A field experiment in which main‐crop potatoes were grown every other year was conducted on a sandy soil from 1994 to 1999. The aim of the experiment was to control soil‐borne pathogens of potato with ecologically sound methods. Potato grown as a trap crop from the end of April to the end of June (8 wk) was used to control potato cyst nematodes (PCN) (Globodera pallida), and its effects on other important soil pathogens and on the growth of a subsequent potato crop were also assessed. Additional experimental treatments were a potato crop from which the haulm was removed and a green manure crop. Three potato cultivars with different degrees of resistance to PCN were grown as the main crop. Duplicate sets of the experiment were run concurrently. The PCN were effectively controlled by the potato trap crop. When a highly resistant potato cultivar was grown as a main crop after the trap crop, the post‐harvest soil infestation was very low. When a moderately resistant cultivar was grown after the trap crop the soil infestation also remained low. When the trap crop was alternated with a susceptible potato cultivar as a main crop, soil infestation increased slightly, but the degree of control when compared with no trap crop averaged 96%. Soil infestation with root‐knot nematodes (mainly Meloidogyne hapla) increased when potato was grown as a trap crop, but soil infestation with the root‐lesion nematode Pratylenchus crenatus was not affected. Stem canker caused by Rhizoctonia solani was not affected by the trap crop but black scurf (sclerotia of R. solani) on tubers was reduced. Soil infestation with Verticillium dahliae declined in one of the duplicate sets of the experiment but not in the other. However, stem infections by V. dahliae were significantly decreased in both sets, although the effect depended on the PCN‐resistance level of the potato cultivar. When a highly resistant potato cultivar was grown Verticillium stem infections were not significantly affected, they were decreased with a moderately resistant cultivar but the decrease was most pronounced with a PCN‐susceptible cultivar. Senescence of a following potato crop was not influenced by the trap crop when a highly PCN‐resistant cultivar was grown, but it was delayed in the case of a moderately resistant or a susceptible cultivar, resulting in higher tuber yields for those cultivars. The experiment proved that a trap crop can be an alternative to chemical soil disinfection but, for several reasons, the potato itself is not an ideal crop for this purpose; a trap crop other than potato must be developed.  相似文献

Calcium sulfate, a common soil amendment was applied at rates of 0, 1,000 and 2,000 kg ha-1 to flooded rice plots treated with urea-N (128 kg ha-1). Experimental plots were drill-seeded with Toro-2, a mid-season long-grain rice cultivar, and CH4 emissions were measured over the first cropping season. Over the 70 d sampling season, the low and high rate of CaSO4 reduced CH4 evolution 29 and 46%, respectively, compared to control plots. No significant correlation between soil temperature (0, 5, 10 cm depths) and CH4 emission was observed.  相似文献

