mating in the form of a rare male mating disadvantage for the In/In males tested against the St/St males in 731R was observed; the St/St males in this case showed a marginally significant rare male mating advantage. Thus, mating success as well as previously measured fecundity and fertility all indicate a selective advantage of the St chromosome over the In chromosome in both populations. This fitness relationship does not predict the equilibrium condition of 70–80% St/In, 20–30% In/In, and 0–10% St/St found in the DDT environment, whereas previously collected larval viability data and estimated adult survivorship do. In at least one population (731R), the adult mating success data do predict the dynamics of the polymorphism in the absence of DDT, whereas viability does not. These results, although limited to two populations under two environments (presence or absence of DDT), suggest that the relationship between adaptation to the environment under study and various components of fitness needs to be investigated fully before assessing which fitness components are most important in determining the effects of natural selection in specific populations.  相似文献

Positive correlations between measures of “fitness” and the number of electrophoretic loci for which an individual is heterozygous have been observed in many species. Two major hypotheses have been proposed to explain this phenomenon: inbreeding depression and overdominance. Until recently, there has been no way to distinguish between these hypotheses. The overdominance model devised by Smouse (1986) is used here in a reanalysis of Ledig et al.‘s (1983) study of heterozygosity and growth rate in eight populations of pitch pine and is contrasted with an inbreeding-depression analysis. Ledig et al. (1983) regressed mean growth rate per heterozygosity class on the number of heterozygous loci, a method of analysis which, although it points to general trends in the data, does not differentiate between hypotheses. The correlations they obtained in four populations were significant only because regressing on the means eliminates most of the sum of squares for error and does not weight the unequally sized heterozygosity classes. Reanalysis of Ledig et al.‘s data using individuals, not means, showed no significant correlations between heterozygosity and fitness. A major assumption of Smouse's overdominance model is that genetic polymorphism is in part a reflection of selection for heterozygotes at genetic equlibrium. The homozygote for the most frequent allele at a locus should be more fit than a homozygote for a less frequent allele, with the heterozygote superior to both homozygotes. Smouse's model predicts a negative, linear relationship between fitness and “adaptive distance,” a variable that for a heterozygote is zero and for homozygotes is equal to the inverse of the frequency of the corresponding allele. The adaptive-distance model accounted for between 15% and 50% of the variation in growth rate within eight P. rigida population samples by accounting for genotypic differences at eight polymorphic loci. This is over twice as much of the variation in growth rate accounted for by Ledig et al.'s (1983) analysis using individuals. Significant correlations were found between adaptive distance and growth rate in four of the eight populations, but in only two of the populations were more of the partial coefficients negative than positive, as would be predicted by the overdominance hypothesis. The remaining two populations in which correlations were significant did not lend themselves to such clear-cut interpretation, as the majority of the partial coefficients were positive. Positive partial coefficients indicate that the growth rate of the heterozygote is inferior to that of at least one of the homozygotes. The adaptive-distance analysis provides evidence that specific genotypes do play a role in determining growth rate in pitch pine. The correlation between growth rate and adaptive distance increased significantly with the age of the population, possibly reflecting competition subsequent to crown closure.  相似文献

Predictions for the use of autosomal translocations for pest control have been made on the assumptions that translocation heterozygotes are semi-sterile and translocation homozygotes are fully fertile and have viabilities which are either equal to or slightly less than that of the wild type. These parameters were assessed in controlled crosses using a translocation in Drosophila and they showed good agreement with expectation. It was expected that in a mixed population of such translocations and wild types, the karyotype at the higher frequency would be favoured by selection. Two cage experiments were initiated with mixed populations of translocation homozygotes and wild types at a frequency of 9:1 in favour of the translocation. Contrary to expectation, the translocation was eliminated from both populations. During this process, there was a reduction in population fertility. Computer studies showed that the results were consistent with a reduction in fitness of the translocation homozygote to about 0.5, i.e. about the same as the semi-sterile heterozygote, so that negative heterosis did not exist and hence frequency dependent selection could not occur.  相似文献

InArabidopsis thaliana the relative measure of Darwinian fitness — the adaptive values of the two homozygotes related to the reference heterozygous genotype in one locus system were estimated on the original and on three changed genetic backgrounds. It was stated that the change of the genetic background with different gene-modifiers of the pleiotropic effect of a given gene on fitness may be important for the existence of mutations in populations, especially if we take into consideration not only the selection pressure against the homozygotes but also a certain real percentage of outcrossing. Special attention is paid to statistical elaboration of the experimental data.  相似文献

