The variation of light intensity has obvious effects on leaf external morphology, internal anatomy, and physiological characteristics; it even induces changes in secondary metabolite production. The effects of different irradiance levels on biomass, gas exchange parameters, and photosynthetic pigment contents in Mahonia bodinieri (Gagnep.) Laferr. were analyzed here. Combined analyses of physiology, cytology, and HPLC were used to study the differences in leaf morphology, structure, physiological characters, and alkaloid content in response to different irradiances. The results indicated that the highest foliar biomass was observed under I 50 (50 % of full sunlight) followed by I 30 (30 % of full sunlight), the highest net photosynthetic rate, stomatal conductance, transpiration rate values were observed under I 30 followed by I 50, and lower values occurred in I 10 (10 % of full sunlight) and I 100 (full sunlight). With increased light intensity, total leaf area and the contents of chlorophyll a (Chl a), chlorophyll b (Chl b), and chlorophyll (Chl a+b) per unit leaf area were clearly reduced, whereas leaf mass per area, carotenoid content, leaf thickness, thickness of palisade and spongy parenchyma, and stomatal density were all significantly increased. Electron microscopic observation revealed that the number of grana, stroma lamellae and the number of starch grains in chloroplasts were decreased, the number of plastoglobuli was increased when irradiance levels increased. The estimated total yield of alkaloids in a single plant was higher under I 30 and I 50 than under I 10 or I 100 as a result of the higher biomass of the plants. Therefore, I 30 and I 50 were not only beneficial to increase biomass, but also suitable for the synthesis and accumulation of the major secondary metabolites (alkaloids). Our findings provide valuable data for the determination and regulation of irradiance levels during artificial cultivation of M. bodinieri.  相似文献

Eupatorium adenophorum is one of the more noxious invasive plants worldwide. However, the mechanisms underlying its invasiveness are still not well elucidated. In this study, we compared the invader with its two native congeners (E. heterophyllum and E. japonicum) at four irradiances in terms of growth, biomass allocation, morphology, and photosynthesis. The higher light-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max) and total leaf area of the invader may contribute to its higher relative growth rate (RGR) and total biomass compared with its native congeners. Total biomass and RGR increased significantly with the increase of P max and total leaf area. The higher support organ mass fraction and the lower root mass fraction of the invader may also contribute to its higher RGR and biomass through increasing carbon assimilation and reducing respiratory carbon loss, respectively. The higher growth rate of the invader increased its total leaf area, ramet number, and crown area. These traits may help the invader to form dense monoculture, outshading native plant species. However, consistently higher leaf area ratio, specific leaf area, and leaf mass fraction were not found across irradiances for the invader compared with its native congeners. Higher plasticity in response to irradiance was also not found for the invader. The invader retained advantages over the natives across irradiances, while its performance decreased with lower irradiance. The results indicate that the invader may be one of the few super invaders. Reducing irradiance may inhibit its invasions.  相似文献

Leaf mass per unit area (LMA), carbon and nitrogen contents, leaf construction cost, and photosynthetic capacity (P max) of Adiantum reniforme var. sinensis, an endangered fern endemic to the Three Gorges region in southwest China, were compared in five populations differing in habitat such as soil moisture and irradiance. The low soil moisture and high irradiance habitat population exhibited significantly higher LMA, area-based leaf construction (CCA), and carbon content (CA), but lower leaf nitrogen content per unit dry mass (NM) than the other habitat populations. The high soil moisture and low irradiance habitat populations had the lowest CCA, but their cost/benefic ratios of CCA/P max were similar to the medium soil moisture and irradiance habitat population due to their lower leaf P max. Hence A. reniforme var. sinensis prefers partially shaded, moist but well-drained, slope habitats. Due to human activities, however, its main habitats now are cliffs or steeply sloped bare rocks with poor and thin soil. The relatively high energy requirements and low photosynthetic capacity in these habitats could limit the capability of the species in extending population or interspecific competition and hence increase its endangerment.  相似文献