Growth and development of three plant accessions with potential for use as trap crops for potato cyst nematodes (PCN), Solanum sisymbriifolium and two varieties of S. nigrum, were studied under 12 h and 17 h photoperiods. In pot experiments, rate of plant emergence, plant height, and shoot and root mass were greater for the S. nigrum varieties ‘90‐4750‐188’ and ‘88‐4750‐061’ than for S. sisymbriifolium and markedly greater than for a S. nigrum variety found as a weed of arable fields in The Netherlands. However, the last mentioned S. nigrum variety produced the most berries. Plant height and shoot weight of all the S. nigrum varieties were greater under the longer photoperiod, whereas the root mass was hardly affected. Plant height and shoot weight of S. sisymbriifolium also were greater under the longer photoperiod but the root weight was less. Under field conditions, with sowing dates from the end of March to mid August, S. sisymbriifolium and S. nigrum‘90‐4750‐188’ grew better than S. nigrum‘88‐4750‐061’. In contrast to S. nigrum, S. sisymbriifolium appeared resistant to night frosts in autumn. The stubbles of both S. sisymbriifolium and S. nigrum showed good regrowth after cutting the plants 5 or 10 cm above the soil surface 11 wk after sowing. In a pot experiment, all the plant accessions strongly reduced the numbers of juveniles in cysts compared with flax. Tolerance to Globodera rostochiensis of S. sisymbriifolium and S. nigrum‘90‐4750‐188’ was investigated in pot experiments under glasshouse conditions in sandy soil at pH 4.8 and 6.0. At soil infestation levels ranging from 0 to 56 juveniles ml?1 soil, S. sisymbriifolium appeared much more tolerant than S. nigrum‘90‐4750‐188’. Shoot yield of S. nigrum decreased markedly with increasing soil infestation and root weight also decreased, except at pH 4.8 and light infestation levels. Both S. sisymbriifolium and S. nigrum grew better at soil pH 4.8 than 6.0. The proportion of lateral roots in the total root mass increased in both species with increasing PCN infestation and soil pH. However, although the proportion of lateral roots in plants grown at soil pH 6.0 was greater at PCN infestations up to 14 juveniles ml?1 soil, the proportion of laterals in S. nigrum was considerably less at PCN infestations of 56 juveniles ml?1 soil. The proportion of PCN juveniles hatching was similar for the two species and decreased slightly with increasing initial nematode population densities.  相似文献

Trap cropping, though promising, has had little evaluation in greenhouses. This study evaluated eggplant, Solanum melongena L. (Solanaceae), as a trap crop for two whitefly species, Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) and Bemisia argentifolii Bellows & Perring (both Hemiptera: Aleyrodidae), on greenhouse poinsettia, Euphorbia pulcherrima Willd. ex Koltz (Euphorbiaceae). Because the two whitefly species co‐occur in greenhouses, a common trap crop for both whiteflies is desirable. When adults were provided a choice between eggplant and poinsettia in a cage, 60% of B. argentifolii and 98% of T. vaporariorum were observed on eggplant after 3 days. However, when adults were given eggplant after first settling on poinsettia, only 38% of B. argentifolii were later found on eggplant, whereas 95% of T. vaporariorum moved to eggplant. In a greenhouse experiment, eggplant did not affect either the spatial distribution or density of adult B. argentifolii on poinsettias. In contrast, eggplant changed the spatial distribution of T. vaporariorum within 3 days by attracting and retaining the adults. However, the attractiveness of eggplant did not result in a reduced number of T. vaporariorum on poinsettias compared with poinsettias in monoculture. Adult T. vaporariorum mortality was high on poinsettias and this likely caused adult density on poinsettias in monoculture to decrease as fast as that under trap cropping. A simulation model was developed to examine how adult whitefly mortality on poinsettia influences trap cropping effectiveness. When whitefly mortality was high, simulated densities were similar to the experimental data. This reveals an unexpected factor, pest mortality on the main crop, that can influence the relative effectiveness of trap cropping. Our results indicate that eggplant will not work unilaterally as a trap crop for B. argentifolii. For T. vaporariorum, attraction to eggplant might be useful as a trap crop system when whitefly mortality on the main crop is not high.  相似文献

Summary Calcium ions affect the gating of Ca currents. Surface charge is involved but to what extent is unknown. We have examined this, using isolated nerve cell bodies ofHelix aspersa and the combined microelectrode-suction pipette method for voltage-clamp and internal perfusion. We found that Ba and Sr currents produced by substitution of these ions for extracellular Ca ions are activated at less positive potentials than Ca currents. Mg ions do not permeate the Ca channel and changes in [Mg]0 produce shifts in the activation-potential curves that are comparable to the effects of changes in [Ba]0 or [Sr]0. Inactivation of Ba currents also occurs at less positive potentials. Perfusion intracellularly with EGTA reduced inactivation of Ca currents as a function of potential, but did not shift the inactivation-potential curve. Hence, Ca current-dependent inactivation which is blocked by intracellular EGTA probably does not involve a similar change of intracellular surface potential. The voltage shifts of activation and inactivation produced by extracellular divalent cations used singly or in mixtures can be described by the Gouy-Chapman theory for the diffuse double layer with binding (Gilbert & Ehrenstein, 1969; McLaughlin, Szabo & Eisenman, 1971). From the surface potential values and the Boltzman distribution, we have computed surface concentrations that predict the following experimental observations: 1) saturation of current-concentration relationships when surface potential is changing maximally; 2) the increase in peak current when Ca ions are replaced by Sr or Ba ions; and 3) the greater inhibitory effect of Mg onI Ba thanI Ca. Theory indicates that surface charge cannot be screened completely even at 1m [Mg]0 and thus that Ca channel properties must be evaluated in the light of surface charge effects. For example, after correction for surface charge effects the relative permeabilities of Ca, Ba and Sr ions are equivalent. In the presence of Co ions, however, Ca ions are more permeable than Ba ions suggesting a channel binding site may be involved.  相似文献