We describe two models of stochastic variation in selection intensity. In both models the arithmetic mean fitness of all genotypes is equal; in both models the geometric mean fitness of the heterozygous genotype is greater than that of both homozygous genotypes. In one model the correlation between the fitnesses of the homozygous genotypes is +1; in the other it is −1. We show that the expected time to absorption of an allele in a finite population is significantly retarded for all initial gene frequencies in the former model. The expected time to absorption of an allele in the latter model is retarded only at extreme initial gene frequencies; at intermediate initial gene frequencies the expected time to absorption is accelerated. We conclude that the criterion for polymorphism based on the geometric mean of the heterozygote being greater than that of both homozygotes provides only limited information about the fate of gene frequency.  相似文献

Summary The polymorphism affecting codon 4311 of the apolipoprotein B gene (ApoB/4311) was investigated in a large case-control study in two French and one Northern Irish geographically defined populations. Cases were recruited 3 to 9 months after a myocardial infarction (MI) and controls were randomly selected from the population. The polymorphism was assessed using allele-specific oligonucleotides (ASO). The genotype frequencies of the ApoB/4311 polymorphism did not differ in Northern Ireland and France and were in Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium in all groups; strong associations with three other polymorphisms of the ApoB gene (XbaI, EcoRI, VNTR(34 repeats)) were observed and it was possible to identify highly sensitive and specific markers of the ApoB/4311 rare variant. Homozygotes for the ApoB 4311 rare variant were slightly less frequent in cases than in controls: 22 (4.4%) and 35 (6.7%) respectively (population adjusted 2=3.3 P<0.07), especially in Belfast: 6 (3.1%) and 12 (7.6%), respectively (P<0.06). Several lipid and lipoprotein parameters were measured. Consistently among control groups, rare homozygotes had lower mean levels of ApoB (P<0.02), triglycerides (P<0.02), and lipoprotein particles containing ApoE and ApoB (LpE:B; P<0.001) and a higher mean level of lipoprotein particles containing ApoAI and not ApoAII (LpAI; P<0.02) than heterozygotes and frequent homozygotes combined. The strong association between the ApoB/4311 polymorphism and LpE:B was also observed in patients with MI. When present in the homozygous form, the ApoB/ 4311 AsnSer variant is associated with a lipoprotein profile that is apparently favourable.  相似文献

Polymorphisms in the dopamine receptor D4 gene (DRD4) have been related to individual variation in novelty‐seeking or exploratory behaviour in a variety of animals, including humans. Recently, the human DRD4 orthologue was sequenced in a wild bird, the great tit (Parus major) and a single nucleotide polymorphism in exon 3 of this gene (SNP830) was shown to be associated with variation in exploratory behaviour of lab‐raised individuals originating from a single wild population. Here we test the generality of this finding in a large sample of free‐living individuals from four European great tit populations, including the originally sampled population. We demonstrate that the association between SNP830 genotype and exploratory behaviour also exists in free‐living birds from the original population. However, in the other three populations we found only limited evidence for an association: in two populations the association appeared absent; while in one there was a nonsignificant tendency. We could not confirm a previously demonstrated interaction with another DRD4 polymorphism, a 15 bp indel in the promoter region (ID15). As yet unknown differences in genetic or environmental background could explain why the same genetic polymorphism (SNP830) has a substantial effect on exploratory behaviour in one population, explaining 4.5–5.8% of the total variance—a large effect for a single gene influencing a complex behavioural trait—but not in three others. The confirmation of an association between SNP830 genotype and personality‐related behaviour in a wild bird population warrants further research into potential fitness effects of the polymorphism, while also the population differences in the strength of the association deserve further investigation. Another important future challenge is the identification of additional loci influencing avian personality traits in the wild.  相似文献

Variation in flower color, particularly polymorphism, in which two or more different flower color phenotypes occur in the same population or species, may be affected or maintained by mechanisms that depend on pollinators. Furthermore, variation in floral display may affect pollinator response and plant reproductive success through changes in pollinator visitation and availability of compatible pollen. To asses if flower color polymorphism and floral display influences pollinator preferences and movements within and among plants and fitness-related variables we used the self-incompatible species Cosmos bipinnatus Cav. (Asteraceae), a model system with single-locus flower color polymorphism that comprises three morphs: white (recessive homozygous), pink (heterozygous co-dominate), and purple (dominant homozygous) flowers. We measured the preferences of pollinators for each morph and constancy index for each pollinator species, pollination visitation rate, floral traits, and female fitness measures. Flower color morphs differed in floral trait measures and seed production. Pollinators foraged nonrandomly with respect to flower color. The most frequent morph, the pink morph, was the most visited and pollinators exhibited the highest constancy for this morph. Moreover, this morph exhibited the highest female fitness. Pollinators responded strongly to floral display size, while probed more capitulums from plants with large total display sizes, they left a great proportion of them unvisited. Furthermore, total pollinator visitation showed a positive relation with female fitness. Results suggest that although pollinators preferred the heterozygous morph, they alternate indiscriminately among morphs making this polymorphism stable.  相似文献

