Platygaster demades Walker (Hymenoptera: Platygastridae) is the only hymenopteran parasitoid of apple leaf-curling midge, Dasineura mali Kieffer (Diptera: Cecidomyiidae), in New Zealand. Prior to the present study the mechanisms behind the parasitoid–host density interactions were poorly understood. In this study we carried out both laboratory and field experiments to determine the response of P. demades to D. mali density. In the laboratory, when only a single parasitoid was allowed to forage D. mali eggs of a given density, P. demades displayed a Type II functional response leading to an inverse density-dependent parasitism. However, P. demades showed a Type III functional response in the field where females were able to freely search and disperse between apple shoots infested with D. mali eggs of different densities. As a result, the Type III response reflects a more realistic nature of P. demades in response to D. mali density. Our results also indicate that the numeric response and mutual interference in P. demades significantly contributed to the stability of the parasitoid–host system. The density-dependent parasitism in a host range of 50–300 D. mali eggs per apple shoot suggests that P. demades is highly efficient in controlling D. mali populations of the first, third and fourth generations and when necessary, argumentation measures may be taken before the onset of the second generation.  相似文献

  1. When thermal tolerances differ between interacting species, extreme temperature events (heat waves) will alter the ecological outcomes. The parasitoid wasp Cotesia congregata suffers high mortality when reared throughout development at temperatures that are nonstressful for its host, Manduca sexta. However, the effects of short‐term heat stress during parasitoid development are unknown in this host–parasitoid system.
  2. Here, we investigate how duration of exposure, daily maximum temperature, and the developmental timing of heat waves impact the performance of C. congregata and its host¸ M. sexta. We find that the developmental timing of short‐term heat waves strongly determines parasitoid and host outcomes.
  3. Heat waves during parasitoid embryonic development resulted in complete wasp mortality and the production of giant, long‐lived hosts. Heat waves during the 1st‐instar had little effect on wasp success, whereas heat waves during the parasitoid''s nutritionally and hormonally critical 2nd instar greatly reduced wasp emergence and eclosion. The temperature and duration of heat waves experienced early in development determined what proportion of hosts had complete parasitoid mortality and abnormal phenotypes.
  4. Our results suggest that the timing of extreme temperature events will be crucial to determining the ecological impacts on this host–parasitoid system. Discrepancies in thermal tolerance between interacting species and across development will have important ramifications on ecosystem responses to climate change.

1. The proportion of aldolase and glyceraldehyde-3-phosphate dehydrogenase (GAPDH) associated with the particulate fraction of a cell was measured in aestivating and non-aestivating Neobatrachus pelobatoides. 2. Reduced binding of these enzymes was found in the brain, indicating lower glycolytic flux. This was not correlated to metabolic rate suggesting that glycolytic rate was reduced in this tissue in the early stages of aestivation, possibly due to a change in fuel use. 3. Measurement of total enzyme levels showed that the liver of aestivating frogs had less GAPDH and less aldolase than non-aestivating frogs.  相似文献

During aestivation the metabolic rate of the Australian goldfields frog Neobatrachus wilsmorei was reduced by 80% from its standard metabolic rate. The in vitro rate of oxygen consumption of isolated muscle and skin from aestivating frogs was up to 50% lower than that of the non-aestivating frogs. This in vitro rate of oxygen consumption was maintained for 6–12 h, indicating an intrinsic metabolic depression of tissues during aestivation. Frogs became dehydrated during aestivation. Muscle, skin and liver also became dehydrated during aestivation, but brain and kidney did not. Na+ and K+ contents and extracellular space measurement for muscle indicated that ion gradients were maintained across the muscle cell membrane during aestivation. Increases in plasma concentrations of Na+ and K+ were matched with similar increases in muscle intracellular ion concentrations. Extracellular space measurements were unsuccessful in the other tissues, but K+ content in all tissues (per dry weight) was maintained during aestivation, and the concentration of plasma K+ did not increase above that which can be accounted for by dehydration, indicating that K+ gradients were maintained.Abbreviations bm body mass - DPM disintegrations per minute - dw dry weight - MR metabolic rate - vO2 rate of oxygen consumption - ww wet weight  相似文献

