Having been approached from time to time by various museum, university and governmental authorities in Australia, California and Scotland, I have set down some brief notes on the scientific, medical, dental and educational importance and value of collections of recent human skeletons drawn from populations in all parts of the world. This article does not pretend to completeness. It has been set down in the hope that it may be of assistance to those officiers in charge of such collections and who may be pondering upon the worthwhileness of such collections being retained and maintained.  相似文献

Stephen Jay Gould is rightly remembered for many different kinds of contributions to our intellectual life. I focus on his criticisms of uses of evolutionary ideas to defend inegalitarian doctrines and on his attempts to expand the framework of Darwinian evolutionary theory. I argue that his important successes in the former sphere are applications of the idea of local critique, grounded in careful attention to the details of the inegalitarian proposals. As he became more concerned with the second project, Gould was inclined to suggest that the abuses of evolutionary ideas rested on an insufficiently expanded Darwinism. I suggest that what is valuable in Gould's contribution to general evolutionary theory is the original claim about punctuated equilibrium (advanced, with Niles Eldredge in1972), and the careful defense of that claim through the accumulation of paleontological evidence. I try to show that the more ambitious program of a hierarchical expansion of neo-Darwinism is misguided, and that the endeavor to go beyond local critique fails.  相似文献

This article about medical anthropology was inspired by the work of Pierre Bourdieu, specifically, his efforts to reconcile the antinomy of a "social structuralist" and a "cultural constructivist" perspective. These perspectives are often opposed in the literature, but, in Bourdieu's view, human life cannot be studied without taking into account both how individuals are situated within and constrained by social structures and how those individuals construct an understanding of and impose meaning on the world around them. I argue that the special subject matter of medical anthropology--human health--demands that a synthetic approach be taken in our theory and research. I illustrate this argument with examples from my own research on social and cultural factors associated with blood pressure, and I point to other examples of this synthesis in medical anthropology. The results of this research hold promise for the continuing refinement of culture theory.  相似文献

Why did Darwin fail to develop his insights on kin selection into a proper theory of social adaptation? One suggestion has been that his inadequate understanding of heredity kept the problem out of focus. Here, I determine whether it is possible to develop a quantitative theory of kin selection upon the assumption of blending inheritance. I find that, whilst Hamilton's rule of kin selection can be readily derived under the assumption of blending inheritance, this mechanism complicates the computation of relatedness coefficients, and can even cause them to fluctuate over generations. Nevertheless, I show that the ultimate criterion for selection to favour any social trait - i.e. a time-average of Hamilton's rule - remains the same as under particulate inheritance. By eliminating the gene from the theory of kin selection, I clarify the role that it plays in the theory of social adaptation.  相似文献

Ludwik Fleck’s theory of thought-styles has been hailed as a pioneer of constructivist science studies and sociology of scientific knowledge. But this consensus ignores an important feature of Fleck’s epistemology. At the core of his account is the ideal of ‘objective truth, clarity, and accuracy’. I begin with Fleck’s account of modern natural science, locating the ideal of scientific objectivity within his general social epistemology. I then draw on Fleck’s view of scientific objectivity to improve upon reflexive accounts of the origin and development of the theory of thought-styles, and reply to objections that Fleck’s epistemological stance is self-undermining or inconsistent. Explicating the role of scientific objectivity in Fleck’s epistemology reveals his view to be an internally consistent alternative to recent social accounts of scientific objectivity by Harding, Daston and Galison. I use these contrasts to indicate the strengths and weaknesses of Fleck’s innovative social epistemology, and propose modifications to address the latter. The result is a renewed version of Fleck’s social epistemology, which reconciles commitment to scientific objectivity with integrated sociology, history and philosophy of science.  相似文献

California, Arizona, and several other states have recently legalized medical marijuana. My goal in this paper is to demonstrate that even if one grants the opponents of legalization many of their contentious assumptions, the federal government is still obligated to take several specific steps toward the legalization of medical marijuana. I defend this claim against a variety of objections, including the claims: that marijuana is unsafe, that marijuana cannot be adequately tested or produced as a drug, that the availability of synthetic THC makes marijuana superfluous, and especially that legalizing medical marijuana will increase recreational use by 'sending the wrong message '. I then go on to argue that given the intransigent position of the federal government on this issue, state governments are justified in unilaterally legalizing medical marijuana as an act of civil disobedience.
A large portion of this paper consists of an extensive response to the objection that legalizing medical marijuana will 'send the wrong message '– which I take to be the primary impediment to legalization. This objection basically claims that the consequences of withholding legalization (especially preventing increased recreational use) are superior to those of legalizing medical marijuana. I argue that legalization is justified even if one were to grant both that the harms of legalization outweighed its benefits and that utilitarianism is true. This requires a subtle and somewhat extended discussion of utilitarian moral and political theory.  相似文献

