1 Metabolic rates (Vo2), body temperature (Tb), and thermal conductance (C) were first determined in newly captured Maximowiczi's voles (Microtus maximowiczii) and Djungarian hamsters (Phodopus campbelli) from the Inner Mongolian grasslands at a temperature range from 5 to 35 °C.

2 The thermal neutral zone (TNZ) was between 25 and 32.5 °C for Maximowiczi's voles and between 25 and 30 °C for Djungarian hamsters. Mean Tb was 37.0±0.1 °C for voles and 36.2±0.1 °C for hamsters. Minimum thermal conductance was 0.172±0.004 ml O2/g h °C for voles and 0.148±0.003 ml O2/g h °C for hamsters.

3 The mean resting metabolic rate within TNZ was 2.21±0.05 ml O2/g h in voles and 2.01±0.07 ml O2/g h in hamsters. Nonshivering thermogenesis was 5.36±0.30 ml O2/g h for voles and 6.30±0.18 ml O2/g h for hamsters.

4 All these thermal physiological properties are adaptive for each species and are shaped by both macroenvironmental and microenvironmental conditions, food habits, phylogeny and other factors.

1. 1.|Resistance to cold through non-shivering thermogenesis (the absolute increase in O2 consumption caused by noradrenaline injection) was increased 3-fold in individuals of the broad-toothed mouse A. mystacinus, kept for 3 weeks under a short photoperiod (long scotophase 8L:16D) at an ambient temperature of 28°C, compared to control conditions (12L:12D; 28°C), and did not differ significantly from the winter-acclimatized group.

2. 2.|Acclimation of the same individuals to long scotophase and cold (8L:16d; 7°C) caused a significant (P < 0.01) increase in absolute O2 consumption and maximal body temperature, as a response to noradrenaline injectin, when compared to long-scotophase individuals (8L:16D; 28°C).

3. 3.|The results of this study support the idea that winter acclimatization of heat-production mechanisims may be induced by the extension of scotophase, which cycles very regulary in nature and in the Mediterranean region occurs before the beginning of the cold season.

1. 1. The naked mole-rat (Heterocephalus glaber) is a poikilothermic mammal. During gestation metabolic shifts that differ from both mammalian and reptilian thermoregulatory patterns occurred.

2. 2. Body temperature was directly dependent on ambient temperature. At low ambient temperatures the temperature differential (TbTa) was approximately 3°C, whereas at higher ambient temperatures the temperature differential diminished.

3. 3. In early pregnancy (prior to week 3) oxygen consumption at low ambient temperatures was greater than that of non-reproductive animals. A maximal metabolic rate (3.2 ± 1.0 ml O2 . g−1 . h−1) occurred at an ambient temperature of 27°C. Thereafter the endothermic pattern of metabolism with increasing ambient temperatures was evident. Oxygen consumption decreased with increasing ambient temperature to minimal rates of 1.2 ± 0.1 ml O2 . g−1 . h−1 over the ambient temperature range of 31–34°C.

4. 4. Oxygen consumption in late pregnancy (1.8 ± 0.1 ml O2 . g−1 . h−1) was not correlated with ambient temperature over the entire ambient temperature range measured (24–36°C).

5. 5. Differences in thermoregulation in early and late pregnancy may be attributed to different rates of heat loss as a consequence of (a) changes in surface area and body mass or (b) vascular changes. Furthermore the thermoregulatory changes in late pregnancy may indicate that maximal overall metabolic capacity had been reached, for peak resting metabolism (expressed per animal rather than per gram body mass) in early pregnancy was similar to observed metabolism in late pregnancy.

6. 6. The dissociation of metabolism from both ambient temperature and body temperature in late pregnancy could confer an energetic advantage to this arid dwelling underground inhabitant; for it may enable the breeding female to partition a greater portion of available energy into reproduction.

1. 1.|Pyridostigmine administration decreased resting heart rate by 11 ± 7 beats/min and resting oesophageal temperature by 0.23 ± 12°C after 50 h (P < 0.05). In addition, red blood cell cholinesterase activity was decreased an average of 43 ± 7% after 50 h of pyridostigmine treatment.

2. 2.|The lower heart rates and core temperatures at rest were continued during high intensity exercise in a 35°C environment. Whole body sweating was 12 ± 18% higher (P = 0.20) during exercise in the heat after 50 h of pyridostigmine treatment.

3. 3.|Repeated anticholinesterase administration had little effect on cardiovascular and thermoregulatory responses during high intensity exercise.

1. 1. The calorigenic responses of 60-h fasted (F) and control (C) guinea pigs to E. coli endotoxin (5 μg·kg−1 i.v.) injection were compared at Ta = 25°C.

2. 2. In contrast to fed (C) guinea pigs, the F group showed significantly lower calorigenic response.

3. 3. The brown adipose tissue (BAT) thermogenesis judge by the BAT temperature did not change significantly. Shivering activity was not different from that in the C group.

4. 4. The results conclude that fasting attenuates endotoxin-induced fever and this attenuation is due to suppression of nonshivering thermogenesis (NST) in guinea pigs.