Artemisinin is a promising and potent antimalarial drug naturally produced by the plant Artemisia annua L. but in very low yield. Its artemisinin content is known to be greatly affected by both genotype and environmental factors. In this study, the production of artemisinin and leaf biomass in Artemisia annua L. was significantly increased by exogenous GA3 treatment. The effect of GA3 application on expression of proposed key enzymes involved in artemisinin yield was examined in both wild type (007) and FPS-overexpression (253-2) lines of A. annua. In the wild type (007) at 6 h post GA3 application there was an abrupt rise in FPS, ADS and CYP71AV1 expression and at 24 h a temporary and significant peak in artemisinin (1.45-fold higher than the control). After GA3 application in line 253-2, there was a dramatic rise in expression of FPS at 3 h, CYP71AV1 at 9 h and ADS at 72 h and accumulation of artemisinin after 7 days, which was a delay when compared with the wild type plant. Thus, increased artemisinin content from exogenous GA3 treatment was associated with increased expression of key enzymes in the artemisinin biosynthesis pathway. Interestingly, exogenous GA3 continuously enhanced artemisinin content from the vegetative stage to flower initiation in both plant lines and gave significantly higher leaf biomass than in control plants. Consequently, the artemisinin yield in GA3-treated plants was much higher than in control plants. Although the maximum artemisinin content was found at the full blooming stage [2.1% dry weight (DW) in 007 and 2.4% DW in 253-2], the highest artemisinin yield in GA3-treated plants was obtained during the flower initiation stage (2.4 mg/plant in 007 and 2.3 mg/plant in 235-2). This was 26.3 and 27.8% higher, respectively, than in non-treated plants 007 and 253-2. This study showed that exogenous GA3 treatment enhanced artemisinin production in pot experiments and should be suitable for field application.  相似文献

We investigated the effect of growth irradiance (I) on photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max), dark respiration rate (R D), carboxylation efficiency (CE), and leaf mass per unit area (LMA) in seedlings of the following four tropical tree species with contrasting shade-tolerance. Anthocephalus chinensis (Rubiaceae) and Linociera insignis (Oleaceae) are light-demanding, Barringtonia macrostachya (Lecythidaceae) and Calophyllum polyanthum (Clusiaceae) are shade-tolerant. Their seedlings were pot-planted under shading nets with 8, 25, and 50 % daylight for five months. With increase of I, all species displayed the trends of increases of LMA, photosynthetic saturation irradiance, and chlorophyll-based P max, and decreases of chlorophyll (Chl) content on both area and mass bases, and mass-based P max, R D, and CE. The area-based P max and CE increased with I for the light-demanders only. Three of the four species significantly increased Chl-based CE with I. This indicated the increase of nitrogen (N) allocation to carboxylation enzyme relative to Chl with I. Compared to the two shade-tolerants, under the same I, the two light-demanders had greater area- and Chl-based P max, photosynthetic saturation irradiance, lower Chl content per unit area, and greater plasticity in LMA and area- or Chl-based P max. Our results support the hypothesis that light-demanding species is more plastic in leaf morphology and physiology than shade-tolerant species, and acclimation to I of tropical seedlings is more associated with leaf morphological adjustment relative to physiology. Leaf nitrogen partitioning between photosynthetic enzymes and Chl also play a role in the acclimation to I.  相似文献

