The study of Quaternary sediments covering the last 550 kyr from the borehole GDEC-4-2, East-Corsica basin, was performed through the study of benthic meiofaunal assemblages (ostracoda and benthic foraminifera) whose distribution responds to climate changes, and glacial–interglacial variability in particular. The interglacial ostracod group is mainly composed of the Argilloecia acuminata, Cytheropteron alatum, Henryhowella sp., Polycope sp. and Cytherella sp., which indicate an enhanced surface productivity and possibly high bottom water temperature during these warm intervals. Benthic foraminifera, such as Hoeglundina elegans, Sigmoilopsis schlumbergeri, Bigenerina nodosaria and Hyalinea balthica are predominant during interglacial periods and also show an increasing surface productivity associated to warm intervals. Increase in surface productivity would contribute to an enhanced export of organic matter to sea floor at the GDEC-4-2 site during interglacial periods. The bottom temperature drop coupled with the important sedimentary inputs (associated to a significant quantity of refractory organic matter) during glacial periods was highlighted by the predominance of ostracoda, such as Paradoxostoma sp., Cytheropteron testudo, Bathycythere vanstraateni, Macrocypris sp., Echinocythereis echinata and benthic foraminifera as Bolivina spathulata, Bulimina costata, and Bulimina marginata. The distribution of some benthic foraminifera species describing a turnover system allowed the characterization of the last three climate cycles (MIS 8–9, MIS 6–7, MIS 1–5) probably marked by changes of bottom water paleoceanographic conditions in terms of temperature, salinity, bottom current intensity and surface productivity. The cyclic variations of the allochthonous group recorded over the last 550 kyr suggest a major role played by the eustatic factor, with the latter possibly favouring down slope transport. The distribution of this group allowed thus establishing a link between shelf-basin sediment transfer and climate, with enhanced shelf-basin sediment transfer during glacial low stands.  相似文献

Biogenic records of the marine palaeoproductivity (carbonates, organic carbon, and C37 alkenones) and the molecular stratigraphy of past sea surface temperatures (SSTs; U37K′) were studied at high resolution in two cores of the Iberian Margin. The comparison of these records indicates that the oceanographic conditions switched abruptly during the past 160 kyr between three kinds of regimes. A first regime with high (17-22°C) SST and low productivity typifies the interglacial periods, marine isotopic stages (MIS) 5 and 1. Several periods during MIS 6, 2, and the terminations II and I are characterised by about 4-5°C colder SST and a higher organic matter accumulation, both of which define the second regime. This anticorrelation between SST and marine productivity suggests that these variations are related to the intensity of the coastal upwelling. By contrast with this upwelling behaviour, extremely low biological productivity and very cold SST (6-12°C) occurred during short phases of glacial MIS 6, 4, and 2, and as abrupt events (≈1 kyr or less) during MIS 3. The three oceanographic regimes are consistent with micropalaeontological changes in the same cores based on foraminifera and diatoms. The general trend of these hydrologic changes follows the long-term glacial/interglacial cycle, but the millennium scale variability is clearly related to Heinrich events and Dansgaard-Oeschger cycles. Strengthening of the upwelling corresponds probably to an intensification of the subtropical atmospheric circulation over the North Atlantic which was influenced by the presence of continental ice sheets. However, extreme glacial conditions due to massive discharges of icebergs interrupted the upwelling. Interestingly, both terminations II and I coincided with strong but transient intensification of the upwelling.  相似文献

