Summary Samples of leaves and fruits exploited as food items byTrachypithecus auratus sondaicus were analysed for nitrogen content, acid detergent fibre (ADF), pepsin cellulase digestibility (CDIG), condensed tannins (CT), total phenolics (TP) and protein precipitation capacity (PP) and compared with fruits and leaves not eaten. Differences in chemical measures for items eaten and not eaten were not statistically significant but trends indicate that leaves may have been selected for their lower fibre content and greater digestibility. Fruits eaten also had a higher mean level of CDIG and lower mean level of ADF than fruits not eaten but these measures are not considered to be of major importance in fruit selection as CDIG was lower and ADF higher in fruits eaten than in leaves eaten. Levels of CT, TP and PP capacity were higher in fruits eaten than in fruits not eaten but lower in leaves eaten than in leaves not eaten. The role of tannins and phenolics in food selection is discussed. Leaves (and fruits) were not strongly selected on the basis of protein content. Approximately half the dietary intake ofT. auratus sondaicus was leaves, a protein-rich food source. Possibly, protein levels in foliage at Pangandaran were sufficient that selection for this nutrient was not required. A nutrient other than protein (for example, soluble carbohydrates) may have been maximised through food selection. The protein/ADF ratio may provide an indicator of the acceptability of foliage in a habitat as potential food for a colobine. However, this ratio did not govern food selection byT. auratus sondaicus at Pangandaran.  相似文献

Black colobus monkeys (Golobus salanas) in the Douala-Edea Reserve, a rain-forest on the coast of Cameroon, have been shown to avoid young and mature leaves of most of the common plants in their habitat and to feed disproportionately heavily on leaves of rare plants. The proportion of leaves in the diet was low compared to most colobines studied, and the monkeys spent over half their feeding time eating seeds. Patterns of food selection were analysed in relation to distribution of nutrients, digestion–inhibitors and toxins in the vegetation. Colobw satanas select food items that are rich in mineral nutrients and nitrogen and low in content of the general digestion-inhibitors, lignin and tannin. They achieve this in the following ways: (i) by feeding preferentially on young leaves, which have higher nutrient content and lower contents of digestion-inhibitors than mature leaves; (ii) by eating those mature leaves with highest nument content relative to content of digestion-inhibitors; and (iii) by eating seeds, which are sources of readily available energy and which, as an item class, are less rich in digestion-inhibitors. Seeds at Douala-Edea appear to contain Ins nitrogen than leaves and C. satanas selects those seeds with highest nitrogen content. It is suggested that seed-feeding may be facilitated by the ability of the forestomach flora of these ruminant-like monkeys to detoxify some of the secondary compounds contained in seeds. Avoidance of most unused young and mature leaf items is correlated with a low nutrienudigestion-inhibitor ratio; avoidance of most unused seeds could be accounted for by their low nitrogen contents. Most items whose avoidance could not be explained in terms of these major constraints on food selection possess secondary compounds likely to be toxic. It is proposed that relative importance of digestion-inhibitors, low nutrient content and toxins as constraints on food selection by generalist herbivores will vary greatly among forests with different nutrient and secondary chemistry profiles.  相似文献

Tropical forests throughout the world are home to a guild of small ruminants that consume fruit as a substantial portion of their diet. Because the rumen is relatively inefficient at digesting nonstructural carbohydrates and only slowly digests cellulose, the feeding adaptations of frugivorous ruminants are enigmatic. We examined the nutritional value of wild figs to blue duikers, one of the smallest and most frugivorous ruminants, through chemical analyses and a series of digestion trials with six species of wild African figs. These figs were high in fat, protein, cell wall, lignin and Ca : P ratios, low in sugar and starch, and high in unextractable, fibre‐bound tannins when compared with many other fruits. The fibre‐bound tannins and protein caused protein digestibility and nitrogen balance to be consistently low or negative. The high fibre content of the figs allowed duikers to only digest 30–60% of energy contained in the figs. However, duikers were able to consume enough digestible energy to maintain body mass during 4‐day trials. Therefore, a ruminant digestive system is beneficial to mammals eating high fibre, high‐tannin tropical fruit like figs, especially if the mammal is small enough to harvest a sufficient amount to meet its daily energy requirements and has adaptations for reducing the effects of tannins on protein digestibility.  相似文献

