The song of many bird species is relatively constant in form, yet each bird has more than one song type, making it an excellent model for studies of the mechanisms underlying switching between behaviour patterns. The chaffinch is a good example. Males sing with eventual variety, repeating each song type in the repertoire a few times before switching to another type. The mechanism triggering these switches is not known. We investigated long continuous recordings of spontaneous singing by six wild males to test two hypotheses: (1) that a maximum number of repetitions limits bout length; or (2) that a switch occurs after a song type bout reaches a maximum duration ('time window'). Strong evidence was found for a temporal limitation: song type bouts with many repetitions were delivered only at a fast rate, whereas bouts consisting of few songs were delivered either fast or slow. Colonial breeding occurs in a wide range of taxa, however the advantages promoting its evolution and maintenance remain poorly understood. In many avian species, breeding colonies vary by several orders of magnitude and one approach to investigating the evolution of coloniality has been to examine how potential costs and benefits vary with colony size. Several hypotheses predict that foraging efficiency may improve with colony size, through benefits associated with social foraging and information exchange. However, it is argued that competition for limited food resources will also increase with colony size, potentially reducing foraging success. Here we use a number of measures (brood feeding rates, chick condition and survival, and adult condition) to estimate foraging efficiency in the fairy martin Petrochelidon ariel, across a range of colony sizes in a single season (17 colonies, size range 28–139 pairs). Brood provisioning rates were collected from multiple colonies simultaneously using an electronic monitoring system, controlling for temporal variation in environmental conditions. Provisioning rate was correlated with nestling condition, though we found no clear relationship between provisioning rate and colony size for either male or female parents. However, chicks were generally in worse condition and broods more likely to fail or experience partial loss in larger colonies. Moreover, the average condition of adults declined with colony size. Overall, these findings suggest that foraging efficiency declines with colony size in fairy martins, supporting the increased competition hypothesis. However, other factors, such as an increased ectoparasitise load in large colonies or change in the composition of phenotypes with colony size may have also contributed to these patterns.  相似文献

Cnidarians display a diverse range of reproductive tactics including sexual and asexual modes of reproduction. Although few studies have looked for intraspecific variation in reproductive tactics, flexible expression of such life-history traits may be favoured in species that occupy a range of habitats. We tested this in the sea anemone Actinia tenebrosa by comparing cycles of reproductive activity and the mode of production of brooded larvae in local populations occupying boulder fields and stable rock platforms. We determined the mode of production of broods from eight rock platforms (separated by up to 1600 km) and two boulder shores on the south east coast of Australia using a combination of allozyme data and four newly characterised microsatellite markers.

We determined seasonal patterns of brooding and gonad development by monthly dissection of 15–30 adults from each of two boulder fields and two stable platforms. Previous genetic studies have shown that populations of A. tenebrosa on rock platforms can be highly clonal, whereas anemones on more heterogeneous boulder habitats display levels of genotypic diversity similar to that expected for sexual reproduction. We genotyped a total of 221 juveniles from 37 brooding adults including 11 broods and 80 juveniles from boulder shores. We did not detect any evidence of sexual production of broods. All brooded juveniles displayed identical multi-locus genotypes to their brood parent irrespective of habitat of origin or location, including 28 broods (200 juveniles) that were heterozygous at one or more locus. Similarly, we found that temporal patterns of gonad formation and brooding were consistent across habitats and locations. We detected 346 mature males, 234 non-reproductive or immature individuals, and no mature females within a total of 580 dissected individuals. These data suggest that the reproductive tactics of A. tenebrosa are essentially fixed and that variation in the genotypic diversity of populations may reflect variation in factors such as the input of sexually derived planktonically dispersed recruits or post-settlement processes. However, the apparent lack of females paradoxically implies that sexual reproduction, and hence recruitment, must be rare or no longer possible within some populations, and highlights the need for long-term studies of these populations.  相似文献

Dasypyrum villosum (2n=14), a Mediterranean grass species of the Triticeae, exhibits intraindividual fruit colour polymorphism from pale yellow to almost black. Several studies have reported differences between the plants emerging from pale and dark fruits. They include histone content in root meristem nuclei, cell cycle duration, heterochromatin banding pattern, frequency of a tandemly repeated sequence, and nuclear genome size. In the present study, we examine whether the reports of genome size being up to 1.24-fold larger in seedlings from the lighter caryopses are reproducible. In all, 29 accessions from various countries, totaling 186 plants, were investigated for genome size using flow cytometry with propidium iodide as the DNA stain. Individuals differed 1.12-fold at most and accessions 1.07-fold. The mean genome size (1C-value) was 5.07 pg or 4954 Mbp. Within-accession comparisons of seedlings derived from light and dark caryopses were insignificant (P>0.100). Thus, we found no evidence for a modificatory genome size plasticity in D. villosum. In the light of our data, the previously reported genome size variation, up to 1.66-fold within populations and 1.67-fold between populations, appears unrealistically high. Suboptimal technical procedures for quantitative Feulgen staining are probably responsible for these earlier observations.  相似文献