Vicia faba plants were grown under drought conditions and variously supplemented with calcium. Drought stress markedly inhibited the growth of Vicia faba plants. Ca2+ ameliorated to a large extent this inhibition; fresh weight, dry mass, chlorophyll and water contents were variably improved. Membranes were, also, negatively affected by drought stress and percentage leakage was elevated. Concomitantly, the efflux of K+ and Ca2+ was enhanced by drought but lowered by supplemental Ca2+. In addition, membranes of droughted plants were sensitive to the Ca2+ channel blockers lanthanum, nifedipine or verapamil more than those of control plants. These blockers significantly increased the efflux of K+ and Ca2+ as well as percentage leakage particularly in those of droughted plants. The above results indicated that the functioning of the calcium channels was negatively affected when Vicia faba was grown under drought conditions. However, much of the drought-induced disorders including sensitivity towards the applied calcium channel blockers could be ameliorated by supplemental Ca2+.  相似文献

Spraying Chinese cabbage seedlings [Brassica pekinensis (Lour.) Rupr.] with the growth retardant daminozide (succinic acid-2,2-dimethylhydrazide) reduced tipburn of the mature plants. As the concentration of daminozide increased, the reduction in tipburn damage was correlated with increased calcium content in young susceptible leaves. This effect was much more pronounced in plants that were misted once a day during the head formation period.Incubation of detached Chinese cabbage leaves for 48 h (in the dark) in solutions which contained either EDTA or EGTA caused characteristic lesions at the leaf tips. The extent of the damage was reduced by including CaCl2 in the solutions. Leaves which were incubated in a solution of EDTA+GA3 or EGTA+GA3 were severely affected, with the latter solution being the more harmful. GA3 alone did not enhance tipburn. CaCl2 greatly reduced the effect of a complex of chelating agents and GA3. Leaves derived from daminozide-treated plants which were incubated in EDTA+GA3 were less affected with tipburn lesions than leaves of control plants treated with the same solutions. When detached leaves were water-stressed for 24 h prior to incubation in these solutions, the severity of tipburn symptoms increased. The possible interactions between GA, calcium chelation and tipburn development are discussed.Contribution no. 1171-E, 1984 series, from the ARO, The Volcani Center Bet Dagan, Israel.  相似文献

Ninety accessions of non‐tuber bearing Solanaceae were screened for (i) resistance to and (ii) stimulatory effect on juvenile hatch of potato cyst nematodes, and (iii) their growth under temperate climatic conditions. All plant species belonging to the genus Solanum tested induced hatching but this effect was most pronounced for plant species of the Solanum nigrum complex. Hatching of juveniles was hardly or not stimulated by other plant genera of the Solanaceae. Solanum sisymbriifolium combined a high hatching effect with complete resistance to both Globodera rosiochiensis and G pallida. Two S. nigrum varieties showed full resistance to G rostochiensis and a high level of resistance to G pallida. Moreover, S. sisymbriifolium and the two varieties of S. nigrum performed very well under Dutch field conditions and, therefore, they are suggested as candidate trap crops for the control of potato cyst nematodes.  相似文献

