The pedal ganglia of the terrestrial gastropod Ariolimax contain junctions between nerve fibers which are shown to be preferential points of fatigue and which exhibit facilitation (summation) of preganglionic impulses to produce a postganglionic spike. These characteristics in conjunction with others previously reported (reversible susceptibility to nicotine, convergence of preganglionic impulses, and inhibition of transmission through setting up a refractory state in the postganglionic fiber) are considered sufficient to indicate synaptic transmission in the pedal ganglia. The mean conduction velocity of the fastest fibers in the pedal nerves is 0.52 meter per second for preganglionic and 0.50 meter per second for postganglionic fibers at 7.56°C. The conduction rates at 21.76°C. are respectively 0.80 meter per second and 0.83 meter per second. The mean ganglionic delay is 0.033 second at 7.56°C. and 0.019 second at 21.76°C. The mean Q10's for conduction velocity are thus 1.37 for preganglionic and 1.42 for postganglionic fibers. The mean Q10 for ganglionic delay is 1.49. If the assumption is made that the Q10 for ganglionic delay is that of a limiting reaction, this figure then represents a value below which the Q10 for synaptic delay is statistically improbable.  相似文献

The fine structure of the lateral line organ of the Japanese sea eel Lyncozymba nystromi has been studied with the electron microscope. The sensory epithelium of the lateral line organ consists of a cluster of two major types of cells, the sensory hair cells and the supporting cells. The sensory cell is a slender element with a flat upper surface provided with sensory hairs, Two different types of synapses are distinguished on the basal surface of the receptor cell. The first type is an ending without vesicles and the second type is an ending with many vesicles. These are presumed to correspond to the afferent and the efferent innervations of the lateral line organ. The fine structure of the supporting cells and the morphological relationship between the supporting cells and the receptor cells were observed. The possible functions of the supporting cells are as follows: (a) mechanical and metabolic support for the receptor cell; (b) isolation of the individual receptor cell; (c) mucous secretion and probably cupula formation; (d) glial function for the intraepithelial nerve fibers. Both myelinated and unmyelinated fibers were found in the lateral line nerve. The mode of penetration of these fibers into the epithelium was observed.  相似文献

Summary Activity of efferent fibers was recorded from the ramus ophthalmicus superficialis of the head lateral line nerve and the ramus medialis of the trunk lateral line nerve of the axolotl Ambystoma mexicanum. Baseline activity and activity evoked by sensory stimuli were examined. Electrical stimulation of selected branches was used to determine the conduction velocity and the branching pattern of efferent fibers. The influence of lesions at different levels in the CNS on efferent activity was studied.Up to 5 units with baseline activity were found in a single ramus of the lateral line nerve. Discharge rates were variable and highly irregular; they differed between units of the same branch. Bursting activity occurred in 62% of the units. Movements of the animal were accompanied by activity in up to 8 efferent units in a single nerve.Efferent activity could be elicited or modified by stimulation of visual, labyrinthine, somatosensory, and lateral line systems. Stimulation of the electrosensory system had no effect. Individual efferent neurons innervated different fields in the lateral line periphery. Conduction velocities of efferent fibers ranged from 5 to 12 m/s.Efferent units received input from various sources at different brain levels up to the diencephalon. These in puts determined the baseline activity. The mechanosensory input was mediated at the medullary level.Abbreviations r.m. ramus medialis - r.o.s. ramus ophthalmicus superficialis - r.s. ramus superior  相似文献

Fundulus heteroclitus (L.) from a North Carolina Spartina marsh teed largely on small crustaceans (amphipods, tanaids and copepods) and polychaetes. Fish longer than 30 mm standard length also ingested considerable amounts of living plant material. Smaller individuals were distinctly carnivorous. Recognizable particles of Spartina detritus occurred in less than 15% of the guts examined. The relationship of weight to length changed significantly during the year. Although females were larger than males of the same age. males were heavier than females of the same length, except for a brief period at the peak of the spawning season in the early spring. An average second season fish may lay up to 512 eggs from March through August, but first season fish did not reach reproductive size by the end of the spawning season. Growth of first season fish in mid-summer averaged 5% of their total weight per day. These significant seasonal changes in ecological properties of killifish populations are important in any estimates of growth, reproduction, and production.  相似文献