We determined the faunal composition and total number of tests (#/g) of planktic foraminifera (> 125 μm) in core KH00-05 GOA 6 near Oman in order to decipher monsoon-induced variability of oceanographic productivity in the open-ocean upwelling area in the northwest Arabian Sea. The core contains a continuous record of sedimentation over the last 230 kyr, with the age model based on oxygen isotope and accelerator mass spectrometry 14C dates. We focused on species (Globigerina bulloides and Globigerinita glutinata) typical for SW monsoonal upwelling and species typical for NE monsoon conditions (Neogloboquadrina incompta, Neogloboquadrina dutertrei, Globigerinoides ruber, and Globigerinoides sacculifer). The changes in relative abundance of these monsoonal indicators suggest that the open-ocean upwelling area was dominated by the SW monsoon during interglacial periods, but by the NE monsoon during glacial periods.Increases in total test abundance during glacial periods confirmed that the NE monsoon rather than SW monsoon contributes largely to planktic foraminiferal productivity in this area. We argue that three types of circumstances resulted in high productivity, with nine high productivity events occurring at a 23-kyr frequency. The first type caused high productivity events at 102 and 199 ka (interglacial periods), characterized by the dominance of upwelling species, indicating high productivity during strong SW monsoons, correlated with high July insolation at 45° N. An exceptional high productivity event occurred at 37 ka during interglacial marine isotope stage (MIS) 3, with contributions from both SW and NE monsoons. The second type of high productivity event occurred at 61, 147, and 175 ka, during glacial periods, characterized by dominance of NE monsoon species, and correlated with low January insolation at 45° N. In addition, a high productivity event at 85 ka (interglacial period) also was induced by enhanced NE monsoons. The last two high productivity events occurred during transitional periods from glacial to interglacial (MIS 6/5.5 and 2/1), were characterized by the replacement of NE monsoon species with upwelling species, and corresponded to abrupt climate warming, suggesting that they are related to both accelerated SW monsoon systems and reduced NE monsoon systems.  相似文献

The changing composition of radiolarian faunas from late Neogene deep-sea sediments has been used in recent years as a proxy for changes in marine paleoproductivity. We examine radiolarian faunas, organic carbon content (TOC), opal and coarse-fraction components over the last 270,000 years in sediments from ODP Hole 1084A, drilled in a high productivity upwelling region within the Benguela Upwelling System off the west coast of Africa. Age control is provided by stable oxygen isotope measurements of benthic foraminifera. Prior research has established that late Pleistocene glacial intervals in this upwelling system generally had higher productivity than interglacials. The radiolarian WADE (water-depth ecology) paleoproductivity index correlates well with TOC and opal in these samples, and all three parameters change in synchrony with the benthic isotope curve over all but the MIS 5e–6 time interval. WADE inferred productivity is significantly higher in glacials than interglacials. We conclude that the WADE index is a useful proxy for paleoproductivity at this location, as are also opal and organic carbon accumulation rates. Carbonate and carbonate based indices such as the accumulation rate of benthic foraminifera (BFAR) by contrast do not correlate well either to productivity indices or to the glacial–interglacial cycle, and are interpreted to primarily reflect carbonate dissolution.  相似文献

Magnetostratigraphic studies have established a first-order chronological framework for the Paleolithic sites in the Nihewan Basin (North China), which enabled tracking early human evolution in East Asia. However, to fully understand how well early humans were adapted to climate change, a truly precise dating of the Paleolithic sites is required. Here, we established a high-resolution astronomical timescale for the Xiantai and Donggutuo fluvio-lacustrine successions at the eastern margin of the Nihewan Basin employing low-field magnetic susceptibility (χ) as a climatic indicator, aiming to further refine the ages of the Xiantai, Donggutuo and Maliang Paleolithic sites. Starting from an initial age model constrained by geomagnetic reversals, larger-scale χ cycles were firstly tuned to orbital obliquity using an automatic orbital tuning method. This first-order tuning was followed by simultaneously tuning χ to both obliquity and precession. The finally tuned χ records can be correlated almost cycle-by-cycle with the quartz grain-size record of the Chinese loess sequence and the marine δ18O record. The astronomically estimated age of the Xiantai Paleolithic site is ca. 1.48 Ma, corresponding to paleosol layer S20 of the Chinese loess sequences or marine oxygen isotope stage (MIS) 49, an interglacial period. The astronomical estimate for the Donggutuo Paleolithic site ranges from ~ 1.06 Ma to 1.12 Ma, corresponding to paleosol/loess layers S11-S12 or MIS 31-33, spanning both interglacial and glacial periods. The astronomically estimated age of the Maliang Paleolithic site is ~ 0.79 Ma, corresponding to loess layer L8 or MIS 20, a glacial period. This astronomical finding further implies that early humans may have permanently occupied China as far north as 40oN since at least 1.1 Ma, and before this time the occupation may be intermittent.  相似文献