Characterizing inbreeding depression in wildlife populations can be critical to their conservation. Coefficients of individual inbreeding can be estimated from genome‐wide marker data. The degree to which sensitivity of inbreeding coefficients to population genetic substructure alters estimates of inbreeding depression in wild populations is not well understood. Using generalized linear models, we tested the power of two frequently used inbreeding coefficients that are calculated from genome‐wide SNP markers, FH and F^III, to predict four fitness traits estimated over two decades in an isolated population of the critically endangered Leadbeater's possum. FH estimates inbreeding as excess observed homozygotes relative to equilibrium expectations, whereas F^III quantifies allelic similarity between the gametes that formed an individual, and upweights rare homozygotes. We estimated FH and F^III from 1,575 genome‐wide SNP loci in individuals with fitness trait data (N = 179–237 per trait), and computed revised coefficients, FHby group and F^IIIby group, adjusted for population genetic substructure by calculating them separately within two different genetic groups of individuals identified in the population. Using FH or F^III in the models, inbreeding depression was detected for survival to sexual maturity, longevity and whether individuals bred during their lifetime. F^IIIby group (but not FHby group) additionally revealed significant inbreeding depression for lifetime reproductive output (total offspring assigned to each individual). Estimates of numbers of lethal equivalents indicated substantial inbreeding load, but differing between inbreeding estimators. Inbreeding depression, declining population size, and low and declining genetic diversity suggest that genetic rescue may assist in preventing extinction of this unique Leadbeater's possum population.  相似文献

Endothelial NO-synthase (eNOS) gene allelic polymorphism in 221 patients with acute coronary syndrome and in 83 practically healthy people was determined. It was shown that interrelations of normal homozygotes, heterozygotes and pathologic homozygotes in T/C promoter polymorphism analysis accout 48%, 36% and 16% correspondingly (in control--48%, 46%, 6%; P < 0.05 by chi2-test); in G894 --> T polymorphism ofexon 7 analysis--34%, 58%, 8% (in control--29%, 67%, 4%; P > 0.05), and in determination of 4a/4b polymorphism of intron 4--64.5%, 31% and 4.5% (in control--62.5%, 32.5%, 5%; P > 0.05). Obtained data show that eNOS C/C promoter variant is a risk factor of acute coronary syndrome in Ukrainian population.  相似文献

A chromosomal centric fusion polymorphism in populations of the plains pocket gopher, Geomys bursarius, was studied to determine the relative fitness associated with the karyotypic phenotypes. There was a greater number of heterozygous individuals than expected χ1 2=8.58, P=0.001. Calculations indicate that the viabilities of the two chromosomal homozygotes were only 35 and 76 percent or that of the heterozygote. Differences in fitness values for the chromosomal morphs for Geomys strongly emphasize the possible adaptive nature of the karyotype and provides a primary mechanism for chromosomal evolution, even in species composed of demes of relatively large size. This is the first case of positive chromosomal heterosis in vertebrates. The plains pocket gopher can now be added to the few empirically documented samples of balanced polymorphism.  相似文献

RANKINEN, T., JACQUES GAGNON, LOUIS PÉRUSSE, TREVA RICE, ARTHUR s. LEON, JAMES s. SKINNER, JACK H. WILMORE, D. C. RAO, AND CLAUDE BOUCHARD. Body fat, resting and exercise blood pressure and the angiotensinogen M235T polymorphism: the Heritage family study. Obes Res. Objective: The association of resting and exercise blood pressure (BP) and fat mass with the angiotensinogen (AGT) M235T polymorphism was investigated in 522 sedentary Caucasian subjects from 99 families. Research Methods and Procedures: Resting BP was measured on two separate days, three times each day, and the mean of six valid measurements was used. Exercise BP was measured during a cycle ergometer test at a constant power output (50 W). Body composition was derived from underwater weighing and the AGT M235T polymorphism was typed with a polymerase chain reaction-based method. Results: Neither resting nor exercise BP was associated with the AGT genotypes. In mothers, the homozygotes for the T allele showed 8. 8 kg and 7. 1 kg greater (p = 0. 017) age-adjusted body fat mass (FM) than the MM homozygotes and heterozygotes, respectively. Sixty-nine percent of all TT homozygotes were found in the highest FM tertile, whereas only 16% of the MM homozygotes fell in the same tertile (p = 0. 008). Moreover, a significant interaction was seen between FM and T-allele carrier status in women with regard to resting diastolic BP (p = 0. 002). Among women with a FM≥24 kg, carriers of the T allele showed a 6. 3 mmHg higher diastolic blood pressure (DBP) than non-carriers whereas no difference was found in women with a FM less than 24 kg. A similar trend toward an interaction term was evident with resting systolic blood pressure (p = 0. 011) and exercise DBP (p = 0. 012). Body fat was not associated with the AGT polymorphism in fathers or in offspring. Discussion: These data suggest that the AGT M235T polymorphism is associated with body fatness in women, and that the relationship between DBP and AGT M235T polymorphism is dependent on FM in middle-aged sedentary normotensive women.  相似文献