1. In Fundulus heteroclitus the dispersing melanophore nerve fibers have a relatively high threshold for faradic stimulation and a low one for stimulation by cutting. When they are protected from the competing action of the concentrating fibers, they show through the responses of their melanophores well marked antidromic activities which can also be seen to a slight degree even where the concentrating fibers are active. 2. The concentrating melanophore nerve fibers in this fish have a relatively low threshold for faradic stimulation and a high one for stimulation by cutting. They also exhibit clear antidromic responses as shown by their associated melanophores.  相似文献

Prion protein is involved in severe neurodegenerative disorders but its physiological role is still in debate due to an absence of major developmental defects in knockout mice. Previous reports in zebrafish indicate that the two prion genes, PrP1 and PrP2, are both involved in several steps of embryonic development thus providing a unique route to discover prion protein function. Here we investigate the role of PrP2 during development of a mechano-sensory system, the posterior lateral line, using morpholino knockdown and PrP2 targeted inactivation. We confirm the efficiency of the translation blocking morpholino at the protein level. Development of the posterior lateral line is altered in PrP2 morphants, including nerve axonal outgrowth and primordium migration defects. Reduced neuromast deposition was observed in PrP2 morphants as well as in PrP2−/− mutants. Rosette formation defects were observed in PrP2 morphants, strongly suggesting an abnormal primordium organization and reflecting loss of cell cohesion during migration of the primordium. In addition, the adherens junction proteins, E-cadherin and ß-catenin, were mis-localized after reduction of PrP2 expression and thus contribute to the primordium disorganization. Consequently, hair cell differentiation and number were affected and this resulted in reduced functional neuromasts. At later developmental stages, myelination of the posterior lateral line nerve was altered. Altogether, our study reports an essential role of PrP2 in collective migration process of the primordium and in neuromast formation, further implicating a role for prion protein in cell adhesion.  相似文献

The carangid genus Decapterus can be defined by having a single finlet behind both the second dorsal and anal fins, and lacking scutes on the anterior curved part of the lateral line. We revised taxonomically the species of Decapterus with red-colored caudal fins (the red-fin Decapterus group) and established that the group consisted of the following four species: Decapterus akaadsi Abe 1958, distributed in the eastern Indian Ocean and West Pacific from the Andaman Sea to Indonesia, north to central Japan; Decapterus kurroides Bleeker 1855, distributed in the Indo-West Pacific from the Red Sea and eastern coast of Africa to eastern Australia, north to the Philippines; Decapterus smithvanizi sp. nov., occurring in the Andaman Sea, the South China Sea, and Indonesia; and Decapterus tabl Berry 1968, distributed circumglobally in tropical and subtropical seas. The diagnostic characters of these species are as follows: D. akaadsi—curved part of lateral line with 43–53 cycloid scales, straight part of lateral line with 26–29 scutes, head length 26.7–30.1 % SL, and body depth 24.0–27.9 % SL; D. kurroides—curved part of lateral line with 45–51 cycloid scales, straight part of lateral line with 30–32 scutes, head length 30.3–33.0 % SL, and body depth 23.4–26.4 % SL; D. smithvanizi—lower gill rakers 25–31, curved part of lateral line with 54–62 cycloid scales, body depth 19.4–22.5 % SL, pectoral-fin tip usually beyond the level of second dorsal-fin origin; D. tabl—tip of upper jaw usually hooked and opercular membrane partly serrated in larger specimens, lower gill rakers 28–33, curved part of lateral line with 61–72 cycloid scales, body depth 16.6–23.0 % SL, pectoral-fin tip not reaching to the level of second dorsal-fin origin.  相似文献

We examined habitat use, movement, and growth of young-of-the-year (YOY) Fundulus heteroclitus and Fundulus luciae with a tag/recapture experiment in tide-dominated salt marshes to determine if movements from Spartina marsh surface can account for the occurrence of larger, older individuals in other habitats. Evaluation of the tagging techniques in laboratory experiments with YOY F. heteroclitus (15-35 mm TL) found that coded wire tags were retained at least up to 77 days. The high rates of recapture in the field also indicate that the tagging approach generally worked well. Of a total of 5748 YOY F. heteroclitus (14-40 mm TL) and 133 YOY F. luciae (17-40 mm TL) tagged, 56.0% and 74.4% were recaptured, respectively. Most (44%) YOY F. heteroclitus recaptured occurred at or near (0-5 m) the release site, but some were captured up to 299 m away up to 166 days after tagging. By comparison, movement of F. luciae was very limited, with 99% of recaptures occurring at the exact site of release after up to 66 days at liberty. These different movement patterns by YOY Fundulus indicate that species-specific behavior plays an important role in habitat selection. In addition, it appears that dispersal of YOY F. heteroclitus can help to explain the occurrence of larger individuals of this species in Phragmites-dominated marshes even though there is little evidence of use of this habitat by small YOY.  相似文献