Abstract: We investigated biomass investment in support and assimilative leaf biomass in Fagus orientalis Lipsky and F. sylvatica L., and foliar biomechanical characteristics in F. orientalis to gain mechanistic insight into the determinants of leaf inclination in Fagus along the canopy light gradient. Because the leaf laminas of Fagus are elliptical, with petioles comprising only ca. 8 % of total leaf length, a leaf was approximated as a continuous sine load. Lamina load increased with increasing seasonal integrated quantum flux density in the canopy (Qint), but leaf length was independent of irradiance. Despite greater load, leaf deflection under leaf own weight was lower for leaves at higher Qint, indicating that foliage flexural stiffness (EI), that is a variable characterizing the resistance of beam‐like structures to bending, scaled positively with irradiance. The components of EI ‐ the leaf apparent Young's modulus of elasticity (E), which is a measure of leaf material properties, and lamina second moment of area (I), which characterizes the distribution of mass around the axis of bending ‐ were also related to irradiance, with E decreasing, but I increasing with Qint. The positive scaling of I with Qint was associated with increases in leaf thickness and, in particular, with increases in the degree of leaf rolling, allowing the distribution of leaf mass further away from the neutral axis. Decreases in E were correlated with decreased leaf biomass investments in the midrib at higher irradiance. Both lamina and midrib nitrogen concentrations decreased with increasing Qint, suggesting that foliage dry mass based physiological activity was lower at higher irradiance, possibly because of an interaction of Qint with water stress in the canopy. Given that the veins also provide a pathway for water and nutrient transport to the leaf cells, as well as for carbon translocation from the leaf, lower leaf physiological activity in high light may provide an explanation for the lower biomass investment in major veins in high light. We conclude that foliage biomechanical characteristics and leaf inclination in the canopy are significantly affected by irradiance, and that the light effects may be modified by the reverse correlation between light and water availabilities in the canopy.

Hemp (Cannabis sativa L.) may be a suitable crop for the bio‐economy as it requires low inputs while producing a high and valuable biomass yield. With the aim of understanding the physiological basis of hemp's high resource‐use efficiency and yield potential, photosynthesis was analysed on leaves exposed to a range of nitrogen and temperature levels. Light‐saturated net photosynthesis rate (Amax) increased with an increase in leaf nitrogen up to 31.2 ± 1.9 μmol m?2 s?1 at 25 °C. The Amax initially increased with an increase in leaf temperature (TL), levelled off at 25–35 °C and decreased when TL became higher than 35 °C. Based on a C3 leaf photosynthesis model, we estimated mesophyll conductance (gm), efficiency of converting incident irradiance into linear electron transport under limiting light (κ2LL), linear electron transport capacity (Jmax), Rubisco carboxylation capacity (Vcmax), triose phosphate utilization capacity (Tp) and day respiration (Rd), using data obtained from gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence measurements at different leaf positions and various levels of incident irradiance, CO2 and O2. The effects of leaf nitrogen and temperature on photosynthesis parameters were consistent at different leaf positions and among different growth environments except for κ2LL, which was higher for plants grown in the glasshouse than for those grown outdoors. Model analysis showed that compared with cotton and kenaf, hemp has higher photosynthetic capacity when leaf nitrogen is <2.0 g N m?2. The high photosynthetic capacity measured in this study, especially at low nitrogen level, provides additional evidence that hemp can be grown as a sustainable bioenergy crop over a wide range of climatic and agronomic conditions.  相似文献

Seedlings of Chrysanthemum, cultivar ‘Puma Sunny’, were grown under a range of shading regimes (natural full sunlight, 55, 25, and 15% of full sunlight) for 18 days. Here, we characterized effects of varying light regimes on plant morphology, photosynthesis, chlorophyll fluorescence, anatomical traits, and chloroplast ultrastructure. We showed that leaf color was yellowish-green under full sunlight. Leaf area, internode length, and petiole length of plants were the largest under 15% irradiance. Net photosynthetic rate, water-use efficiency, PSII quantum efficiency, and starch grain were reduced with decreasing irradiance from 100 to 15%. Heavy shading resulted in the partial closure of PSII reaction centers and the CO2 assimilation was restricted. The results showed the leaves of plants were thinner under 25 and 15% irradiance with loose palisade tissue and irregularly arranged spongy mesophyll cells, while the plants grown under full sunlight showed the most compact leaf palisade parenchyma. Irradiance lesser than 25% of full sunlight reduced carbon assimilation and led to limited plant growth. Approximately 55% irradiance was suggested to be the optimal for Chrysanthemum morifolium.  相似文献