This essay explores the dialogue between the local quest for healing and the anthropological quest for healing knowledge, and local assessments of knowledge-power relationships in these processes. The context is medical discourse among the Tuareg of Niger Republic, West Africa, and my research experiences among these people. I examine local medical specialists and their traditional and changing practice in terms of how they perceive and respond to wider knowledge and power systems that impinge on local health care. Paramount in these systems are central state policies and medical anthropological research on healing, as these intersect in a postcolonial and post-separatist/rebellion setting. The essay analyzes parallels between the exchange of medicine and the exchange of knowledge and reflects upon how anthropological knowledge of African healing systems is constructed in an environment highly charged with power and danger--of political violence and economic crisis. The broader issue addressed here is how to give greater empowerment to local residents' voices in their "indigenous critique" of the medical anthropological project.  相似文献

Drawing on Christopher Boorse's Biostatistical Theory (BST), Norman Daniels contends that a genuine health need is one which is necessary to restore normal functioning – a supposedly objective notion which he believes can be read from the natural world without reference to potentially controversial normative categories. But despite his claims to the contrary, this conception of health harbors arbitrary evaluative judgments which make room for intractable disagreement as to which conditions should count as genuine health needs and therefore which needs should be met. I begin by offering a brief summary of Boorse's BST, the theory to which Daniels appeals for providing the conception of health as normal functioning upon which his overall distributive scheme rests. Next, I consider what I call practical objections to Daniels's use of Boorse's theory. Finally I recount Elseljin Kingma's theoretical objection to Boorse's BST and discuss its impact on Daniels's overall theory. Though I conclude that Boorse's view, so weakened, will no longer be able to sustain the judgments which Daniels's theory uses it to reach, in the end, I offer Daniels an olive branch by briefly sketching an alternative strategy for reaching suitably objective conclusions regarding the health and/or disease status of various conditions.  相似文献

In the mid-1800s, there was much debate about the origin or ‘exciting cause’ of cholera. Despite much confusion surrounding the disease, the so-called miasma theory emerged as the prevalent account about cholera’s cause. Going against this mainstream view, the British physician John Snow inferred several things about cholera’s origin and pathology that no one else inferred. Without observing the vibrio cholerae, however,—data unavailable to Snow and his colleagues—, there was no way of settling the question of what exactly was causing cholera and how, or if, it was passed on. The question then arises as to how Snow arrived at conclusions so systematically different from those of his opponents. In this paper, I want to look at Snow’s reasoning in some detail, and show that there were certain principles, explanatory power in particular, that were epistemologically important to Snow in their own right. I will show that Snow himself takes explanatory power to be an epistemic property, and makes explicit links between explanatory power and confirmation. Systematically juxtaposing Snow’s claims and his opponents’, I will show that Snow was right to tout the explanatory power of his theory, and that his conclusions about the epistemic superiority of his theory over that of the miasmatists’ were justified.  相似文献

目的 研究中国省际卫生资源对医院创新的影响与空间溢出效应。方法 基于2000—2014年31个省份的面板数据,以各省份医院专利数量表示医院创新并作为被解释变量,以各省份医疗机构床位数、人均GDP、医疗卫生支出等变量作为解释变量,运用面板空间杜宾的计量方法分别对全部省份,东部、中部、西部省份进行回归。结果 医疗卫生资源不仅对本省份医院创新有显著的促进作用,而且还会显著影响相邻省份的医院创新,即存在溢出效应;本省份医疗资源对本省份和邻省份医院创新的促进效果大体相当;东部、中部省份医疗资源对本省份医院创新作用显著,中部省份存在溢出效应。结论 进一步增加医疗卫生资源投入,搭建省际之间资源与创新交流平台,促进东、西部省份溢出效应的提升,以创新推动供给侧改革。  相似文献

An important element of Ernest Gellner's defence of his segmentarity theory of Berber politics was his claim that this theory can trace its origins to the work of the nineteenth-century French ethnologist Émile Masqueray, whose study of the Berbers of Algeria was cited by Durkheim to illustrate his concept of 'segmental social organization'. The implication of Gellner's claim was that the segmentarity theory applied to Algerian as well as Moroccan Berbers and that Masqueray and his predecessors should be seen as precursors of the segmentarity theory rather than as the originators of a distinct and rival vision. I argue that Gellner's reading of these authors was mistaken, that their approach to the understanding of Berber political life was profoundly different from, and arguably superior to, the segmentarist perspective which supplanted it, and that the construction which Durkheim placed upon their findings was entirely groundless.  相似文献