We tested if variations (i.e., breadth) in morphology and habitat use vary predictably among six aquatic gastropod species that were collected across Indiana and Illinois, USA. We predicted that interspecific morphological variation would positively covary with variation in habitat use among species. We used geometric morphometrics (Procrustes technique and relative warp analysis) to quantify morphology and multivariate analyses (PCA) to quantify habitat. Increased morphological breadth did not vary predictably with increased habitat breadth. However, we found that life history traits correspond with patterns in morphological and habitat breadth for these six aquatic gastropods. Pulmonate gastropods (use lungs for respiration) that lack an operculum cover exhibited decreased morphological breadth compared to coenogastropods (use gills for respiration). This pattern may ultimately be a function of behavioral adaptations in freshwater gastropods. Gastropods that are capable of breathing air or using other behavioral modifications such as burrowing to escape predators may not require high morphological breadth. Conversely, selection may favor higher morphological breadth in gastropods with gills that also do not move out of the water column to escape predators.  相似文献

Spore productivities and establishment probabilities of eumycetozoans were estimated and compared with quantitative data obtained from field surveys, using series of cultures of a given substrate. Spore numbers per spore case were found to increase from one to four in protostelids to up to 105–106 in myxomycetes, whereas average spore size decreased slightly from 14.8 μm for protostelids to 10.3 μm in myxomycetes. Spore numbers of fructifications calculated from dimensions of spores and fruit bodies were in good agreement with direct counts carried out for six species of myxomycetes. A colonisation model is presented that estimates frequencies (as a percent of successfully colonized habitat islands), which is independent of a given density of spore rain and the sexual system of the species being considered. Whereas asexual species need a minimum spore rain of ca 0.7 spores per habitat island to reach a frequency of 50 %, this figure is at least 2.4-fold higher for sexual species, depending from the incompatibility system assumed. Data from cultures indicate that the maximum potential spore rain is usually three orders of magnitude higher than the minimum figure required to create the observed frequencies. Eumycetozoans seem to follow the evolutionary trends predicted by the model. Species with sexual reproductive systems produce often more spores than asexual ones; many morphospecies have sexual and asexual strains; and back-conversion from sexual to asexual reproduction occurs occasionally.  相似文献

Understanding the factors that constrain the reproductive success of animals and their demographics requires detailed insight into the processes of resource acquisition and allocation in relation to habitat richness. Parasitoid wasp females are valuable models in this respect because their lifetime reproductive success is closely tied to host availability. Parasitoids that manufacture eggs throughout adult life (i.e. ‘synovigenic’ species) and characteristically acquire nutrients via feeding are predicted to be plastic in their allocation to egg manufacture. Using the synovigenic parasitoid wasp Venturia canescens, we tested whether this prediction holds when females are faced with variation in the availability of both hosts and food. Laboratory experiments were conducted to determine how environmental variation affects parasitoid reproductive success and the lifetime dynamics of egg load and of major nutrient types. Our results, surprisingly, show that female V. canescens lacks a significant degree of reproductive plasticity under our experimental conditions. In particular, allocation of resources to reproduction was high irrespective of host availability. We attribute this lack of flexibility to the low energy content of V. canescens' eggs and to features peculiar to the ecology of this species. Bacterial genomes can evolve either by gene gain, gene loss, mutating existing genes, and/or by duplication of existing genes. Recent studies have clearly demonstrated that the acquisition of new genes by lateral gene transfer (LGT) is a predominant force in bacterial evolution. To better understand the significance of LGT, we employed a comparative genomics approach to model species-specific and intraspecies gene insertions/deletions (ins/del among 12 sequenced streptococcal genomes using a maximum likelihood method. This study indicates that the rate of gene ins/del is higher on the external branches and varies dramatically for each species. We have analyzed here some of the experimentally characterized species-specific genes that have been acquired by LGT and conclude that at least a portion of these genes have a role in adaptation.  相似文献

The influence of larval diet source in Sitophilus oryzae (L.), a primary grain feeder, on the choice of a new cereal host by young adult was investigated through a multiple choice comparative bioassay. For this purpose, virgin male and female adults, which had been reared as immatures in different grain commodities, were monitored according to their food preference in cylindrical arenas containing whole kernels of maize, rice, barley and wheat. The adults showed a clear individual preference for maize kernels, regardless of the previous food experience, sex and also the interval on which the adults are exposed to food. Males were much more mobile than females and visited more vigorously different commodities before the final choice. Female response was found to be related with male response to specific food sources. Hence, our results indicate that there was no natal habitat preference induction, since maize was, in most cases, the final commodity choice.  相似文献