The effects of shade on the growth, leaf photosynthetic characteristics, and chlorophyll (Chl) fluorescence parameters of Lycoris radiata var. radiata were determined under differing irradiances (15, 65, and 100% of full irradiance) within pots. The HI plants exhibited a typical decline in net photosynthetic rate (P N) during midday, which was not observed in MI- and LI plants. This indicated a possible photoinhibition in HI plants as the ratio of variable to maximum fluorescence (Fv/Fm) value was higher and the minimal fluorescence (F0) was lower in the, and LI plants. Diurnal patterns of stomatal conductance (g s) and transpiration rate (E) were remarkably similar to those of P N at each shade treatments, and the intercellular CO2 concentration (C i) had the opposite change trend. Under both shading conditions, the light saturation point, light compensation point and photon-saturated photosynthetic rate (P max) became lower than those under full sunlight, and it was the opposite for the apparent quantum yield (AQY). The higher the level of shade, the lower the integrated daytime carbon gain, stomatal and epidermis cell densities, specific leaf mass (SLM), bulb mass ratio (BMR), leaf thickness, and Chl a/b ratio. In contrast, contents of Chls per dry mass (DM), leaf area ratio (LAR), leaf mass ratio (LMR), leaf length, leaf area and total leaf area per plant increased under the same shade levels to promote photon absorption and to compensate for the lower radiant energy. Therefore, when the integrated daytime carbon gain, leaf area and total leaf area per plant, which are the main factors determining the productivity of L. radiata var. radiata plant, were taken into account together, this species may be cultivated at about 60∼70% of ambient irradiance to promote its growth.  相似文献

Relationship of leaf anatomy with photosynthetic acclimation of Valeriana jatamansi was studied under full irradiance [FI, 1 600 mol(PPFD) m–2 s–1] and net-shade [NS, 650 mol(PPFD) m–2 s–1]. FI plants had thicker leaves with higher respiration rate (R D), nitrogen content per unit leaf area, chlorophyll a/b ratio, high leaf mass per leaf area unit (LMA), and surface area of mesophyll cell (S mes) and chloroplasts (S c) facing intercellular space than NS plants. The difference between leaf thickness of FI and NS leaves was about 28 % but difference in photon-saturated rate of photosynthesis per unit leaf area (P Nmax) was 50 %. This indicates that P Nmax can increase to a larger extent than the leaf thickness with increasing irradiance in V. jatamansi. Anatomical studies showed that the mesophyll cells of FI plants had no open spaces along the mesophyll cell walls (higher S c), but in NS plants wide open spaces along the mesophyll cell wall (lower S c) were found. Positive correlation between S c and P Nmax explained the higher P Nmax in FI plants. Increase in mesophyll thickness increased the availability of space along the mesophyll cell wall for chloroplasts (increased S c) and hence P Nmax was higher in FI plants. Thus this Himalayan species can acclimate to full sunlight by altering leaf anatomy and therefore may be cultivated in open fields.  相似文献

Leaves deep in canopies can suddenly be exposed to increased irradiances following e.g. gap formation in forests or pruning in crops. Studies on the acclimation of photosynthesis to increased irradiance have mainly focused on the changes in photosynthetic capacity (Amax), although actual irradiance often remains below saturating level. We investigated the effect of changes in irradiance on the photosynthesis irradiance response and on nitrogen allocation in fully grown leaves of Cucumis sativus. Leaves that fully developed under low (50 µmol m?2 s?1) or moderate (200 µmol m?2 s?1) irradiance were subsequently exposed to, respectively, moderate (LM‐leaves) or low (ML‐leaves) irradiance or kept at constant irradiance level (LL‐ and MM‐leaves). Acclimation of photosynthesis occurred within 7 days with final Amax highest in MM‐leaves, lowest in LL‐leaves and intermediate in ML‐ and LM‐leaves, whereas full acclimation of thylakoid processes underlying photosystem II (PSII) efficiency and non‐photochemical quenching occurred in ML‐ and LM‐leaves. Dark respiration correlated with irradiance level, but not with Amax. Light‐limited quantum efficiency was similar in all leaves. The increase in photosynthesis at moderate irradiance in LM‐leaves was primarily driven by nitrogen import, and nitrogen remained allocated in a similar ratio to Rubisco and bioenergetics, while allocation to light harvesting relatively decreased. A contrary response of nitrogen was associated with the decrease in photosynthesis in ML‐leaves. Net assimilation of LM‐leaves under moderate irradiance remained lower than in MM‐leaves, revealing the importance of photosynthetic acclimation during the leaf developmental phase for crop productivity in scenarios with realistic, moderate fluctuations in irradiance that leaves can be exposed to.  相似文献