Food selection in folivorous primates has been hypothesized to be correlated with leaf chemistry. To test this hypothesis, we conducted a 5-month study on Presbytis entellusin a moist deciduous forest in the Rajaji National Park,Uttar Pradesh, India. The study period covered two seasons, winter and spring. We used the percentage time spent feeding on each food item as an index of food selection, which we estimated from group scan data collected from one study group for 6 days each month. We estimated the selection ratio for each item as the ratio of time spent feeding to availability. We estimated food availability from vegetation sampling and phenological data in the home range of the study group. We estimated crude protein (CP), acid detergent fiber (ADF) and tannins in mature and young leaves of 12 major food species in the laboratory. Food selection is positively correlated with CP in winter and negatively correlated with ADF in both seasons. It also is correlated with CPJADF ratio, but to a lesser extent than the best predictor in winter and spring. Selection ratio is not correlated with CP and ADF in both seasons. It is probable that the inclusion of other factors, such as micronutrients, condensed tannins, and digestibility, might give a better prediction of food selection.  相似文献

A comparative analysis of aspects of the secondary chemistry of plants from the Kibale Forest, Uganda, and the Douala-Edea Forest Reserve, Cameroon (93 species in all) has shown mean concentrations of tannins and other phenolics to be significantly greater in both young and mature foliage from Douala-Edea than in comparable taxa from Kibale. The differences remain significant when analysis was restricted to common species only. Chromatographic analysis confirmed that the proportion of species from Douala-Edea yielding tannin breakdown products was significantly greater than that from Kibale. In contrast, the proportion of species whose leaves gave definite alkaloid-positive Dragendorff reactions was significantly higher in the Kibale site. Within each site, mature leaves of the great majority of species yielded either tannins or alkaloids but the presence of detectable quantities of both types of compound was rare. In each site distributions of the two classes relative to one another departed significantly from independence at the O < 0.005 level. Nutrient analyses of vegetation also showed striking differences between the two sites; the Ugandan material appearing to be more nutrient-rich. The distribution patterns of nutrients and of secondary metabolites between the two sites are discussed in relation to current hypotheses concerning strategies of defence chemistry among plant communities. The data suggest that in Douala-Edea, which is characterized by very sandy and acid soils, the common elements of the flora invest heavily in the production of high concentrations of tannins and other phenolics. According to current hypotheses, these are the class of secondary compounds whose characteristics are most suitable to defence of vegetation growing on poor soils, and/or in species-poor stands, and in which leaves are likely to be long-lived.  相似文献

Seasonal energy intake and digestion of bamboo by red pandas were measured in energy balance trials at the field station at an altitude of 3,100 m in Yele Natural Reserve, Mianning County of Sichuan Province, Peoples Republic of China. Two‐week trials were conducted at monthly intervals by feeding animals with only natural bamboo browse, Bashania spanostachya, from May to November 1995. Results demonstrated that energy intake, digestible energy, and digestibility differed significantly among seasons and diets. Energy digestibilities were high in summer‐autumn, intermediate in spring, and low in winter. These variations correlated positively with the nutrient contents of bamboo. The daily metabolic energy requirement measured varied from 2,603.3 kJ in the spring to 3,139.8 kJ in the summer‐autumn to 2,740.8 kJ in the winter. The results also showed that shoots were more easily digested than leaves and exhibited the highest digestibility. Restricted by the capacity of digestive tracts, red pandas poorly utilized the energy provided by bamboo as indicated by the lower energy digestibility (averaging 26.47% for leaves and 44.08% for shoots among the seasons). To fulfill their daily energy requirements, red pandas ingested a large amount of energy from bamboo leaves, which varied from 10,145.8 kJ in the spring, 12,045.1 kJ in the summer‐autumn, and 12,276.9 kJ in the winter to maximize the rate of energy intake. Summary Mangrove-derived tannins negatively effected laboratory-reared nematode populations and natural communities of meiobenthos in tropical mangrove forests along the northeastern coast of Australia. In the low and mid intertidal zones of five mangrove estuaries, nearly all of the dominant meiofaunal taxa correlated negatively with concentrations of sediment tannins. Only nematodes correlated with low tannin concentrations in the high intertidal zones. The negative exponential equation y=be -mx represented the best-fit for most of the meiofauna-tannin relationships. The mangrove-dwelling nematode, Terschellingia longicaudata did not grow (r=0.001) in the laboratory on fresh, tannin-rich leaves of the red mangrove, Rhizophora stylosa. Population growth of the nematode was significantly greater on fresh, tannin-poor leaves of the grey mangrove, Avicennia marina (r=0.081) with best growth (r=0.112) attained on a diet of tannin-free, mixed cereal. These preliminary field and laboratory results suggest that hydrolyzable tannins leached from mangrove roots and leaf litter are an important factor regulating intertidal meiobenthic communities in tropical mangrove forests along the northeastern Australian coast.  相似文献