5. 5. The results from direct calorimetry indicate that endotoxin injection evoked a prominent increase in heat production, while the changes in heat loss do not have an important role.

1. 1. The response of oxygen consumption (VO2), thermal conductance (Cd and Cmin, body temperature (Tb), and evaporative water loss (EWL) of Tatera leucogaster and Desmodillus auricularis were measured over the range of ambient temperatures (Ta) from 5–35°C.

2. 2. Basal metabolic rate (BMR) of T. leucogaster was 0.841 ± 0.049 ml O2 g−1 h−1 and lower than predicted, while that of D. auricularis was similar to the expected value (1.220 ± 0.058 ml O2 g−1 h−1). D. auricularis had a high, narrow thermoneutral zone (TNZ) typical of nocturnal, xerophilic, burrowing rodents.

3. 3. D. auricularis and T. leucogaster regulated Tb over the range Ta = 5–35°C and kept EWL and dry thermal conductance at a minimum below the TNZ. However, the EWL of T. leucogaster increased rapidly above Ta = 30°C.

4. 4. After comparison with data from other species, it was concluded that there is an optimum size for xeric, nocturnal, burrowing rodents.

1. 1.|Oxygen consumption ( ) and body temperture (Tb) of Hawaiian brown noddies (Anous stolidus pileatus [Aves: Laridae]) during late incubation and in the first 24 h after hatching were measured at ambient temperatures (Ta) between 28 and 38°C and between 15 and 43°C, respectively. Evaporative cooling by hatchings at Ta of 36–43°C was also measured.

2. 2.|Throughout the late incubation stages studied, and Tb both varied directly with Ta in an ectothermic pattern.

3. 3.|The hatchlings successfully regulated Tb at Ta between ca. 29 and 43°C.

4. 4.|The functional basis of the abrupt increase in thermoregulatory capacity with hatching is discussed.

1. 1.|The effect of thyroidectomy at 12 days of age on weight gain, and on heat production and thermoregulatory ability of 4- to 5-week-old chickens at temperatures within and below the thermo-neutral zone was investigated.

2. 2.|Despit the absence of thyroid tissue, as demonstrated with radioiodine, a small amount of thyroxine was found in the plasma of some thyroidectomized (TX) birds.

3. 3.|Thyroidectomy depressed weight gain; pair-fed controls grew significantly faster than TX birds.

4. 4.|Resting heat production of TX birds at thermoneutrality (30°C) was depressed by 18% (P < 0.001) and body temperature by 0.4°C (P < 0.001).

5. 5.|At 12°C heat production of TX birds was similar to that of controls but the body temperature of TX birds was 0.7°C lower (P < 0.001).

6. 6.|Thyroidectomized birds were unable to regulate body temperature at 5°C even if thyroxine was provided on the day before and at the time of cold-exposure. This inability to thermoregulate was probably due to inadequate insulation and poor nutritional status.

1. 1.|Preferred ambient temperature (Ta) and ventilatory frequency were measured in free-moving hamsters exposed to 2450 MHz microwaves. A waveguide exposure system which permits continuous monitoring of the absorbed heat load accrued from microwave exposure was imposed with a longitudinal temperature gradient which allowed hamsters to select their preferred Ta. Ventillatory frequency was monitored remotely by analysing the rhythmic shifts in unabsorbed microwave energy passing down the waveguide.

2. 2.|Without microwave exposure hamsters selected an average Ta of 30.2°C. This preferred Ta did not change until the rate of heat absorption (SAR) from microwave exposure exceeded approx. 2 W kg−1. In a separate experiment, a SAR of 2.0 W kg−1 at a Ta of 30°C was shown to promote an average 0.5°C increase in colonic temperature. Hamsters maintained their ventilatory frequency at baseline levels by selecting a cooler Ta during microwave exposure. In contrast, hamsters maintained at a Ta of 30°C (without a temperature gradient) underwent a sharp increase in ventilatory frequency compared to animals allowed to select their own Ta.

3. 3.|These data support previous studies suggesting that during thermal stress behavioural thermoregulation (i.e. preferred Ta) takes prescedence over autonomic thermoregulation (i.e. ventilatory frequency). It is apparent that selecting a cooler Ta is a more efficient and/or effective than autonomic thermoregulation for dissipating a heat load accrued from microwave exposure.

1. 1.|The migratroy hamster Cricetulus migratorius, a small nocturnal rodent, inhabits ecosystems characterized by dramatic seasonal fluctuations of ambient temperatures. The aim of this study was to assess seasonal acclimatization of its thermoregulatory system.

2. 2.|Heat production by means of oxygen consumption and body temperature in various ambient temperatures as well as non-shivering thermogenesis were measured in C. migratorius. The hamsters were acclimated to two different photoperiod regimes (16L:8D and 8L:16D) at a constant ambient temprature of 24°C. Overall thermal conductance was calculated for such hamsters.

3. 3.|The results of this study indicate that photoperiod manipulations adjust the thermoregulatory system of the migratory hamster mainly by affecting overall thermal conductance.

2. 2.|The temperature increased with depth.

