We investigated the distribution of living (stained) benthic foraminifera across a tropical, intertidal shoreline adjacent to Cocoa Creek, Queensland, Australia for the purpose of better understanding the nature of test production and ultimately fossil assemblage development within such environments. Short cores (up to 1 m) were collected during the wet and dry season, along an elevational gradient comprising non-vegetated intertidal mudflat and higher-intertidal mangrove forest environments. The distribution of stained specimens can be broadly delineated into assemblages characterising ‘upper mangrove’ (2.64–2.91 m above Lowest Astronomical Tide (LAT)) and ‘low mangrove-mudflat’ (1.62–2.18 m above LAT) environments. Agglutinated species were generally limited to upper mangrove stations. Calcareous species occurred within all of the intertidal environments examined but differ in their composition between upper and lower intertidal settings. Upper mangrove faunas were characterised by the agglutinated species Arenoparrella mexicana, Haplophragmoides wilberti, Miliammina fusca, Miliammina obliqua and Trochammina inflata and the calcareous species Helenina anderseni. Live (stained) assemblages at lower intertidal elevations were dominated by the calcareous species Ammonia aoteana, as well as Rosalina spp., Elphidium oceanicum, Triloculina oblonga, Ammonia pustulosa and Shackoinella globosa.  相似文献

Mohlerina basiliensis (Mohler, 1938) represents a common, cosmopolitan, shallow-water Middle Jurassic–Early Cretaceous trochospiral foraminifer. Given the numerous illustrations from thin-section specimens in the literature displaying tests dispersed within the matrix (micritic and sparitic), a free, vagile benthic mode of life is generally suggested. As an exceptional case, specimens are found with their tests attached to a variety of hard substrates, thus creating a special elevated microhabitat. The fixation is due to a calcitic cement. With its facultative sessile mode of life, Mohlerina can be compared with several modern calcareous trochospiral rotaliacean foraminifera (e.g., Ammonia, Cibicides, Discorbis). The rare preservation of fixed Mohlerina in situ is most likely due to physical taphonomic degradation (e.g., breakage). Tests of Mohlerina attached to hard substrates were found in both low- and high-energy paleoenvironments. The high test variability of Mohlerina might be influenced by the different settling strategies and substrate surface topographies within different paleohabitats.  相似文献

Ocean acidification causes biodiversity loss, alters ecosystems, and may impact food security, as shells of small organisms dissolve easily in corrosive waters. There is a suggestion that photosynthetic organisms could mitigate ocean acidification on a local scale, through seagrass protection or seaweed cultivation, as net ecosystem organic production raises the saturation state of calcium carbonate making seawater less corrosive. Here, we used a natural gradient in calcium carbonate saturation, caused by shallow‐water CO2 seeps in the Mediterranean Sea, to assess whether seaweed that is resistant to acidification (Padina pavonica) could prevent adverse effects of acidification on epiphytic foraminifera. We found a reduction in the number of species of foraminifera as calcium carbonate saturation state fell and that the assemblage shifted from one dominated by calcareous species at reference sites (pH ~8.19) to one dominated by agglutinated foraminifera at elevated levels of CO2 (pH ~7.71). It is expected that ocean acidification will result in changes in foraminiferal assemblage composition and agglutinated forms may become more prevalent. Although Padina did not prevent adverse effects of ocean acidification, high biomass stands of seagrass or seaweed farms might be more successful in protecting epiphytic foraminifera.  相似文献

The classification of the Foraminifera, a widely distributed group of largely marine protists, has traditionally been based on morphological characters. The most important of these are the composition and structure of the shell or "test." Here, we use both phylogenetic analysis of the genes for small subunit rRNA and beta-tubulin and ultrastructural analysis to document a reversion in wall type from more derived calcareous tests to an agglutinated test. These data indicate that the genus Miliammina, and possibly other members of the Rzehakinidae, should be placed in the Order Miliolida as opposed to their current assignment in Order Textulariida. We also address the effects this reversion may have had on the ability of rzehakinacids to effectively colonize marginal marine environments. Finally, the hypothesis that some multilocular agglutinated foraminiferans descended from calcareous lineages has implications for interpretation of the foraminiferal fossil record.  相似文献

