Ovarian follicular dynamics and fluctuations in fat body, oviducal, and liver masses were studied in captive Rana cyanophlyctis in comparison with wild-caught frogs, sampled at monthly intervals over a period of 12 months. In both the captive and wild-caught frogs first growth phase (FGP) and second growth phase (SGP) or vitellogenic oocytes were produced throughout the period examined; however, changes in ovarian and oviducal weights were less marked in the former group. In the captive frogs SGP oocyte production was reduced by 50%, and, maximum ovarian weight and SGP oocyte number were attained 2-3 months earlier than in wild-caught controls. The FGP oocyte pool in laboratory-maintained frogs, however, was comparable with that of the corresponding wild-caught frogs. Captivity caused a threefold increase in atresia and reduced the number of oocytes reaching SGP. The depletion of fat stores in fat bodies during the later phases of captivity suggests that the deposition of lipids into oocytes (for SGP) was given priority over storage in the fat bodies. The low oviducal weights of captive frogs was correlated with a reduced number of SGP oocytes, which are the source of estrogen. On the other hand, liver weight remained high, indicating adequate hepatic vitellogenin synthesis. Possible reduction in its output was not detected, possibly due to the reduced number of follicles reaching SGP. The findings indicate that stress of captivity decreases gonadotrophins and estrogen levels. Oviducal growth is reduced in captive frogs.(ABSTRACT TRUNCATED AT 250 WORDS)  相似文献

Abstract. Stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans L.) deprived of a bloodmeal until 3 days post-emergence had higher mortality rates than control flies fed from the day of emergence. Fat bodies of deprived females required one more bloodmeal to reach maximum size, and maximum size was smaller, than fat bodies of control females. Ovarian development did not commence prior to feeding in deprived flies, and proceeded more slowly thereafter, resulting in a one bloodmeal delay in egg maturation in deprived flies. Deprived females produced fewer (54.7, SD 2.8) eggs than controls (75.9, SD 3.7) and eggs from deprived females were smaller (mean length 684.0 μrn) than control females' eggs (mean length 1165.7 μm).  相似文献

InDermacentor variabilis (Say), the onset of vitellogenin production and vitellogenesis (up-take of vitellogenin into oocytes) began during the rapid-engorgement feeding period. Mating was required for both vitellogenin production and vitellogenesis to complete the tick's life cycle. Complete immunological identity, as measured by Ouchterlony's double diffusion test, existed between vitellogenin from the fat body, midgut and hemolymph, and vitellin from the ovaries and eggs. Antivitellin antibody did not react with host hemoglobin nor with fat body, midgut, and ovary extracts from feeding females prior to rapid engorgement, feeding unmated females, or unfed or fed males. Some unmated females fed for 13 days and then hand-detached from the host eventually began oviposition after going through a preoviposition period. In these ticks, organ extracts from the midgut, fat body and ovary reacted with antivitellin antibody. The presence or absence of presumed vitellogenic cells in the midgut and yolk bodies in oocytes corresponded with the presence or absence of vitellogenin and vitellogenesis as measured by Ouchterlony's test. Presumed vitellogenic cells increased in size during the preoviposition period. These cells reached their greatest size during the time when the most eggs were being produced, and then declined in size toward the end of oviposition. Vitellogenin was deposited directly into developing yolk bodies in oocytes and was not processed through lysosomes. Feeding was the process that initiated the formation of eggshell cuticle. Detachment from the host was required for the initiation of oviposition.  相似文献

