A high resolution micropalaeontological study of the core MD 04-2797 CQ recovered in the Sicilian–Tunisian Strait provides insights into the paleoclimatic history of the Mediterranean Sea at the transition between the western and eastern basin over the last 30 ka. Using the analysis of dinoflagellate cyst and planktonic foraminiferal assemblages, we reconstruct the paleoenvironmental changes that took place in this region. High abundances of cold temperate dinocyst species (Nematosphaeropsis labyrinthus, Spiniferites elongatus, Bitectatodinium tepikiense) and the polar planktonic foraminifera Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (left coiling) reveal three major cooling events synchronous with North Atlantic Henrich events 1 and 2 (H1 and H2) and the European and North Atlantic Younger Dryas event. During the Holocene, the presence of warm dinocyst species (Spiniferites mirabilis and Impagidinium aculeatum) and planktonic foraminifera (Globorotalia inflata and Globigerinoides ruber), reflects a significant increase of sea surface temperatures in the western Mediterranean basin, but a full warming was not recorded until 1500 years after the onset of the Holocene. Moreover, our results show that the Holocene was interrupted by at least four brief cooling events at ~ 9.2 ka, ~ 8 ka, ~ 7 ka and ~ 2.2 ka cal. BP, which may be correlated to climatic events recorded in Greenland ice cores and in the Atlantic Ocean.  相似文献

In the austral summer of 2006/7 the ANDRILL MIS (ANtarctic geological DRILLing-McMurdo Ice Shelf) project recovered a 1285 m sediment core from beneath the Ross Ice Shelf near Ross Island, Antarctica in a flexural moat associated with volcanic loading. The upper ~ 600 m of this core contain sediments recording 38 glacial/interglacial cycles of Early Pliocene to Pleistocene time, including 13 discrete diatomite units (DUs). The longest of these, DU XI, is ~ 76 m-thick, and has been assigned an Early to Mid-Pliocene age (5–3 Ma). A detailed record of the siliceous microfossil assemblages in DU XI is used in conjunction with geochemical and sedimentological data to subdivide DU XI into four discrete subunits of continuous sedimentation. Within each subunit, changes in diatom assemblages have been correlated with the δ18O record, providing a temporal resolution up to 600 yr, and allowing for the construction of a detailed age model and calculation of associated sediment accumulation rates within DU XI. Results indicate a productivity-dominated sedimentary record with greater proportions of hemipelagic mud accumulating during relatively cool periods. This implies that even during periods of substantial warmth, Milankovitch-paced changes in Antarctic ice volume can be linked to ecological changes recorded in diatom assemblages.  相似文献

The Marie cave, discovered to the north of Montpellier, Hérault (France), has yielded a fauna of 28 vertebrates, out of which 23 are small to large mammals, notably Mammuthus primigenius. The few discovered artefacts have been attributed to the Upper Palaeolithic, which is in agreement with the two radiocarbon dates (31450 14C yr BP for the low level, and 28680 14C yr BP near the cave's entrance). The palynological study shows the existence (i) of a wooded steppe on the plateau, and (ii) of a riverine forest with alders in the valleys, associated with Mediterranean taxa. These data confirm the presence in Languedoc of Mediterranean species around 30000 yr BP, which qualifies the hypothesis of exclusively Spanish and Italian refuges during glacial periods.  相似文献