A sedimentary sequence spanning Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6 to MIS 2 in core LC07, recovered in the central Mediterranean, has been investigated in order to produce a high-resolution paleoceanographic reconstruction. The changes in productivity deduced from calcareous plankton relative abundances and independently confirmed by the BaXS fluctuations are linked to the stability of the water column which is mainly controlled by the water mass temperature. During glacial intervals, productivity was generally enhanced. Oligotrophic and warmer water masses with a deepened seasonal thermocline can be inferred for most of MIS5. The magnetic properties of the sediment show increased occurrences of North Africa dust in the central Mediterranean during cold phases, likely as a consequence of a more efficient erosive process triggered by southward displacement of the intertropical convergence zone. Although increases in both productivity and Saharan dust occurred during cold periods, the atmospheric inputs do not seem to contribute significantly to the fertilization of primary producers. A Shannon Index curve has been used to tentatively synthesize the variations of calcareous nannofossil assemblages through the last 150 kyr. The assemblage diversity sharply increased coincident with the transition from the penultimate glacial to the last interglacial, subsequently low diversity was gradually reached again in the last glacial.  相似文献

The last 220 ka of the MD03-2705 (18° 05.81′ N–21° 09.19′ W) sedimentary sequence, retrieved off the Cape Verde islands, was investigated using a multiproxy approach. Planktonic foraminifera assemblage analyses, coupled with isotopic measurements (δ18O) from benthic (Planulina wuellerstorfi) and planktonic (Globigerinoides ruber) foraminifera monospecific samples were conducted along the topmost 11 m of the sequence. High resolution X-ray fluorescence measurements (0.5 cm resolution), giving access to major element ratio, have completed the geochemical analyses along the core. Seasonal and annual past sea surface temperatures (SST) were quantitatively reconstructed. Local sea-surface salinity (SSS) changes were then estimated by coupling SST with planktonic δ18O data. Our data provide a set of both oceanic and continental markers of environmental changes along the north-western African margin. The major changes detected in our record are discussed in the light of the regional paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic history of the last 220 ka. Coupled oceanographic and atmospheric processes portray the climatic evolution of the area, and show strong links among the regional oceanography (water mass advection), the upwelling dynamics and the Intertropical Convergence Zone (ITCZ) migration. An increased upwelling activity (or influence of upwelling filaments) is noted at the end of the two last glacial periods, probably in response to a more southerly position of the ITCZ. Higher SSS are recorded over the area during arid intervals and were tentatively interpreted as signing a southward shift of the Cape Verde Frontal Zone. A detailed coupling between dust advection and SSS values over the site of study was noted during MIS6.5.  相似文献

Hermit‐crab transported shells of the West Indian top shell Cittarium pica occur in numerous terrestrial fossil deposits on Bermuda, which is the most remote outpost of this Caribbean species. Cittarium is so far known only from deposits of interglacial ages corresponding to marine isotope stages (MIS) 11, 9, 5e, and 1 (Holocene). In at least the cases of MIS 11 and 5e, Cittarium appears at the very beginning of the interglacial. The species is definitely absent from well‐stratified cave deposits of the last glacial (MIS 4–2). It is hypothesized that colder sea‐surface temperatures (SSTs) during glacial periods caused Cittarium to be extirpated on Bermuda, and that it has made at least four independent colonizations of the island in the past 400 000 years. Because of the limited larval life of Cittarium, the window for colonization may be a very narrow period at the onset of interglacials when the SST has risen sufficiently to make Bermuda habitable but the velocity of the Gulf Stream is still sufficiently rapid to transport viable larvae from the Bahamas. © 2013 The Linnean Society of London, Biological Journal of the Linnean Society, 2013, 110 , 235–243.  相似文献