In aestivation the metabolic rate of the Australian desert frog Neobatrachus kunapalari was 50–67% lower than in the non-aestivating state. The rate of O2 consumption of isolated muscle, skin and brain was measured in both metabolic states. The average rate of O2 consumption of muscle was 30% lower and brain 50% lower in aestivating frogs, while the rate of O2 consumption of skin was the same. The reduction in muscle could account for a large proportion of whole animal metabolic depression. To look for evidence of a reduction in energy demand in the tissues we measured the ouabain-sensitive fraction of tissue rate of O2 consumption, which is considered to be the proportion of metabolism used for transmembrane Na+/K+ pumping. Ouabain inhibited the in vitro rate of O2 consumption of skin by a average of 20% and of brain by an average of 30%. However, in muscle, ouabain stimulated in vitro O2 consumption. Despite the 50% reduction in the in vitro rate of O2 consumption of brain during aestivation, neither the ouabain-sensitive nor ouabain-insensitive fractions were found be statistically different, possibly because of the large individual variation in the degree of ouabain inhibition. A reduction in the level of ion pumping during aestivation was therefore not demonstrated in any tissue. Measurement of the level of the enzyme Na+K+-ATPase in skeletal muscle, ventricle, kidney and brain showed that there was no change in the amount of this enzyme in the aestivating frogs. Measurement of the levels of adenylates in muscle and liver showed that the adenylate energy charge was maintained in aestivation, but that there was a reduction in ATP in liver and a reduction in the level of total adenylates in both tissues, which could be an adaptation of the tissues to a lower energy turnover. In general pompilid wasps parasitize female spiders due to their larger size and/or higher fat reserves compared to males. We describe parasitoid behavior of the pompilid wasp Anoplius bicinctus on Allocosa brasiliensis and investigate the frequencies of parasitoidism according to spider developmental stage. We performed field observations and recorded frequency and duration of parasitoidism behaviors, stage and sex of the paralyzed spider (n?=?29). We found two distinct behaviors of carrying the spider (forward transport or backward transport), that were dependent of wasp size and were maintained during the transport process. Juveniles and females of A. brasiliensis showed higher frequencies of parasitoidism compared to males, although males are larger and have higher fat content, suggesting more efficient defenses against wasp attacks in this sex.  相似文献

The egg parasitoid wasp, Anagrus takeyanus Gordh & Dunbar (Hymenoptera: Mymaridae), is one of the few natural enemies of the andromeda lace bug, Stephanitis takeyai Drake & Maa (Heteroptera: Tingidae). Studying this wasp in two habitats, I found that at Kyoto, where the bug alternates its host plants seasonally, most wasp individuals in the overwintering eggs of the bug entered summer diapause immediately after winter diapause. However, at Nara, where the bug does not alternate its host plant, the wasp proved to have no summer diapause. Changes in the parasitization rate between generations differed at the two study sites. In Kyoto, the overwintered generation suffered the highest parasitism among the three generations of the year. In contrast, the first and second generations suffered higher parasitization rates in Nara. This difference in level of parasitization between the two study sites corresponded to the different diapause regime of the wasp and the seasonal population trends of the lace bug. Laboratory experiments showed that short photoperiod in combination with low temperature could terminate the long diapause at the time the non-aestivating individuals terminate winter diapause. As a life cycle without host plant alternation is likely to be an ancestral character of the bug, the aestivation of the wasp is thought to have been appended to overwintering as an adaptation to the evolution of seasonal host plant alternation in the lace bug.  相似文献

Changes in membrane lipid composition (membrane remodelling) have been associated with metabolic depression in some aestivating snails but has not been studied in aestivating frogs. This study examined the membrane phospholipid composition of two Australian aestivating frog species Cyclorana alboguttata and Cyclorana australis. The results showed no major membrane remodelling of tissue in either frog species, or in mitochondria of C. alboguttata due to aestivation. Mitochondrial membrane remodelling was not investigated in C. australis. Where investigated in C. alboguttata, total protein and phospholipid content, and citrate synthase (CS) and cytochrome c oxidase (CCO) activities in tissues and mitochondria mostly did not change with aestivation in liver. In skeletal muscle, however, CS and CCO activities, mitochondrial and tissue phospholipids, and mitochondrial protein decreased with aestivation. These decreases in muscle indicate that skeletal muscle mitochondrial content may decrease during aestivation. Na+K+ATPase activity of both frog species showed no effect of aestivation. In C. alboguttata different fat diets had a major effect on both tissue and mitochondrial phospholipid composition indicating an ability to remodel membrane composition that is not utilised in aestivation. Therefore, changes in lipid composition associated with some aestivating snails do not occur during aestivation in these Australian frogs.  相似文献