The initial (in vivo) and total (activity present after preincubation with CO2 and Mg2+) activities of ribulose bisphosphate carboxylase were both assayed in extracts of leaves of soybean (Glycine max) plants which had been grown under 4 different irradiance levels. The total carboxylase activity per unit leaf area decreased with decreased irradiance during growth but was not different on a dry weight basis. The initial activity as a percentage of the total activity was unchanged (approximately 95%) except in leaves of plants grown at the lowest irradiance (74%). When the plants grown at the lowest irradiance were exposed to high irradiance, the initial activity was increased to 93% of the total. Light saturated rates of photosynthesis per unit leaf area were lower and saturated at lower irradiance for plants grown at lower irradiances. Initial carboxylase activity was correlated closely (r2=0.84) with leaf photosynthesis rate on a dry weight basis.  相似文献

  • 1 We investigated photosynthesis‐irradiance relationships (P‐I curves; P = oxygen production rate due to photosynthesis, I = light irradiance rate at the water surface) and ecosystem respiration in a 9 km long reach of a river that is characterised by light conditions favouring primary production, high ambient nutrient concentrations, a high re‐aeration rate, and frequent spates. We addressed the question of how disturbances (spates) and season influence photosynthesis and ecosystem respiration.
  • 2 We used an oxygen mass‐balance model of the river to identify ecosystem respiration rates and the two parameters of a hyperbolic P‐I function (Pmax = maximum oxygen production rate due to photosynthesis, α = the initial slope of the P‐I function). The model was fitted to dissolved oxygen concentrations quasi‐continuously recorded at the end of the reach. We estimated parameters for 137 three‐day periods (during the years 1992–97) and subsequently explored the potential influence of season and disturbances (spates) on Pmax, α and ecosystem respiration using stepwise regression analysis.
  • 3 Photosynthesis‐irradiance relationships and ecosystem respiration were subject to distinct seasonal variation. Only a minor portion of the variability of P‐I curves could be attributed to disturbance (spates), while ecosystem respiration did not correlate with disturbance related parameters. Regular seasonal variation in photosynthesis and ecosystem respiration apparently prevailed due to the absence of severe disturbances (a lack of significant bedload transport during high flow).

Abstract Gas exchange and growth of beech seedlings planted in the understory of a recently thinned pinewood were recorded for 2 years. Relative irradiance was assessed by hemispherical photographs taken just after the thinning. Predawn water potential (pd), daily gas exchange and chlorophyll fluorescence were measured several times during the two growing seasons. Maximum values of photosynthesis (A max) and stomatal conductance to water vapour (g wvmax) were established from daily data. Maximum quantum efficiency of PS II was recorded at dawn by taking the variable to maximum chlorophyll fluorescence ratio on dark adapted leaves (F v/F m). In the middle of each summer, leaf nitrogen content and leaf mass per area were evaluated, and height growth and basal area increment were recorded at the end of the season. The thinning treatment removed half the trees and generated around 10% more available relative irradiance (GLF). This was followed by an increase in net photosynthesis at saturating PPFD (A sat) and in maximum stomatal conductance to water vapour (g wvmax). Moreover, specific leaf mass (SLM) and mass based nitrogen content (Nm) showed higher values for seedlings in the thinned stand. In both years, a positive relationship was established between the area based nitrogen content (Na) and maximum net photosynthesis (A max). In 1998, a year with a dry summer, seedlings suffered a significant drop in daily A max irrespective of the thinning regime. This was a response to an increase in stomatal limitation to net photosynthesis, g wvmax reaching the lowest value on dates with the highest drought. A lack of decrease of Fv/Fm confirmed the absence of significant non-stomatal limitation to A as a consequence of photoinhibition after opening the pinewood. A higher maximum quantum efficiency of open PS II centres (Fv/Fm) was registered in seedlings in the thinned stand. The significance of the differences between the treatments was stronger in the second year after thinning. In 1999, a year with frequent summer storms, water availability increased for seedlings growing under the thinned pinewood. Overall, the reduced pine overstory had a positive effect on physiological responses of beech seedlings, which was translated into improved seedling growth.  相似文献