We present here a pollen record from the northern Indian Ocean that goes back to 200 ka, the boundary between marine isotopic stages (MIS) 7 and 6. Pollen, oxygen-isotopic composition and organic carbon have been examined for two sediment cores from the eastern Arabian Sea (15°02′N and 71°41′E, 13°16′N and 71°00′E), to reconstruct the long-term palaeoclimate and palaeovegetation of the Indian subcontinent. Oxygen-isotope data suggest that glacial periods (MIS 2, 4 and 6) are characterised by low precipitation because of a weak southwest monsoon and a strong northeast monsoon. In contrast, interglacial periods (MIS 1, 3 and 5) are marked by high fresh water input resulting from a strong southwest monsoon. During the last glacial-interglacial cycle, sea-surface temperature and surface salinity changed as a result of variations in the evaporation-precipitation (E-P) balance. Throughout the core, the dominant pollen types are Poaceae and Chenopodiaceae and/or Amaranthaceae (>50%). Their dominance during glacial periods (MIS 2, 4 and 6) suggests that the climate was cold and dry. This dominance is also suggestive of salinity-tolerant vegetation colonizing large areas near seashore due to lower sea level or high E-P conditions. During interglacial periods (MIS 1, 3 and 5) when there was high precipitation, the arid taxa were sparse, whereas Poaceae and Piperaceae were abundant. Hence, Chenopodiaceae and/or Amaranthaceae and Artemisia are suggestive of cold and arid/semi-arid climate, and Poaceae and Piperaceae of warm and wet conditions. Mangrove pollen is not well represented in the cores.  相似文献

Climatic warming during the last glacial–interglacial transition (LGIT) was punctuated by reversals to glacial‐like conditions. Palaeorecords of ecosystem change can help document the geographical extent of these events and improve our understanding of biotic sensitivity to climatic forcing. To reconstruct ecosystem and climatic variations during the LGIT, we analyzed lake sediments from southwestern Alaska for fossil pollen assemblages, biogenic‐silica content (BSiO2%), and organic‐carbon content (OC%). Betula shrub tundra replaced herb tundra as the dominant vegetation of the region around 13 600 cal BP (cal BP: 14C calibrated calendar years before present), as inferred from an increase of Betula pollen percentages from << 5% to >> 20% with associated decreases in Cyperaceae, Poaceae, and Artemisia. At c. 13 000 cal BP, a decrease of Betula pollen from 28 to << 5% suggests that shrub tundra reverted to herb tundra. Shrub tundra replaced herb tundra to resume as the dominant vegetation at 11 600 cal BP. Higher OC% and BSiO2% values suggest more stable soils and higher aquatic productivity during shrub‐tundra periods than during herb‐tundra periods, although pollen changes lagged behind changes in the biogeochemical indicators before c. 13 000 cal BP. Comparison of our palaeoecological data with the ice‐core dδ18O record from Greenland reveals strikingly similar patterns from the onset through the termination of the Younger Dryas (YD). This similarity supports the hypothesis that, as in the North Atlantic region, pronounced YD climatic oscillations occurred in the North Pacific region. The rapidity and magnitude of ecological changes at the termination of the YD are consistent with greenhouse experiments and historic photographs demonstrating tundra sensitivity to climatic forcing.  相似文献

Two late Quaternary sediment cores from the northern Cape Basin in the eastern South Atlantic Ocean were analyzed for their benthic foraminiferal content and benthic stable carbon isotope composition. The locations of the cores were selected such that both of them presently are bathed by North Atlantic Deep Water (NADW) and past changes in deep water circulation should be recorded simultaneously at both locations. However, the areas are different in terms of primary production. One core was recovered from the nutrient-depleted Walvis Ridge area, whereas the other one is from the continental slope just below the coastal upwelling mixing area where present day organic matter fluxes are shown to be moderately high. Recent data served as the basis for the interpretation of the late Quaternary faunal fluctuations and the paleoceanographic reconstruction.