Two cores, one 1141-cm long (An-S) and the other 885-cm long (An-A), were retrieved from Anguli-nuur Lake (41°18′–24′N, 114°20′–27′E, ~ 1315 masl), one of the largest lakes in the transition zone between a semi-humid and semi-arid climate parallel to the present limit of the southeast monsoon along the southeastern Inner Mongolia Plateau in north China. Mineral-magnetic parameters (χlf, ARM, IRM300mT, SIRM and IRM? 300mT) were measured on An-S and two additional parameters (χARM and HIRM) and four inter-parametric ratios (χARM/SIRM, IRM300mT/SIRM, IRM? 300mT/SIRM and SIRM/χlf) were calculated. Potential sources of these lake sediments (catchment soils and dune materials close to the lake and in a distant sand plain) were sampled, and the magnetic properties of the surface-material specimens were measured. A chronological model was developed for An-S by comparing and combining AMS14C dates of An-S with 137Cs, 210Pb and AMS14C dates of An-A. With the help of surface-material magnetism, the magnetic data of An-S in combination with particle size, TOC and C/N and pollen analyses indicate the environmental changes during the last ~ 10,000 years around this lake. Conditions began to ameliorate at 10,900 cal. yr BP (9600 14C yr BP) and thus relatively wet and warm environments prevailed during 10,900–8900 cal. yr BP (9600–8000 14C yr BP). The Holocene optimum or the wettest and warmest conditions, was during 8900–7400 cal. yr BP (8000–6500 14C yr BP). The environment began to deteriorate from 7400 cal. yr BP (6500 14C yr BP) and the driest and coolest conditions occurred during 2200–480 cal. yr BP. There may have been a minor amelioration after 480 cal. yr BP. The inferred changes in palaeoenvironmental conditions around Anguli-nuur Lake are broadly in agreement with those around most other sites on the Inner Mongolia Plateau.  相似文献

The Redox-Optimized ROS Balance [R-ORB] hypothesis postulates that the redox environment [RE] is the main intermediary between mitochondrial respiration and reactive oxygen species [ROS]. According to R-ORB, ROS emission levels will attain a minimum vs. RE when respiratory rate (VO2) reaches a maximum following ADP stimulation, a tenet that we test herein in isolated heart mitochondria under forward electron transport [FET]. ROS emission increased two-fold as a function of changes in the RE (~ 400 to ~ 900 mV·mM) in state 4 respiration elicited by increasing glutamate/malate (G/M). In G/M energized mitochondria, ROS emission decreases two-fold for RE ~ 500 to ~ 300 mV·mM in state 3 respiration at increasing ADP. Stressed mitochondria released higher ROS, that was only weakly dependent on RE under state 3. As a function of VO2, the ROS dependence on RE was strong between ~ 550 and ~ 350 mV·mM, when VO2 is maximal, primarily due to changes in glutathione redox potential. A similar dependence was observed with stressed mitochondria, but over a significantly more oxidized RE and ~ 3-fold higher ROS emission overall, as compared with non-stressed controls. We conclude that under non-stressful conditions mitochondrial ROS efflux decreases when the RE becomes less reduced within a range in which VO2 is maximal. These results agree with the R-ORB postulate that mitochondria minimize ROS emission as they maximize VO2 and ATP synthesis. This relationship is altered quantitatively, but not qualitatively, by oxidative stress although stressed mitochondria exhibit diminished energetic performance and increased ROS release.  相似文献

We present a geochemical record of a 113.6-cm sediment core (LPT V) from Lagoa da Pata, which is located in the forested upper Rio Negro basin. The record reveals significant changes in the environmental history of Amazonia during the late Quaternary. The results of biogeochemical analyses revealed three hydrological and climatic regimes from 50,000 to 10,000 cal yr BP. The first phase, between 50,000 and 26,300 cal yr BP, was characterized by a relatively wet climate as suggested by relatively high total organic carbon (TOC) and chlorophyll derivate concentrations, indicating high productivity linked to a high lake level. A decrease of the TOC and chlorophyll derivate accumulation rates between 43,100 cal yr BP and 26,300 cal yr BP marks a decrease in the productivity linked to a reduced lake level, indicating a decrease in moisture at the end of this phase. The second phase, between 26,300 and 15,300 cal yr BP, was characterized by a decrease in productivity, reaching a minimum at 21,950 cal yr BP, as indicated by a minima in sedimentary chlorophyll and TOC accumulation rates. Values of δ13C increased by 5‰ in relation to the preceding phase, indicating an influence of the C4 organic matter. High iron concentrations and accumulation rates, related to intense erosion of the lateritic crust in the watershed, were observed. All of the observations indicate a dry phase during this period. A third phase, from approximately 15,300 to 10,000 cal yr BP, was characterized by an increase in lacustrine productivity, as shown by an increased in TOC and chlorophyll derivate concentrations and accumulation rates. These increases likely correspond to a lake level rise due to a wetter climate.  相似文献