Foraminiferal assemblages have been collected from ten intertidal study areas situated on the east, south and west coasts of the UK. The assemblages display a vertical zonation which indicates that the distribution of foraminifera in these intertidal environments is usually the direct function of altitude with the duration and frequency of intertidal exposure the most important factors. Multivariate analyses separate foraminiferal assemblages into two faunal zones: a high- and middle marsh zone consisting of differing abundances of Jadammina macrescens, Trochammina inflata and Miliammina fusca; and a low-marsh and tidal flat zone dominated by calcareous foraminiferal species, notably Elphidium williamsoni, Haynesina germanica and Quinqueloculina spp. These faunal zones are similar to those in other mid-latitude, cool temperate intertidal environments although there are spatial and temporal variations between areas. The altitudinal ranges of the faunal zones are employed to identify the vertical relationship of the local environment in which the assemblage accumulated to a reference tide level.  相似文献

Explorers Cove, an embayment on the oligotrophic western side of McMurdo Sound, Antarctica, is noted for physical and biological similarities to the deep sea. This locality is an important site for foraminiferal biologists because large, deep-sea-like agglutinated taxa are abundant at depths accessible to divers. Using microdissection methods, we found that many of the giant, single-chambered species from this locality display an allogromiid internal organization (i.e., a monothalamous cell body encased by an organic wall or “theca”). Another characteristic feature of these species is the presence of a distinct space separating the cell body and agglutinated test. We used high voltage transmission electron microscopy of thick sections to examine the theca of Astrammina rara, a dominant Explorers Cove species possessing a simple spherical test morphology, and Notodendrodes antarctikos, a distinctive arborescent species. We found that the simple gross morphology of A. rara's agglutinated test belies the complex ultrastructure of its allogromiid-like theca, and that the complex dendritic morphology of N. antarctikos' agglutinated test contradicts the simple ultrastructure of its theca. Additional field and laboratory observations on A. rara revealed that the agglutinated test can be a transient structure. Our observations raise questions regarding the taxonomy and phylogeny of unilocular agglutinated foraminifera and other primitive granuloreticuloseans. The results are also discussed in terms of test function in larger agglutinated foraminifera and the ecology of this important taxon.  相似文献

Although foraminifera are a dominant component of many marine benthic communities, quantification of their predation on prokaryotes remains an experimental challenge. We have developed an approach that allows us to study grazing by adult specimens of the calcareous species Haynesina germanica and Ammonia beccarii, and the single-chambered agglutinated species Psammophaga sp., on bacteria (Halomonas sp.), pulse-chase-labelled with 3H- and 14C-Leucine. The bacterivorous ciliate Uronema sp. and flagellate Pteridomonas sp. were used as positive controls. The rate of release of 3H when protozoa were incubated with the labelled bacteria indicated the predator's grazing rate; the proportion of 14C found in the foraminiferal biomass and shell indicated the prey assimilation rate. All three foraminiferal species grazed bacteria at a rate of 3.2-5.7 ng C ind−1 h−1 depending on bacterial concentrations. About 23% of the biomass of the 14C-labelled prey was most likely assimilated into foraminiferal pseudopodia, 12% was expelled in dissolved waste material, about 62% was respired and only 0.1% was incorporated into the carbonate shell. Extracellular digestion associated with pseudopodia could explain the very low proportion of the labelled food assimilated in the cell body and the significant proportion located in pseudopodial networks. These experiments also suggest that very little of the carbon ingested by adult calcareous foraminifera is incorporated into the shell. However, we cannot conclude that diet has no influence on the stable isotope composition of the shell since none of our calcareous specimens grew new chambers during the experiments.  相似文献