The facilities available to disabled people living in Scotland were studied by visiting and interviewing a group of 50 paraplegics living in Glasgow and the surrounding counties. The degree of unemployment in the group (74%) was far greater than has been reported in other surveys, and no quadriplegic was in remunerative employment. Though the general unemployment level in the area is high services to help the disabled gain employment were only partially utilized.Liaison between social workers was not always successful. Some paraplegics were visited at home by both a medical social worker and a local authority social worker, while others were not supported by either. There was no apparent attempt by local authorities to identify the disabled, as is required in England under Section 1 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act, 1970. Several paraplegics lacked facilities which are covered by Section 2 of the Act. The exclusion of Scotland from Sections 1 and 2 of the Chronically Sick and Disabled Persons Act may widen the differences between the two countries as the Scottish legislation is less specific.  相似文献

This article focuses on the life history of a single street boy in northwestern Tanzania, whom I name Juma. I suggest that Juma's experiences and the life trajectory of himself and of significant individuals around him (particularly his mother) were structured by everyday violence. I describe everyday violence in terms of a conjuncture between macrostructural forces in East Africa (including a history of failed development schemes and the contemporary political economy of neoliberalism) and the lived experience of individuals as they negotiate local, contextual factors (including land-tenure practices, the power dynamics between immediate and extended kin, life on the streets, and constructions of gender and sexuality). I suggest that AIDS and its many impacts on Juma's life course can only be understood in a broader context of everyday violence. From this basis, I draw several general conclusions regarding AIDS prevention and intervention strategies.  相似文献

Census reports and information in burial records of Manti, Utah from 1849 to July 1977 are examined in order to (1)document mortality trends and differentials by age, sex, cause-of-death, and seasonality as Manti passed from a frontier settlement to a rural agricultural community; and (2) ascertain whether the shifts in the cause-of-death structure follow those patterns outlined by Omran (1971, 1974, 1977) in his theory of the epidemiologic transition. Findings parallel patterns suggested by Omran. Major factors accounting for mortality reductions are (1) elimination of the population's dependence upon a contaminated water supply, and (2) adoption of medical advances as they became available.  相似文献

Male Puget Sound white-crowned sparrows, Zonotrichia leucophrys pugetensis, form large vocal dialects along the Pacific northwest coast of North America. Most adult males sing a single song dialect throughout their lives. To determine how dialects are maintained in this species, I studied two populations at the Columbia River mouth in a contact zone between two dialects. Singers of each of the two dialects clustered together in space, forming local song 'neighbourhoods'. Two hypotheses for the maintenance of dialects were tested. The late acquisition hypothesis predicts that yearling or adult male immigrants memorize their song from the territory neighbours they settle next to. The selective attrition hypothesis predicts that males memorize a variety of dialects early in life, overproduce song dialects upon arrival, and later selectively retain the one prelearned dialect that best matches what their neighbours sing. In 1997 and 1998, 35-40% of new territory occupants sang two dialects upon arrival in April, and then over the course of days to several weeks, discarded one dialect from their repertoire. Fourteen of 16 (88%) kept as their adult song the dialect that matched the dialect sung by the majority of their neighbours. No male added a new dialect to his repertoire after arrival, nor did males alter their retained dialect to more closely resemble their neighbours' songs. New arrivals that overproduced dialects upon arrival were significantly more likely to match their neighbours' dialect than males that did not overproduce upon arrival. In a playback experiment, males in the overproduction stage engaged in matched countersinging to the dialect played to them. These observations and the experiment support the selective attrition hypothesis: males visit and memorize a variety of dialects, probably in their hatching-year summer, overproduce dialects upon arrival the next spring, and then selectively retain the one dialect that matches the local song culture. Vocal plasticity late in life is not the result of a late sensitive phase for song memorization, but rather results from behavioural selection operating on a pre-existing repertoire of song dialects. This paper follows the testimony of Izzeldin Abuelaish, a Palestinian physician who bears witness to his experiences working, living, and suffering under Israeli rule. He presents his story as a doctor’s story, drawing on his identity as a medical professional to gain credibility and visibility and to challenge the limited legitimacy of Palestinian grievances. In this paper, I explore his testimony as a medical voice that at once recounts the suffering and loss endured by the Palestinian people and also struggles to negotiate the values associated with being a “reliable” witness. Consequently, I ethnographically examine the social life and reception of his story in Jewish-Israeli publics. In comparison with most Palestinian narratives, Abuelaish’s testimony achieved an extremely rare degree of visibility and sympathy, a phenomenon that calls out for analysis. I identify the boundaries that typically render Palestinian grievances invisible to Israeli publics and suggest how medicine’s self-proclaimed ethos of neutrality served as a channel for crossing them. Finally, I reflect on the political possibilities and limitations of medical witnessing to render suffering visible and arouse compassion toward those construed as a dangerous/enemy Other.  相似文献