A sediment core located on the West Spitzbergen margin in the Fram Strait (78°54.931′N, 6°46.005′E, water depth: 1497 m) was analyzed for its dinocyst content in order to reconstruct hydroclimatic variations of the last 2500 years. The relative abundance of dinocyst taxa and principal component analysis show a major transition at about 300 cal. years BP. It is characterized by the disappearance of thermophilic taxa Spiniferites mirabilis-hyperacanthus and Impagidinium sphaericum and the increase of polar–subpolar taxa Impagidinium pallidum and Pentapharsodinium dalei. Sea-surface temperature (SST) estimates suggest warmer conditions than present (anomaly~+2 °C) averaging at 7 °C in summer until 300 cal. years BP, although cooling pulses are recorded around 1700, 1500, 1200 and 800 cal. years BP. The last 300 years were marked by a cooling from 7.6 to 3.5 °C and sea-ice cover increasing up to 7 months/yr. The results demonstrate that the Fram Strait area is sensitive to hydroclimatic variations, notably with respect to sea-ice and SSTs, which are linked to the relative strength of northward flow of North Atlantic waters to the East and southward outflow of cold and fresh waters from the Arctic Ocean. Based on our data, the warmest part of our record around 1320 cal. years BP is the only interval of the last 2500 years that provides a possible analogue for the modern post-AD 2000 interval, which is characterized by sea-ice free conditions.  相似文献

Paleoceanographic variability at southern high latitude Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Site 747 was investigated in this study through the interval which spans the Middle Miocene Climate Transition (MMCT). Between 15.0 and 12.2 million years ago (Ma), foraminiferal δ18O records derived from both benthic (Cibicidoides spp.) and planktonic taxa (Globorotalia praescitula and Globigerina bulloides) reveal a history of changes in water column thermal and salinity structure and a strong imprint of seasonality. Prior to the MMCT, in the interval between 14.35 and 13.9 Ma, G. bulloides displays relatively high δ18O values similar to those of G. praescitula, interpreted to indicate weakening of the thermocline and/or increased seasonality with cooler early-spring and/or late-fall temperatures. Following this interval, G. bulloides δ18O values diverge significantly from benthic and G. praescitula values, with G. bulloides values remaining relatively low for at least 600 kyr following the benthic foraminiferal δ18O shift during the MMCT at ~ 13.9 Ma. This divergence in δ18O records occurs in direct association with the Mi3 cooling and glaciation event and may suggest: (1) a strengthening of the vertical temperature gradient, with greater cooling of deep waters than surface waters, (2) changes in the depth habitat of G. bulloides, (3) changes in the dominant season of G. bulloides calcification, (4) modification of surface-water δ18O values in association with enhanced sea-ice formation, (5) increased surface-water carbonate ion concentration, and/or (6) a significant decrease in surface-water salinity across the MMCT. The first of these possible scenarios is not likely, particularly in light of recent Mg/Ca evidence for significant surface-water cooling in the Southern Ocean associated with the MMCT. Of the remaining possibilities, we favor a change in surface salinity to explain the observed trends in δ18O values and hypothesize that surface salinity may have decreased by up to 2 salinity units at ~ 13.9 Ma. In this scenario, the development of a lower-salinity Antarctic surface layer coincided with regional cooling of both surface and deep waters of the Southern Ocean during the Mi3 glaciation of East Antarctica, and contributed into the dominance of Neogloboquadrina spp. between 13.8 and 13.2 Ma. Additionally, the distinct patterns observed in planktonic foraminiferal δ18O records spanning the MMCT correspond with changes in the vertical δ13C gradient between planktonic and benthic foraminiferal records and major changes in planktonic foraminiferal assemblages at Site 747, providing further evidence of the environmental significance of this climatic transition.  相似文献