Benthic foraminifera are single‐celled eukaryotes that make a protective organic, agglutinated or calcareous test. Some agglutinated, single‐chambered taxa, including Psammophaga Arnold, 1982, retain mineral particles in their cytoplasm, but the selective mechanism of accumulation is not clear. Here, we report the ability of a foraminiferal species to select and accumulate zircons and other heavy minerals in their cytoplasm. In particular, the use of Scanning Electron Microscope coupled with an Energy Dispersive X‐ray microanalysis system (SEM–EDS) enabled a representative overview of the mineral diversity and showed that the analysed Psammophaga zirconia sp. nov. individuals contained dominantly crystals of zircon (51%), titanium oxides (27%), and ilmenite (11%) along with minor magnetite and other minerals. The studied specimens occur in the shallow central Adriatic Sea where the sediment has a content of zircon below 1% and of other heavy minerals below 4%. For that reason we hypothesize that: (i) P. zirconia may be able to chemically select minerals, specifically zircon and rutile; (ii) the chemical mechanism allowing the selection is based on electrostatic interaction, and it could work also for agglutinated foraminifera (whether for ingestion, like Xenophyophores, or incorporation in the test as in many other described taxa). In particular, this aptitude for high preferential uptake and differential ingestion or retention of zircon is reported here for the first time, together with the selection of other heavy minerals already described in members of the genus Psammophaga. They are generally counted among early foraminifera, constructing a morphologically simple test with a single chamber. Our molecular phylogenetic study confirms that P. zirconia is a new species, genetically distinctive from other Psammophaga, and occurs in the Adriatic as well as in the Black Sea.  相似文献

The surface sediments collected from the intertidal and shallow marine (0–20 m) regimes of Jason Bay, South China Sea contain calcareous nannoplankton assemblages in whichGephyrocapsa oceanica comprises 99% of the assemblage. The calcareous nannoplankton diversity is very low and the abundance of species tends to increase with both depth and distance offshore and becomes abundant in samples from water depths of 18 m and 20 m.Emiliania huxleyi is absent from all studied samples. The sediments from the intertidal regime contained rare calcareous nannoplankton.  相似文献

The Clarion-Clipperton Zone (CCZ) occupies a vast swathe of the Pacific with extensive polymetallic nodule deposits. Eastern and central parts host diverse assemblages of xenophyophores (megafaunal agglutinated foraminifera). Here we describe xenophyophores obtained using a Remotely Operated Vehicle from the western CCZ. Eleven distinct forms include two known species, Stannophyllum zonarium Haeckel, 1888 and Aschemonella monile Gooday and Holzmann in Gooday et al., 2017b. Another four are described as new species based on morphological and genetic data. In Abyssalia foliformis gen. nov., sp. nov. and Abyssalia sphaerica sp. nov. the flattened or spherical test comprises a homogeneous framework of sponge spicules. Psammina tenuis sp. nov. has a delicate, thin, plate-like test. Moanammina semicircularis gen. nov., sp. nov. has a stalked, fan-shaped test and is genetically identical to ‘Galatheammina sp. 6’ of Gooday and co-workers from the eastern CCZ. Sequence data revealed a spherical ‘mudball’, which disintegrated and cannot be formally described, to be a novel xenophyophore. Finally, four morphospecies are represented by dead tests: Psammina spp., Reticulammina sp., and an unknown genus with a unique test structure. This collection enhances our knowledge of Pacific xenophyophore diversity and provides the first genetic confirmation of wide geographic ranges for abyssal species.  相似文献

Material from the Deep Sea Drilling Project (DSDP) Site 527 from the Angola Basin, South Atlantic Ocean, has been analyzed to determine whether Upper Cretaceous benthonic foraminiferal taxa are differentially sensitive to calcite dissolution, and, if so, to rank their order of susceptibility. Two regimes of dissolution, established on the basis of the degree of planktonic foraminiferal fragmentation, representing stronger and less prominent dissolution within the section studied, were used as a framework for reference. A total of 60 calcareous and eight agglutinated benthonic foraminiferal taxa were identified at the species or genus level; of these, twenty-three calcareous and five agglutinated taxa were selected for the dissolution study. Relative abundance of each of the various taxa was tested statistically, using t-test, between dissolution regimes to assess the significance of the change induced by increased dissolution.Nuttallides truempyi andNeoeponides sp. intermediate form are interpreted as resistant to dissolution.Pullenia spp.,Alabamina sp. a,Anomalina sp. a,Praebulimina sp. fusiform, andNuttallinella sp. a are susceptible to dissolution. The majority of the taxa (16 in number) are unaffected by dissolution because they show no change between dissolution regimes. Among the agglutinated taxaGaudryina pyramidata is resistant to dissolution, whereas the remaining four taxa are unaffected by dissolution. At the level of superfamilies, one calcareous superfamily (Discorbacea) is resistant, two (Orbitoidacea and Cassidulinacea) are unaffected, and two (Nodosariacea and Buliminacea) are susceptible to dissolution.  相似文献