The chemical composition of the now widespread tropical aquatic fern Salvinia molestawas analysed with regard to its suitability as a source of forage for ruminants. Three different stages of plant growth collected in Kerala, India, were air dried, brought to Germany, and used for Weende analysis, detergent fibre analysis, and the determination of gross energy, amino acids, tannins, and minerals. The concentration of 12.4% crude protein in sand-corrected dry matter (DM) and of some other nutrients in Salviniais comparable to that in conventional forage. However, the high content of crude ash (17.3% in DM) and of lignin (13.7%) and the presence of tannins (0.93%) may reduce acceptance as well as digestibility and therefore restrict the use of Salviniaas a potential feed source for ruminants.  相似文献

This work was conducted to evaluate the effect of tannins, contained in a by-product derived from olive oil extraction (two-stage olive cake), on nutrient digestibility, nitrogen (N) losses and liver and kidney functions in goats and wethers. Six Segureña wethers and six Granadina goats were fed three experimental diets: alfalfa hay (AH); alfalfa hay and a concentrate (formulated with two-stage olive cake, barley and a mineral-vitamin mixture) without (AHCO) or with polyethylene glycol (PEG) addition (AHCOP). The inclusion of two-stage olive cake increased condensed tannins content of the diet and led to a decrease ( P < 0.001) in dry matter, organic matter, neutral-detergent fibre, acid-detergent fibre and crude protein (CP) digestibility. PEG supply increased ( P < 0.001) CP digestibility and N losses in urine and faeces only in wethers. Concentrations of creatinine and alkaline phosphatase activity, measured in the serum of animals, were not modified either by olive cake inclusion or by PEG supply. Results from this work indicate a higher sensitivity of sheep to diets containing condensed tannins, compared with goats, and reveal no toxic effect of tannins from two-stage olive cake at the concentration used in the experimental diets.  相似文献

Summary Samples of stems, leaves, shoots and fruit (N=36) from lowland, African rain forest are analyzed for nutrients, digestibility and digestion-inhibiting substances. Plants from which the samples are drawn are all important in the diet of western gorillas, large generalist herbivores in coastal Cameroon. Many of the plants are common in the early succession following disturbance to the forest. Analysis of food chemistry in relation to food preference indicates that lignin, digestibility and crude protein are the most significant factors in food selection for western gorillas at this site. Food chemistry of western gorillas is compared to food chemistry of mountain gorillas in the montane forest of East Africa. Foliage consumed by western gorillas contains more condensed tannin than does foliage consumed by mountain gorillas. The greater content of condensed tannin in the leaves consumed by western gorillas is related to the greater representation of woody plants in the western diet.  相似文献