The adaptive significance of the chromosomal polymorphism of Drosophila buzzati has been studied by means of fitness component analysis in an original population from Argentina. The results show evidence of selection acting through pupal viability, longevity (adult viability) and fecundity on the second chromosome polymorphism, and through pupal viability and virility on the fourth chromosome polymorphism. Changes in chromosomal inversion frequencies throughout the life-cycle suggested an endocyclic pattern of directional selection, which at first seems to be the only detectable mechanism responsible for the maintenance of the polymorphism. However, slow, long-term frequency changes cannot be ruled out. The way in which endocyclic selection acts on this population is different from that in a colonized population previously studied; that is, different fitness components are involved in the maintenance of chromosomal polymorphism. The possible factors that may explain these differences are discussed.  相似文献

SDF-1 has been demonstrated to be involved in the pathophysiology of atherosclerosis. This study was aimed to investigate whether the SDF1-3′A polymorphism (rs1801157) is associated to myocardial infarction (MI) in a sample of Chinese Han population. A total of 560 patients with MI and 532 controls were enrolled in the study. The SDF1-3′A polymorphism was determined by polymerase chain reaction -restriction fragment length polymorphism (PCR-RFLP) analysis. A significant difference in genotype distribution and allele frequency was observed between patients and controls (P = 0.003 and P = 0.001, respectively). The A allele carriers had a significantly reduced MI risk compared with the GG homozygotes (OR, 0.69; 95% CI, 0.52–0.92; adjusted P = 0.007) in a logistic regression model after controlling conventional risk factors. The present study showed a significant association between the SDF1-3A polymorphism and MI in Chinese Han population.  相似文献

We demonstrate how a genetic polymorphism of distinctly different alleles can develop during long-term frequency-dependent evolution in an initially monomorphic diploid population, if mutations have only small phenotypic effect. As a specific example, we use a version of Levene's (1953) soft selection model, where stabilizing selection acts on a continuous trait within each of two habitats. If the optimal phenotypes within the habitats are sufficiently different, then two distinctly different alleles evolve gradually from a single ancestral allele. In a wide range of parameter values, the two locally optimal phenotypes will be realized by one of the homozygotes and the heterozygote, rather than by the two homozygotes. Unlike in the haploid analogue of the model, there can be multiple polymorphic evolutionary attractors with different probabilities of convergence. Our results differ from the population genetic models of short-term evolution in two aspects: (1) a polymorphism that is population genetically stable may be invaded by a new mutant allele and, as a consequence, the population may fall back to monomorphism, (2) long-term evolution by allele substitutions may lead from a population where polymorphism is not possible into one where polymorphism is possible.  相似文献

Recent work has suggested that the outcomes of host–symbiont interactions can shift between positive, neutral and negative depending on both biotic and abiotic conditions. Even organisms traditionally defined as parasites can have positive effects on hosts under some conditions. For a given host–parasite system, the effects of infection on host fitness can depend on host vigour, route of transmission and environmental conditions. We monitored sublethal microsporidian infections in populations of Gammarus pseudolimnaeus (Amphipoda: Gammaridae) from four cool water streams in southwestern Michigan, USA. Our objectives were to: (i) infer the mechanism of transmission (horizontal, vertical or mixed) from observed effects of infection on host fitness, (ii) determine if the magnitude of the effects on host fitness is a function of parasite load (infection intensity) compared with simple presence or absence of infection, and (iii) determine if there is variation in parasite effects on host fitness in isolated populations. PCR and DNA sequence analyses revealed that there were two microsporidia present among the four host populations: Dictyocoela sp. and Microsporidium sp. PCR screening of a subset of infected hosts showed that Dictyocoela sp. accounted for 90% of infections and was present in all four G. pseudolimnaeus populations, while Microsporidium sp. was found in two populations but was only relatively common in one. We found very low prevalence in males (∼5%), but high prevalence in females (range: 37–85%). Female fitness was positively associated with infection in two streams, resulting from either higher fecundity or more reproductive bouts. Infection had a negative effect on the number of reproductive bouts in a third population, and no effect on fecundity in a fourth population. Infection intensity explained additional variation in fecundity in one population; females with intermediate infection intensity had higher fecundity than females with either light or heavy infection intensity. Given the high prevalence of infection in females compared with males and the generally weak negative fitness effects coupled with some positive fitness effects, it is likely that both Dictyocoela sp. and Microsporidium sp. are primarily vertically transmitted, feminizing microsporidia. Our results suggest that microsporidian effects on G. pseudolimnaeus fitness were context-dependent and varied with host sex and local environment.  相似文献