During the last 450,000 years, NADW flux into the eastern South Atlantic Ocean has been restricted to interglacial periods, with the strongest dominance of a NADW-driven deep water circulation during interglacial stages 1, 9 and 11. At the continental margin, high productivity faunas and very low epibenthic δ13C values indicate enhanced fluxes of organic matter during glacial periods. This can be attributed to a glacial increase and lateral extension of coastal upwelling. The long term glacial-interglacial paleoproductivity cycles are superimposed by high-frequency variations with a period of about 23,000 yr. Enhanced productivity in surface waters above the Walvis Ridge, far from the coast, is indicated during glacial stages 8, 10 and 12. During these periods, cold, nutrient-rich filaments from the mixing area were probably driven as far as to the southeastern flank of the Walvis Ridge.  相似文献

Piston core (PS2487-6), recovered south of Cape Town, and sediment surface samples, recovered in the area of the Agulhas Current retroflection, were used to construct paleoceanographic scenarios for the late Quaternary in a region with an important role in global water mass transfer. Coccolithophore (calcareous nannofossil) and planktonic foraminifera assemblages and oxygen isotope data were collected. Stratigraphic control is based on calibration of the δ18O stratigraphic signals with calcareous nannofossil events that are thought to be synchronous over a broad range of latitudes. Study of the surface sediments permits the characterisation of the Agulhas Current, Subtropical Convergence and Subantarctic coccolithophore assemblages. The Agulhas Current assemblage has relatively high proportions of Florisphaera profunda, Gephyrocapsa oceanica and Umbilicosphaera spp. These species are absent or present in low proportions in subantarctic waters. The abundance of coccolithophores during isotope stages 1, 5 and 7 is characteristic of relatively warm, stratified surface waters, with a deep nutricline and chlorophyll maximum, which strongly suggests that the area was under the influence of the Agulhas Current retroflection. The incursion of Globigerinoides ruber, abundant today in the Agulhas Current, also supports this interpretation. Conversely, during glacial stages 2–4 and 6, a strong reduction in warm and stratified water indicators can be observed, together with an increase in cold-eutrophic species. The interval from isotope stages 8 to 12 displays an assemblage dominated by Gephyrocapsa caribbeanica, the highest values being seen in the so-called Mid-Brunhes event, accompanied by a clear reduction in subtropical Holocene species. During the glacial interval from isotope stages 10–12, G. caribbeanica dominated the assemblage. The ecological interpretation of this species is controversial due to a clear evolutionary overprint. Isotope stage 12 is here interpreted as having been the coldest one in the period studied. It is characterised by a strong increase in Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (dextral and sinistral) and a remarkable decrease in tropical and subtropical planktonic foraminifera. From isotope stage 13 to 18, a hiatus is interpreted. Below this hiatus the stratigraphic resolution is poorer, although the glacial–interglacial cyclicity is well defined in the Agulhas Current Retroflection area (Core PS2487-6) for the last 25 isotope stages. The glacial–interglacial cyclicity is thought to be due to a fluctuation in the Subtropical Convergence Zone, probably linked to the eastward and westward displacement of the Agulhas Current retroflection. In any case, the core studied was always in a subtropical environment, under the influence of the Agulhas Current, which was enhanced during interglacial periods. For the whole of the interval studied, increases in Calcidiscus leptoporus, Umbilicosphaera spp., and Syracosphaera spp. among the calcareous nannofossils, and in G. ruber and Globigerinoides sacculifer within the planktonic foraminifera, clearly respond to interglacial pulses, reaching maximum values during short periods close to the major deglaciations.  相似文献