A quantitative study was performed on planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannofossils of the astronomically dated Late Miocene Pissouri section (Cyprus). Our results confirm the reliability of well-known planktonic foraminiferal events as Catapsydraxparvulus LO (Last Occurrence), sinistral coiling change of Globorotaliascitula, Globorotaliamiotumida group FRO (First Regular Occurrence), Globorotalianicolae FO (First occurrence) and LO, sinistral coiling change of Neogloboquadrinaacostaensis and also of several important calcareous nannofossil events (Amaurolithusprimus FO, Amaurolithusdelicatus FO, Reticulofenestrarotaria FO and FCO). Integrated planktonic foraminifera and calcareous nannoplankton data contribute to an enhanced time resolution of the Tortonian - early Messinian interval in the Levantine basin, and contribute to detailed correlations throughout the Eastern Mediterranean. In addition, we compare methodologies commonly used in calcareous plankton biostratigraphy, and shortly outline sources of bias that can influence the results of stratigraphic studies.  相似文献

A census count of Rose Bengal stained benthic foraminifera from the surface area on top of a 2 to 6 cm thick ashfall layer at three deep water stations along the western margin of the Philippines exhibits a unique assemblage composition of benthic foraminifera. The total number of benthic foraminifera is low and the ratio of living individuals to empty tests is high. Specific diversity is low, with a significant dominance of infaunal morphotypes including species of the genus Reophax (R. scorpiurus, R. bilocularis and R. dentaliniformis), which are regarded as successful recolonizers. Assemblages below the ash layers are diverse and contain many epifaunal suspension-feeding agglutinated and calcareous foraminifera. The 1991 Mt. Pinatubo eruption caused mass mortality of benthic foraminifera in a vast area of the eastern South China Sea followed by step-wise recolonization of the ash substrate. Three years after the eruption, the benthic foraminiferal community structure is still far from recovery to background levels.  相似文献

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages in subrecent deposits are commonly used to reconstruct past sea level. Interpretations are generally made by comparison with either modern dead or total (live plus dead) assemblages. In both cases there will have been post-mortem changes that have differentially affected preservation. It is therefore important to establish the primary ecological controls by analysis of the living assemblages. We have determined the spatial and temporal variability of intertidal benthic foraminifera in the surface (0–1 cm) sediments from a time series survey of 31 sampling stations at Cowpen Marsh, for a period of 12 months. We counted 112,067 live foraminifera assigned to 28 species. The fauna was dominated by two agglutinated species (Jadammina macrescens and Trochammina inflata) on the high and middle marshes, and three calcareous species (Elphidium williamsoni, Haynesina germanica and Quinqueloculina spp.) on the low marsh and tidal flat.The standing crop of the whole intertidal zone, including the high, middle, low marsh and tidal flat habitats, and the individual species varied both temporally and spatially. The standing crop of the intertidal zone as a whole was greatest in the summer months and showed a positive correlation with elevation. The standing crops of the high and middle marshes showed similar temporal variation with peaks in summer and autumn and a trough in winter. The low marsh showed numerous peaks and troughs of standing crop during the year, whereas the tidal flat showed a single peak in summer. The standing crops of Jadammina macrescens and Trochammina inflata on the high and middle marshes peaked from April to May and August to October with troughs in winter. These agglutinated species showed a strong correlation with elevation. Haynesina germanica peaked in May to August and November to January on the low marsh, whereas on the tidal flat there was a single peak in July. The standing crops of E. williamsoni on the low marsh and tidal flat were relatively high in June and May, and July, respectively. Quinqueloculina spp. peaked in May to July on the low marsh and July on the tidal flat. The species was also found in the middle marsh from July to May and high marsh from September to November. Haynesina germanica showed a strong negative correlation with elevation, whereas the other two dominant calcareous species demonstrated weak negative correlations with both elevation and salinity.Reconstructing former sea level depends primarily on the recognition of high and middle marsh assemblages and in this study these are shown to be strongly controlled by elevation rather than salinity. Caution may be needed in interpreting low marsh and tidal flat data as salinity plays a more important role here.  相似文献