The ability of silver fir ( Abies alba Mill.) to acclimate to different levels of irradiance was tested with 3-year-old seedlings, grown for 2 years in a nursery close to Nancy (eastern France) under 100, 48, 18 and 8% of incident irradiance (neutral shade nets). Growth, total nutrients in needles, maximal carboxylation rate ( V cmax), maximal light driven electron flow ( J max) and the relative amount of nitrogen allocated to photosynthetic processes (carboxylation, bioenergetics, light harvesting) were investigated. The sensitivity to drought stress was assessed among the phenotypes resulting from light acclimation. Leader-shoot and branch elongation were greatest under 18% irradiance. Total seedling biomass, root-to-total biomass ratio, total leaf area, leaf mass-to-area ratio and needle-area based nitrogen content responded positively to increasing irradiance while leaf area ratio decreased. Both V cmax and J max increased by a factor of 1.6 and 1.8, respectively, from the lowest to the highest irradiance but the ratio J max/ V cmax remained stable. All these parameters, expressed on a projected needle area basis, remained within the lower range of values measured for broadleaved trees. Relative allocation of needle N to the different components of the photosynthetic apparatus was very low: 12, 3 and 7% of total nitrogen were invested in carboxylation, bioenergetics and light harvesting, respectively. The relative allocation of nitrogen to carboxylation and bioenergetics remained stable while that to light harvesting decreased with increasing irradiance. During drought, seedlings pre-acclimated to shade closed their stomata at higher predawn needle water potential than those which were grown under higher irradiance. Critical temperature for PSII photochemistry in needles was unaffected by irradiance and was close to 47°C. Drought significantly increased the critical temperature up to 51°C. In general, the amplitude of responses of silver fir to changing irradiance (phenotypic plasticity) was smaller than that recorded in broadleaved species.  相似文献

Chlorophyll (Chl) content, dry mass, relative water content (RWC), leaf mass per area (LMA), proline (Pro) content, malondialdehyde (MDA) content, superoxide dismutase (SOD) and peroxidase (POD) activity, P N-PAR response curves and gas exchange were studied to determine the effects of water stress on photosynthetic activity, dry mass partitioning and metabolic changes in four provenances of neem (Azadirachta indica A. Juss). The results indicated that provenance differences existed in the adaptation response to water stress that included changes to growth strategies coupled with ecophysiological and metabolic adjustments. As water stress increased, stomatal conductance (g s), net photosynthetic rate (P N), transpiration rate (E), and leaf RWC decreased while LMA increased in all provenances. Dry mass was reduced in droughted plants and the percentage increased in dry mass allocated to roots, and enzyme activities of SOD and POD were highest in neem originating from Kalyani (KA) provenance and lowest in neem originating from New Dehli (ND) provenance. In contrast, water stress increased MDA content least in KA and most in ND. Furthermore, neem originating from ND also had the greatest decrease in Chl a/b ratio while the ratio was least affected in neem originating from KA. These findings suggest neem originating from KA may have more drought resistance than neem originating from ND. The data from P N-PAR response curves are less clear. While these curves showed that drought stress increased compensation irradiance (I c) and dark respiration (R D) and decreased saturation irradiance (I s) and maximum net photosynthetic rate (P max), the extent of decline in P max was provenance dependent. P max under non-waterlimiting conditions was higher in neem originating from Jodhpur (MA) (about 14 μmol m−2 s−1) than in the other three provenances (all about 10 μmol m−2 s−1), but mild water stress had minimal effect on P max of these three provenances whereas P max of MA provenance declined to 10 μmol m−2 s−1, i.e. a similar value. However, under severe water stress P max of MA and KA provenances had declined to 40% of non-stressed values (about 6 and 4 μmol m−2 s−1, respectively) whereas the decline in P max of neem originating from Kulapachta (KU) and ND provenances was about 50% of nonstressed values (about 5 μmol m−2 s−1). These data suggest the P N responses of KU and ND provenances are most tolerant, and KA and MA least tolerant to increasing water stress, but also suggest MA provenance could be the most desired under both non-water-limiting and water-limiting conditions due to highest P max in all conditions.  相似文献