Although the vertebrate stress response is essential for survival, frequent or prolonged stress responses can result in chronic physiological stress, which is associated with a suite of conditions that can impair survivorship and reproductive output. Anthropogenic habitat fragmentation and degradation are potential stressors of free-living vertebrates, and in theory could result in chronic stress. To address this issue, we compared haematological indicators of stress and condition in agile antechinus (Antechinus agilis) populations in 30 forest fragments and 30 undisturbed, continuous forest sites (pseudofragments) in south-eastern Australia over 2 years. In peripheral blood, the total leucocyte count was lower and the neutrophil/lymphocyte ratio and percentage of eosinophils in the total leucocyte population was higher in fragment than pseudofragment populations, indicating that fragment populations were probably experiencing higher levels of stress hormone-mediated and/or parasite infection-related chronic physiological stress. The total erythrocyte count and haematocrit were higher and mean erythrocyte haemoglobin content was lower in fragment than pseudofragment populations. This suggests that fragment populations showed possible signs of regenerative anaemia, a syndrome associated with elevated hypothalamus–pituitary–adrenal axis mediated stress. However, mean erythrocyte volume was also lower in fragments, and red blood cell distribution width did not differ between the study populations, findings which were not consistent with this diagnosis. Whole blood and mean cell haemoglobin concentrations were similar in fragment and pseudofragment populations. We suggest that where anthropogenic activity results in habitat fragmentation and degradation, chronic stress could contribute to a decline in agile antechinus populations. The broader implication is that chronic stress could be both symptomatic of, and contributing to, decline of some vertebrate populations in anthropogenically fragmented and degraded habitats.  相似文献

There is a widespread belief that warmer climate forests suffer more folivory, as a proportion of leaf area, than cooler climate forests. However, there is a need for closely standardized studies to test this assumption. In this study, we estimated total folivory as percentage area damaged in freshly fallen, undecayed autumn leaves from the forest floor during the lifetime of deciduous tree leaves, using scanner-linked software. Over a period of 2 years, 154 samples were taken at 96 forested localities in eastern North America, spanning 17° of latitude. In terms of percentage area damage per leaf, the results in both years sampled suggest that there is significantly more damage in warmer, lower latitude areas of eastern North America. The decreasing folivory rate is higher in northern than in southern regions. The observations of a latitudinal trend may suggest that ‘biotic’ interaction is indeed more important in warmer temperate climates compared to cool temperate climates.  相似文献

Reconstructing function from hominin fossils is complicated by disagreements over how to interpret primitively inherited, ape-like morphology. This has led to considerable research on aspects of skeletal morphology that may be sensitive to activity levels during life. We quantify trabecular bone morphology in three volumes of interest (dorsal, central, and palmar) in the third metacarpal heads of extant primates that differ in hand function: Pan troglodytes, Pongo pygmaeus, Papio anubis, and Homo sapiens. Results show that bone volume within third metacarpal heads generally matches expectations based on differences in function, providing quantitative support to previous studies. Pongo shows significantly low bone volume in the dorsal region of the metacarpal head. Humans show a similar pattern, as manipulative tasks mostly involve flexed and neutral metacarpo-phalangeal joint postures. In contrast, Pan and Papio have relatively high bone volume in dorsal and palmar regions, which are loaded during knuckle-walking/digitigrady and climbing, respectively. Regional variation in degree of anisotropy did not match predictions. Although trabecular morphology may improve behavioral inferences from fossils, more sophisticated quantitative strategies are needed to explore trabecular spatial distributions and their relationships to hand function.  相似文献

Recently, it has been shown that ratios of chlorophyll a toparticulate phosphorus (Chl a/PP) and chlorophyll a to particulatenitrogen (Chl a/PN) were significantly higher in eutrophic thanoligo/mesotrophic waters in 17 lakes on the central volcanicplateau, North Island, New Zealand. This difference was thoughtto be due to an increase in the chlorophyll a content of phytoplanktonin these eutrophic lakes. Corresponding measurements of chlorophylla and phytoplankton cell volume made during this study do notsupport this hypothesis. However, ratios of chlorophyll a toadenosine triphosphate and estimates of percentage phytoplanktonbiomass were significantly higher (P<0.05) in our eutrophicthan oligo/mesotrophic samples, suggesting that Chl a/PP andChl a/PN may be high in eutrophic waters simply because phytoplanktoncomprise more of the total microbial biomass. This hypothesisis supported by a strong linear relationship (r=0.88, P<0.001)between Chl a/PP and percentage phytoplankton biomass in sixof our study lakes where corresponding measurements were made.  相似文献