Sedimentologic and palaeontological investigation of the Upper Pliocene Slama Formation in the Lower Chelif Basin (NW Algeria) led us to collect important bivalve assemblages for taxonomic and taphonomic purposes. A rather comprehensive inventory list of Upper Pliocene bivalves from northwestern Algeria is now available and consists of 30 species, 17 of which are extinct ones. Four principal taphonomic attributes were analysed: bioerosion, encrustation, fragmentation, and abrasion. Physical and biogenic sedimentary structures are used for palaeoenvironmental interpretations. The taphonomic, sedimentologic and ichnological characteristics of most of the deposits suggests they originated from discontinuous processes of winnowing and bypassing of sediments, probably due to the action of storms in shallow waters, mainly in the shoreface depositional environment. The bivalve assemblage is dominated by disarticulated valves and displays significant taphonomic alteration in the shells. Sclerobionts traces in shells particulary affect the oyster shells. Bioerosion traces are predominately those of clionid sponges (Entobia isp.), polychaetes (Maeandropolydora isp. and Caulostrepsis isp.), bivalves (Gastrochaenolites isp.), and of predatory gastropods (Oichnus isp.). Among the sclerobionts, the identified encrusters were juvenile oyster recruits, barnacles, polychaetes (serpulid tubeworms), bryozoans (Microporella sp. and Acanthodesia sp.), and vermetid gastropods (Petaloconchus intortus).  相似文献

The development of taphonomic approaches to facies analysis requires a foundation in facies-based actualistic studies. Modern intertidal and shallow shelf environments at Provincetown Harbor. northern Cape Cod, Massachusetts (USA) provide an opportunity to compare pattcrns and controlling factors in molluscan biofacies and taphofacies distributions. Variation in faunal composition, ecologic variables, and taphonomic attributes of molluscan death assemblages produce distinct patterns of environmental zonation: (1) Faunal composition (biofacies) primarily tracks variation in substrate type among environments (sand, rock, peat, and Zostera marina beds). (2) Ecologic variables (equitability, infauna: epifauna ratio, gastropod:bivalve ratio, and predation on M. mercenaria) appear to reflect tidal exposure time. (3) Taphononic attributes (fragmentation, abrasionm, corrosion, bioerosion, and encrustation) of the common bivalve M. mercenaria track environmental energy, in particular its effects on the stability and reworking of hardparts at the sediment surface. Shells in different environments proceed along different taphonomic pathways - the order of acquisition of taphonomic features by hardparts. An encrustation/bioerosion-dominated pathway characterizes low energy environments; the upper intertidal and deeper subtidal. An abrasion-dominated pathway characterizes the high energy lower intertidal and shallow subtidal. Contrasting pathways produce distinct proportions of taphonomic attributes in time-averaged samples; proportions that delineate taphofacies. Integrated taxonomic, ecologic and taphonomic data provide a more complete picture of environmental processes than any approach alone. Four calcareous dinoflagellate morphotypes, interpreted to represent a single species, Thoracosphaera arctica n. sp., occur in upper Miocene to Holocene sediments of the central Arctic Ocean. The calcareous fossils generally are rare except during one interval, that of the latest Pliocene to late Pleistocene. During this interval the fossil dinoflagellates were alternately abundant and rare in approximate coordination with greater and lesser times of foraminifera productivity. Dinoflagellates and foraminifera generally are rare during times of accumulation of abundant coarse textured ice-rafted sediment during this interval.The life cycle of the dinoflagellate that produces the Arctic Ocean calcareous fossil is unknown but the fossils probably are either resting cysts, motile vegetative cells or hypnozygotes. A vegetative cell origin better explains the co-occurrence of foraminifera as well as the negative correlation with ice-rafting. This tentative interpretation leads to the conclusion that during the interval 2.0 to 0.7 m.y. b.p., the Arctic Ocean had relatively productive surface waters with very thin or even periodic absence of pack-ice alternating with conditions more like that of the present. During periods before 2.0 m.y. and since 0.7 m.y., the Arctic Ocean probably was ice-covered, with oceanographic conditions similar to that of the modern ocean. These conclusions differ from previous interpretations that the Arctic was continually ice-covered, had no surface productivity or was covered by a giant, Antarctic-like ice-cap.  相似文献