This report describes the responses of single afferent fibers in the posterior lateral line nerve of the goldfish, Carassius auratus, to pure tone and to amplitude-modulated sinusoidal wave stimuli generated by a dipole source (stationary vibrating sphere). Responses were characterized in terms of output-input functions relating responses to vibration amplitude, peri-stimulus time histograms relating responses to stimulus duration, and the degree of phase-locking to both the carrier frequency and the modulation frequency of the amplitude-modulated stimulus. All posterior lateral line nerve fibers responded to a pure sine wave with sustained and strongly phase-locked discharges. When stimulated with amplitude-modulated sine waves, fibers responded with strong phase-locking to the carrier frequency and, in addition, discharge rates were modulated according to the amplitude modulation frequency. However, phase-locking to the amplitude modulation frequency was weaker than phase-locking to the carrier frequency. The data indicate that the discharges of primary lateral line afferents encode both the carrier frequency and the modulation frequency of an amplitude-modulated wave stimulus. The peripheral and central portions of the lateral line system of the dwarf catfish were studied by morphological and electrophysiological methods. The posterior lateral line nerve, innervating the electro- and mechanoreceptors of the trunk, was shown to consist of poorly myelinated fibers 2–9 µ in diameter. The conduction velocity in this nerve varied from 10 to 15 m/sec. The lateral line nerves end in the medial nucleus of the acoustico-lateral region, which consists of dorsal and medial parts. The former is composed of circular and triangular cells measuring 6–14 µ, the second part by circular cells measuring 4–6 µ. These parts of the medial nucleus are most sharply differentiated in the region of entry of the auditory nerve. Responses to stimulation of the lateral line electro- and mechanoreceptors were recorded over the whole of the acousticolateral region in the caudal-rostral direction. The neurons studied were located at depths of 400–800 µ in the region of the medial nucleus.I. P. The effect of temperature on the potential and current thresholds of the squid giant axon membrane was measured with gross external electrodes. A central segment of the axon, 0.8 mm long and in sea water, was isolated by flowing low conductance, isoosmotic sucrose solution on each side; both ends were depolarized in isoosmotic KCl. Measured biphasic square wave currents at five cycles per second were applied between one end of the nerve and the membrane of the central segment. The membrane potential was recorded between the central sea water and the other depolarized end. The recorded potentials are developed only across the membrane impedance. Threshold current values ranged from 3.2 µa at 267deg;C to 1 µa at 7.5°C. Threshold potential values ranged from 50 mv at 26°C to 6 mv at 7.5°C. The mean Q10 of threshold current was 2.3 (SD = 0.2), while the Q10 for threshold potentials was 2.0 (SD = 0.1).  相似文献

Two new Cyprinoid species are described from Phu Quoc Island, Gulf of Thailand. The first new species, Barbucca elongata sp. nova (Balitoridae), differs from the species B. diabolica, which is described previously, in more elongated body covered by small scales (50–67 perforated lateral line scales), conical snout, and coloration. The second new species, Rasbora vietnamensis sp. nova (Cyprinidae), belongs to the species group “R. trifasciata”; it differs from other species of the group in substantially reduced lateral line system with four-seven perforated scales and absence of red pigmentation on the fins and body.  相似文献

The adaptive radiations of African cichlids resulted in a diversity of feeding morphologies and strategies, but the role of sensory biology in prey detection and feeding ecology remains largely unexplored. Two endemic Lake Malawi cichlid genera, Tramitichromis and Aulonocara, feed on benthic invertebrates, but differ in lateral line morphology (narrow and widened lateral line canals, respectively) and foraging strategy. The hypothesis that they use their lateral line systems differently was tested by looking at the relative contribution of the lateral line system and vision in prey detection by Tramitichromis sp. and comparing results to those from a complementary study using Aulonocara stuartgranti (Schwalbe et al., 2012). First, behavioral trials were used to assess the ability of Tramitichromis sp. to detect live (mobile) and dead (immobile) benthic prey under light and dark conditions. Second, trials were run before, immediately after, and several weeks after chemical ablation of the lateral line system to determine its role in feeding behavior. Results show that Tramitichromis sp. is a visual predator that neither locates prey in the dark nor depends on lateral line input for prey detection and is thus distinct from A. stuartgranti, which uses its lateral line or a combination of vision and lateral line to detect prey depending on light condition. Investigating how functionally distinctive differences in sensory morphology are correlated with feeding behavior in the laboratory and determining the role of sensory systems in feeding ecology will provide insights into how sensory capabilities may contribute to trophic niche segregation.  相似文献