Lake Biwa is situated in western Honshu, and is the largest and oldest freshwater lake in Japan. During 1982–1983, a long core was drilled to a bottom depth of 1422 m in order to investigate the palaeolimnological record, which contains 911 m of various sedimentary units overlying Palaeozoic–Mesozoic basements. A 249.5-m core of the uppermost bed (T Bed) was palynologically examined at intervals of ca. 2 m. The investigated part of the core covers approximately the last 430,000 years of the mid-Upper Pleistocene and Holocene, and five glacial–interglacial cycles can be recognized. Ten major vegetational zones could be recognized from the bottom to the surface. The zones bearing even numbers, BW-10, 8, 6, 4 and 2, matched glacial periods in which pollen of subarctic taxa (Pinaceae, Betula) and cool–temperate taxa (Fagus, Lepidobalanus) was dominant. In the glacial periods, high pollen values for temperate conifers such as Cryptomeria, Cupressaceae and Sciadopitys indicate interstadial periods. Zones bearing odd numbers, BW-9, 7, 5, 3 and 1, matched interglacial periods with high pollen values for the warm–temperate taxon Cyclobalanopsis, or showed the characteristic appearance of Lagerstroemia, and temperate coniferous taxa (Cryptomeria, Cupressaceae). There were two vegetational types in the interglacial periods. One was the type indicated by BW-9 and 1 zones, when warm–temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees such as Cyclobalanopsis and Castanopsis showed high pollen values, and the warm–temperate deciduous broad-leaved tree Lagerstroemia was lacking. The climate of these interglacial periods seems to have been cold and dry in winter, and warm and wet in summer. The other was the vegetational type recorded in BW-7, 5 and 3 zones, where Lagerstroemia showed low pollen values, and the warm–temperate evergreen broad-leaved trees mentioned above were poorly represented. The climate seems to have been mild and wet in winter, and cool and wet in summer. The dominant pollen values for cool–temperate deciduous broad-leaved taxa such as Fagus and Lepidobalanus are very important indicators of the initiation of both glacial and interglacial periods in western Japan.  相似文献

During the last half million years, pulses of gigantism in the anagenetic lineage of land snails of the subgenus Poecilozonites on Bermuda were correlated with glacial periods when lower sea level resulted in an island nearly an order of magnitude larger than at present. During those periods, the island was colonized by large vertebrate predators that created selection pressure for large size and rapid growth in the snails. Extreme reduction in land area from rising seas, along with changes in ecological conditions at the onset of interglacial episodes, marked extinction events for large predators, after which snails reverted to much smaller size. The giant snails were identical in morphology during the last two glacials when the predators included a large flightless rail Rallus recessus (marine isotope stages (MIS) 4-2) and a crane Grus latipes and a duck Anas pachysceles (MIS 6). In a preceding glacial period (MIS 10), when the fauna also included the tortoise Hesperotestudo bermudae, the snails were not only large, but the shells were much thicker, presumably to prevent crushing by tortoises. Evolution of Poecilozonites provides an outstanding example of dramatic morphological change in response to environmental pressures in the absence of cladogenesis.  相似文献