To investigate the release and degradation of arsenoribosides associated with the brown alga Ecklonia radiata, tissues were collected in various marine micro-habitats (water column, sand intertidal, and rock platform intertidal) to establish the importance of decomposition stage and the micro-habitat in which decomposition occurs on arsenoriboside degradation. Total arsenic concentrations in E. radiata tissues varied in a similar pattern across all three sampling locations (Lake Tabourie, Burrill Lake, and Ulladulla Harbour) with concentrations in live tissues (53–124 μg As g?1 (dry mass)) greater than concentrations in tissues decomposing in the water column (28–90 μg As g?1 (dry mass)), which were in turn higher than concentrations in tissues decomposing in intertidal environments (16–21 μg As g?1 (dry mass)). Arsenoribosides, specifically sulfonate (SO3-), phosphate (PO4-), and glycerol (Gly-) accounted for all of the arsenic extracted from live E. radiata tissues. Arsenoribosides also accounted for 100 % of the extractable arsenic species in E. radiata tissues decomposing in the water column. The proportions of arsenic species in decomposing E. radiata tissue from intertidal environments varied with sampling location and therefore micro-habitat. In rock platform-based intertidal zones (Burrill Lake and Ulladulla harbour), considerable concentrations of unextractable arsenic (10–60 %) were present plus known arsenoriboside degradation products such as dimethylarsinoylethanol (DMAE), dimethylarsenate (DMA), and arsenate (As(V)). In sand/beach-based intertidal zones, however, the vast majority of arsenic (≈95 %) was unextractable with only small concentrations of arsenoribosides and As(V) present. This study demonstrates that the release and further degradation of arsenoribosides from E. radiata tissues occurs in a two-step process with arsenoribosides released via leaching, whilst E. radiata remains suspended within the water column. Arsenoribosides are then degraded to various intermediate arsenic species once E. radiata tissues settle on intertidal environments; however, the degree of degradation varies relative to whether decomposition occurs on rock platform or sand-based environments. These results illustrate the key role of marine micro-habitats in the degradation of arsenoribosides contained within marine macro-algae.  相似文献

A comparative chemical analysis of Agastache mexicana subsp. mexicana and A. mexicana subsp. xolocotziana reveals that their methanol extracts constituents were very similar, with acacetin and (2-acetyl)-7-O-glucosyl acacetin being the most abundant compounds obtained. These results are consistent with the information reported for other species of Agastache. However, GS-MS analyses showed that methyl chavicol, limonene and linalool were the main constituents of the essential oils of A. mexicana subsp. mexicana, while pulegone, menthone and isopulegone were the major constituents found in A. mexicana subsp. xolocotziana. Furthermore, a different composition was found in their respective hexane extracts. These chemical composition dissimilarities between the two taxa support their recognition as distinct subspecies.  相似文献

The biserial agglutinated foraminifer Textularia hauerii d’Orbigny frequently occurs at shallow depths in reefal habitats off Bazaruto Island, Mozambique. X-ray diffraction, scanning electron- and light microscopy analyses show the enhanced concentration of the titanium-bearing mineral ilmenite (FeTiO3) in the agglutinated tests of this species. The mineral constitutes an insignificant component in the surrounding sediment (< 1%), but accounts for more than 26% of the foraminiferal test content. The accumulation of ilmenite in T. hauerii and its absence in co-occurring agglutinated Foraminifera suggest the preferential selection for ilmenite. The tendency for ilmenite particles to be arranged along sutures and on the apertural face (1) provides further evidence that certain Foraminifera can specifically select grains, and (2) implies that there exists a selective mechanism to control the timing and placement during test and chamber construction. The preferential uptake represents the first record of ilmenite selection in Foraminifera.