Sulforaphane (SFN), a dietary phase-2 enzyme inducer that mitigates cellular oxidative stress through nuclear factor erythroid 2-related factor 2 (Nrf2) activation, is known to exhibit beneficial effects in the vessel wall. For instance, it inhibits vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMC) proliferation, a major event in atherosclerosis and restenosis after angioplasty. In particular, SFN attenuates the mitogenic and pro-inflammatory actions of platelet-derived growth factor (PDGF) and tumor necrosis factor-α (TNFα), respectively, in VSMCs. Nevertheless, the vasoprotective role of SFN has not been examined in the setting of obesity characterized by hyperleptinemia and insulin resistance. Using the mouse model of western diet-induced obesity, the present study demonstrates for the first time that subcutaneous delivery of SFN (0.5 mg/Kg/day) for ~ 3 weeks significantly attenuates neointima formation in the injured femoral artery [↓ (decrease) neointima/media ratio by ~ 60%; n = 5–8]. This was associated with significant improvements in metabolic parameters, including ↓ weight gain by ~ 52%, ↓ plasma leptin by ~ 42%, ↓ plasma insulin by ~ 63%, insulin resistance [↓ homeostasis model assessment of insulin resistance (HOMA-IR) index by ~ 73%], glucose tolerance (↓ AUCGTT by ~ 24%), and plasma lipid profile (e.g., ↓ triglycerides). Under in vitro conditions, SFN significantly decreased leptin-induced VSMC proliferation by ~ 23% (n = 5) with associated diminutions in leptin-induced cyclin D1 expression and the phosphorylation of p70S6kinase and ribosomal S6 protein (n = 3–4). The present findings reveal that, in addition to improving systemic metabolic parameters, SFN inhibits leptin-induced VSMC proliferative signaling that may contribute in part to the suppression of injury-induced neointima formation in diet-induced obesity.  相似文献