Digestibility trials using common ringtail possums ( Pseudocheirus peregrinus ), small folivorous marsupials, were used to determine effects of tannins on a herbivore which has a specialized hind gut and which normally consumes tannin-rich eucalypt leaves. In one group, untreated leaves were fed to possums, and in a second group polyethylene glycol (PEG) was added to the eucalypt leaves to inactivate tannins. Animals maintained weight, and intakes were not different between the two dietary groups. Digestibility was determined chemically. Digesta were examined histologically. The presence of bacterial rafts in the stomachs of possums fed either diet indicated that PEG did not alter the coprophagic behaviour of possums. Cell wall digestion did not appear to be inhibited by tannins. Tanning of cell contents was predominant, rather than tanning of cell walls. PEG increased faecal excretion of tannins, suggesting that some tannins from normal leaves were digested during gut passage. Dry matter digestibility was higher when animals were fed normal tannin-rich leaves than when they were fed leaves in which tannins were inactivated. The difference could be explained in part by the high digestibility of tannins. The presence of tannin did not reduce nitrogen digestion. We suggest that dissociation of tannin-protein complexes may take place in the specialized caecum. We propose that some other folivorous marsupials may have a similar capacity to overcome tannins. This capacity may allow them to consume a tannin-rich diet.  相似文献

The long-term effects of enhanced UV-B radiation on the content and composition of leaf phenolics in Epilobium angustifolium L. and Eriophorum russeolum Fries ex Hartman were studied in northern Finland (68°N) using two UV-B enhancement experiments, both simulating UV-BCIE radiation and corresponding to a 20% loss of ozone layer. High proportions of hydrolyzable tannins (69%) and condensed tannins (66%) characterized both Epilobium and Eriophorum leaves, respectively. No UV treatment effect was detected in the content or composition of Epilobium leaf soluble phenolics, whereas significant UV effects were detected in Eriophorum leaves in a developmental-specific manner. At the end of the growing season, the proportion of total soluble phenolics was higher in leaves exposed to enhanced UV-A and UV-B radiation than in the control leaves, but the phenolic composition was not significantly modified. This study introduces a new example on plants’ phenolic response to UV radiation being species-specific and detectable only at certain developmental stages. Possible consequences of increased phenolic content in forage plants for selection and digestibility by reindeer are, however, not yet known.  相似文献

Fresh, freeze-, air- and oven-dried at 60 °C and 100 °C olive leaves (OL) were studied in order to determine the effect of different drying procedures on OL chemical composition, in vitro digestibility, ruminal degradability, and intestinal digestibility. The drying procedure affected all the parameters measured except for gross energy (GE; P=0.194). Protein-bound condensed tannins (CT) decreased (P=0.001) with freeze-, air- and 60 °C drying (from 1.25 up to 0.82 g/kg dry matter, DM). Total CT were only decreased (P=0.001) by drying at 60 °C (from 10.0 to 6.24 g/kg DM). The in vitro crude protein (CP) digestibility increased (P<0.001) with drying except for oven-drying at 100 °C up to 58%. Values for CP digestibility found in freeze- and air-dried OL were not different (P>0.05). No differences (P>0.05) were observed between CP digestibility in air- and oven-dried at 60 °C OL. Effective degradability of DM and CP increased from 0.53 to 0.62 (P=0.005) and from 0.46 to 0.64 (P=0.002), respectively after treatment. The apparent intestinal digestibility of undegraded CP in the rumen was only affected (P=0.046) by oven-drying, which increased it from 0.33 to 0.39. As air-drying did not have detrimental effects on the OL nutritive value it could be an appropriate, simple and low-cost procedure for olive-leaves preservation.  相似文献