Optimal density of spring rape (Brassica napus L.) crop stand was determined by plant photosynthetic characteristics at the beginning of flowering. As crop density increased from 100 to 350 plants/m2, leaf surface index (LSI) of the crop was found to increase by 18.2–80.2%, and LSI decreased by 38.8–67.3% as compared with the sparsest crop (50–100 plants/m2). LSI depended on the rate of incident PAR reaching 0.5 and 0.25 heights of the crop stand and to the soil surface. When crop density increased from 100 to 350 plants/m2, the photosynthetic potential (PP) of the crop increased 1.8 times as compared with the sparsest crop. PP of the densest rape crop stand was 3 times lower than in the sparsest crop. When the crop density increased from 100 to 250 plants/m2, the daily increment in biomass calculated per leaf surface unit increased by 27.0% as compared with the sparsest crop and depended on LSI. When leaf area decreased, the daily increment in biomass calculated per leaf surface unit declined; in the densest stand, this characteristic was by 58.3% lower than in the sparsest crop. Rape productivity at the flowering stage depended on the crop density, LSI of plants, rate of PAR reaching 0.5 and 0.25 heights of the crop stand and to the soil surface, PP, and the daily increment in biomass calculated per leaf surface unit. Crop productivity at the flowering stage and the rape seed yield were associated by a significant parabolic relationship. When crop density increased from 100 to 350 plants/m2, seed yield per plant considerably decreased (by 33.1–78.5%) as compared with the sparsest crop. The greatest influence on seed yield per plant was exerted by LSI and the daily increment in biomass calculated per leaf surface unit. When crop density increased to 250–300 plants/m2, the seed yield considerably rose (by 28.6–58.8%) as compared with the sparsest crop; when this index reached 300–350 plants/m2, the seed yield decreased because plant growth was suppressed, with the productivity reduced. The results thus obtained suggest that the photometric characteristics of spring rape were at optimum at crop density of 100–250 plants/m2. The agroclimatic conditions of Lithuania ensure potential for rapid accumulation of total biomass and high seed yield.  相似文献

It is important to assess the tolerance of new potato cultivars with partial resistance to potato cyst nematode attack. The experiments described here are intended to quantify tolerance adequately using a minimum of resources. When test plants were spaced widely in the field trials it was also possible to estimate their resistance levels but standard plant spacing allowed roots of neighbouring plants to encroach on a test plant's root space and to interfere with attempts to assay resistance. Standard plant spacing did, however, give more realistic yields per plant and competition from neighbouring plants was standardised by surrounding each test plant by four identical guard plants (cv. Désirée). Regressions of yield on severity of nematode attack were drawn when nematode infestation varied naturally across the trial site or when different levels of attack were created by applying nematicide at a range of dose rates. Cara was the most tolerant cultivar tested, with a complete spectrum of tolerance shown by other cultivars/clones. Some clones with a high degree of resistance were intolerant and it is precisely these that this type of test seeks to identify.  相似文献

Solanum sisymbriifolium is an interesting trap crop to control potato cyst nematodes. A series of field experiments was carried out in the Netherlands between 2001 and 2003 to test its performance under field conditions. Experimental factors included sowing time, sowing density and site. Rate of germination, plant establishment and change over time in light interception were monitored. Growth analysis was performed at 7 and 14 weeks after emergence, and dry weight of component plant parts was determined. Time to 50% emergence was 36–38 days for planting at early April and declined to minimum values of ca 8–11 days when planting took place in June, July or the first week of August. When planted later, time to 50% germination increased again. Time to 50% light interception showed a similar trend with sowing time; minimum time was 35–40 days for planting between June and half of July. Planting before May did not advance crop growth. Crop performance was very variable across years and sites when planted later than the end of July to beginning of August. Dry matter accumulation up to 400 g m?2 was found at 7 weeks after emergence and up to 1040 g m?2 after 14 weeks. At 7 weeks after emergence, dry matter production increased with planting density (range 50–400 m?2), but no statistically significant differences were found after 14 weeks. A seed rate of 100 m?2 seems generally sufficient. Radiation use efficiency was 1.69 g MJ?1 PAR (SE = 0.0208). Dry matter accumulation (2002–2003) was somewhat higher in Wageningen (51°58’N) on light sandy soil than in Flevoland (52°31′N) on clay soil and in Drenthe (52°51′N) on reclaimed peat soil. It is concluded that above‐ground growth of S. sisymbriifolium in the Netherlands is adequate if planted between early May and the end of July.  相似文献