The purpose of the work was to provide a crystallographic demonstration of the venerable idea that CO photolyzed from ferrous heme-a3 moves to the nearby cuprous ion in the cytochrome c oxidases. Crystal structures of CO-bound cytochrome ba3-oxidase from Thermus thermophilus, determined at ~ 2.8–3.2 Å resolution, reveal a Fe–C distance of ~ 2.0 Å, a Cu–O distance of 2.4 Å and a Fe–C–O angle of ~ 126°. Upon photodissociation at 100 K, X-ray structures indicate loss of Fea3–CO and appearance of CuB–CO having a Cu–C distance of ~ 1.9 Å and an O–Fe distance of ~ 2.3 Å. Absolute FTIR spectra recorded from single crystals of reduced ba3–CO that had not been exposed to X-ray radiation, showed several peaks around 1975 cm? 1; after photolysis at 100 K, the absolute FTIR spectra also showed a significant peak at 2050 cm? 1. Analysis of the ‘light’ minus ‘dark’ difference spectra showed four very sharp CO stretching bands at 1970 cm? 1, 1977 cm? 1, 1981 cm? 1, and 1985 cm? 1, previously assigned to the Fea3–CO complex, and a significantly broader CO stretching band centered at ~ 2050 cm? 1, previously assigned to the CO stretching frequency of CuB bound CO. As expected for light propagating along the tetragonal axis of the P43212 space group, the single crystal spectra exhibit negligible dichroism. Absolute FTIR spectrometry of a CO-laden ba3 crystal, exposed to an amount of X-ray radiation required to obtain structural data sets before FTIR characterization, showed a significant signal due to photogenerated CO2 at 2337 cm? 1 and one from traces of CO at 2133 cm? 1; while bands associated with CO bound to either Fea3 or to CuB in “light” minus “dark” FTIR difference spectra shifted and broadened in response to X-ray exposure. In spite of considerable radiation damage to the crystals, both X-ray analysis at 2.8 and 3.2 Å and FTIR spectra support the long-held position that photolysis of Fea3–CO in cytochrome c oxidases leads to significant trapping of the CO on the CuB atom; Fea3 and CuB ligation, at the resolutions reported here, are otherwise unaltered. The effect of nutrient addition on the growth of E. najas was evaluated in a dose response experiment using sand amended with phosphorus (P) and nitrogen (N), and in enrichment trials with N and P amendments to natural sediments. Plants, water and sediment came from lagoons of the Upper Paraná River Floodplain and from Itaipu Reservoir (Brazil). Relative growth rates (RGRs) of E. najas shoots, based on dry mass (DM), varied from 0.03 to 0.060 d−1 for both nutrients. Root:shoot biomass ratios were related to sediment exchangeable P (r = −0.419; P = 0.03) and N (r = −0.54; P = 0.006), however root RGR was not related to sediment nutrient concentrations. When natural sediments were amended with N and P, neither shoot nor root RGRs differed among treatments for substrata from either the reservoir or the floodplain lagoons (P > 0.05). Comparison of nutrient concentrations measured in natural sediments collected from several sites in both the Upper Paraná River Floodplain (range 49–213 μg P g−1 DM; 36–373 μg N g−1 DM) and Itaipu Reservoir (range 43–402 μg P g−1 DM; 7.9–238 μg N g−1 DM) showed that sediment N and P from these systems usually exceeded minimum requirements necessary for E. najas growth, as measured in the dose response experiment. Together, these results indicate that E. najas, at least in early stages of development, responds to sediment nutrient amendments and relies upon bottom sediments to meet its N and P requirements and that for at least two Brazilian ecosystems, growth of this species is not limited by insufficient sediment N or P. Thus, reducing N and P in water is not enough to control E. najas growth in short time periods in these ecosystems.  相似文献

This study comprised (1) a field survey of intertidal seagrass (Zostera capricorni) biomass, cover and photosynthetic potential and sediment characteristics at a range of contrasting sites in three New Zealand harbours, and (2) a microcosm experiment comparing plant responses to sediments from extant versus historical seagrass sites. The field survey showed that the sediment physico-chemical characteristics were generally consistent with the limited previous reports for Zostera environments, although the total P concentration range was higher (0.08–0.72 mg P g−1). Overall, 52% of variation in seagrass cover was explained by sediment water content (R = 0.54) and organic content (R = −0.56). Twenty-two percent of variation in seagrass biomass was explained by sediment total P and redox potential (both R = −0.35). Intra-harbour seagrass–sediment relationships were more significant (explaining up to 82% of plant variation) but harbour-specific. In the microcosm experiment, threefold higher Z. capricorni biomass was maintained on extant than historical sediments but not conclusively linked to measure sediment characteristics. Overall, the results of this study demonstrate that significant relations can exist between estuarine sediment conditions and Z. capricorni growth responses, and suggest that detrimental change in sediment conditions may be a contributing factor in seagrass decline.  相似文献

β-Lactoglobulin is one of the major components of bovine milk and it remains in a dimeric form under physiological conditions. The present contribution elucidates the structural change of β-lactoglobulin at pH 7.4 under the action of guanidine hydrochloride (GnHCl) and heat at the single molecular level. The only free cysteine (Cys-121) of β-lactoglobulin has been tagged with 7-diethylamino-3-(4-maleimidophenyl)-4-methylcoumarin (CPM) for this purpose. The dimeric structure of β-lactoglobulin found to undergoes a monomerization prior to the unfolding process upon being subjected to GnHCl. The hydrodynamic diameter of the native dimer, native monomer and the unfolded monomer has been estimated as ~ 55 Å, ~ 29 Å and ~ 37 Å, respectively. The free energy change for the monomerization and denaturation are respectively 1.57 kcal mol 1 and 8.93 kcal mol 1. With change in temperature, development of two types of aggregates (small aggregates and large aggregates) was observed, which is triggered by the formation of the monomeric structure of β-lactoglobulin. The hydrodynamic diameters of the smaller and larger aggregates have been estimated to be ~ 77 Å and ~ 117 Å, respectively. The formation of small aggregates turns out to be reversible whereas that of larger aggregates is irreversible. The free energy associated with these two steps are 0.69 kcal mol 1 and 9.09 kcal mol 1. Based on the size parameters, the smaller and larger aggregates have been proposed to contain ~twenty and ~sixty monomeric units. It has also been concluded that the monomeric subunits retain their native like secondary structure in these aggregates.  相似文献