Two health problems have plagued captive common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) colonies for nearly as long as those colonies have existed: marmoset wasting syndrome and metabolic bone disease. While marmoset wasting syndrome is explicitly linked to nutrient malabsorption, we propose metabolic bone disease is also linked to nutrient malabsorption, although indirectly. If animals experience negative nutrient balance chronically, critical nutrients may be taken from mineral stores such as the skeleton, thus leaving those stores depleted. We indirectly tested this prediction through an initial investigation of digestive efficiency, as measured by apparent energy digestibility, and serum parameters known to play a part in metabolic bone mineral density of captive common marmoset monkeys. In our initial study on 12 clinically healthy animals, we found a wide range of digestive efficiencies, and subjects with lower digestive efficiency had lower serum vitamin D despite having higher food intakes. A second experiment on 23 subjects including several with suspected bone disease was undertaken to measure digestive and serum parameters, with the addition of a measure of bone mineral density by dual‐energy X‐ray absorptiometry (DEXA). Bone mineral density was positively associated with apparent digestibility of energy, vitamin D, and serum calcium. Further, digestive efficiency was found to predict bone mineral density when mediated by serum calcium. These data indicate that a poor ability to digest and absorb nutrients leads to calcium and vitamin D insufficiency. Vitamin D absorption may be particularly critical for indoor‐housed animals, as opposed to animals in a more natural setting, because vitamin D that would otherwise be synthesized via exposure to sunlight must be absorbed from their diet. If malabsorption persists, metabolic bone disease is a possible consequence in common marmosets. These findings support our hypothesis that both wasting syndrome and metabolic bone disease in captive common marmosets are consequences of inefficient nutrient absorption. Am. J. The potential of natural products to prevent obesity have been investigated, with evidence to suggest that chitosan has anti-obesity effects. The current experiment investigated the anti-obesity potential of prawn shell derived chitosan on a range of variables relevant to obesity in a pig model. The two dietary treatment groups included in this 63 day study were: T1) basal diet and T2) basal diet plus 1000 ppm chitosan (n = 20 gilts per group (70 ± 0.90 kg). The parameter categories which were assessed included: performance, nutrient digestibility, serum leptin concentrations, nutrient transporter and digestive enzyme gene expression and gut microbial populations. Pigs offered chitosan had reduced feed intake and final body weight (P< 0.001), lower ileal digestibility of dry matter (DM), gross energy (GE) (P< 0.05) and reduced coefficient of apparent total tract digestibility (CATTD) of gross energy and nitrogen (P<0.05) when compared to the basal group. Fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2) gene expression was down-regulated in pigs offered chitosan (P = 0.05) relative to the basal diet. Serum leptin concentrations increased (P< 0.05) in animals offered the chitosan diet compared to pigs offered the basal diet. Fatness traits, back-fat depth (mm), fat content (kg), were significantly reduced while lean meat (%) was increased (P<0.05) in chitosan supplemented pigs. Pigs offered chitosan had decreased numbers of Firmicutes in the colon (P <0.05), and Lactobacillus spp. in both the caecum (P <0.05) and colon (P <0.001). Bifidobacteria populations were increased in the caecum of animals offered the chitosan diet (P <0.05). In conclusion, these findings suggest that prawn shell chitosan has potent anti-obesity/body weight control effects which are mediated through multiple biological systems in vivo.  相似文献

The effects of diking on the photosynthetic rate, gross glucose production, biomass, and nutrient levels of the black mangrove Avicennia germinans L., were investigated during the major dry, the major wet and the intermediate season in completely diked mangrove areas, and compared to partially diked and non-diked biotopes. In the major dry and major wet seasons, the photosynthetic rate and gross glucose production were two to five times lower in the completely diked sites compared to the partially diked and non-diked habitats. The average dry weights of branches, flowers and leaves did not differ significantly between sites. The same held true for propagules from the major dry and major wet season. However, propagules from the transition period collected in the non-diked and partially diked biotopes yielded appreciable amounts of dry matter, while plants in the completely diked forests did not carry any propagules. No statistically significant differences were found among nutrient content in the leaves of plants from the different habitats. Our results suggest black mangrove growing in diked habitats may suffer a certain degree of environmental stress, which may affect important biological processes, such as photosynthesis, gross glucose production, and propagule formation.