The green striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana alboguttata, spends, on average, nine to ten months of every year in aestivation. Recently, C. alboguttata has been the focus of much investigation regarding the physiological processes involved in aestivation, yet our understanding of this frog's capacity to metabolically depress remains limited. This study aimed to extend our current knowledge of metabolic depression during aestivation in C. alboguttata. C. alboguttata reduced whole animal metabolism by 82% within 5 weeks of aestivation. The effects of aestivation on mass specific in vitro tissue metabolic rate (VO2) varied among individual organs, with muscle and liver slices showing significant reductions in metabolism; kidney VO2 was elevated and there was no change in the VO2 of small intestine tissue slices. Organ size was also affected by aestivation, with significant reductions in the mass of all tissues, except the gastrocnemius. These reductions in organ size, combined with changes in mass specific VO2 of tissue slices, resulted in further energy savings to aestivating animals. This study shows that C. alboguttata is capable of selectively down- or up-regulating individual tissues, using both changes in metabolic rate and morphology. This strategy allows maximal energy savings during aestivation without compromising organ functionality and survival at arousal.  相似文献

During aestivation, the gut of the green-striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana alboguttata undergoes significant morphological down-regulation. Despite the potential impact such changes might have on the re-feeding efficiency of these animals following aestivation, they appear to be as efficient at digesting their first meals as active, non-aestivating animals. Such efficiency might come about by the rapid restoration of intestinal morphology with both arousal from aestivation and the initial stages of re-feeding. Consequently, this study sought to determine what morphological changes to the intestine accompany arousal and re-feeding following 3 months of aestivation. Arousal from aestivation alone had a marked impact on many morphological parameters, including small and large intestine masses, small intestinal length, LF heights, enterocyte cross-sectional area and microvilli height and density. In addition, the onset of re-feeding was correlated with an immediate reversal of many morphological parameters affected by 3 months of aestivation. Those parameters that had not returned to control levels within 36 h of feeding generally had returned to control values by the completion of digestion (i.e. defecation of the meal). Re-feeding was also associated with several changes in enterocyte morphology including the incorporation in intracytoplasmic lipid droplets and the return of enterocyte nuclear material to the 'active' euchromatin state. In conclusion, morphological changes to the gut of aestivating frogs which occur during aestivation are transitory and rapidly reversible with both arousal from aestivation and re-feeding. The proximate causes behind these transitions and their functional significance are discussed.  相似文献

Changes in [35S]methionine protein labeling patterns were examined by following incorporation into the acid precipitate protein fraction of land snails,Otala lactea (Müller) (Pulmonata, Helicidae). Labeled proteins were analyzed by SDS polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis and isoelectric focusing columns. Snails in four different physiological states were compared: active controls, short term aestivating snails (injected and allowed to enter aestivation), long term aestivating snails (aestivated for 14 days, injected, and maintained in the aestivating state), and snails aroused after aestivation (aestivated, injected, and aroused). Protein associated radioactivity was measured over a 7 day time course post injection. Autoradiographic analysis of SDS-polyacrylamide gels showed increases in the radioactivity of four proteins: 91 kDa (hepatopancreas, day 1 in long term aestivating animals), 50 kDa (hepatopancreas, day 2 in short term aestivating snails), 70 kDa and 30 kDa (foot, day 2 in short term aestivating animals). Hepatopancreas and foot from day 1 long term aestivating and day 2 short term aestivating animals were also analyzed by isoelectric focusing columns. Several pH-specific differences were apparent when controls and aestivating animals were analyzed. In particular a peak of radioactivity was observed at pH 5.05 in 1 d long term aestivating hepatopancreas and at pH 4.30 in 2d short term aestivating animals. Several differences were noted in foot with no specific pattern emerging. SDS-polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis analysis of the hepatopancreas peaks showed the appearance of several bands with increased radioactivity, including the 91 kDa and 50 kDa proteins described above. In a tritrophic system, parasitoid development and galler host survival strategies have rarely been investigated simultaneously, an approach crucial for a complete understanding of the complexity of host–parasitoid interactions. Strategies in parasitoids to maximize host exploitation and in gallers to reduce predation risk can greatly affect the structure of tritrophic communities. In this study, the developmental strategies of galler hosts and their associated parasitoids in the tritrophic fig–fig wasp system are experimentally investigated for the first time. In this highly co-evolved system, wasp development is intrinsically tied with the phenology of the wasp brood sites that are restricted to the enclosed urn-shaped fig inflorescence called the syconium which can be regarded as a microcosm. Wasp exclusion experiments to determine host specificity, gall dissections and developmental assays were conducted with non-pollinating fig wasps in Ficus racemosa. Our results provide evidence for exceptions to the widely accepted koinobiont–idiobiont parasitoid dichotomy. This is also the first time fig wasps were raised ex situ from non-feeding stages onwards, a technique that enabled us to monitor their development from their pre-pupal to adult stages and record their development time more accurately. Based on variation in development time and host specificity, the possibility of a cryptic parasitoid species is raised. The frequency of different wasp species eclosing from the microcosms of individual syconia is explained using host–parasitoid associations and interactions under the modulating effect of host plant phenology.  相似文献