The effects of different levels of B (from 9.3 to 93 M B) and Ca (from 0.68 to 5.44 mM Ca) on plant development, nitrogen fixation, and mineral composition of pea (Pisum sativum L. cv. Argona) grown in symbiosis with Rhizobium leguminosarum bv. viciae 3841 and under salt stress, were analysed. The addition of extra B and extra Ca to the nutrient solution prevented the reduction caused by 75 mM NaCl of plant growth and the inhibition of nodulation and nitrogen fixation. The number of nodules recovered by the increase of Ca concentration at any B level, but only nodules developed at high B and high Ca concentrations could fix nitrogen. Addition of extra B and Ca during plant growth restored nodule organogenesis and structure, which was absolutely damaged by high salt. The increase in salt tolerance of symbiotic plants mediated by B and Ca can be co-related with the recovery of the contents of some nutrients. Salinity produced a decrease of B and Ca contents both in shoots and in nodulated roots, being increased by the supplement of both elements in the nutrient solution. Salinity also reduced the content in plants of other nutrients important for plant development and particularly for symbiotic nitrogen fixation, as K and Fe. A balanced nutrition of B and Ca (55.8 M B, 2.72 mM Ca) was able to counter-act the deficiency of these nutrients in salt-stressed plants, leading to a huge increase in salinity tolerance of symbiotic pea plants. The necessity of nutritional studies to successfully cultivate legumes in saline soils is discussed and proposed.  相似文献

The invasion of a novel host species can create a mismatch in host choice and offspring survival (performance) when native parasitoids attempt to exploit the invasive host without being able to circumvent its resistance mechanisms. Invasive hosts can therefore act as evolutionary trap reducing parasitoids'' fitness and this may eventually lead to their extinction. Yet, escape from the trap can occur when parasitoids evolve behavioral avoidance or a physiological strategy compatible with the trap host, resulting in either host‐range expansion or a complete host‐shift. We developed an individual based model to investigate which conditions promote parasitoids to evolve behavioral preference that matches their performance, including host‐trap avoidance, and which conditions lead to adaptations to the unsuitable hosts. The model was inspired by solitary endo‐parasitoids attacking larval host stages. One important aspect of these conditions was reduced host survival during incompatible interaction, where a failed parasitization attempt by a parasitoid resulted not only in death of her offspring but also in host killing. This non‐reproductive host mortality had a strong influence on the likelihood of establishment of novel host–parasitoid relationship, in some cases constraining adaptation to the trap host species. Moreover, our model revealed that host‐search efficiency and genetic variation in host‐preference play a key role in the likelihood that parasitoids will include the suboptimal host in their host range, or will evolve behavioral avoidance resulting in specialization and host‐range conservation, respectively. Hence, invasive species might change the evolutionary trajectory of native parasitoid species, which is important for predicting biocontrol ability of native parasitoids towards novel hosts.  相似文献

Soluble and insoluble oxalate and insoluble calcium were measured in the leaves of Phaseolus vulgaris. The plants were grown in nutrient solutions with two different concentrations of calcium. Two developmental stages of the leaves were studied. Although the content of insoluble calcium differs widely according to leaf age and growth conditions, the percentage bound in crystals is nearly the same in all cases. In the growing leaves, concentrations of total oxalate are independent of calcium supply, thus, showing that the known rise in numbers of crystals, and of cells containing them, is not induced via oxalate biosynthesis. Fully expanded leaves contain more oxalate when grown in a nutrient solution with higher calcium concentration. Amounts of oxalate in percent of dry weight are similar to those given in the literature for other legume leaves.  相似文献