Mature leaf food selection of Japanese macaques was studied in two different altitudinal zones of Yakushima: in the coniferous (1000–1200 m) and coastal forests (0–200 m). Logistic regression analysis was conducted to reveal the effect of chemical [neutral detergent fibre (NDF), crude protein, crude ash, crude lipid, condensed tannin, hydrolysable tannin and crude protein/NDF ratio] and availability properties (density of trees and total basal area) on the macaques' choice between the major food leaves and the rarely eaten or non-food leaves. In both forests, macaques selected leaves with a high crude ash and crude protein content, or a high crude protein/NDF ratio, as major foods. In the coniferous forest, macaques selected leaves with less condensed tannin, but this tendency was absent in the coastal forest. This was because macaques in the coniferous forest suffer from a greater risk of ingesting large amounts of condensed tannins, as their feeding time on mature leaves is seven times as long as that in the coastal forest. Among the chemical and availability properties, stepwise multiple regression analysis revealed that the number of trees (ha−1) was the only significant factor explaining the variations in feeding time among major food leaves, both in the coniferous and coastal forests. The present results suggest that the effect of travelling cost, which can be reduced by selecting common trees, exceeds the benefits gained by selecting high-quality foods.  相似文献

Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar L.) parr were reared for 4 months on experimental diets supplemented with Cd (0.5, 5, 25, 125, or 250 mg Cd x kg(-1)) to assess the long-term energetic changes based on the digestibility and biochemical deposition of the major dietary nutrients and to evaluate a maximum tolerable dietary toxicant concentration. Growth did not differ significantly (P>0.05) from the control groups. The biochemical composition of the carcass, but not the viscera, was negatively affected by dietary Cd exposure. The significant decreases in protein, lipid, and glycogen concentrations in the carcass (P<0.05, 25 mg x kg(-1) compared to control groups) caused a reduction in calculated whole-body energy content in fish fed 125 mg x kg(-1)compared to control groups. This reduction in calculated whole-body energy content was explained by a concurrent significant disturbance to the gastrointestinal function (measured as reduced digestibility). Only at the highest dietary Cd exposure (250 mg x kg(-1)), increased metabolic costs to cope with Cd toxicity was thought to contribute significantly to the reduction in carcass energy content. The most important factor effecting calculated total energetics was nutrient digestibility. Based on the logarithmic effective median concentration for reduced calculated energy digestibility (dietary Cd concentration corresponding to 50% reduction, EC50), the maximum tolerable dietary Cd concentration is 11 mg x kg(-1) diet.  相似文献

Despite a growing knowledge of nutrient limitation for mangrove species and how mangroves adapt to low nutrients, there is scant information about the relative importance of N:P ratio and leaf phenolics variability in determining nutrient conservation. In this study, we evaluated possible nutrient conservation strategies of a mangrove Rhizophora stylosa under nutrient limitation. 1. The leaf nutrient concentrations of R. stylosa changed with season, with the highest N concentration in winter and the highest P concentration in spring for both mature and senescent leaves. Leaf N and P concentrations decreased significantly during leaf senescence. Based on N:P ratios R. stylosa forest was N-limited. Accordingly, the nitrogen resorption efficiency (NRE) was significantly higher than phosphorus resorption efficiency (PRE) for the R. stylosa leaves during leaf senescence. The NRE and PRE both reached the highest in the autumn. Average N and P concentrations in the senescent leaves were 0.15% and 0.06% for R. stylosa, respectively, indicating a complete resorption of N and an incomplete resorption of P. There was a significant negative correlation between nitrogen resorption proficiency (NRP) and NRE, meanwhile phosphorus resorption proficiency (PRP) and PRE correlation was also highly significantly. 2. R. stylosa leaves contained relatively high tannin level. Total phenolics, extractable condensed tannins and total condensed tannins contents increased during leaf senescence, and changed between seasons. The lowest concentrations of total phenolics, extractable condensed tannins and total condensed tannins occurred in summer, total phenolics concentrations were inversely related to nitrogen or phosphorus concentrations. 3. Our results confirmed that resorption efficiency during leaf senescence depends on the type of nutrient limitation, and NRE was much higher than PRE under N-limited conditions. R. stylosa forest developed several nutrient conservation strategies in the intertidal coastline surroundings, including high nitrogen resorption efficiency, low nutrient losses and high tannins level.  相似文献