Milk fatty acid (FA) composition of dairy cows from two grazing studies was examined. In the first study, effects of concentrate supplementation and pasture allowance were evaluated using 20 multiparous Holstein cows in five 4 × 4 Latin squares. The four treatments resulted from the combination of two pasture allowances (i.e., low, 25 versus high, 40 kg dry matter/cow/day) and two concentrate supplementation levels (i.e., 0 versus 1 kg concentrate/4 kg milk). No interactions occurred between concentrate supplementation and pasture allowance for milk FA composition. Concentrate supplementation increased short-chain FA content, and reduced the content of long-chain FA, trans11 C18:1, and cis9, trans11 conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) (1.36 versus 1.18 g/100 g). Concentrate supplementation increased saturated FA (58.6 versus 54.0 g/100 g) and reduced unsaturated FA content (39.9 versus 43.8 g/100 g). Grazing at high pasture allowance increased short-, medium-, and long-chain FA content, without affecting cis9, trans11 CLA content. Saturated FA content was higher (57.1 versus 55.6 g/100 g), and unsaturated FA content was lower (41.3 versus 42.5 g/100 g), when cows grazed at high pasture allowance. Concentrate supplementation reduced unsaturated FA and cis9, trans11 CLA in milk of dairy cows grazing at two pasture allowances. In the second study, two experiments evaluated effects of different energy supplements in grazing dairy cows. In Experiment 1, 25 multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to a cracked corn (CC) or a steam flaked corn (SFC) supplement containing 667 g/kg of corn grain plus a pelleted protein/mineral supplement. In Experiment 2, 22 multiparous Holstein cows were assigned to a ground corn grain (GC) or a non-forage fiber (NFF) supplement. The GC supplement contained 850 g/kg of corn grain, and the NFF supplement contained 440 g/kg of non-forage fiber sources (i.e., beet pulp, soyhulls, wheat middlings) that partially replaced corn grain. Milk FA composition was not affected by corn processing or carbohydrate source. The content of short-, medium-, long-chain FA, and cis9, trans11 CLA (2.5 g/100 g in Experiment 1; 2.1 g/100 g in Experiment 2) was similar between supplements in both experiments. The type of supplement did not affect the content of saturated (62.6 g/100 g in Experiment 1; 65.4 g/100 g in Experiment 2) and unsaturated FA (37.5 g/100 g in Experiment 1; 34.6 g/100 g in Experiment 2). Supplementation with supplements differing in the rate and extent of ruminal carbohydrate digestion did not affect the milk FA composition of grazing dairy cows.  相似文献