Summary A developmental study at the electron microscopic level was conducted of the fat body cells of Hyalophora cecropia (L.). During the last larval instar the fat body increases in volume and the cells exhibit a well developed rough endoplasmic reticulum and protein bodies of diverse sizes. In the pupal fat body, the protein bodies appear to be enclosed by a double membrane and contain glycogen granules, ribosomes and mitochondrion-like structures. In addition, there are large lipid globules, cytolysomes and rough endoplasmic reticulum. The ultrastructure of the protein bodies suggests the development of large bodies by fusion of smaller protein bodies. Changes in fat body cell ultrastructure were followed during adult development and cytological evidence was obtained for the depletion of protein, glycogen and lipid in the female during this period. The female adult fat body cell contains free ribosomes, protein bodies, many mitochondria, a few lipid globules and glycogen granules. The male moth fat body cells have many mitochondria, a few glycogen granules, essentially no protein bodies, but an abundance of large lipid globules.Studies on the influence of egg maturation on the morphology of the fat body of Hyalophora gloveri (L.) revealed that ovariectomy of pupae yielded adults having more fat body than normal females, and that the fat body cells of the ovariectomized animals contained more glycogen, lipid and protein. Male pupae receiving ovarian implants developed into adults containing eggs and possessed more fat body than normal females but less than normal males. Very few glycogen granules were found in the fat body cells of normal males or males with implanted ovaries.Supported by grant AM-02818 from the National Institutes of Health. We thank Dr. James Oschman for his helpful suggestions and constructive criticisms.  相似文献

We examined the accumulation of lipids in adult females of the mosquito, Aedes aegypti. Females emerged with about 100 μg lipid in the fat body. With access to sugar water lipids increased over seven days to 300 μg. After a blood meal on day five, sugar-fed females accumulated 120-140 μg of lipids in their ovaries within 2 days. At the same time the lipid content of the fat body decreased by 100 μg, indicating transfer of lipids from fat body to oocytes. Experiments in which fat body lipids were prelabelled support this conclusion. Label was transferred to oocytes: in mature oocytes the specific radioactivity of lipids was 80% of the specific radioactivity of prelabeled fat body lipids. Components of blood meals are also used to synthesize oocyte lipids. Fat bodies of females starved for four days had only 27 μg of lipids left. When these females were given a blood meal, they matured oocytes, although the number of ooyctes was reduced and ovaries contained only half the amount of lipids found in ovaries of females which had first fed on sugar water. Fat body lipids of these females had only slightly increased to 36 μg. This demonstrates that female Ae. aegypti use sugar to synthesize lipids, but they can also use components of blood for this purpose.  相似文献

Though the African clawed frog (Xenopus laevis) is the most commonly used amphibian in biological research, there are no standard protocols for the husbandry of this species. With the goal of developing optimal conditions for raising these frogs, the authors assessed the effects of available cover and feeding schedule on post-metamorphic growth and behavior of juvenile X. laevis. Frogs, which were housed four per tank, had access to varying numbers of shelters (zero, two or four) and were fed either daily or episodically (three times per week) over a period of 6 months. Though X. laevis growth was not influenced by the availability of cover, frogs that were fed daily grew larger than frogs that were fed episodically. Additionally, frogs that were fed daily and had no access to cover were most likely to exhibit foraging behavior when disturbed. These results suggest that feeding frogs daily will promote growth and fecundity. Furthermore, although labs often provide frogs with hiding places, such cover does not enhance X. laevis growth.  相似文献

Growth, body composition and plasma growth hormone levels were recorded weekly for 24 weeks in rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss . Underyearling rainbow trout were individually identified using coded tags and placed on either a cyclic feeding regime of 3 weeks of deprivation followed by 3 weeks of feeding or a daily feeding regime. No significant difference was found in standard length and mass among the cyclically fed and daily fed fish at the end of the experiment. For cyclically fed fish, the absolute specific growth rate and condition factor reached a maximum during the last week of refeeding. Cyclically fed fish had a significantly higher moisture and protein content and lower lipid levels relative to fish fed daily. Absolute mass and fat loss in the deprivation phase of the feeding cycle decreased in intensity with subsequent feeding cycles, indicating that the fish were acclimatizing to the feeding regime. It was proposed that this response was an adaptation against possible adverse effects in the adults ( e.g. locomotor performance, bone ossification rates, fat deposition rate, growth rate and age at sexual maturity). Plasma growth hormone concentrations were not affected by cyclic feeding indicating that variations in plasma growth hormone concentration are not the cause of compensatory growth in rainbow trout.  相似文献