The effects of shade on benthic calcareous periphyton were tested in a short-hydroperiod oligotrophic subtropical wetland (freshwater Everglades). The experiment was a split-plot design set in three sites with similar environmental characteristics. At each site, eight randomly selected 1-m2 areas were isolated individually in a shade house, which did not spectrally change the incident irradiance but reduced it quantitatively by 0, 30, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90 and 98%. Periphyton mat was sampled monthly under each shade house for a 5 month period while the wetland was flooded. Periphyton was analyzed for thickness, DW, AFDW, chlorophyll a (chl a) and incubated in light and dark BOD bottles at five different irradiances to assess its photosynthesis–irradiance (PI) curve and respiration. The PI curves parameters P max, I k and eventually the photoinhibition slope (β) were determined following non-linear regression analyses. Taxonomic composition and total algal biovolume were determined at the end of the experiment. The periphyton composition did not change with shade but the PI curves were significantly affected by it. I k increased linearly with increasing percent irradiance transmittance (%IT = 1−%shade). P max could be fitted with a PI curve equation as it increased with %IT and leveled off after 10%IT. For each shade level, the PI curve was used to integrate daily photosynthesis for a day of average irradiance. The daily photosynthesis followed a PI curve equation with the same characteristics as P max vs. %IT. Thus, periphyton exhibited a high irradiance plasticity under 0–80% shade but could not keep up the same photosynthetic level at higher shade, causing a decrease in daily GPP at 98% shade levels. The plasticity was linked to an increase in the chl a content per cell in the 60–80% shade, while this increase was not observed at lower shade likely because it was too demanding energetically. Thus, chl a is not a good metric for periphyton biomass assessment across variously shaded habitats. It is also hypothesized that irradiance plasticity is linked to photosynthetic coupling between differently comprised algal layers arranged vertically within periphyton mats that have different PI curves.  相似文献

Banana plants (Musa sp., Musaceae) were grown for 2 years in the field in 12×20m plots under irradiance levels incident upon the canopy of 100, 81, 62 and 32% of sunlight. Time-integrated parameters such as leaf δ13C, yield and leaf mass to area ratio were linearly correlated with irradiance level (R2>0.9). In contrast, midday CO2 assimilation and transpiration efficiency (A/g) decreased significantly and substomatal CO2 concentrations (cst) increased significantly only at the lowest irradiance levels (below 81% irradiance). Diurnal gas exchange measurements indicated that the linear response of the long-term parameters may be associated with the significant variations in photosynthetic activity among the irradiance treatments observed only in the early morning hours. The linear fit between yield and irradiance level (per cent of control) had a slope of 0.82 (with apparently constant yield to biomass ratio). These results directly demonstrate the significance of variations in incident light, such as may be associated with increasing cloudiness, on productivity of tropical plants such as the banana. The importance of using time-integrated indicators in general, and the reliability of using 13C discrimination in particular, in evaluating the responses of plants to changes in incident irradiance is demonstrated.  相似文献