Heterotrophic CaCO3-precipitating bacteria were isolated from biofilms on deteriorated ignimbrites, siliceous acidic rocks, from Morelia Cathedral (Mexico) and identified as Enterobacter cancerogenus (22e), Bacillus sp. (32a) and Bacillus subtilis (52g). In solid medium, 22e and 32a precipitated calcite and vaterite while 52g produced calcite. Urease activity was detected in these isolates and CaCO3 precipitation increased in the presence of urea in the liquid medium. In the presence of calcium, EPS production decreased in 22e and 32a and increased in 52g. Under laboratory conditions, ignimbrite colonization by these isolates only occurred in the presence of calcium and no CaCO3 was precipitated. Calcium may therefore be important for biofilm formation on stones. The importance of the type of stone, here a siliceous stone, on biological colonization is emphasized. This calcium effect has not been reported on calcareous materials. The importance of the effect of calcium on EPS production and biofilm formation is discussed in relation to other applications of CaCO3 precipitation by bacteria.  相似文献

Chondroitin and chondroitin sulfates belong to the family of glycosaminoglycans. They are most widely distributed in animal tissues, where they are involved in structural functions and in cell-cell communication. Their basic structures consist of a disaccharidic repeating unit of beta-D-glucuronic acid (GlcA) and 2-acetamido-2-deoxy-beta-D-galactose (GalNAc), this latter being sulfated at different positions. Molecular mechanics has been applied to calculate the adiabatic energy maps for each of the constituting disaccharides of chondroitin, chondroitin 4-sulfate, and chondroitin 6-sulfate using the MM3 force field. Based on these maps, higher levels of structural organization have been simulated. On one hand, the disordered state is studied through a Metropolis-based algorithm; the resulting chains present a behavior of semirigid polymers, with an order of stiffness: chondroitin 4-sulfate > chondroitin > chondroitin 6-sulfate. On the other hand, the exploration of the stable ordered forms leads to numerous helical conformations of comparable energies. Several of these conformations correspond to the experimentally observed ones. The ability of coordination with cations has also been explored, resulting in a preferential stereospecificity for calcium ions when compared to sodium ions.  相似文献

Summary The structure of the triad junction was examined in thin sections of mammalian fast-twitch skeletal muscle. The aims of the experiments were twofold: first, to examine relationships between the contents of the junctional gap and the terminal cisternae that could be significant in excitation-contraction coupling and, second, to look for structures in the transverse tubules that could support a calcium buffer system. Procedures known to stabilize cytoskeletal elements were used in an attempt to retain the original structure. Feet, pillars and bridges were often seen side by side in the same junction. In one such junction, the average center-to-center spacing between four bridges was 30.9±1.7 nm and between five foot-like structures was 29.2±1.4 nm. The subunit structure of the feet could be seen in many sections. The lumen of the terminal cisternae was filled with a tetragonal network of calsequestrin which formed parallel strands near the junctional membrane, in register with the feet. The strands overlay the area occupied by rods seen in freeze-fracture replicas of terminal cisterna membrane. The contents of the transverse tubules were aggregated into bands, or tethers, which extended across the short axis of the tubule at regular intervals of about 30 nm. The tethers consisted of flattened discs, stacked across the long axis of the tubule, aligned with the junctional feet. Lanthanum staining of the tethers indicated cationic binding sites that could buffer luminal calcium ion concentration in the vicinity of the voltage sensor for contraction. It is suggested (i) that the control of calcium concentration near the voltage sensor is necessary for normal activation, (ii) that feet, pillars and bridges are different images of a spanning structure, and (iii) that the regular alignment of tethers, feet and calsequestrin is functionally significant in excitation-contraction coupling.  相似文献