3. 3.|The rate of increase in Tes during exercise was greatest at the level of the diaphragm.

4. 4.|During passive heating of the body Tes increased most rapidly, and with shortest latency time, at the level adjacent to the left atrium of the heart.

5. 5.|During exercise, when breathing is deeper than at rest, Tes should be measured at a deeper level than that which is used during passive heating.

1. 1. The purpose of the study was to investigate the preferred temperature of the elderly after cold and heat exposures.

2. 2. Eight elderly and 9 young females wearing the same type of clothing were exposed to cold (10°C), moderate (25°C) or hot (35°C) environments for 30 min in the exposure room.

3. 3. Then they moved to the self-control room in which the temperature was set at 25°C, and the room temperature increased or decreased continuously by 0.4°C every minute.

4. 4. The subjects were instructed to operate the switch when they felt uncomfortably warm or cool during a 90-min period.

5. 5. In operating the switch, the changing in room temperature shifted to the opposite direction.

6. 6. The ambient temperature was recorded continuously and analyzed as the preferred temperature, which was defined as the midpoint temperature of the crest and trough of temperature records.

7. 7. The preferred temperatures after the cold exposure were significantly higher than those of other exposure conditions in the elderly.

8. 8. On the other hand, in the young, there was no significant difference in the preferred temperature among the exposure conditions.

9. 9. Although the effect of exposure to cold or hot environments decreased in the latter parts of self-control, the elderly still preferred the higher temperature after cold exposure.

1. 1.|The metabolic role of the thyroid gland was studied in intact snakes, Naja naja and Ptyas korros treated with tri-iodo-thyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) and in thyroidectomized (Tx) N. naja kept at 21°C by analyzing tissue composition and glycogen phosphorylase a activity.

2. 2.|Liver weight was unaffected by thyroid hormone injection in both species but decreases in liver glycogen followed T3 or T4 injection, and there was an increase in liver glycogen in N. naja. These changes in liver glycogen were accompanied by a decrease in glycogen phosphorylase a activity with T3 injection. T3 decreased muscle glycogen in Ptyas and Tx increased it in N. naja.

3. 3.|T3 increased % liver lipid in Ptyas but not in Naja.

4. 4.|Between species, there were differences in liver weight, blood glucose level, cholesterol level and % muscle lipid.

5. 5.|The results showed that thyroid hormones affected carbohydrate and lipid metabolism at a low temperature of 21°C, although the significance is not known.

1. Heat production (HP) and body core temperature (CT) where measured in 1- to 10-day old Muscovy ducklings and turkey chick, incubated during the last week before hatching at a lower (34.5 °C, LT-group) or at higher (38.5 °C, HT-group), than the normal temperature of 37.5 °C (control C-group).

2. In Muscovy ducklings, on the 1st day post-hatching HP was affected by exposure to low Ta of 10 °C Ta 28.2±3.9 W kg−1 in the LT-group vs. 18.1±2.4 W kg−1 in normal controls. On the same day, CT was higher (39.5±1.1 °C) in the HT- than in the CT-group (37.5±2.9 °C).

3. In turkeys, the relationships between Ta and HP could be described by parabola-like functions. Apart from the first day of life, the HP of the LT-group and the HT-group was higher than of the CT-group.

4. The low prenatal temperature of incubation resulted in a decrease of the preferred temperature in the LH-group and in an increase in the HT-group.

5. It is concluded that changes in incubation temperature at the end of embryonic development may induce an epigenetic temperature adaptation, which results in a long-lasting cold- and warm-adaptation in ducks but not in turkeys.

1. 1.|The effects of thermal stimulation of the preoptic region (POAH) and the spinal cord on non-shivering thermogenesis (NST) and shivering were studied in euthermic golden hamsters.

2. 2.|Shivering intensity is suppressed by heating the POAH but is independent of spinal cord temperature. Therefore, NST in the interscapular brown adipose tissue does not suppress shivering.

3. 3.|NST is inhibited by heating of the POAH as well as of spinal cord. It is discussed that the control of NST by two different central thermosensitive areas is significant for thermoregulation during exercise.

1. 1. Seven thermal conditions were imposed on male sitting subjects (slightly clothed: 0.6 clo).

2. 2. A thermal mannikin was also used to determine the exact operative temperature, T0.

3. 3. Conditions were: uniform (UN: all parameters at 24.5°C, air velocity at 0.15 ms−1), heated ceiling (HC at 45°C), heated floor (HF at 34°C), cold floor (CF at 14°C), two conditions of one cold wall at 6°C (CW1 and CW2 respectively with and without air temperature compensation) and increased air velocity (AV at 0.4 ms−1).

4. 4. Local skin temperatures and answers to questionnaires were obtained.

5. 5. Skin temperature variations were affected by conditions and slight T0 changes.

6. 6. Comfort judgments were fairly well related to T0, especially when expressed as differences between actual non-uniform environment and the uniform one.

7. 7. It is concluded that, in case of non-uniform environments close to thermoneutral zone, thermal comfort or discomfort reflects the climate alterations better than the thermal sensation does.