This paper explores the impact of major glacial/interglacial paleohydrologic variations in the Middle-Paleolithic Levant on hominin migration and occupation. The climatic reconstruction is based primarily on the most straight-forward paleohydrologic records recently published. These terrestrial proxies convey direct paleoenvironmental signals of effective precipitation and aquifer recharge. The two main proxies are temporal changes of terminal lake levels in the Dead Sea basin and periods of deposition or non-deposition of speleothems. Other records, such as stable isotopes, if interpreted correctly, correspond well with these two direct proxies. All the records consistently indicate that the last two glacial periods in the central Levant were generally wet and cool, while the last two interglacials were dry and warm, so more water was available for the ecosystem and thus hominins during glacial periods than during interglacials. Some proxies indicate that the higher precipitation/evaporation ratio during glacial periods involved higher precipitation rather than only reduced evaporation. Beyond the general mean glacial/interglacial climate suggested here, variations occurred at all temporal scales throughout glacial or interglacial periods. In the Sahara-Negev arid barrier, moister conditions occurred during Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 6a-5e, when Anatomically Modern Humans apparently migrated out of Africa. We suggest that this migration, as well as the later Neanderthal expansion from Southeast Europe or the Anatolian plateau into the Levant during early MIS 4, could be facilitated by the observed major climatic variations.  相似文献

Detailed analyses of planktonic foraminifera at Site 17964 from the southern South China Sea (SCS) disclose that warm-water species have a higher percentage during the Holocene, while temperate-water species have a higher content for the last glacial period. Therefore, the sea surface temperature (SST) is a main factor that affects the foraminiferal assemblage at this site. A remarkable faunal variation at Site 17964 is recognized for Pulleniatina obliquiloculata over the last glacial–interglacial periods: higher P. obliquiloculata content during the glacial period and abrupt drop at the beginning of Termination I (16.5–15 kyr B.P.). The characteristic P. obliquiloculata variation can be correlated with other sites in the southern SCS and thus can be adopted as a stratigraphic tool in the region. A detailed analysis of Orbulina universa shell morphometrics at Site 17964 shows the test size from 0.83 to 1.45 mm and the shell porosity up to 36.7%, much larger than those in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, which indicates a warmer and less saline surface water in the equatorial–tropical western Pacific. The diameter and shell porosity of O. universa increased from the last glacial to the Holocene, corresponding to the increase of SST recorded by the Uk37 alkenone index. A higher correlation coefficient (89%) between the O. universa test size and SST implies that intraspecific O. universa test size be used as an index of the sea surface temperature in the South China Sea.  相似文献

The aim of this research is to understand changes in the biogeography of the chacma baboon (Papio ursinus) through time, by modelling potential habitat changes through the last glacial–interglacial cycle (last interglacial, glacial maximum and current conditions). An environmental envelope model in a geographic information system is used to produce a range of habitat distribution models for the chacma baboon. Initially it is modelled as a single taxon, following which the data are further divided and explored to model predicted habitats for the chacma clades during different stages of the glacial–interglacial cycle. An area of approximately 1,044,000 km2 was identified as potentially having been within the environmental core habitat at some stage of the glacial–interglacial cycle. Of this, 63,700 km2 of land was predicted to have been core habitat regardless of the stage of the glacial–interglacial cycle. Additionally, rainfall appears to be the environmental variable with the most limiting effect on habitat size. This is true for the current, last glacial maximum and last interglacial environmental conditions. The largest area that remains within the core habitat throughout the last glacial–interglacial cycle is found in the northern provinces of South Africa. The chacma clades appear to interact in a cyclic pattern of expansion and contraction, each clade being more prominent under different environmental conditions. It appears that grey footed chacma habitat periodically extends northward towards the yellow baboon. These findings suggest dynamic and varied progression of the chacma baboon palaeo-distributions.  相似文献