The wasp Anagrus atomus L. parasitizes eggs of the cicadellid Empoasca vitis (Göthe) on grapevines during the vegetative season. In vineyards, abundant parasitoid emergence occurs in the autumn as a result of a developmental delay in part of the A. atomus population. In this context, physiological times required by the parasitoid to develop in E. vitis eggs are recorded during the summer. In early summer, all individuals develop fully, with physiological times in agreement with those reported in the literature. From early August onwards, an increasing proportion of parasitoids show a delay in development involving pre‐imaginal stages. Under transmission microscopy, larvae of A. atomus inside the eggs of E. vitis can be clearly differentiated as ‘light’ and ‘dark’ types, which are associated with normal and delayed development, respectively. The decreasing photoperiod as autumn approaches appears to promote the retardation of growth. This phenomenon can be considered a typical case of risk spreading because, when the availability of E. vitis eggs in vineyards is high (i.e. in early summer), A. atomus shows (i) only a normal developmental pattern that allows a faster population increase, whereas (ii) when E. vitis egg availability begins to be scarce (i.e. from mid summer), an increasing proportion of individuals having delayed development provides better fitness because it allows the parasitoid to synchronize its life history with leafhopper species that lay overwintering eggs on plants other than grapevines.  相似文献

African dipnoi (lungfish) are aestivating fish and obligate air breathers that, throughout their complex life cycle, undergo remarkable morpho-functional organ readjustment from biochemical to morphological level. In the present review we summarize the changes of the NOS/NO (Nitric Oxide Synthase/Nitric Oxide) system occurring in lungs, gills, kidney, heart, and myotomal muscle of African lungfish of the genus Protopterus (P. dolloi and P. annectens), in relation to the switch from freshwater to aestivation, and vice-versa. In particular, the expression and localization patterns of NOS, and its protein partners Akt, Hsp-90 and HIF-1α, have been discussed, together with the apoptosis rate, evaluated by TUNEL technique.We hypothesize that all these molecular components are crucial in signalling transduction/integration networks induced by environmental challenges (temperature, dehydration, inactivity)experienced at the beginning, during, and at the end of the dry season.  相似文献