A new species of eel cods Muraenolepis trunovi sp. nova (Muraenolepididae) from the Lazarev Sea is described. The type specimen is caught at the depth 730–860 m. The new species differs from all known species in very elongated first dorsal and pectoral fins. With respect to the body proportions and the number of rays in the second dorsal fin and the anal fin, it is related to M. marmorata but clearly differs from the latter in a greater number of vertebrae (73 vs. 67–69), in the reduced upper lateral line (to one sensory tube), and in complete absence of the lower lateral line on the body. The lectotypes of Muraenolepis marmorata Günther, 1880 (British Natural History Museum, BNHM) and M. marmoratus microps (Lönnberg, 1905) (Naturhistoriska Riksmuseum, NRM) are redescribed.  相似文献

Single nerve fibers were isolated from the nerve innervating the sartorius or semitendinosus muscle of the toad (Bufo marinus). Single nerve fiber responses were recorded with three arrangements of the "bridge insulator" method. During stimulation at 50 to 150 pulses per second for 20 to 140 minutes the spike duration was progressively increased. After tetanization the spike duration usually continued to increase at a more rapid rate. Within 5 to 60 minutes further prolongation stopped and within 1 to 10 hours the spike duration was normal. The duration of the response of tetanized fibers was from 2.5 to more than 10 times the spike duration of untetanized fibers. Prolongation was observed in nerve fibers isolated from nerves tetanized in vivo.  相似文献

Morphological Aspects of Ciliary Motility   总被引:5,自引:0,他引:5
In Elliptio complanatus lateral cilia, two distinct patterns of filament termination can be discerned. In one case, all nine filaments are present and all are single; in the second, at least one filament is missing but doublets are still present. These probably represent different configurations within one cilium in different stroke positions; to get from one to the other, some peripheral filaments must move with respect to others. The data are consistent with the hypothesis that the filaments themselves do not change length, but rather slide past one another to accommodate increasing curvature. The bent regions of the cilium are in the form of circular arcs. In a few cases, apparent displacement of filaments at the tip (Δl) can be shown to be accounted for if we assume that all differences are generated within these arcs. The displacement per degree of bend is 35 A. Regions of bent arc are initially confined to the base of the cilium but move up the shaft as straight regions appear below them. From the relationship between arc length and radius of curvature, a shaft length that is the unit that initially bends and slides may be defined. Quantal displacements of the length of one 14S dynein may perhaps occur at sites between filaments at opposite sides of such a unit as sliding occurs.  相似文献

Summary The present study describes the distribution of alkaline and acid phosphatases in the lateral line nerve of Saccobranchus fossilis and optic nerve of Mystus seenghala. The distribution of the phosphatases is quite different in these nerves, i.e., in the lateral line nerve the axons are intensely positive for alkaline and acid phosphatases whereas the myelin sheaths are negative for the enzymes. In the optic nerve, however, the axons are negative and the activity of the alkaline and acid phosphatases appear in the form of bands in the myelin sheaths. The significance of these differences is discussed with special reference to the controversy about the neurokeratin network and the physiological activities of nerves. The glial processes intervening between the myelinated axons of the optic nerve are also stained by the reactions for alkaline and acid phosphatases. The metabolic significance of phosphatases at these sites is discussed.  相似文献

Light and electron microscopic observations were made on the lateral line organs of the free neuromasts of the goby Bathygobius fuscus and the canal neuromasts of the cardinal fish Apogon cyanosoma. As in other lateral line systems, each neuromast consists of hair cells, supporting cells and mantle supporting cells, the whole being covered by a cupula. In B. fuscus the free neuromasts are mounted on papillae and have hair cells with stereocilia up to 2.5 μm long and a single kinocilium at least 25 μm long. Each neuromast is covered by a vane-like cupula that can be divided into two regions. The central region over the sensory area contains columns of myelin-like figures. These figures are absent from the outer region covering the mantle. The canal neuromasts of A. cyanosoma are diamond-shaped with up to 1,500 hair cells. The cupula is unusual in having a channel that lies over the sensory region. The hair cells have up to 45 stereocilia, the tallest reaching 2.5 μm, and a kinocilium at least 5 μm long. Tip links are shown for the first time between rows of stereocilia of the hair cells of lateral line neuromasts. The presence of tip links has now been demonstrated for all acousticolateral hair cell systems.  相似文献