Rooted submerged macrophytes can absorb significant amounts of nutrients from both sediment and water. We investigated root morphology of Vallisneria natans in mesocosm plastic bins, in response to three types of sediment (sandy loam, clay, and a 50:50 (v/v) mixture of the two sediments) and two levels of water-column nutrient (well water and nutrient medium). Compared to the plants grown in the clay or mixed sediments, root diameter decreased (0.39–0.41 versus 0.36–0.37 mm) but total root length per plant increased (0.87–1.27 versus 1.14–1.62 m) when grown in sandy loam. Increase of nutrient availability in water column led to decreased specific root length (306–339 versus 258–281 m g−1). However, both sediment type and water-column nutrient had no impacts on root number (ranged from 19 to 24 number of roots per plant). Root weight ratio, root:leaf mass ratio and root:leaf length ratio generally decreased with enhanced nutrient availability in sediment or water. Plant growth was affected by sediment type alone (P < 0.05), rather than water-column nutrient (P > 0.05). However, plant N and P contents were significantly impacted by both sediment type (P  0.001) and water-column nutrient (P < 0.05). Increase of nutrient availability in sediment or water led to increased plant N (ranged from 2.47 to 4.77 mg g−1) and P concentrations (ranged from 42.8 to 62.0 mg g−1). These results indicate that considerable variation in root morphology of V. natans exists in response to the fertility of the sediment it is rooted in.  相似文献

The African baobab (Adansonia digitata L.) is an important multi-purpose fruit tree with high potential for domestication in drier Africa. Although adult individuals are well-known to be drought resistant, only little has been reported on how young baobab trees can survive drought. Therefore, the aim of this study was to examine short-term soil drought effects on water relations of baobab seedlings. Baobab seedlings used a limited amount of stored water to buffer daily water deficits (~ 8.5 g d 1), which contributed up to only ~ 17.5% of daily water use and ~ 6% of total plant water. Under drought, a strong reduction in stomatal conductance (~ 85%) resulted in a midday leaf water potential of − 1 MPa and zero stem sap flow followed by significant leaf loss. Plant anatomy evidenced the presence of water storage tissues and the vulnerability to xylem embolism. The taproot was the most important plant part for water storage (68% of total plant water), suggesting root-succulence rather than stem-succulence. When drought intensified, limitation of leaf transpiration and/or root water uptake led to drought-enforced dormancy. Despite the large amounts of water stored in the taproot (~ 90%) and the stem (~ 75%), only a limited amount of stored water appeared to be used to sustain upper leaves and plant metabolism during the dormant period, and to facilitate recovery following water supply. Drought avoidance, conservative water use and the presence of internal stored water allow baobab seedlings to survive drought.  相似文献

Detailed analyses of planktonic foraminifera at Site 17964 from the southern South China Sea (SCS) disclose that warm-water species have a higher percentage during the Holocene, while temperate-water species have a higher content for the last glacial period. Therefore, the sea surface temperature (SST) is a main factor that affects the foraminiferal assemblage at this site. A remarkable faunal variation at Site 17964 is recognized for Pulleniatina obliquiloculata over the last glacial–interglacial periods: higher P. obliquiloculata content during the glacial period and abrupt drop at the beginning of Termination I (16.5–15 kyr B.P.). The characteristic P. obliquiloculata variation can be correlated with other sites in the southern SCS and thus can be adopted as a stratigraphic tool in the region. A detailed analysis of Orbulina universa shell morphometrics at Site 17964 shows the test size from 0.83 to 1.45 mm and the shell porosity up to 36.7%, much larger than those in the Indian and Atlantic Oceans, which indicates a warmer and less saline surface water in the equatorial–tropical western Pacific. The diameter and shell porosity of O. universa increased from the last glacial to the Holocene, corresponding to the increase of SST recorded by the Uk37 alkenone index. A higher correlation coefficient (89%) between the O. universa test size and SST implies that intraspecific O. universa test size be used as an index of the sea surface temperature in the South China Sea.  相似文献