Abstract. Dissection of flies caught in northern Norway revealed that only mated, gravid females of H.tarandi (L.) and larviparous C.trompe (Modeer) were caught in host-mimicking C02-baited traps. Trapped females had the same gonotrophic and fat body (FB) conditions as females caught on and around reindeer. Most trapped females of both species were of middle to old age, having only one-half to no FB reserves left and only a few to moderate numbers of eggs or larvae remaining. Most young females trapped also had previously oviposited or larviposited at least once, and some newly eclosed, mated females were present throughout the fly season. Based on the known location of reindeer herds, it was evident that trapped flies that had recently oviposited or larviposited had dispersed into the trapping area from 25–100 km away. Declining FB reserves sustained wild-caught C.trompe females (and in utero larvae) in the laboratory for 14 days and H.tarandi females for 18 days. Reserve FB also was depleted during long flights. Females of both species that flew for the longest times (5.1–11.7 h) on a laboratory flight mill had low FB reserves, but nearly maximum numbers of eggs or larvae. Conversely, most females that flew for less than 5 h on the flight mill had little or no FB remaining, and few eggs or larvae. The large FB reserves accumulated as larvae feed in the vertebrate host enable the non-feeding adults to survive and infect their hosts even after prolonged periods of flight-inhibiting climatic conditions.  相似文献

A three factorial designed feeding experiment with common carp (Cyprinus carpio L.) was carried out in an intensive experimental rearing system. Fish (initial body weight 200 g) were fed on two different levels of dietary energy (16 and 18 MJ DE/kg DM), two different levels of protein (320 and 420 g CP/kg DM) and also two different feeding intensities (100% and 75% of the maximum intake). The experiment was terminated when fish reached a mean body weight of 1300 g.

Growth, feed utilization and nutrient composition of the whole body and fillet were observed. The highest growth was obtained when the fish were fed on the diet containing high dietary energy and high dietary protein with satiation feeding. High dietary energy, high dietary protein and restriction of feed intake improved feed conversion ratios. High dietary energy, low dietary protein and restrictive feeding increased energy utilization. Low dietary protein and restrictive feeding resulted in better protein utilization.

Fish fed with high dietary energy contained more fat and less protein in their carcasses. A lower fat content but higher protein and higher ash content in fish carcasses was shown when fish were fed with a diet high in protein and fed restrictively.  相似文献

1. Individual fitness is often assumed to be positively correlated with body size, but this has rarely been explored under realistic field conditions. This assumption was tested in a minute parasitoid foraging for planthopper eggs in saltmarsh habitats. 2. We used a novel sampling technique that captures females as they naturally die and fall off the vegetation, and estimated their oviposition success according to the number of eggs remaining in their bodies. 3. Our results support a positive relationship between oviposition success and body size of female parasitoids. 4. Only a single female had exhausted her eggs before she died suggesting that the larger body size advantage is not realised primarily via increased fecundity, but instead via increased longevity or foraging‐efficiency.  相似文献

Polyclonal antibodies directed against D. variabilis vitellin were utilized for immunocytochemistry at the ultrastructural level. We localized vitellogenin (Vg) in rough endoplasmic reticulum cisternae, secretory granules and secreted products of fat body trophocytes and midgut vitellogenic cells from feeding and ovipositing females. Vg was localized in the oocyte Golgi bodies and in the yolk bodies of both feeding and ovipositing females. Uptake of exogenous Vg was indicated by the presence of immunospecific gold probe in coated pits and coated vesicles at the apical plasma membrane of oocytes from females in rapid engorgement and oviposition. In unmated females little detectable evidence of Vg uptake by developing oocytes suggests that mating and host detachment signal the beginning of vitellogenesis. We conclude that fat body trophocytes, midgut vitellogenic cells and oocytes are involved in the synthesis and/or processing of Vg and that feeding is the signal associated with the initiation of Vg synthesis and/or processing.  相似文献

Density-dependent factors frequently have been shown to regulate population parameters of free-living and parasitic helminths. To test the effects of various infection levels of Haemonchus contortus on fecundity and worm size, lambs were inoculated with 3,000, 10,000, and 30,000 infective larvae. Daily eggs per gram (epg) and daily total fecal production per lamb were monitored continuously. Worms were collected from abomasa on 6, 15, 22, and 30 days postinfection (PI). Female worms were smaller on each day in the high-dose group when compared to female worms from the low-dose group; males in the high-dose group were smaller from days 15 through 30 PI. The high- and medium-dose groups had higher mortality rates on day 30 PI, and fecundity (eggs/female/day) was 78% lower. Daily epg and daily total eggs/lamb/day were lower in the high-dose group. Fecundity and worm size were correlated with the log-transformed dose level but not with adult worm number. Early parasite and/or host responses apparently exert long-term negative effects on growth and reproduction relative to the size of the establishing population of H. contortus.  相似文献