The essential characteristics of the vegetation dynamics of tropical Africa remain only partially known. This study assesses the succession of vegetation-types over Central Africa during the last two glacial/interglacial cycles. Analysis of core KZai 02, which contains pollen from the Zaire River watershed (latitudes 9°N–13°S), allows the investigation of long-term patterns of plant ecosystem development and their climatic causes. Core KZai 02 (18.20 m long) was recovered from 6°24.20′S/9°54.10′E in the uppermost axial edifice of the Zaire deep sea fan. The chronology of this sedimentary archive was established using nannofossils and correlations of pollen and total organic carbon signals with the nearby core GeoB1008. The pollen record indicates that: (i) glacials (MIS 6, 4, 2) are marked by the development of afromontane (Podocarpus) forest at high altitudes when central basin lowlands were occupied by Cyperaceae marshes and savannah; (ii) during interglacials (MIS 1, 5) lowland forests were developed, marked by the successive expansion of pioneer, warm-temperate, rain forests, and mangrove indicating sea-level rise; (iii) glacial-interglacial transitions (MIS 6/5, 2/1) display similar vegetation dynamics. The strong evidence of afromontane forest and the opening of the vegetation during glacials suggest a reduced latitudinal distribution of rainfall by the strengthening of the trade wind system. West African monsoon systems were enhanced during interglacials, allowing the progressive development of lowland forests. The development of rain and pioneer forests during glacial Heinrich stadials suggests an enhancement of water availability in tropical Africa associated with these high-latitude events. However, no augmentation of wind activity described by previous studies is evidenced by our pollen record. Similar vegetation successions during glacial/interglacial transitions suggest the diachronous and stepped intervention of CO2 (emphasizing the influence of temperature on plant ecosystems) and water availability.  相似文献

The theory of classical and cryptic Pleistocene refugia is based mainly on historical changes in temperature, and the refugia are usually defined within a latitudinal gradient. However, the gradient of oceanic–continental climate (i.e. longitudinal) was also significantly variable during glacial cycles with important biotic consequences. Range‐wide phylogeography of the European ground squirrel (EGS) was used to interpret the evolutionary and palaeogeographical history of the species in Europe and to shed light on its glacial–interglacial dynamic. The EGS is a steppe‐inhabiting species and the westernmost member of the genus in the Palaearctic region. We have analysed 915 specimens throughout the present natural range by employing mitochondrial DNA sequences (cytochrome b gene) and 12 nuclear microsatellite markers. The reconstructed phylogeography divides the species into two main geographical groups, with deep substructuring within both groups. Bulgaria is the centre of the ancestral area, and it also has the highest genetic diversity within the species. The northernmost group of the EGS survived in the southern part of Pannonia throughout several glacial–interglacial cycles. Animals from this population probably repeatedly colonized areas further to the north and west during the glacial periods, while in the interglacial periods, the EGS distribution contracted back to this Pannonian refugium. The EGS thus represents a species with a glacial expansion/interglacial contraction palaeogeographical dynamics, and the Pannonian and southeastern Balkanian steppes are supported as cryptic refugia of continental climate during Pleistocene interglacials.  相似文献

The long-term Colônia record is located in the Atlantic rainforest domain in Brazil (23°52′S 46°42′20″W 900 m a.s.l.). The 780 cm long core CO3 provides a coverage of a complete interglacial/glacial cycle for the first time in a neotropical rainforest. Information on the behavior of tropical climates compared to global changes in temperatures indicates specific climate responses in terms of precipitation at these latitudes. Winter extratropical circulation was very active during the last interglacial and most of the glacial. Floristic composition of the rainforest changed several times in each phase of expansion, twice during the interglacial, and three times during glacial episodes. Araucaria was well developed in the area of São Paulo until the beginning of the first dry phase of the glacial at ca. 50,000 yr B.P. Changes in insolation controlled the expansion of the rainforest and the tropical hydrological cycle as evidenced by a strong precession signal. However precession had no impact on regional climatic features. The two interglacials (MIS 5e and Holocene) showed completely different patterns attesting to the continuous evolution of the forest. The biodiversity index (Shannon–Wiener Index) remained high during both the interglacial and glacial attesting to the permanence of small patches of rainforest refugia during drier phases. The lowest Shannon-Wiener Indexes were recorded between 23,000 and 12,000 yr B.P. and 40,000 and 30,000 yr B.P. and characterize two marked phases of stress for the rainforest.  相似文献
