The paradox recently raised by Wang and Yuan (Proteins 2000;38:165-175) in protein structural class prediction is actually a misinterpretation of the data reported in the literature. The Bayes decision rule, which was deemed by Wang and Yuan to be the most powerful method for predicting protein structural classes based on the amino acid composition, and applied by these investigators to derive the upper limit of prediction rate for structural classes, is actually completely the same as the component-coupled algorithm proposed by previous investigators (Chou et al., Proteins 1998;31:97-103). Owing to lack of a complete or near-complete training data set, the upper limit rate thus derived by these investigators might be both invalid and misleading. Clarification of these points will further stimulate investigation of this interesting area.  相似文献

New evidence recently published in Nature (Watanabe et al., 2006), however, describes a bile acid signaling pathway that controls energy expenditure through induction of thyroid hormone signaling pathways. BackgroundHyponatremia is a common electrolyte disorder in inpatients related to morbidity and mortality. In this study, we aimed to examine whether there is a relationship between the incidence of hyponatremia and the seasons among the patients hospitalized in our nephrology department.MethodsThe inpatients in our Nephrology Department between 2012 and 2015 were retrospectively analyzed. The patients with serum sodium levels below 135 mmol/L were included in the study. Hyponatremia incidence was calculated as the proportion of inpatients with low sodium levels in a season to the total number of inpatients in the same season.ResultsOut of 1950 inpatients in four years, 509 were found to have hyponatremia (26.1%). The mean serum sodium level of the patients was 129.7±4.7 mmol/L. Hyponatremia incidences in autumn, winter, spring, and summer were found to be 28.7%, 15.4%, 20.4%, and 36.6%, respectively. Upon comparing the incidence of hyponatremia in patients hospitalized in winter and summer seasons, there was a significantly higher incidence of hyponatremia in summer (p<0.001). We found a positive correlation between hyponatremia incidence and temperature (r=0.867, p=0.001). However, there was a negative correlation between hyponatremia incidence and relative humidity (r=-0.735, p=0.001).ConclusionsThe highest hyponatremia incidence was observed in summer in a four-year period. Loss of sodium by perspiration, along with increased temperature and/or excessive hypotonic fluid intake, might contribute to the development of hyponatremia.  相似文献

Although there are many studies reporting correlations between relative body weight and blood pressure, the correlations are generally of low order. Furthermore, these observational studies provide, at best, circumstantial evidence concerning the effect of weight reduction on elevated blood pressure. After outlining key methodologic criteria for testing the hypothesis that weight loss lowers blood pressure among hypertensive obese subjects, this article reviews the best intervention studies that are available. Despite the demonstration in these randomized trials that weight reduction programs can lower weight successfully, the results for blood pressure lowering are in considerable disagreement. Two studies reported significant lowering of both systolic and diastolic blood pressure, one found significant lowering of systolic pressure only, and two failed to find significant differences in either. The definitive study of substantial weight loss among patients receiving no other antihypertensive treatment or standardized medical treatment with long-term follow-up has yet to be done. At best, weight loss offers very limited benefit for overweight hypertensives. At worst, weight loss programs are expensive to run, cause considerable patient discomfort and may delay the implementation of more effective therapy.  相似文献

Imprinted genes are monoallelically expressed in a parent-of-origin-specific manner, but for many genes reported to be imprinted, the occurrence of preferential expression--where both alleles are expressed but one is expressed more strongly than the other in a parent-of-origin-specific way--has been reported. This preferential expression found in genes described as imprinted has not been thoroughly addressed in genomic imprinting studies. To study this phenomenon, 50 genes, reported to be imprinted in the mouse, were chosen for investigation. Preferential expression was observed for 21 of 27 maternally expressed genes. However, only 5 of 23 paternally expressed genes showed preferential expression. Recently, it has been reported that a remarkable proportion of non-imprinted genes show differential allelic expression. If there is overlap between non-imprinted genes that are differentially expressed and imprinted genes that are preferentially expressed, we need to set new definitions of imprinted genes that, in turn, would probably lead to reassessments of the total number of imprinted genes in mammalian species.  相似文献

The metabolic theory of ecology (MTE) claims to derive ecological relationships from the structure of resource distribution networks, which is assumed to determine the scaling of metabolism with body mass, and from the effect of temperature on the rate of biological processes. MTE is controversial. I propose that some of the controversy stems from the implicit adoption of different views of science by the proponents and critics of MTE. The perspective of proponents is consistent with the theory-centric view of science called the received view, whereas many of the critics implicitly adopt an alternative view consistent with a model-centric view of science. I propose that adopting the model-centric view can help to settle some of the differences among proponents and critics of MTE.  相似文献

Skeletal muscle hosts all of the isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (NOS). It is well documented that nitric oxide (NO) regulates force generation and satellite cell activation, and therefore, damage repair of skeletal muscle. NO can also activate nociceptors of C-fibers, thereby causing the sensation of pain. Although delayed-onset of muscle soreness (DOMS) is associated with decreased maximal force generation, pain sensation and sarcomere damage, there is a paucity of research linking NO and DOMS. The present mini-review attempts to elucidate the possible relationship between NO and DOMS, based upon current literature.  相似文献

Lysine, an essential cationic amino acid, has a positively charged R group. The structure of lysine is given as (H3N+-)CH(-COO-)-CH2-CH2-CH2-CH2-N+H3.While the anabolic role(s) of the molecule has been in focus for quite a few decades now, its biological properties, e.g. role in cellular proliferation in vitro (both anchorage dependent and anchorage independent) and in vivo, its ability to induce strong inflammatory and immune responses - both humoral and cell mediated, its role in augmented healing of all types of wounds in animal models as well as in human subjects (both acute and chronic), as well as its role in inducing extensive angiogenic responses, have never received reasonable attention so far. In the current brief and indicative review (rather than exhaustive reviews of each area), we intend to bring these biological properties of the molecule to focus while discussing a few other interesting aspects - lysine as a food preservative as well as its possible role(s) in immune therapy. While the areas look extremely divergent, we propose a common denominator in the form of a possible molecular mechanism of action of the molecule in all these diverse situations.