The ovarian cycle ofRana tigrina was analysed by quantifying the developing oocytes (classified into stages on the basis of diameter) and atretic ones at monthly intervals. Stages I to IV represent oocytes in the first growth phase and the remaining ones the vitellogenic or second growth phase. Stages I–III occurred year round but exhibited significant variation in their number. The number of stage II oocytes always dominated the other stages. Recruitment of oocytes to stages IV and V in April marked the initiation of vitellogenic growth in all specimens. Of the 30 to 35% second growth phase oocytes, 25 to 28% reached ovulatory sizes by June. After spawning the ovarian mass declined drastically from 15 to 0.2% of body mass in July. Atresia was maximal (5%) in August. In other months, it was less than 1.5% of the total oocytes. Oogenic episodes occurred in March and July yielding new oocytes. The number of first growth phase oocytes fluctuated from 65 to 95%. The fluctuation was inversely correlated with the second growth phase oocytes indicating a 30 to 35% annual turnover rate of oocytes in the frog. The final egg number/ovarian mass is positively correlated with the snout-vent length as well as body mass of the frogs.R. tigrina produces about 4000 eggs/100g body mass. Further, the mean number of yolky eggs/100 g body mass and the total volume (V) of eggs/frog were highly correlated. Frogs living in captivity produced fewer eggs compared to the wild ones (3594 ± 227 in captivevs 4704 ± 317 in wild frogs). Also, these frogs failed to breed though they showed amplexus with breeding males. Injection of desoxycorticosterone acetate however induced spawning in 4 out of 5 frogs. They released about 3000 eggs each. Captivity seems to mainly impair breeding and to a little extent the vitellogenic growth of oocytes inR. tigrina.  相似文献

Diacylglycerol (DG) comprises up to approximately 10% of various edible oils. In the present study, we examined the effects of dietary DG consisting mainly of 1,3-species on body weight, body fat accumulation, and mRNA levels of various genes involved in energy homeostasis in obesity-prone C57BL/6J mice. Five-month feeding with the high triacylglycerol (TG) diet (30% TG + 13% sucrose) resulted in significant increases in body weight, visceral fat accumulation, and circulating insulin and leptin levels compared with mice fed the control diet (5% TG). Compared with mice fed the high TG diet, body weight gain and visceral fat weight were reduced by 70% and 79%, respectively, in those fed the high DG diet (30% DG + 13% sucrose). In addition, circulating leptin and insulin levels were reduced to the respective control levels. Compared with high TG feeding, high DG feeding suppressed the elevation of leptin mRNA expression in adipose tissue, and up-regulated acyl-coenzyme (Co)A oxidase and acyl-CoA synthase mRNA expression in the liver. These results indicate that dietary DG is beneficial for suppression of high fat diet-induced body fat accumulation. Furthermore, it is suggested that structural differences in DG and TG, but not the composition of fatty acid, markedly affect nutritional behavior of lipids. -- Murase, T., T. Mizuno, T. Omachi, K. The effect of dietary fat on body composition, whole body lipogenesis, and enzyme activity was measured in rats over the first 16 weeks post-weaning. Rats were fed either a low fat (5% w/w fat) or high fat (20% w/w fat) diet for the first 4 weeks. After this time all rats were fed the low fat diet. The results showed no significant effect of diet on the rate of fat synthesis over the first 8 weeks of the experiment. However, the activities of the enzymes of fatty acid synthesis [glucose 6-phosphate dehydrogenase, malic enzyme, adenosine triphosphate-citrate lyase, acetyl-coenzyme A carboxylase (ACCX), fatty acid synthetase] were dependent on the age and dietary status of the animals. The exact pattern depended on the specific enzyme and the tissue source. No significant differences in pyruvate dehydrogenase (PDH) activity were observed. Mathematical analysis of the enzyme activities suggested that ACCX and PDH were the most likely sites of fat synthesis regulation. In addition, an examination of body composition and overall weight retention showed that the "weight increasing" effect of a high fat diet could be completely reversed by subsequent feeding of a low fat diet. However, the reversal required an additional 12 weeks. Interestingly, at this time the rats switched from a high fat to a low fat diet had a lower body weight and lower body fat content than rats fed a low fat diet throughout the course of the experiment.  相似文献