TGFBI, a transforming growth factor β-induced extracellular matrix protein, circulates at a level of ~ 300 ng/ml in humans and modulates several integrin-mediated cellular functions. The protein contains an N-terminal EMI domain, four consecutive FAS1 domains, and the RGD motif. Each FAS1 domain and the RGD motif have been known to interact with avb3 integrin. Here, we found that the binding affinity (Kd) of TGFBI for αvβ3 integrin was approximately 3.8 × 10? 8 M, a value ~ 2300-fold higher than that of a single FAS1 domain, and demonstrated that this greater affinity was due to the cooperative action of the four FAS1 domains and the RGD motif. Moreover, TGFBI exhibited more potent anti-angiogenic and anti-tumorigenic activities, even at a 100-fold lower molar dose than the reported effective dose of the FAS1 domain. Finally, our data showed that TGFBI specifically targeted the tumor vasculature and accumulated at the tumor site. Collectively, our results support the theory that TGFBI acts as a potent endogenous anti-tumor and anti-angiogenic molecule by targeting αvβ3 integrin, and highlights the importance of physiological circulating TGFBI levels in inhibiting tumor growth.  相似文献

DNA and chromosome damages in peripheral blood lymphocytes were evaluated in 151 workers occupationally exposed to formaldehyde (FA) and 112 non-FA exposed controls. The effects of polymorphisms in three glutathione-S-transferase (GSTs) genes on the DNA and chromosome damages were assessed as well. Alkaline comet assay and cytokinesis-block micronucleus (CBMN) assay were used to determine DNA and chromosome damages, respectively. The genotypes of GSTP1 (Ile105Val), GSTT1, and GSTM1 were assayed. The mean 8-h time-weighted average (TWA) concentrations of FA in two plywood factories were 0.83 ppm (range: 0.08–6.30 ppm). FA-exposed workers had higher olive tail moment (TM) and CBMN frequency compared with controls (Olive TM, 3.54, 95%CI = 3.19–3.93 vs. 0.93, 95%CI = 0.78–1.10, P < 0.01; CBMN frequency, 5.51 ± 3.37 vs. 2.67 ± 1.32, P < 0.01). Olive TM and the CBMN frequency also had a dose-dependent relation with the personal FA exposure. Significant association between FA exposure history and olive TM and CBMN frequency were also identified. The level of olive TM was slightly higher in FA-exposed workers with GSTM1 null genotype than those with non-null genotype (3.86, 95%CI = 3.31–4.50 vs. 3.27, 95%CI = 2.83–3.78, P = 0.07) with adjustment of covariates. We also found that FA-exposed workers carrying GSTP1 Val allele had a slightly higher CBMN frequency compared with workers carrying only the wild-type allele (6.32 ± 3.78 vs. 5.01 ± 2.98, P = 0.05). Our results suggest that the FA exposure in this occupational population increased DNA and chromosome damages and polymorphisms in GSTs genes may modulate the genotoxic effects of FA exposure.  相似文献

Benthic foraminiferal assemblages are increasingly utilized as indicators of water and sediment quality in coastal-marine environments. Most reef-dwelling foraminifers live on firm substrata such as reef or phytal surfaces, while most assessments have examined assemblages from sediments. This case study compared relative abundances of total foraminiferal-shell assemblages between sediment and phytal/rubble samples collected from one reef within one week. A total of 117 species within 72 genera were identified, with the same taxa in both sample sets in different proportions. Larger benthic foraminifers and some agglutinated taxa were concentrated about 1.5–3 fold in sediment samples, while nearly two-thirds of small, fragile shells were lost. Several common indices were compared, including Taxonomic Richness (number of genera), Shannon (H), Simpson's (D) and Fisher (α) diversity indices, Evenness (E), and the FORAM Index (FI). Highly significant differences (p < 0.001) between shell assemblages from 13 sets of phytal/rubble substrata and sediments were found in mean number (± standard deviation) of genera (49 ± 4 vs. 34 ± 10) and mean FI (5.6 ± 0.8 vs. 3.6 ± 0.4); both reflecting greater relative abundances of smaller foraminifers in the rubble samples. Fisher diversity was marginally significant (p = 0.05); other indices showed no significant differences between sample types. Although assessment of total assemblages is substantially less costly than distinguishing between specimens that were live or dead when collected, many researchers report those distinctions. The results of our study provide insight that can assist interpretations of studies that use live assemblages to calculate the FI, rather than total assemblages for which it was originally developed.  相似文献