The dried peripheral area of pond Idumban (62 ha) increased from 3.2 ha in January to 3 1.9 ha in April. Pila globosa, which were abundant in the littoral area, did not commence aestivation during this period, perhaps due to low temperature and/or high dissolved oxygen content. The number of aestivating snails averaged 0.5/m2 in May, 1973 (3.6% of the total population) and it increased to 1.1/M2 in September (26.2%). Biomass of the snail increased from 3.5 to 19.9 g dry weight (including shell)/M2. Number of aestivating snails increased from 0.4/m2 (5.2% of the total population) in May 1974 to 0.8/m2 (11.1%) in July and the biomass from 4.1 g/m2 to 10.7 g/m2. Availability of dried area for aestivation increased from 5.3 to 23.7 ha in 1973 and from 13.5 to 30.2 ha in 1974.Monthly observations made on the marked snails forced to aestivate at 7.5, 15.0, 22.5 and 30.0 cm depth in the pond during May, revealed that temperature above 35°C and moisture below 5% were critical. Mortality and weight loss decreased in the snails forced to aestivate at increasing depth. Random observations indicated that 83% of the aestivating snails buried themselves at 15 cm depth in the pond. On the whole, 98,480 snails (592 Kg) and 115,270 (758 Kg) died during aestivation in 1973 and 1974 respectively. Of the total weight loss, the energy lost via metabolism contributed only a small fraction of 2.2% (12 Kg) and 2.1% (15 Kg) during these years. Considering the total aestivation area, the snails which succumbed averaged only 0.4/m2/year (2.5 g/m2/year). On an average, dry substance equivalent to about 2.6 mg dry weight/ g dry weight of snail/ day (3.7 gcal/ g live snail/ day) was lost on metabolism by the aestivating snails, i.e. the metabolic level of the aestivating snail was about 1 / 18th of that of the actively feeding snail.  相似文献

Prepupae of the arctiid moth Cymbalophora pudica spend spring and summer months in a summer diapause (aestivation), the duration of which is photoperiodically controlled. Cold hardiness, drought tolerance and some physiological and biochemical parameters were measured in aestivating prepupae. Large amounts of metabolic reserves, in the form of lipids and glycogen, accumulated prior to aestivation. Glycogen served as the main metabolic fuel for aestivating prepupae. Metabolic rate decreased rapidly after the onset of the inactive prepupal stage and remained low (5-15% of the level in active larva) during aestivation. A spontaneous increase of the respiration rate occurred before pupation. Neither low mol. wt sugars or alcohols (polyols) accumulated nor the haemolymph osmotic pressure changed during aestivation. Drought tolerance of aestivating prepupae was high (no decrease in survival after exposure to r.h.<10% at a temperature of 23 degrees C for a substantial part of diapause) owing to their extensive capacity to stabilize the relative body water content irrespective of the r.h. of surrounding air. Cold hardiness was low (>90% decrease in survival after exposure to -7 degrees C for 24h). Cold and drought acclimations did not lead to significant changes in the measured physiological and biochemical parameters but cold (not drought) acclimation caused a significant increase in cold hardiness. Neither drought tolerance nor the increase in cold hardiness after cold acclimation appear to be related to presence/accumulation of polyols in aestivating C. pudica prepupae.  相似文献

In a context where hosts are distributed in patches and susceptible to parasitism for a limited time, female parasitoids foraging for hosts might experience intraspecific competition. We investigated the effects of host and parasitoid developmental stage and intraspecific competition among foraging females on host-searching behaviour in the parasitoid wasp Hyposoter horticola. We found that H. horticola females have a pre-reproductive adult stage during which their eggs are not mature yet and they forage very little for hosts. The wasps foraged for hosts more once they were mature. Behavioural experiments showed that wasps’ foraging activity also increased as host eggs aged and became susceptible to parasitism, and as competition among foraging wasps increased.  相似文献

The effects of short‐term fasting and prolonged fasting during aestivation on the morphology of the proximal small intestine and associated organs were investigated in the green‐striped burrowing frog, Cyclorana alboguttata (Anura: Hylidae). Animals were fasted for 1 week while active or for 3–9 months during aestivation. Short‐duration fasting (1 week) had little effect on the morphology of the small intestine, whilst prolonged fasting during aestivation induced marked enteropathy including reductions in intestinal mass, length and diameter, longitudinal fold height and tunica muscularis thickness. Enterocyte morphology was also affected markedly by prolonged fasting: enterocyte cross‐sectional area and microvillous height were reduced during aestivation, intercellular spaces were visibly reduced and the prevalence of lymphocytes amongst enterocytes was increased. Mitochondria and nuclei were also affected by 9 months of aestivation with major disruptions to mitochondrial cristae and increased clumping of nuclear material and increased infolding of the nuclear envelope. The present study demonstrates that the intestine of an aestivating frog responds to prolonged food deprivation during aestivation by reducing in size, presumably to reduce the energy expenditure of the organ.  相似文献