Endoreduplication or nuclear genome replication without cell division is widely observed in the metabolically active tissues of plants and animals. The fat body cells of adult female insects produce abundant yolk proteins and become polyploid, which is assumed to accelerate egg production. Recently, it was reported that in termites, endopolyploidy in the fat body occurs only in queens but not in the other females; however, the relationship between the fecundity and ploidy level in the fat body remains unclear. Termite queens exhibit a huge variation in their egg‐producing capacity among different species; queens in the species with a foraging lifestyle, in which workers leave the nest to forage outside, are much more fecund than those in the species living in a single piece of wood. In this study, we conducted ploidy analyses on three foragings and three wood‐dwelling termites via flow cytometry. In all the species, the fat body of queens contained significantly more polyploid cells than that of other nonreproductive females, considering their body size effect. However, the male fat body, which is not involved in yolk production, did not show consistency in polyploid cell numbers among the species studied. Moreover, highly fecund queens in foraging termites exhibit higher levels of endopolyploidy in their fat body than those with less fecundity in wood‐dwelling termites. These results suggest that endopolyploidy in the fat body of termite queens can boost their egg production, and the level of endopolyploidy in their fat body is linked to their fecundity. Our study provides a novel insight into the evolutionary relationship between endoreduplication and caste specialization in social insects.  相似文献

Intake of food, protein, fat and carbohydrates and their fecal output and the birds' weights were recorded during different feeding trials with specific nutrient reduced diets in the old-world long-distance migratory garden warbler. The birds' body weights were affected by low dietary protein as well as low dietary fat levels. Low dietary protein and fat levels were associated with significant changes in daily gross and net food intake and in the efficiency of food and nutrient utilization. Birds fed on diets with low nutrient levels for an extended length of time recovered in weight after an initial weight loss. They obviously compensated the restricted nutrient levels primarily by increasing the daily food intake and by changing the efficiency of food and nutrient utilization. Effects of restricted dietary nutrient levels on body weight and adaptation depended on the previous composition of the food. The average daily net fat intake was much higher than the average daily net protein intake, both for maintenance of a constant body weight and for successful regain of weight. The data were further discussed with respect to the role of a fruit diet in omnivorous passerine birds.  相似文献

Frogs, R. cyanophlyctis (n = 45) divided into four groups, were exposed to different feeding regimens (live guppies were used as food) such as, daily, alternate day, every fourth day and weekly feeding for 5 months, during wet months of the year (April-September). Two toe clippings were made, one at the beginning and the other at the termination of the experiment. Clipped toes were demineralized, and processed for histology. In 6 out of 45 frogs one line of arrested growth (LAG) was present in the phalangeal histology at the beginning of the experiment while, at the termination of experiment 34 out of 43 frogs exhibited one LAG each indicating that in 26 frogs LAG appeared freshly during the experimental period. The fact that LAGs are formed in regularly fed frogs suggests the humid weather/seasonal rainfall may play relatively important role than the feeding in cyclic bone growth and formation of growth marks in this frog.  相似文献

We evaluated the effects of difructose anhydride III (DFAIII) on body weights of ovariectomized rats, which are a good model for obesity by estrogen deficiency-induced overeating. Female rats (10 weeks old) were subjected to ovariectomy or sham operation and then fed with or without a diet containing 3% or 6% DFAIII for 33 days or pair-fed control diet during the same period. Rats fed DFAIII showed significantly decreased food intake, energy intake, body weight gain, body energy accumulation, and fat tissue weight than control group, regardless of ovariectomy. DFAIII may decrease body fat dependent of reduced food/energy intake. Compared with the respective pair feeding groups, rats fed DFAIII showed significantly decreased body energy and fat tissue weight, regardless of ovariectomy, suggesting its potential as a low-energy substitute for high-energy sweeteners. The low energy of DFAIII may contribute to decreased body fat, which may not be dependent on obesity.  相似文献
